LETTER FROM THE
PUBLISHER
WOW...
with two years and four magazines under our belt, we are now stepping up our game and publishing this AWESOME magazine quarterly in 2019! During that time, we have had many, many adventures and learned many, many, lessons…because that is life… right? Without going into detail, I can honestly say this has been a wild ride, and there have been many days that I have felt like throwing in the towel…to just go get a “real” job…but the one thing that keeps this dream alive is my community. At times I feel like I am on this road alone, then other times I’m surrounded by beautiful people and amazing places…or is it amazing people and beautiful places? Either way, it’s awe-inspiring and heartfelt in so many ways: from the trails I get to hike and bike with my daughter, to the river trips we share with friends, to the love and support I get from the amazing people (especially the Women in Tourism) in the Utah Tourism and Outdoor Recreation Industry. It’s called a passion project for a reason, and having a passion for Utah, and adventure seems like no-brainer in my world. OK, enough about that. Let’s move on to this issue in your hand. For starters, I want to give a big shout out to fellow adventure mom-entrepreneur, Arika Bauer, aka ZionAdventurePhotog, who shares her expert advice for exploring the St. George/Zion area during the winter months on page 28. We have pulled The Salt Project into the mix as well, and they give us a Top 10 List of winter-friendly indoor educational centers from around the state on page 40.
Have you heard of the Adventure Mamas Initiative? Check out the full story on Page 36 in the Healthy Moms section. And last but not least, no winter issue would be complete without an article on How to Find the BEST Ski Deals (page 14), because if you haven’t heard, we DO have The Greatest Snow on Earth®…and Ski Utah, the local organization that gets more kids on the slopes annually with their school programs and their 5th/6th grade passports. If you have an adventure to share or a story to tell, please reach out and be a part of our wonderful community of contributors. As a single mom-entrepreneur, collaboration and community are the best way to keep the adventure rolling!! Now get out there…and enjoy the snow, the adventure, and the time with your kids!

road triPPin’ celebrate the new year BY MONIQUE BEELEY
10 DISCOVER UTAH KIDS
THE NEW YEAR IS ALWAYS A TIME OF REFLECTION, LOOKING BACK OVER THE LAST 365 DAYS – THE GOOD, THE BAD AND THE UGLY – it's a time of joyous anticipation of what’s to come in the new year. In my early adulthood, New Year’s Eve was always a time to get dressed up, go out and just have a ton of fun, ringing in the new year with the glass or two of champagne, donned in some silly party hat with glitter, sparkles, and feathers (you know the kind). The evening usually ended in the wee hours of the morning making the next day…New Year’s Day…a lost cause. Let’s just say thoughts of inspiration and goal setting were not completely coming through my foggy sleep-deprived brain. Flash forward a few years…yes just a few...to current-day motherhood, a place my twentysomething-self imagined, but had no real concept of this awesome reality. With age comes a better understanding of oneself, as well as the knowledge of those things we truly value. Experiences with family and close friends far outweigh the party scene. This past year I wanted to go someplace new to celebrate the new year with my daughter Kya, so I started brainstorming places nearby that I hadn’t been to, and that would be enjoyable for both of us. One place that had been on my Utah bucket list for a long time was the Spiral Jetty, located on the northeastern shore of the Great Salt Lake. We could combine this road trip with swimming and water slides in the hot waters of Crystal Hot Springs, which would be a win/win for both of us. Kya really wanted to bring a travel companion with us, which is a common request being an only child, so we called her cousins (ages 8, 13, and 17) and they were excited to join us on this adventure. The Spiral Jetty, created in 1970 by American sculptor Robert Smithson, is an earthwork sculpture made of 6,000 tons of basalt rock. This uniquely-awesome art piece is a massive 1,500 feet long and 15 feet wide forming a counterclockwise coil jetting off the shore. Not long after it was created, the masterpiece was fully submerged by the rising waters of the Great Salt Lake, only to show its beauty a few times when water levels dipped over the next three decades, fully reemerged again in 1999. Since then the Jetty has attracted hundreds of thousands of visitors from around the world, and in March of 2017, Governor Gary Herbert signed a bill designating it as Utah’s Official State Work of Art. In 1999 the Spiral Jetty was donated to Dia Art Foundation. The Utah Museum of Fine Arts works in collaboration with Dia Art Foundation and Great Salt Lake Institute at Westminster College now preserve, maintain, and advocate for this masterpiece of late

