Tools & Ideas Best Shoe for Overall Comfort Asics Gel Kayano imply put, the Kayano is a titan. Over its 18 iterations the shoe has consistently performed well for many runners. This latest version earned higher scores than any other shoe in our test for comfort, cushioning, and stability. The shoe feels like a padded boxing glove that you can use to pound out mile after mile, pain-free. (Runners who’ve struggled with piriformis syndrome or chronic foot pain should enjoy the cushy, protected ride.) And testers raved about the fit—especially in the rearfoot, where a new external heel counter keeps a firm grip on your heel while wrapping your Achilles in cushy padding and soft fabric. Even with the addition, the Kayano is a half-ounce lighter than its previous version.

places in Christ, just as he chose us.” We find here the bridge between your current state and what you are actually made to be. That bridge is the phrase “in Christ.” Except you are in Christ, you cannot be all that God has ordained you to be. Your case is all a matter of discovery and appropriate positioning. You can be what God wants you to be; you do not have to fear. Your name too can be listed in the catalogue of achievers. The original purpose of a thing can only be found in the mind of its maker. Jesus said, “I must work the works of him who sent me…” (John 9:4). You too have been sent and so must work the works of Him who made you and sent you to this planet. You must go back to God and find out what the purpose for your creation is. Once you discover your purpose, it will give direction to your life and make it worth living. Towards the end of His life on earth, Jesus said to God, “I have glorified you on earth. I have finished the work you have given me to do” (John 17:4). He could say this with all confidence because He knew God’s purpose for him. You too can confidently say this when your life is done. You wonder how you can achieve this? You must surrender to His will! All the great achievers in the Bible had this one thing in common – they let His will be done in their lives.

the earth.” (Genesis 1:26) God’s purpose for you is to have and exercise dominion. Do you know that dominion never existed until you were made? You are God’s delegated authority. You have the power to rule over everything created, delegated to you–whether animals, circumstances, situations, things seen or unseen. As long as they are created, you have dominion over them. You may say at this point, “My situation does not look like that of one who has dominion.” The Apostle Paul said, “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in heavenly places in Christ, just as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world….” (Ephesians 1:3,4) Your dominion has been in existence before the foundations of the earth – that is, before the world began. You probably are wondering how you could have dominion before the world began, which you are yet to exercise now. The truth is this: the purpose has been in the heart of the maker long before the thing was made. It takes your discovering your God-ordained purpose to exercise your God-given dominion! You are well equipped for God’s purpose for you. When He calls, He enables. Our passage in Ephesians states: “… in heavenly

Special Interview

Special Interview

The most difficult choices are not those between what is wrong or right, but between what is good and what is better. —Mr Gamaliel Onosode Interview by Kunle Soriyan and Biodun Ogunjobi

G

amaliel Onosode, one of Nigeria’s most trusted names in the world of finance and business and by every measure, an elder statesman. Born on 22 May, 1933, Mr. G. O. Onosode has chaired several private and public sector businesses and initiatives. In this exclusive interview with DiscoveryMan Digest, Mr Gamaliel Onosode bears his mind on the principles and values that has endeared him to many hearts today.

As a devoted man to God, can you narrate some particular experiences that influenced your attachment to the Almighty? Let me say that I am a beneficiary of ancestral obedience. When I use the word ancestral, I refer to what the Bible says, “Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old, he will not depart from it”. (Prov. 22:6). My parents did not compel me to accept Jesus as my Lord and Saviour but they faithfully discharged their divinely ordained responsibility as parents and therefore brought me up in an environment where I didn’t have to search hard to be exposed to the word of God. My parents did all they were required to do as Christian parents. The very simple answer to your question is that the Spirit of God moved me to accept Jesus as my personal Saviour at a service in 1943 when I was barely ten years old. But I did not fully appreciate the implication or the demands of that profession until 1955 when, as an undergraduate during my long vacation at Baptist Girls High School, Agbor. The preacher who was leading the yearly retreat organized by the School gave an altar call for rededication to Christ. I was prompted by the Spirit to step out in response. So I like to mention that, along with my earlier acceptance of Jesus as Saviour in 1943, as the circumstances or experiences that influenced my devotion to God. It was

12

then I more fully appreciated the significance of Acts 2:36 which insists that Jesus is made both Lord and Christ by God. Since then I have become more aware that God has a prior claim on my life. As Paul discloses in Romans 7:21-24 I find myself doing, what I don’t want to do -meaning there is a continuing battle or warfare between my body and my spirit man. So I know that I have to be continually on my guard against the devil who is going about like a roaring lion seeking someone to destroy. By the grace of God, I can say that the Spirit has won more frequently than the devil. In this connection, the most difficult choices for me are not those between what is wrong and what is right but between what is good and what is better. In other words, I can fail to do what is infinitely better, without having done anything you can regard as “wrong” or morally reprehensible. I’m willing to pay a price for upholding that principle. That principle has cost me my job a couple of times. I actually resigned my job on two occasions and my resignation had nothing to do with my conditions of service. It didn’t have anything to do with what was morally right or wrong but the delicate choice between optimizing societal good and settling for something, patently in my view, sub-optimal. For example, in February, 1962, my

employers, Colonial Development Corporation, later known as Commonwealth Development Corporation, were so pleased with my performance that a new position was created in what is now called the Federal Mortgage Bank, its full technical name then being Nigeria Housing Development Society Limited (or Nigeria Building Society for short). Its business was exactly what building societies did in the UK then but with a very significant difference. I was appointed Assistant General Manager. The General Manager was an Englishman. When I got there in 1962, I discovered that the business of the company was limited to the deployment of its small equity capital and I felt that was very odd. At that time, Surulere was being newly developed. So I said, “Why don’t you open your doors and accept savings from the general public. That would

14

DiscoveryMan / April/May 2013

increase the funds available for financing mortgages, increase the housing stock available to the general public, enhance the size of the middle class who would be acquiring these housing units subject to the mortgages offered by the company and that would, in turn, strengthen the basis of democracy in the country.” My employers appeared not to be impressed with that vision and said “No, we hear you but let’s carry on doing what we’ve been doing.” So I said, “If that is the case, I quit.” So by end of June, I submitted my letter of resignation. During the three months notice I gave, my overall boss (the Chairman of the Company and West Africa Regional Controller of CDC), called me almost fortnightly, trying to persuade me to withdraw my letter of resignation. At our last meeting, I still insisted on letting my resignation stand. He then said to me, ‘Gamaliel, you are making a great mistake. If you are not happy at the Nigeria Building Society, I can bring you back to the CDC Regional Office, where the whole of CDC business in West Africa is managed and from where you were seconded”. That really put me on the spot. Somehow, God just gave me the inspiration, and I said, “Thank you very much but do you envisage the time when I would occupy that chair”, pointing to his seat. Of course, he blushed and when he regained his equilibrium, he said, “Why not.” But I can tell you that no black man ever occupied that seat before CDC eventually wind up its operations in Nigeria. When I got back to my office at the Building Society, I wrote him a letter, thanking him for his concern but, regretting that I didn’t feel compelled to withdraw my letter of resignation, and that without meaning any disrespect to him, was obliged to let my resignation stand. You can sense from that story, that there was no choice between right or wrong. I was not fighting for my pocket, or against a threatened breach of the law by anyone. It was a simple choice between being content with sub-optimal utilization of God’s investment in me

