Parallel 44 Winery

Nestled in the rolling hills of Northeastern Wisconsin, Parallel 44 Winery is a destination that promises more than just exceptional wine; it offers an experience embodying the Midwest's heart and soul. Located a short drive from Green Bay, this winery is a must-visit for anyone looking to savor the fruits of Wisconsin’s burgeoning wine industry while immersing themselves in the region's natural beauty.

The story of Parallel 44 Winery begins with a dream shared by its founders, Steve Johnson and Maria Milano. Inspired by their love for wine and a deep connection to their Wisconsin roots, they set out to prove that the Midwest could produce world-class wines. The winery’s name, Parallel 44, is a nod to the latitude it shares with renowned wine regions such as Bordeaux, France, and Tuscany, Italy.

In 2005, Steve and Maria planted their first vines, facing the challenges of a climate more known for its cold winters than wine. With determination and innovative techniques, they embraced grape varieties suited to Wisconsin’s unique terroir, such as Marquette, Frontenac, and La Crescent. These hardy grapes thrive in the region’s soil and climate, producing distinctive and delicious wines.

When you arrive at Parallel 44, you’ll be struck by the stunning scenery. The winery’s vineyard sprawls across 10 acres of gently rolling hills, offering panoramic views that change with the seasons. In the summer, the lush

green vines create a serene backdrop, while autumn brings a vibrant tapestry of colors that’s nothing short of breathtaking.

The winery’s tasting room is warm and inviting, with floor-to-ceiling windows that let you soak in the views while sampling their wines. Visitors can enjoy guided tastings, where knowledgeable staff share insights into the winemaking process and the unique qualities of each wine. For those looking to linger, the outdoor patio is the perfect spot to sip a glass of wine while taking in the peaceful surroundings.

Parallel 44 isn’t just a place to taste wine; it’s a hub of activity and celebration. The winery hosts various events throughout the year, from live music performances and wine release parties to its signature “Frozen Tundra Wine Fest” in the winter. These events offer a chance to connect with other wine lovers and experience the vibrant community that has grown around Parallel 44.

Parallel 44 Winery is more than just a destination; it’s a testament to the power of vision and perseverance. Steve and Maria’s journey from dreamers to award-winning winemakers is an inspiration to anyone who believes in the potential of their home and the value of following their passion.

Green Bay's

Craft Cocktail Scene

Tony Oczus has been a huge part of Green Bay’s spirited scene for over 12 years. From his early days opening hot spots like The Libertine and Proof to his current role as Master Mixologist at Legacy Hotel, his name has become synonymous with craft cocktails in the area.

“The Libertine was a catalyst for the emerging cocktail scene in Green Bay. I had an amazing staff and after we closed, they went out and spread the Gospel according to cocktails.”

Featured in outlets like Travel Wisconsin, The New York Times, and Men’s Journal, where his first bar, The Libertine, was listed among the “19 Best

Green Bay is no stranger to its legendary beer culture, but now the craft cocktail scene is getting in on the action, making some serious moves. With inventive mixes and bold flavors, these spots are drawing in thirsty locals and visitors alike. Whether you’re here for game day or just soaking in the sights, the city’s cocktail scene is ready to shake things up.

Undiscovered Cocktail Bars in America.” His creations have helped turn Green Bay into a destination for cocktail lovers.

WHAT MAKES OUR COCKTAILS GREAT

Much of the magic comes from close collaboration with local farmers. This farm-to-table approach allows bartenders and mixologists to experiment with fresh ingredients like wildflowers, herbs, and seasonal produce.

And speaking of seasons, that’s another perk we enjoy in Wisconsin. Our four distinct seasons mean mixologists can showcase different flavors and ingredients throughout the year, creating drink menus that always feel exciting and fresh.

A MOMENT FOR MOCKTAILS

It’s not just about the spirits; mocktails are also enjoying their time in the spotlight. Gone are the days when those not drinking alcohol would have to settle for a glass of juice or soda. Green Bay mixologists are elevating non-alcoholic drinks using hydrosols, infused herbs, and N/A spirits that add a level of complexity and creativity.

COCKTAILS TO TRY WHILE YOU’RE HERE

Want to experience Green Bay’s craft cocktail scene firsthand? Here are some cocktails we recommend trying while you’re visiting:

Bacon Fat Washed Old-Fashioned

A trendy twist on the classic Old-Fashioned, this cocktail at Cardinal’s Crest Rooftop Gastropub inside the Legacy Hotel features bacon-washed bourbon, spiced maple syrup, clove, nutmeg, and Havana & Hide aged bitters, adding savory, smoky layers.

Strawberry Fields Forever

This aromatic cocktail from Iron Duck Restaurant blends their house-made strawberry-rhubarb shrub with gin, lemon, and egg, then it’s finished with a cardamom mist.

Goodnight & Good Luck

This cocktail is a true masterpiece, created by another master mixologist, Leng Vue of Parlor Cocktails. The recipe includes Four Roses Bourbon, Benedictine herbal liqueur, Pimms, orange liqueur, mango, and clove smoke. Once you try it, you’ll be craving it forever.

