Melissa Cox, resident and local freelance photographer of our wonderful city of Gloucester, has been taking pictures since high school and recently found her love of nautical, architectural and landscape photography. She loves traveling and being out on the water capturing alluring images of ships, whales and sunsets. When she’s not at work or being one of our city councilors, you can usually find her taking photos of scenic Cape Ann. Driving along the boulder-strewn coast

of Gloucester, Massachusetts, gives the impression of endless shoreline. Beach rose, summer sweet, and milkweed bloom in tight clusters above towering cliffs, their tops desert hues of clay and sand, their bottoms turned inky by millennia of ocean swells. Scenic beaches, where foamy waves slurp against the shore and seagulls trawl the water’s edge for reckless crabs, appear regularly along coast-hugging Route 127. The air is heavy with salt, slightly tacky on the fingertips and damp against the throat. Massive hotels and the homes of the not necessarily famous but certainly capable of dropping a cool few million jut out over the ocean like patrician jaws, glossy and studiously lived-in. Based on outer appearances, you might be tempted to lump Gloucester in with other picturesque coastal areas of the Northeast. But this would be a mistake. Beneath Gloucester’s stony beauty, its whooshing waves, its tourist-appropriate veneer—the upscale waterfront restaurants, the harbor cruises, the chic downtown boutiques— lies the pulsing heart of a city that doesn’t just follow the rhythm of a different drummer; it leads the entire band.

GETTING HERE

PATTERNS with a Purpose DOWNTOWN GLOUCESTER has a new and developing piece of public art on the side of the Americold building at 69 Rogers Street. MosaicGloucester is a visual representation of Gloucester’s oral history, telling its layered tales—through its citizens—in a lasting, accessible, and engaging way. The mosaic was designed to capture the spirit and imagery of Gloucester while becoming a welcoming gateway to Gloucester’s Downtown.

Local artist, Lesley Davison, showcases Gloucester’s storied past, present and future with creative patterns and design.

The work is a love letter from Gloucester artist Lesley Davison to the city. She has interviewed local residents about Gloucester, and has illustrated their stories about Gloucester’s past, present and future on the mosaic’s large fish-shaped panels. The resulting composition is formed of glittery mirror, colorful glass and textured ceramic tiles. Lesley worked with local residents of all ages to make tiles included in the work depicting

marine life and local landmarks, with some tiles even serving as tributes to relationships or to those who are no longer with us. The title and theme of each panel comes from one of the historic Babson Boulders from enigmatic Dogtown, and the relevant boulder is included in the design. A piece of poetry by a poet who lived or spent time in Gloucester is also featured in each panel. As of this writing there are three fish on the Americold building with more to come. Beyond just creating a beautiful mural for Gloucester, its aim is to celebrate our heritage and look forward to our promising future. The mural creation process, as well as the mural itself, engages and informs residents and visitors to build a better understanding and pride in the “mosaic of tales” which come together to form the Gloucester story.

ORN AND RAISED in the fishing community of Broad Channel, New York, T.J. was introduced to the commercial fishing trade by his father, Tim Sr. T.J. was 12 years old when he caught his first bluefin, and he’s been hooked ever since, taking over the Hot Tuna from his father when he was just 19 years old. T.J. currently splits his time between Key West, where he fishes for grouper, snapper, mahi, and wahoo, and Gloucester, where he spends bluefin season.

What sets Gloucester apart from other fishing communities? The history. It’s America’s oldest seaport. Gloucester isn’t like other places - when you pull in, you can feel the history all around you. It’s a special place, nothing compares to Gloucester.

When was your first trip to Gloucester? My family first started going to Gloucester in 1988, and every year since then I’ve spent summers here. How has Wicked Tuna changed the town of Gloucester? It rejuvenated the tourism industry. Not that Gloucester wasn’t a popular destination before, but now people are searching it out like they did right after The Perfect Storm came out. On any given day, 40-50 people will come down to my boat, and they’re staying in the local hotels, eating at the local restaurants. Every local business owner will tell you that Wicked Tuna has had a positive effect. Gloucester was always the bluefin capital of the world and now people are coming to experience that for themselves. Just this past year, a family from Ireland came to my boat and their whole vacation was to come to Gloucester to see the Wicked Tuna boats.

You’ve chosen to dock in Rocky Neck, what do you enjoy about that part of town? I love Rocky Neck because it’s America’s oldest art colony and has a very different vibe. It’s out of the way, it’s close to lots of art galleries, it has all this cool history. I live in Key West part of the year, and Rocky Neck is the Key West part of Gloucester. It’s by far one of my favorite places. Do you have any favorite local spots to recommend? I feel bad naming just one because there are so many places I love. For breakfast, it’s Sailor Stan’s. For lunch, it’s The Causeway. And for dinner, hands down, Tonno – I’m there almost every night. Wicked Tuna airs Sundays on National Geographic.

