It’s a privilege to write this editors Column at a time when the Sri Lanka Club Symposium is celebrating their 15 years wonderful journey. It has often been said that Toastmaster is a journey not a destination. Being a partner of a prestige organization like Toastmasters International with a history of 15 years is without doubt an amazing achievement. SLCS did not have a journey with rainbows and butterflies. We were the 3rd toastmaster club established in Bahrain and it is the only TM club for Sri Lankan community living in Bahrain. Throughout these 15 years, our mother club, Sri Lanka Club Bahrain has given us a tremendous support to reach our goals. SLCS would like to take this opportunity to give our sincere appreciation to all the SLC presidents & members for their support, understanding and encouragement. Our veteran toastmasters, likes of DTM Clement Fernando and late Mr.Chandara laynarachchi did all the hard work to start the SLCS in April 1998 and up to now it has served more than 100 professionals. There are no words to describe the team work, contribution, productiveness & elegance of our toastmasters. There were good times and the bad. Each and every experience is shaped up by certain events or situations combined with how we react to them. The most important thing is not to just stay ahead at all times, but also to ensure that team shares true passion of toastmaster’s journey. In the past 15 years SLCS was led by true leaders who showed us path to success by being consistent and simply keep moving. Experiences shape the people we become in the future and the future can be as near as tomorrow. What’s important to remember is to decide what is worth doing for and who you’re doing it for, toastmaster program help us to reach our goals in leadership & communications. Membership in Toastmasters is one of the greatest investments you can make in yourself. I have been a part of SLCS for the last two years and the experience what I got cannot be compared with any other place. SLCS is the place where competitive professionals must constantly innovate to stay ahead of competition in a very dynamic system. I wish SLCS all the best & prosperous future.

OUR OUR PRESIDENTS PRESIDENTS

“If I have seen farther than others, it is because I was standing on the shoulder of giants.” - Isaac Newton

Greetings. Whenever I hear about Sri Lanka Club Symposium Toastmasters (SLCS), instantly a number of notable names will spring out in my mind. I can easily recall Distinguished Toastmasters Ahmed Rizvi and Mohd Salie. These distinguished personalities and a few other leaders propelled the club to its prominence and continue to be amongst the best contributors to the growth of Toastmasters in the region. I first set foot at the Sri Lankan Club through an invitation of my friend DTM Fe Gutierrez in 2005. The purpose of the invitation is to “take pictures” of the Division C Conference Committee. During that time, I was being lured to “go beyond the club”. Since that fateful day, I literally “went beyond my home club”, joined and participated in many district wide activities. I have attended many more SLCS meetings afterwards.

I should then be grateful for SLC Toastmasters for contributing to my later career in Toastmasters. I have attended many more SLC meetings afterwards. One of the fascinating spectacle and pride of every SLC Toastmasters meeting is its adherence to ‘parliamentary procedures’ and various ‘Toastmasters protocols’. This makes SLCS TM with a BIG Difference. The passion and dedication of its leaders ensure the legacy continues. I look forward to seeing and meeting many more leaders from SLCS Toastmasters. ”LET’S DO TODAY’S WORK TODAY!” Alex Ginete, DTM

At the outset, it is a true privilege and pleasure to be associated with the symposium, as Division Governor my happiness and pride is not divided but multiplied. I have observed that the symposium holds together a vibrant community; budding artists; enthusiastic gaveliers and selfless Toastmasters. Many stalwart Toastmasters like (late) Chandra Liyanarachchi and others have made this symposium a memorable and enriching for all the participants. The meetings as I have myself seen are lively and enriching. They have exemplified the Symposium to a Brand that will help many upcoming junior Toastmasters to be future Leaders. I’m learning a lot from committed seniors as well as imminent Gaveliers. I should then be grateful for SLC Toastmasters for contributing to my later career in Toastmasters. The one club that can proudly proclaim its presence among peers and predecessors is the Srilanka Club Symposium. As the current Division Governor I extend to you all my sincere support in every step you take, and wish to be a small part in your small steps, big leaps and dynamic performance of the symposium. With all best wishes let’s look forward because the best is yet to be.

AREA GOVERNOR’S MESSAGE

CLUB VISIT TO SLCS AREA 46

Talking of my experience in toastmasters, taking up responsibilities or participation is the key to develop our leadership skills. The more you give the more you benefit. Please don’t shy away from opportunities that come your way for those may not repeat. While nominating officials for the executive committees of SLCS and the Area, I witnessed how backward we are compared to our peers.

