INSIDE THIS ISSUE
“Never sacrifice happiness for achievement!” I tell you, I always love to talk to people younger than me for a few reasons. One their behavior and actions also make me feel that I am a long younger than what I am. A lot of knowledge is gained by interacting with these youngsters. They may not have the so called “experience” that my grey hair has. But they are fast and have levels of knowledge much more than me. I have been thinking about this last couple of days. I have always been trying hard for achievement, may be, we all are or may be many of us are. Are we happy in our approach to the achievements. We spent enormous amount of time preparing and working towards the goal. But when we achieve it, are we happy?? Once it is achieved there is happiness, no doubt, but very temporary. We set fresh goals and targets. While it is essential to have goals and targets, it should not be at the cost of happiness. We should learn to live our lives happy. Happiness and achievements are two different things. Happiness is more of choice rather than the result of any achievement. We could be happy by choice without even achieving all the goals. A point to note that overcoming fear is an achievement. We should celebrate for every small step that we take irrespective of all the fears that we have. Every small step which helps us in overcoming the fear should be a reason to be happy. So, my friends, start feeling happy for every moment that you have. This is the only moment you have.

Yesterday my Son told me to read a book. I searched for the book and found it. I just rushed through the pages without reading them. The book has 208 pages!! I could not read more than half a page in a day. By that it will take me almost a year plus to complete this book. But a paraphrase got my attention.

Area Contest and Beyond From the Editor’s Desk It is indeed extremely heartening that in my maiden venture as Editor of the “Voice”, I have the opportunity to proudly proclaim the winners of the Area 76 contest which was held on 21st March, 2014. The contest was well attended by ICABers displaying enthusiastic support for the participants. The hard work and dedication of the deserving contestants paid off, with ICABers stealing the show and finished the day with laurels heaped on them. ICABers finished first in 3 of the 4 contests. TM Raunaq Desai was the star performer, delivering his speeches with aplomb and panache taking home the first prize trophies for both the International Speech Contest and Humorous Speech Contest. TM Shaukat Lokhandwala was sublime and his lucid evaluation fetched him the first place for the Evaluation contest. TM Sanjay Gupta’s eloquence was once again evident in the Table Topics contest with him being placed third in that discipline. TM Sumit Dhadha displayed his flair for humour and was rewarded with a second place finish in the Humorous Speech contest. He represented the KPMG TMC in the contest. Recycle Yourself By TM Kurian What differentiates human beings from other animals? Yes it is the wisdom of differentiating and selecting good and bad. What is the one thing every human being has to face and do not like to accept. Yes it is the death, which has to be faced by everyone in the world. Good evening TMOD Guests and fellow TMs Imagine this, today you go see your physician, and he tells you “Am sorry my friend but you just have one week left.” How shocking would that be? All dreams shattered in a moment… You will have to now count your days because your life is short, very short. At this juncture what will be the most important thing you would do? Each moment of our life is like a countdown to our death. The religion of a man should always be the Humanism and not anything else. Here is an unusual story of two strange people from different faiths and different places with the hand of God uniting them in a bus. 30 year old Rashid was from a very poor family; worked as a sales person in a shop in Kerala. He was a salesman in Saudi Arabia until kidney disease cost him his sight and forced him to return home to Harippad in Kerala. Rashid, the only breadwinner for his ailing parents and minor brother, advertised for donors.. He could not take a kidney from his parents as they were old and diabetic, and his brother was also helpless as his blood group did not match with Rashid. Rashid was put on dialysis; he had to borrow money from his friends and relatives to support his treatment. Miracles do happen. It was the strong belief in God that brought Rashid his savior. . It was a miracle that on 25th February 2013, Father Sebastian, a catholic priest and Rashid, both strong believers in their faiths were sitting next to each other in a bus on their way to Kochi. Father Sebastian found his co passenger pale and weak. Upon enquiring from Rashid he got to know that Rashid was going for dialysis as both his kidneys had failed. “I was seized by the pain of a life facing death. I made a cursory query about his blood group, which matched mine,” he later stated. Father Sebastian, immediately without giving a second thought decided to give life to his young co passenger. He decided to donate one of his kidneys to his ailing co passenger. Rashid said he was initially shocked by the words of the stranger in the bus. “But, in the next moment, he realized that a priest would not lie.” It was