The Pawnee Bill Ranch was once the showplace of the world-renowned Wild West Show entertainer Gordon W. “Pawnee Bill” Lillie. Visitors can tour Pawnee Bill and his wife May’s fourteen-room mansion, fully furnished with their original belongings. Their dream home, completed in 1910, is filled with Lillie family memorabilia, photographs, original artwork, and more. The ranch property also houses a museum with exhibits related to Pawnee Bill, Wild West Shows, and the Pawnee tribe. The 500-acre grounds include the original ranch blacksmith shop, a 1903 log cabin, a large barn built in 1926, and an Indian Flower Shrine—all available to the public.

PAWNEE SCHOOL SYSTEM
Pawnee Public Schools, home of the Black Bears, was first established back in 1900, and consisted of only eight classrooms. As the community continued to grow, so did the need for a larger facility. In 1912 a new three-story building, which held grades one through twelve, administration offices, a 700-seat auditorium, and a gymnasium was erected and served the community through 1962. Over time it became the desire of the community to build a separate elementary school and in 1943, the Works Project Administration (WPA) built a new grade school using rocks from the original school building, this building still houses Pawnee’s 2nd, 3rd, and 4th grade students.
The community of Pawnee was named after the Pawnee Indians, who were forced from their land in Nebraska and relocated to what later became known as Pawnee, Oklahoma. The Pawnee Indian students were forced to attend the Indian Boarding School in an effort to “Americanize” its members. A great partnership was first established in 1959 when the Pawnee Indian Boarding School students joined the Pawnee Public School system. Pawnee Nation continues to be Pawnee Schools greatest partner and supporter.

“Pawnee Bill” in honor and remembrance of his mother, Susan A. Lillie. Pawnee Schools has come a long way since 1900, and is proud to have been the home of many great accomplishments through academics, athletics, our arts programs, as well as for being recognized as the first school in the Nation to have placed seat belts on all of our busses. Pawnee Schools Faculty and Staff is dedicated in keeping our students safe, while equipping each student with the tools necessary to ensure their successes after high school.
Keeping safety as the school’s number one priority, in 2012 district voters approved a 1.6 million dollar bond issue to build a saferoom that will withstand an F-5 tornado. The shelter serves as a saferoom for students, staff, and the community, as well as facilitates elementary students as an indoor playground as needed.

The most hearlded U.S. Army unit in the Spanish-American War were the Rough Riders. One of the most notable Rough Riders was multitalented Pawnee William Pollock (1870-1899). He was a painter as well as a warrior.
“One of the gamest fighters and best soldiers was Pollock, a full blooded Pawnee,” wrote President Teddy Roosevelt in his memoir The

This beautiful, historic 1939 WPA sandstone rock bath house overlooking a two acre fresh water pool with sandy beach, water slide, high dive, diving board and paddle boats is open Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend. It is located at Pawnee Lake and is available year round for reunions, weddings and parties. The Pawnee Bath House is on the National Historical Register.

A herd of bison, longhorn, and several draft horses call the Pawnee Bill Ranch home and can often be found grazing in the drive-through exhibit pasture. The ranch is also a day-use facility and several outdoor amenities can be reserved for private functions. The ranch has covered picnic shelters, tipi-covered picnic tables, fishing ponds, a playground, and a meeting room. The Big Barn, shelter, meeting rooms, porches, and lawns can be rented for weddings, reunions, meetings, and more. The Pawnee Bill Ranch also proudly re-creates Pawnee Bill’s Original Wild West Show annually during the second weekend in June.

Dick Tracy Creator, Chester Gould was born six miles East of Pawnee, Oklahoma in his grandfather’s one room log cabin on November 20, 1900. He moved from Pawnee after he graduated from the Old Castle School In 1919. The idea for the Dick Tracy strip came to fruition in 1931 and appeared in the Sunday color funnies in the Chicago Tribune and the New York News on October 4th, 1931. Many of the characters were based on his friends in Pawnee.
