Meet Some Of The Exclusive Providers In DISTRICT32

District32 Official Launch Makes Some Noise Inspiration, education, networking and laughter were the order of the day at District32’s official launch on 10th April. More than 130 small business owners packed the room to hear how District32 was already uniting businesses to fight tough market conditions by providing ideas for increasing turnover, improving efficiencies and building connections. Held at the Woodvale Reception Centre, the half day event included a line-up of six high-calibre speakers including Neil Butler from Edith Cowan University, Patria Jafferies, co-founder of Dome Coffees Australia, Lisa Spark, Director of Quality Printer and Cartridges and Evan Porter from Priority Perth. The room was energised following a laughter yoga session delivered by Peter Schupp of Kaizen Wellbeing which saw everyone up on their feet, stretching and laughing in unison. The innovative session was a networking ice-breaker and a way of teaching people how to improve their overall well-being. Neil Butler’s advice to business owners on how to leverage the huge pool of talent available at Edith Cowan University for no cost to develop their

businesses was well received. “I have presented at events internationally and domestically but truly feel that the atmosphere at the event was second to none. I have already received 49 emails relating to my presentation,” Neil Butler said. Patria Jafferies, co-founder of Dome Coffees shared her inspirational story to a raptured audience, many of whom admitted holding back tears. “I think the concept of District32 is important to communities and if we can get people having the dialogue, I think it’s really important,” Patria Jafferies said. District32 CEO, Lorraine Garvie, said “The feedback from the event was extremely positive, we gave small businesses ideas and inspiration to take away which they can easily implement into their businesses and their lives. The clients we are working with at present have benefited from our knowledge, experience and the network around us. We’re pleased to say they are already reaping the rewards, even at this early stage.” Using the results of the event feedback surveys, District32 is currently planning a range of networking events and advice workshops designed to help small business owners increase exposure, growth, competitive advantage and profitability.

Introducing Jacqueline Campbell From Indoor Air Quality Solutions, A District32 Exclusive Provider From Zone N 1. Please introduce your business, yourself and the team behind you We are Indoor Air Quality Solutions (IAQS) and we fix mould and other indoor air quality problems.

How to Memorize Facts There are sure-fire methods of ensuring that you can memorize facts, something that students in particular very much rely on, according to cognitive psychologists. Many teachers already recommend studying up to three nights before an exam or major test, and science agrees with them. Experts say that most people tend to underestimate the number of times they will need to revise something before it actually sticks, with five to seven times being the number recommended by those in the know. However, it is a bad idea to constantly go over the same bits of the textbook during the one study session. It is also a good idea to break up study sessions into smaller sections and different topics; variety is important to avoid overkill and burnout on any one subject, but some downtime is also essential to make sure the same does not happen with study in general.

The IAQS team are passionate people with a genuine desire to understand our clients’ concerns. We then provide effective, practical solutions to health issues associated with indoor pollutants like water damage, mould and chemicals. We work with clients to identify and remove indoor pollutants, partner with industry to help create pollutant-free indoor environments and share our knowledge so people can make informed decisions and our industry can grow. 2. What services do you offer and to who? IAQS provides a wide range of ‘problem specific’ investigation, testing and specialist cleaning services to residential, commercial and industrial clients. IAQS can complete detailed building inspections on behalf of rental tenants or the building owner including air and surface mould sampling to identify the exact infestation of mould species. Air-conditioning systems can spread biological contamination through homes and work places and IAQS can identify the microbial contamination and fix the problem. 3. What aspect of your business are you most passionate about? While only a small number of our