Mr President, members of the executive committee, fellow toastmasters. A child will always be happy to share and showoff his achievements with his parents and family whatever his age or position may be. Likewise today I am so glad to stand in front of you in my home club as your own Area Governor. First and foremost my sincere thanks to the Past Area Governor TM Pandula Medawatta and the previous committee for nominating me for this position. It goes without saying, I’ll be the happiest to serve you. To brief you about the Area officers for this term DESIGNATION

Achieving DCP goals is one of the hot topics discussed at Area, Division and District levels. SLCS has a record of working proactively towards DCP goals hence I skip this topic not by oversight but consciously.

A key activity in the Area is the Area Contest. This year the dates for the contests have been pre-determined to avoid overlaps, and this would also make the process of arranging judges much convenient. We are aiming to hold the area contest at soonest possible, the date will be agreed at the forthcoming Area council meeting. Once, when I browsed the internet about effective speaking, many results emphasized the importance of not speaking or speaking rightly. Here we are, mastering the art of speaking!!

For your benefit I urge all of you to participate in toastmaster activities and develop to be great leaders. I leave you with my heartiest wishes, especially to the new President and executive committee to have term filled with success in all endeavors. Explore, exploit and experience ! DOWN THE MEMORY LANE

A BRIEF HISTORY OF TOASTMASTERS - HOW IT ALL BEGAN.

AHMED RIZVI,DTM

The next thing Dr Smedley knew was that he had a Toastmasters Club of professional men that operated generally in the style of our clubs practice today. Each time Dr Smedley was transferred to various YMCA, he started new clubs and usually the clubs disbanded after he left. It went on like this until October 1924, when "SANTA ANA SMEDLEY CLUB NUMBER: 1" held its first meeting and that club is still thriving and today, that Organization flourishes under the Toastmasters and we are carrying on the legacy of Dr Ralph C. Smedley.

Dr Ralph C Smedly A speech without a specific purpose is like a journey without a destination. Dr Ralph C Smedly

Small Man with a BIG Heart

o Late

Mr. Chandra Liyanarachchi

We are carring on the legacy of Dr. Ralph C. Smedley “Since April 1998, SLCS have developed more than 100 Toastmasters”

Since Toastmasters Clubs did not mix the weaker sex, some wives and sweethearts of Toastmasters formed a parallel organization termed "Toastmistress" in 1930 and after many attempts and agitation, by 1937 they made an appeal to the Toastmasters that they also need recognition. Since Toastmasters were pledged to help others, the International Toastmistress Organization was incorporated in 1939 and the women became Toastmasters since then.

WHAT IS TOASTMASTERS AND WHAT THEY DO Toastmasters is a program that helps every men and women of all walks of life develop their personality through: Competent Communication Competent Leadership Improvement to your speaking voice Enhancement of natural body gestures,

Some senior members of SLCS those days. Only two DTM Rizvi & ACS Mohd Salie are still continuing as active members. And by helping individuals develop these, almost 280,000 members have benefited throughout the Globe by growing 13,500 clubs in almost 116 countries. Dr Ralph Smedley's "basement brainstorm" continues to thrive. Mr Chandra Liyanarachchi, a veteran member of Sri Lanka Club was a member of Manama Toastmasters Club and during his Vice President period of parent club in club in 1998, he brought up the idea of introducing this wonderful education program to Sri Lanka Club so that our community can improve their communication and leadership skills. With the help of two other senior Toastmasters, namely DTM Clement Fernando and TM Sarath Goonetileke, the birth of Sri Lanka Club Symposium Toastmasters club occurred in April 1998. SLCS Toastmasters Club was the third Toastmasters Club in Bahrain and now we have almost sixty clubs on this Island. Since April 1998, SLCS have developed more than 100 Toastmasters and has the proud reputation of producing excellent leaders to serve our community. SLCS have conducted many Youth Leadership Programs and is now maintaining one of the best Gavel Clubs on the Island, counseled by DTM Ahmed Rizvi. Effective evaluation

In the fall of 1904, Dr Ralph C Smedley became the Director of YMCA at Bloomington, Illinois and organized a club of older high school students for training in public speaking, something that was not offered in the public schools of those days. George S. Sutton, General Secretary of the Bloomington YMCA suggested the name "Toastmasters Club" because the meeting stimulated a formal banquet. Two years later Dr Smedley moved to Freeport and as General Secretary of YMCA there, he organized another club and the participants ran with the idea.

