We had an insightful chat recently where she shared her colourful experiences in Chennai. A Russian by birth, Jane has been living in Chennai for more than half a decade. Starting as a much-loved RJ on Chennai Live with her very own weekend show- Expat Live, Jane has worked with some of the biggest names in Kollywood and has worked in various Hindi and pan- Indian projects on TV and OTT. She revealed that the superstar was very humble and friendly and she was surprised by his innate humility and hospitality.

As for the city itself, she finds that the metro is a multicultural, multi-cuisine hotspot with activities and entertainment available for everyone. She advises expats to not be overwhelmed by Chennai as this mega city slowly captures

Over the recent years, the food scene in Chennai has opened up a plethora of opportunities, innovation and exploration to those seeking something out of the ordinary. People are no more reluctant to try out the different cuisines and have learnt to appreciate the unorthodox. From kaiyendhi bhavans to elegant star hotels, there has been a constant evolution to keep up with the trends and competition. However the city, known to be rooted in tradition, has sometimes moved too far along in trying to appease the palates of the Gen Z & the Millennial. That’s why food festivals that turns back the spotlight on the rural recipes & old methods of cooking is significant to retain cultural relevance & revival amongst the younger generation.

Chef Damu’s Thalaivan Virunthu at GRT Grand is one such festival that does exactly this. The entire theme hovers around health and recipes that are handed down from generations. The display of soups, appetizers & mains are noteworthy for their focus of nutrition and digestion. The Vela Poosanikai Soup (white pumpkin soup) is something that is extremely rare to find in the menus of most restaurants. It is light, fresh and the delicate mix of masalas provides warmth to the soul. Also, millets have been given a pride of place in this amazing festival. The intent is to encourage people to sample dishes made out of these cereal crops. Like the original Ven Pongal has been given a twist by incorporating Kuthiraivali (barnyard millet) with rice and delicious dollops of desi clarified butter. The texture of the millets is surprisingly stronger and richer than the original. Duly deserves a high score.

Who would have thought that the humble Eggplant would exude such amazing flavours with its partnership with Chilli Bean Sauce? The fresh and supple eggplant is well marinated and imbibes the tang and savour of the sauce that makes it a relish that can be eaten sans accompaniments.

Kozhukattais have a separate fan base but this with the gunpowder spritzed as embellishment is a cracker of a dish! The heat from the gunpowder is just right to balance out the flat taste of ragi. An appetizer that is nutritious and ideal to quell the evening pangs of hunger.

For mains, the Satti Soru is a standout for sticking to its traditional methods of preparation. It is basically white rice mixed with the thick masala residue of meat gravy that sticks to the clay pot. In this case, the flavours of Mutton Chukka fill the nostrils when the rice mix is served hot on a plate. The added earthy flavour from the clay pot only elevates the taste & texture.

Other gravies like the Allam Kodi Chicken which is a ginger infused chicken curry, Mangalore Fish Curry & Ragi Mudde with Kathrikai Karuvadu (dry fish) Kozhambu are memorable not only for their native flavour but also because they are reminiscent of the legacies passed down from generations. The highlight is reserved for the Murungakai Malli Mutton Kurma!

The green gravy instantly catches the eye for its unusual mix of just drumsticks and mutton. The meat is soft, warm and cooked so well that it’s infused with the drumstick flavours. It almost seems like the mutton plays second fiddle to the aroma of the drumsticks!! The intensity of the gravy is unmatched like nothing else.

Though they have a long list of desserts like the Ada Prathaman, Pastries and Puddings, the Ragi Koozh served with Shallots, Fryums & Dried Red Chillies is, in Chef Damu’s parlance, TOP NOTCH!! This finger millet porridge is made from a mix of ragi flour, broken rice, buttermilk, green chillies, ginger and then left to ferment overnight. It’s gluten free, rich in fibre and minerals with an instant ability to cool down & energise the fatigued system. Basically a power packed generator in a pot!!

Much like its objective , this virunthu serves to prove why our ancient recipes made from traditional ingredients is as good or even better than the contemporary options available today in terms of flavour, taste and texture. Your attention please, Gen Z!