clients are chronically unwell when they contact us, finding a way to help them is, without a doubt, the motivation that drives me. When we can find workable solutions that allow them to recover makes all the chronicling of industrial IAQ compliance data worthwhile. 4. What does customer service mean to you and how do you demonstrate it in your business? To us customer service is all about listening. People often contact us when they are concerned something is affecting the health of their family, friend or work colleagues so the most important thing we can do is listen. Effective solutions to people’s concerns are not ‘one size fits all’ and good customer service is all about finding solutions that are appropriate to the situation. 5. Why do you think it’s important to support local? We are a small business that provides a specialist service. We often rely on other businesses to help us service clients quickly so if we don’t support local businesses there is a risk that these businesses won’t be around the next time we need them. 6. What has been your experience of being part of District32 so far? We are now part of something much bigger with a network of people that know how to do all the things that we don’t. We’ve learned the mysteries of effective print media, how to offer low interest finance and a new offering to take to market. We haven’t just ‘joined’ District32 we honestly feel like we have partnered for success.

Jacqueline Campbell - IAQS Contacts I have made numerous contacts across a wide variety of business areas since being a member of District32 – some have been great for the development of IAQS, others have been able to add value to their business through our knowledge and services and the rest have been most important of all – they are the ones that are great for chatting, validating ideas and keeping me sane.

Referrals/ Closed Business All the referrals we have received through District32 have been high quality, qualified leads – and pretty close to our ‘ideal client’. We have been able to follow up quickly and convert the lead to a sale which has worked for both us and the client. We have the sale and the client has their mould, water damage, or other indoor air quality problem rapidly and effectively resolved.

Networking & Events The networking events I have attended have been well organised, well attended and well worthwhile!!! Every member of District32 is very genuine about contributing to the success of small business in Perth and that is quite evident at the networking events where people take the opportunity to engage with one another, share ideas and experiences, and work out where synergies lie. There are a number of ‘cohorts’ that are developing, supporting and cross-referring each other. But, unlike other networking experiences I have had, these groups do not seem to develop

that ‘we are full’ mentality. There is an appreciation that even though two people may work in the same field – no two people are truly alike so taking the time to get to know them and how they approach their work is always rewarding.

Mentoring & Support The mentoring and support IAQS has received from the District32 team has been second to none – the District32 team really complement each other in skills and experience and are fantastically generous with both their time and knowledge. They have taken the time to understand what IAQS does and, more importantly, why we do it so the advice and coaching they have provided has been truly problem specific and relevant to us rather than the generalised ‘this step comes next... works for most people’ journey that we were previously taking.

Education The range of educational workshops and seminars is broad, specifically relevant to small business development and the de-mystifying of the foundation skills of successfully and efficiently, running a small business. The most useful to me so far have been the sessions on the effective use of social media as a business marketing tool and how a good CRM system, set up properly, can save you hours of time and increase your sales through solid follow-up processes.

Four Compelling Reasons To Shop Local Shopping at small, local and independent businesses can occasionally mean paying a little more or visiting multiple shops rather than shopping at a superstore giant but it does have its benefits. Check out these four reasons to spend your hard-earned money at local shops. 1. Superior Customer Service At a little local shop, you are more than just another customer. To a local shop owner each customer is the lifeblood of their business. You often get to talk to the same person each time you visit and after time they may learn your name or ask after the family. When you telephone, your call is answered by a human every time. There is no automated phone system and transferring your call to a supervisor like the big corporations do. 2. Know Your Seller Personally When you purchase a product from a major brand, everything you know about the company has been sifted through PR and marketing staff. You are fed the values they want you to see and the message they want you to hear. When you shop local, you actually know the person you are

buying from. You may run into your local shop owner while filling up your car, having lunch at a local restaurant or at your kids’ sports game. 3. Competition Having a wide variety of shops in an area gives consumers choice and choice leads to competition on price. By supporting small local shops, you help keep them in business. If all the smaller shops close, multinationals can increase prices knowing consumers have no other choice. By choosing local you are making a long-term difference in keeping prices lower. 4. Building the Local Community Buying local means keeping local money within the community, and that benefits everyone in the area. When local businesses seek each other out for purchases before chain stores, the benefits can be both to the companies involved as well as the individuals. You can have better business relationships with people that you speak face-to-face to by simply driving across town. Plus, local store owners often become close friends as they help each other’s business to thrive.