THE 3 “R” S OF EVALUATING

Review, Reward and Respond

According to David Hobson DTM,

“Evaluations are the lifeblood of toastmasters meetings; they are what keep members coming back for more.” He is right. Toastmasters Club is the place where the members learn their trade. Where else would this be more apparent than in an evaluation session. In an evaluation, the evaluator carefully listens to the speaker, watches closely and provides the scope for improvement for the speaker. He provides this in an encouraging way. The evaluator has to realize that speaker has put in a lot of effort, and has gone through a long period of thought and effort. The hard work must be recognized, if a speaker is to be persuaded to give his next speech with commitment and enthusiasm. This is how the cycle of speech and evaluation takes place. Indeed the evaluator has to Review, Reward, and Respond. The reason for the speaker to make that speech should be known before hand, so reference can be made to that objective, in reviewing the speech. In a typical Toastmasters meeting, the Speaker will be making a project speech, from a manual, which describes the objective of the speech. It also contains the questions addressed to the evaluator, which would help the evaluation. Even in non project speeches, the evaluator should ask the speaker about speech objectives. Once it is known, it will be easy to compare and to point out the extent to which the speaker has met the objective. It may look like obvious, but too many evaluators miss this important point. It will also make the speaker receptive to the evaluation and feel that it has added value . So the first point is that evaluation set the speech against the objective of the speech. Once the speech has been reviewed, the speaker has to be rewarded. And the simple one would be to say the speakers have met the objective of the speech, or a significant part of the objective etc. The evaluator should always pick the good aspects of the speech first, and praise them. http://slcs.toastmastersclubs.org

http://slcs.toastmastersclubs.org

This works wonders for a speaker as he/she is recognized and also encouraged. Some of the words that can be used to praise the speaker are : Admirable, animated, appealing, articulate, balanced, candid, charming, commanding, confident, creative, dazzling, dramatic, electrifying, enjoyable, entertaining, explicit, fantastic, finest, forceful, gripping, honest humble, imaginative, inspiring, jovial, knowledgeable, lively, natural, noteworthy, organized, passionate, penetrating, persuasive, pleasant, precise, realistic, resourceful, self assured, sensitive, sharp, sincere, skilled, suggestive, supportive, sympathetic, tactful, thrilling, timely, understandable, upbeat, useful, valuable, vibrant, warm, witty, zestful. There are many more. Using these words will make the evaluation specific, while also encouraging the speaker. The second point therefore is that the speaker should be rewarded. The third role of the evaluator is to respond to the speaker, analyzing what you heard, saw and felt. This includes the message, the words used, and how effective they were; the gestures used and how natural they were; and the feelings that were evoked and how the evaluator’s feelings were affected. The evaluator should actually refer to the actual situation so the speaker can follow what is said, and more importantly what the evaluator would recommend where improvements are needed, these involve facial expressions, the eye contacts made by the speaker, and eye contacts. In effect the evaluator should not only point out the improvements, he should also state how the improvements suggested would improve communication.

MOH’D SALIE ACG/ALB SLCS MENTOR

It is very difficult to state everything in the usual three minutes evaluation time , so he should select the most important points to emphasize and those which would improve the effectiveness of the speech. This is where the language will come into assistance. The language should be such that it should be precise and not verbose.

Evaluator works in different ways: as a motivator, as a facilitator and as counselor. The evaluator has to provide honest reaction in a constructive way. The evaluation need not be too detailed, but it should mention what the speaker did well, something that could be improved and specific recommendation for improvement. Review, reward and respond will help in that direction.

