FIU - SPRING 2020 / HENRY RUEDA/ NEW YORK
The studio had examined three major topics, Program: an Art Institution building; Tectonics: a brick construction proposal and Site: located in the City of New York, New York. Art Institution’s buildings are complex, technologically advanced, site specific and highly functional, however with the development of digital technologies, fabrication and internetbased outreach, at first glance, they seem as an “endangered species”, among the architectural landscape. Throughout history, architects had found ways to understand all the technical constraints of these programs and transform it into iconic, innovative, engaging and creative buildings

Studio had produced a series of documents/drawings/collage, with a conceptual urban analysis of Manhattanville in relationship to the City of New York. Main objective of this comparative analysis is to understand scale, local vs global and the relationships of our Site with its immediate and larger physical context. Research will focus on understanding of Scale conditions, Character, Land Use and future development of the areas around the Park as well as definitions of potential sites within our larger site. Students will produce conceptual drawings of Manhattanville by understanding the following precedents on three different cities. Each student will produce a series of conceptual/analytical collage images. A single image of each case will summarize this analytical exercise based on elements or conditions of relevant concepts of the precedents.

02 STELEVATE Affordable housing in Skidrow, Los Angeles
FIU -DESIGN 10 / GLENDA PUENTE / SKIDROW, LA The project started with idea of stepwells in India. In ancient times, the stepwell has been used as a symbol of religious space and for public gathering. The topic could be related with the homeless people in Skidrow in terms of Mental illness. The best way to cure the severity in mind is to talk to others and to be in a pleasant place. The aim of the project is to create one such space. Gaining the core of the stepwell with gathering space and steps used as a seating for the people to talk and spend time when hey need to. With the steps only in the first floor. Rest of the top floors are given a gathering space. Each floor has its own gathering space so that the residents don’t have to come to the first floor everytime they want to talk or meet. The project also aims to bring as many as homeless people in with more number of rooms being provided.

The project also aims to bring as many as homeless people in with more number of rooms being provided The term “skid row” or “skid road,” referring to an area of a city where people live who are “on the skids,” derives from a logging term. Loggers would transport their logs to a nearby river by sliding them down roads made from greased skids. Loggers who had accompanied the load to the bottom of the road would wait there for transportation back up the hill to the logging camp. By extension, the term began to be used for places where people with no money and nothing to do gathered, becoming the generic term in English-speaking North America for a depressed street in a city.[.