as if God Himself appeared in front of the young man in the form of the priest and blessed him with a new life. The transplant took place in a months’ time and Rashid is now a healthy person able to do his job praying for his donor. Here is another real story. May 7 2012, 49 years old Sherly,, of Kozhikode fell down the stairs at her brother's home in Thiruvananthapuram. She had come to attend the funeral of her brother, , who was shot dead by robbers in Sudan on May 4. Sherly was taken to Hospital in the city, where the doctors found that she had suffered irreversible brain damage. Her heart and kidneys could not be harvested because she had been on medication for a blood pressure problem. Her liver, however, was in good condition. At the request of the doctors, Sherly's husband and sons agreed to donate the organ, along with her eyes. Her liver was transplanted to a 38 year old Pramod and her eyes were given to Rashmi a 20 year old blind girl. The credit for bringing on the organ donation revolution in Kerala goes to FrDavis, from Trissur, a Catholic priest. After donating one of his kidneys to a poor patient in 2009, he put forward the idea of kidney banks and crossdonation of kidneys to help hundreds of patients awaiting transplants. He set up the Kidney Federation of India to oversee the donation process and give financial help to patients in need of dialysis. It has successfully eliminated the racketeers. “A number of people are turning up for voluntary organ donation,” said Fr. Davis Dear Toast masters, we can donate few of our body parts like kidney, liver and blood whenever you want without risking our lives. I am not requesting those during your life, though you may be having a fear of risking your life. Dear friends I am requesting you all to consent for giving your body parts after your death which will otherwise become small part of sand or ash after our death. Hence we can recycle our body parts and we will be instrumental for others watching though our eyes or our heart beating through others or other people will live with some of our other organs. Yes, if we give our organs to someone, we will live in them even after our death. Even though nothing could bring us back to life, after death, other people will go on living thanks to us. Friends are you ready to donate your organs?

GW 101 By TM Mohit Malkani When we turned on the air-conditioning at home this summer, one thing which popped into my mind were the issues on global warming. Then, I was comforted by the fact that we have had just experienced a lovely winter, so why worry? Just because we are lucky not to see its adverse impact does not mean it does not exist. Let's face it: The weather is different than it used to be. Record heat waves make it impossible to go outside. Floods and rainstorms damage our homes and cities back home. Crop production is hit by severe droughts. This is the extreme weather you see almost every day on the news, luckily not yet out your window. And because of man-made climate change, we can expect it to happen a lot more often. This is Dirty Weather. We're polluting our atmosphere with Dirty Energy. The result ? The planet heats up. And we expose ourselves to Dirty Weather. Many of us are in denial, we consider “global warming” as a myth. Either we believe that it isn’t happening at all, or some of us say it may be happening but it is due to natural causes and humans have nothing to do with it, or we say to ourselves” what if there is climate change”, or those of us who have given up even without contributing their part by believing that the change in lifestyle is too difficult and it may not even make a difference and address the problem. Some of us may believe that it is a US centric problem, however that is because the voice on climate crisis comes mostly from the US and the developed world who are accused of causing the problem. The effects will be world wide in unpredictable places. And for those countries which cannot afford the climate relief budgets, people will be displaced or simply perish. US are the key contributors to carbon pollution and also the early adapters to the change. Equatorial regions will be most affected. The impact is expected to be disastrous for the next generation. “An inconvenient truth” was a book written by ex-US Vice President Al Gore in 2006. In that one of the examples he mentioned was that New York city would be submerged by the rising waters, which is exactly what occurred on 29 October 2012 with the super storm Sandy. The super storm effected livelihoods of millions in New York city, caused explosions in power plants, submerged tunnels and subways etc. The Scientific community state that Humanity has changed climate in past 100-150 years, the last time climate had changed so drastically, it was 65 million years ago when asteroids hit the earth and made the dinosaurs extinct. Extreme weather is the new reality. In the Indian context, climate crisis will have its direct impact on the agricultural produce and prices which in turn will put continuous pressure on food-grain prices which increases inflation. The lack of energy sufficiency has already been causing a fiscal deficit, it is not difficult to imagine how the lack of food self-sufficiency can exacerbate the problem. Efficient management of resources and innovating of alternatives is the only long term answer. There could be a migration of vegetation belts to higher altitudes, this is a strategic risk which could cause social unrest. Call for Action: 1. Use Your Voice 2. Tell Your Friends, Family and Networks that Climate Change Matters to You 3. Stand Up to Denial 4. Take Small Steps Eg., Use LED or CFL options instead of old light bulbs, and walk or bike instead of driving. 