and its more optimum utilization of that investment for the benefit of society. You are one of the few Nigerians that had an illustrious career. What is the impact of your Christian faith on your various designations? When I was Chairman and Chief Executive of a Bank, which still exists today, the staff used to have their annual Christmas party here in the balcony of this house where I have lived for 44 years, without my charging the company for using my property. Throughout my working years, apart from the first four months following my return by sea from the UK in early March, 1959, when I lived in my employer’s flat in Glover Road Ikoyi, I have always lived in my own house. I lived at 113, Ogunlana Drive, Surulere for ten years from 1959 to1969. And we have been living here at 44 Adelabu Street since 1969. We did move in 1978 to a house we built in Victoria Island, stayed there for four years and returned to this place which I had retained as my office during those four years. The Victoria Island property was eventually sold not long after. For sixty days until December 30, 1983 we lived in Bourdillon Road, Ikoyi, when I was Presidential Adviser on Budget Affairs and Director of Budget to President Shehu Shagari during his second term I had wanted to continue living at Adelabu Street but I was told that it would not be convenient for the Establishment for me to stay here. I was asked to move to Bourdillon Road which I used my own resources to renovate, modestly beautify with a garden. Some people asked me then why I was doing that when it’s not my own property but I answered that I was doing it for my own pleasure. Even if I were to leave the next day, the person who would move in would bless me for leaving the house nice and clean. When I accepted President Shagari’s invitation to serve, it was understood that we would work together for four years from October 16, 1983, but, regrettably, on the night of December 30, 1983, the military struck yet again, I found myself jobless, once again, after a mere 75 days! The point is this. My early experience in 1962 and 1964/65 confirms the wisdom of my always preferring to live in my own house, no matter how humble or where it is located. Many people compromise unacceptably because they are afraid of the immediate consequence of standing firm on what they know to be right or best. So on those occasions when I resigned my job, if I didn’t tell my wife or children, they wouldn’t know that anything had happened. The following day was like any other day; we carried on with our lives. It enables you more easily to put your confidence in God, who said, “I will never fail you nor forsake you.” (Heb.13:5) and rest on the assurance “And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus.” You can’t tempt God with evil. He won’t supply your needs

by allowing, let alone prompting, you to do evil. He will never grant permission for you to allow Satan to prompt you to evil. Mark this Scripture does not say, “He will supply all you ‘want’, but all you ‘need.’ Too often people confuse what they want with what they need. I have narrated these stories to show you that this lifestyle is an intrinsic part of the gift that I have received from the Lord. Choices and decisions make the difference in men. What top three advices would you give to men about decision making? For me, as a Christian, making choices is much easier than it would be for other people. My starting point is, and should be, whether I can conscientiously invite Jesus to join me in doing whatever it is. For example, I arrive at the office where births are registered, and I ask the man on duty there for a form to fill and he asks me “What have you brought for me for the baby?” I say, I am sorry I don’t get you and he says again, “What have you brought for me for the baby?” and I respond again, “Sorry, I don’t get you, sir?” Mind you, I understood all along what he was trying to say but I made him repeat it three times. Then I burst out laughing and said “Oh, this is very strange, from where I come, I am an Urhobo man, when a baby arrives, people come with gifts for the baby, how could you be asking me because I have a baby, to give you something?

‘…the most difficult choices for me are not those between what is wrong and what is right but between what is good and what is better. You should be giving me something for the baby!” He was overwhelmed. He gave me the form. The point is this, I can’t ask Jesus to join me in giving a bribe. So that is the starting point for me. But if you don’t have Him, godliness is not part of your make-up. Then you have a slightly more difficult choice. Then you may have to say, “If I gave this bribe of N10, will I be able to make N17, so that after deducting the N10 and paying the cost of what I am doing, there will still be something left for me?” I start my calculation with the question, “What will He (Jesus) have me do?” That is the first point. Secondly, God cannot be associated with disorderliness. As Almighty and Powerful as God is, he works with a plan. God could easily have stood up that first day of creation and said, “Let the world be the way I want it to be.” And, presto, it won’t take him more than one second? But He had a plan to do it in six days. At the end of each day He subjected His work to the discipline of review. At the end of the six days when He looked at everything, His verdict was, “It is very good”. So you must have a plan. Jesus himself said, “For which of you, desiring to build a tower, does not first sit down and count the cost, whether he has enough to complete it? Otherwise, when he has laid a foundation, and is not able to finish…” (LK14:28-29) he makes a laughing stock of himself. So you must have a plan and you must methodically follow that plan. Thirdly, if you have a plan, you must review your performance periodically in order to ensure that you are not falling behind or not jumping much ahead, so that it won’t create a problem for completion in a manner that will be satisfactory. That is why I love the Lord’s Prayer because I find that there is no genuine need of mine- either in terms of praise, supplication, thanksgiving or whatever, that is not covered by those simple words: “Our Father, who art in heaven” and not our Father whom I have locked up somewhere. “Give us this day our daily bread,” just bread for the coming day, not for the coming three days, not for the coming week, not for the coming months, let alone the coming years! So, why do you have to steal? Is it because you don’t want your children and grand-children to worry about what they are going to eat or drink or where they are going to stay?” Give us bread just for the

16

coming day.” “Forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us.” If you won’t forgive your neighbour, it means you have rejected the principle of forgiveness. On what basis can you ask God to forgive you when you have by implication rejected the principle of forgiveness? “For Thine is the Kingdom, the Power and the Glory.” What are you looking for more than kingdom, more than power or more than glory? They are all God’s. We want kingdom, we want power, we want glory, and we are looking and walking away from God! Very sad. So, that short prayer gives you enough basis for you to articulate specifics with regard to things, persons or institutions including the nation, the church, or any event. You can pause on the appropriate phrase or clause to pour out your thanksgiving or your expression of praise, or your supplication on behalf of yourself or someone else. It’s complete. What is one behaviour or trait that you have noticed over the seasons that derails the career of leaders, particularly in Nigeria? Jesus said “For the Son of man also came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many” (Mk10:45). The ideal leader is the person who sees the position he occupies as an opportunity to render service, to serve the community, the congregation, or the village or city or the country that put him in that position. What is driving you? If you are in a job? Are you driven by a desire to serve? The Scripture assures that, a servant will not lose his reward. It may not be material but the share joy, the satisfaction that you are blessing people and that your life is having a positive impact. There is this lady whom I had never met me before until we ran into each other at a hotel lobby in Abuja in December (I think) 1998 when I was a Presidential Aspirant. She walked up to me and told me that her father who too I had never met named his grandson, that is, her own son in my honour because apparently, by the grace of God, I had unwittingly made some favourable impressions on him. Praise be to the Lord. Those are some of the little things God does from time to time to encourage me, to encourage those who are seeking to do His will. Remember Elijah, he was crying one time, “God take my life… I am the only one left of your prophets who has not bowed down to Baal...” but God in effect said to him, “Shut up. Who told you, you are the only one who has not yet bowed down to Baal? There are still some 7000 others.” (I Ki 19) Because sometimes, I feel I have wasted my life, the Nigeria that I thought I was working hard to see emerge, is not the Nigeria I am seeing. So, sometimes, I think I have wasted my life. But God will say, “shutup. You are wrong!” It is like the vision that Daniel in the Bible had. After Gabriel had explained the vision to him, he said close it, shut it because it wasn’t for now but