Evaluator works in different ways

BEST OF THE BEST

WINNING SPEECH SESSION 401- GETTING THERE.... ACS-PROJECT 3 BY TM SANJAYA SENARATNE Three years ago, following an accident I was bedridden, was in agonizing pain. When I went to bed, I didn’t know whether I would see the sunlight the following day. Most of you here, know what I went through. After two months of sick leave when I returned to office, I was told that I would no longer work in my old job.The Company had changed my role. I reluctantly approached my superior, and asked Why! “Cheer up & you should be happy” he said, you are given a brand new dept.! Reporting to the CEO. How could this be! The CEO himself was new who had no clue about me except that I was a sick man. My boss was cold & ruthless ….. I had no choice, It was either take it or leave it! I was dumb folded! Walked slowly to my office, looking blank not knowing what to do. I was lost. After a long pause …...I looked at the internet, spoke to some friends, and made up my mind – to take it as a challenge. (Not that I had any other choice!) My role had changed I had now to review business processes and policies for each department and improve them. It was not a simple task. There are 9 departments in the company Finance, Purchasing, Warehouse, Operations, IT etc. I had to challenge the department heads telling them what they do is not the best thing and convince them to agree to what I proposed. Just like….. I had to select my own team, setup a division and deliver. I was given a month to sort things. !!! Yet, I made that confession “Yes I am going to do it”.Because I know I am “different”. Dear Toastmasters, Time passed by: Very slowly and gradually I got over the pressure. Step by step the new department gathered momentum. People started to have faith in me, they took my recommendations well.

http://slcs.toastmastersclubs.org

http://slcs.toastmastersclubs.org

“Success is not taking big steps towards the future, Success is taking small steps now so your future takes shape in small steps………” The game changed!!! Pressure moved from my side to theirs. I was busy like a bee and soon I realized that I have transformed myself to different person. I was driven by facts and not fiction, not do things for the sake of doing. Things had changed radically.

Sanjaya Senaratne,ACB|CL AREA GOVERNOR-AREA 46

Success is how much you can bounce back when you hit the rock bottom!

Fellow TMs !what were my strengths ? Communication and Leadership!!! As you know I don’t have any formal qualification in these fields, my mentors were you! You taught me, you guided me, you evaluated &sharpened my skills. It is this platform of toastmasters that gave me the tools to face that challenge. If you could do all that for me, why not help yourselves !!! Slowly but surely, the corporate goals became my Goals, too. The company performance became my own performance goals. Here is an example. By supporting the company to achieve it’s goals, your personal goals will take shape. Just like what happened to me. Finally My dear friends, I leave you on this note: Opportunities don’t come often and when it does grab them with both hands. Give your fullest and the results will be guaranteed.

“LAND LIKE NO OTHER - BEAUTY OF THE NATURE” SESSION 400- TM DUSHAN “The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams” Eleanor Roosevelt

Master of Ceremonies, Fellow Toastmasters and guests I dreamt to join a hotel in Sri Lanka. When I got appointed as an accounts executive in Yala Village hotel head office in Colombo, I felt my dream has come true although it was a new challenge for me. After two weeks, our admin manager Suranjith told me to get ready for a monthly audit at Yala hotel. We had to leave next day. Until that time, I have never been to the wild life park and only seen the pictures of the Hotel. We took the Rathnapura/ Udwalwe road, specially because of the sceneries which I could enjoy as a fresher. Our engineer Carlo also joined with us. I got the front seat as a first timer to enjoy the moment. I saw Suranjith bring all his classic English music collection with him. I know for sure, it’s going to be class classic music on the way. I was told that it will take around 6 hours to reach our destination. “Climate is what we expect, weather is what we get.” When we reached Rathnapura, the beautiful city of gems, we got caught with heavy rain. Although it slowed our proceedings, I enjoyed the beautiful nature of mountains under rain. Going through the gloomy weather we reached udawalawa dam. Thanks god, rain already stopped. We stopped our pickup to enjoy that beautiful sunset. Then suddenly, I saw a wild elephant for the first time in my life. When others saw my excitement, they laughed at me. When I asked the reason, they told that those elephants have now become domestic animals in udawalawa area. Because people like to feed them, they always wait near to electric fences. My happiness vanished in a moment, like a stone thrown into a deep valley. http://slcs.toastmastersclubs.org

