Rutland England’s most rural county…. In the heart of the East Midlands is a small county, largely unspoilt by the modern era; a place where sleepy villages nestle amongst rolling hills and where you can still enjoy traditional village fetes in summer complete with cake competitions, maypole dancing and Morris Men. Rutland has much more to share with you than an array of picturesque village; the fantastic Rutland Water offers both energetic and relaxing pastimes, and Rutland’s two attractive market towns are packed with independent retailers providing a unique shopping experience. Food is a strong passion in Rutland , thanks to the county’s proud heritage of farming and agricultural. There is a strong tradition of supporting local producers which creates an excellent selection of quality food and drink in the county. The local pub is still an important feature of village life, which means you are never far away from a great place to eat. Rutlanders rejoiced when independence was granted from Leicestershire in 1997; and they’ll proudly share this slice of English idyll with you on your next visit.

If you like history, follow the Oakham Heritage Trail and discover the hidden gems around town. Oakham Castle
County Museum
Hidden in the middle of the town is the picturesque Oakham Castle, one of the best examples of domestic Norman architecture in England. The 12th century building is more of a Great Hall than a castle and you can discover the intriguing tradition involving horseshoes and royalty here. 2015 sees the start of a big restoration project, which means the castle will be closed for a while, but it will be worth a visit once it reopens.
A great introduction to the area’s history and also acts as a Visitor Centre, fully stocked with information to help make the most of your visit. The museum displays tell the story of the county, and are complimented by exhibits of archaeology, history and rural life.

Renowned for its excellent range of antiques stores, fine art galleries and book shops, visitors are attracted here from far and wide. Uppingham has a character all of its own and those who live in the town are justifiably proud of it. It offers a traditional shopping experience long since lost in larger towns; many of the local shops are still family run and provide a high level of personal service. The majority of Uppingham’s shops can be found on High Street and Market Place but there are lots of other unique retailers hidden away along ancient alleyways which are worth seeking out. This attractive town has an intriguing history and you can follow the Uppingham Heritage Trail to discover some of the fascinating features.

Stamford Shopping is a real pleasure in Stamford; narrow alleyways and hidden courtyards are home to specialty shops, fine jewellers and designer boutiques while the High Street has a great selection to tempt you. When it’s time to eat, you’ll be spoilt for choice as the town has a reputation for good food. Choose from traditional inns serving home cooked fayre to contemporary restaurants or head to a small cosy café and watch the world go by over the rim of your tea cup. Stamford really bustles with life, especially on market day [Friday] when the pavements are packed; eager shoppers flock here in droves to stock up on delicious local veg, locally reared meats and fresh fish; the buzz around the town is quite intoxicating. However, if peace and quiet is more appealing then tranquillity is guaranteed on the banks of the River Welland which winds its way through Stamford enroute to The Wash; take a seat here for a while and admire the birds and wildlife which bring colour and life to this beautiful river they call home. There’s a huge range of attractions in and around Stamford, start with Stamford Arts Centre, home to the Tourist Information Centre as well as theatre/cinema, assembly room and café. While you’re here, don’t miss a visit to the majestic Burghley House; you’ll recognise this much admired Elizabethan stately home from films including The Da Vinci Code and Pride and Prejudice.
