THINGS TO SEE &

DO IN HALIFAX

WATERFRONT HIGHLIGHTS While the list of places to love in Halifax is certainly long, the waterfront will always be close to the top. In the summer the boardwalk is busy with tourists and locals, and you can’t help but feel caught up in the excitement and energy! Here is a short list of highlights to get you started.

FOOD & DRINK

With dozens of fantastic restaurants and patios ranging from a grouping of “seaside snack shacks” to local favourites Bicycle Thief and Gahan House, there is something for everyone!

HAMMOCKS*

The Hammocks on the Halifax boardwalk are a place for passersby to rest and take a great photo, all while enjoying the easy-breezy east coast lifestyle.

DRUNKEN LAMPPOSTS

On the boardwalk it’s hard to miss three bendy light posts, known to most as “The Drunken Lampposts”. Installed as a temporary display in 2013 after it appeared at Toronto’s Nuit Blanche, the displays made a big impression on the city, and have become a permanent fixture on the Halifax waterfront.

HALIFAX SEAPORT FARMERS’ MARKET

Located right on the waterfront with a beautiful rooftop patio, it’s no wonder people make a Saturday morning tradition out of heading to the market for breakfast and enjoying the view.

“THE FLOATING BOARDWALK”*

The Sea Bridge, commonly known as “The Floating Boardwalk” is a 520 foot floating dock that’s open 24/7 (the bridge lights up after dark). Connecting the Cable Wharf South Side and the Museum Wharf North (where CSS Acadia is berthed), it’s a fun – and sometimes wavy – way to cross the boardwalk.

RENTAL ACTIVITIES*

Along the waterfront you will come across lots of rental and tour companies offering more ways to experience the Halifax waterfront! Try a Harbour Hopper tour, kayaking with Kayak Halifax, segwaying with Segway Nova Scotia or biking with I Heart Bikes.

STUBBORN GOAT BEER GARDEN*

There aren’t many things better than enjoying a cold beer on a patio… except when that patio is literally on the Halifax boardwalk amidst the summer hustle and bustle! * Open seasonally

ICONIC IKEA

645 Cutler Avenue, Dartmouth-Cole Harbour

The largest IKEA store in North America is now open in Dartmouth Crossing, and at 330,000 square feet, there is a lot to take in and a lot to purchase!

REVIEW THE WEBSITE FIRST – IKEA REQUIRES TACTICAL STRATEGY

Help narrow down your choices by shopping around on the website or the IKEA catalogue first. Check out their weekly sales, review product recalls and announcements online, or search by room or product type.

VISIT DURING THE WEEK

IKEA is no different than any other store in that it’s generally more crowded on the weekend. The store is much less busy on weekdays or evenings, so try to visit then if you value your personal space.

EAT, THEN SHOP

IKEA isn’t just known for furniture, they also sell delicious snacks. There is a large restaurant on the top floor, and a smaller bistro and Swedish food market downstairs next to the exit.

CHECK YOURSELF OUT

The staff are great at IKEA, but with the large variety of products they have to scan in, and the multitude of questions they have to answer, it may be faster to use a self-serve check-out!

This store doesn’t offer plastic bags (it is the company’s most sustainable building in Canada, after all), so be sure to bring some of your own, or buy a reusable one at the cash.