5. Know Your Impact. Learn what your personal carbon footprint is. Then, help your friends minimize their own carbon footprints. 6.Support the Good Guys As a consumer and a shareholder, support companies who are doing good things on climate change. Friends, we will always have bad weather. But we don't have to live with Dirty Weather. We can make the switch from dirty to clean energy ... and together, we can stop the pollution that's disrupting our climate. 7

Scars By TM Amit Shenoy
A 10-year-old Japanese boy named Ken decided to study judo despite the fact that he had lost his left arm in a car accident as he was constantly bullied by his friends. The boy began lessons with an old Japanese judo master and even after three months of training the master had taught him only one move. Ken became impatient and asked “should I not learn some more moves?”. The master said this is the “only move u need to learn”. In the biggest tournament Ken defeated his opponents easily. Amazed ken asked, “Teacher, how did I win the tournament with only one move?" ", You won for two reasons," the teacher answered. "First, you've almost mastered one of the most difficult throws in all of judo. And second, the only known defense for that move is for your opponent to grab your left arm." Ken’s biggest weakness had become his biggest strength. Many times in life we feel that we have certain weaknesses and we blame god, the circumstances and our self for it but we never know that our weakness can become our strength one day. Ken’s biggest weakness was absence of his left arm and it indeed became his biggest strength It would not be out of place to discuss what exactly is weakness? Weakness is a flaw or shortcoming that increases risk of failure, which can be actual or perceived shortcoming. Let me give an example. I might be having 2 legs but not willing to walk or I might be willing to walk but might be not capable of walking. So when I lack either the ability or willingness to do something Weakness crops out. Next pertinent question is what to do to overcome weakness. First step always is to admit and acknowledge the weakness. The next step is to resolve to overcome it and 3rd step is strategize and implement the outcome. When I cleared my 10th grade I had a weakness which bothered me a lot. I was brought up in a small town with modest background and had grown up with colloquial kids and could not speak a single sentence in English. To my rescue came my hero, my mentor, my dad. He gave me simple ABC to overcome this weakness. A for action, B for belief and C for continuous improvement, he told be first and foremost believe this weakness can be overcome. Then act relentlessly to overcome it and then work hard continuously. With my most trusted mentor on my side, I started to make attempt to think in English. My Dad advised me to read Times of India daily for 1 hour and watch English news for half an hour. When I continuously did this for 2 years post my 10th standard, I was fairly successful in overcoming this weakness. I believed and made a promise to myself that I will continuously try to overcome this and that is also one reason why you all see me standing here and delivering this speech. Every day I said myself – It’s possible. Its possible My darling mentor Anil also has a flaw and that flaw shines.... Anil does not use a fancy hair style to cover his shine... he rather uses a hair style that emphasizes the shine that makes him look younger. Another beautiful example of overcoming a flaw… an example which can be instantly replicated. Edison said “Our greatest weakness lies in giving up. The most certain way to succeed is always to try just one more time”. Each one of us have many weaknesses, which I call Scars. Scars which we try to hide from outside world. If we would not have that weakness, those scars, we would have been Gods. But then each one of us has a responsibility to identify and work on our flaws and I am sure that if we work in a focused manner we can easily turn these Scars into Stars…

Fear By TM Sumit Dhadha Fear of failure Are you afraid to fail? If so, your fear of failure is likely to limit your chances of success. If you look at really successful people, you will often find significant failures in their backgrounds. The list is long and includes college dropouts, such as Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, and Mark Zukerberg. Why? There are many reasons. Most stem from the fact that they are (1) willing to try new things, (2) not afraid to “rock the boat,” and (3) able to turn negatives into positives and learn from their mistakes. “There is only one thing that makes a dream impossible to achieve: the fear of failure.” Paulo Coelho Failure, it's one of those things that even the strongest, most intelligent, most confident of us fear. Whether it's starting a new endeavor or succeeding at the one we're currently in, it's difficult to escape the concern in the back of our mind that we might