The NHS 10 Year Plan - Empowering Families
The NHS 10 year plan calls for a ‘fundamental shift’ in the way that the NHS works alongside patients and individuals. It highlights the need to create genuine partnerships between professionals and patients and it commits to training staff to be able to have conversations that help people make the decisions that are right for them.
There is also a commitment to increasing support for people to manage their own health. This forms part of a broader cultural change, moving towards what they have described as ‘shared responsibility for health'. Shared responsibility is not the same as personal responsibility, which places the onus on people to ‘look after themselves’ and ‘use services responsibly’. The starting point is that most people already take responsibility for their own health and care. However, the belief is that more could be done to reduce over-dependency on services and to draw on people’s own expertise. There is acknowledgement that this is easier for some people than for others. Previous work undertaken within a children’s bladder and bowel service identified the 4
benefits of empowering families to self manage a range of paediatric continence problems (Rogers 2012). If families have a good understanding of the problem their child is experiencing and have the appropriate information to self manage that problem, they are more likely to support their children throughout the process, resulting in improved outcomes. Information can be obtained from a variety of sources. Clerici et al (2012) reported several benefits to using digital social media and noted that online videos are a more effective way of sharing health information than written text. They also reported that it was easier for patients to describe their experiences and first hand impressions of their disease, using videos they had seen on YouTube.
Li et al (2012) also discussed the advantages of digital media to deliver specifically targeted videos to population groups, who find using this information and resources is easier than with written text.
Other benefits of social media found by Thielst were that using social media based videos rather than text interventions can have increased impact on patient empowerment and patient engagement, for a variety of health behaviours.
The authors also noted that for those with poor literacy skills, video provides a userfriendly approach to sharing and understanding health information.
To that end Bladder and Bowel UK are developing a range of short YouTube videos to help inform families about common childhood bladder and bowel problems. The first 2 videos which discuss the causes and treatment of bedwetting are available to view online at:
Additionally, videos, especially ones using animation, can help reach ethnic population groups. Thielst (2011) reported that social media can help patients find information when they are diagnosed with a condition that requires ongoing treatment and management. The author noted that social media technologies can be used to reduce the utilization of health services and improve both patient responsibility and acceptance.

Revision of Guidance Document - Provision of Continence Containment Products to Children and Young People Guidance for the Provision of Continence Containment Products to Children and Young People

Guidance for the provision of continence products to children and young people 2016 (reviewed and updated 2019)
Bladder & Bowel UK launched a national guidance document about the provision of continence containment products for children and young people in September 2016, which has now been reviewed and updated. Whilst it is recognised over 750,000 children and young people suffer with bladder and bowel problems on a daily basis, access to appropriate care is patchy and inconsistent. Some areas provide a comprehensive children's continence service, while others have little more than a 'free nappy' service. The latter is a potential waste of resources to the NHS, but, can be discriminatory to those children with disabilities who are not supported to attain continence in the same way as their peers. This also has potentially dangerous consequences as there is a risk of underlying serious and treatable co-morbidities being missed.
The guidance document was developed by clinicians with expertise in children's continence, combining consensus of best practice with available evidence and was extensively reviewed. It has been approved by a number of national organisations and aims to facilitate a consistent and equitable approach to the provision of continence containment products.
