Some popular fishing locations have recreation areas, toilets and boat-launching facilities. Steep banks line some parts of the river, with sandbars and access points dotted throughout. Nagambie Lakes A LITTLE HISTORY

A LITTLE HISTORY

The Goulburn River surrounds the vineyard on three sides, shaping the environment and climate of Mitchelton. The result – four starkly different soil profiles creating individual vineyards within a vineyard. The Mitchelton team recognise that each individual block bears fruit exhibiting distinctive flavour characters. This intimate and focused approach means that for over 40 years, they have created wines of distinct personality, finesse and longevity. Their Winemaker is Travis Clydesdale and Viticulturalist is John Beresford.

The Strathbogie Ranges are a striking granite massif that rises over 500 metres above sea level. Plunkett Fowles winery, vineyards and homes rest amidst the cool, dry and elevated stone. The Plunkett and Fowles families have a deep appreciation for this granite-rich region. For decades they have worked hard developing extensive local knowledge: from pioneering fruit growing, to understanding the personality of individual vineyard blocks and by experimenting with creative award winning winemaking.

YOUR INVITATION Make a day of it and admire the view from the iconic Mitchelton tower. The Art Gallery always showcases exquisite pieces, and relax with a riverside picnic or BBQ lunch whilst the children exhaust themselves on the playground. The Winery specialises in Rhone varietals such as Marsanne, Roussanne, Viognier, Shiraz, Mourvedre and Grenache as well as its renowned Riesling. Relaxed and informative tastings can be enjoyed with matched Cheese and Wine plates. The Cellar Door is open from 10 am to 5pm daily.

45

YOUR INVITATION Visit the Cellar Door at Plunkett Fowles and taste some of Victorias most highly awarded cool climate wines. The Strathbogie Ranges is fast becoming synonymous with premium, long living Riesling and Shiraz. Plunkett Fowles “the Rule” Shiraz is recognised as the regions’s most continuously awarded wine, and the 2008 Ladies Who Shoot Their Lunch Shiraz recently won Best Australian Shiraz, at the 2011 Great Australian Shiraz Challenge.

PLUNKETT FOWLES CELLAR DOOR Fine wine and great food go hand in hand and Adele and Ian have worked together to match Plunkett Fowles wines to real food. In addition to what is grown in their organic veggie patch and the bread and other goodies baked in house, they source the best local produce for their antipasti, charcuterie and main plates. The courtyard offers secluded alfresco dining and a safe children’s playground. Open 9am-5pm daily.

MITCHELTON RESTAURANT Be sure to “feast among the vines” at the famous Mitchelton Restaurant. They offer an exquisite a la carte menu with modern Australian cuisine and can make up picnic platters for riverside dining. Open for lunch from Noon to 2.30pm, 7 days per week in summer and Wednesday to Sunday from April - November. Reservations are recommended by calling 03 57362225 and functions are a specialty.

Tahbilk Wetlands & Wildlife Reserve

LONGLEAT WINES

TAHBILK WETLANDS & WILDLIFE RESERVE

Located on the west bank of the Goulburn River, this picturesque vineyard, established in 1975 is owned and operated by Guido and Sandra Vazzoler. Guido has many years experience making wine for large and smaller boutique producers. His family is devoted to producing quality wines on the Piave River in Northern Italy – the tradition proudly continues due to the ideal grape growing conditions at Longleat.

If you have a passion for the outdoors the tranquil surrounds of the Tahbilk Wetlands & Wildlife Reserve is not to be missed. Take a stroll along more than 4kms of dedicated pathways and boardwalks in the Reserve. Or sit back and enjoy the wetlands with a guided commentary from your Captain on the Wetlands boat cruise with the option to hop off and explore or stay on board and enjoy the ride.

Their cheese is hand made by Sandra, a qualified cheese maker, and is served and sold at the cellar door café which is nestled amongst the vines, providing a tranquil setting for wine and cheese tasting. Taste the wine with the winemaker and the cheese with the cheese maker - a truly unique experience.

Walk: Open weekdays 11am - 4pm, weekends & public holidays 10.30am - 4.30pm. Free admission. Children under 18 must be accompanied by an adult.

This old fashioned pub with modern ideas also offers accommodation and real country meals are served daily. Be sure to try their famous Rabbit Pie, which is the hero of the district.