for some time much later. But every ‘now’ is leading us nearer to the realization of our hope and to the end. Peter said, A thousand years is like one day and a day is like a thousand years. Who knows what God is going to do with that child? All the things I failed to do to advance the cause of Christ, that child may do. I happen to know, because I read the newspapers, that a number of children in the east now answer ‘Gamaliel,’ as though I invented the name. My father lifted it from the Bible where it occurs five times in the Old Testament and twice in the New Testament. As a statesman and an iconic businessman, what advice would you give the coming generation especially the youths? First, I will tell them not to let anyone despise their youth. At the press conference I just came from at Shepherdhill, I shared the story of how on a Sunday afternoon, some years back, one of my grand children, who was then barely three and half years old was somewhere in the sitting room with lots of other people of different age groups. Suddenly this girl’s voice rang out “Don’t touch the wall.” Obviously she had seen someone touching the wall. This girl, young as she was, was playing the leader; she was discharging leadership responsibility. Don’t you agree? She was not elected to lead; she was not appointed to lead. She was, however, passing on, sharing, a lesson she had imbibed. I think it was apostle Paul who admonished Timothy “Let no man despise thy youth.” Who said that a young person cannot teach an older man. Jesus was twelve years old when he held the Rabbis spellbound in the temple. So youths must not assume that because they are young, they cannot be the ones to set the good example for society. Young men and women should not entertain the wrong impression that every adult has something more positive to contribute to their life; maybe they do, but not necessarily for the young too have direct access to God. They can teach and straighten out the adult. The youth mustn’t allow the adult to squeeze them into their mould just because they are 20 years 40 years older or 60 years older. So, tell them, remind them that leadership is playing the positive exemplar at your own level wherever you are. Leadership is playing the positive role at your level in rendering service as distinct from seeking to be served. The security challenge the country is facing seems to be having new faces on a daily basis. What do you think is the panacea to the incessant unrest that is witnessed in different parts of Nigeria and how do you connect the impact to the future of this nation? There is no such thing as a panacea. It is a wholly theoretical solution to all problems. It does not exist and is a grossly misused word.

You see, one mistake that Nigerians too frequently make is that when a challenge or a problem presents itself, they think there is a single factor solution that you can throw at that challenge for it to disappear or to be resolved. In the real world, that is not true. There are very few problems that will disappear if you threw a single factor solution at them. We cannot be a greater leader than God himself. He requires us to exercise our freewill in favour of that which is excellent. We must pursue excellence as leaders and followers. Ideal leaders should be exemplary and good listeners. There is not a single factor that can explain what we now have in terms of terrorism and unrest. Even if we had a caring government that took care of everything: there is water, there is power, there are good roads there could still be terrorism if there was a perception that the leadership, for example, was helping itself unduly at the expense of generality of the people. Finally, I did talk of God’s timetable, that with Him a day is like a thousand years and a thousand years like one day. That means we must never give up even in our moments of deepest despair. We must refuse to give in to despair. You may have no idea whether that one additional effort you are going to make will be what God is going to use to accomplish his purpose and complete his plan or programmme. So don’t give up despair to the point of joining the multitude to do evil, even when the multitude is a figment of your imagination. Even if only one or two people in Nigeria are corrupt don’t join that one or two to do evil. In order words, even if ‘the multitude’ is a figment of your imagination and its only one person that is corrupt, don’t join that one person to be corrupt; be part of the solution to our problems on a continuing basis; don’t be happy to be part of the problem. Even if your contribution to the solution is minuscule, it is better to be part of the positive response to our challenges than to be part of the problem. God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

My Secret Battle By Kunle Osunkunle

T

he blaring horn of motorcycles and taxis could only be imagined and not heard in Alex’s office, in spite of the fact that it is situated in the very heart of commercial activity in Lagos, Nigeria. The Italian engineers that built it two decades ago must have had two things in mind: functionality and elegance. Alex’s fixed gaze at the skyline through the glass walls of the eighteenth floor could suggest admiration of this magnificent edifice, except for what seemed to bother his mind. He made up his mind to do what he had. He was going to discuss his issues with his mentor, Uncle Dan. Uncle Dan, “is matured enough to keep the confidentiality that I need.” He thought.

At age 48, no doubt, Alex was ahead of his peers and the envy of others. His initiative, drive and acumen brought the company, from the edge of liquidation to landmark profits. His wife, Alero, had every reason to believe that her dream of leaving her job for the sake of paying more attention to her children was just around the corner. Their union had been blessed with three wonderful children. Alex’s devotion to his family was unquestionable as he made time to play his role as a father as well as a husband and this allayed Alero’s heart of the worries her friends had on threats to their marriages. This was the situation until Pamela was brought in to relieve Funmilola, Alex’s P.A who had to proceed on maternity leave. Pamela, was new in the system, but had a lot of experience on the job. Alex’s first impression on the first day she resumed was that she looked so much like Tessy, his first love. They both had high cheek bone and very long hair. This coupled with their light complexion, made them look almost like identical twins. Alex knew how to draw boundaries with female subordinates, but his curiosity on this “first love-look-alike” seemed to re-enact his school days lifestyle. As expected, work dominated most of the conversation they had at the onset. But this

soon began to experience a decline. Pamela seemed to always strike the right chord anytime she was with Alex. Even when Alex was at home he was either chatting on his blackberry or on a call from Pamela. These did not arouse any suspicion from Alero initially, after all, she was his P.A. But the relationship between the two became less formal and the intimacy between them grew stronger until they crossed the lines and slept together. The first time it happened, Alex seemed to conclude it was a fling. But he was wrong. It happened again and again. Though he seemed to get away with the escapades, his conscience was neither forgiving nor forgetting. He knew he had left the path he set for himself many years before. A path of not towing the line that led his father into several complications in his later years. Some of which were regrettable. “I need to find someone who can understand what I am going through” he muttered as he starred at the glass walls seeing the reflection of his face, an image he was no longer so proud of. Wise Counsel I have no doubt that when Alex got married to Alero, he never thought one day he would be playing infidelity. The truth is that every man’s resolve to stay faithful to his wife will be tested at one time or the other. The situation and the circumstances of it may differ but the consequences are always dire and fatal. If a tree that flourishes suddenly begins to go dry, it will be foolhardy to look for what has gone wrong on the leaves. The answer to such a problem lies deep down in the roots. So also is Alex’s situation, he started well, being faithful to his wife until Pamela came along. He began to derail long before he slept with her. As soon as a man’s thought-life derails, it is only a matter of time; he will eventually head in the direction of his thought. At times, people think pornography only poses harm to unmarried people, but this opinion is erroneous. Everyman needs to watch what he spends his leisure doing. The bible says that “ Finally, beloved, whatever is true, whatever is honourable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever

Pamela, was new in the system, but had a lot of experience on the job. Alex’s first impression on the first day she resumed was that she looked so much like Tessy, his first love.

