February is the month in Pawnee that everyone gets excited that spring is almost here! Valentine’s Day our flower shop, Petals’ & Stems, is absolutely stuffed full of beautiful plants, flowers, balloons, and all the things anyone could ever want to give their sweetie! February also brings anticipation of spring and all the great activities that will be happening in Pawnee. In preparation of events, a new park is in the works for our main street retail area, thanks to the donation of two lots right on Harrison Street from First Bank & Trust. Beautiful landscaping, park benches, public restrooms and a stage area for small concerts are being designed and construction will start within the next couple of weeks. 2,500 to 3,000 bicycle racers are coming through Pawnee for the 100 Mile Mid-South Gravel Race March 12. We will have a repair station, water station, an ambulance just in case, a food truck and live entertainment on that Saturday. All of our downtown merchants will be open to receive our cyclists and their support staffs. March 26 is the Grand opening of the Smithsonian "Crossroads" Change in Rural America exhibit that will be held at Pawnee Bill Ranch big barn March 26- May 7, 2022. April 16 is the World Famous Lions Easter Egg hunt weekend t Pawnee Bill Ranch. Over 4,000 candy filled eggs will be hidden by Easter Bunny, festivities start sharply at 9 a.m. I want to take this opportunity to express our condolences to the family of Mayor Tom Briggs who served our community for decades as Mayor and Chamber manager. Tom was at every event held in Pawnee, Old Time Saturday Night, our PBM rodeo, Lions Easter egg hunt, 4th of July Games on Square, Christmas Festival of lights. You could find Tom working at the lake to make our campgrounds and fishing areas better our citizens. No one was more dedicated to our city of Pawnee. Tom Briggs is greatly missed but we are so very blessed to have had his vision and dedication. RIP Mayor Briggs.