twentieth-century art and acclaimed Utah landmark. Dia leases the lake bed where Spiral Jetty is located from the State of Utah Division of Forestry, Fire and State Lands. Our morning started off a bit chilly and overcast, but I was very excited to be exploring this awesome new place. We pulled into the small parking lot just before 8 am and there were already a couple cars; I guess we weren’t the only ones looking for an amazing place to start off the new year! We spent a couple of hours exploring the Jetty and the natural wonders of the Great Salt Lake. As a photographer, the reflections the lake provides are always illuminating to me. The overcast morning soon shifted, allowing the sun and blue sky to appear, creating a surreal backdrop. The cold hindered the usual water and sand play for the kids, which curtailed our exploration time, but the joy of the day was spending time together and making sure we all had a memorable first day. We headed on to the next stop, Crystal Hot Springs, which for kids who absolutely love to swim was by far the focal point of their day. The drive was about an hour away which gave the kids time to take a little snooze before hitting the pool. The water temperature at Crystal Hot Springs ranges between 120 – 134°F and contains the highest mineral content (46,000mg/L) found in any hot springs in the world, which was the perfect reprieve after the morning’s chilly adventure. I enjoyed just soaking and relaxing in the mineral-dense waters while the kids made laps on the two hydro-tube water slides. There are three mineral hot tubs, a large soaker pool, an Olympic-size pool, and a kid’s pool with a waterfall that the kids can explore behind. On the drive home I asked the crew what their favorite part of the day was, and it was no surprise that they all absolutely LOVED swimming, but what was surprising and heart-warming was that they also LOVED exploring the Spiral Jetty as well, and unanimously requested that we all go back together another time when it’s just a bit warmer. It is not always easy finding symmetry with your kids, and, at times, it feels so much easier to just stay home than to pack up everything needed for an adventure in the hope that everyone will equally enjoy the experience. But with some good planning to combine a unique, beautiful place with consideration for activities the whole family will enjoy, you can’t go wrong. BoxElder.org Crystalhotsprings.net

We encourage you to make it a priority this winter to get outside and spend time with your kids at one of our world-class resorts. Here are some helpful tips to get more mountain time with your family this winter.

Who said skiing was expensive? Okay…we admit that skiing can get a bit pricey sometimes, but it doesn’t have to be. Utah’s ski industry is rolling out the deals and making skiing for the family more affordable than ever, and a bit of savvy planning can stretch your skiing buck a long way this winter. Whether it’s affordable vacation packages, season pass deals, or deeply-discounted introductory and learn-to-ski programs, Utah’s ski areas have got you covered!
KIDS SKI FREE PROGRAMS The best deal for kids is at Brighton, where kids 10 and under ski free! At Eagle Point, Powder Mountain, Snowbasin, Snowbird, and Solitude, kids six and under ski free, and at Brian Head, Cherry Peak, and Sundance, it’s five and under. Park City Mountain offers the Epic SchoolKids Utah pass which provides 5 FREE day passes for all Utah Kindergarten through 5th graders. NIGHT SKIING Night skiing is an affordable option with lift ticket prices usually about 30-50% less than day passes. Brian Head, Brighton, Cherry Peek, Nordic Valley, Powder Mountain, Snowbird, and Sundance all offer night skiing. GEAR There are many options for gear that won’t break the bank. Utah Ski Gear is a small, locally-owned shop in Sandy that takes pride in offering both great value and excellent customer service. Owners Travis Moise and Esther Stokes are ski parents themselves, and they are happy to give new ski families some personal guidance on what is going to work best for each family member. They take used gear, tune it up, and sell complete ski-packages starting at $89. This fall we went to check out

Now in its 20th year, the Passport program gives fifth and six graders around the world free access to 13 Utah resorts. Fifth graders get three days (39 days total) and sixth graders get one day (13 days total) of skiing or riding at each resort. Ski Utah’s Passport application and redemption process is all online, making it one of the only Passport programs in the country to go fully digital. Since its inception, the Passport program has seen more than 150,000 fifth and sixth graders continue to hone their skills on the slopes in Utah. SkiUtah.com

A
Visit a National Park Red rock sprinkled with white fluffy snow is a sight everyone needs to witness at least once. During the winter months, the hustle and bustle of the ever-popular Bryce Canyon National Park is replaced with a quieter scene that is even more breathtaking. In addition to the hiking options in the Park, there are also 30 km of groomed trails for Nordic skiing or snowshoeing. Ruby’s Inn is a great family basecamp. They offer Nordic rentals, have an onsite ice-skating pond, and of course, an indoor swimming pool. RubysInn.com