Singapore Sling

This drink from Paradise North Distillery combines their very own Essen House gin and Essen House cherry bounce, grenadine, triple sec, almond, and pineapple.

Old Money

This luxuriously smoky cocktail from Bleu Restaurant + Lounge features Maker’s Mark bourbon, Luxardo cherry liqueur, cherry syrup, fresh lemon juice, a Luxardo cherry garnish, and cherry-wood smoke for a truly indulgent experience.

Rhubarb Ginger Press

This bright, refreshing cocktail from Rustique Pizzeria + Lounge in Suamico combines rhubarb ginger gin with a splash of lemon and soda. The finished product is a light, tangy drink with just a hint of ginger spice—perfect for a casual afternoon or evening sip.

Tao of Bourbon

Created by mixologist Branden Seefeld at Amphora Wine Bar, this balanced blend of sweet, sour, bitter, salty, and savory will impress the heck out of your taste buds. In addition to bourbon, the cocktail contains lemon, vanilla syrup, Peychaud’s bitters, and Chinese five spice.

Bee’s Knees Brulee

This decadent drink from Chefusion combines Hendrick’s gin, honey, lemon, egg, cream, and butterfly pea tea. It’s smooth, creamy, and brimming with botanical flavors — it’s a treat that’s just as fun to drink as it is to photograph for your Instagram grid.

Green Bay’s Outdoor Recreation Guide for Indoor People

Northeast Wisconsin is practically made for adventure seekers and outdoor fanatics. It’s a place where you can hike through pine forests, bike backwoods trails, fish the bay, snowshoe over fresh snow, and so much more. As the gateway to the Northwoods, thousands travel to this corner of the state each year to dive into the outdoors.

But let’s be real—not everyone’s idea of a good time involves battling mosquitoes, sleeping in a tent, or touching a slimy walleye. Maybe your outdoor experience threshold stops at a picnic in the park, or perhaps you’re more of an indoor person who just likes the view.

Whether you’re a mosquito magnet, fish-phobic, or just prefer to make your picks from the comfort of an airconditioned living room, this guide is for you!

A WALK IN THE PARK (LITERALLY)

Recommending a city park might sound like the easy way out for outdoor activities, but trust us. Green Bay’s parks are on another level. Here are some top picks for enjoying nature without having to go full wilderness:

Pamperin Park

2801 County Road RK, Green Bay, WI 54303

Gently rolling hills, a peaceful creek, and plenty of picnic spots tucked under the trees. Pamperin Park has that outdoorsy feel with added creature comforts, like free Wi-Fi at the pavilion (for that quick check-in on your Insta feed or maybe your email—no judgment here). It’s the perfect blend of nature and connectivity.

Joliet Park

1734 Harbor Lights Rd, Green Bay, WI 54313

Right on the shoreline, Joliet Park offers beautiful bay views and a shale shoreline where you can search for fossils. Ducks and other local wildlife are often hanging out too, adding to the tranquil vibe. Plus, parking’s just a stone’s throw away— ideal for quick escapes if the mosquitos start biting!

Bay Beach Wildlife Sanctuary

Urban Safari

For animal lovers who aren’t about to pitch a tent in the Northwoods but still want a taste of Wisconsin’s wildlife, Bay Beach Wildlife Sanctuary is the place to be! As Green Bay’s largest city park and an “urban wildlife refuge,” it’s all the adventure of the wild with no need to purchase bear spray beforehand.

Check out the animal nursery, meet live birds of prey, and feed the waterfowl before you hit the trail, where you’ll encounter captive cougars, gray wolves, foxes, raves, and more.

A DAY AT THE BEACH

If you’re in the mood for some beach time, Green Bay has you covered with some great, easy-access options. Head east to the cozy town of Algoma, where Crescent Beach offers a beautiful stretch of sandy shoreline and an award-winning half-mile boardwalk along Lake Michigan.

CHASING WATERFALLS

There’s something undeniably magical about seeing a waterfall up close. Fortunately, Green Bay has some beautiful waterfall spots that let you soak in this natural magic without a major expedition.

Start with one of the area’s best-kept secrets: Fonferek Glen. Often called a “hidden gem.” Located along the Niagara Escarpment, Fonferek Glen boasts a scenic 30-foot waterfall, unique cliff views, and even a stone archway you can walk under—no hardcore hiking required.

Next up is Wequiock Falls, nestled in one of Brown County’s smallest parks, just a quick turn off the highway. This 25-foot waterfall spills over another striking section of the Niagara Escarpment, and you can easily get down into the gorge via a well-maintained staircase.

WHERE THE BUFFALO ROAM

For a truly unique animal experience just outside Green Bay, make a stop at the Buffalo Overlook at Oneida Nation Farm. This peaceful, scenic spot lets you catch a close-up glimpse of the majestic buffalo herd, all from the comfort of a covered viewing area. The overlook also features plenty of fascinating info about the buffalo and the history of the herd, so you can learn a bit while you snap photos.

