SFI Industry RD&I Fellowship Programme 2024

has

been launched in collaboration with Enterprise Ireland & IDA Ireland

The programme provides grants for academic researchers wishing to spend time in industry to support industry-informed research and the exchange of knowledge and expertise between academia and industry.

This year, a new applicant category (Category C) has been introduced to allow PhD students (in final 6 months of their studies) from eligible Irish Research Bodies to apply.

The SFI Industry RD&I Fellowship LinkedIn Group allows academic researchers and prospective industry partners to network and identify opportunities to apply. Handbook for companies interested in partnering in the programme is available here

SFI Fellowship Programme

This programme aims to provide postdoctoral researchers with the opportunity to develop their career through experiencing first-hand, the diversity of activities carried out by a funding agency, through a placement within SFI.

Science Foundation Ireland is keen to be part of a framework that can enable researchers to seek and secure diverse career opportunities in areas such as industry, research funding and administration, public administration and Government affairs. For those individuals interested in these types of careers, the Fellowship Programme will provide an opportunity to develop key skills which may assist them in securing these types of roles.

The Fellowship programme will make awards to suitable candidates who wish to gain experience in a number of areas across SFI. These awards are for a period of up to 2 years and afford a great opportunity to the holder to gain some experience of working in a research funding organisation. In addition to the experience gained through the Programme there is also a comprehensive training plan for all Fellows and opportunities to work with a mentor.

Applied Partnership Awards (APA) 2024

Designed to bring knowledge users and researchers together to develop research projects that address a specific need within the Irish health or social care system, the research findings will have a direct impact on decision-making in the knowledge user organisation.

The awards are open to all areas of health. In this round, specifically welcomed are applications in the area of mental health, to support work related to Sharing the Vision –A Mental Health Policy for Everyone. These projects should use health services and population health research methods and approaches to support the implementation of the recommendations and associated actions in the Sharing the Vision Implementation Plan 2022-2024. A dedicated budget for mental health research has been provided by the Department of Health for this purpose As such, quality permitting, additional awards in the area of mental health will be funded through this call.

Breast Cancer Now Project Grants and PhD Studentships

Submission Deadline: 30th April 2024

Breast Cancer Now supports research activities across the themes of:

• Improving treatments, care, & services for those affected by secondary breast cancer.

• Improving support for physical and mental health, and emotional wellbeing of people affected by breast cancer.

• Developing kinder, smarter treatments for people with breast cancer and improving access to treatments for those affected.

• Improving detection and diagnosis of breast cancer.

• Furthering our understanding of why breast cancer occurs and spreads and using our knowledge to help prevent breast cancer developing.

Project Grants will cover staff salary, research expenses, essential equipment, and conference costs up to £400,000 for 3 - 4 years Funding of more than £400,000 / longer than 4 years will be considered, but the applicant will need to contact the research team as soon as possible prior to applying for funding higher than this amount / longer than this time frame.

PhD Studentships are for 3 or 4 year studentships that can cover stipend, student fees, research expenses, conference fees, and essential equipment. The maximum award is £170,000 Applicants are only able to submit one application as primary applicant to either the project grant or PhD studentship.

Irish Cancer Society Clinician Research Development Fellowship 2024

The Irish Cancer Society invites eligible Non-Consultant Hospital Doctors (NCHD’s) training in any Oncology related disciplines, to submit an application to this call. The purpose of this award is to provide the opportunity for NCHD’s to develop Cancer Research experience. This is intended to be a transformative investment for a Clinician who has already demonstrated that they are passionate about undertaking active, patientfocused cancer research, but needs the extra support to enable them to accelerate their trajectory to leading and directing research based in Ireland. This award can provide funding for a variety of research activities, e.g. salary, running costs associated with a specific research project(s), training and dissemination costs, PPI costs, M.D. or Ph.D. fees etc.

Joint Transnational Call

‘Identification or Validation of Targets for Personalised Medicine Approaches (PMTargets)’

Personalised Medicine (PM) represents a paradigm shift from a “one size fits all” approach to an optimised strategy for prevention, diagnosis and treatment of disease for everyone, based on their unique characteristics, including biological features (e.g. phenotype, endotype, genotype), as well as lifestyle and environmental factors. PM puts the patient at the centre of healthcare, aiming for optimised health promotion, treatments and management of disease or predisposition to disease. Today, PM has been advancing rapidly and the range of technologies, methodologies and information utilised is much broader, supporting improved healthcare, diagnostics and tailormade treatments, including rehabilitation, and prevention strategies

North-West Europe Call 4

This call covers all nine specific objectives addressed by the Programme and follows a two-step process. In Step 1 applicants will focus on the project need and justification, its objective, the added value of the proposed approach and the relevance of the partnership. All projects which successfully pass Step 1 will be invited to submit a more detailed application, including a complete work plan and budget.