The truth is that every man’s resolve to stay faithful to his wife will be tested at one time or the other. The situation and the circumstances of it may differ but the consequences are always dire and fatal. is pleasing, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence and if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things” Phil 4:8. I challenge every man reading this article to allow the word of God to be your meditation on a daily basis. Ponder on it often. We live in a world where the masculine mind is under constant attack. This is because men are generally moved by what they see. So we need not compound the problem by focusing on anything that will corrode our ability to exercise self control. Like someone said “The mind is the greatest sex organ”. It is only as we let it focus on right things that we are capable of living a right life. Alex needs to now take steps that will save his marriage, before more damage is done. He needs to own up to all that has happened and realize that the only way forward is to open up to God, apologize to his wife and tow the path of recovery. Any sexual relationship outside of marriage is a violation of God’s law and will attract God’s wrath except one repents. Though difficult, Alex needs to build up enough courage to tell his wife what had happened. Yes! I have no doubt that she will be devastated, but she will eventually recover if she sees the genuineness of his turn around. The consequences of letting things go the way they are or allowing her to find out one day may be incomprehensible. It is necessary not to wish away or under-estimate the bond that has develop between him and Pamela, because of the fact that this has been allowed to go on for a while. There is no sacrifice or decision that will be too big to make in order to terminate this unholy affair. Such decision may include stopping Pamela from continuing as his P.A. If at all he gets another P.A, Alex must ensure that boundaries are set and kept. The advice for men nursing any feelings towards their colleagues, neighbors or anyone- spill the beans by confiding in your wife. Sin thrives in the atmosphere of secrecy. No doubt, doing the right at times may not bring the immediate relief but it always pays at the long run. Alex, by his actions have almost pulled down all that he and his wife have built together, rebuilding will demand that he allows the guidance of God’s Word and strengthen his resolve to now stay faithful to his wife.

The Generation We Must Not Lose By Efe Paul Azino

A

young man was to be sentenced to the

penitentiary. The judge had known him from childhood, for he was well acquainted with his father—a famous legal scholar and the author of an exhaustive study entitled, “The Law of Trusts.” “Do you remember your father?” asked the magistrate. “I remember him well, your honor,” came the reply. Then trying to probe the offender’s conscience, the judge said, “As you are about to be sentenced and as you think of your wonderful dad, what do you remember most clearly about him?” There was a pause. Then the judge received an answer he had not expected. “I remember when I went to him for advice. He looked up at me from the book he was writing and said, ‘Run along, boy; I’m busy!’ When I went to him for companionship, he turned me away, saying “Run along, son; this book must be finished!’ Your honor, you remember him as a great lawyer. I remember him as a lost friend.” The magistrate muttered to himself, “Alas! Finished the book, but lost the boy!” The effects of absentee fathers are obvious. There are tomes of research on the subject. Children who grow up without a father figure are prone to dropping out of school and more likely to suffer psychological disorders. The boys demonstrate a high propensity for aggression and delinquency and the girls develop a higher probability for risky sexual behavior. What is less obvious, however, is that there are more absentee fathers than we think. The demands of the modern world make it quite possible for fathers to be physically present yet absent. A man’s physical presence in the home does not automatically translate to growth and development for the children. He must be spiritually, emotionally and psychologically involved. This requires deliberate efforts.

20

DiscoveryMan / April/May 2013

Consider the nature of investments. Allocating capital is one of the most critical business functions in modern times. A firm’s decision to invest funds, efficiently, in long term assets in anticipation of an expected flow of benefits, over a period of time, is hardly taken lightly. It involves endless deliberations, appraisals and monitoring, drawing and holding the investor’s utmost attention. Men are no strangers to investments and it’s attending dynamics. They are wired to take the long-term view and are accustomed to making tradeoffs. So we invest time and effort creating material wealth while unconsciously trading off time spent with the kids. If we can make enough money to send our kids to the best schools, then they would be just fine. This, we reckon, would justify our emotional, spiritual and psychological absenteeism. This, unfortunately, does not always work out as planned. The richest woman in the world in 2012 was the Australian billionaire Gina Rinehart. But she made the news last year for something other than that. In a battle over the family trust, Ms. Rinehart said the kids “lacked the requisite capacity or skill, knowledge, experience, judgment or responsible work ethic” to manage the business and inheritance. And it appears Ms. Rinehart is not alone here. More than a third of high net worth individuals do not trust the next generation to protect their inheritance according to a new global study released by Barclay’s Wealth. Topping the list is the Middle East (78 percent), followed by Africa (77 percent), Latin America (75 percent), Asia Pacific (69 percent), Europe (62 percent), North America (61 percent) and Australia (59 percent). “The report has found that wealth is not the only thing that parents can pass on to their children,” noted Catherine Grumm, director, wealth advisory at Barclays Wealth. “Sharing insight into what the future holds, imparting advice on what it takes to be successful, and the skills needed to equip younger generations to achieve their goals in life are also important to parents.” We ought to skew our priorities a little bit. The greatest legacy we can bequeath to the world are men and women trained in the fear of the Lord, wired to be disciplined, steeped in ethics and enduring values. A sound institutional education is critical, and we must strive to give our children one. But nothing beats the education active fathers can provide. Our greatest investments are our children.

We must be involved every step of the way, guiding, teaching, appraising, protecting, and monitoring, as non-intrusively as we can. This cannot be left to mothers alone. We must walk the fine line of bread winning and raising champions. God is counting on us to. Of Abraham He said, “For I have known him, in order that he may command his children and his household after him, that they keep the way of

There is a huge deficit of role models as we speak. We cannot afford to outsource our primary responsibility to academic institutions and the modern global media machinery. We must step up to the plate and bridge the gap, ensuring that we transmit enduring values, founded on a truth, to those who must take the baton from us and run on. the LORD, to do righteousness and justice, that the LORD may bring to Abraham what He has spoken to him.” God placed the primary responsibility of training the children on Abraham, not Sarah. The onus is on us men. There is a huge deficit of role models as we speak. Many men reading this have been beneficiaries of great legacies, values transmitted to them in a world that has since vanished. Today, we have a generation of young men on the brink; young men coming up in a world that measures a man by the depth of his pocket and the breadth of his fame, a world connected by bit and bytes, where ancient values are giving way, melding into one universal ethos – consumerism. We cannot afford to outsource our primary responsibility to academic institutions and the modern global media machinery. We cannot afford to lose a generation. We must step up to the plate and bridge the gap, ensuring that we transmit enduring values, founded on a truth, to those who must take the baton from us and run on. Come on man, the world needs active fathers, present in mind, body and spirit. Come on man, the world needs you.

From Our Eyes

What wives and kids wish husbands and dads knew Family Time

Family Devotion

Wives After several complaints, my husband now spends some time at home by coming home early from work. However, I still have one big issue whenever he comes home early. It is like its only his body that comes home early. His spirit and soul always appears to still be at work. If he is not chatting with a friend, he is on a call most of the time. I want him to be fully at home, detached from work , talking and playing with me. —Sola A.

Wives I will love it if my husband can be taking the lead when it comes to the family devotion. I understand that most of the time he is in a hurry to leave the house and in no mood for long prayers, but all the same, he needs to demonstrate his leadership in this area. It will be good for my children to know that my husband has a consistent walk with God. —Ajoke E.

My husband enjoys sport all the time. I have tried to like his club and enjoy watching their games with him, but I realized it is robbing us of time to talk and unburden our hearts to each other. This was not so when we were courting. Most of his active time at home is either spent watching sport or News. After these activities my attempts to make us talk always prove ineffective as he sleeps off while I am talking. I wish things could return to the way they were when we were in courtship. —Helen M. Kids I want my daddy to help me with my homework from school. It is only mummy that helps me all the time. I want him to also pick me from school and take me to his office. I am a boy and I don’t want to always stay with my sister and my mummy. I want to follow daddy. —Emeka O. My daddy only take us out on Christmas day. I want him to take us out every Saturday to places. I want him to buy me more dolls, so I will have plenty things to play with. —Ada E. I will like daddy to cook for us. Mummy is the one that cooks our food all the time. I want daddy to cook for us for a change. —Tinuade Y.