.After six hours we reached Yala town. Then they told me Hotel is still 30 min away inside jungle. I got mad, but they assured it’s the best part of the journey. When we entered the gavel road towards Yala jungle, suddenly Suranjith stopped the pickup. I thought it was a break down. But it was a different story; he sensed some wild elephants moving near to road. So we had to wait till they leave. I looked either side, using night vision but only saw a rabbit. I thought they just wanted to rag me. But within seconds a baby elephant ran across the road followed by parents. My heart shattered into pieces like a glass bowl that was dropped on the floor. If we move they will attack us. But I wondered how they knew the presence of elephants. Carlo told me, if you see broken tree branches or fresh dung on the road, elephants are near. Finally we reached the hotel main gate; security staff gave us a warm welcome with cooling towels, which we desperately needed. It was a delightful scene with the illuminated Yala Hotel in the middle of dark jungle. I chose chalet no 51, which was near to back office where I was planning to work till late hours. I got warning from security that elephants trespass the hotel premises at night. It certainly added fear to my mind. Yala village Hotel is a 4 star ranking resortwith 51chalets in the wild where the wildlife roams through the hotel compound, giving a true Jungle feel. Wild boars come almost to your door step early in the morning. Also, this is AN ECO RESORT, so no pretty walkways, only gravel footpaths leading to chalets. What you have is jungle all around. The hotel staff was very helpful.

TM DUSHAN KANCHANA [4TH PROJECT CC]

They escorted me to the room after dark, as there were occasionally prowling Elephants. I was bit thin those days and even a prowling rabbit could do me great harm. The hotel has preserved the environment through recycling, and can be considered to be eco-friendly. Although the beach was near, we couldn’t swim due to rough seas. But still the beach was dramatic and great to walk along. Just keep your eyes open for animals and remember they are wild. The next day, GM invited me for safari. I heard that The Yala National Park is the best in whole South Asia. We began our safari, the roads were bumpy and dusty, and the wild life was incredible. There are ample herds of elephants, spotted deer, jackal, mongoose, monkeys, wild bows, crocodiles, want to be seen. We didn’t see the elusive leopard &seasonal sloth bear during our 2 & half hour Safari. But there were many Peacocks, jungle fowl, cranes & lot of other birds. After dusty safari we rushed to the hotel to get a good chilled outing in pool. Although it was a short visit; I will never forget my first visit to Yala village hotel because, it was entertaining, energizing and exciting. It’s really “The Land like no other – Beauty of the nature “

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW 6. What steps you have been taken to overcome those challengers? As other organization we also have difficulties in finance to run our club smoothly. We are not a corporate club. We have to cover up all the expenses only from membership fees. For example refreshment, club assets, awards night and installation ceremony. we charge very minimal amount from members, with which we cannot really afford to meet all those expenses. SLCS toastmasters organize the Talent Nite every year, income from which helps us to finance our activities. Some event like Joint meetings are funded by individuals.

Editor TM Dushan with SLCS president in an exclusive interview... 1. Mr. President Can you remember your feelings in first day of toastmasters?

Yes TM Dushan, before I never knew about Toastmasters. What I thought is, it is also same like anyother forum. But their program, dress code, time management, setup and arrangement gave me a different feeling. Still I can remember, I was nervous on that day. However, the way others were performed, I realized that is the only place I can improve myself. Then I thought of joining the toastmasters. 2. What are the golden moments in your TM carrier?

In 2011, when I got the 3rd place of humorous speech contest in Area 46 competing with four clubs. After that I became the winner of International speech contest in our club. Again I got the first place in the humorous speech contest which we had recently. The biggest milestone is I becoming the president of SLCS Year 2013-2014.

4. As a newly elected president, how you comment on the SLCS journey so far? First I must thank all our seniors for their dedication and guidance. Without their support and enthusiasm we cannot celebrate our fifteen years anniversary today. Still I can remember Late TM Chandra Liyanaarachchi, how dedicated he was to bring our club to this level. I’m proud to say still we have seniors like DTM Ahmed Rizvi & TM Moh’d Salie guiding us. SLCS is flourishing day by day . Our members have gone beyond the club level and holding key positions in area and division. Recently lots of newcomers joined SLCS and they all are potential leaders. I can see SLCS has a bright future and it can go a long journey. 5. What are the challenges faced in this SLCS today? Mostly we face difficulties like... • Club Funds • Bringing New members • Maintaining the membership strength

3. What drives you to achieve success? Nothing else than dedication and preparation. SRI LANKA CLUB SYMPOSIUM

Bringing new members and retaining them. In this aspect we have targeted many Sri Lankans who are in Bahrain to become members in SLCS. We know there are many people who need to improve their public speaking skills, unfortunately they never come forward. Learning is a endless process. Some members they lose the interest of toastmaster due to personal commitments. In toastmasters, whatever you do it your best way. Otherwise you will feel toastmaster will not help to improve. That is why on the halfway many members give up. But symposium has taken enough measures to bring in new members and keep them active. We have identified where members need to improve. For that we conduct various workshops and mentoring programs. We attend non toastmasters events and promote toastmasters. We organized members’ talent show for non members. We share toastmaster promotional items among non members.