EVENING GLOW

Whether you’re planning a romantic evening or just craving a quiet moment of solitude, there’s something truly magical about watching a vibrant sunset over the bay. For a front-row seat to the show, start at Communiversity Park at UW-Green Bay, where the campus meets the shore. Or, head over to Red River County Park and sink your feet into the soft sand as you watch the sky transform. Both spots are perfect for capturing Green Bay’s golden hour magic.

A BLOOMING CITY OASIS

Spanning an impressive 47 acres, the enchanting Green Bay Botanical Garden features 21 meticulously curated gardens, showcasing over 98,000 plants and flowers that transform the landscape into a vibrant tapestry of colors and fragrances. Plus, it’s committed to accessibility, with wheelchairs and motorized scooters available, ensuring that all visitors can experience its beauty.

A Journey Through Time: A Peek at Green Bay’s History

Travel is one of the most compelling ways we can engage with history. How we experience the past can help shape the future. The pursuit of adventure, or tourism, has evolved into a powerhouse for preserving and exploring an area’s riveting heritage.

Green Bay’s own legacy mirrors such a narrative. It is filled with allure, historical landmarks, and remarkable stories, all waiting to be discovered by curious travelers. This merging of the past and exploration enriches an opportunity for visitors and works to ensure these memories are preserved for generations to come.

Take a peek back into the past at old-time Green Bay, famously known as Wisconsin’s first city, and you'll soon discover the marvels that make it an exceptional place to live, work, play, and visit. It’s a draft-worthy destination where history is always in the starting lineup.

Before Football, There was the Fur Trade

Located in Brown County at the mouth of the Fox River on Lake Michigan, Green Bay offers sweeping water views paralleled to a bustling city skyline. Despite the current picturesque diversity, the city’s roots go back much further. Before the birth of the many current industries and well-

known innovations, there was an abundance of land marked by nature, simplicity, and native culture.

The land’s first inhabitants were indigenous tribes who were drawn to the area due to its rich soil, abundance of fish, easily accessible waterways, and wild game. Life was spent surrounded by the water as it was convenient for canoeing, fishing, and harvesting wild rice, a diet staple that grew generously along the lake inlets.

By the mid-1600s, French explorer Jean Nicolet arrived, meeting the Ho-Chunk tribe at nearby Red Banks. This milestone served as the earliest documented contact between Native Americans and Europeans in the state and eventually paved the pathway for welcoming more settlers.

Fur traders, including Pierre Esprit Radisson and Médard Chouart des Groseilliers, started to arrive in the area, which the French had by then named “La Baye Verte,” (The Green Bay). The waterways served as a main entryway into the interior of the area and largely contributed to the fur trade which was the hub of the region’s economy.

Fur trading involved exchanging animal pelts; beaver was particularly in high demand for its use in hat-making for

European fashion. Local tribes such as the Ho-Chunk, Potawotami, and Menominee were well-known as skilled hunters and trappers and the fur trade encouraged alliances between the groups, visitors, and settlers.

Following the American Revolution in later years, Fort Howard was constructed in Green Bay in 1816. It served as an entrance to Wisconsin and became an accompaniment to the expansive trade industry. Despite being decommissioned in the early 1850s, part of the surviving fort can still be found today at Heritage Hill State Historical Park, a 56-acre open-air museum located in Allouez. Visitors can wander through three of the fort’s remaining structures including the hospital and ward, a guard building, and the officer’s quarters, all of which are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Growth, Innovation, and a Famous Titles

Throughout time, Green Bay began to grow rapidly. Norwegian and Belgian farmers, alongside other European settlers, called the bay home. By the late 1870s, despite the surrounding lake and connected waterways, railroads began to replace steamboats, shaping a new main mode of transportation to and from the Green Bay area.

Ultimately, train travel proved to be efficient and far less time-consuming for both travelers and businesses needing to transport goods. The city became an epicenter for iron smelting, lumber milling, and eventually, the production of paper products - which procured a rather unique outcome.

As one of Green Bay’s leading industries, paper production earned the city a rather comical moniker surrounding a revolutionary invention. It became known as the “Toilet Paper Capital of the World,” as it was the site of the very first splinter-free variety.

The linenizing of this common hygiene product led the Day Street Mill in Green Bay to become the birthplace of Quilted Northern toilet paper. To date, Green Bay’s Broadway mill is also one of the world’s largest tissue recycling plants.

Fittingly, Green Bay holds other notable titles including publishing the state’s first newspaper and being the first city to receive mail. However, these impressive historical feats often follow behind one main recognizable feature of the city: its’ football team.

Undoubtably, many pin Green Bay on the map for being home to the legendary Green Bay Packers, the third oldest team still active in the NFL. Founded by Earl “Curly” Lambeau and George Whitney Calhoun in 1919, Lambeau convinced his employer, the Indian Packing Company, to sponsor the team. The Green Bay Packers, through a few throws of changes, have gone on to win 13 championships, including four Super Bowls - the most in NFL history!
