FERRY CROSSING THE HALIFAX HARBOUR
WELCOME! Halifax isn’t one single destination, it’s a collection of communities and cultures, a mix of urban hustle and rural relaxation characterized by a friendly, laid-back warmth and vibrant local pride - all located in one unique and beautiful region on the edge of the Atlantic Ocean. Halifax is a large coastal area in Nova Scotia, Canada, made up of nine distinct regions that span from the picturesque Peggy’s Cove Coastal Region to bustling Downtown Halifax and up along the pristine Eastern Shore. Enjoy fresh lobster dinners, kayak around hidden coves and secluded islands, explore boutique shopping and attend world class events – all right here in Halifax. We look forward to welcoming you in 2021 and beyond.
WELCOME
Halifax, known as Kjipuktuk, is located on sacred land that has been the site of human activity for over 12,000 years. We are in Mi’kma’ki, the ancestral and unceded territory of the Mi’kmaq and we acknowledge them as the past, present and future caretakers of this land. TRAVEL SAFELY For the most up-to-date information on the Government of Nova Scotia’s response to COVID-19, travel advisories and restrictions and guidance, visit novascotia.ca/coronavirus. Life is unpredictable – now more than ever! We encourage you to call ahead or check online before visiting any business listed in our guide to ensure they are open and accepting visitors.
A NOTE FROM
MAYOR
MIKE SAVAGE I always look forward to welcoming visitors to our beautiful port city and the many special places that stretch out from our vibrant downtown to coastal villages, ocean beaches, verdant farmland and unspoiled wilderness escapes.
I trust that the caring, compassion and support for fellow citizens and businesses that has carried us through a difficult 2020 will be the hallmark that defines Halifax for future visitors eager to experience it firsthand.
The 2020 season kept us close to home, an opportunity to rediscover the beauty and variety that is such a draw to visitors in normal times. My hope is this will make us even better ambassadors when we again welcome visitors to enjoy experiences that are as broad as their imagination.
So, come visit us soon. We can’t wait to see you.

NOVA SCOTIAN CULTURE
WILLIAM E. DEGARTHE MEMORIAL PEGGY'S COVE
Immerse yourself in the fascinating cultural, maritime and military heritage of a city founded in 1749 on land that has been inhabited for over 12,000 years.
CELTIC & GAELIC CULTURE
ACADIAN CULTURE
Centuries ago, Gaelic speaking immigrants from Ireland and Scotland came by the tens of thousands and made Nova Scotia their home. From storytelling and songs, to step dancing and fiddle music, Gaelic culture has shaped Nova Scotia’s identity.
Acadian culture infuses the region with its vibrant, jaunty rhythms and the romance of its language. The largest concentration of French-speaking people in Nova Scotia live right here in Halifax!
The famous "kitchen party", often referred to as a "céilidh" ("a visit") is a common occurrence and is a great way to share language, song, music, dance and story.
AFRICAN NOVA SCOTIAN CULTURE
MI’KMAW CULTURE
The story of Black Nova Scotians is one of many diverse groups. The community of Africville, located along the Bedford Basin, was once home to many African Nova Scotians until it was suddenly demolished in the 1960s to make room for industrial expansion.
For more than ten thousand years, this rugged, sea-swept peninsula has been home to the Mi’kmaw people and our culture has been enriched with their art, song, language and spirituality.