Issue July-September 2013 7. What measures do toastmaster communication and leadership development take to deliver shared value to its stakeholders?

Toastmasters is a communication & leadership development program. We have given opportunity to every member to develop their communication and leadership skill from symposium. Following leadership and communication tracks members can improve and archive up to distinguish toastmaster (DTM). 8. What would you rate as the toastmaster’s main strength, & how can SLCS members capitalize on this?

Again I would like to mention about communication. Communication is the main thing. May be you have good leadership qualities. But if you don’t know how to communicate, then you cannot become a good leader. In toastmasters we learn that communication is key to Leadership. Communication and Leadership are two main ingredients that our members can capitalize on.

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW 10 Time to say thank you for people behind your success? Yes. There are many people behind of my success. First I have to remember my mentor late Mr. Chandra Liyanaarchchi always who guided me. Also I extend my sincere thanks TM Emil Fernando who persuade me to join with Toastmasters. I’m thankful to all the senior Toastmasters who supported and guided me. At last my EXCO and family, without their tremenSri Lanka Club Symposium dous support I cannot be a leader or Toastmasters President successful Toastmaster. When we look back the journey of SLCS it has a long history. It didn’t come up suddenly. There are many people who put their effort and dedication to success of symposium. LIVE WITH A MISSION AND VISION

My Son was a chubby boy until 17 years

when he decided to join a Gym and shed all his fatty layers. But when my son was born he was underweight and we took him to several doctors to get a treatment, but all our efforts were in vain. We moved to Bahrain and slowly he started to put on weight. The reason, he became a master of junk food. From early days he was very fond of MacDonald’s kids meal. He could remember the Macdonalds location very well, Even when we travel on a nearby street he would tap my shoulder and start singing his “famous Macdonalds Song”.

Macdonalds –MacDonald’s- Once you hear this song. You are in trouble. There are two solutions, either you should buy it immediately, or else pretend to ignore his song, but he will continue to trouble you until you buy it on the way back. As we all do, I follow the first option. You don’t need to go too far to understand the reasons why my son, other kids as well as adults like MacDonald’s ahead of other fast-food outlets Mission statement of the MacDonald’s Corporation America is To offer the fast food customer     

Forget the New Year resolutions. Instead create a strong mission and vision statement for yourself Mission statement in simple terms is the purpose of that organization. What you do, who you do it for, how and why you do it. Mission statements often help organizations to assess their operations and employees to understand their responsibilities. But a mission along would be not sufficient to excel in the modern world of competitive business. There comes the vision statement. Vision in simple terms is where you want to be in future. Vision is the powerful tool which keeps the companies moving and inspires employees. With a powerful vision employees see them as “building a cathedral” rather than laying the stones. Let me give you a very good example for the power of a Vision.

Much like businesses, we humans too have a purpose or mission in life. A personal mission / vision statement is a framework for powerful life and many recommend writing it down. A personal mission statement shall reflect your uniqueness and answer what is you life about, what do you stand for and what are the actions you are doing to uphold your purpose and values. Personal vision is a picture of you in the future. Whom you want to be what you want to do, what you want to own and the actions you want to take to reach that position. A personal vision is not created to impress others but to inspire you. Forget the New Year resolutions. Instead create a strong mission and vision statement for yourself who will keep you moving on the right direction and stay focused on the big picture even during ups and downs the life throws at you.

Have a Mission, Have a Vision, and be a great human being. TM WASANTHA KAHADUWA

In 1961 John F Kennedy, the American President made a surprise statement “ America will send a man to moon in 10 years “ This took even NASA by surprise, because they didn’t have the technology. Russians sent a man to space in 1961 and Americans were lagging behind. But it was a political necessity and it was a vision. Government ensured that all the funding for NASA was channeled towards achieving that goal and as you all know it didn’t take 10 years to achieve.