Visit a National Monument
F
Did you know Utah is home to 8 National Monuments? One of our favorites to visit in the winter is Cedar Breaks National Monument. Located just three miles south of the Brian Head Resort, this bucket list destination sits at over 10,000 feet in elevation. The pristine groomed trails for Nordic skiing and snowshoeing offer breath-taking red rock vistas of this awesome national monument. nps.gov/cebr
Wagon Ride Through Elk Herds
G
Hardware Ranch Wildlife Management Area is located in Blacksmith Fork Canyon, about 15 miles east of Hyrum. Annually the area sees about 500-600 wild elk, who have been coming to this area to feed during winters since 1945. Open to the public Friday-Monday for wagon rides and elk viewing. wildlife.utah.gov/hardwareranch
Take Time for Yourself! As parents we sometimes forget and neglect to take time for selfcare. It is so important that we make it a priority to fill up our tank so that we can take care of our family. If our tank is always running on empty, it’s impossible for us to give what we don’t have. Make a commitment in 2019 to schedule time for yourself, whether it’s just an hour for a walk, a day retreat, or a long weekend getaway. An investment in yourself will be one that you definitely won’t regret.
H Camp in a Yurt Whether it’s your first winter yurtin’ experience or you’re a seasoned yurter, there are many options. Four of the 44 Utah State Parks offer year-round yurt camping: Northern Utah options are East Canyon and Rockport, and in Southern Utah yurts are found at Goblin Valley and Dead Horse Point. For the more adventurous yurter, head to the Uintah National Forest. stateparks.utah.gov
Explore Bear Lake
I
Bear Lake is the family hot-spot during the summer months…swimming, boating, paddling, fishing, and of course enjoying a famous raspberry shake, but have you thought about exploring Bear Lake in the winter? This locale turns from a town hopping with action to a quaint picturesque winter wonderland. You can enjoy snowshoeing, x-county skiing, sledding, and snowmobiling. And for those thrill seekers, you can jump into the Bear Lake at the Monster Plunge happening during the annual Winterfest, January 25th and 26th. The local outfitter is Epic Recreation, who can provide everything from snowmobile and snowshoe rentals to family tubing tours and vacation rentals. BearLake.org EpicRecreation.net

Skiing at Sundance BY JOSIE KELLY – TEEN CONTRIBUTOR
24 DISCOVER UTAH KIDS
I’VE BEEN SKIING AT SUNDANCE SINCE I WAS A LITTLE BABY, SO I KNOW ALMOST EVERY RUN THERE. People used to say, “There’s a baby skiing in diapers.” Today, we’re going to explore Sundance through an article! A great way to learn the mountain is to take a lesson. Once you’ve paid and gotten in, walk on up to The Yurt! You’re probably wondering, “What on earth is a Yurt?” A Yurt is a Mongolian tent. Once you’re in the Yurt, you’ll find one of our wonderful Yurt Moms! A Yurt Mom is a kind lady, sort of like a mom, who will help you with whatever you need. She will get you hot chocolate, Gummy Bears, Goldfish, warm your toes and fingers up, and if you bring “Magic Snow” and place it by the fire, you’ll get a special surprise! The Yurt Moms are there for you. Once you’ve put your stuff in a cubby, you can start your adventure…but don’t forget your hand warmers on cold days. There are lots of great Sundance Snowsports instructors; you can laugh with Haley, do fun voices with Jon, and have great adventures with Caleb, AKA K-Bear. One of my favorite green runs is the Outlaw Trail. You can get to this run by getting off at “first stop” on Ray’s lift. I like this run because it’s like a ride back into the past. I like to pretend I’m the outlaw woman named Josie Bassett and run through Butch’s and Ann’s cabins, slide through Red Creek Rapids, and escape through Holein-the-Wall. Next, I like to head over to Jake’s lift. There, I hit my favorite blue run called Maverick and “drop in” to the terrain park. I like soaring through the blue-bird skies off the jumps and sliding in on the boxes beneath Mount Timpanogos. For more challenging runs, I head to Red’s lift. Before you do anything, make sure you take in the view. It’s mind-blowing! To get to my favorite black diamond run, I tuck into a torpedo and launch onto the cat track to Hills. There lies the one-and-only Jungle Rollercoaster, actually known as the trees on Hills. I like this run because when going up and down the moguls, it’s like a rollercoaster through the trees. When the conditions are right, we lap Bishop’s Bowl until our legs are jello. After a fabulous day of skiing all our favorite runs, we get a steaming hot chocolate at Creekside, a blue raspberry sucker at the Deli, and if I’m lucky I get to eat delicious tacos at the Taco Truck…Oh so good, uh-huh.