Take Two Paths To Business Stress Reduction Stress may be unavoidable in your business, but you can still reduce its negative impact with some healthy mental and physical habits. Try these techniques for focusing your mind and your body in a better direction: 1. Practice mindfulness. You relieve the pressures of daily life temporarily by slowing down. Pay attention to the present moment, without worrying about the future, what’s fair, what’s good or bad, and so on. Walk a little more slowly to work, listening to your body for signs of tension. Take a few slow, deep breaths as you wait for the elevator or while you sit at your desk waiting for Web pages to load. Focus on what your body is telling you, and you’ll be able to manage its responses to pressure more effectively, instead of allowing stress to control you. 2. Get enough exercise. Physical activity focuses your energy outward. Exercise also strengthens your immune system. A vigorous walk at lunch can do wonders for your stress levels. A regular workout— swimming, bike riding, weight training—can help you manage stress better over the long term. Don’t forget low-impact techniques such as yoga, tai chi, and other stress 0403 444that 660 relievers emphasize penny@pinkpiranha.com.au stretching and reducing www.pinkpiranha.com.au muscle tension.

Give your business image a facelift Most businesses require some element of design over a period of time. The majority of this is required when a business is starting out, but further refinements are required throughout the life of that business in one form or another. This can range from rolling out a brand, to catalogues promoting products, or campaigns and advertising. To ensure brand consistency, all design work for businesses should ideally be created by the same designer. A business deserves quality design and value for money and that’s where Pink Piranha comes into the equation.

How To Avoid Costly Mistakes When Commissioning A Promotional Video For Your Business 1) Price

3) How to Decide

Over 100 years ago John Ruskin made this now famous and very relevant statement.

Obviously everything depends on why you’re making the video and that decision determines the type of video you will need. It must also fit into an overall marketing with video strategy that will reach your target audience.

“It is unwise to pay too much, but it is also unwise to pay too little. When you pay too much, you lose a little money, that is all. When you pay too little, you sometimes lose everything because the thing you bought is incapable of doing the thing you bought it to do” The wise buyer considers all options and all available information so that they can make the best choice possible for their individual needs.

What to avoid! It is very dangerous to make a choice based on price alone.

2) Styles of Video The Internet has given small and medium businesses (SMEs) the opportunity to take full avantage of video in their marketing campaigns with many different styles of video to achieve different goals. Each style has its own benefit. • Product videos • Personal introduction videos • Explainer videos • How to videos • Educational videos

Top Tip! Have a clear understanding of what you want the video to achieve and don’t restrict your choices by selecting a producer with limited styles of video.

4) Marketing with Video Strategy

You can’t always wait for inspiration to strike. When you’re on a tight deadline and you have to produce ideas in a hurry, creativity can seem elusive—but that doesn’t mean you should just give up. Try these suggestions for capturing the spark when time is of the essence: • Eliminate distractions. You don’t have to shut yourself up in a cell, but get away from anything that competes for your attention when you need to focus. Ignore your phone, unplug the TV, close the door, or pull your Internet connection if necessary—

It’s always important to have a clear strategy before you start any new project. Your producer must be able to provide a comprehensive marketing with video strategy that is based on YOUR business and YOUR specific needs to help you reach YOUR target market.

Apple Facts

A Match Made In Heaven

Apple is one of the most successful companies in the world today, nearly four decades after its creation, but there are many quirky little facts about the firm that even its biggest cheerleaders may be unaware of. Most people think that Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak were the founders of Apple and are unaware that there was actually a third founder, Ron Wayne. Wayne was Jobs’ co-worker at Atari and was asked to help because of his greater experience and his familiarity with corporate documentation, but he sold his initial ten percent stake in Apple after just two weeks. The original Apple computer sold for the strange – and rather diabolical – price of $666.66. Apple stores are situated all over the world, yet there are actually six states in the U.S. where there is not one to be found, those states being West Virginia, North and South Dakota, Montana, Wyoming, and Vermont. California, on the other hand, has over fifty Apple stores all to itself.

