Celebrating 10 years of Kidz to Adultz South 2017 Tjos

A phenomenal achievement from what started as small Children’s Seating Clinics in the 1990s! This year Disabled Living (organiser of the Kidz to Adultz events) is extremely proud to be holding a double celebration—10 years of Kidz to Adultz South and 120 years of providing services to people of all ages with disabilities and additional needs. It’s amazing to see how these events have developed over the years, from small children's seating clinics held in the 1990s at our base in Manchester, to five of the largest FREE events totally dedicated to children and young adults with disabilities and additional needs, their families, carers and all the professionals who support them. Kidz to Adultz South was established in 2007 following on from the overwhelming success of our original event, Kidz to Adultz North held in Manchester and the need for these events in other areas of the UK. A large number of visitors had travelled long distances to attend Kidz to Adultz North. Kidz South enabled people from the South of England to have their own dedicated event and was an immediate success. In line with changes to the Care Act 2014 and The Children and Families Act 2014, we expanded the Kidz events and introduced advice and information on services, equipment and products to support young adults up to the age of 25 years, going through the transitional period and beyond. The name of the event was aptly changed to ‘Kidz to Adultz South’. Over the past 10 years we are extremely proud to have welcomed over 20,000 visitors through the doors at the Rivermead Leisure Centre — parents with children and young adults, siblings, grandparents, carers and of course all the professionals who support them. The most rewarding part of these events for the Kidz Team in particular, and I'm sure for all our exhibitors, is hearing and reading feedback from our visitors – how attending these events has given them access to vital information on equipment, products, services and alternative funding streams which has helped to improve the quality of their children’s lives—priceless! Please do come and say hello to the team from Disabled Living in the ‘Celebratory Marquee’ and at the main Kidz registration area to hear more about all our services and the chance to win one of many prizes on offer— see page 7! We do hope you find your visit to Kidz to Adultz South useful and informative and we look forward to seeing you again next year! Carmel Hourigan—Senior Manager, The Kidz Team at Disabled Living.

Attendees to this talk report a reduction in anxiety regarding flying and improved knowledge – so please do join us if you have any concerns regarding flying with your child/young person/adult. Poo Problems. Bowel problems are common in children, but those with additional needs, including developmental disabilities (e.g. autism) and learning difficulties are even more susceptible. It can be difficult to unpick the cause of the problems, to know how to address them, or to find help. Families and professionals may assume that the bowel problems are an inevitable part of the disability, or children may be delayed in toilet training because of them. This seminar will look at common bowel problems, including constipation, soiling, refusing to poo on the toilet and smearing and make suggestions for addressing them. I’m not ok!: making it easier for AAC users to talk about problems. As a teacher of Personal, Social and Health Education (PSHE) to pupils with severe physical disabilities and complex needs where most students use Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) to communicate, I have noted how difficult students find it to communicate about problems (other than pain). They need a quick, easy way of communicating about every type of problem, from an annoying itch to a serious safeguarding issue. The objective of this seminar is to share the practical method I have devised to help students communicate about all problems. The outcome:- delegates will leave with a clear understanding of symbols/language necessary and how to teach/talk to young people re communicating about problems of a more sensitive nature.
