The Evolution of the White Mountains
he first inhabitants of this region came approximately 10,000 BC after the melting and retreat of the glaciers and continental ice sheets. They discovered a region rich in fish, edible plants and wildlife. Tribes began to unite between 3,000 to 4,000 BC and although winters were long and harsh, subsistence was fairly easy and life was sustainable and relatively peaceful. Established before the 1600s were two tribal branches of the Abenaki Nation. The Penacooks were the western branch and the Penobscots from Maine were the eastern branch. The Penacook confederation had 17 tribes and were about 12,000 strong when the European settlers arrived. They thrived from the meltwaters flowing from Mount Washington and neighboring mountains and lived in dozens of villages along the Pemigewasett and Merimack Rivers and their tributaries to the Atlantic coast. Some Penacook tribal names include Amoskeag, Nashua, Ossipee, Pentucket, Piscataqua, Wachusett and Winnipesaukee just to name a few and are representative of the regions they inhabited. The Pequawkets from the “Conways” were originally Penobscots but changed their allegiance to the Penacooks when settlers began colonizing the White Mountains. Before European settlers arrived in the region, Mount Washington was known by various indigenous people as Kodaak Wadjo - ”the top is so hidden” also, Agiochook - “the place of great spirit” and Waumbik - ”white rocks” and more. The sacred, snow peaked mountain was spiritual and worshiped, so respectfully, Native Americans did not venture upon it. In 1524 Italian explorer Giovanni da Verrazzano in the service of King Francis of France and the first European to explore the entire Atlantic coast, spots from his ship, what we now know as Mt. Washington and the Presidential Range. He describes in his Captain’s Log “high interior mountains” from the coast of what is now Maine. Then came the colonization of the region by Europeans in the 1600s. The turmoil that came with the settling and colonization of the region came at a heavy price for the native tribes. Religious strife between Puritans, Anglicans, Roman Catholics and others in Great Britain sent waves of colonists to America seeking freedom from religious persecution and eventually after decades of escalation, led to war that would spread to North America against the British. In 1679, King Charles II of England declared New Hampshire a royal province, the only state to ever have that distinction. For military reasons, the high quality timbers and lumber of the region had been purchased from Noway, for the Royal Navy’s warships. Ship builders specifically sought the Eastern White Pines (King Pines) for their main masts. Along with other prized woods and by-products for ship building, the White Mountains had what ship builders wanted and the colonist could help. Native Americans would prove to be a deterrent which would eventually lead to war against the colonist, each other, and along with diseases brought by colonists, would ultimately lead to their demise. The pioneering era of the White Mountains began with early names such as Darby Field, who made the first recorded accent up Mount Washington in 1642 and John Josselyn who along with Darby Field began documenting the area. They documented the regions trails, climate, geography, rivers, indigenous people, and produced the first maps and trail guides of the area. Many would follow and as more and more folks ventured to the region it was apparent that the area was not just rich in beauty, but wealthy in resources. Over the next 200 years many would come to seek adventure and livelihoods and develop the areas around the Presidential Range. Their names such as Crawford, Pinkham, Carter, Huntington and Sawyer just to name a few, adorn our roadways and landmarks today. The White Mountains would become some of the first tourist destinations and attractions in the country, including the carriage road up Mt. Washington in 1861, considered the first man-made tourist attraction in the country. Lumber was a huge commodity for the entire region but carting King Pines to the coast with Oxen and carts was the work of hardy men and Kings and was not very industrious or economical. Then came the trains. The first logging trains were formed in the 1870s, to harvest the seemingly endless stands of old-growth timber. It was up to the privately owned railroads who played a key role in the removal of most of the virgin timber in the White Mountains and areas north. The sprawling mainline railroads into the mountains made the logging railroads possible. Each intersected with a mainline, helping to move sawmill products to market and helped get supplies to secluded logging camps and remote villages. There were 19 logging railroads operated in the White Mountains peaking in 1895 and dwindling down to just a few in the 1920s. Resources were obviously not infinite and much of the region was stripped down to bare earth which is hard to imagine looking at it today. Trains would go on to become an important part of the growth of tourism in the region bringing tourist to relaxing summer vacations and skiing on our slopes in the winter. Along with tourism and industry, came roads, villages, towns and sprawling communities. The natural beauty and accessibility made the White Mountains a tourist destination and Mount Washington along with its surrounding mountains, rivers and lakes had also been growing as a natural playground. That brings us to where we have evolved today. The entire White Mountains have been decorated with picturesque towns and villages, and adorned with attractions, hotels, quaint shops and factory outlet centers. Because of its long history, natural beauty and endless things to do and see, the growth continues at a feverish pace. Please enjoy it and protect it!

hopping has become a major attraction of its own throughout the White Mountains. Our focus is on locally owned and independently operated retailers who offer a more personal experience. The reasons to shop at an independent retailer are many. From casual encounters with locals who can point you in the right direction to quality food and services as well as finding unique and more locally made “where did you get those?” items. So saddle up and head out, but be careful. Look both ways when pulling out and try not to get into to much of a frenzy. Best View White Horse Ledge!

