SCOTTISH CANALS

Scots businesses set to benefit from World Canals Conference in Inverness this September Businesses are being urged to get involved with the prestigious World Canals Conference which is visiting the Highlands of Scotland this autumn. Scottish Canals, who are organising the event, is calling on organisations across a range of sectors, including engineering, construction, tourism, heritage and environment, to benefit from the £300,000 economic windfall that the 300 international waterway experts, academics and business leaders from 20 countries will bring to the four day event in Inverness. Running from Monday 19th to Thursday 22nd September, the conference will take place at the gateway to the majestic Caledonian Canal, and will offer public, private and third sector organisations the opportunity to showcase their expertise to potential customers and partners across the UK, Europe and beyond. The conference, which has been hosted in the past by Milan in Italy, Grand Canal in China and Montreal in Canada, will celebrate innovative thinking and cuttingedge delivery across a range of disciplines including; sustainable tourism development, regeneration, heritage management, climate

change and engineering within the iconic landscape of the Scottish Highlands. The flagship event will also showcase the many attractions of Scotland’s 137-mile canal network, from the creation of The Kelpies, the largest equine sculptures on the planet which have attracted over one million visitors since opening in 2014 to the Falkirk Wheel’s role as the world’s only rotating boat lift and an iconic tourist destination. Steve Dunlop, Chief Executive of Scottish Canals, said: “We’re absolutely thrilled to be hosting the 2016 World Canals Conference and it couldn’t come at a better time. Scotland’s historic inland waterways are in the midst of a renaissance and there are a huge number of exciting projects taking place on the nation’s canals, from the water to the banks and beyond. “With just months to go until the conference kicks off, we’re taking this chance to tell businesses up and down the country that if they want to get involved, either as a speaker, sponsor or delegate, now is the time. “The conference is shaping up to be the best yet and the feedback we’ve had so far has been incredibly positive; this event offers businesses a unique opportunity to export their knowledge, expertise and specialism overseas and to make valuable contacts which will hopefully translate into new contracts.”

Each day celebrates a different theme: Technical challenges and innovation Growing tourism and commercialising the assets Waterways as a driver for regeneration Safeguarding the heritage of our waterways. Before, during and after the conference delegates will get the opportunity to explore the beautiful sights and industry of the Scottish Highlands with organised trips to locations such as Glen Ord Distillery, Cawdor Castle, Loch Ness and the beautiful town of Fort Augustus as part of the Caledonian Canal – as well as Edinburgh, Glasgow, Falkirk and Crinan in Argyll and Bute. The event also includes a Gala Awards Dinner to recognise international excellence across asset management, community engagement, training and volunteering. FOREWORD

We must raise our game Nora Senior

Chair, Scottish Chambers of Commerce Executive Chair of UK Regions & Ireland, Weber Shandwick

We stand on the verge of an era of new powers and new political responsibilities in Scotland. This next phase will require each and every one of us who cares about the prosperity of Scotland to raise our game. So how can we raise our game so that a small country like Scotland can reach its potential? Firstly, we need to be exporting a great deal more than we are. If we drill down into the various figures and reports, the main concern in Scotland is that too many exports are concentrated among a very narrow range of businesses. Just 100 Scottish businesses are responsible for 60% of our exports. With this in mind, the Chambers have spent the past three years building a new pathway to help businesses into new markets. We are doing three things: firstly, we are adding to our international trade service offering for members, we are growing our Global Business Network through the international Chambers of Commerce brand and thirdly, we are establishing direct partnerships with private sector companies such as Turkish Airlines and Barrhead Travel to make the cost of international travel more cost effective for exporters. Of course most of the growth in exports these days comes in the field of ecommerce. According to the ONS, an astonishing £492bn or 18% of UK turnover now derives from this channel, with successes like FanDuel and Skyscanner paving the way for a new generation of online exporters. But in order to exploit the opportunity of ecommerce, business needs to be connected, and here, the task of raising our game is critical. Digital communications infrastructure is as fundamental to 21st century Scottish industry as canals were to the 18th, railways to the 19th and motorways and airports to the 20th century. Therefore, Government must plan investment accordingly. Yes, there must be a focus on physical investment in areas such as broadband, fibre optics and 4G but we also need to invest in our talent pool – boys as well as girls! We should not lose sight of the fact that business still needs to step up to the task of nurturing the pipeline of women at middle management level onto executive boards. More work remains to be done on internal training and appointments as well as external appointments to ensure that female talent can rise to the very top on an executive Board. That means we need to boost young women’s confidence to enter non-traditional careers; and we need to nurture the development of an agile working culture. As a Network, we are intent on raising our game and our profile as we seek to make Scotland the kind of country where what business needs and what business can contribute are top of mind for politicians and policy-makers.

Looking forward to 2016 with confidence Liz Cameron OBE

Director/Chief Executive, Scottish Chambers of Commerce

A lot happened in 2015 that none of us saw coming. We were surprised in turn by the prolonged recovery, the deep and damaging continuation slump of our oil price, by the return of a majority Conservative government at Westminster, by the election of a hard left Labour leader, and by the closing of one of Scotland’s main arteries, the Forth Road Bridge. That infrastructure failure blighted the year end for thousands of Scottish businesses and reminded all of us of the importance of continually investing in our transport infrastructure. Given the above, it would be rash to offer predictions about how global economic circumstances will impact and influence business and the economy in Scotland in 2016. Unpredictability also surrounds the Westminster Government’s plans to hold a referendum on EU membership, both the timing and the possible terms of the UK’s future membership, on which we will all be asked to vote. For all that, we at the Scottish Chambers of Commerce Network look forward to 2016 with confidence. As Scotland’s largest business network, the Scottish Chambers of Commerce stands ready to play its part. Our initiatives ranging from increased international B2B trade links – for example through our engagement with our network of world-wide Chambers - to a strengthening engagement with Westminster lawmakers. We also have plans to promote a better understanding of the power of ecommerce, a specialist area where Scotland performs worse than all other parts of the UK. The Parliament that is elected in May will acquire an unprecedented array of tax making powers, giving it far greater control over its own revenues and far more flexibility over how these taxes are applied. The big question that those seeking to wield these powers is this: Will they make Scotland a better place to do business and will they thus maximise the revenue needed to fund the increasingly heavy demands on our vital social services? We asked the Scottish Party Leaders their vision for businesses in Scotland so don’t miss out on reading the Special Feature in this edition! Throughout 2016, we will argue relentlessly that politicians must do nothing that stands in the way of nurturing profitable business, as only by encouraging enterprise can our shared social aims be achieved. However it is constituted, we pledge to work with a new Parliament that sees business as a partner, not as a target, as only this way can Scotland create the jobs, wealth and exports that will deliver prosperity and essential support to all our citizens.

Oil and gas reforms rolled out over the last 18 months have opened doors to foreign investment, and recent developments have marked a new chapter in the bidding auction for exploration and production licences.

The trip had a unique aspect too.

Earlier this year, a delegation of 28 firms from the region travelled over 5,000 miles to visit Mexico City and Tabasco to showcase their expertise and innovation to the industry there.

But why are firms so keen to go to Mexico now?

It seems certain that the 77-year monopoly enjoyed by PEMEX is now over.

A period of reform is taking place in PEMEX, the state-owned energy company formed in 1938.

Opening up to foreign investors on exploration and production also opens the market to the supply chain, and there is great interest in attracting the expertise from the North-east into the largely unexplored deep waters in the Gulf of Mexico.

Not only is the market opening up to foreign investment, but years of state ownership also mean that the kind of innovation that has maximised recovery from aging wells in the UKCS is welcome in Mexico too. Future developments into deep water also

At a time when collaboration is encouraged in the industry, Aberdeen & Grampian Chamber of Commerce, Subsea UK, the EIC, and NOF worked together to get their members to Mexico, sharing costs and passing on the savings to members, while UKTI and Scotland Development International have supported SMEs in exporting to new markets, some of them for the first time. This trade mission further cemented the relationship established during the Mexican presidential visit to Aberdeen in March this year. It demonstrates though that North-east business knows that finding new markets is critical to the future success of their businesses and retaining the oil & gas cluster in the region. Waterfront Regeneration project enters exciting phase

Chamber provides a strong start for young talent Caithness Chamber of Commerce has built a strong reputation for supporting and celebrating entrepreneurs of all ages and backgrounds. Providing mentoring and development opportunities such as the Business Support Programme, funded by Dounreay Site Restoration Limited, and recognising achievements with such awards as the Chamber’s George Bruce Young Entrepreneur of the Year and newly established Young Business of the Year. Each of these channels focus on encouraging local entrepreneurs to transform their passion into meaningful employment. For this to be possible, the Chamber has identified that key entrepreneurial values and skillsets must be developed throughout the education system. Chamber staff have been involved in many educational projects which seek to cultivate these talents from future generations, including the Young Enterprise Challenge, which saw students from local schools compete to develop and produce a product for market, and work tirelessly throughout the year with local employers and education providers to address skills gaps and provide greater opportunities for the region’s young people. Most recently, Caithness Chamber facilitated the iStart Challenge with North Highland College UHI. Sponsored by the North

Highland Regeneration Fund (NHRF), the competition was designed to encourage and support entrepreneurial spirit amongst young people in the area. Eight contestants were selected from an initial pool of nineteen applications to pitch their ideas initially at the NHRF AGM in November to a panel of prominent local businesspeople, and again at a dedicated event on December 3rd. Between pitches, entrants received a chance to incorporate feedback, refine their ideas and improve their presentations. The contestants each gave fantastic pitches, leaving the judges hard-pressed to select a final winner. Awards included trophies designed and produced locally, along with a total of £1700 cash prize money from 5 categories: Best Presentation, Creativity and Innovation, Best Improved, Best Proposal and Best Overall, each sponsored by Chamber members. In addition, attendees also heard inspiring speeches from Ashleigh Porter-Exley, winner of BBC Young Apprentice 2012, and local entrepreneur Jill Innes of Storyboard Films, who also presented her recent work for North Highland College UHI. Caithness Chamber of Commerce recognises the valuable contribution entrepreneurs of all ages make to the local economy and strives to continue securing investment in both current and next generations to ensure a stronger, sustainable future.

Dundee & Angus Chamber, along with event partners Dundee City Council and V&A Dundee, held an event to update 150 businesses on the Waterfront and V&A projects. Mike Galloway, Director of City Development and Philip Long, Director of V&A Dundee presented updates giving insights into the developments which will see Dundee’s Waterfront regeneration show some very physical and exciting changes in 2016. The £1billion transformation of Dundee City Waterfront, which encompasses 240 hectares of development land stretching 8km alongside the River Tay, is a strategic, focused and forward looking 30 year project (2001-2031) that is propelling the city to international acclaim. The vision for the Waterfront is “To transform the City of Dundee into a world leading waterfront destination for visitors and businesses through the enhancement of its physical, economic and cultural assets.” Scotland’s First Minister Nicola Sturgeon visited the area on 18th January 2016 to inspect progress. Ms Sturgeon said: “The progress we have seen on this infrastructure work is a testament to good project management and support from the wider local community and businesses. Scotland has a proud tradition and enviable global reputation for engineering excellence, built on the skills and innovation of our people, making it an attractive location for business investment.” “The fact that this project is largely supported by local contractors, engineers and apprentices is something we should be proud of. This project itself has created hundreds of local jobs and contributes significantly to the regeneration of the city itself. “ The overall project will create some 7,000 jobs and is said to be well past its halfway point, with more than £600 million already invested. More private investment in the project, to the tune of £400 million over the next 10 to 15 years is expected, provided the surge in interest currently being seen from developers bears fruit. The new V&A Museum of Design is one of the flagship projects included in the waterfront’s regeneration.

