THE GREAT GEORGE HOTEL

STAY IN THE HEART OF Prince Edward Island

Picture this: you awaken to the sound of birds chirping and the sunrise coating the city in pastel hues. You spend a few extra minutes in your comfy bed before stepping out the door in search of a new adventure. With the rising sun warming your face, you walk by colourful homes, historic brick buildings, and luscious gardens along the way. The city is not yet fully awake but you can already feel the soul of this coastal town. As you pause to breathe in the fresh ocean air, a calming wave comes over you. And, just like that, you realize you’re exactly where you’re meant to be.

Maybe you're dreaming about this moment, planning your trip down to the last detail. Or maybe you’ve already arrived here by chance, flying by the seat of your pants (and Instagram recommendations). But what exactly makes staying in our little city so special? Besides the early morning splendor, here are eight more reasons why you’ll want to call Charlottetown your "home away from home.”

UNBEATABLE HOSPITALITY - Being kind and courteous (and maybe a little bit nosy) is in our blood. Our hosts enjoy getting to know you and will no doubt make you feel at ease right away. Be sure to ask them about their favourite “go to” spots for a local's perspective!

SUSTAINABLE OPTIONS - Most of our hotels are committed to doing their part for the environment and offer various ways for guests to follow suit. From offering programs that allow you to forgo housekeeping to being full blown energy-efficient properties, it’s easy to make eco-friendly choices on your trip.

CENTRALLY LOCATED - Charlottetown is the ideal base for exploring the rest of PEI. A short drive in any direction brings you to the Island’s famous white sand beaches, seasonal restaurants, quaint villages, family attractions, and world-class golf. The Confederation Trail passes through downtown and is a wonderful place to walk or begin a longer cycling journey to the countryside.

SOMETHING FOR EVERY TASTE & BUDGET - From penthouses with stunning views to grand Victorian abodes with extra charm to wallet-friendly rooms with style to boot, you’ll find something that suits your style and allows you to unwind in comfort and peace. That deep exhale you’ve been searching for? You’ll find it here.

A WALKER'S PARADISE - Charlottetown’s historic downtown was built pre-car era and its walkability is part of its magic. Many of our accommodations are located in the heart of the city so everything you need is at your fingertips, while others are only a short drive or bike ride away.

IT'S BIKE FRIENDLY - Charlottetown’s relatively flat terrain and proximity to Victoria Park and the waterfront is a dream for exploring on a cruiser. Or you can easily take to the Confederation Trail on your road bike and launch your Island adventures from there. Many accommodations also offer bicycle parking/storage/rentals to guests so be sure to ask!

THE NIGHTLIFE - After busy days spent exploring the city and beyond, Charlottetown’s sparkly nightlife awaits. Soak in those coastal vibes and make some core memories from a floating dock, a rooftop terrace, a waterside nightclub, or a side street patio. The city is your oyster and our hosts are here to help make it the best it can be.

LOCAL FOOD & DRINK - Whether you’re craving a frothy cappuccino, super fresh sushi, or a craft beer that’ll knock your socks off, the Island’s capital is full of hip and tasty places to eat & drink. Many accommodations also offer breakfast and several have full-service dining rooms.

An Honest & Reflective Look at the History of Charlottetown A RENEWED VISION

Knowing the history of a city helps you understand and appreciate the place you’re visiting—for better or for worse. Although modern day Charlottetown on the surface is filled with a colourful mix of restored heritage buildings, beautiful shops & restaurants, and refreshing harbour views, our history hasn’t always been so bright and charming. In fact, reminders of colonization are almost everywhere and there has been a lot of (un)learning and unpacking of our collective history over the last several years.

MAWI'OMI AT ISLAND TIDES YOGA & WELLNESS FESTIVAL

A BRIEF HISTORY

While we can’t ignore that being the Birthplace of Confederation was once one of Charlottetown’s biggest claims to fame, the history of this place is much fuller and a lot longer than that one event. During your visit to Charlottetown, you may want to take time to explore the various perspectives, including the injustices at play and those who were notably absent from deliberations in 1864, including the Mi'kmaq people.

These original inhabitants of Prince Edward Island called the Island Epekwitk (which means “lying in the water”) and have inhabited the land and waterways of the Island for over 12,000 years. Epekwitk’s history includes horror and heartbreak, with the takeover and occupation of Mi'kmaq land. It also consists of the largest Acadian Expulsion taking place across the Charlottetown Harbour at Skmaqn–Port-la-Joye–Fort Amherst, as well as slavery by government leaders, bigotry, and racism.

Charlottetown, as it's known today, can be traced back to the original French military settlement established on the site in 1720. From there, waves of immigration, from the French Acadians, to the British, to people from all over the world have also called this place home and helped to shape its history, landscape, culture, and architecture. This history, despite its darkness, also includes outstanding people and events, with justice advocates ensuring the voices of the Mi'kmaq, Black people, women, and others were (and continue to be) heard. Charlottetown still has a long way to go, but is finally facing and acknowledging its shadows and working towards reconciliation where everyone feels accepted, valued, and respected.