What you just might see. This is just some of the wildlife you may have The Raccoon likes to feed a chance of seeing in the White Mountains. along streams and Keep your eyes peeled! lakes, looking for fish, frogs, crayfish and other aquatic animals. They like to clean their food with nimble, human like fingers and eat with their hands. Keep your eyes to the sky when traveling around the area and you have a good chance of spotting a Bald Eagle soaring over one of our pristine lakes or rivers.
The Moose is the largest relative of the deer family. They feed by browsing on trees and marshy vegetation and need to eat 40+ pounds of food each day. Moose watching is a great early evening activity.
Pileated Woodpeckers are good at keeping out of sight even though they can be as large as 18 inches tall. It will make large rectangular holes in rotting trees.
The Red Fox has a doglike face with a bushy tail that gets bushier in the winter. They have great nighttime vision which is the most likely time to see one. The Snowshoe Hare is a rare sight. Shy, elusive and camouflaged, makes this member of the rabbit family a challenge to spot in the winter.
46
Loons are usually found in pairs. Each breeding pair claims and defends a small territory on a lake or pond. These birds spend their entire life on the water, coming ashore only to nest. They migrate to coastal waters in the winter.
Bobcats roam most of North America and are seldom seen. Your best chance of seeing one is in the winter when food is scarce. They are good swimmers but rarely go into the water. Did you know that the further north bobcats live, the larger they grow? In woodland areas of North America, the Golden Eagle’s home range may cover an area of 200 square miles. When hunting, it swoops down on its prey at speeds up to 95 miles per hour. Coyotes are becoming more visible these days. Man has helped to increase the coyote population by getting rid of the wolf in most of the United States. They feed mostly on small rodents and pounce on their prey just like a cat.
The Black Bear is the smallest North American bear. It is the least aggressive and is of no real threat to people. Not all Black Bears are black. Some have rusty brown or gray and black coats. They are often seen looking for food at restaurant trash cans.
The Peregrine Falcon is one of the largest falcons. Their eyes are actually larger than human eyes and can spot their prey from a height of 1,000 feet. Their population is on the rise and can be seen breeding and nesting on our tall granite cliffs and ledges. PLEASE REMEMBER... Cute as they may seem, these are wild animals. Use caution in viewing, and never approach. If you find a young animal, stay away! Its parent is likely around the corner! 47
The Long-Tailed Weasel also called Ermine, sports a reddish brown summer coat during the warmer months. In the fall they begin shedding their summer coat, replacing its fur with longer, white fur to help camouflage them from predators in the cold winter months. Their tail, even in winter maintains its black tip.
White-tailed Deer are common and can be seen browsing along fields around twilight. The young fawn is not too common to see as they stay hidden for most of their first year. Spots which help to camouflage them, fade away with time.

