“The Curious Incident of the Bide in the Daytime!” **
If you happen to have spent your ‘exercise hours’, like many others during these lockdown months, walking along Mill Drove in Bourne, you will perhaps have seen a young couple beavering away at a curious structure, taking shape on the drive of one of the houses there.
Thoughts might have included: What on earth is that going to be? Is it an extension to the house? Why is it on a metal frame with wheels? Just how big will it actually get? Could you perhaps live in it?
Well, the “Magnificent Mill Drove Mystery” is about to be resolved, following a most enlightening guided tour I was fortunate enough to have been granted recently by said couple, Scott and Caroline. In brief, it will be, (when completed, hopefully, in September) a “Contemporary Tiny House Holiday Retreat”, called “The Bide Cabin”.
Caroline and Scott take up the story:
“We were on a visit to the Bauhaus Museum in Berlin, where a number of young designers and architects had designed and built a series of ‘Tiny Houses’, each one constructed on a 2.5m x 6m trailer base. We were totally inspired by how each designer had approached the parameters of the challenge and made unique practical homes/ workshops. After a year of planning in London, we moved to Caroline’s parents’ home in Bourne and commenced the build in April 2020. Scott is a qualified architect and Caroline has a background in furniture design and interiors; together, we designed the cabin.
It has been constructed on a flatbed trailer from Holland, designed especially for ‘Tiny Houses’. With no building experience, we have built the cabin together, learning as we go. The cabin will feature a super-king size bed, wood burning stove, curated library, home cinema and outdoor pizza oven. We are trying to use new technologies and alternative materials to showcase sustainable and low-energy design, incorporating features such as sheep’s wool insulated walls, a water-less toilet, a mist shower and mechanical heat recovery. We will move the cabin from Bourne to Dorset in September, where it will be let out for holidays on a vineyard.” For further information: E-mail hello@thebide.com Web thebide.com Social @thebidecabin
“ A message of thanks from Jake Jacobs, Secretary
of the Bourne Branch of the Royal British Legion:
“With kind permission fro m Bourne United Charities, the Royal British Legion, Bourne Branch, commemorated the seventy-fifth anniversary of this historic event, with a short service of remembrance at the cenotaph in Bourne.
On behalf of our branch, I would like to thank:
• Our Branch President, Lt. Col. Tom Hamilton (Retd.) for the concise history which he gave about this event; this was reiterated on the BBC1 TV “VJ Day Tribute from the Nation” which was aired later that evening. • The Mayor and Mayoress of Bourne, Cllr Colin and Mrs Fiona Pattison, who jointly laid a wreath for the parish of Bourne. Colin later recited the “Kohima Epitaph.” • Jazmin Coia for playing the “Last Post and Reveille.” • Our Branch Chairman, Terry Butler, for saying the “Act of Homage.”
Our Standard Bearer, Mr Ian Hume.
• Gordon’s Photographic for the photographs supplied.
The event went very well despite our current COVID restrictions. The small gathering of public members, some of whom had relatives that were part of this historic 14th Army (the “Forgotten Army”) and others who were prisoners of war during this brutal campaign, were grateful that their loved ones were not forgotten for their service and sacrifice given to our country.

eFOLDi MK 1.5
A New Lightweight Folding Mobility Scooter for our Changing Times
Social distancing guidelines limit the number of trips we make out of our homes, but our mobility still matters. The current COVID-19 restrictions have presented us all with a new set of challenges, but many people are experiencing the significant benefits of the lightweight and practical eFOLDi MK1.5 folding mobility scooter. A recent study showed that 22% of women and 17% of men between the ages of fifty-five to sixtyfive lived with severe long-term activity problems, whilst many others have a more temporary condition. With over 80,000 sold, year on year, mobility scooters have transformed countless lives. However, some scooters can be too heavy to lift and stow, others can be cumbersome and difficult to manoeuvre.
Enter the eFOLDi MK1.5… the world’s lightest single-unit folding mobility scooter!
The MK1.5 can be folded simply in one piece with no need for dismantling and has an 85cm turning radius, a range of 14 miles and a top speed of 8mph. This is a scooter with a weight of 17kg, based on a sturdy aluminium frame capable of carrying up to 120 kg. The eFOLDi will fit in apartment lifts, be easily stowed in a car boot or on public transport, and conveniently parked or folded up in the home. Being so light means the eFOLDi can be checked-in with luggage at the airport, reducing the need for that uncomfortable airport wheelchair. You can, of course, ride the MK1.5 on the pavement but it is also fully ‘road legal’, featuring headlights, brake lights, indicators and a mirror. Send a simple form to the DVLA and you’re registered. Every eFOLDi comes with a twelve month, no quibble, parts and labour warranty, and their Surrey-based customer service team is there for you to rely on for any issues or questions.