In 2022, three new lively and colourful murals by world-renowned artists were added to downtown Charlottetown building façades. Throughout the year, many festivals will also bring out artistic creations, including Art in the Open (Aug 22 - 25).

PRIDE FESTIVAL - As a hotspot for arts & culture, Charlottetown draws many 2SLGBTQIA+ travellers in search of friendly nightlife, luxurious accommodations, and those coveted “Island vibes.” The PEI Pride Festival (July 12 - 21) is a celebration of the Island's 2SLGBTQIA+ community, so it’s the perfect time to come and let your true self shine! COASTAL CALM - Take time to slow down and breathe in that fresh Island air while you escape the hustle of everyday life. In the heart of the city, you’ll find a variety of yoga studios and wellness spas. You’re never far from the water and a stroll along the Victoria Park Boardwalk, just steps from the city centre. THE FLOATING DOCK ON PEAKE'S QUAY MARINA

Charlottetown boasts the best of both worlds. As a coastal city with a vibe that just won’t quit, you’re rarely more than a short walk, bike ride, or drive from the water’s edge. Quaint streets lined with colourful houses lead you to harbourside boardwalks, while scenic drives through rolling farmland take you to world-renowned beaches. Whether it’s the sound of lapping water, the taste of fresh seafood, or the smell of the salty breeze, there are so many ways to soak up the true Island essence.

EXPLORE - Is there anything more refreshing than getting out on the water on a hot day? Try your hand at flyboarding, Seadooing, or waterskiing with Explore More Watersports. Or get up close and personal to the Charlottetown harbour with kayak and stand-up paddleboard rentals at Paddles.

SAVOUR - A warm sea breeze pairs perfectly with fresh seafood and other culinary delights crafted by some of PEI’s finest chefs. There are plenty of dining options along the Charlottetown waterfront, including (from east to west) Grotto, Lobster on the Wharf, Nimrods’ Floating Restaurants, JC's Tiki Bar, The Chip Shack, Peake’s Quay Restaurant, Dave's Lobster, Brakish, Salt & Sol, and more.

PEDAL - Much of the city’s waterfront is linked by a series of boardwalks that provide the best views of the harbour and stunning cityscapes no matter the season. Sunset strolls or bike rides in Victoria Park are a must, with a special stop at Kiwanis Dairy Bar for ice cream or a visit to the nearby floating dock. Bike rentals are available at MacQueen's Bike Shop, Outer Limit Sports, FunWheel Rentals, Rising Tide Electric Bicycles, and select accommodations around town. Epic Electric Scooters can also be found on many downtown street corners.

SLEEP - The Floating Cottages on the Quay provide a tranquil overnight experience while still feeling like you're immersed in the heart of the city. Located within Peake's Quay Marina on the historic Charlottetown waterfront, you can spend your nights under the glow of the stars and your mornings watching the sun rise over the harbour. The Delta Prince Edward by Marriott is also perched on the waterfront and offers wonderful views, spacious rooms, and plenty of amenities.

TOUR - If cruising the harbour by boat sounds like bliss, you’re in luck. There are a handful of tours departing from Peake’s Wharf and the SeaPort Marina, including a land-and-sea tour of the city aboard the amphibious Harbour Hippo, a seal watching excursion with Peake’s Wharf Boat Tours, a lobster fishing experience with Top Notch Tours, private speedboat wildlife tours with Explore More Watersports, or eco-friendly options with Sol Paddle Tavern or Ride Solar.

DRIVE - Charlottetown is the perfect base to explore PEI’s 800 km of beachfront. From National and Provincial Park beaches with all the amenities to those with barely any road signs, your options are endless. Whether you hit the red cliffs of the south shore or the white sandy dunes of the north, a day at the beach is never far away.

LINGER - At the bottom of Water Street sits the big red 2024 numbers, the Love Locks, and red Adirondack chairs inviting you to soak in your beautiful surroundings and stay awhile. Listen to the knock of sailboats at the nearby Charlottetown Yacht Club as you embrace the art of doing less.

YOUR RAINY DAY BUCKET LIST

While a rainy day may not be everyone’s cup of tea, PEI’s landscapes become extra striking, like a watercolour painting that’s come to life. Charlottetown, in particular, is especially romantic. Suddenly a warm mug in your hands feels sacred in contrast to the blur of muted grey, red, and green outside, while a misty drive to the seaside sparks wonder and unleashes your inner adventurer. So, throw on your rain gear (and the right mindset), and get ready to embrace the moodier weather of our Island.

FOOD & DRINK

Take a tour at Gahan House Brewery, PEI’s original microbrewery, PEI Brewing Co., or COWS Creamery at the Milky Way.