A SOUTHERN UTAH FAMILY ESCAPE The retreat will revisit foundational practices of yoga with our uniquely experienced instructors, including Vinyasa, Gentle, meditation, and breath awareness GROWING UP IN HURRICANE UTAH, JUST 20 MINUTES FROM SAINT GEORGE, I have fond memories of jumping out of bed, running barefoot to the window and peeking out in wonder at the blanket of snow covering my backyard; but that was a very rare occurrence. The majority of my winter days were spent running around outside rarely ever needing a coat. It wasn't until I moved to Logan, Utah for school and later Salt Lake City for 10 years that I came to understand what winter was all about. I must confess that even though I do love the snow, my love for snow is tainted a bit by the fact that I do not like the cold. I am a Southern Utah native after all.

During my winters living in Northern Utah I would find respite from the cold by making regular trips back to my hometown in Southern Utah. Known for its mild winter temps and an unlimited supply of hiking and outdoor activities, Southern Utah is one of the best places out there to ditch the puffy coat and replace it with hiking boots and a backpack. I moved back to Southern Utah with my husband and 3 kiddos a little over three years ago and believe me when I say we take full advantage of the Southern Utah winters. Summers are hot and crowded with tourists, so when winter rolls around with cooler temps and the tourists find their way back home, we go out and play. I have put together a three-day itinerary perfect for any family itching to escape the cold with swirling red rock and desert adventures.
day one: Start your day by fueling your adventure with a Haven Waffle or BO-rrito at the Xetava Garden Cafe in Ivins, just 15 minutes northwest of Saint George. After breakfast drive 6 miles to Snow Canyon State Park. This stunning park is scattered with volcanic cones, sand dunes, lava flows, and soaring red sandstone cliffs.

Just 1/4 mile past the south entrance you will come to Jenny's Canyon trail to your right. This 0.3-mile round trip trail will take you to a towering slot canyon on your left and an overlook to your right. The slot canyon is ideal for exploring and kids can even do a bit of rock climbing on the canyon walls. After your short hike, head up the road a short distance to the Sand Dunes. This giant-sized sandbox is the perfect place to let the kids run, play and dig to their heart's content. Once the kids have had enough fun playing in the sand, drive north to the Petrified Dunes. The parking lot will be to your left and a short trail will take you to incredible rolling mounds of petrified Navajo Sandstone. At the heart of Snow Canyon, the views from the top of the once-flowing mountains of sand are some of the most breathtaking in the park. Don't worry about following a trail, just climb, explore and enjoy the beauty until everyone is ready to head back to the car. Later in the afternoon, head over to Yant Flat. This mostly flat trail starts with soft sand along the lower forest at the base of Pine Valley Mountain. The easy 1.5-mile round trip hike will take you to open terrain of swirling smooth rock formations that spill out for miles. The landscape can be steep at times, and there are cliffs to be aware of, but the sticky rock will allow kids to adventure across much of the area.

JENNY'S CANYON / SNOW CANYON STATE PARK
day two: Day two is an action-packed day full of adventure and is perfect for a family looking to push outside their comfort zone. Book a half day morning family canyoneering package with one of the local guide companies in Springdale. Red Desert Adventures is one that I highly recommend. The location of your canyoneering adventure will be selected with regards to starting location, season, and conditions. Age 4/5 is usually the youngest family member they will take. After an adventurous morning repelling beautiful slot canyons, head over to River Rock Roasting Co. The pizza, sandwiches, and salads are all excellent and the views from the patio can't be beat. Make sure to take an Aunt Betty's cinnamon roll for the road. After lunch, make your way 25 miles east to the Water Canyon trail. This hidden gem of a hike just outside of Hildale has a shallow year-round creek and a stunning waterfall reward at the end. At 3.5-miles round trip, the trail can be a little more advanced due to the moderate elevation gain and tricky rock scrambling.