mess it up. Some people hold the mindset of "failure isn't an option," and others lean towards the idea that "the only way to fail is by not trying." I strongly hold to the latter mindset, and believe that that's the best way to flourish in both your professional and personal life. Failure is a great teacher Everyone fails, but successful people react differently to failure than unsuccessful people. Successful people don’t like to fail, but they are not devastated or paralyzed by failure. They use failure as a tool to learn what they did wrong. After they “fall off the horse,” they pick themselves up, dust themselves off, and get back on the horse to try again. Unsuccessful people are paralyzed by failure. They are afraid to try again because they fear failing again. They tend to play it safe and do everything “by the book” even if the book is outdated and does not work anymore. The tragedy of Kodak Once a great company, Kodak, was too focused on the past. Looking back at its past successes, it decided to play it safe, and do whatever it could to protect its core film business. As a result, it failed to capitalize on the digital camera technology that its own engineers invented. If Kodak had a good marketing information system, it would have realized that competitors would use digital camera technology to put them out of business if they did not beat their rivals to the punch. Once great Kodak has filed for bankruptcy – not too long after Polaroid suffered a similar fate. Nokia and RIM Nokia was the leader in mobile phones and kept that crown for 14 years. Its market share peaked at 40.4% at the end of 2007 – not long after Apple introduced the iPhone. Nokia’s research arm invented a color touchscreen mobile phone seven years before Apple introduced the iPhone. The company was too invested in protecting its successful past and too afraid to enter the uncharted waters of the touch screen smartphone. Once the leader in smartphones with its Blackberry phone (nicknamed the Crackberry), RIM has been pronounced dead by tech expert, Shelly Palmer, who loved every Blackberry he has ever owned. As with Nokia, RIM “fell in love” with itself, was product-driven, and believed that its success was a given and would last forever. Success is a lousy teacher Kodak, RIM, and Nokia are all guilty of the same issue – failing to innovate because of their fear of failing. As Bill Gates is fond of saying, “Success is a lousy teacher. It seduces smart people into thinking they can't lose.” Good advice from the Wall Street Journal There are two posters published by the Wall Street Journal that I would like to share with you: Don’t be afraid to fail You’ve failed many times, although you may not remember. You fell down the first time you tried to walk. You almost drowned the first time you tried to swim. Did you hit the ball the first time you swung a bat? Heavy hitters, the ones who hit the most home runs, also strike out a lot. Don’t worry about failure. Worry about the chances you miss when you don’t even try. Aim high enough so you will never be bored The greatest waste of our natural resources is the number of people who never achieve their potential. Get out of that slow lane. If you think you can’t, you won’t. If you think you can, there’s a good chance you will. Even making the effort is likely to make you feel like a new person. Reputations are made by searching for things that can’t be done and doing them. "Never confuse a single defeat with a final defeat." F. Scott Fitzgerald Always remember that failure is not the opposite of success, it is a part of success. I hope you keep trying, and I wish you the best of luck. 9

Kapalbhati Pranayama By TM Sandeep Sharma Is there anybody here who doesn’t want to be healthy? Everyone wants to be healthy. Famous saying Health is wealth cannot be denied which we learnt from our childhood. Today I will be speaking on the subject related to yoga on Kapalbhati Pranayama. Kapalbhati is an important breathing exercise invented by Indian yogis thousands years ago. It is Sanjeevani on earth very easy to do and when done regularly the benefits are tremendous. Kapal in Sanskrit means FOREHEAD and Bhati in Sanskrit means SHINING or light .It can be done by sitting in Padmasana. It consists of short powerful exhales and passive inhales.Kapalbhati is highly energizing abdominal breathing exercise through which all diseases disappears and body becomes pure, healthy and happy. Yoga is nothing but an ancient Indian art that has been practiced and taught by sages. I am personally benefitted which helps me in maintaining my weight and health. Best time to practice in morning along with empty stomach or after 5 hours of having food to get all its benefits. What we do in Kapalbhati Pranayama? In Kapalabhati we do quick exhalation and natural inhalation. Normally exhalation takes one fourth of the time of inhalation. Quick exhalation and natural inhalation follow each other. How to do Kapalbhati Pranayama? Step 1) Sit in comfortable crossed leg position with Back straight. Hands resting on knees in either chin or gyana mudra. Face to be relaxed. Step 2) Inhale deeply through nostril, expanding abdomen and exhale with the forceful contraction of abdominal muscles Step 3) After exhalation again inhalation but inhalation should not involve any effort. To inhale just relax and the lungs will automatically expand and filled with air. One can begin with 15 respirations. After completing 15 quick exhalation and natural inhalation inhale and exhale deeply. This is one round. One can start the practice of Kapalbhati pranayama with 3 such rounds for practice. Benefits of Kapalabhati 1) Kapalabhati cleanses the lungs and entire respiratory system and it adds luster and beauty to our face. 2) The blood is purified and body gets an increased supply of oxygen to all cells. 