“Orators A place where you feel like all of your fears can disappear, there is no such thing as a mistake and the only thing that matters is just ‘you’ on that podium. That is what being a part of Sir Lankan Orators Gavel Club feels like. Our club is no ordinary gavel club but rather extraordinary, for each orator is like a gem, unique and different. Impressive orators are born within each meeting. They discover their stand in communicating skills and what kind of topics suit their style, tone and way of speaking. The budding gaveliers are encouraged and supported in a friendly, constructive atmosphere at our club. It helps them understand that pubic speaking is nothing to be afraid of, and that at some point when we reach beyond our fears, we see that what we can achieve is much, much more greater if only we just take that extra step in trying, along with the experienced gaveliers, mentors and our ever ready Counselor, who is always more than willing to help out. There has been a remarkable rise in the number of guests and gaveliers that have been attending our regular meetings and now approximately reaching up to more than 45 members. And it is up to those gaveliers to keep SLOG going strong. Our officers have played a vital role, in taking responsibilities along with school work. Their belief of a better club is what makes us the very best.

Gavel Club feels like. Our club is no ordinary gavel club but rather extraordinary, for each orator is like a gem, unique and different’’ Being a gavelier myself, I am ecstatic for being able to be apart of such a world recognized organization and for getting the chance to be a member of SLOG. Being a member isn’t just about attending meetings, hearing others perform their speeches and then leave. It’s about being a part of the meeting, interacting, helping others, competing in competitions and taking up responsibilities. Being the current secretary, I learned how to organize and keep track of meetings while completing my competent communicator manual. It is always exciting and nerve wrecking when it comes to competing, especially during the time of GMAC and DTAC. It is a privilege to be a contestant in GMAC 2013 with a hope of bringing pride to our beloved gavel club. SLOG has made it through thick and thin. We stuck together through tough times and came out of it with our heads held high. The glue that kept us all together was our very own councilor Toastmaster Ahmed Rizvi. The reason we are who we are, is because of him. His unending effort and dedication to this gavel club is immense. Thank you Uncle. I hope that our club will continue shining and reach greater heights in the future.

ne day a drunken man Mr. Sirisena got into a bus. He was holding a partly empty bottle of arrack under his armpit and a bag of dried fish with the other hand. The bus was fully packed and our joyful friend started squeezing through the crowd to the front of the bus. Halfway through, there was a fat lady who was wearing a sleeveless dress, standing and holding the upper bar with her huge fat arm. While passing this lady Mr. Sirisena stared at her with his blurred eyes and told… “My dear lady, either you wear a pair of jeans or put your leg down.”

A British couple came to Sri Lanka to watch the Sri Lanka –England Test Series. During 2nd Test at Dambulla, they went out and saw a Restaurant called "Steak House". The couple was very eager to have a steak after having far too many meals of rice and curry while in Galle for the First Test Match. While waiting to be served, they notice that most of the customers were having rice and curry. Anyway, the man calls up the waiter and asks for a Steak. The waiter says: "Sorry sir, we do not sell steak here". The man, asks: "How come you call this place "Steak House" if you don't serve steak". The Waiter turns around to the man and says: "Sir, we have an ELEPHANT HOUSE in Colombo but they do not sell Elephants."

WINNING SPEECH “AMMA (MOTHER)”SESSION 403 - TM PANDULA

Since an embryo conceived in a womb…….. For 260 days she under goes a period of tremendous pain and suffering, Unbearable Headaches as changes are occurring in a mother’s body with continuous release of hormones and chemicals. She can’t eat properly … every morning she struggles and vomits for nearly three months, Carrying 10 to 15 kg in her ever obtruding tummy ….. Backache… high blood pressure body aches in numerous places. Then she bears the most intolerable pain a human would ever face ……. Labour pains at the delivery of the baby. Yet she has no complaints as she under goes all the pain and suffering during her pregnancy as she is the mother of the expected baby. Mothers love is incomparable to any other feeling a living being on this planet would ever possess.

Even though she is there no more. Without a doubt this is common to all human mothers and 90% or more animal mothers …. The above song depicts the story of the mother of the song writer Senior Solicitor Ranbanda Seneviratne. Chena cultivation without a shelter, He compares to his widowed mother, and the sudden untimely rain is compared to the extreme poverty for which his mother used every possible means to avoid exposing him. There he emotionally portraits the protection, education and guidance given to him by her till he became a reputed lawyer in the country.