Over the lifetime of the Programme, €287 million of ERDF (European Regional Development Fund) will be allocated to projects.

European Research Council (ERC) Advanced Grant Scheme 2024

Are you an established, leading Principal Investigator who wants long-term funding to pursue a ground-breaking, ambitious project, then the ERC Advanced Grant could be for you.

Applicants for the ERC Advanced Grants (Principal Investigators (PI)) are expected to be active researchers who have a track-record of significant research achievements in the last 10 years and should be exceptional leaders in terms of originality and significance of their research contributions.

No specific eligibility criteria with respect to the academic requirements are foreseen.

Awarded to early career researchers of any nationality, with a track record showing great promise and 2 – 7 years since completion of PhD, this funding is provided for up to 5 years and it worth up to €1 5M per Starting Grant Candidates should have already produced excellent supervised work, be ready to work independently and have an excellent research proposal

Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions Postdoctoral Fellowships

These fellowships enhance the creative and innovative potential of researchers holding a PhD and who wish to acquire new skills through advanced training, international, interdisciplinary and inter-sectoral mobility and are open to excellent researchers of any nationality

The scheme encourages researchers to work on research and innovation projects in the non-academic sector and is open to researchers wishing to reintegrate in Europe, to those who are displaced by conflict, as well as to researchers with high potential who are seeking to restart their careers in research

Fellowships will be provided to excellent researchers, undertaking international mobility either to or between EU Member States or Horizon Europe Associated Countries, as well as to non-associated Third Countries Applications will be made jointly by the researcher and a beneficiary in the academic or non-academic sector.

Respiratory Pathogens - A large number of pathogens target the human respiratory tract, resulting in a broad spectrum of clinical manifestations including life-threatening acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). While serious respiratory infections are predominantly caused by RNA viruses, other types of pathogens can be involved. The modes of transmission of respiratory pathogens often give them a significant epidemic potential The ISIDORe consortium supports scientists with an interest in these respiratory pathogens.

Vector-Borne Pathogens and their Vectors - The geographic and host ranges of vector-borne diseases are expanding, mostly due to anthropogenic factors. With rising temperatures and changing weather patterns, the risk of these diseases affecting increasingly large areas of the world will continue to rise, as reflected by the record number cases of dengue (including non-imported ones) and West Nile virus observed in Europe in 2022. The ISIDORe consortium supports scientists with an interest in the causative agents and vectors of these fast-spreading diseases

Other Pathogens with Epidemic Potential - Will the next global infectious threat be an orthopoxvirus, or an enterovirus? Will it be even caused by a known pathogen? Can we be ready for the next pathogen X? The ISIDORe consortium supports scientists with an interest in epidemicprone pathogens, including pathogen X.

Passport to Open Research - Sprint Project

Open research, science or scholarship is the new normal and quickly becoming embedded as standard practice across the global research landscape. In support of this, the French and Dutch research communities recently produced accessible guides to Open Research principles, practices and resources targeted at early career stage researchers.

The 2024 CONUL Research Group is organising a series of sprints (online and in-person) to adapt these examples of best practice to develop a similar Irish Passport to Open Research, tailored to the specific needs of Ireland’s research community and context A sprint is a set period during which specific tasks or work must be completed. Sprinters do not have to attend all sessions or commit to contributions beyond the end of the sprint Once completed, the guide will be published open access under a CC BY SA license and will be a valuable resource for any organisation undertaking or supporting research and an essential primer for those taking their first steps into research.

Draft Research Data Management Policy Consultation

UCC’s current Research Data Management Policy is being revised to reflect changes to its research data services model and broader sectoral advances around data management and open data. UCC Library, IT Services, and UCC Research are overseeing this process.

A draft policy has been prepared and the team are seeking feedback The policy will impact PIs, individual researchers, PhD students, and anyone with a role in research processes. The team are eager for input from as many stakeholders as possible to strengthen the policy and ensure that it supports the research mission of UCC and its UCC researchers delivery on their research ambitions in compliance with relevant professional, ethical, and statutory standards.