Tuck in with a hot drink at one of our numerous cafés downtown. Many of them even double as galleries and feature local art on their walls, including The Gallery, Salvador Dali Café, and Receiver Coffee Co.

Who says you need to choose just one place to eat? Have your own food crawl. Hop from restaurant to restaurant in the downtown core, enjoying a dish or two at each spot.

ADVENTURE LOVERS

Hit the beach or experience a coastal drive! The rainy weather makes a trip along the coast all the more mystical.

VICINATO RISTORANTE

136 RICHMOND STREET

LONE OAK BREWING CO

15 MILKY WAY, 167 KINLOCK AVE, AVONLEA VILLAGE, BORDEN-CARLETON

The stars aligned for Lone Oak Brewing Co over the past two years as they’ve consecutively opened three new locations in and around Charlottetown. In the spring of 2022, Milky Way welcomed the Lone Oak Brewpub, featuring a cozy patio right on the river. By May 2023, Lone Oak Fox Meadow Restaurant & Events Centre came to life overlooking the Fox Meadow Golf Course in Stratford. Shortly thereafter, the seasonal Lone Oak Beer Garden made its debut in the beachside town of Cavendish—home to a sun-soaked patio. All locations hold strong to their passion for high-quality food, refreshing drinks, and an excellent vibe.

Quality and locality are pillars of Lone Oak's brand and we are thrilled to now have three locations offering up delicious food and locally produced beverages in and around the Charlottetown area. - Jared Murphy, Co-Owner

In June 2023, the Murphy Hospitality Group transformed the former Fishbones Oyster Bar space into a stylish and tasty Italian-forward restaurant in the heart of Victorian Row. Drawing inspiration from the building's original decorative style reminiscent of the Venetian arcades from the Renaissance era, Vicinato Ristorante pays homage to Italy while proudly preserving numerous historic features. Fueled by a love for Island charm and the fresh flavours of Italy, it’s the ultimate destination for friends, family, and neighbours to gather over well-loved dishes and classic Italian wine.

We look forward to treating guests to a true taste of Italy. Our goal is to blend a traditional Italian dining experience with the warm and welcoming hospitality PEI is known for. –Craig MacMillan, Co-Owner

THE CORK & CAST

146 RICHMOND STREET

After five summer seasons of operating a seasonal floating restaurant, The Cork & Cast has taken the leap to open a new, year-round location on Victoria Row. Establishing their business on one of the most renowned streets in Charlottetown has brought their wildest dreams to life. They have transformed the heritage space into a cozy, elegant tropical oasis with historic character, while keeping their values of providing an authentic dining experience to both locals and visitors.

Since opening our first location in 2019, we weathered two major hurricanes and the pandemic, forcing us to adapt quickly in order for our business to survive and, thus, making us stronger. Alongside our staff, we are thrilled about this new adventure, truly believe in our flavours, and are excited to be able to bring our ideas and inspirations to another level all year long. – Rachel Sauvé, Co-Owner

CHARLOTTETOWN'S NEWEST EVENT: Moonlight Bazaar

In September 2023, the creative brains behind Moonlight Bazaar hit up Charlottetown for the first time. This free, annual street festival has been rocking Saint John, New Brunswick since 2017 with live performances, food & drink, and local vendors, all under the glow of a massive 7-metre inflatable moon. The energy was buzzing, drawing in both locals and out-of-towners. It's officially become a yearly party on Victoria Row, so mark your calendar for Sept 28, 2024.

ADA CULINARY STUDIO 135 KENT STREET

THE MIGHTY MARKET

202 KENT STREET

In early 2023, sisters and co-owners Helena and Jessica Wood rebranded the former Cured Creations dining space on Kent Street to The Mighty Market and set out to create a space where individuals could access all-natural, eco-friendly products while supporting local vendors. Today, it is home to Rosewood Refillery, an all-natural refillery and apothecary, as well as Cured Creations and Grams Bakery & Meals To Go, which specializes in freshly baked goods and meals to-go. It’s your one-stop shop for local charcuterie, specialty grocery items, locally-made gifts, and sustainable, refillable household and personal care items.

We have always based our foundation on supporting and collaborating with other local companies. We believe this is the spirit of our Island community and our small but mighty market encompasses that belief. – Helena Wood, Co-Owner

After working closely with the Murphy Hospitality Group for over a decade, Chef Adam Loo has branched out on his own foodie-focused expedition. Opening on Kent Street in the spring of 2024, Ada features a modular Culinary Studio for pop-up dinners and culinary events, as well as a Grab & Go Shop filled with signature sandwiches, salads, soups, and sweets for those on the move. The space itself has been created through the hard work of many Island artisans, including custom millwork by Brodye Chappell that gives the studio a natural yet elegant feel.

Our goal is to create a unique dining experience every single service no matter what the occasion. The dining space is very flexible allowing us to set it up several ways based on the type of event being hosted and the style of food being prepared. – Adam Loo, Owner

STRIKERS DEN

172 GREAT GEORGE STREET

GROTTO 4 PRINCE STREET

Serene and casual atmosphere meets fine-dining experience. Coming in the summer of 2024, the new owners are excited to bring you Grotto, PEI's newest waterfront restaurant. Taking over the floating dock location at the Seaport Marina, Grotto will be your new favourite on-the-water destination to enjoy local seafood, beef, and produce while taking in the beautiful sights and sounds of the harbour. What’s not to love?

The summers on the Island are the best, and we're aiming to provide as authentic an Island summer experience as possible. When the sun is shining, there’s nowhere better to be than on the water. Add in some great local cuisine and cold drinks, and you really can't beat it. We’re excited to bring something new and refreshing to the Charlottetown dining scene. - Jordan Docherty, Co-Owner

Located in the downtown core, Strikers Den is a one-of-a-kind entertainment centre and game store that opened its doors in April 2023. Here, you’ll find unique tabletop games from around the globe, along with a wide range of board games on offer to play or buy. Their finely crafted wooden games are a delight to look at and with dexterity as a prominent theme, they’re easy to pick up and can be enjoyed by all age groups.

I love introducing my customers to games they haven’t played or even heard of before, with names like Sjoelbak, Fidchell, Novuss, and Hnefatafl. It makes my day to see families and friends laughing, coupled with the boisterous sounds of wooden pucks sliding, clicking and clacking! – Ash Mehndiratta, Owner

THE BRICKHOUSE - AL DOUGLAS SALT & SOL SLAYMAKER & NICHOLS GASTRO HOUSE

BUY IT FRESH , BUY IT LOCAL

They say you are what you eat, and the incredible food scene on Prince Edward Island represents the generations of hard-working farmers, fishers, foragers, and artisans who lovingly work with the land and sea. Drawn by the desire to reimagine these beautiful ingredients, chefs from all walks of life flock here to tell their own culinary stories while continuing to honour these rural roots with every masterpiece they create. So, during your visit, be sure to take in the abundance of local, fresh food available at farmers’ markets, restaurants & local shops throughout the city.

SHOP LIKE A LOCAL - You’ll be amazed by the variety of local and specialty food shops, including Kent Street Market, MR Seafood, Riverview Country Market, KJL Meats, Gallant’s & Co., Liquid Gold, Receiver Coffee Co., Farmacy + Fermentary, Mike's Island Market, Anne of Green Gables Chocolates, The Mighty Market, The Root Cellar, and Jewell’s Country Market. At these shops and farmers’ markets, you’ll discover an array of artisan food products, such as fresh bread, handmade chocolates, free-range eggs, mind-blowing cheese, hormone-free meats, PEI preserves, organic kombucha, and more.

TAKE A COOKING CLASS - Once you’ve had a chance to try some of the Island’s compelling flavours, you might even want to find out how to cook with them! Sign up for a class and learn from some of the Island’s finest chefs, like Chef Brittany Boothroyd (of Wild Kitchen) at Founders’ Food Hall Demo Kitchen or one of the Culinary Institute of Canada’s experienced chefs during a Culinary Bootcamp.

DROP BY A FARMSTAND - Take a drive beyond the city limits and you’ll find plenty more options to buy local food at seasonal markets, shops, and farms. Keep your eyes peeled while driving along PEI’s highways and backroads, as you may happen upon farmstands set up roadside. Typically unattended, these inviting stands offer seasonal treats, including famous PEI potatoes, seasonal berries, Island honey, apples, and lots of other goodies. Just be sure you bring some change to leave in the cash box or jar! The honour system is alive and well here on PEI.

CELEBRATE THE HARVEST - The fall season brings with it the PEI Fall Flavours Festival (Sept 26 - Oct 12), a culinary festival with unique events that take place in communities across Prince Edward Island. Farm Day in the City presented by the PEI Potato Growers (Oct 6) is the largest open-air market and street festival in PEI. It’s a treat for the senses with over 180 food & artisan vendors, live entertainment, a petting zoo, kids’ activities, live painting, and more.

CHARLOTTETOWN FARMERS’ MARKET 100 BELVEDERE AVE - This mid-town market is a must-visit, where mingling is as popular a pastime as shopping for farm fresh items. This longstanding market features 60+ vendors, including farmers, food producers, hot food vendors, crafters, and artisans. Open Saturdays (9am - 2pm) throughout the year and Wednesdays from late June to the middle of October.

DOWNTOWN FARMERS' MARKET - Every Sunday throughout the summer (July - Sept, 10am - 3pm), this downtown farmers’ market sets up a beautiful outdoor market with vendor tents. You can find homemade treats, local produce, a hot lunch, artisan wares, and lots of other goodies. You won’t want to miss this quintessential PEI shopping experience.

