It takes some effort to reach the volcanic island of Ulleungdo, but persistence will pay handsome dividends. On the side of a steep peak, Seongnam-based architect firm The System Lab has curled white concrete walls that swoop and swirl like the potent chi energy fields locals believe flow through the island. The resort’s high-ceilinged rooms are sparely furnished with blue-grey stone floors and a severe white palette, while exterior diversions are almost entirely nature-based, taking full advantage of the island’s bounty of sea caves, waterfalls and ancient forests. ALMANAC, BARCELONA

The Almanac hotel group’s debut, just steps from Barcelona’s Passeig de Gràcia, has been designed by local studio Office of Architecture, which has joined two 18thand 20th-century buildings into a 91-room cocoon. Jaime Beriestain Studio has then layered the rooms with spacious white marble bathrooms, copper accents, and oak and walnut panels. Downstairs, in Línia’s dining room dominated by deep blue hues and brass lamps, chef Sergio Ruiz’s all-day menu is based on Catalan standards of grilled seafood, alongside gluten-free options. There is also an expansive rooftop bar with views of the Sagrada Familia and Mount Tibidabo. Almanac hotels will follow shortly in Vienna and Prague. Scene setter ORIGIN GRILL & BAR, SINGAPORE

The latest outfit to join the impeccable stable of eateries at Singapore’s Shangri-La Hotel is Origin, which occupies the ground floor spot vacated by the iconic Nadaman. Designed by A Work of Substance, the space unfolds as a series of set-pieces. Just off the coppery-arched foyer is the bar, a moody blue cavern offering a cocktail menu spiked with jackfruit marmalade, torch ginger flowers, bamboo leaves and osthmanthus fortified wine. In the main room, furnished like an old-fashioned train station platform with hand-stitched Tripolina leather chairs and globe lamps, chef Heidi Flanagan grills snow-aged Niigata wagyu, Fremantle octopus and Lombok lobsters on the charcoal and wood oven. Hollywood treasure LA PEER HOTEL, LOS ANGELES

The Kimpton hotel group’s latest property has opened in West Hollywood’s Design District, cleaving close to the brand’s MO for opening in buzzy quarters. Icelandicborn designer Gulla Jónsdóttir has meshed a European sensibility with a strong sense of place. As such, a white topography artwork of the LA landscape dominates the entrance, while a poolside installation by local graffiti artist Retna sits alongside Gaudi tiles from Barcelona. Guest rooms feature muted grey and beige tones, white oak herringbone floors and giant soaking tubs, where bubbles and champagne can be waiting after dinner at the hotel’s modern trattoria Viale dei Romani. THE CATUÇABA HIDEAWAY, SÃO PAULO

Located on a 12,000-acre farming estate and set high on a bluff swathed in brush, The Catuçaba revels in its isolation. Using responsibly sourced Amazon hardwoods, Studio MK27 has fashioned an elongated floating platform of expansive timber decks, bedrooms and cosy spaces furnished with locally-accented rugs, blue window shutters, textiles and clay bricks. Eucalyptus twig screens cast mesmerising shadows and provide cross-breezes during summer, while chillier nights can be whiled away in a copper bathtub or by ceramic wood-burning stoves. Days can be spent on horseback trails with strapping gauchos, doing laps in rock pools, or eating platters of grass-fed steaks in local village restaurants. Peace offering TSINGPU RETREAT, YANGZHOU

For the 20-room Tsingpu, Neri & Hu has created a contemporary Chinese vernacular that looks and feels thoroughly of its time. The Shanghai-based practice overlaid the original footprint of a neglected warehouse near Yangzhou’s Slender West Lake with a grid of low-slung grey-bricked pavilions, courtyards and pools that call to mind traditional hutong houses. Rooms are lined with terrazzo, white oak, walnut and steel, and feature bespoke furniture and lighting. This sense of peace is accented by the public spaces, which include an art gallery and tea house, framed by broad timber overhangs that catch the light and slivers of sky. Sea change THE PRINCE, MELBOURNE

The 38-room Prince hotel is housed in a four-storey structure on Acland Street in the chilled seaside suburb of St Kilda. Originally constructed in 1936, the building is a local landmark, though local studio Meme Design refused to be cowed by the pedigree. With warmth and imagination, it has matched the art deco façade with an interior that mixes Nordic elements with a light maritime vibe by way of the Hamptons and Miami. The ground floor bistro and bar is headed up by chef Daniel Hawkins, whose mod-Australian menu featuring produce sourced from local community gardens is the perfect accompaniment to the unfolding views of Port Phillip Bay. IBU, COPENHAGEN

