Upper Reach Winery Takes Out People’s Choice Award
Winery owner Laura Pearse took out the SME Spectacular’s People Choice award after attendees voted via the District32 app on their phones.
Laura’s entertaining presentation described the journey she and husband Derek took to transform a vineyard that sold all its grapes as fruit in 1996 to an award winning winery, cellar door, restaurant and spa cottage accommodation.
Upper Reach produces handmade estate grown wines from fruit grown on the Swan Valley vineyard and made in the on-site winery. Management and staff are pas sionate about linking the local community with the winery’s rich heritage.
Upper Reach is going against the trend of mass-produced, corporat ised wine production, where grapes and bottled wines are transported thousands of kilometres. Upper Reach produces handcrafted wine using local staff in their labour intensive methods to sell 90% of production at the cellar door. Local produced food is sold through the winery and restaurant.
Upper Reach provides visitors with the experience of the grape-grow ing and wine making processes entwined with the history of the Swan Valley.
Laura intends to use her business prizes to further systemise the sales process to increase new customer contacts and enhance
existing customer relationships.
The Cellar Club program can now be automated so purchases are linked to customer details and staff time can be freed up by automating as many of the sales and marketing processes as possible.
Thank You
Once again thank you to our generous sponsors Business Station, ECU, Community2Go, Business News, Joondalup Resort, The Factory, Stirling Business Association, Inception Video, Love Letters, City of Wanneroo, City of Joondalup, Phase One Audio and Sondergaard. Thank you to all the businesses who offered their time, expertise or products for the Big Prize or raffle prizes.
Special mention to John Hardy of Peak Consultancy for his hugely generous contribution to
the business renovation prize, a $10,000 business coaching package. Kirstin has already started working with John and has been absolutely thrilled with his advice and support so far. He has been instrumental in helping her develop a strategic implementation plan to ensure she utilises all of the prizes she won in the right order and to her best advantage. We look forward to hearing more about how this amazing journey progresses for Kirstin and the impact it has on her business.
More than $150,000 worth of products and services were given away on the night.

Why Hiring Staff is Like Investing in Property
by david osborneit’s all about return on investment not the time spent in activity
A telemarketer contacted me and asked if I would like some lead generation work. I asked the telemarketer why she had stopped working with her last two clients and the reply was “I have managed to make them so busy that they don’t need to use me any more.” I said “Is it okay if I organise a three way phone call with the last two businesses you worked for and ask them “is it true that ........... has managed to make you so busy that you do not need to use her anymore?” The back tracking that occurred was instantaneous.
Activity without a profitable return is a wasted investment. If you invest in people you need to see a direct profitable impact on your business or why do it.
The end game
One of the key motivators for people to go into business is to create wealth and to have control over the wealth creation process. Business owners are willing to trade their time, knowledge and skills in the open market in the endeavour to obtain a greater return on investment from their assets. The measure of how well they are managing their key assetthemselves - is their net worth.
Wealth is how long you can live off the income generated by your assets.(1)
Hiring staff is like investing in property
When investing in property you need to be clear on what the return on investment will be. