Hues of Chennai

Chennai has in recent times seen a wave of street art taking up its public spaces, we talk to few artists who have been capturing the city’s spirit in all her colours.

Although humans have been painting on walls since the stone age, it was in the 1920s and 30s that the term ‘street art’ began to take form in New York City. It was mostly in the form of name tagging or graffiti, small scribblings, or scratchings on the walls. Later, during the 60s and 70s when New York was going through hard times and was on the verge of bankruptcy, the kids in the city chose to spray paint on the walls and boarded up windows of the factories to build sites that had closed up. Any vacant lot with an empty wall became a canvas for these young people to vent their frustrations. This is where this form of art began to be seen as vandalism and had mass restrictions placed on it. Despite this, the movement gained momentum and in the 80s, graffiti and street art made their way into galleries and art museums with the likes of Keith Haring and Jean-Michel Basquiat. From there, it began to grow even more both in America and across the globe.
While India may have been pretty late to catch on to this, it is now grow- ing quickly and is being embraced by people quite easily too. But this was not always the case. One of India’s most popular street artists, Vijay Raj aka Vijz, shares with us his struggles while pursuing this art form. Originally a hip-hop dancer, Vijay chose this medium to express his ideas and stand out among his peers. “When I started in 2011, there were not a lot of artists and the spray paint cans were quite expensive. I was a college student who got 50 rupees a day as pocket money and the good quality ones were not readily available in Chennai. So I had to buy the local spray paints which would get over in like 10 minutes and were not that good.” Initially, he even offered his services for free if the client bought the spray paint themselves. Through steady practice and learning, Vijay was able to grow his art and also create his own crew.
Despite the notion of vandal ism still coexisting with street art, Vijay hopes that through his workshops with schools and colleges, he would be able to change that and bring a positive outlook to it. “Street art now is all about the message. It is about creating a change, a revolution through art and that is what I try to teach to my students too.” He has high hopes for this current generation of young people as he sees in them a willing acceptance of this art form and an eager passion to learn and master it. All they need is a few nudges and motivation to take their art and message to higher levels.
Another graffiti artist, Vinyas Prabhu also shares the same sentiment. A software developer by day and an artist by night, Vinyas aka Freekstyle, sees a great future for street art in Chennai among the younger generation. “When I started 10 years ago, there were only about 50 street artists. But now the number has grown so big you can’t really count.” When asked why he has not gone full-time yet, Vinyas claims that living on a graffiti artist income alone is not feasible. Nevertheless, he is very passionate about it and still does it when he has time. “For many full-time street artists, it is not about the money but rather their dedication and passion for the art.” The need to speak their mind and share their philosophy pushes these creatives to pursue this despite the shortcomings. He is hopeful of a future where artists’ efforts and hard work are appreciated, both through words and actions by everyone.
Another graffiti artist, Emimal quit her well paid corporate company job to become a full-time street artist. She was previously working in the HR department of an IT firm. Started her journey in March 2022, today she leads a team and has a page on Instagram - @kalaigal_naam . “Previously in government schools and streets there were just wordings/ alphabets and the colours used were dark colours. It seemed like there was no life on those walls. We want to change that and give joyful and positive vibes.” said Emimal.
While artists like Emimal work towards creating a positive change, for some, art is the change. ‘Aravani Art Project’ one of the famous artist groups from Bangalore work towards the betterment of the Transgender community through art. Poornima Sukumar, director of the organisation said, “Art is a form of expression and allows you to be who you’re without any restrictions that are otherwise put down by society. It does not care about your gender and is much more free flowing. Another good thing to note is, it makes the other person feel comfortable to approach the community because everyone now is scared to talk to the community. Art is the best way to do that.”

Indigo : A colour with a rich history

When you think of the colour blue nothing really comes to your mind apart from maybe your favourite dress that’s blue in colour. But are you aware of how that colour came into existence?
Indigo dyed garments are very common today but years ago this colour was considered a rare commodity. There was a time when not many people got their hands on this colour as it was exclusive. Today, there are many chemical ways of producing this colour but we’ve gone in-depth to know about the natural process and its importance.
Mohammed Ayub, a fourth generation indigo farmer-producer in Tindivanam excitedly shares with us the process behind extracting this labour-intensive dye. With one planting session, you would get a yield for at least three to four times a year. The day begins by invoking a short prayer. About twenty labourers harvest the leaves and they are left to ferment in thottis,(large cement tanks) for about 24 hours. The leaves are then removed and the greenish blue liquid is oxidised. This is done by four men who physically enter the tank and constantly kick up the water. “Although many places use machines for this, we still stick to the traditional method”, explains Ayub. This action cre- ates a frothy, brilliant blue liquid. Later, a top slot is opened, to let out the water and the dye particles are allowed to sediment for a day. The remaining sludge of the dye and water is boiled to remove any moisture and it is then dried and pressed into brick-shaped indigo cakes to be sent anywhere. Although the process may seem simple, it takes years to master the nuances of this work.
One of Mr. Ayub’s biggest wishes is that more people would take up planting this crop. “There is absolutely no wastage when it comes to indigo”, the farmer explains. “After fermentation, the leaves are used as fertiliser for agriculture. The water used for the process is rich in nutrients and is used to irrigate the fields. The root of the plant is used in Ayurveda and Siddha medicines. This is one of the most useful crop.” He hopes that the goverment would also help by providing a few incentives so more farmers would join in.
In our modern world, where we see words like sustainable and ecofriendly trending everywhere, indigo dye is one that ticks all the boxes. Since the dye is plant-derived, it causes no damage to our water ways and also does not affect the health of the workers involved in the making process. While many establishments are switching to natural dyes, we do hope for more companies to make the change as they are safer for the environment and the people. Only time will tell if our wishes will come true.

Recently, RMKV silks launched its Naturals collection which draws upon a revered dyeing tradition to create designs that are as luxurious as they are sustainable. Mr.Shankar Kumaraswamy, Director, RmKV, shares his journey with natural hues.
1. How was the idea of RMKV Naturals conceived?
We were wondering how silk saris were dyed and woven in the past before the era of Jacquards and were intrigued by the dyes they would have used. This made us want to revive the lost art of dyeing using natural ingredients! Also, the entire process is very sustainable and we wanted to contribute to our society
2. What were the steps involved in making that dream a reality?
A decade ago, our R&D team and the family members learnt the basics of Natural dyeing under the tutelage of the late Mr. Toofan Rafi who was a master of the art. This gave us a good foundation to experiment with natural ingredients and to develop new shades. We’ve since developed about 50 shades a. Access to the right ingredients as they are not readily available like the synthetic dyes b. Making sure the colour fastness is on par with the syn thetic dyes c. Labour intensive and time consuming processes d. Each shade takes a different amount of time to prepareIndigo dyes take about 30 days just for the dye bath but red shades take about 3 days e. The same ingredient gives us a different shade depending on when it was sourced during the calendar year

4. What has been your favourite in the collection and why?
We’ve launched about 12 saris in this collection with our fa- vourite being the Air India sari — A colloquial term used amongst the weavers to describe a sari which has a rising border design. We like it for its elegance and simplicity but more so for the intricate silk threads woven along the broken zari stripes. Also a hit with our customers! affordable prices
5. Do you have any other plans for sustainable production next year?
Definitely! Natural dyed silk saris will be a staple in our collection from now.