Top posts for Dunbartonshire Chamber Members Two Dunbartonshire chamber members have been appointed to top posts within their respective industries. Robert Wilson has been made president of the Federation of Master Builders (Scotland), while Iain Robertson has joined the board of Graphic Enterprise Scotland (GES). Robert, whose painting and decorating business is in Kirkintilloch, is immediate past president of the chamber, and still sits on its board of directors. He pointed out that the industry needed 28,000 trade apprentices, including joiners, bricklayers, plumbers, painters and decorators, and roofers and plasterers. “I believe there is a bright future for apprentices in the construction industry and that more young people should consider a trade rather than going to college or university.” “In the next five to eight years, 55 per cent of tradesmen and women are due to retire which is something the industry needs to address,” he explained. This year, the Federation of Master Builders,

which is the largest construction trade organisation in Europe with 10,000 members – 600 of those in Scotland – celebrates its 75th anniversary. Builders have to meet strict membership criteria, sign up to a code of practice, have public liability insurance, and pass an independent inspection before they can join. “The Federation is about more than just displaying a badge,” Robert added, “it is a guarantee of quality.” Iain, who is managing director of JJR Print Ltd in Dumbarton, joins the GES board at a time when the industry faces many challenges: “It has become a fast moving, hi-tech environment, and I have seen vast changes since I started in the early 70s,” he said. “Coming from a smaller business, I hope to bring the experiences and concerns of my fellow small business operators to the table.” GES has represented print employers in Scotland as a federation since 1910 and is the voice of its graphic communications industry. It provides a range of services to its members including training, lobbying, and networking, on behalf of the printing

Chamber member Iain Robertson, with Graham Ellis, president of Graphic Enterprise Scotland

GES president, Graham Ellis, who is also print and planning manager with Charles Letts & Co Ltd., added: “We are pleased that Iain has brought a different range of skills and experience to the GES board. His contribution will be invaluable.”

FOCUS ON LEGAL – WJM LLP

Legal and financial planning for business owners Amongst the demands of running a successful business, it can be easy to neglect planning for the future. This is vital to ensure your hard work ultimately benefits you and your loved ones in the way you want, and doesn’t go to waste. These are the key areas we recommend business owners should address.

By Graham Murray Wright, Johnston & Mackenzie LLP

Protect your business – and yourself We insure against many different risks, covering things that are important to us against damage and loss, including our premises, our homes, our cars, our appliances, electronic devices – even the chairs we sit on! But many of us fail to insure the most valuable asset of all – ourselves. Consider the effect on your business, and your family, if you were to fall ill or die unexpectedly. Would it continue to function, pay salaries, debts and have money to hire a replacement for you, or potentially buy out your share of the business? Insurance cover can be put in place that would provide a lump sum when your business and family need it most. This can be relatively inexpensive, and can be structured so that the right people receive the right amount of funds at the right time.

Will and Power of Attorney Having a Will is especially important for business owners. Don’t assume that your share in the business or other assets will pass to whom you would want without a Will, and additional delays in having an executor appointed could jeopardise the business. It is important that your adviser understands the structure of your business and assets, and your future plans, so that your Will and any other legal arrangements don’t conflict.

CLIENT CENTRIC A ‘Business Will’ is also necessary determine what happens to the business and liabilities on the death or incapacity of a co-owner. This incorporates documents such as the articles of association/partnership agreement and option agreements (usually backed by suitable insurance) to address the exit strategy on the death of a co-owner, and allow the surviving owners to buy out the deceased. Appointing a Power of Attorney to manage your affairs (including your business) if you are unable to do so personally is also essential. Having a Power of Attorney ensures that your business can continue to operate and your family are provided for should you be temporarily incapacitated.

Financial Planning & Pensions Financial planning is essential for all business owners. Make time to review the best way of extracting profits from your business, particularly in view of forthcoming tax changes to dividends which may increase

the tax liability for many. Consider also when you want to retire and how you will fund your retirement. Check that you are paying enough into your pension (if you have one) and that it is invested wisely, and consider how recent and forthcoming changes in legislation will affect you. High earners will soon see their annual allowance restricted further, and the lifetime allowance, currently £1.25million will reduce to £1million from April 2016, and an increasing number of people will be affected and should be taking action. A thorough pension review before the end of the current tax year is strongly recommended.

Succession Planning Family businesses have their own unique challenges, and while these issues affect family businesses, they are invariably more complex. If you would like to pass the business on to the next generation of the family, or if as a member of the next generation you aspire to be in ownership in the future, it’s never too early to benefit from WJM’s combined wealth planning and family business expertise.

80 business representatives gathered to celebrate local success at Moray Chamber of Commerce’s first annual award lunch. Held during Moray Business Week on Wednesday 4th November at Gordon Castle Walled Garden, guests were advised how these new awards were essential to complement the business types in Moray. The first award of the day was the Most Promising Enterprise Award, sponsored by Business Gateway. The winner of this award was last year’s Highly Commended business at the annual awards dinner and the judges were delighted to see that Pinz Bowling Ltd had executed all of their plans for growth that they had included in their application in 2014 and then some. The second award, SME of the Year, is a significant award because Moray is 99% small and medium enterprises so an award to celebrate them is essential. Sponsored by Johnston Carmichael Chartered Accountants and Business Advisors, it was Pozzi Ltd who scooped up the first award of its kind. David Robertson, of Pozzi Ltd. has grown a Moray brand with a group of 5 companies after taking over his parent’s newsagent. LUFTHANSA

Lufthansa – leading the way for Scottish travellers With a total of 45 flights a week from two airports the full service airlines in the Lufthansa Group (Lufthansa and Brussels Airlines) continue to lead the way for Scottish travellers.

A combined total of over 436,000 passengers travelling in and out of the country last year proved once again that discerning travellers appreciate the way Lufthansa has responded to the challenges of the travel market in the face of ever-increasing competition from low-cost airlines. To maintain the leading position in the market Lufthansa must be better than anyone else in terms of product, service and reliability. Lufthansa services recently recorded the best figures for punctuality in its history with over 85% of all flights leaving Frankfurt and Munich within 15 minutes of scheduled departure time. As well as providing direct links from Aberdeen and Edinburgh to Frankfurt and Brussels the services also offer the country’s quickest and easiest onward connections. Lufthansa’s network of over 280 destinations in 80 countries worldwide includes around 60 of the world’s key oil and energy markets in Europe, Africa, the Middle East, Asia and the Americas.

Lufthansa also continues to enhance the onboard experience for customers. In addition the traditional economy, business and some first class cabins the large number of Scottish passengers who take onward connections now have the added option of a high quality premium economy product on Lufthansa long-haul services. The new seat is wider and can be tilted further back so has increased personal space by about half compared to Economy. A separate wide armrest for each seat and a centre console between the seats also ensure extra privacy. The adjustable headrest can be folded at the sides and gives comfortable support. Height adjustable footrests from the second row and - for design reasons - leg supports with integrated footrest in the front row provide additional comfort. SCOTTISH MANUFACTURING ADVISORY SERVICE

Opportunities to make a real step change in 2016

If you’re a manufacturer you will know that to be successful you need to be as competitive as possible. But how does the business all come together to help make this happen? Lindsay Branston, Business Development Manager at the Scottish Manufacturing Advisory Service, outlines these opportunities. Are you optimistic about manufacturing in Scotland? Yes I definitely am. There’s certainly been recognition from all quarters about how important a vibrant manufacturing sector is to the economy. Scottish manufactured goods make up over 60% of Scottish exports and we know that this export performance is a bellweather for the health of the overall economy. In Scotland there is a focus on premium, quality and provenance and we have strong sectors such as aerospace, automotive, chemicals and food and drink to name but a few. Manufacturing has a huge role to play. Generally, Scotland’s manufacturing sector is not as productive as our European and global neighbours. To be competitive in the global economy we need to be as productive as possible and have a relentless focus on continuous improvement and excellence.

What are the biggest opportunities for change? All sectors have their own opportunities for growth and specific challenges. But there is one generic theme for me, and it’s all to do with people. Since I joined the SMAS team 6 years ago I’ve seen a real shift in the focus of

Business Scotland

14

our work, from solely operational efficiency to combining business improvements with organisational and culture change. Companies used to talk about tactical problem solving projects using Lean or Six Sigma to address very specific issues. While this still plays an important role, that’s the easy bit! The real challenge is addressing the underlying culture in the organisation and its impact on performance. If this bit is ignored, operational improvements will not be optimised or sustained. We know that 70% of continuous improvement programmes will fail if companies don’t take its most valuable asset – its people - on the journey. Although embarking on cultural and behavioural change within your business may be daunting, the potential rewards are high.

So how do companies practically do this? Continuous improvement must be seen as a long term journey. Excellence needs to be instilled right across a manufacturing business, from the shop floor, offices and wider supply chain. This approach releases the full potential of employees and can allow a business to transform.

However this can seem quite daunting! Which is why, to further support this approach, Scottish Enterprise has just launched a new Business Improvement Academy.

How does the Academy Work? The Academy is designed to combine business improvement tools such as Lean with practical ways of addressing cultural and behavioural change. It involves the business leaders, as well as those who have responsibility for creating and delivering the changes. And the approach is a mixture of workshop based learning with practical one to one support at a company’s premises. This approach creates people and businesses that are more capable of delivering sustainable business improvement and ultimately more completive businesses.

Get In Touch For more information on how we can work with you to support your business in 2016 please get in touch via the website www.scottishmas.co.uk or calling the team on 0845 607 8787

Business Improvement Academy The Business Improvement Academy is designed to support ambitious businesses that recognise the need to engage with the concept of sustainable continuous improvement by combining improvement tools and techniques with cultural and behavioural change. The guiding principles of the Academy are: • Continuous Improvement combined with Behavioural Change – tailored to participant’s own business improvement project • Uses Active Learning Techniques – supported by experienced practitioners • Focuses on Sustainable Change – embedding the learning to deliver future business benefits • Leadership Excellence – practical improvement and embedding of leadership skills • Business Excellence – improving the competitiveness of business • Engagement – encouraging continuous improvement through engaging with others • The Academy works with both the leaders in the business and those who have responsibility for enabling change and delegates must commit to the full 11 day programme which will be spread over 3-4 months. The Academy is open to applications from manufacturing and non-manufacturing businesses. There is an investment of £450 plus VAT per person, payable in advance. If you have the ambition to drive significant improvements forward (process and behavioural) within your business contact the team to find out more. 0845 607 8787 www.scottishmas.co.uk “The Academy is a great concept for any company trying to improve their business. How to engage people through the use of lean tools is the most difficult part of changing your business but this training academy has great ideas on how to achieve this. If you want to improve your business then using this academy would be a big step in the right direction.” Eddie Lennox, Amer Sports

Ministry of Defence’s Defence’s Silver Awards Dinner Twenty-three employers from across Scotland were treated to a glittering evening reception in The Great Hall of Edinburgh Castle, on Thursday 3rd December to celebrate the Awards. The Reserve Forces Employer Awards Dinner hosted and organised jointly by Lowland and Highland Reserve Forces’ and Cadets’ Associations, was to award employers for their supportive attitude towards the Armed Forces and their personnel over the last twelve months. The main part of the evening, was an opportunity to publicly acknowledge employers in Scotland who support the United Kingdom’s Armed Forces by employing reservists, veterans, disabled

veterans, Cadet Force Adult Instructors or the spouses of members of the Armed Forces. The Employer Recognition Scheme is awarded at three levels: The Bronze award can be gained by signing an electronic pledge on line. The Gold award is presented nationally in London but the Silver awards presented on this occasion are decided regionally. Employers can be nominated on line by anyone who believes that the company or organisation satisfies the criteria. Once nominated a regional board determines which of the nominations will go forward to receive the award. In Scotland a total of twenty-six were made this year, however not all were able to accept the award at this reception. Assistant Chief of Defence Staff (Reserves And Cadets), Major General John Crackett CB TD, who’s last full time job was running

the second largest electricity company in the UK, Central Networks, presented employers with their Silver Award certificates on behalf of the Ministry of Defence. In his speech he spoke of the value of reservists in the civilian workplace and the additional skills and training that they bring to employers through their military service.

and development of skills including communication and decision-making – all essential to successful companies. As well as these soft skills, the reserves carry out considerable training that is readily transferable to the civilian workplace, such as driving licence acquisition, health and Safety training and a plethora of other hard skills.

“But employers are a key factor in whether this will be successful” he explained, acknowledging the triple dilemma for each Reservist “of sometimes conflicting demands from his reserve service, his employment and his home life.”

Congratulating the employers for their awards, Major General John Crackett, concluded the ceremony by thanking the businesses who have been such a great support to the MOD and requested that they spread the word:

Support from employers is vital to those members of their staff serving with the Reserves. Companies gain a great deal from employing reservists on their staff such as training in leadership and teamwork

“We are determined to have a mature, open dialogue with our employers and develop new relationships; opening up communications to improve understanding of each sides commitment.”

The employers represented most sectors of Scottish Business and included both the public and private sectors. The following employers were presented with awards: Bond Offshore Helicopters

Chamber’s annual celebrations

It was an incredible evening on the 2nd of December at the Hilton Glasgow as over 500 business leaders from across Scotland came together to SCC’s Annual Business Address. We began the evening with a welcome address. It truly was one of our best as we heard from SCC and BCC Chair Nora Senior who discussed the successes of the last year and what SCC will be doing in the coming years to promote Scotland’s economic growth.

In addition to her call for a push for more international trade, Ms Senior also said that the SCC wanted to see increased e-commerce, more to be done to bridge the gap between business and education and support for getting more women into work. We also head from First Minister Nicola Sturgeon who outlined the Scottish Government’s plans for the future and how business can work with Government to build a successful economic policy.

“I passionately believe that we need to work harder to get more Scottish businesses

We then heard from our keynote speaker, Nando’s founder, Robert Brozin. He shared his “entrepreneurial journey” of how the Johannesburg-based restaurant chain of Portuguese chicken dishes had become a global brand in the 28 years since it was founded in 1987. Both Robert and Nicola poured praise onto the Chamber of Commerce Network in Scotland and

commented on the incredible passion and dedication of the network. The night was closed off by SCC CEO Liz Cameron OBE who gave the final vote of thanks to all the attendees highlighting the incredible work and commitment the Chamber of Commerce Network show each and every day. It was one of the biggest business dinners in Scotland and provided a great opportunity for networking and learning from some of the country’s top business leaders. We will be hosting another Business Address in 2016 so get in touch if you would like to come along! We raised over £5,000 for our two featured charities over the course of the night, MND Scotland and Goodbye Malaria. Thanks to everyone for donating on the night! Half of us will be diagnosed with cancer at some time in our lives. In Scotland each year 30,000 people hear the devastating news that they have cancer. Business rates reviewed? Garry Clark

Economic Development Intelligence Unit

When announcing the detail of his Draft Budget for 2016-17 to the Scottish Parliament in December 2015, the Deputy First Minister, John Swinney MSP, made a clear and welcome commitment to review the Scottish system of business rates. Specifically, he said: “I share with Scottish business a recognition that our system of business rates must minimise barriers to investment, be responsive to economic conditions and support long-term economic growth and investment. I can therefore announce that we will launch a review of the non-domestic rates system in Scotland.” Those of us who regularly keep track of proceedings in the Scottish Parliament will have experienced just a touch of déjà vu at this point. Three years earlier, Mr Swinney had this to say about business rates: “I have committed to embark on a review of business rates in advance of the next revaluation to provide the best support that we can for business. I am pleased to confirm today the publication of our business

rates consultation, which will provide a comprehensive and fundamental review of the rating system.” So what became of the 2012 consultation on business rates? Well, for a start the consultation itself left much to be desired. Far from setting the context for a ‘comprehensive and fundamental review’, its introduction asserted that: “Scotland is already the most competitive place to do business in the UK due to the Scottish Government commitment to match the English business rate tax rate (poundage) and the significantly more generous rates discounts (reliefs) on offer compared to the rest of the UK.” On balance then, it appeared that the Scottish Government believed it already had its policies on business rates just about right already. Despite the efforts of Scottish Chambers of Commerce and others, the 2012 consultation resulted in very little material change to the system of business rates in Scotland, other than the restriction of some reliefs previously available to businesses, such as those on empty properties. The fact remains that the revenues raised by business rates in Scotland have increased by 40% since 2010. In the light of this history, should we believe the Scottish Government now when it has

promised again to review business rates? I’m inclined to give them the benefit of the doubt for two reasons. Firstly, an announcement of a review this close to a Scottish Parliamentary Election ought to mean that the proposal should be included as a commitment in the Scottish National Party’s manifesto and, secondly, the changing landscape of taxation in Scotland and the devolution of additional tax powers ought to make reform of business rates a far more realistic prospect than it was in the past. The political and constitutional dynamic in Scotland has changed distinctly since 2012. We have been through a referendum and also two Scotland Bills, each of which are delivering tranches of new tax powers for the Scottish Parliament. The debate on local government finance has also been reopened, with the Commission on Local Tax Reform having recently recommended the reform of the current system of Council Tax. All of these factors conspire to create a real opportunity to rethink business rates and to design and implement a fair system of business tax which is responsive to economic conditions and to the individual circumstances of the businesses which pay it. Ultimately, this must form part of a fiscal strategy aimed at supporting investment and delivering lasting economic and business growth.

Building the future – SQA and Morrison Construction

SQA is committed to improving the prospects for young people in Scotland by helping them gain the qualifications to succeed in today’s world. By working with specific sectors, industries or businesses, we can tailor and adapt those qualifications to ensure they are relevant and useful. Morrison Construction have adopted SQA Employability Awards as part of their corporate social responsibility strategy. In late 2013, Morrison Construction was awarded the contract to construct the new Newbattle Community High School in Midlothian. Alice Harley, Skills Manager at Morrison Construction, said: “Since being awarded the contract, we have worked in partnership with Midlothian Council to offer school pupils at Newbattle the opportunity

to complete our dedicated Employability and Construction programme. “We engaged with the School to discuss a range of community benefit opportunities that have the capacity to support both the staff and pupils. Our Employability and Construction programme is one of a clutch of activities and programmes that focus on education and careers.” The programme is mapped to SQA’s Employability Award at SCQF level 4, and it provides an introduction to the world of work, focusing on generic employability skills and attitudes relevant to all areas of employment. Alice continued: “Bridging the gap between education and employment is crucial to addressing the current skills shortage and to aid sustainable

economic recovery. We provide young people with a structured and direct link to industry and are committed to having a positive influence on the future generation of construction workers. “The programme incorporates our staff’s first-hand knowledge and experience of the Construction industry, Welfare to Work and training sectors, and blends practical learning and coursework so that the participants can appreciate how their knowledge can be applied in real life situations.” Participants undertook work experience placements at several of our live construction sites, allowing them to gain valuable first-hand knowledge and experience of a live build project.

Morrison Construction delivers significant community and educational benefits across Scotland. To ensure the long term success of our business goes beyond economic sustainability, the work we do in the community supplements our society as a whole. Morrison Construction’s employer-led ‘Employability and Construction’ programme directly supports young people in developing a wide range of workplace skills. We support the ‘Developing Scotland’s Young Workforce’ agenda to improve the prospects of young people.

Similar programmes are happening all over Scotland. SQA Employability Awards or similar SQA Wider Achievement Awards can be delivered and assessed over a period which is most appropriate for centres and learners. Dr Janet Brown, SQA Chief Executive, said: “SQA’s Wider Achievement awards help candidates to identify, develop and enhance skills that can help them move on to the next phase of their learning.” “This is of particular benefit when considering the recent recommendations of the Commission for Developing Scotland’s Young Workforce, which wants to make stronger connections between the skills and knowledge young people have and the competencies employers require, give young people practical experience of the workplace and build lasting relationships between schools and employers.”

Education in the workplace – what does the future hold? With Scotland operating in an increasingly competitive global marketplace, a skilled and motivated workforce is more important than ever. Research by ILM* suggests that businesses are failing to capitalise on internal talent, with poor skill levels having a negative impact on 93% of UK businesses. Alarmingly, almost half (47%) of businesses felt a current lack of internal staff capability was halting the supply of effective leaders and managers through their businesses. Developing the workforce at all levels enables organisations to promote from within instead of relying on external recruitment, which can be expensive and risky. Organisations with strong internal talent plans can also reap the benefits of improved company culture and employee loyalty. The City & Guilds Group is a leader in global skills development. Its purpose is to enable

people and organisations to develop their skills for personal and economic growth. In Scotland, Modern Apprenticeships are increasingly playing a role in achieving these goals.

Learning and Earning Qualifications gained prior to a student’s first job or step on the career ladder are extremely important but why should education cease after school, college or university? The opportunity to learn and earn is an attractive prospect for ambitious young people who want to get a head start in the world of work. Apprenticeships are already shaping the workforce of tomorrow. They play a vital role in building sustainable skills, giving young people better career prospects while driving business and economic growth. Over 25,000 Modern Apprenticeships are funded in Scotland each year and that figure is expected to rise. To maintain momentum we need to be mindful of industries’ needs. A blended approach to learning – be it practical on the job training or e-learning -

will help progressive organisations engage with 21st century talent. Whereby in previous years apprenticeships were more traditionally available in the engineering, technical and construction industries, they are now being shaped across all industry sectors - as diverse as hairdressing to social care and encompassing more transferable skills like customer services and management. This all stands as evidence that there is a tangible commitment to the education and employment of today’s youth, providing them with a wealth of choice, support and career diversity.

How you can make management apprenticeships work? Partnership Approach It’s also crucial that industries in Scotland work in partnership with schools, colleges and training providers to shape relevant qualifications, assessments and meaningful work placements. By working together, we can all play a role in determining the future of the Scottish economy and becoming a stronger source of expertise on the global stage. The City & Guilds Group is made up of City & Guilds, ILM, City & Guilds Kineo and The Oxford Group and partners with more than 200 companies to develop skilled workforces, and invests in learning technologies to help people learn whenever and wherever they can. If you are considering taking on Apprentices or you are looking to embed a training and development programme, City & Guilds can help. You don’t have to be new to the workforce to reap the benefits of an apprenticeship – those over 24 and already in a role can still take advantage of the opportunities they offer. Management apprenticeships – in which apprentices learn on the job about management techniques – are on the rise. In fact, they were the third most popular choice of apprenticeship framework in 2014/15, and the number of people taking an apprenticeship in management has quadrupled since 2010, up to 43,000 in 2014/15 (from 33,000 in 2013/14). The Prime Minister has set a commitment of three million total apprenticeship starts by 2020, a big step in the goal to revolutionise the skills of the UK workforce. While the focus of apprenticeships has previously largely been on young people joining the workforce, increasingly those in management positions are able to take advantage of the opportunities that an apprenticeship offers. Over 25,000 people take on a Modern Apprenticeship every year in Scotland. There are currently three Modern Apprenticeship frameworks in management available – at levels 3, 4 and 5, and Skills Development Scotland will offer financial help for certain industries and apprenticeships. Employers who’ve

taken on MAs are positive about the experience: 96% say those who’ve undertaken a Modern Apprenticeship are more able to do their job, with improvements in productivity, staff morale, and service and product quality. Modern Apprentices are also enthusiastic about their achievements – 97% would recommend an MA to other people. According to a City & Guilds survey of companies from its Top 100 Apprenticeship Employers list, 30% of their senior management positions were filled by former apprentices. And tellingly, 89% of top managers said that if they were launching their career now, they would have started off with an apprenticeship. British Gas works with ILM to develop managers at first line level through apprenticeship programmes, running these programmes for potential managers in the contact centre, planning dispatch agents and engineering teams. They decided to focus their development at first line level as it’s the first transition from an individual role to one where staff are required to manage teams, says Neil Grant, head of British Gas Academies. Since going through the programme, 50% of staff have been promoted to first line manager level, says Grant, with an expected 70% promotion rate by the end of each programme. TRAINING AND DEVELOPMENT

Employers across Scotland are being encouraged to hire Modern Apprentices The call comes ahead of Scottish Apprenticeship Week 2016 from 29 February to 4 March. Organised by Skills Development Scotland (SDS), the campaign highlights the commitment of businesses that have decided to invest in the skills of their employees. It also showcases the successes of apprentices who have chosen to get a job, get paid and get qualified to develop their careers. Last year there were more than 25,000 new Modern Apprenticeship starts across the country, with Skills Development Scotland paying a contribution towards the cost of training Modern Apprentices on behalf of the Scottish Government. With more than 80 different types of apprenticeship available, covering everything from Providing Financial Services to Creative and Digital Media, Modern Apprenticeships now go far beyond traditional trades and offer a great career start for both men and women. For employers of all sizes looking to attract new young talent, fill vacancies or simply

plan for the future, Modern Apprenticeships offer a great way of ensuring your business has the skills it needs to grow. Three quarters of Modern Apprentice employers report improved productivity as a result of employing apprentices, while 71 per cent said Modern Apprentices improved service or product quality – so the benefits to businesses are clear. Skills Development Scotland can provide advice and support to employers to make Modern Apprenticeships work for their businesses, and employers can also post apprenticeship vacancies for free on our website – www.apprenticeships.scot It means that Scottish Apprenticeship Week is the perfect opportunity to find out more about the benefits available to your business. Last year’s Scottish Apprenticeship Week saw more than 200 events taking place right around the country, with employers joining everyone from training providers, colleges to schools and politicians in celebrating the contribution made by Modern Apprentices. Employers such as BT, Dawnfresh, Diageo, GSK and BrewDog made the promise take on more Modern Apprentices and the week received extensive media coverage from TV, print and online to social media including Twitter, LinkedIn and Facebook.

TRAINING AND DEVELOPMENT

Here’s a look at how two employers have seen their business grow with the help of Modern Apprenticeships. Former RAF aircraft engineer Darren Boothroyd has used Modern Apprenticeships to help transform his local chippie into a thriving business. After leaving the service in September 2013 the opportunity arose for Darren and his family to purchase the Fochabers Fish Bar. “My parents had a fish and chip shop when I was young so I had an insight into the business,” explained Darren. He added: “I was a qualified assessor and internal verifier for five years at RAF Lossiemouth and recognised the benefits of

working with a well-trained, knowledgeable and enthusiastic workforce. Even though it is a very different business, I knew this was the ethos I wanted to adopt.” Customer service is the main focus at the fish bar which now has three members of staff with Level 3 and level 2 qualifications, and another who is on her way to completing her Level 2 apprenticeship. Darren said: “For our staff, having a Modern Apprenticeship shows that they have something to contribute and gives them the confidence of having a national qualification and a high degree of pride in what they do. The training has paid off as the fish and chip shop has won a number of industry awards. Darren has had great support from his

family, plus regular and new customers. “The future will involve more of the same. It would be too easy to rest on our laurels. All our staff are fully aware of the standards and everyone works extremely hard to ensure they are met every day and for all our customers,” he said. Catriona Sloan, of training providers Polaris Learning, said: “The team at Fochabers Fish Bar have been a delight to work with. From the start, Darren had a clear vision of what he wanted to achieve and the Modern Apprenticeship qualifications fitted perfectly with this. We look forward to taking many more Modern Apprentices through their qualifications as the business goes from strength to strength.”

Recruiting a Modern Apprentice was a gamble that paid off for Glasgow company NS Design. Their first apprentice Jonny Campbell brought energy, enthusiasm and business benefits and is now an Apprenticeship Ambassador. Founder and Managing Director Gary Ennis believes the risk versus the rewards is an ‘easy bet’ for most employers. He cited the benefit of having Jonny to help with the business and the satisfaction of having given a young person a foot up on the career ladder. “Employers could hit the jackpot and get an enthusiastic, talented individual who, with training and mentoring, will help define the future of the business, bringing fresh new ideas and allowing them to explore business opportunities that might otherwise have gone amiss,” he said. Jonny will continue to work part time for the company while he studies for a broadcast production degree and NS

Design have employed a new Modern Apprentice, with plans to recruit another.

wants to learn more and develop their own skills.

“We are recruiting young talent that we can nurture and help mould with the exact skills we need to evolve and who are vital to our longer term success. This industry is always changing, and without fresh eyes, it’s difficult to stay at the forefront,” explained Gary.

Gary thinks a good Modern Apprentice employer wants to hire for their benefit and for that of a young person. “Modern Apprentices are there to do a professional role and bring with them opportunities and ideas to move businesses forward. A good employer will look for every learning opportunity out there, to help develop the Modern Apprentice, grow their skills and take the opportunities that will present themselves as a result,” he added.

He believes a good apprentice is someone who can follow their own initiative, be pro-active in looking for ways to grow and enhance the business, and who always

Imminent changes to pension allowances could affect you more than you think April 2016 will see two changes to the amount people can save towards their pensions without incurring a tax charge. The total tax-free savings that high earners (broadly those earning above £110,000 pa) can make each year could potentially reduce to £10,000, while the maximum total level of pension benefits which individuals can build up during their lifetime (without tax charge) will reduce for all.

throw in the question of a Scottish Rate of Income Tax and you have an extremely interesting mix. Some are definite (the two changes to tax free allowances), some are fairly certain (a change to higher rate tax relief) and some depend on a number of factors (not least how the SRIT will interact with UK tax relief on pensions).

Combine this with the pension flexibilities recently introduced and a well-publicised consultation on higher rate tax relief, then

Due to transitional arrangements, there is a window of opportunity before 5 April 2016 which will allow some people to

make a higher level of tax-free pension savings during the current tax year (up to £80,000 in some cases). While this may make sense, care is needed to make sure it does not bring with it an unwanted tax bill, now or in the future. As you might gather, the need for professional advice during this period of change is paramount.

CHAMBER NEWS

Technology improving care By Bill Magee Technology Commentator

High Quality Healthcare is so vital to each and everyone of us whether at work or leisure pursuits. It is also inextricably linked to a high performing Scottish economy. In fact any economy on the planet. With these objectives very much in mind, a new Quality Framework software digital platform devised by the Golden Jubilee National Hospital involves fully-interactive virtual dashboards that are driving up quality control and improving patient care. The Jubilee is taking digital analytics to a new level and it’s not surprising to learn that it has already attracted enquiries from as far afield as the States and China. The hospital’s work is fast becoming a model for adoption by healthcare facilities, and other organisations, around the world. Digital analytics are increasingly being harnessed by ambitious organisations looking to gain valuable insights into their data streams and make smarter decisions while achieving a better return-oninvestment.

Business Scotland

44

Nowadays, the business of analytics is light years away from mere spreadsheets, graphs and charts especially now with the advent of the cloud and virtualisation. They offer the potential for a more seamless, scalable and flexible online answer and in Jubilee’s case, its enterprise analytics solution is enabling a staff of several hundred, including directors, clinicians, doctors, consultants, nurses, and administrative staff to easily analyse patient care, staffing, and performance targets on their iPad devices. Also underlying and previously unknown patterns and interactions between patients and the hospital, representing the more unexpected and harder-to-predict factors that life can throw up at an organisation. Chief Executive Jill Young told the Holyrood 6th Cloud Computing conference, that I chaired, how the hospital’s vision has now turned into a reality as she highlighted an organisation that believes in continuous improvement in quality, research and innovation in healthcare. The Jubilee is now better able to understand and react appropriately to ensure that patients have a safer, high quality experience within the hospital. Any member of the Jubilee team - from nurse, clinician, doctor and manager - can easily see at a glance and in as near real time, trends, correlation or impacts of multiple indicators. Like sickness, training, infection rates. Along with highlighting

areas for improvement of quality of care and patient outcomes. Regularly updated graphics on hospital performance, in such vital areas including patient care plus cleanliness and efficiencies, are installed in public areas and readily accessible giving updates on how the hospital is meetings its targets. Accessed at a touch of a button with potential to view an individual ward, hospital, board or across NHSScotland, three key programmes of governance, quality indicators and a values-based workforce are matched by key indicators in quality, safety, performance and patient experience. The patients themselves have also worked with the hospital to establish the framework - what Jill described as a journey with “many twists and turns” so the enterprise analytics chosen had to be one that “that fitted the Jubilee’s complex needs and will evolve with us.” Board committees review employee performance and make decisions improving management and effectiveness while hospital administrators can drill into the top 30-40 quality indicators in great detail, making informed decisions to enhance the patient experience whilst being looked after at the hospital. It is easy to see how the Jubilee’s Quality Framework is fast becoming a model for the entire NHS.

MORAY ECONOMIC PARTNERSHIP

Enterprise Park Forres

Moray – battling back from adversity Sometimes, good things can come out of adversity. That has been the case in Moray over the past six years as it battles back from a major blow to its economy.

Moray has a number of thriving sectors, not least food and drink and engineering, and also a growing visitor economy providing development opportunities for hotel and tourism businesses.

Through a remarkable level of co-operation between private and public organisations, Moray has moved from adversity in October 2010 when the MOD announced the closure of RAF Kinloss and threatened closure of RAF Lossiemouth to an approach that emphasises Ambition in 2016.

The area has a growing reputation in developing digital and online technologies to improve service delivery and efficiency. Although these strands have emerged independently, they are complementary and have arisen because of the unique health ecosystem which puts Moray in a strong position to develop, pilot and test comprehensive digital healthcare models.

The catalyst has been the Moray Economic Partnership, whose members work to support business growth and inward investment, promoting Moray as a great place to live, work and visit. Partnership members include Moray Council, Highlands and Islands Enterprise, Moray College UHI, Skills Development Scotland, Moray Chamber of Commerce, NHS Grampian, Highlands and Islands Transportation Partnership (Hitrans), Moray Strategic Business Forum, Cairngorms National Park Authority and Third Sector Interface Moray (tsiMoray). The partners all play a part in developing skills and training, culture and tourism, development, transportation, inward investment and business growth. They have plenty to work with because Moray offers a well-educated, skilled workforce with low staff turnover and high retention rates. However, the area has access to an even wider labour pool as there are 236,000 people within a one hour drive of Elgin. Moray has 85% of its working age population in employment, higher than the Scottish average (80%).

Moray is also emerging as a prime location in research and development for the life science and digital healthcare sector.

Leading edge digital health solutions are being developed in the Moray area, strengthened by a growing cluster and critical mass of activity along the A96 Inverness to Elgin “corridor”, which can now be seen as one of the world’s first true digital healthcare clusters. This comprises more than 40 organisations, including, Non-government Organisations, health boards, academia and commercial companies such as OpenBrolly, who design healthcare apps for mobile devices, and international IT company Atos, both of which are located at the EPF. The Enterprise Park Forres is home to diverse businesses across a range of sectors. The park provides a thriving environment with a unique range of high quality units, land development opportunities and an on-site business and innovation centre, Horizon Scotland.

The Alexander Graham Bell Centre is designed to support the work being carried out in digital healthcare in the Moray region. The £6.5 million project has created a “centre of excellence” located at the Moray College University of the Highlands and Islands (UHI) campus in Elgin. This collaborative hub will provide opportunities and facilities for new business and research, creating important and strong links between the private sector, medical practitioners and academia. Moray is also a natural location to establish an engineering business. With its long history as an engineering and fabrication base for the oil and gas and distillation industries, it is perfectly placed for diversification into the renewable energy supply chains. Electrical and mechanical engineering skills are highly developed in the local workforce, including those making the transition from armed forces to civilian life. Moray is at the front of the rollout of superfast broadband giving access to over 90% of premises by the end of 2016. STRATHCLYDE BUSINESS SCHOOL

Take the Strathclyde route to a top MBA

Widely acknowledged for its innovation in business and management education, Strathclyde Business School (SBS) has demonstrated pioneering developments across its undergraduate and postgraduate teaching. Our enterprising spirit has taken the Strathclyde MBA into many new countries via the establishment of eight international centres. Since we first introduced a one year full time MBA programme to the UK in 1966, we have continued to innovate and update our MBA offering to reflect current business practice. 2016 celebrates the 50th anniversary of our full time MBA and the 40th anniversary of our part-time MBA programme. These milestones coincide with the recent £23.2 million transformation of the business school to locate departments in a single business quarter and provide state-of-the-art accommodation for staff and students. Students who choose our MBA programme can opt for full-time, part-time or flexible learning study options. Our full time programme is studied over 12 months in Glasgow amongst a group of international peers and involves nine months of participation in classes, group work and personal development processes and three months for the MBA project. Our part time programme is ideal for anyone who wants to fit the MBA programme around their career and this option is offered through evening class twice weekly with four

compulsory weekend schools spread over the period of study. Typically, part timers complete their degree in around three years. A major strength of the part time route is that course members can investigate issues at work through the various classes and put what they learn on the MBA into practice immediately. We also offer a flexible learning option which allows individuals to direct the pace of their own studies while providing the level of support that an internationally recognised school can offer. The Flexible Learning MBA offers a balance between self-study and group interaction, and we encourage peer interaction and group learning through workshops and seminars which gives those on the programme the opportunity to meet with their peers. In addition to this, Strathclyde Business School and William Grant & Sons have been partners in a successful invitation-only customised MBA programme since 2011. The MBA25 programme – so named because of its limit of 25 participants – is led by William Grant & Sons but individuals from other hand-picked companies have been invited on to the programme each year.

MBA25 has the backbone of established Strathclyde MBA subjects such as strategy, strategic management and entrepreneurship as part of the curriculum, and there is a strong focus on leadership and innovation as well as the addition of two distinctive elective classes created specifically for the MBA25 – Luxury Brand Marketing and Family Business. To discuss your MBA options, please call us on 0141 553 6118/6119 or email sbs.admissions@strath.ac.uk. Whichever route you choose, there are a range of scholarships available – for full-time the closing date is May 31st 2016, and there are scholarships on offer until September 1st 2016 for part time and flexible learning routes. A triple-accredited business school that’s around the corner... and around the world

Our MBA and Masters programmes are consistently ranked among the best in the UK – and around the world. And with a decade of triple accreditation perhaps that’s no great surprise. This year, we celebrate 50 years of our full time MBA and 40 years of our part time MBA and, as Scotland’s number one business school, we continue to introduce innovative business programmes and new content to our MBA to suit the demands of an evolving business world. COVER STORY – SCOTTISH PARLIAMENT ELECTION 2016

Politician’s pitch to business In May 2016 the Scottish Parliament will hold its 5th election. Crucially however this will be the first election in which the Scottish Government will have new additional powers as a result of the Scotland Bill 2012. The next Scottish Parliament will acquire an unprecedented array of powers over taxation in Scotland and the role of Scotland’s politicians will become far more significant in business and economic terms. As our MSPs gain more power over how revenues are raised as well as spent, they will need to be acutely aware of the full implications of using their new tax powers, particularly

within the context of the overall fiscal regime of the United Kingdom. Understandably businesses in Scotland are taking a much closer look at this election, and the parties have a much greater responsibility to ensure the needs and voices of the business community are listened to. Ensuring Scotland is competitive, innovative and attractive as a business hub is crucial for our success. We asked the 5 party leaders in Scotland to make their pitch to the Scottish business community. Here’s what they have to say….

COVER STORY – SCOTTISH PARLIAMENT ELECTION 2016

Nicola Sturgeon MSP Leader of the Scottish National Party @NicolaSturgeon

I want Scotland to be the most competitive place in the UK to do business and to invest. Central to the approach of the SNP in government to increasing sustainable economic growth is the recognition that promoting competitiveness and addressing inequality are important interdependent ambitions. We want to tackle inequality because it promotes growth. Inequality is a barrier to people achieving their potential, diluting skills and eroding talent. Creating a fairer society is essential to the sustained, longterm prosperity of the Scottish economy. We are proud of our record of achieving for businesses. Since the SNP came into office the number of businesses in Scotland has gone up by over 90,000. We are offering the most competitive business rates package anywhere in the UK, and our Small Business Bonus Scheme is helping 100,000 small businesses by reducing or removing entirely their business rates. Recent figures have also shown that Scottish spending on enterprise and economic development is double the UK level, highlighting our commitment to helping businesses access new markets and fostering innovation. The SNP are committed to building on this record in the next Scottish Parliament, if re-elected. Our Economic Strategy is based around four ‘I’s: investment, innovation, inclusive growth and internationalisation. Internationalisation is a key focus for the SNP in government, and we will be replacing the existing Trade and Investment Strategy before Parliament rises in March. The SNP recognise the importance of supporting businesses in Scotland to expand and grow into new markets, as well as retaining our presence in the EU and other existing markets. International exports from Scotland are up 40% since 2007 but we know there’s more to do. By encouraging internationalisation we can promote Scotland as a brand, increasing knowledge of our produce

and services internationally and securing major international cultural and sporting events. We will continue to encourage international expansion in order to meet our target of increasing exports by 50% by 2017. We will also continue to make the case for Scotland remaining a member of the EU. Our membership of the EU supports hundreds of thousands of jobs in Scotland and is a major destination for Scotland’s exports. The SNP in Government have also committed to establish International Innovation and Investment Hubs to encourage businesses to expand internationally. Our pilot hubs will be established in London, Brussels and Dublin to link in with our key markets of Europe, the Republic of Ireland and international opportunities from London. Under an SNP Government Scotland is also gaining a reputation as a tech hub, with companies such as Skyscanner flourishing and achieving global success. We recognise that growth in these areas will also require an increase in skilled, trained individuals. In order to meet this demand we are promoting digital skills in our education systems. We have increased the supply of modern apprentices, and increased the number of places available for digital courses in higher and further education. We are also investing in superfast broadband, with a target to provide access to broadband to 95 per cent of properties across Scotland by the end of 2017.

As First Minister I have pledged to put equality at the heart of my government. We are supporting the Careerwise programme, which encourages women to take up modern apprenticeships in careers related to science, technology, engineering and maths. We are also putting tackling gender segregation as an important part of our implementation plan for developing Scotland’s young workforce. Tackling gender inequality in our workforce is just one part of our drive to promote inclusive growth. Working in partnership with business to improve gender inequality, as well as other pillars in our Business Pledge, we are helping to support a fairer, stronger, and more prosperous Scotland. We are encouraging businesses to sign up in return for support from the Scottish Government and its agencies, such as Scottish Enterprise and Highlands and Islands Enterprise. We are seeing positive outcomes from our efforts, and I am proud that Scotland now has more than 430 Living Wage-accredited employers, putting us in touching distance of our target of having over 500 businesses as Living Wage accredited employers by March 2016. Investing in people through the Living Wage will lead to an engaged and productive workforce, further benefitting businesses and Scotland alike. We want to keep Scotland moving forward. If re-elected, an SNP Scottish Government will continue to do everything we can to deliver sustainable economic growth, and a nation that is prosperous and fair.

COVER STORY – SCOTTISH PARLIAMENT ELECTION 2016

Kezia Dugdale MSP Leader of the Scottish Labour Party @kdugdalemsp

I have promised that at the elections in May Scottish Labour will put forward the most pro-enterprise manifesto ever. Our approach to business and enterprise will be based around four key pillars: · Connectivity · Productivity · Simplicity · Certainty Scottish Labour wants to see investment in new technology and internet connectivity as a national infrastructure priority. That will unlock the potential for huge productivity gains, for access and routes to markets, as well as access to government services, and opportunities for education and communities. Productivity is one of the great missed opportunities of the last decade, and the SNP Government have to accept responsibility for that. In that time the productivity gap between Scotland and our major competitors has reached as high as 25%. A recent report from the Scottish Council for Development and Industry stated that increasing Scotland’s total factor productivity by even 0.1% per year could boost GDP by 1.3%, and in turn, employment by 11,000 and tax revenue by £400m a year.” As someone who wants to see business in Scotland flourish to create jobs and deliver world class public services tackling Scotland’s productivity problem needs to be a priority. That’s why a Scottish Labour government will refocus the efforts of government agencies like Scottish Enterprise to tackle the productivity problem, we will commit

to investing more in basic science and, research and development. Turning to the third pillar of simplicity, business in Scotland today faces a myriad of challenges, interacting with government should not be one of them. That’s why Scottish Labour is committed to a Digital Services Bill, making Scotland a world leader in e-government to revolutionise the relationship between government and business, bringing all Scottish Government interactions with business within a single online presence. That is something that should have been started years ago. After nearly a decade in Government and with a majority in parliament it isn’t clear why the SNP haven’t delivered it. As soon as Scottish Labour has the chance to do so we will make it a priority. The final pillar of our approach to business is certainty. Businesses across Scotland have told us that the system of business rates is no longer fit for purpose. At the last revaluation there were more than 67,000 appeals, that’s a clear sign that the system isn’t sufficiently transparent and isn’t providing the certainty that business needs. In fact there can’t be many aspects of

business where we would tolerate that level of uncertainty from suppliers or business partners. We shouldn’t have to tolerate it from government. That is why Scottish Labour will reform the system to deliver greater certainty for business. I firmly believe that our most important, and neglected economic policy is education. I’ve put cutting the attainment gap in our schools at the heart of my leadership of Scottish Labour. Why should business care? Because cutting the gap between the richest and the rest isn’t just a social and moral imperative – it’s about the future health of our economy, ensuring that our young people have the skills they need to access the jobs of tomorrow, so Scotland can be a home to the industries of the future. With the new powers coming to Scotland developing economic growth is now a key issue in Scottish Parliament elections. We have access to tax powers and borrowing powers to go alongside preexisting responsibilities over education, housing, and infrastructure. Developing a stronger, fairer economy is now firmly the responsibility of Holyrood. That means bold policy and clear thinking from Scotland’s political parties.

COVER STORY – SCOTTISH PARLIAMENT ELECTION 2016

Ruth Davidson MSP Leader of the Scottish Conservative and Unionist Party @RuthDavidsonMSP

Businesses are the lifeblood of our economy. They provide jobs and economic security to millions of Scots. They help fund our public services. They push society forward by acting as drivers of change. I want to see a Scotland that is unashamedly pro-business. One which doesn’t just make life easier for existing companies; but one which is determined to attract jobs and back new starts. That’s why I appointed a former head of the CBI, Sir Iain McMillan, to head up the Independent Commission on Competitive and Fair Taxation and why my door is always open to business leaders from across the country. This year is a pivotal one for Scotland. Put simply, the Scottish Government elected in May will have more financial powers than any previous devolved administration. This promises to transform Holyrood from a spending theatre to a Chamber where we will see a real debate about economic priorities. Given this environment, the challenge for political parties is to set out how they intend to harness these new powers to boost economic growth. As far as the Scottish Conservatives are concerned, the priority must be to grow our tax base, expand our economy, and create more high value jobs. None of that will happen if we throw up a warning sign over Scotland saying “higher taxes here”. This applies not just to the tax paid by individuals, but those paid by businesses too. I am acutely aware that business rates continue to be a source of concern for many companies – of all sizes – and that’s why we are committed to reviewing their structure. Rather than view successful enterprises as targets for ever higher rates, I want to embrace the business sector and work with leaders to improve the system.

That’s why the Scottish Conservatives want to expand the reach of Community Broadband Scotland, so it can support businesses, particularly those out-with the central belt. That’s why we are determined to invest more money into our college sector. This last point is crucial. I have lost count of the number of conversations I’ve had with leading businesspeople about the skills gap in this country.

Our ambition should be for Scotland to become the skills capital of Europe, but if we are to achieve this aim then our colleges must be properly funded.

While John Swinney talks the talk, his actions tell a different story. Take this year’s Scottish Budget: on one hand he announces a review of business rates, on the other he imposes a doubling of the Large Business Supplement. Everyone recognises that firms need to pay their way, but this measure will cost major Scottish companies an additional £130 million. At a time when the economic environment remains challenging, this does little to support growth. As far as I see it, if we are serious about supporting industry then we need to do all we can to make life easier for firms, not harder.

That’s why I find it staggering that college places have been cut by over 150,000 since 2007. Reducing opportunities for young people and narrowing the talent pool for business. Our ambition should be for Scotland to become the skills capital of Europe, but if we are to achieve this aim then our colleges must be properly funded. If we fail to do so, then we will struggle in the battle for new jobs and fresh investment; a battle increasingly wrought with our nearest neighbours. The Northern Powerhouse, so assiduously championed by George Osborne and the UK Government, continues to stride forward. We need to match that drive.

Scotland certainly has the potential to do so – the work coming out of CodeBase, now the UK’s largest tech incubator, is evidence enough of that. But it will not happen of its own accord. Scottish business will only flourish if we hone our competitiveness and create the right environment for success. That’s what the Scottish Conservatives are determined to see and it’s these principles that will inspire our forthcoming manifesto.

COVER STORY – SCOTTISH PARLIAMENT ELECTION 2016

Willie Rennie MSP LeaderoftheScottishLiberalDemocrats @willie_rennie

Scotland has always been a country of innovators and both new businesses and more established ones are already leading the way in key areas like food and drink manufacturing, information technology, design, gaming and much more. There should be no barriers in the way of our ambitions and we must strive high to play our part in the global economy. But new businesses need to know central government won’t stand in their way as they seek to grow and established ones need to know there is a helping hand available through what have been incredibly challenging recent years. Scottish Liberal Democrats want to support growth on the ground meaning local investment and encouraging the sharing of local knowledge and best practice. And in this digital age, we know the mobile and broadband infrastructure, particularly in the North East and Highlands and Islands, just isn’t up to scratch. But we’ll keep pushing for all Scots to have access to super-fast broadband so geographical barriers can be broken down and businesses can be run from anywhere. The oil and gas industry remains an incredibly important part of Scotland’s economy and supporting it and the businesses linked both directly and indirectly to it should be one of the top priorities for both the Scottish and UK governments. That’s why we support City

Region Deals and are calling for one for Aberdeen, which would unlock funding for major infrastructure improvements to drive down business costs and promote innovation. But let’s not forget about what agriculture, energy and construction bring to the Scottish economy. By investing in other sectors we will be ensuring the country has a broad base on which it can thrive. Food manufacturing is booming, with the most recent export figures showing a huge growth spurt in overseas sales in 2015 thanks to over 800 businesses contributing billions. Scotland has a proud record as an exporting nation but in comparison there has been little recent growth in terms of drink exports. New producers, breweries and distilleries are popping up everywhere and we all know what the whisky industry brings to this country. An important role we can play is pushing for the hurdles Scottish businesses face to be removed.

This includes ensuring planning systems are not cumbersome and slow, and taking action on the failure of business rates to recognise the challenges of establishing an operation which does not see an immediate return on investment. The future for Scottish businesses is bright, as is our vision for the country and the people who live and work in it. To create a stronger economy we think more should be done for businesses. We want to equip them with the resources they need, cut the red tape find new ways to get money to small businesses starved of finance. The priority of the next Scottish Government must be to support the creation of new businesses and jobs, and equip every person with the skills and ambition to reach their potential. Whichever party forms that government, the Scottish Liberal Democrats will be standing ready to support businesses in this country.

in this digital age, we know the mobile and broadband infrastructure, particularly in the North East and Highlands and Islands, just isn’t up to scratch. But we’ll keep pushing for all Scots to have access to super-fast broadband so geographical barriers can be broken down and businesses can be run from anywhere. Business Scotland

COVER STORY – SCOTTISH PARLIAMENT ELECTION 2016

Patrick Harvie MSP Co-Convenor of The Scottish Green Party @patrickharvie

Two stereotypes plague Green parties the world over. At every election we seek to challenge them, but the lazier among our opponents just keep airing them again. The first is the idea of Greens as anti-business. We’re certainly against business-as-usual, and there’s a great deal about the way our economy works today that needs to change. But even the deepest-green agenda represents a huge job of work, from retrofitting our homes for energy efficiency to localising food production and the reuse of materials. All this represents meaningful economic activity, as do caring and creative work which often don’t show up in narrow measures like GDP. A Green view of the economy seeks to keep things in balance, and to bring human activity back within environmental limits; absolutely the last thing it means is a less productive economy. The second stereotype is the Green voice as merchant of doom. The oil’s running out, the seas are dying, and the climate crisis is upon us! Take to the hills! In reality of course we wouldn’t even raise these critical challenges if we didn’t believe there’s something positive to be done. In that sense, I’d argue that we’re the only merchants of hope on the political landscape.

ORCA TELECOM

Orca Telecom takes the worry out of telephone replacement project When business support organisation Elevator needed to update the ageing telephone systems in its Aberdeenshire business centres, it knew exactly where to look – Orca Telecom. Six of Elevator’s business centres are now linked through the cloud by a single telephone system with centrally controlled admin features and free calls between sites. Elevator Business Centres offer business space with flexible leasing terms for entrepreneurs and the Horizon hosted telephony solution that Orca installed perfectly suits this environment. Orca Telecom, which was started by directors Rory McEwan and Wayne Mackay, has grown rapidly to become a leading telecommunications supplier working with companies in Aberdeen, many of them in the oil and gas sector. Karen Pugh, Director of Property for Elevator, said: “We had known Orca for some time and asked them to replace our phone systems, which were starting to age. “The thing that most impressed us about Orca was the way they took away all the hassle from the process. “We told them what we wanted but we did not want to have to deal with line providers and the like and Orca did all of that for us. “The result was a process that was worryfree and a phone system that is very costeffective and very efficient. I would say

that Orca went above and beyond what they had to do.”

Single platform for multiple sites Orca’s Regional Customer Director Rory McEwan said: “We used our Horizon Hosted Voice product from Gamma, which is remarkably flexible and ideally suited to projects like this. In relation to the project we undertook with Elevator, it allowed us to deploy a single platform across multiple locations, which doesn’t require an engineer visit to make changes. As a business centre, this can be quite a regular occurrence, so the saving in time and money is significant.

Free calls and business continuity With ageing standalone legacy systems at each site, Orca was able to deploy Horizon with minimal capital outlay and took care of all the set-up and training using their locally based support staff. All Elevator’s existing phone numbers were retained and the company now benefits from free calls between their sites, alongside all the calling features you would expect from a modern IP-based telephone system. And because Horizon sits in the cloud, the service provides business continuity features that allows Elevator to carry on

making and taking calls, whatever the circumstances. “We believe in developing a relationship with our clients and working with them to deliver exactly what they want and key to that is taking away all the worry. Dealing with communications providers can be complicated and our approach is to ensure that the process is as smooth and easy as possible for the client.” Orca Telecom’s recent expansion was supported when it was recently acquired by Arrow Business Communications, which specialises in telephony solutions for businesses, offering a diverse portfolio ranging from hosted telephony and mobiles through to mobile device management, telephone systems and voice and data connectivity. ENERGY AND ENVIRONMENT

Access finance to realise your growth

By Kerry Sharp

Head of the Scottish Investment Bank

Head of the Scottish Investment Bank, Kerry Sharp, reflects on how risk capital funding is helping Scottish companies reach new heights It’s often said that records are made to be broken and that’s certainly been the case if you take a look at recent trends in Scotland’s risk capital market. As the risk capital market reached new heights, we at the Scottish Investment Bank have doubled our investment and helped more companies to access the finance they need to realise their growth plans. This included a record level of investment through our Renewable Energy Investment Fund. The Fund supports marine energy, community renewables and lower cost energy projects, bringing long term benefits to Scotland and taking us closer to our ambition of achieving a low carbon economy.

More than money I strongly believe – like many others – that it is not just about money. The key to success is getting the balance right between increasing the availability of growth capital and supporting more companies to successfully access this funding, combined with business support to help them achieve their growth ambitions. Across Scottish Enterprise we enable companies to successfully innovate, commercialise and enter international markets, and to connect with experienced investors that can add value to their business. Collaborative working in conjunction with the expertise of our private investor partners helps us to increase the value and breadth of support that we can provide to companies. Our support often begins well before any investment decision, with our Financial Readiness team ensuring businesses are well informed about their options and prepared to go on to raise the growth finance they need. Or with our High Growth Ventures team supporting the creation of new companies and helping them to build effective management teams. We work with businesses with global ambitions across all stages of development, from start up through to established businesses preparing to expand their international reach.

The key to success is getting the balance right between increasing the availability of growth capital and supporting more companies to successfully access this funding.

Increased market activity gives us a clear indication that there is strong demand for us to invest alongside more private investors, and importantly to bring even more international investment into Scotland.

Enhancing our offering A highlight for me is listening to our investment partners and businesses to review what is working well, where we can improve and working alongside the market to make enhancements to the way we deliver our co-investment activity. This was the basis for widening our Scottish co-investment fund parameters last year to increase flexibility to invest alongside more private sector investors and support more Scottish businesses. We’ll continue to review how we are best able to equip our companies with the information to access the right funding at the right time and respond to gaps in the market and to continue to develop innovative solutions that increase the supply of finance. We look forward to working with an increasingly diverse range of co-investors, many of whom will be investing in Scottish companies for the first time, who will bring expertise, skills and connections that will help support Scottish businesses to increase their global competitiveness. So if you are considering the next steps for your business and you would like to find out more about our funds and how we can help you to raise the finance you need, please get in touch and our team will be happy to help. RP ADAM

RP Adam – spotlessly clean since 1891 RP Adam Ltd is one of Scotland’s most successful fourth-generation family businesses, which this year celebrates 125 years as manufacturers of a wide range of cleaning and disinfection products, which now have a global market presence. In this significant anniversary year, Sales and Marketing Director Max Adam, a direct descendent of the company founder, talks to Business Scotland about what the company has learned from its 125 years of operation – and what continues to drive it forward as part of an ambitious growth plan launched in 2016.

Company Beginnings “The RP Adam story started in earnest on 15th February 1891 when my greatgrandfather Robert Purves Adam, a Galashiels gas works manager, decided to test the market for ammonia and bleaching agents amongst the local Borders’ textile industry. The small manufacturing plant he set up using waste products from the gas works, quickly found its entrepreneurial niche and gradually expanded by providing products which the local market wanted – from stain removers, to shoe polish and wool detergents. During the following century, my grandfather Forbes and then my father Geoffrey all added their personal stamp on the business, contributing to a Borders business dynasty which has maintained its headquarters in Selkirk whilst expanding across the globe – especially the Middle East. In that time, we have survived fires and flood, completed deals with Saudi princes and created our

support mechanisms in place to encourage entrepreneurial spirit and fund start-up businesses.

Our Scottish history has played a large part in shaping the company and its personality as it stands today. We have come a long way in the last 125 years and the business has faced many challenges along the way. But our core ‘Borders’ values of dedicated customer service, commercial transparency and honesty forged in a changing and often volatile business environment are the reason we are still around today – and looking forward to a very exciting future. We can confidently say our record for integrity is spotlessly clean, which means we have been able to nurture and maintain consistent relationships with our clients, customers and staff.

Looking to the Future

Expansion and Export

At RP Adam we believe we offer a service more than a product and we pride ourselves on providing solutions in a quick and effective manner leaving clients to get on with running their business safe in the knowledge they’re operating within a perfectly clean environment.

Whilst RP Adam has made its home in Selkirk, we serve markets throughout the UK and Middle East with current operation locations in Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Dubai. Our Middle East connection began with a chance meeting in 1977 at a trade show between Geoffrey Adam which led to the support and sponsorship of Prince Mohammed Al Faisal Al Saud, and we are now also celebrating 40 years operation in Saudi Arabia this year – as well as 20 years in Dubai. Our customers across the world now span the catering, food and drink, healthcare, leisure and facilities management sectors. And in our experience, being a respected medium-sized, Scottish family business offers a great platform to expand and build relationships with other regions and large organisations who value our heritage and ethical standpoint. Scotland offers a strong economic environment for businesses to build from, with plenty of

As we mark our 125th anniversary we are taking the opportunity to launch a new fiveyear programme of growth, looking towards a £20 million turnover by 2020. One of the advantages of having such an established pedigree in our industry is that we know what works, and what our customers want – driven by a senior management team which has worked together for around 20 years. Our goal ahead of 2020 is to use the experience and talent within the wider RP Adam family to expand the business at home and abroad by firmly establishing a new modern identity geared to expanding commercial priorities.

“Our objective every single day is to be seen by our customers as the outstanding provider of service in the cleaning industry.”

BUSINESS MENTORING

Mentoring support pays off Every business knows those early years are the toughest, and for consultants and freelancers in particular – it can be a lonely road. Fortunately, Kelly Morris managed to navigate her way through those early challenges with support from Business Mentoring. In 2013 Kelly set up a freelance consultancy business, providing management consultancy support to small businesses.

Kelly Morris

In less than a year she was in high demand for her bid management and writing services and unsure which path to follow.

Jim Rae

With their programme reaching its conclusion, Kelly Morris, and mentor, Jim Rae, shared how mentoring has worked for them.

Ayr for coffee and an initial chat. We met a few times afterwards and then… Kelly: …and then we had a break.. Jim: Well……yes we had a brief break. It was early days, you weren’t quite sure if you wanted to be freelance or a business and then at one point you said you were going to get a normal job!!! Kelly: ..that’s right. It was a brief thought. Jim of course knew I would be back. What kind of support did Jim offer? Kelly: He was a sounding board. He mostly listened, and encouraged me to question myself. He provided clarity and perspective. He rarely gave specific advice and he never told me what to do… Jim: Well that’s not what mentoring is about, it’s about supporting you to make your own decisions…..

Your mentoring has come to an end, what happens now? Jim: I’m sure I’ll stay in touch with Bidworks Kelly: I think if you go into the programme wholeheartedly you can’t just walk away from 12 months of friendship.

Jim: ..ah yes, well you see, Kelly is very much a ‘jump off a cliff and build the plane on the way down’ type of person.

Would you recommend the programme? Jim: Definitely - if you are willing to commit and want something from it.

Did you ever disagree?

Kelly: Absolutely. If it wasn’t for Jim, Bidworks wouldn’t be here today. It’s all about getting the match right though.

Kelly: Yes…on price, every time we met. Jim: Yes we will continue to debate that issue. Kelly is an entrepreneur but she’s a socialpreneur. She’s got a lot of time for people and wants to create a business for others before herself. So I’ve had to pull her back to the entrepreneur every now and then.

Jim: Kelly and I first met in the Meridian in

We just want to help small businesses win big contracts. Good companies are being prevented from winning work because they don’t have the knowledge, skills or very often the time to write a good tender or PQQ. We try to bridge that gap by offering the quality of tender writing that the large corporates enjoy, at affordable rates for small businesses.

Jim: I agree. It’s evolving. I’m seeing her business grow and I’m really proud of that.

Kelly: A North Ayrshire Council Economic Development Advisor actually brought it to my attention. He contacted Ayrshire Chambers on my behalf. I then met with Rhona Brown from the Mentoring Scheme and she managed it from there. Kelly: I met Rhona Brown and explained that I needed someone direct and quite challenging. Someone that had been there and done it – with experience. Someone that I could respect.

What are your aspirations for Bidworks?

Kelly: ….that’s true but often the sheer look of horror on your face said it all!

How did you get involved?

What were you matched?

systems. We’ve also rebranded to www. bidworks.co.uk and moved into larger office premises.

How has your business grown? Kelly: In 12 months we’ve gone from one freelance consultant to a full-time team of four. My husband John has joined the business as a full time Director and we have diversified our service offering to include implementation of quality management

Kelly and John Morris manage Bidworks, a company dedicated to helping small businesses win big contracts. The business offers bid management and writing services as well as ISO 9001 implementation. Jim Rae is a coach and mentor with Business Mentoring.

ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT

Mixed performance throughout Scotland’s key business sectors Roisin Milligan

Economic Research, Scottish Chambers of Commerce

Over the fourth quarter of 2015, there was a mixed performance throughout Scotland’s key business sectors. The Construction and Manufacturing sectors reported strong results, indicating continued growth following positive results in Q3 2015. While the Scottish Tourism sector had mixed results, the Retail & Wholesale sector experienced a decline with many of the indictors entering into negative territory. Both Retail & Wholesale and Tourism industries, overall, had considerably poorer results in Q4 2015 compared to the same quarter last year. Additionally, results over the quarter, indicated a further contraction within the Financial & Business Services sector. Overall, the net % balance of business optimism was lower in Q4 for the majority of sectors in comparison to the same quarter in 2014. Low levels of optimism may be due to a significant number of firms citing concerns regarding the impact that the Living Wage, low oil prices and business rates will have on their business.

Business Scotland

70

The only sector that experienced increased growth in comparison to the same quarter last year was the Manufacturing sector, in which business optimism had a net % balance of +14; this is also marginally greater than the figure reported in Q3 2015. Results recorded for the Financial & Business Services sector continued to show the impact that the low global market price for Brent crude oil is continuing to have on the Scottish economy. Oil prices remained low throughout 2015, falling to below $40 per barrel by the year-end, and was a commonly cited concern for businesses throughout the year. Not only has the performance of oil and gas service businesses dampened results in

the Financial and Business Services sector, but the continued decline in global oil prices now looks to be extending beyond those businesses operating directly in the sector. Scottish Chambers of Commerce’s Quarterly Economic Indicator engages with five of Scotland’s key business sectors: Construction, Financial and Business Services, Manufacturing, Retail & Wholesale and Tourism. It is the longest running business survey of its kind These findings, released in collaboration with the University of Strathclyde’s Fraser of Allander Institute show the position of businesses for the fourth quarter of 2015.

ANGUS COUNCIL

South Montrose Regeneration Project The South Montrose Regeneration Project is aiming to facilitate the physical regeneration and environmental improvement of the area and in the process create business opportunities for Montrose Port, port users and the GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) pharmaceutical plant.

to the harbour in particular and the Health and safety Consultation Zones affects the development potential within this part of town.

This initiative is being led by Angus Council and was conceived in 2011, when key public and private sector stakeholders came together before developing a masterplan with the ambition of creating 300 new jobs and attracting £100 million of private sector investment. The Council’s direct contribution is a £3.1 million budget for the delivery of a new spine road to improve access and road safety.

n GSK has commissioned its new ‘Aluminium Salts’ facility and started construction on a second major investment project, an ‘Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients’ facility. This is a combined investment of £65 million and will create 65 new jobs.

At the outset South Montrose was described as, comprising a mix of land uses in different ownerships including the GSK pharmaceutical facility, the harbour as well as residential, industrial, warehousing and commercial properties. The area between GSK and the north quay of the harbour is of poor environmental quality and contains a number of older buildings, some of which are vacant and in poor condition and several of which are of historic interest. While there may be scope for regeneration, the current road layout and configuration of buildings restricts accessibility within the area and

The project has already delivered some major actions and further investment opportunities are being developed. Progress includes: n Angus Council completed section 2 of the spine road in November 2015, which was funded by Scottish Enterprise. This new development provides a through route from Caledonia Street to Ferry Road to Barrack Road.

n Montrose Port Authority has invested £6 million upgrading berths six and seven on the north side of the port to ensure deep water berthing and enhanced quayside operational working space. In 2014 the annual tonnage of shipping visiting Montrose was 2.08 million tonnes. This is the first time the port’s tonnage has exceeded two million tonnes, underlining the port’s growing importance as a major North Sea service and cargo handling base. n Rix Shipping (Scotland) demolished their old warehouse and offices in Meridean Street and constructed a new 30,000 sq ft transit shed for port users in a £1 million investment. This followed on

Rix’s refurbishment of warehouses in Barrack Road to create a modern 36,000 sq ft production and warehouse facility for Certex UK, a multinational company specialising in lifting products and services. The South Montrose Regeneration project has made significant progress and Angus Council is committed to working with partners to deliver this project and bring further investment and jobs to the area. Other investment projects are in the pipeline with companies and developers recognising the potential of the port and surrounding area. The coastal town of Montrose, with a population of 11,960, sits between Dundee and Aberdeen and boasts an attractive town centre and a wide sandy beach. Montrose is a great little town to visit, with a pleasant old centre and an interesting museum and art gallery. The town sits on the edge of a virtually landlocked two-mile-square lagoon of mud known as the Basin, which is a nature reserve and haven for wildfowl and wading birds who love its mud. The beach road, Marine Avenue, across from the town museum, heads down through sand dunes and golf links to car parks fringing the fine, wide beach overlooked by a slender white lighthouse. Neighbouring Ferryden is a picturesque former village situated on the south side of the river South Esk. Perth enjoys a beautiful setting in the heart of Scotland and is home to several corporate headquarters, including energy giant SSE, Aviva, Stagecoach and Highland Spring. It also enjoys a strategic location, within an hour’s drive of seven of the UK’s top research universities, and the city itself is home to the largest campus of the University of the Highlands & Islands. With significant strengths in tourism, clean technology and food and drink – the city is home to Scotland’s national Food and Drink Park – all supported by the Council’s tailored “open for business” approach, the Perth City Region is also primed for significant international investment opportunities and the city’s workforce boasts one of the highest concentrations of graduates across Scotland’s seven cities. This is a great place to live as well as work for all ages; with more places to eat and drink per head of population than any other Scottish city. Surrounding Perthshire is also the UK’s leading destination for adventure tourism.

Quality of life, coupled with its position at the heart of Scotland’s road and rail networks, means that this is the obvious place for business relocation and investment.

PERTH CITY PLAN

A number of key city development projects will sustain and build the regional economy over the next 20 years, and these are set out in the Perth City Plan. They include the development of the River Tay waterfront as a leisure and tourism destination, with river taxis, pontoons, a City Centre Activity Centre and riverside kiosk opportunities. This is to be complemented by improvements to the public realm in the heart of the city. Over the next five years, more than £50m is to be invested to support the city’s cultural and leisure facilities, including the completion of the PH20 project, which will create a unique experience and a dynamic mix of more than 20 sports and leisure opportunities. Up to 7,000 new homes are planned to accommodate a population that is expected to increase by 25% within the next two decades. Forbes first ever “30 Under 30 Europe” list, announced in London this morning, features 300 young innovators, entrepreneurs and leaders across Europe who are under 30 years of age and who are transforming business, technology, finance, media, culture and more, as judged by some of the most accomplished and acclaimed individuals in each category. The list covers 10

categories – Media, Industry, Policy, Retail and E-Commerce, The Arts, Entertainment, Social Entrepreneurs, Science and Health Care, Technology, and Finance – with each of the honorees vetted by a panel of expert judges in their respective fields. Visit Forbes 30 Under 30. With the list covering the whole of Europe, Cally was the only Scottish entrepreneur featured in the Retail and E-Commerce category. Other noteable Scottish honoree is tennis star, Andy Murray (Entertainment category). Cally grew up in the Scottish highlands and studied at Dundee University he now lives and works in Edinburgh having established the Mallzee headquarters in the Scottish capital. Cally readily admits one of the toughest decisions he has made as CEO of Mallzee happened last year, when he appeared on Dragons Den and turned down Peter Jones offer of £75K investment. Fortunately only a few months later his decision was vindicated when Mallzee closed a significant £2.5 million funding round led by the Royal Mail Group, taking total funding raised to date, to £3.1 million.

How do you make flexible working work? Hark back to the time you’ve had the best ideas of your professional life. Where were you at the time? Taking a walk? Having a discussion with your friend over a pint of beer? Or, better still – in the shower? The notion that you’re most productive at your job in the office is becoming outdated. Chief Envisioning Officer at Microsoft, Dave Coplin, says “The basic issue with flexible working is just what is it? One of the challenges I consistently see is that when I say “flexible working”, most people hear “working from home”. And actually, flexible working is not necessarily working from home. Flexible working is about being able to make a choice, on any given day, about the most appropriate location for the work you’re about to do.”. To make flexible working work there are two important question a business owner must ask. Does my organisation have the right culture to adopt flexible working and do I have the right tools to enable effective flexible working? Let’s start by looking at the tools.

Choosing the right tools for flexible working To do business anywhere, reliable tech tools that are accessible anywhere are a bare essential. Be it attending customer calls or accessing files on the move, it’s vital to choose the right flexible working technologies for your business. Here are three flexible working technologies that make flexible working more efficient.

Flexible working is about being able to make a choice, on any given day, about the most appropriate location for the work you’re about to do

The Cloud Cloud computing means storing and using data and programmes over the internet instead of your computer’s hard drive. Sound complicated? It isn’t! If you checked your email on your smartphone this morning, then chances are the data was stored in the cloud. Organisations who want to embrace flexible working should be embracing the cloud and equipping their teams with tools that allow them to communicate effectively, access and share files wherever they are (with or without internet connection) and make them more productive than ever. You can try Office 365 for free to test out these useful features.

The Device Whether it is a swanky tablet that can do backflips or a simple notebook that purrs, choosing the right device is important to achieve the ultimate flexibility solution. Windows 10 mobile devices range from laptops, notebooks, tablets and phones and come with handy features such as touch, type, write or speak depending on where you are and who you are with.

The Padlock Make it safe to work anywhere and avoid any disasters should you or someone in your business lose their device. It happens! With useful tools like Microsoft’s Enterprise Mobility Suite (EMS) you can have peace of mind that your devices and any sensitive information on them is protected. It is just one easy to manage package which is affordable for any small business and works seamlessly with Office 365. To find out more about how to make flexible working work for your business, visit the Microsoft Small Business website www.microsoft.com/en-gb/smb/makeit-possible/ or email us on HelloSMB@ Microsoft.com

INSPIRING WOMEN IN BUSINESS

Inspiring women in business

Peta Hay is Head of Saxton Bampfylde’s Scotland office in Edinburgh and the firm’s global Consumer and Retail Practice.

Tracey Eker is the CEO and founder of Flexiworkforce.com, a specialist flexible jobs platform which offers companies a diversity and inclusion employment solution.