RIVERSIDE WALK / ZION NP
Highlights: Red Desert Adventures; Canyoneering Company River Rock Roasting Co.; Restaurant Emerald Pools Trail; kid-friendly waterfall hikes kids and features one of the few waterfalls on display in the park. Hike 0.7 miles to the Lower Emerald Pools. Instead of heading up to the Middle Emerald Pools follow the Kayenta trail. This 0.8-mile trail will take you to The Grotto shuttle stop. You can then follow a beautiful path along the river to get back to The Lodge.
day three: Start your day by visiting the Zion National Park Visitor Center to get a Junior Ranger Handbook for the kids to work on throughout the day. If the shuttles are running, jump on and ride it to the last stop – Temple of Sinawava – where you will hike the Riverside Walk trail. If the shuttles aren't running, make sure to get an extra early start so that you will find parking. Parking is very limited in the canyon. The 2.5-mile round trip Riverside Walk trail is mostly level and paved, making it doable for all skill levels. Shear red rock mountains and hanging gardens line the path as you walk along the Virgin River. The end of this trail is the beginning of one of Zion's most popular hikes in the summer, The Narrows. Bring a picnic lunch to eat on the lawn in front of The Lodge. After lunch, walk across the road to the start of the Emerald Pools trail. This classic Zion hike is great for
After your day of hiking, make a stop at the Natural History Museum to watch a 20-minute film about the history of Zion. This film is a required activity in the Junior Ranger Handbook. Finish up the last of the Junior Ranger Handbook, then head back to the visitor center where your child will present their completed handbook to a park ranger and take an oath to protect and care for the National Parks. ADVENTURE MAMAS INITIATIVE: A MOVEMENT FOR MATERNAL WELLNESS Adventure Mamas Initiative (AMI) is a Utah-based nonprofit organization passionately advocating for maternal wellness. They are working to eradicate the guilt, shame, depression, and anxiety that disproportionately plagues women, especially mothers by building a space where women are encouraged to pursue personal wellness through access to community, education, and adventure. They recognize that healthy mamas foster healthy children, families, and communities while also promoting a healthy planet. SINCE LAUNCHING IN 2016, the Mamas have built 13 regionally-based community groups with over 5,000 members around North America. These groups are grassroots-led which means individual community members are encouraged to tap into their own leadership characteristics to bring people together. Events have included backcountry skiing, indoor rock climbing, adventure cycling, hikes with kiddos, and much more. The community also includes 23,000+ women around the world who access educational resources and motivation to get outside via their media platforms.
36 DISCOVER UTAH KIDS
The AMI social feeds are filled with women getting out and after it through pregnancy and beyond. They make it a point to emphasize that adventure is very much a subjective experience and expression that can vary from person to person, from year to year, even from day to day. In the past 18 months, the organization has also hosted 2 immersive, all-mama, backcountry expeditions to help women dial technical mountain skills. The first was a high altitude backpacking experience and the second was an intro to mountaineering and ice climbing. The women who participated joined from all over the United States.
There were single mamas, mamas who were still breastfeeding, mamas who had kids in college, mamas to kids with special needs, and more-- a beautiful demonstration that adventure is powerful and relevant all throughout the motherhood journey. This fall, they also organized the first-ever camping and adventure festival for families, the Dirtbag Family Bash. The Bash took place in Moab, UT and the adventure packed weekend included a slew of on-site presentations, clinics, crafts, games, gear demos, and more. Check out the 2018 event recap on page 36. AMI exists because they understand that spending time in nature and further, setting goals and pursuing challenge in nature, is cathartic and empowering. Adventure-based activities have many benefits such as growing an individual's self-efficacy, a belief in one’s ability to navigate and overcome challenge. It also fosters tangible skills and characteristics that can be applied in frontcountry-life including critical thinking, problem solving, conflict resolution, patience, goal setting, self-reliance, perseverance, and more. Science is showcasing that additional benefits to spending time outdoors may also include improved mood, memory, and concentration, expedited healing, decreased stress, and enhanced immunity. While AMI has experienced tremendous growth and success in their short history, the fact is, there’s still so much work to be done within the realm of maternal wellness advocacy. There are issues of privilege, access, and scale that urgently need to be addressed. But, AMI is here for the long-haul and they mean business. They’re working to empower more women than ever and want to tear down barriers that keep many from accessing the cathartic, great outdoors. Support this amazing organization and become a maternal wellness advocate by providing a financial contribution to their nonprofit, volunteering with their team, and sharing the work that they’re doing far and wide. If you would like to learn more about Adventure Mamas Initiative, head over to their website, adventuremamas.org. On the website, you can access their regionally-based Collab groups, find their social media links, peruse their blog, and check out their wellness and education resources.