HARLEY MARGARET’S TOP 5

Late Night Hangs

OLDE DUBLIN PUB - My favourite all-year-round spot to go to in Charlottetown for a night out. From the delicious pub food to the live entertainment, ODP always makes for a memorable night. Be sure to check out the picture-perfect view of the twinkling Sydney Street from their deck!

CHARLOTTETOWN BEER GARDEN - The summer season wouldn't be the same without this grand patio. I find myself here most summer evenings as it has a great vibe. The vast beverage menu & appetizers make for great fuel before hitting the lawn games or cheering on the live performers!

THE ALLEY - You simply cannot go wrong with glow bowling & pub food. Whether you are a seasoned pro on the lanes or have zero experience, bowling at The Alley has been some of my favourite nights (and I am embarrassingly bad).

PEAKE'S MARINA FLOATING DOCKS - Such a unique and fun spot on a summer evening. From seafood to pub food, there is a restaurant for everyone here! My favourites include the garlic fingers from Nimrods', the fresh cut fries from The Chip Shack, and the margs from JC’s Tiki Bar. Be sure to check out Nimrods' for their super fun trivia nights!

TRAILSIDE MUSIC HALL - A classic ‘dinner & a show’ evening is what you'll find at this intimate venue. Trailside allows for these artists to share their stories in a warm and homey environment. Indulge in delicious food served right to your table while you enjoy unmatched musical talent.

Harley is a local photographer and PEI enthusiast living in Charlottetown. She is always on the go whether it’s to the local pubs, fun events, or cruising along the coastal shores. You can keep up with her on Instagram at @peicameraroll. CRAFT BEER CORNER THE GALLERY COFFEE HOUSE & BISTRO

EAT, PLAY, LOVE

While we tend to “make hay while the sun shines”, as they say—we like to play hard, too. Because when you live in such a beautiful place, it’s a crying shame not to. Whether it’s treating ourselves to a rejuvenating sunrise yoga class, cracking a bright red lobster claw on the first day of the season, or scooting to the beach after work for a sunset dip, there are so many things that make living in our seaside city so special.

INDULGE IN FRESH SEAFOOD - Head to Lobster on the Wharf for the lobster, stay for the harbour views. Looking for a refreshing margarita, tasty fish tacos, and incredible tropical vibes? Check out JC’s Tiki Bar on the (literal) Floating Dock. Peake’s Quay Restaurant & Bar offers a sprawling deck that’s perfect for Happy Hour drinks and a piping bowl of mussels. Salt & Sol (above the Charlottetown Yacht Club) is the best place to watch the boats come and go over fresh oysters. Tuck in to Water Prince Corner Shop for an unfussy local experience. And for an upscale surf & turf experience, Claddagh Oyster House on Sydney Street delivers Every. Single. Time.

TAKE IN LIVE MUSIC - Enjoy an acoustic performance at one of our many pubs & restos, or stop to listen to local talent playing on the Victoria Row or Peake’s Wharf stage. For traditional music sessions, check out The Old Triangle. Meanwhile, Trailside Music Hall provides an intimate setting to see both well known and up-and-coming artists. In search of an authentic PEI Ceilidh? Look no further than the Benevolent Irish Society. Or come in September for the PEI International Shellfish Festival (Sept 19 - 22) where live music and world-class shellfish collide to create the biggest kitchen party of the year.

HIT THE LINKS - Is there anything better than heading out for a rejuvenating (if not challenging) round of golf? From links-style to more traditional courses, there are over 400 fairways for golfers of all levels to choose from. There are also lots of affordable rounds and packages, so it’s easy to fit a round into any vacation. Nearby Fox Meadow Golf Course in Stratford or Belvedere Golf Club in Charlottetown are great options close to the city centre. No matter which courses you choose, charming pastoral scenery and gorgeous waterscapes are practically guaranteed. Find out more at golfpei.ca

EMBRACE THE SPIRIT OF TRADITION - Harness racing is almost as entrenched in the Island way of life as our potato fields. Head to “the track” from April to January each year and experience one of the oldest Island traditions at Red Shores Racetrack & Casino at the Charlottetown Driving Park, the Island’s premier destination for live harness racing. Old Home Week is also a time-honoured attraction that takes place annually in mid-August and features amusement rides, livestock & horse shows, the Gold Cup & Saucer Parade and Race, and plenty of live entertainment at the Red Shores Racetrack and Eastlink Centre.

CHOOSE THE SUSTAINABLE WAY - Become an “ecotourist” and savour local flavours and stunning views aboard Ride Solar’s Harbour Cruise. Pedal your way around downtown on their solar-powered Party Bike while enjoying local food & drinks along the way. Try whizzing around on an electric bike from Rising Tide Electric Bicycles on Queen Street. Reserve a spot on Sol Paddle Tavern, Charlottetown’s first solar-powered cycle boat. Take a quick rip on an Epic Electric Scooter, which are located on street corners throughout the city, or slow it down and soak up the beauty of the city on foot.