Helen Rush is Business Development Manager at Polaris Learning Ltd, a company passionate about its customers.

When it comes to appointing the most outstanding candidate for the job, the difference between success and failure can lie in the smallest of details. That’s why at Saxton Bampfylde we leave nothing to chance. It’s my responsibility to advise leading private, public and nonprofit organisations on engaging the brightest and best talent available. Our team takes a unique researchled approach to senior and board level appointments. By collaborating with our clients we are able to gain a clearer perspective to proactively navigate the market in search of the perfect match. As a UK business with offices in London and Edinburgh, we are recognised as specialists in the field of financial and professional services, oil and gas, retail, media, consumer goods and technology. What sets us apart is our knowledge of the local landscape. We understand the similarities and differences between businesses from Aberdeen to Inverness, Dundee to Glasgow need to be considered to find, attract and secure the best leadership candidates at the very highest levels. Flexiworkforce was inspired by my own difficulties in finding high quality work that fitted around my family. I realised there was no job platform on the market which pulled together the best flexible work opportunities – whether is was home/remote working, full time flexi-time hours or simply open

After many years in financial services in 2010, I joined Polaris Learning, a company specialising in training, development and competency. This was a big change of industry for me as well as a completely new experience from working in global corporates to a smaller, ‘family feel’ company. I was quickly impressed with the passion of every employee, the dedication to each customer, the level of expertise in the company, and the range of products and services. From developing global competency management systems, training assessors on oil rigs, training the training team at an airport, allergen training in a food plant, HACCP in a fish factory to IOSH at a paper mill! For someone in sales and marketing, this was a fascinating learning curve as I built up my knowledge on a wide range of products and industries as well as understanding the needs of an increasingly international client base. I have also learnt that the skills and knowledge to make it work are the same in all industries: a focus on customer service, a commitment to getting the best results for the client, project management to keep work on track, and the ability to innovate in response to client and market needs.

to flexibility. My market research revealed some 14.1m in the UK wanted flexible working. It was then that the concept of Flexiworkforce was born. Flexiworkforce is now the only UK-wide jobs platform which provides a Diversity and Inclusion Employer Solution and offers a bespoke demographic hub for candidates to dramatically improve their user experience. Our new platform launching at the beginning of February will merge with our current beta site to revolutionise the job board market. It will provide a personalised experience for job seekers. Employers will no longer be drowned out by the overwhelming lists of similar jobs, with Flexiworkforce providing a unique opportunity for them to engage directly with potential candidates throughout the process. I’m proud to have developed key relationships with international companies including Barclays, RBS, Santander and PWC. The Scottish Government and a range of charities have been impressed by how Flexiworkforce has found a better, smarter way of working. 2016 will be the year of the #FlexiRevolution.

In 2018 Scotland will celebrate the Year of Young People; we all need to be ready and I’ll leave you with the views of two colleagues who joined VisitScotland as Modern Apprentices.

Young at heart Malcolm Roughead OBE Chief Executive of VisitScotland

Diversity in the workplace is vital for a forward looking, creative organisation and businesses need to make sure they’re investing in the talent and influencers of the future. It’s time to make our young people shine. At the end of 2015 VisitScotland was awarded the Investors in Young People Gold Award. Achieving the Investors in Young People Award is an outstanding achievement for any organisation. It signals a culture that puts young people at the heart of an organisation and to achieve the Gold Award elevates an organisation to become the benchmark for industry standards. I am delighted we have been recognised as an organisation that invests in our young people. Feedback from the assessors stated how impressed they were with the enthusiasm and commitment demonstrated by the staff they interviewed, and I couldn’t agree more. The efforts we’ve made in

improving our student schemes, including those for Modern Apprentices and Graduates, have succeeded because of the excellent calibre of young people who work here. Learning and development isn’t just for young people, and its benefits are undeniable at any age, but there’s a lot to be said for placing value on development from the earliest stage in your career. The IIYP award, although a brilliant achievement, doesn’t mean we can rest on our laurels as there is always room for progression and improvement so we’ll continuously be looking to expand on the opportunities we provide for our young people, and the rest of the organisation. Previously I have written about the need for businesses to embrace the benefits of the digital world and what better way to develop these skills than by employing and investing in young people who use digital and social media every day. It’s a natural part of their lives and employers need to understand how best to make this work.

“I first started as a Modern Apprentice in the Consumer PR team at 16, coming straight from school after finishing my exams. When I started my role I was encouraged to attend internal training courses, had the chance to shadow other departments to gain a better understanding of how teams work together and I had the opportunity to work in Glasgow for the Commonwealth Games.” Melissa Singh Marketing Assistant – Global Brand and Marketing Communications

“I started with VisitScotland in April 2014. I’ve been taken aback by the range of course and opportunities available, as well as the encouragement and emphasis on improvement within the organisation. The best thing about working here is to have the opportunity to market something I’m so passionate about and I really feel privileged that I can help show how fantastic Scotland is to the rest of the world.” Josh Mcleish Marketing Assistant - Long Haul and Emerging Markets

Virgin Trains launch new Stirling route

Official Scottish Chambers of Commerce Business Partner

The launch of our 5.26am service connecting Stirling to London on December 14 marked an important step in Virgin Trains’ plans to transform the East Coast rail route. On that early winter morning, I was joined by Scotland’s Transport Minister, two council leaders, representatives from key business, industry, tourism and passenger groups, all of whom had different stories to tell about the important role that modern transport links play in underpinning economic growth. Transport Minister Derek Mackay talked about the “significant economic benefits” the service will bring to Stirling and the wider region, bringing attention to its “diverse and growing business base” as well as cultural and historic attractions. The city’s Council Leader Johanna Boyd spoke of Stirling as an “outward-looking city and city region keen to connect with the business community”, where economic success will be fostered by creating opportunities for new players as well as those already active within the regional economy. We already have a later direct service connecting Stirling directly to the UK capital, the Highland Chieftain, which provides onwards journeys to Inverness. But we know from our conversations with stakeholders, particularly among the business community, when bidding to take over the East Coast passenger franchise that their aspirations don’t stop there.

London, the juggernaut of the UK economy, is a key destination for businesses in Scotland’s seven cities and beyond. Our new service will cut 46 minutes from the journey time to the UK capital, and deliver customers to King’s Cross Station at 10.52, with a new direct return service departing at 3pm. Crucially, this means the passengers don’t have change trains, which we know is a high priority for them. This is the start of the journey – and there’s much more to come. As I write, work is undergoing at our Craigentinny depot in Edinburgh to refurbish our fleet of “HST” trains, tearing out old and stale interiors and replacing them with freshly-designed, Virgin-designed livery, including executive leather seating, which will place us at the cutting edge of customer experience in rail. In May, we’re introducing five additional trains between London

and Edinburgh, ensuring the English and Scottish capitals are connected by a halfhourly service through most of the day. Then from 2018 we’re introducing an entirely new fleet of 65 Intercity Express trains which are faster, more comfortable and greener and will help us completely transform services between England and Scotland. The passion, energy and focus on customers that comes with the Virgin brand is key to our entire approach to this transformation. One of the most hearting things I’ve seen since we began this journey in March last year is the response of frontline colleagues onboard and at stations as they strive to bring that Virgin touch to people’s journeys, going beyond the expected to deliver something amazing. This is at the heart of everything we at Virgin want to achieve and our core promise to all our customers, in Stirling and beyond.

Queen Street tunnel to close for 20 weeks

Official Scottish Chambers of Commerce Business Partner

The ScotRail Alliance has launched a major publicity campaign to ensure that customers have all the information they need to keep moving when Queen Street tunnel closes for twenty weeks between 20 March and 8 August 2016. The £60m project will renew nearly 2km of ageing slab-track through Queen Street tunnel and enable faster, longer, greener trains to operate on Scotland’s rail network from later this year. The closure of the tunnel will mean that trains that would normally run in and out of Queen Street High Level will be diverted to either Queen Street Low Level or Glasgow Central. This will mean changes to existing timetables and, in many cases, longer journey times. A dedicated webpage (www.scotrail.co.uk/ QueenStreetTunnel) has been launched to give people information about the impact on their own journey. This will be supported with advertising, business briefings and customer information at stations, on train and online. Additional carriages will be added to services that are running to provide as much extra capacity as possible, and queuing systems will be in place at Glasgow Queen Street and Edinburgh Waverley at peak times. As part of the campaign, The ScotRail Alliance met business leaders to underpin our major publicity campaign to ensure people have information needed to keep

moving during the Queen Street tunnel closure. Transport Minister Derek Mackay led the informal meeting, hosted by Stuart Patrick, Chief Executive of Glasgow Chamber of Commerce. Mr Mackay stressed the railway remains open for business and that the Scottish Government is committed to working closely with industry partners. Phil Verster, ScotRail Alliance MD, told businesses the £60m project will support the introduction of faster, longer, greener trains.

This will mean more seats, shorter journey times and less impact on our environment. The long term benefits of this investment will be considerable, not just for our railway, but also for the country.”

Phil Verster, managing director of the ScotRail Alliance, said: “Glasgow Queen Street is one of the busiest stations in Scotland. Every day, tens of thousands of people travel through the station on their way to work, to college or university or to visit friends. People will still be able to do that while the tunnel is closed - the railway is still very much open for business. However, they will see changes to their normal journey. We want to make sure that everyone understands what these change mean for them.

“This is a once in a generation project and one of the most ambitious ever planned on the Edinburgh-Glasgow route. The works will support the introduction of a new generation of faster, quieter and greener electric trains on routes across the Central Belt next year.

“That is why we are launching our biggest ever public information campaign. In the run up to the closure we will be speaking directly to our customers, to businesses, and to public bodies to give them the information they need and to answer any questions that they might have. “Upgrading the tunnel will allow us to run faster, longer, greener trains in the future.

Transport Minister Derek Mackay said: “This is a significant milestone in our £5 billion programme of investment in Scotland’s Railway which is helping to reverse decades of under-investment and substantially modernise our rail infrastructure.

“Although I understand that this work will cause some inconvenience to passengers, the ScotRail Alliance is working to ensure that services are maintained where possible, disruption is kept to a minimum and that passengers are kept well informed throughout the work. “I would like to thank passengers in advance for their cooperation and understanding during the tunnel closure.” Customers can check their own journey online now, with full timetables available to download from 20 February.

XERETEC

Xeretec Scotland ends year on a high A leading managed print services provider has superseded its targets for 2015, securing contracts across the UK and Europe totalling more than £2.4 million. Xeretec Scotland, which has offices in Glasgow, Dundee, Aberdeen, Inverness, Elgin and Shetland installed a total of 875 printer devices in both commercial offices across Europe and offshore vessels throughout the year. The firm’s Aberdeen office alone secured a four-year Europeanwide contract with a major oil company to supply in excess of 200 devices across 31 sites, with further devices to be installed this year. Meanwhile, its Glasgow office, Xeretec’s latest Central Belt base, also secured a substantial number of contracts in only its second year of trading, many of which have been in the commercial print sector. The firm has invested heavily in its managed print service (MPS) offering, enhancing its helpdesk in Aberdeen to remotely manage all of the Xeretec group machines across Europe and offshore. The helpdesk team of 20 provides technical and troubleshooting support to customers, as well as liaising with engineers for call outs and supplying consumable parts. In addition to this, the firm has also invested in Equitrac and Safecom software solutions to provide customers with insight and control over their printing, as well as allowing them to manage costs and wastage. Managing director of Xeretec Scotland, John Sheran, said: “Xeretec has had yet another

successful year, securing both new business contracts and contract extensions across all of our Scottish offices. Customers’ extending their contracts is a great sign that we are a reliable and flexible provider that they can trust. Enhancing our helpdesk facilities here in Aberdeen has also instilled confidence in our customer base across Europe. “Over the last two years, we have been focusing on growing our Scottish operations, opening a new office in Glasgow, so it’s great that we are continuing to increase our client portfolio and even better, witness a

surge in demand for our services. We now have a strong presence across the whole of Scotland with over 90 staff in six offices, which will help to cement our position as one of the leading production print and MPS providers in Scotland for 2016.” Xeretec Scotland is part of The Xeretec Group, the largest Xerox reseller in Western Europe and the largest managed print service provider in the UK, with a combined team of 220 employees.