Other than bluefin, Gloucester has a variety of species you can fish for but one thing that really blows people away is the whale life. In Gloucester, you can see humpbacks and minkes, they’re all right here. As fishermen, it’s something we see on a daily basis but for many people, seeing these whales is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. In Gloucester, you can catch bluefin, you can catch stripers, you can see whales—it’s part of what makes it such a special place.

MY FAMILY VISITED GLOUCESTER as a child but I had not visited in years when I read about a few places that made Yankee Magazine’s Best of New England lists. My list of must see spots grew when I started reading more on DiscoverGloucester.com. It’s worth noting that Gloucester locals love their hometown. We were greeted by friendly, enthusiastic people who were eager to share their stories, their history, and what makes Gloucester special to them. I’ve always been proud to be from Boston, but Gloucester raises the bar just a little higher.

1. Stage Fort Park is the location where Agawam Indians arrived from the west over 10,000 years ago in search of fish. In the mid-1600s, the first permanent settlement of the Massachusetts Bay Colony was Stage Fort Park. Today, it’s a 25-acre park, part of the Essex National Heritage Recreation Area that includes two beaches, a dog park, tons of walking trails, and plenty of amenities for the whole family.

2. Cape Pond Ice, the “coolest guys around”, will have you looking at ice with new found respect! Founded in 1848, Cape Pond Ice sells over 2,000 tons of ice to fishermen, businesses, and individuals each year. Take a tour of the facility to learn the history of the company and how ice was “harvested” and “preserved.”

3. Beauport, the Sleeper-McCann House was built by interior designer Henry Davis Sleeper in the early 1900s. He lived in the 42 room “summer cottage” until his death in the 1930s, when the McCann family purchased it and lived there until 1942. The home was then bequeathed to Historic New England, which now oversees the property and the 10,000+ objects in the collection. Today, the home and gardens are open to the public through tours offered from May-October.

4. Hammond Castle Museum is the

There are also special sunset music sails in the summer and Kids-Sail-Free Saturday mornings. Schooner Ardelle, is a restored Burnhambuilt schooner that can fit up to 50 passengers. It also operates out of Maritime Gloucester and is available May through October for public sails.

former home of Dr. John Hammond, a famous scientist credited with over 400 patents. He built the home in the late 1920s. An admirer of the medieval and gothic design, he imported many architectural elements from Europe. Hammond wanted the home reserved as a museum, and opened it to the public while he was still living in it in the late 1930s. Today, the castle is open for tours from May through September.

5. The Cape Ann Museum celebrates the extensive art community of the area throughout the past three centuries. Almost all of the collection has been gifted to the museum, mostly by family members of the artists. 6. Seven Seas Whale Watch tours are the #1 rated activity in town—and for good reason! Three to four hour tours (offered April through October) explore the Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary region and promise the site of whales. We never would have guessed just how many whales (over a dozen humpback whales) and dolphins we would see and just how close we would get! Staff will narrate throughout parts of the tour and share the history and geography of the area as well as explain the backgrounds of various species. 7. Boat cruises if you prefer a more intimate, or shorter, boat cruise around Gloucester, there are three schooners that we highly recommend: Schooner Adventure is a National Historic Landmark, built in nearby Essex in 1926. Adventure is docked at Maritime Gloucester where visitors can take a community sail. Schooner

8. Maritime Gloucester is an indoor museum with an outdoor aquarium that will engage children of all ages. It’s the perfect spot for the toddler set, but older children will still enjoy the exhibits, many of which have interactive touch screens. The outdoor aquarium features local species of sea life, like the rare blue lobster. 9. Sargent House was the home of sea merchants and their families for over a century. The Georgian style home was originally built in the late 1700s for Judith Sargent Murray, an advocate for women’s rights. A large addition was built in the early 1800s and today, both floors are open to the public and include parlors, bedrooms, and exhibition spaces of decorative arts and furniture. 10. Harborwalk for the best views from every angle in town. The 1.2 mile path traverses through downtown between The Gloucester House and Stage Fort Park. Make sure to stop at the Fisherman’s Memorial (famous for the statue and sobering list of fishermen who died at sea) and the Fishermen’s Wives’ Memorial. The walk is defined by 42 granite pillars which tell the stories of important people and events of Gloucester’s history.

