A VIBRANT history

You’ll feel a special sense of nostalgia the moment you arrive in Stillwater. Once full of steamboats and home to lumber barons, today Stillwater’s rich and vibrant history is celebrated year-round with thousands of visitors from all over the world. Whether you’re enjoying our charming Main Street shops and restaurants, or taking a self-guided walking tour, you’ll experience a perfect pairing of historic beauty and modern style, plus friendly locals that make a stay in Stillwater truly unique.

THE AMAZING river

Stillwater’s location on the St. Croix River is one of the reasons it’s been named among the most picturesque towns in the Midwest. There are many ways to enjoy the river, whether from your car, walking along the riverfront, dining al fresco or staying at an inn or vacation rental with a water view. The river bluffs provide hikers and bikers with great vantage points to see the river and town. Or you can get out on the water on your own boat or rented watercraft, book a lunch or dinner cruise on an authentic paddleboat, or even take a romantic gondola ride.

SO MANY WAYS TO HAVE fun

As you explore options for things to do, you’ll see why Stillwater is continuously voted a favorite getaway in Minnesota — and nationwide! With so much to offer every type of visitor in all four seasons, you’ll find the perfect itinerary to suit your idea of fun and relaxation. Be sure to stay a little longer as there is more to see and do than you’d think, and the Stillwater area provides an unmatched variety of places to stay for every size of group and every price point.

Shopping District Main Street

Take your time browsing along Stillwater's Historic Main Street and its charming side streets. You'll find more than 50 locally owned and operated boutiques, specialty shops and art galleries. And, Stillwater has more antiques

shops than any other destination in the 5-state area! As part of the National Historic Registry, you’ll delight in the architecture and diversity of our unique shops.

of StillwaterThe Story

In 1837, a treaty between the U.S., Ojibwe and Dakota tribes led to the cession of land in present-day Wisconsin, laying the foundation for Stillwater’s establishment. The town swiftly evolved into a bustling hub for fur trading and milling. Wisconsin’s statehood in 1848 created uncertainty for Stillwater, prompting a convention that resulted in the creation of Minnesota as a territory, officially making Stillwater the birthplace of Minnesota. The city thrived on lumber in the 19th century, with steam mills and wood industries fueling economic growth. Stillwater’s golden age in the late 1800s

saw cultural and architectural advancements, but its decline came with the eventual depletion of lumber resources by 1900. Post-World War II, a revitalization effort transformed Stillwater into a tourist destination, emphasizing its historic charm. Today, Stillwater stands as a vibrant community with diverse industries and businesses, a testament to its enduring legacy. Post-World War II Stillwater was the epitome of small town Americana, with thriving local industries and a vibrant downtown area. Beginning in the 1970s, Stillwater's historic charm led to it becoming a tourism destination featuring its history with that small town feeling. Whether you're indulging in delicious cuisine, exploring unique shops, or discovering artistic treasures, Stillwater provides the ultimate Midwestern getaway.

1 Lowell Park ..............................

201 Water St. N.

In 1909, with funding from Elmore Lowell, Stillwater enhanced its riverfront by hiring landscape architects to design a new park on the levee, with later expansion and the construction of a pavilion in 1923.

2 Lift Bridge ............................

481 Chestnut St. E.

The lift bridge, completed in 1931, is one of only three such vertical-lift highway bridges built in Minnesota and Wisconsin before World War II, featuring steel cables and towers for raising and lowering the span.

3 Freight House

233 Water St. S.

For decades, Stillwater’s commerce revolved around railroads – with the Chicago, Milwaukee, and St. Paul Railroad depot serving as a crucial hub, they handled up to 70 rail cars daily until the agency closed in 1970.

4 Commander Mill ........................

413 Nelson St. E.

Originally built in 1898 at the corner of Main and Nelson Streets, the Commander Elevator was acquired by the Commander Company in 1919 and by G.T.A. in 1961 and is a prominent fixture in Stillwater’s skyline.

5 Historic Caves ............................

402 Main St. S.

Joseph Wolf opened Minnesota’s first steam-powered brewery in 1873. After flourishing for two decades, it succumbed to Prohibition in 1919 and transitioned to a soda and sparkling water production before shutting down in 1925.

6 Washington County Courthouse .............

101 Pine St. W.

Designed by Augustus Knight in the Italianate style in 1870, the oldest courthouse in Minnesota was originally built to reflect the county’s booming lumber industry and now serves as a venue for community and private events.

7 Former National Guard Armory .........

107 Chestnut St. E.

After World War I, well-known Minneapolis architect Oscar Lang designed a new hall to be used not just for military training, but also for public events, sports, and concerts. Built in 1922. Currently used as private residence.

8 Brunswick House ...................... 114 Chestnut St. E. Built by William Penny in 1848 (the same year Stillwater was founded) and later owned by Julius Brunswick, this house had historical significance as it hosted the first Minnesota Independent Order of Odd Fellows meeting in 1849.

9 Post Office ................................ 220 Myrtle St.