Facts & Trivia
There are 48 mountains in New Hampshire that are 4,000 feet or higher. Mount Washington is the highest at 6,288 feet and is also the highest in New England. There are over 6,000 people who have climbed all 48 mountains to become official members of the Four Thousand Footer Club.
Number of steps from the Glen to the top of Mt. Washington..... ...about 17,000!
For a wager of $60, Nathanial Perkins claimed he could run down the Glen Path from the top of Mt. Washington in under eight minutes. He did it in under seven minutes back in 1853.
John Irving from N.Y. walked to the summit of Mt. Washington in just under 2 hours back in 1855.
The first vehicle to reach the summit of Mt. Washington, a few days before it was completed in July, 1861. The Road was officially opened Aug. 8th and is considered America’s oldest man-made attraction.
In 1880 there were 17 hotels in North Conway and a room went for about $3.00 per night.
Average snowfall on Mount Washington is over 500 inches per year. That’s over 40 feet!
The highest wind ever recorded in this hemisphere was on top of Mount Washington. Wind speed was recorded on April 12th, 1934 at a terrifying 231 miles per hour. State Fruit
The pumpkin is New Hampshire’s official State fruit, thanks to a group of grade school children learning how to pass a state bill. They submitted and received approval to make the N.H. State fruit, the pumpkin.
The first motorized ascent of Mount Washington was by Feelan O. Stanley, of Stanley Steamer fame in 1899.
Abel Crawford was 75 years old when he became the first person to ride a horse to the summit of Mount Washington. 52
New Hampshire Almanac NH State Motto The words "Live Free or Die," written by General John Stark, the state's most distinguished hero of the Revolutionary War, July 31, 1809, is the official motto of the state. The motto was part of a volunteer toast which General Stark sent to his wartime comrades, in which he declined an invitation to head up a 32nd anniversary reunion of the 1777 Battle of Bennington in Vermont, because of poor health. The toast said in full: "Live Free Or Die; Death Is Not The Worst of Evils."
The world famous profile of the Old Man of the Mountain is the official state emblem. It gave in to the elements and fell in May of 2003.
State Tree State Flower
The White Birch tree, Betula papyrifera, is the state tree of New Hampshire. The white birch is also called the canoe birch or the paper birch, for understandable reasons. Native Americans used its bark to make canoes, and it was also used for writing paper.
The Purple Lilac, Syringa vulgaris, is the state flower of New Hampshire. The purple lilac was first imported from England and planted at the Portsmouth home of Governor Benning Wentworth in 1750. It was adopted as our state's flower in 1919. The purple lilac was ultimately chosen, because it "is symbolic of that hardy character of the men and women of the Granite State."

• Order: Artiodactyla
Moose Facts • Family: Cervidae (the largest of the deer family)
• Genus & Species: Alces alces
THE BULL MOOSE Average Length 8-10 feet long.
Average Height 5-7 feet at the shoulder (up to 8 feet).
Average Weight 1200-1500 pounds (up to 1800 pounds).
Average Life Span 10-15 years (up to 20). The moose is the largest of the deer family. They are found throughout the Northern Hemisphere and their range coincides with the coniferous forests of Northern Asia, Europe and North America. They are usually solitary and spend their warmer months in low-lying areas near lakes, ponds and marshes. During colder months they will move to higher ground into the trees where there is less snow, more food and protection from the cold winters. Moose are even-toed herbivorous (plant eating) mammals. A moose may eat 25 - 45 pounds of vegetation a day, and can hold 100 pounds of food in its stomach. Their teeth are designed for eating plants, bark, bushes, twigs, and small trees. During the summer months moose will eat underwater plants by swimming right in the water and submerging for up to a minute for food. In the winter moose will eat twigs, berries, strip bark from trees and paw through the snow for vegetation. The word moose is from Native American origins and means “twig eater” and “animal that strips bark off trees”.
Moose are different colors depending on the time of year and their age. Adults are light brown to dark black while calves are usually a rusty red color. When tormented by bugs the moose will submerge itself or roll in mud for relief and protection. Male moose are called bulls, females are called cows and the young are calves. A bull is about 1/3 larger than a cow. A cow may have one or two calves each spring. A calf is born weighing around 30 pounds at birth. A newborn calf can stand in one day and swim in several weeks. By their first winter they will weigh between 300 - 400 pounds. Bull moose can have antlers that are 6 feet wide. They shed their antlers every year in the Winter and regrow them with larger ones starting in early Spring. By late summer they are fully grown. Moose can run 35 miles an hour through the thick woods. Moose are excellent swimmers and can swim 6 miles an hour for several hours. That’s 12 miles without stopping!

Cruise the Kanc!
Stretching just a bit over 34 miles from Lincoln to Conway, the Kancamagus Highway (pronounced cang•aw•maw•gus) is one of the most scenic roadways in the entire world. It was a crucial part of the developing of the White Mountains and still remains so because it links the western side of the region to the eastern side. It’s importance to the region is very evident as, the first and most important thing you must learn when you move here, is how to pronounce it properly. Depending on where you moved here from, it could take years. Once you’ve mastered it, you can simply call it the Kanc. While you’re here, take a ride across the Kanc. It is open year round but use caution and common sense in the winter months. It climbs to almost 3,000 feet and the weather up there can be much different than in Lincoln and Conway. As you travel across the Kanc, you can’t help but to imagine the history of who was here in the past as well as how and why did this road ever get built.
The mountains here perpetuate the names of New Hampshire’s most legendary Native Americans... Passaconaway (Child of the Bear) was a peace-loving chief who, in 1627, united over 17 tribes of Central New England into the Panacook Confederacy. As first “Sagamon,” (wise leader) he ruled until his death in 1669. Kancamagus (The Fearless One), grandson of Passaconaway, succeeded his uncle, Wonalancet, around 1684 as third and final Sagamon of the Penacook Confederacy. Kancamagus tried to keep peace between the tribes and pioneering white, until aggravated English harassments brought war and bloodshed. The confederacy’s tribes scattered after 1691, and Kancamagus and his followers moved north to upper New Hampshire or into Canada. WILDERNESS TRAIL SAWYER POND SCENIC AREA