Fill up YOUR CUP

Whether it’s a spicy yoga session, a heart-pumping fitness class, or an invigorating run, nothing beats an endorphin-boosting experience. Thankfully in downtown Charlottetown there are many welcoming environments to do just that. Visit in June and expand your horizons with the Island Tides Yoga & Wellness Festival (June 20 - 23), a whimsical and holistic experience for all.

MEET THE MAKERS & SHAKERS

Whether it’s the fresh ocean air, the natural beauty, or the relaxed pace of life, Charlottetown is abundant with talented artists that draw inspiration from the Island and the community that surrounds them. Spend some time visiting the city’s shops, galleries, and public spaces that showcase our artists from near and far, including the four featured below, and you’ll get closer to understanding just how magical this little Island and the people that live here really are.

ANNIE MARTIN | @rosewolfcreations - Annie is a Mi’kmaw artisan and owner of RoseWolf Creations. Growing up by the forest and ocean, she uses these elements and Mi’kmaq designs & motifs throughout her work. She is self-taught in the art of woodburning and each piece in her collection, from suede hats to wall art, is made with love and fire. Crafted using locallysourced wood wherever possible, there’s a connection to nature and sustainability in everything she creates.

“I credit my family and community for constantly giving me inspiration for new designs and requesting custom work. My creative pursuits have become part of my heart and the passion that fills up my soul. They have also helped me stay connected to and continuously learning more about my culture.” – Annie Find her work online at rosewolf.ca and shop.indigenouspei.ca Shop her collection at local retailers Oh Hey PEI, JEMS Boutique and Green Eye Designs, as well as various markets throughout the year.

HOLLY ANNE DOYLE | @thequietpotter - Holly is a painter and ceramic artist living with her little family in Prince Edward Island. She finds inspiration in the quietness of her surroundings: hay bales in a golden field, birds singing their morning song, wildflowers, an old farmhouse, or a lighthouse guiding a ship in. There is a sense of nostalgia for life on the east coast that can be felt in each of her designs.

“What I love most about being an artist on the Island is, of course, all of the beauty that surrounds me. It is a constant source of inspiration—in all seasons. Along with that, I've been lucky enough to find a really supportive ceramics community here and am inspired by so many artists from different backgrounds and eras.” – Holly

Follow Holly on social media to check for shop updates. Find her work in-person in town at the PEI Crafts Council Retail Gallery and Croft Shop, as well as Atlantic Maker Markets throughout the year.

JENNA RACHELLE PHOTOGRAPGHY

LET YOUR Imagination Run Wild

EMILY HOWARD | @emilyhowardart - Emily is a visual artist from PEI—or what she calls “a tiny piece of paradise.” She creates calming paintings to soothe the soul and offers a quiet moment in a busy world. All of her paintings are loosely tied to the magnificent colours and textures found all around the Island: our beaches, the shorelines, big skies, and in the flowers and fields.

“I love that I can drive 15 minutes and get to the water. I can walk into my backyard and see the sun setting and have my feet in the grass. At night there is a sky filled with stars that are so clear because we don't have city lights blocking them from my vision. I don't need to look for inspiration, it's all around me every day and night.” – Emily

Find her work at emilyhowardart.com or get in touch to set up an in-person viewing. A selection of her work is also on display at Receiver Coffee Co. on Victoria Row and for sale at Oh Hey PEI (Founders’ Hall and Brackley Beach).

NIYI ADEOGUN | @niyi.adeogun - Niyi is a Nigerian interdisciplinary artist, design engineer, creative entrepreneur, and creative director at ZeroResistance Studios, a multi-media creative studio. In addition to captivating prints and canvas art, he specializes in creating moving art that comes to life through augmented reality. His work has been on display on city streets, inside Founders’ Food Hall and Market, and other public galleries throughout Charlottetown.

“I enjoy the act of drawing inspiration from some of the most random things and find most of my inspiration in music, God, nature, and film. Being an artist on the Island has also been a truly special experience and I cherish the incredible support I've received from the community.” – Niyi

Find his work on display at Founders’ Food Hall & Market and online at shoppostr.ca

STEP INTO THE CENTRE FOR ALL CANADIANS

Found in the heart of historic Charlottetown, Confederation Centre of the Arts is a must-visit destination for lovers of art, theatre, and culture. Built in 1964 as Canada’s National Memorial to the Fathers of Confederation, who gathered at Province House in 1864 to discuss the creation of our country, the Confederation Centre is the result of a dream shared by all Canadians – to create a place where our country’s history and multicultural character is celebrated, and where the talents of its people are nurtured and showcased. Visit the Centre and experience a myriad of cultures, identities, and stories that shape the Canada of yesterday and today through worldclass art exhibitions, original theatrical performances, music, dance, education, heritage programming, and more.