I’ve long fancied myself as quite the match-maker. From my high school days I could recognise the qualities in a single friend and sniff out her perfect lonely heart. By my twenties I’d honed my skills and many a good match resulted in matrimonial harmony. In recent years I’ve realised my matchmaking talents transfer quite nicely to the business world. As a consultant in Perth’s small business community, I’ve become the facilitator of many new business relationships, helping arrange deals that resulted in mutually beneficial long-term partnerships. My skill starts with a love for talking to people. I talk and listen to SME owners all day long. Invariably they share a problem (usually of the business not relationship kind!) that they say is holding them back. They may need to be connected to a person or business they can form a joint venture or partnership with, they may be looking for specialist advice or someone reliable with a skill or expertise they haven’t been able to find themselves. Usually finding someone isn’t the problem, more often than not they have been inundated with possible suitors and consequently have no idea which way to go. What they really need is help to pick out their perfect match, so they’re able to feel confident they will receive the high level of customer service they expect from their service providers.

Myself and the District32 team like to think of ourselves as the ideal intermediary. Often the perfect person or business springs to mind because we’ve worked with them, referred them, know them as an expert or authority in their field, they’ve been recommended to us or we’ve heard them speak at an event or seminar. Business owners are busy people and if someone can offer them an easy solution, they are most grateful. Before they know it, the referred business owner has jumped to their aid. The two parties have met and decided the synergies are right for a perfect partnership, joint venture or their problem has been met with the ideal solution. The referred business is eager to please as they know we’re bound to keep matching them with other ideal partners in the future. And to District32, well this is what gets us out of bed in the morning. In fact I’m thinking of changing the job title on my business card to ‘Business Match-Maker’. It has a good ring to it I think! So don’t be afraid to put us to the test. If you think there is a business or person out there that could make your business life a little easier, be sure to give me a call. District32 Interviews: Daniel Roberts This month we’d like to introduce you to a key member of the extended District32 team. He is fondly referred to as the ‘Social Media Dude’ by the D32 directors and is the face behind the fabulous graphical content you have been seeing on our social media sites. 1) What is your name and age? My name is Daniel Roberts and I am 19 2) What University do you attend? Curtin University 3) What do you study? I study Internet Communications. It mostly consists of theory, then there is a more practical side which involves using collaborative and analytical tools. Getting on board with D32 has complemented this course nicely. 4) What is your favourite platform and why? It has to be Facebook. It’s the easiest way to connect and spread content, as well as monitor the response. Second is Instagram, in a tie with Twitter. I love how Twitter offers more external functions than Facebook and Instagram. 5) What is your biggest secret to SM success?

7) What platform has attracted the most success for District32? Facebook and Instagram, no argument. There are high volumes of engagement and response on both platforms. 8) What kind of content has the highest engagement rate? Posts about what the company is doing to make a difference. The launch event saw terrific feedback because it was well organised and had a real world impact on SMEs. The real core of the company has to be reflected in social media. Good marketing means social media is never put to waste. 9) What is your favourite software? A tricky one to decide on, but it has to be the Mac exclusive Pixelmator. It’s very affordable, beautifully designed and does a sharp job, even doing some things better than its competitor, Photoshop. It’s also on iPad - the only full-fledged image editing app on the platform.

I think originality in content and message. Something different. I get tired of seeing the same thing reposted after 3 years. Social media doesn’t have to be cheap, rushed content that tries to get bulk likes. It also has to be very engaging to get some discussion going.

10) What is your biggest timesaver?

6) What should be avoided?

District32 Social Media Platforms

Bring unoriginal and not understanding the networking aspect of Social Media. People want news about the business—not cat memes. I think with quality comes interest but first you have to know how to optimise it properly before putting too much effort into the content, the effort is wasted if you don’t know how to get it seen.