Lighthouses of Cape Ann SIX ICONIC LIGHTHOUSES stand tall along the Cape Ann coastline to protect seafarers from rocky shores and shoals. They offer historians and romantics alike a glimpse into Cape Ann’s maritime lore and legacy. Lighthouses are a comfort to mariners to this day, and despite the use of GPS and electronic aids for navigation, they still symbolize home and safety.

Annisquam Harbor Lighthouse Annisquam Harbor Lighthouse (Annisquam Light) was erected in 1801 to mark the entrance to the Annisquam River at Wigwam Point, a popular Native American summer encampment. The quaint lighthouse is maintained by the U.S. Coast Guard and is no longer accessible from the nearby village of Annisquam in Gloucester. Best viewing opportunities are by water or from Wingaersheek Beach.

Straitsmouth Island Lighthouse Straitsmouth Island Lighthouse (Straitsmouth Light) was built in 1835 to mark the entrance to nearby Rockport Harbor. The lighthouse is maintained by the U.S. Coast Guard, but is owned by the Town of Rockport including the 1.8 acres it sits on. The rest of the 31-acre island is owned by the Massachusetts Audubon Society as a bird sanctuary.

Thacher Island Twin Lighthouses (Twin Lights) The South tower has a red light flashing 5 times at 20 second intervals. The North tower has an amber steady light which is maintained by the Thacher Island Association as a “Courtesy” light in memory to mariners who have passed. Also known as Cape Ann Light Station,

the Twin Lights are the only fully operational multiple lights on the coasts of the United States.

Eastern Point Lighthouse Eastern Point Lighthouse was erected on Gloucester’s Eastern Point to mark the harbor entrance in 1832. In addition to the light, there is a large lighthouse station, which continues to serve as housing for the U.S. Coast Guard. One of the station’s more famous occupants was Winslow Homer. The noted artist spent a year living at the light in 1880. Although not open to visitors the lighthouse presents a wonderful view, especially from the vantage point of the adjacent Dog Bar Breakwater.

Ten Pound Island Lighthouse This quaint lighthouse is located on Ten Pound Island in Gloucester Harbor. The light was constructed in 1821 to mark the island and act as a marker for navigating Gloucester’s inner harbor. The island is easily visible from many locations along Gloucester’s waterfront. Tiny Ten Pound Island boasts housing America’s first Coast Guard station. The light was restored and relighted through the efforts of the Lighthouse Preservation Society.

John Hammond: The Big Idea Guy When John Hays Hammond, Jr. died in 1965, he was America’s 6th most prolific inventor. His death ended a 55-year career of doing what inventors do—applying new technologies, meet market demands, react to global and regional events, and solve the problems we face every day. In this sense, Hammond was very much an inventor’s inventor, the big idea guy. In 1909, Hammond submitted his first successful patent application, a Wireless Control Apparatus. This began a lifelong journey resulting in 437 US patents and 40 foreign patents. During the 1910s, Hammond directed most of his energies towards radio- controlled torpedoes and weapon technologies for World War I. He also applied radio control to aircraft and boats. The drones of today can be traced back to Hammond’s research during this decade. Besides radio control, Hammond also sought control by light, leading to the world’s first robotic dog, Seleno, who would follow its master about as it was guided by a light bulb. The post-war peace of the 1920s led Hammond to develop patents for toys, automobiles, cameras, radio, and early television. The decade also saw more than 40 patents for the piano and the pipe organ. With the Great Depression of the 1930s crashing the global economy, Hammond confronted his own financial needs by addressing the public’s insatiable appetite for recorded music, talking pictures, and radio through dozens of sound reproduction and amplification patents. As World War II approached, Hammond reacted by

developing variable pitch propellers to conserve the fuel of naval vessels and to increase their maneuverability. Hammond’s work with radio control and the variable pitch propeller resulted in the 1963 IEEE Medal of Honor, the highest award given to electrical engineers. After World War II, Hammond turned his attention to consumer goods. The patents of this era became magnetic bottlecap openers and stoves which made their own disposable pans. In a letter to his father in 1924, John Hays Hammond, Jr. explained that he knew his patents would be improved upon and his name as an inventor would fade from memory. In this letter he states that his true legacy would be a “modest museum” filled with artifacts and architectural pieces brought from Europe. Built between 1926 and 1929, and opened as a museum in 1930, Hammond’s Abbadia Mare, or the Abbey by the Sea, would be the residence for him and his wife, Irene, a talented painter of local fame. The museum is well known for combining many elements of Gothic and Renaissance architecture, from its flying buttresses, to its glass ceilinged courtyard. The Castle became a destination for the rich and famous. It also became a destination for organists who wished to perform on the massive pipe organ, one of the world’s largest when it was installed in 1941. First coming to Gloucester as a boy, Hammond was very much steeped in the city’s legacy of innovation and creativity. Today, his legacy continues at his “modest museum” on the shores of Gloucester.