3) Digestion is improved. 4) Abdominal muscles are strengthened. 5) Prepare the mind for meditation. 6) Energize the mind for mental work & helps to detoxify lungs and respiratory tracks. Boosts the supply of oxygen and purifies blood. 7) Helps to tone up the abdominal muscles. It is also helpful in reducing belly fat. It helps flush toxins and waste out of your body. Precautions: Kapalbhati should not be practice by those a) Suffering from heart disease, high blood pressure, Hernia or when asthmatic attack is in progress. b) If pain or dizziness is experienced, it is preferable to stop the practice c) Quick exhalation should be comfortable to oneself. i.e. quick exhalation should not be too forceful. Point to Note: a) Exercise should not be done if you are feeling uncomfortable at any time during the exercise. b) Rapid breathing used in this technique should be from the abdomen and not from the chest. c) It is always good that in the beginning one should learn this exercise with yoga teacher. Kapalbhati pranayama is practiced before meditation. It improvises concentration span and helps to stay away from unwanted thoughts while practicing meditation. Practicing pranayama in the fresh air is beneficial. Pranayama is all about concentrating on our breathing pattern and learning to breathe the right way. Living stress-free life is possible with regular practice of pranayama. Famous Saying of wise man: Live as if you were to die tomorrow. Learn as if you were to live forever. “There are only two mistakes one can make along the road to truth; not going all the way, and not starting.” 10

Think Different By TM Radesh It was a rainy day in late 1990’s as usual all the roads were flooded with water, suddenly there was a bright lighting in the sky with big sound duuuummmm, O! that took off the power, the city was colored with black and the heavy rain helped to add more darkness. However I managed to take the required files and working papers for tomorrow’s hearing with Income Tax Commissioner for one of my client that papers filed the entire back seat of my car. I started driving slowly with more cautiously and mentally preparing for tomorrow’s hearings. After a while I saw an old woman lonely sliding on the bus stop pillar, her face was familiar to me, I stopped the car and ran towards her, she was Sitama, who runs a home canteen where I take my lunch most of the days. I helped her to stand, her body was boiling like hot water, she was alone therefore I decided to take her to the hospital. Hey…. Radesh….someone was calling from back, that was Dr. Ramamoorthy, a famous heart specialist in the city, once he saved my beloved uncle’s life. He continued with his energetic voice that his car got struck and he wanted to reach the hospital urgently to attend an emergency. I can help any one of them as my car back seat was filed with important files and papers, I can take any one of them in my front seat but both of them are very important to me, one side, Sitama, who providing the food with love and affection, standing alone with shivering body on the other hand the great cardiologist who saved my uncle’s life and even a minute delay causes questioning that emergency patient’s life. What to do, I was totally confused but I have to decide immediately left or right. That time I got a call which added further confusion. Yes… that was from my fiancée, she was stuck badly nearby for more than an hour, she has to reach home and complete her thesis which has to be submitted tomorrow otherwise she will lose her internal mark and without listening to me she hanged the phone with “hurry up dear” Now the position was worse, to whom can I offer my help, The old woman, Sitama, The Doctor or My fiancée all are very important to me but I can take any one. Who was that, that was the million dollar question? I prayed to God to help me, I was literally crying inside the heart and analyzing the various permutation and combination but to no avail, but I tried again, Yahh… yes I got the way. I took my car key, gave it to the doctor and asked him to admit old Sitama in his hospital. Then I walked nearby to see my fiancée and we was waiting for me to take her home. I believe everyone might have had such experience of “THINK DIFFERENT”. We know think different means Think out of the box, Break the Rule, Break the Traditional way of Thinking. Do you think “ Break the Rule “ is the rule to think differently. No, . if break the rule is the rule, you are breaking the break the rule so you will not follow, on other hand “ Break the rule “ is not a rule then you will not break any rule, you think on the same fashion. Hope all are confused , yes this confusion will lead you to think differently. A wise man will be the master of his mind by thinking different, a fool will be its Slave and follow thoughts of others, let you be the master of your mind.
