And we thought March was madness! It was just the beginning of so many changes here in Pawnee and our Nation. Our Pawnee businesses stepped up to the challenge by adapting their business models to accommodate our citizens. Clicks Steakhouse provided a great take out menu that could be called in and delivered curbside. Ranch Berger opened a long-closed pick up window with call in service and did a landslide business! Simple Simons tasty pizzas were also hand delivered to your car. Our Hillcrest Pharmacy continued their great call in and personal delivery to your car as well. J & J Custom Fire is offering oil changes by appointment. Spears Furniture, Lee Wills, was available for appliance repairs, Armstrong and FB&T Banks kept their drive-up windows open longer hours and offered meetings by appointment. I saw Mr. Clark Shouse Jr. meet a client in the parking lot to finalize a banking issue. Our banks lobbies are now open, restaurants are open with smaller numbers of customers coming in and helpers wearing masks, most retail stores are open but requesting customers follow our Governors guidelines for safety. Mr. Rodeo himself, Ronnie Jestes, tells me the Pawnee Bill Memorial Rodeo is still on as planned for July 30,31 & August 1. One of our Chamber committees has been working on a new website that should be ready to publish shortly. Another Chamber committee is currently working on a grant application that would welcome a traveling Smithsonian Art show to Pawnee in 2021. The July 4th weekend of 1993 to Charles and Nita Franks wasn’t just America’s birthday. It was the opening weekend for their new store in Pawnee, Oklahoma. Family brought the Franks from Arizona and with only $500 they built the inventory of their store to what it is today. Full of unique clothing, jewelry, gift items and collectibles, it’s become a fixture on Harrison Street in downtown Pawnee. The Franks have five children, 2 boys and 3 girls and 8 grandchildren. While none of the children are involved in the store, the grandkids love “helping” out. And Nita loves the opportunity to be creative which shows throughout the building. It also gives the Franks the chance to socialize with people from all over the country and many foreign countries who have stopped by. Nita’s dedication to her business also extends to her commitment and support of her community. She is currently serving as the President of the Pawnee Chamber of Commerce, a position she has held before. WRANGLER excels in Kansas and Oklahoma where other bermudagrasses typically fail. WRANGLER was developed by the Johnston Seed Co. using breeding lines licensed by Oklahoma State Uninversity. WRANGLER SEED IS AVAILABLE AT SILLWATER MILLING COMPANY. APPLICATION: Wrangler is an excellent choice for pasture, hay or soil conservation in temperate and subtropical regions. WRANGLER is well adapted to Oklahoma And Kansas where winter kill of Arizona common and other bermudagrass is a problem. SEEDING: • Dates: Late spring when soil temperatures reach 65 Degrees F (20 Degrees C). Plantings through summer months are successful if moisture is available for germination and seeding establishment. • Rates: 10 to 12Lb. /Acre (9 to 13 hg/ha). • Depth: 1/8 (3mm) on heavy soils to 1/4 (6mm) on sandy soils. • Method: Brillion seeder; broadcast (roll or harrow). • Soil Preparation: Prepare from seed bed free of weeds and clods to provide good seed to soil contact. •pH: Test soil prior to planting. A range of 6.0 to 7.7 is sufficient. • Fertility: Test soil prior to planing. A fertilizer low in nitrogen but high in phosphorous and potassium is recommended as a starter fertilizer to promote seedling vigor without promoting excessive weed growth. Increase nitrogen as seedlings develop and a sod forms. • Weed Control: Not recommended in the seedling stage except for very light applications of 2-4 D to control broadleaf weeds. Residual herbicides are not recommended in the first 60 days. • Irrigation: If applicable, keep soil moist for germination as seedlings develop reduce frequency of watering but increase the amount.