http://slcs.toastmastersclubs.org

http://slcs.toastmastersclubs.org

“ONCE IN A CHENA CULTIVATION A SUDDEN STORM CAME DOWN POURING AS THERE WAS NO SHELTER... MY MA... YOU COVERED ME UNTIL THE RAIN VANISHED NOT LETTING A SINGLE DROP OF RAIN FALLS ON TO ME” In the second phrase he put in to words a second torrential rain came down in terms of insult, abuse and disparage in which his wife’s love and affection washed away in the Giant Canal (Yoda Ela). Again his mother comes to console and protect him as he says how he felt the scent or the fragrance of mother’s love. The mother still is his only refuge and safe heaven. For a mother her child is always and forever is her baby whom she cared and adored, whoever he is to the outside world; even a criminal or a killer in that matter. Finally as he sees a third storm coming through as the clouds get darker over the city of Colombo and the strong cold wind comes ashore and he asks “O mother will you be there waiting for me at the hedge gate when I run to you leaving behind all the positions, grandeur and opulence?” He only knows one place where he could solicit the protection and shelter … at his mother …… even though she is there no more. This very emotional song which is often ranked as the best song ever written in Sinhala on mothers love shows the eternal love and bondage between a mother and a child which would lasts probably a few or many life times. Now it is our turn in paying a true tribute to a great mother by being a true son or a daughter as she ever wanted us to be.

“RHYTHM IN ACTION” TM Dushan Kanchana “Music in the soul can be heard by the universe” Lao Tzu

Good Evening……… We all love music. Isn’t it? Yes. Music is the universal language that people use to impress their feelings towards the society. As we know there are lots of varieties in world of music. All of these styles have their own cultures, societies & followers. Today, I am going to talk about one of the most popular cultures in the world of music. It has many names but sweet & short it’s called rap or hip hop. There is no written history about the origin of rap music. But most popular belief is that it came from Africa. In 19th century, slave business was very popular throughout the world. Black Africans were the main victims of that trade. Rap was the way they used to express their feelings to others. Rapping can be delivered over a beat or without accompaniment. Stylistically, rap occupies a grey area between speech, prose, poetry, and singing. The word as used to describe quick speech or repartee predates the musical form. This was very similar to our own poetries what we call kavi. It also uses to express people’s feelings like love, happiness or sadness. Because our elders were living in a more peaceful & friendlier society, outcome of their feelings were also very smooth & polite. Africans & Caribbean’s didn’t have that much freedom in their life. They choose a harder way in rap rhymes often addressing provocative subjects such as sex, violence and socio-political issues.

Rapping first gained popularity in the U.S. in the 1970s as a kind of street art, especially among Afro- American teenagers. But it wasn’t until 1979, when the Sugarhill Gang released their breakaway hit, ‘Rapper’s Delight, that record producers took notice of this emerging musical genre. By the 1990s, rap matured from an old-school style which was based o¬n relatively simple lyricsto a new school style, which was louder and included more complex lyrics. Artists such as The Notorious B.I.G., Snoop Dogg and Tupac ruled the charts during this time, as did Eminem one of the most popular white rappers of all time. For years, the debate has ensued about what exactly the difference is between rap music and hip hop music. Hip hop culture is defined by the late '70s. Whereas hip hop strives to push its listeners to look forward to a better tomorrow, rap music is all about "telling it like it is" in here and now.

As the time went by hip hop became a sub culture in USA. It bullied the path to vileness through the famous rivalry between East & West Coast. In 1990s both parties tried to dominate the music market with their record companies. That was the beginning of so cold gangster music. Underworld, drugs and all sorts of garbage stuff entered the scene. It cost the lives of most famous hip hop stars like Tupac & Notorious B.I.G. This rivalry continues throughout years up to now. As we all know, Americans are very good when it comes to marketing. They were spreader hip hop culture throughout world. As usual outside world welcomed it with both hands.

Rapping is not the easiest thing to do. It requires practice, knowledge & most importantly natural talent. It’s too difficult to get use that kind of culture for Asian born people like us. That’s why we always see our musicians criticizing rap. Honestly, I am not the hip hop fan but at the same time I like to follow the trend of it. Most critics are meaningless. We can’t decide whether rap or hip hop bad by just looking at Sri Lankan rappers. Most of them are freaks. There are only a handful of few genuine hip hop artists in our Music field. Hip hop got the power to change your mode. It’s not the music to listen; it’s the music to feel. Because hip-hop is the last true folk art.

Hip hop Message was more of a positive, brighter future type of ballad. Rap, on the other hand, is more concerned with what is going on in popular culture. They try to address the pathetic part of the society.