THEATRE

Confederation Centre of the Arts is home to the long-running Charlottetown Festival, a theatrical affair featuring a variety of productions across three venues.

Jersey Boys – They were just four guys from New Jersey – until they sang their very first note. Catch the rags-to-riches story of the 1960s rock and roll group Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons, featuring hit songs like “Sherry”, “Walk Like A Man”, “Can’t Take My Eyes Off You”, “December, 1963 (Oh What A Night)”, and more! (June 25 – Sept 21, Sobey Family Theatre)

Becoming Dolly – Step inside the life of country music legend Dolly Parton. This heartfelt cabaret show pays tribute to one of the greatest singer-songwriters of our time and features iconic songs like “9 to 5”, “Coat of Many Colours”, “Jolene”, and more. (July 4 – Aug 24, The Mack)

Anne of Green Gables–The Musical™ – See Prince Edward Island’s iconic redhead on stage this summer! This Canadian classic is a humorous, touching, and dynamic musical that will inspire your imagination, tickle your funny bone, and mesmerize you with its graceful and exhilarating singing and dancing. This year, the beloved musical coincides with 150th birthday celebrations for author Lucy Maud Montgomery. (June 19 –Aug 31, Sobey Family Theatre)

The story of Anne is an integral part of Prince Edward Island culture, and the Centre is thrilled to continue the musical’s legacy.

- Adam Brazier, Artistic Director of Performing Arts

THE OUTDOOR AMPHITHEATRE

The Centre’s Outdoor Amphitheatre presents interactive shows for the whole family, with admission by donation. This summer, the Mi’kmaq Heritage Actors perform a piece that shares the history of the Mi’kmaq people through stories, songs, and beautiful traditional dance (July 4 – 26). Also at the amphitheatre is Island Steps, a high-energy dance show that explores the fusion of Caribbean dance and traditional Island step (Aug 1 – 30).

SYDNEY STREET

While there are plenty of ways to discover Charlottetown—by bicycle, scooter, or even by horse & carriage ride—there’s something to be said about exploring our walkable city on foot. From historic charm to rainbow coloured homes and tastefully reimagined spaces, wander at your own pace for an adventure that's nothing short of awe-inspiring.

STORYBOOK SIDE STREETS - To get a real sense of the varied neighbourhoods and people that infuse this culturally-rich hub with personality, set aside some time to stroll along the side streets east and west of the main core. You’ll find yourself admiring thoughtfully preserved heritage buildings, impressively landscaped green spaces, and gorgeous Georgian and Victorian-inspired abodes of all sizes and colours.

TIMELESS CHARM - Downtown Charlottetown is a perfect blend of modern taste and old world design. Every nook and cranny will have you pausing to take in the contrasting sights of modern architecture, historic red brick buildings, and radiant seaside homes. The lively atmosphere, courtesy of the friendly citizens living in the core, only adds to the city's distinct character and warm energy.

BY THE WATER'S EDGE - If time permits, wind your way through West Street and on to Victoria Park, where the boardwalk skirts along the Charlottetown harbour, and continue west on Queen Elizabeth Drive. This marks the entry to Olde Brighton, a beloved neighbourhood filled with impressive homes, like Beaconsfield Historic House and Fanningbank Government House, soothing water views, tree-lined streets, and the only lighthouse in Charlottetown.

BEYOND THE DOWNTOWN CORE - If you want to venture a bit further, continue due east from downtown until you reach the Confederation Trail intersecting with Kensington Road or Longworth Avenue. Then head north to explore the city’s Midtown and Uptown via this easy walking path. Along the way, you’ll find gems like bar1911, Red Island Cider, Upstreet Craft Brewing, the Charlottetown Farmers’ Market and, eventually, Royalty Crossing.

THE ART OF Outdoor Living

You’ll discover a special kind of freedom when you embrace the outdoors in a city as naturally wonderful as Charlottetown. Watch the snowflakes fall as you dine in a cozy pod. Take a run in Victoria Park before breakfast. Gaze at the sailboats from the floating dock in Victoria Park. Or throw down a picnic blanket in one of the city’s many historic squares. No matter how you choose to embrace the al fresco lifestyle, the options for doing so are abundant and all contribute to the chill vibe we know and love.

CONFEDERATION LANDING PARK - This 6-acre green space is nestled among the hustle and bustle of Charlottetown’s waterfront. Its sprawling spaces are perfect for soaking up the sun, enjoying an ice cream cone from nearby COWS, doing outdoor yoga in the wintertime, watching the boats come and go from the harbour, and (literally) stopping to smell the roses.

VICTORIA PARK - The city’s crown jewel of green spaces is an idyllic place to relax in the grass or work up a sweat. This 40-acre park is located along the western end of the city, and features a waterfront boardwalk, 7-acres of quiet wooded area & trails, tennis courts, ballpark diamonds, a skateboard park, an accessible playground, swimming pool, and splash pad. The Kiwanis Dairy Bar along the parkway offers a tasty pit stop on those steamy summer days.