I think our family devotion will be more interesting if my husband makes it more lively and interactive. Most of the time, so as to avoid delay of traffic, my husband’s style of “everybody-listen-while-I- speak” approach to family devotion leaves me and my children bored. We want fun, jokes, questions even as we learn. —Mary O.

Three Keys For Success By Babatunde Oladele

I

got this insight after watching a movie entitled

“Bubble Boy.” Human beings, when caged by self, dogma or fellow humans, cannot manifest their full potential or succeed in their endeavours. The very thought of freedom, manifestation, and success suggests an image of outward flow of activities rather than an inward blossomness. However, freedom, manifestation and success do not happen without some degree of internal and external struggle. These restrictions usually come in form of limitations imposed by self, others or the environment; and it is to the extent that you overcome them that you will be free and successful. Therefore, to be free, manifest or succeed; here are three keys you may find helpful:

1

Go out: You cannot reach your full potential unless you go out of your comfort zone. Have you seen a tortoise moving before? No matter how big or small it is, it cannot move anywhere until it juts its head out of the shell. Humans are no different. There is no progress unless you go out of your shell. You cannot succeed unless you discard the limiting beliefs and self-doubts that have held you down for whatever length of time. To grow, you need to proceed from one level of reasoning or operation to the next. To succeed, you have to go out of the miry of nonchalance and average performance.

2

Reach out: As you go out of your comfort zone or bland level to pursue your dreams and ideals, you need to reach out to people and resources that will help you to achieve your objectives along the way. Fortune most often does not favour the taciturn. You need to identify the persons or associations that can enhance you as a person as well as enable you to accomplish your aim, and then reach out to them. This is not limited to humans alone; as you are “going out” you will also encounter books, events and other resources that will be helpful to you. Reach out to them, subscribe to them, engage them and assimilate them.

3

Launch out: to the extent that you have gone out and reached out, you also need to launch out with the idea

Dare the odds and discouragements to launch out and start that business, NGO, product/service line, and whatever it is that you have tucked in the recess of your mind for so long. and initiative you have been nursing, or those that occur to you as you attain. A popular maxim holds that “people will not celebrate you for your intentions, but your actions.” To succeed, you need to have a sizable action quotient per day. And the key to doing that is making every hour count. Input substance into your hours and you will have a productive day. Never let an hour pass by without a substantial investment of rigorous thinking or effort with short, medium or long-term yield in it. Even the chunk of time you take to rest or spend with your family constitutes a judicious investment of time that will produce positives. So, don’t think it’s all about working alone. So, dare the odds and discouragements to launch out and start that business, NGO, product/service line, and whatever it is that you have tucked in the recess of your mind for so long. Don’t fall victim of the paralysis that develops from over-analysis. You will never know all there is to know, have all you need to start, nor have a panoramic view of all there is to see about the idea anyway. So start where you are. I conclude with a saying I heard some years ago, “instead of waiting for a perfect time, make the present time perfect.”

Planning and Your Business

By Olawale Olanihun

Business

“For which one of you, when he wants to build a tower, does not first sit down and calculate the cost to see if he has enough to complete it? Luke 14:28 (NASB)

P

lanning is pre-arranging sequence of

expected event in a predictable manner representing realistic and probable future. Perhaps I should have qualified my definition as that for good planning because it is quite possible for to draw up an unrealistic plan. In which case, it has been designed most likely to fail from day one. At this juncture I will try to differentiate between planning and goal setting. In simple word goal setting is determining where you are going, and planning is drawing up how to get there. Good and effective planning can only be achieved when certain basic inputs are available and applied in the right mix. One of such inputs is information. Timely and accurate information. As much as you need information about what may probably happen in the future, information about the past is also relevant to be able to generate a pattern that the future may hold. After information gathering, the next thing in line is to establish the effect of projected future occurrences on your figures. For example in planning next year financial activities, it is important to consider the probable effect of projected inflation rate on purchases. It is note worthy to mention that regardless of how objective your data input might be you need a lot of balanced subjective judgments to blend raw data to applicable information, spice up the projection to generate realistic future occurrence. There are levels of planning; planning could be strategic or operational. Strategic Level Planning involves setting overall objective for the business, mapping out medium and long term future of business, organization, career and personal life. It could be for factory expansion, branch location, post graduate degrees etc Operational Level Planning involves planning for day to day activities that are essential to the successful operation of the business, for example number of teller point s(service points ) in a bank, stock level before reorder etc Someone said the ABC of planning are Achievable, Believable and Concrete. Achievable: There is no point in making an overzealous plan that will not work, it won’t be worthy of the paper carrying it not talk of the time input to prepare

24

DiscoveryMan / April/May 2013

it. It is not how good it looks in the paper it is how realistic it is. Believable: Your plan must worth something big enough for you to have faith. In his words he said; your plan must be big enough to make adrenalin run in your blood stream. Big enough to commit a place in your heart to the art and act of believing. And you must believe in its actualisation. Concrete: Your plan must be firm and able to stand the test of time. You must put into considerations predictable occurrences that may have significant effect on the actualisation of the plan. It will not be good enough if in the first month of the year; an easily predictable event occurres which effectively renders the whole plan useless. Why Do We Plan People plan for different reasons. Some do because a bank has requested for a business plan and some for the purpose of determining whether the journey is worth the while. Plans are guiding light, a supposed pathway in the wilderness. After a carefully prepared business plan an entrepreneur may decide not to go the way of the supposed investment because of issues that get exposed by planning. Therefore I make bold to say; I will rather set up a plan for my decision making rather than for the purpose of the bank use. If your plan reveals a good business, carefully reviewed and risks well mitigated, then you don’t have reasons to perform financial engineering and reengineering on your projected statements. If in the face of it, it is not good enough for a bank to say “let’s support him”, then its probably not good enough for you. I am a strong advocate of mobility in life, but with a balance; mobility in the right direction. There is no point in running towards Onitsha when your destination is Ilorin. You’ll need more resources and probably will be difficult to recover. Plans reveal weakness of our desired direction, expose threat and warn us of danger ahead. Then it becomes our pick to go ahead and grab the opportunities in the face in the possible adverse outcome. I do not intend to paint plan and planning as a red flag document/activity, be it far from it. I only intend to emphasise that red flag issues because it is only natural for us to see the opportunity first before we sell our heart to the project. Thereafter our positive bias clouds our judgements and make us grow imaginary wings that can fly above the limitations without making provisions for them.

Plans lay before you a picture of the desired and expected tomorrow. It reveals in good time if some things are going off the line and allows you to quickly make adjustments. Control is only possible if there is a yard stick (plan). Please don’t miss understand my point, I have not and will not throw faith out the window. Wisdom is only profitable to direct. And wisdom dictates that we should see the risk create mitigants to prevail over them and at this, point drive the process of prevailing over them with faith. Faith in God and your abilities. Having said all that, it is clear that the guy who needs the plan is you and not your bank. You need to plan for the following purposes

Business

5. To determine opportunities and threats 6. To determine weakness and strength 7. Planning allows you to have control over your future. Plans lay before you a picture of the desired and expected tomorrow. It reveals in good time if some things are going off the line and allows you to quickly make adjustments. Control is only possible if there is a yard stick (plan). If you are not in control then you will be controlled. The world is designed for someone to have dominion. If you don’t have it then someone else does, at least the situation. At this point I will like to narrow down my direction to business plan. But before I close shop on the general note I will like to state that your plan need not to be in volumes of series of hard cover books. The most important thing is that your plan is packed enough for your deal. If ten pages are good enough for your project then additional pages will only create confusion. Avoid adoption templates. It is important that your plan is not unnecessarily complicated thereby confusing. Your plan must be:

1. To facilitate goal achievement Set out how to reach a set goal. A road map to the land of promise and step by step actualisation of a dream. 2. To facilitate assessment Plans helps us to assess performance, to determine how well we are running against set targets. Such assessment helps to re-evaluate our position, processes and any other limiting factor, in order to drive greater efficiency and deliver better result. It should be clear form day one that performance can only be measured against a pre-set target, otherwise performance measurement becomes impossible or counter productive. 3. To reduce risk and loss As earlier mentioned; plans reveal road blocks ahead and assist us to make provisions for them, either by circumventing or outright removal or worst possible case; walking away. Verily, verily I say unto you some business are not really worth the trouble 4. To make good decisions Plans are like light in the darkness of confusion. They help us to react and take a position in good time.