One of Copenhagen’s most notable new openings, IBU occupies a modest space on Vesterbrogade, in the cool neighbourhood of Vesterbro. Head chef Henrik Jyrk collaborated with homeware brand Ferm Living to create a restaurant that visually referenced both his Scandinavian roots and his love of Eastern flavours. The resulting design features homely touches and warm, earthy tones that foster a welcoming environment that encourages you to linger. Many of the furnishings are by Ferm Living, including the black ‘Herman’ chairs and dusky pink ‘Dome’ lamps. Jyrk’s food takes its cues from the kitchens of Malaysia and Singapore with a fusion menu that features dishes such as salmon with fennel and ikura, aubergine rendang and cucumber, and crispy chicken sandwich. An immense freestanding bathtub provides the perfect place to unwind after a day of sightseeing and people-watching – and as an added bonus, on request, a member of the hospitality team can draw you a bath at a specified time, including a personalised bathing ritual by Ole Henriksen Spa. Classical Gas Two artists of the classical music world are scheduled to arrive in Abu Dhabi this month for a pair of concerts across the Emirate. Georgian rising star Khatia Buniatishvili, who recently collaborated with Coldplay and who played in Abu Dhabi last year, will team up with Latvian violinist and conductor Gidon Kremer to perform at the Emirates Palace on 2 February and the Qasr Al Muwaiji, Al Ain on 3 February. California dream in a home on wheels

NOTHING sells the American road trip dream better than Hollywood movies. It wasn’t exactly Fast and Furious, Thelma and Louise or Little Miss Sunshine, but we rented a Cruise

freedom to go anywhere. With sun shining, and a blue sky, we headed north on Highway 1, the spectacular California coastal road. In Malibu we did a tour of star homes, glimpsing places rumoured to be owned by A-listers including: C h e r , J e n n ife r A n ist o n , J a ck Nicholson and Lady Gaga.

Sunshine, but we rented a Cruise America motorhome for a group trip to California to take in the sights and stars of La La land. Pickin g u p o u r r e cr e a t io n a l vehicle, RV, in Los Angeles we realised it really did have everything – beds, kitchen, toilet, shower and freedom to go anywhere.

Little Liars, and classic props from films such as Batman, Aquaman and The Greatest Showman. But the highlight was passing Stage 24, home of Ross, Rachel and co for ten years, and an opportunity to sit on the famous Central Perk sofa from the Friends set. The following day we got to be part of the movies ourselves at Universal Studios Hollywood. The theme park is still a working studio, so as well as screaming on white-knuckle attractions based on Jurassic Park and Harry Potter, we also got a sneak peek at some future blockbusters in the making. Another way to see the stars in LA is to sleep under them. I was amazed at the number of RV parks and campsites around the city.

However, for a taste of the A list we decided to ditch the RV for a few nights and check in to the luxury Kimpton Le Peer in West Hollywood. This hip hotel is in the coolest part of town, with celebrity bars and restaurants, such as Pump, from the Real Housewives of Beverly Hills. From here we took a Hollywood H ills gu id e d h ike t h r ou gh t h e mountains that overlook the city, getting perfect photo opportunities of the Hollywood Sign. Keeping with our celestial theme, the hike finished at the Griffith Park Observatory, a planetarium with free telescope viewing of the night sky. Later, rather than negotiate the busy boulevards ourselves, we let Starline Tours do the driving on a Deluxe Grand City Tour. The fun r ide took us to the Walk of Fame, and H ollywood o Chinese Theater plus the beaches Ch p

of Santa Monica and Venice. Before long it was time to hit the road and head south along the Pacific. At Marina Del Ray we got dressed up ready for music and dancing on a Starlight Dinner Cruise. Further down the coast, with a choice of beautiful camping spots a n d lu sh sa n d y b e a ch e s, we experienced a bit of the California dream in affluent Dana Point. It was almost time to get back to the real world, but the final stop on our pilgrimage to the stars took us to a galaxy far, far away… and the brand new Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge at Disneyland California. It is set on the planet Batuu, guests can spot characters like Chewbacca and Rey going about their business in the Black Spire Outpost and get a chance to try the Millennium Falcon: Smuggler’s Run theme ride.