THE JOSEPH A. GHIZ MEMORIAL PARK - Named in honour of a former PEI premier, this east-end park is located between Kent and Grafton Streets. It offers a playground, basketball court, swing set, fountain, gazebo, benches, walking trail, and various gardens. The Confederation Trail also runs through the park and is a popular setting off point for cyclists and walkers heading uptown or further west/northeast along the trail.

QUEEN ELIZABETH PARK - This riverside park is located uptown on the west side of the city where North Queen Elizabeth Drive and Spruce Street intersect. Just a short drive or bike ride through Brighton from downtown, the park includes two baseball diamonds, a soccer pitch, gazebo, and a playground with jungle gyms, swings, and more.

THE LEGACY GARDEN - A must-visit for gardeners and those interested in urban agriculture, the Legacy Garden backs onto the Confederation Trail and is located behind the PEI Farm Centre at 420 University Avenue. This impressive 8.5acre expanse of land is home to a 150-plot community garden, 2-acre goodwill garden, accessibility garden, sunflower garden, two architecturally stunning Urban Beehives, and more. It’s a sweet escape in the midst of mid-town Charlottetown, and not far from one of our coolest breweries, Upstreet Craft Brewing.

These four historic squares within the boundaries of historic old Charlottetown were laid out in a plan drawn by surveyor Thomas Wright in 1771.

CONNAUGHT SQUARE - If you’re sight-seeing in the downtown core with kids, Connaught Square is the perfect place to take a break and let them scamper about. This darling green space, located at 60 Richmond Street on the west side of downtown, has large trees, asphalt pathways, and plenty of playground equipment for the little ones to enjoy.

HILLSBOROUGH SQUARE - Hillsborough Square is located on the east side of the city where Hillsborough and Richmond Streets intersect. Over the years, the park has served many purposes including as a pasture for livestock. Today, it is home to a playground, mature trees (perfect for reading a book under), and asphalt paths that criss-cross the square.

OLE KING'S SQUARE - This green space may have fewer amenities to offer its visitors than the other three downtown squares, but it provides a change of scenery for those strolling the city. And if you need to take a rest, check out the Square’s five oversized bronze chairs, which honour Mark Butcher, a local furniture maker from the 1800s.

ROCHFORD SQUARE - Located across from the provincial buildings on Rochford Street, this 4-hectare park is one of four that define the downtown core. Its Victorian-style garden, walking paths, ornate flower beds, and benches make it a welcome respite for those exploring the downtown by foot.

Art & Culture AROUND TOWN

From visual artists to clothing designers to musicians of all genres, the Island’s enchanting nature tends to fuel creativity. The resulting effect in Charlottetown is a beautiful blend of thoughtful sights, inspired sounds, and downright delightful experiences around every corner.

CURATED CREATIONS - The downtown core is home to several shops that showcase pieces made by talented artisans, including jewellery, apparel, pottery, wood art, woven pieces, visual art, and lots more. In fact, a number of artisans have their own studios/shops that are open to the public, so you can view them in action during your visit. You’ll also find specialty boutiques with their own clothing lines, including Swenn inside the Confederation Court Mall and JEMS on Queen St.

ART IN UNEXPECTED PLACES - Take some time to wander the streets in search of the city’s growing public art collection. Keep an eye out for Jieun Kim’s lively creation on the backside of City Cinema (64 King St), I AM EELCO’s colourful mural on the side of the Charlottetown Fire Hall (89 Kent St), and Mister Piro’s vibrant handiwork on the side of 138 Kent Street. There’s also plenty of creative nods to the Island’s most iconic animals— including foxes, tuna, blue herons, and lobster!

MESMERIZING MUSICALS - Theatrical talent abounds on stages across the city. Whether you check out the intimate black box theatre at The Guild, the impressive Main Stage at the Confederation Centre of the Arts (including the return of Anne of Green Gables–The Musical™ this year), the carefully curated lineup of performances at the PEI Brewing Company, or the modern venue at Florence Simmons Performance Hall (featuring Anne & Gilbert, The Musical), the options are limitless for catching heartwarming entertainment.

ART IN THE OPEN - In late summer (Aug 22 - 25), Charlottetown’s public spaces transform into an artistic wonderland during Art in the Open. This free contemporary arts festival features interactive art installations throughout the downtown core. A highlight for many is the March of the Crows, a grassroots parade that pays homage to the city’s large crow population and attracts many costumed participants. As the sun goes down, Victoria Park comes to life with various illuminated pieces throughout the green spaces & wooded trails.

LIVE MUSIC & FESTIVALS - From intimate venues to open-air concerts, live music is part of the fabric of life. Charlottetown is fortunate to have a mix of intimate live music venues, while outdoor spaces such as Peake’s Wharf, Sydney Street, and Victoria Row really take centre stage in the summer months.