26

DiscoveryMan / April/May 2013

Simple and direct: Plans need to be as simple and direct as possible to aid easy understanding of the statements. Your plan must be simple enough to speak for itself. Factual and Objective: Business plans must be full of facts and objective statements which are useful for decision making. You must carefully avoid subjective and emotional statements; they create a biased picture which may not help in the long run. Conclusion Above all these lines you need discipline to drive your budget. Stick to your course so long as your compass is pointing towards the right direction, otherwise you will be lost in the ocean. Also, never forget that kicking off a business without the science that a business plan provides can be a self initiated attack on the enterprise from day one. If you cannot afford to pay a consultant to draw up one for you, there are countless templates online, even free of charge, to help you create an effective one and eliminate any excuse forever.

Investing In The Time Of Famine The best time to invest in stock By Muktar Mohammed “Then Isaac sowed in the land, and received in the same year a hundredfold, and the LORD blessed him. And the man waxed great, and went forward, and grew until he became very great” Genesis 26:12-13

verything in life has a process but most people

are not ready to follow the process before they get results. The same can be said of the stock market, it has a process. The stock market is like a pendulum that swings forward between unsustainable optimism, (like we had in the Nigerian Stock Exchange in 2006) which makes stock too expensive and unjustified pessimism (like in 2008 (which makes stock very cheap). The intelligent investor is a realist who sells to the optimist and buys from the pessimist. This is investing in the time of crisis, which I call “Investing In The Time Of Famine” to have a hundredfold return like Isaac. The best time to invest in stock market is the time of crisis when stocks with good fundamentals are selling low, at this time stock becomes less risky. Stock market panics are the best time to make money because the market always overreact and they always correct themselves as can be seen from the table below. Stock

This table shows a one year performance of the stocks of these companies that were listed on the floor of the Nigerian Stock Exchange. From this table you can see

The intelligent investor is a realist who sells to the optimist and buys from the pessimist. that the best time to invest is in the time of crisis when you can make good return on your investment. The best performing stock exchange in the world in 2012 were in countries that were going through crisis like Egypt, Kenya and Nigeria. The best time to invest is when the newspapers are using the fall of the market as front page headlines. But when you read in the paper that the market is doing well, then it is the best time to sell. Do you want to make a hundredfold return like Isaac? Then sow in the time of crisis. Till the next edition keep investing for a rich future.

State of the Nation

State of the Nation

The Demands of the Times By Pastor Kunle Soriyan

O

2000 years into the last days and we are just getting ready for the most heightened period of lawlessness, evil, wickedness, malevolence, treachery, corruption, violence, destruction, natural and man-made disasters, social and economic imbalance, poverty, immorality, and sin in the history of human existence (Isaiah 60:2a; Daniel 12: 1; Matthew 24: 4-13; 1 Timothy 4: 1-3). Also, this same period (the last days) will witness the greatest knowledge explosion of human history—where knowledge will be used and interpreted in ways never imagined possible (Daniel 12: 4). New economic and social re-engineering models will be discovered to alter permanently, the way humans and animals live, love, work and war. The prophetic perilous times are actually a call to remaining compliant and relevant in this brain-powered or knowledge-driven revolution—a revolution of evil, ills and sourness; and of bliss, development and prosperity. The challenge however is that Christians, particularly those in Africa, are really not on the cutting edge of these engagements. You know, we need to shift from the daily concerns about how to make enough money to buy more, consume more and manage depreciation more. We really don’t know that is what we do, but that is it! Every family, individual, company and nation of the times we speak of, must raise its game. Yet, there remains a unique role for the people of God in these times—-a role where

bviously, we are now over

In the 2000s, humanity is at the threshold of an unprecedented time in the history of existence. The way to go is to: (1) Remain on the cuttingedge of the knowledge demands and exchange of our time; (2) Embrace innovation as a critical success factor and (3) Maintain an ever-increasing walking-talking relationship with the Holy Spirit without games.

Christians will function as the exception to all the chaos and disorder of the times—-a role as the singular hope for and voice of balance, peace and security. What is true is that, though darkness will cover the earth and deep darkness the people, discerning Christians are to experience immunity; and justifiably so, because we will be the very equilibrium in society (Isaiah 60: 2-22). Now, the first consolation for Christians is that, if they develop and maintain a walking-talking relationship with the Holy Spirit, they will be guaranteed divine guidance (Romans 8: 14) to enable them stay ahead of their times and know what to do like the sons of Issachar (1 Chronicles 12: 32). This is remaining compliant and relevant in this brainpowered revolution. The implication is that we will not beat the world by remaining valleys or hills and expect God to use us beat the mountain capacity of the secular. No! It means we will match the secular, talent for talent, discipline for discipline, skill for skill, competence for competence, expertise for PATTERN of the wisdom and exploits will be so expertise—both Christians and Unbelievers will be powerful and compelling that people, organizamasters of their fields and authorities in their areas tions, institutions and nation-states will practically of interest and influence. Simply amazing! I Had Low Self Esteem And Didn’t Even Believe In Myself… —Holy Mallam Ajibola Adebayo is his name but you’d be forgiven if you’ve never heard of it because he goes by the name Holy Mallam and he is one of the busiest comedians in Nigeria. In this interview with DiscoveryMan Digest, he reveals how he has carved a niche for himself in comedy and how he has risen to the top of the game without dirty or offensive jokes. Why the prefix “Holy” to your name? What was the objective? I started out with the name Mallam and later thought of adding something to it. So I added “Holy” to it. I also know that God expects us to be Holy, Heb 13:5 which says “be you holy for I am Holy”. What led you into comedy and what were the challenges you faced starting out I was a member of the choir group in my church, where I was a drummer. Then I would watch comedians come and perform in the church and they will get people laughing. At this time I had few friends who kept encouraging me that I should step out and crack some of my jokes in the church. Back then I had low self esteem and didn’t even believe in myself. But because of their pressure and the fact that they laughed every time a cracked jokes I took it risk. Then the d-day came when I and friend were scheduled to perform. My friend was called first, after which I was called on to perform after him. Unfortunately for me, I had shared all the jokes that I wanted to crack with my friend and for some reasons beyond my comprehension, he said them all on stage. There I was on stage thinking of what to do. Then suddenly I began to flow. The performance was so successful I was shocked myself. It was where I found the courage to start. How do you cope with pressures from your female admirers? Sincerely there are pressures from all directions; from fans, from Christian sisters, from clients, etc. But focus is the key. Once you are focused and you hold onto God, you will overcome the pressures. When they come I just remember that I can’t but be the next Joseph, the man who fled to keep his covenant with God. Are there jobs you have turned down because of your faith? Oh yes! There are so many, and there will still be many that I will still turn down. I have tempting offers that promised great financial rewards, but they fell short when it came to ethics. I remember when I started out, I was