MAGMA is a center for movement practices where people of all ages can discover, develop, and create in a broad curriculum of movement styles. MAGMA (Movement Arts Gloucester MA) Director Sarah Slifer Swift has been on faculty at Boston Ballet School, Salem State University, George Washington University, Amsterdam College of Art/School for New Dance Development, Scotland’s National Center for Dance (Dance Base), and Liza Indiciani Studio of Dance. Through the Gloucester Education Foundation, she created and taught two dance curricula for Gloucester Public Schools. Since 2014 she had directed the Trident Live Art Series @ Trident Gallery. She was Director of the Gloucester New Arts Festival (2005-2009) that specialized in site-specific art and performance. Slifer Swift performed as a dancer with several dance companies and choreographers in the US and in Europe, seeking out radical, experimental work that challenged ideas about performance and aesthetics. Her choreography has been performed

Passionate about telling stories of creative survival, Caroline Harvey has been touring internationally as spoken word poet, educator, and activist for over 15 years. Currently, Caroline teaches for Berklee Online and is co-owner of Dogtown Books, an independent bookstore in Gloucester, MA. Find Caroline’s poetry and narrative nonfiction published in national and academic literary journals, including Gertrude Press, Radius, The Legendary, the Cantab Poetry Anthology, the National Poetry Slam Anthology “High Desert Voices,” and The Lowestoft Chronicle. Featured on Season Five of HBO’s Def Poetry. There is a chapter devoted to Caroline’s life and work in Camille Colatosti’s book, To Be An Artist: Musicians, Visual Artists, Writers, and Dancers Speak. Caroline has shared stages and classrooms with Alicia Keys, Livingston Taylor, Melissa Ferrick, Donna De Lory, Mary Lambert, Danez Smith, and Yasiin Bey (Mos Def), and has writing published alongside Gillian Welch, Mike Reid, and Pat Pattison, among others. As an educator, Caroline’s original curriculum inspire authentic artistry and are informed by diverse approaches to wellness and awareness; her education and training in multiple artistic disciplines, physical and psychological health sciences, and various mind/body and yoga techniques combine to form unique classroom experiences for students of all levels. St. Peter’s Fiesta, which will be held June 24 - June 28, 2020, is a local celebration that has grown over the years to become a city-wide party. 100th Anniversary of the International Fisherman’s Cup This Labor Day weekend, the City of Gloucester celebrates the 100th Anniversary of the International Fisherman’s Cup! In 1920, after the America’s Cup was cancelled due to “excessive” winds over 20 knots, fishing captains muttered that their weatherly vessels, the steadfast fishing schooner, would never cancel for these light winds! The challenge was set and history was made. The International Fisherman’s Cup, a race for the fishing fleet between Nova Scotia and Gloucester, began that very year. The 36th Annual Gloucester Schooner Festival is a city-wide celebration that commemorates this wonderful heritage, the race, and the legacy of our fishing fleet. With a weekend full of activities, you will not want to miss this once-in-a-lifetime anniversary. Events include dory races, Maritime Heritage Day, dockside tours of vessels, schooner challenge races, schooner charters, lighted boat parade, public sails, fireworks, and an international Parade of Sail. Essex As the birthplace of the fried clam, thanks to the Woodman’s Family Restaurant, this picturesque community yields some of the finest seafood on Cape Ann. Antiquing, a premier Essex attraction for generations, remains a favorite pastime for the locals as well as visitors. Shipbuilding has been part of Essex’s heritage for more than 400 years, and draws people from far and wide to admire what it takes to build the beautiful watercraft, some still sailing Cape Ann harbors and waterways today. The Essex Shipbuilding Museum is one stop that is a must see to truly appreciate the incredible ship Lobster at Woodman's of Essex building heritage of this small community. Kayaking or taking a cruise down the Essex River will surely give you a unique view of the tidal salt marsh as you meander with the river outward Conomo Point and Ipswich Bay.

Founded as Jeffrey’s Creek in the mid-1800s, this town is located at the southern end of Cape Ann. In 1989 the state legislature made the name official as a means to differentiate the town from its larger neighbor to the North. A trip to Singing Beach, aptly named because of how the sand resonates when you walk on it, or Tuck’s Point is worth your time and then some. Beautiful retail shops, restaurants and galleries fill the town of just over 5,000 residents. The Manchester Historical Museum’s Trask House is a must-see to get the complete story of this town known for its beautiful historic architecture.