About 1725, Paugus (The Oak), was Chief of the Pequawket Tribe along the Saco River. Later, around 1760, Chocorua, brave and perhaps a chief of the Ossipee Tribe, lived near today’s Conway or Albany. Legends agree that Chocorua died on the summit of the mountain which now bears his name. THEN CAME THE SETTLERS... Passaconaway, or Albany Intervale, the fertile land on the Swift River, 12 miles from Conway, was first settled by white men around 1790. The Russell Colbath House, located here, was built in the early 1800’s, and today is used as a Forest Service Historic Site and Information Center. (Open daily in season). Early settlers eked out a living in this isolated valley for over a century by farming, taking in summer boarders, and logging, which was at its peak around 1900. THE HIGHWAY... A town road to Passaconaway was completed in 1837. One hundred years later the route was extended eastward and westward from Passaconaway and from Lincoln. The two sections were at last completed and opened to thru traffic in 1959. In addition to the Russell Colbath House, the Saco Ranger District Office and Information Center is located at the east end of the Kancamagus Highway. This center provides visitor information about the highway, related facilities, and forest management activities. A visitor’s Information Center is also located at the west end of the highway in Lincoln. CRUISE THE KANC... Go ahead and take a ride. The Kanc offers the best of recreational activities including hiking, fishing, picnicking, swimming, historical landmarks, and breathtaking photo opportunities.

Short But Sweet Cruises Around The Valley West Side Road - Conway, North Conway & Bartlett Here’s a nice scenic tour throug the farmlands of the Saco Valley. This is a short drive along West Side Road going from Conway to North Conway and on into Bartlett. Let’s start in Conway at the intersection of Route 16 and Washington Street. It’s the first set of lights if you’re heading north through Conway Village. Heading north on Washington Street you’ll bare left onto West Side Road. Along the way you will see the “Conways” from a more timeless viewpoint. You are certain to see horses, sheep, cows and other farm animals and may even see deer and moose out lingering in the fields. There’s a couple of covered bridges in Conway and in season some farm stands along the way. Take a left at the stop sign and you can continue on to Rt. 302 in Bartlett. Continuing on about a mile on your left there is a seasonal road which will bring you to the top of Cathedral Ledge. There are signs to direct you. From the top of Cathedral Ledge you can see the entire Mount Washington Valley.
Five Mile Circuit - Jackson This is a beautiful drive around the quintessential New England town of Jackson. We’ll start from the covered bridge that is the main entrance to Jackson Village. Go on through the covered bridge and you’re in Jackson Village. Stay left at the fork and you’ll go over a small stone bridge over the Wildcat River. Take a right after the bridge onto Carter Notch Road. It is Rt. 16B and the beginning of the Five Mile Circuit. It runs along the Wildcat River which is a federally designated Wild & Scenic River. You will pass along the famous & breathtaking Jackson Falls. Continue on and you will soon see the timeless and grand Eagle Mountain House and Golf Course. Continue on past the horses and pasture land until you see a road and bridge on the right. It is Rt. 16B and also part of the Five Mile Circuit. Take that right turn and continue on until the stop sign. Take a right at that stop sign and your still on Rt. 16B. Continue on back down the hill back into Jackson Village. When you get down to the village, bare right and go back over the little stone bridge and stay straight back out to Route 16. That’s the other way into Jackson. From there at Rt. 16 you can go left or (south) back to Glen, or even better, take a right and head up to Pinkham Notch. (See page 20 for more info on Pinkham Notch)
North South Road - North Conway This is a great addition to the Mount Washington Valley that is scenic and can save you some time if “The Strip” is busy. It starts or ends on Rt. 302 in Redstone and runs by the back of Settlers’ Green Outlet Village where there is an entrance to tha mall. From there if you’re heading north you will see The Green Hills Preserve and Rattle Snake Ridge to the east.