30

DiscoveryMan / April/May 2013

approached to perform in a place with half nude ladies, I had to turn them down. Life it not just about money, it about positive impact. I would not associate with anything negative. If it is not clean jokes, it is not Holly Mallam. How do you balance work and family life? Ahh! I love to spend time with my family a lot. When I am not working I like to stay with them. My wife is my close friend. So we can be together and gist for long. The music and video industry in Nigeria has gained grounds, but there are complains about its the nudity and obscenity. What advise do you have for Christians who have to swim in these waters? It’s simple. Know what you stand for and don’t be intimidated. Where do you get your jokes from? God is my source of inspiration If you were to leave comedy today, what other thing will you for a living? My number one passion is motivational speaking. I love to challenge people to discover the reason why they were born and help them fulfill it. I am presently doing a lot of it. I must say that this is my passion and not necessarily business, because it about making impact in others. I have other businesses I am into. I do product endorsement, importation and others that I will like to speak on yet. Comedians earn huge incomes now, thus many young people now aspire to become comedians, what advise do you have for them? Please be original. Be confident. Don’t relent. Also be original. These days, people steal other people jokes, because everyone wants to be a comedian. You don’t have give-in to that. Stay away from anything that is unethical. You will make your mark.

Life it not just about money, it about positive impact. I would not associate with anything negative. If it is not clean jokes, it is not Holly Mallam.

What will you love to be remembered for? I will love to be remembered as someone who helped other fulfill their purpose in life.

Health

Low Back Pain In Men By Dr. Olakunle Aiyegbo

B

ack pain is a discomfort, ache

or even throbbing sensation that is felt in the back. This sensation may originate from either the muscles, nerves, bones, joints or other structures in the spine. Back pain may have a sudden onset or can be a chronic pain(after a period of time); it can be constant or intermittent, stay in one place or exudes to other areas. It may be a dull ache, or a sharp or piercing or burning sensation. The pain may radiate into the arms and hands as well as the legs or feet, and may include symptoms other than pain. These symptoms may include tingling, weakness or numbness. Epidemiological data suggests that risk factors, including extreme height, cigarette smoking, and morbid obesity, may predispose an individual to back pain. Furthermore, job dissatisfaction, work conditions, legal and social factors, financial stressors, and emotional circumstances heavily influence back disability. Others include heavy physical work, lifting, prolonged static work postures, and exposure to vibration may also contribute. To minimize the effect of LBP in men, I came up with the mnemonic P.E.A.D. These are discussed below:

Prevention: This involves life style modifications and minimization of risk factors to the barest minimum. While factors like age are non-modifiable, modifiable factors such as sedentary lifestyle, Obesity, Smoking and excessive alcohol intake can all be worked upon to decrease chances of been a victim to LBP. Exercise: Therapeutic exercises should be started early to control pain, and restore function. No single treatment or exercise program has proven effective for all patients with LBP, hence exercise programs are usually personalized. Various studies have shown that the occurrence of LBP may be reduced by strengthening the back, legs, and abdomen (core muscle groups). Analegics& Physical Modalities: Oral medications (acetaminophen, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs [NSAIDs], muscle relaxants, and opioids) and injection treatments are available for the treatment of LBP. Physical

modalities include moist heat and cold treatments. Selfadministrated home programmes using moist heat and ice are often used; these can be applied to the area for 20 minutes two or three times per day, although moist heat should not be used in the first 72 hours after injury. Lumbar support devices for low back problems include corsets, support belts, various types of braces, molded jackets, and back rests for chairs and car seats. Also recent evidence suggests that traditional Chinese acupuncture and therapeutic massage is beneficial in the treatment of chronic LBP. Doctor’s Regular Visit: This involves regular visit to the physician who is better trained to managed low back pain. With his or her expertise, the physician is able to determine the cause, rule out any red flags that may point to a more serious and debilitating disease like Cancer, provide adequate patient education and any activity modification that can help in alleviating the pain. Finally the physician is well equipped to refer to an appropriate non back specialist like Neurology and Rheumatology specialist In conclusion, the advent of low back pain in men’s health cannot be wished away but must be confronted as more researches and medical literatures highlight the propensity of increase in patients with low back pain as more communities become more industrialized. Men can still live healthier lives despite this scourge, but this can only be achieved by the above regimen.

K   aribu Kenya – Welcome to Kenya By Maurice & Rahab Omunzi

T

ravelling has always been about discovery, and it is through travel-

ling that we learn about the world. It’s not just a financial exchange; it’s the exchange of experience, faces and people. And the best way to understand another culture, experience it firsthand. Kenya is one of the world’s great tourism destinations, lying astride the equator on the eastern coast of Africa. It is a medium-sized country by continental standards but no other country on earth can offer the visitor as much to see and do. Within the borders of a single country, you will find savannahs rich with big game, timeless cultures unchanged by the modern world, pristine beaches and coral reef, equatorial forests and mighty snow-capped mountains, searing deserts and cool highland retreats and endless opportunities for adventure, discovery, relaxation; more than you would ever expect...Kenya is a world unto itself. When you travel to Kenya, make sure these top attractions are on your list…

The Annual Migration of Wildebeest and Zebra Picture this… over two million herbivores in one place, at the same time, the ground underneath your feet shaking as they thunder past, plunging into the mighty Mara River… with all the carnivores right in the midst! It is one of nature’s biggest spectacles – one of the seven wonders of the modern world.

Amboseli National Park It’s one of Kenya’s most popular safari destinationsand home to the Maasai. The park is set in the shadows of Mount Kilimanjaro, offering incredible views (when it chooses to peak out from behind the clouds). Besides the beauty of the area, the main draw of Amboseli includes: a huge elephant population, prolific bird species and amazing views of Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest mountain on the continent. Nairobi’s Top Attractions Nairobi’s top attractions include a national park, museums, wildlife orphanages, craft galleries, shop for souvenirs, and eat your heart out at the Carnivore... Mount Kenya This is Africa’s second largest mountain, and despite peaking at over 5,000m it still seems to sit well and truly in Kilimanjaro’s shadow. Enjoy treks in its jagged snowcapped peaks, and through its sweeping glacial valleys. Tsavo West National Park One of the top attractions of this national park is the Mzima springs. You get to watch elephants bathe among the hippos and the crocs from a unique vantage point of an under-water glass tank. The baobabs that dot the landscape aren’t too shabby either. Tsavo East National Park Kenya’s largest park, Tsavo East National Park is just an hour’s drive from Mombasa and home to giraffe, elephant, lion, cheetah–basically all the favorites. Luckily its man-eating lions have long since been dealt with.

Lamu Lamu is Kenya’s oldest inhabited town, it dates back to the 14th century and its “old town” is largely unchanged. With its strong Muslim roots this UNESCO World heritage Center is a must-see. Malindi and Mombasa Wonderful beaches and excellent snorkeling make this historic town one of Kenya’s top attractions.

How do you feel when people interpret your artwork differently? I feel good when my work is generating different interpretations. A trained art critique can bring out things in your work that are blind to you thus making you a better artist.

DiscoveryMan / April/May 2013

In fact some of the world’s most celebrated artworks have generated different public interpretations thus arousing curiosity and making the work even famous and in turn adds to the value of the work. So for me, it is a plus.

Premier League teams step-aside as Champions league reach quarter-finals By Wale Elegbede

F

17-years, no English side was involved in the Champions League quarter-final draw, barely ten months Chelsea were crowned kings of Europe in Munich, Germany. How can anyone explain the presence of teams like Galatasary of Turkey, Malaga of Spain, PSG of France in the last eight ahead of English clubs, which hold a statistics of having a team from the premiership playing in seven of the last eight Champions League finals. Clearly, the dominance will not continue but with the weight, viewership and publicity rave it enjoys, such collapse has no other appellation but failure. While Manchester United could console them for being edged out after a controversial red-card to midfielder Nani, the waning defending champions, Chelsea could not but or the first time in

give up due to the implosion that faced the team especially in its managerial cadre. Even though they didn’t rise to the occasion despite being pitched in one of the toughest group, the array of talent and the confidence of being crowned the champions of premier league, was expected to pilot the Manchester United team, but they never made it through the group stage, talk more of round of 16. Maybe Arsenal was not as formidable as they were always rated, but one thing is certain, their familiar style of football that made them toast of fans worldwide, was missing. While their home performance in the first leg against Bayern Munich was so woeful, the return leg looked through to type of Wenger team, unfortunately, that day is often a day too late.

Keshi, Super Eagles and the rest of us By Wale Elegbede

Quarter–Finals Fixtures Paris Saint-German v Barcelona  Tuesday, 2nd April, 8:45pm The return of Zlatan Ibrahimovic will be the headline story, but if anyone’s out for revenge against his former club, it will be Thiago Motta. While PSG possess pace on the counterattack through Ezequiel Lavezzi, it is doubtful whether they will be able to compete in the centre of midfield with the crystal diadem machine of Xavi, Iniesta and of course, Lionel Messi.

46

Bayern Munich v Juventus  Tuesday, 2nd April, 8:45pm This is unquestionably the tie of the quarter-final stage, an exciting clash between two imminent league champions. The battle will be in the midfield as the Jupp Heynckes’s Bayern are a typical modern side with a strong compact passing a 4-2-3-1 system, while Juventus are something of an anomaly in this competition, favouring a 3-5-2 system with rampaging wing-backs and a traditional strike duo up front.

DiscoveryMan / April/May 2013

Málaga v Borussia Dortmund  Wednesday, 3rd April, 8:45pm The tie is dicey but Dortmund looks like the favorite. Jürgen Klopp’s side should progress, but Málaga are exactly the type of side that will cause them difficulties.

Real Madrid v Galatasaray  Wednesday, 3rd April, 8:45pm Jose Mourinho could have been handed a relatively easy draw, but the tactical dexterity of Fatih Terim on Galatasary bench cannot be faulted. Head or tail, the Turkish side will struggle to hold back the tide against a Madrid team that flourish on the counterattack.

W

hen Stephen Okechukwu Keshi was appointed as the manager of the Super Eagles on the 2nd of November 2011, nobody gave him a chance to win any silverware, not even under thirteen months after he took up one of the hottest managerial seat in Africa. Prior to the ‘unexpected success’ at South Africa, Nigerian football as a brand was in the doldrums; most especially on critical issues of management, administration, funds and development. It even got so embarrassing that the nation failed to qualify for the 2012 Nations Cup jointly hosted by Equatorial Guinea and Gabon. With the clamor for local manager for the national team intense, the football federation decided to give Keshi, who had a distinct playing career that spanned through more than two decades, mostly in Belgian clubs, the opportunity to manage the Super Eagles. The ‘Big Boss’, as fondly called, got his coaching certificate from the United States, had some sleazy coaching stints with national teams in the country, took up the managerial job of the Togolese national football team, and unexpectedly qualified them to their first world cup tournament, Germany 2006, and also cut his teeth as

the manager of the Mali national football team before he was appointed by Nigeria. Clearly, new stones of ethos should be picked from the victory of the Super Eagles to formulate and build blocks of success as individuals, family unit, organization and the nation at large. The instructive principles that can be adapted from the Keshi-led team are focus, commitment, cohesion, teamwork, proper leadership guidance and a winning mentality from the perspective of the bigger picture. As the country continues to relish the Eagles victory which extends beyond sporting context, it is needful to filter the spirit and determination of the team to succeed across dying homes, sectors, organizations, relationships whilst keeping the act of prayers constant in the drive for such revival. Nigeria is blessed with abundance of resources in all sphere of human endeavor. Like the Keshi wand, ethnic consideration, laziness and indulging in all manners of cutting-corners to make things happen should be discarded at every expected level of responsibilities. It is expected that Keshi would keep the momentum and ensure that the present crop of players would also experience the sort of laurels and heights attained by the Illah (Anioma) Delta State-born tactician. Notable among laurels in the kitty of Keshi are: African Nations Cup (ANC) 1994 and now 2013 (with Nigeria); West African Club Championship, 1983, 1984 (with new Nigeria Bank Fc); Coupe Houphoet Boigny, 1985, 1986 (with Stade of Abidjan); Cote d'Ivoire premier division 1986 (with Africa Sports); Jupiler League 1991 (with Anderlecht); and Belgian Cup 1988, 1989 (with Anderlecht).

That She May Call You Chef!

Giving a helping hand in the kitchen By Chef Fregz

T

he dish I’m talking about today was named after my mum and it reminded me of the kind of food she gave to me while growing up so it’s not so chaffy after all. Bella Bella is a delicious creamy chicken pasta with vegetables and it’s relatively easy to prepare but the twist is in the making of the roux. To prepare this dish I recommend you use shell and/or elbow pasta or some penne pasta to enable it soaks up a lot of the creamy goodness in the holes and crannies of the pasta. Where you cannot find the shell and elbow pasta, you can also use farfelle or “bowtie” or any pasta that has curves and crannies that can take up the sauce. If you have linguine pasta or a wider one like fetticunie, it’s alright. Please note that fresh cracked black pepper is an essential element of this dish as well.

Preparation 1. In a deep pot, place some water to boil and sprinkle some salt. Gently place the pasta in and cook according to packet instruction, then drain. Keep the pasta warm and reserve some of the cooking water to help separate it when it sticks together. 2. While the pasta is cooking, you can start making the roux. In a saucepan (on a medium heat), put the flour and butter and use a whisk to stir around till the flour and butter start to dry out and look like mass lump or crumbs then add the wine and cook for half a minute. Gently pour in the milk a little at a time. The mixture will thicken as you cook it. Add all the milk, the

Confirm that it’s done when the raw flour taste has been eradicated. At this point add the cream and stir till it’s thoroughly mixed and set aside. 3. In a hot pan, sear the chicken cubes you have made on all sides for about a minute and set to one side. Also stir fry all the vegetables in a pan. Turn off the heat and add the vegetables and chicken to the pasta and pour the cream sauce you have made and mix everything thoroughly. Finish with a sprinkling of parsley and a spring for garnish. At the end you may want to indulge more and grate over some parmesan or whatever cheese you fancy. This recipe also works if you add some shrimp marinated in garlic/celery salt at the mixture to cook stage. If you feel it’s too creamy and not hot enough, add some finely chopped pepper (ata rodo) to the roux so the pepper cooks out and adds the necessary heat and spice! All the ingredients are available around you; visit Shoprite, Goodies, Park ‘n’ Shop, La Pointe Supermarket (Kofo Abayomi street Victoria Island) L’epicerie (Idowu Martins Street Victoria island) and look around your local market for the vegetables. Impress your wife today and God bless you as you do so! Ciao!
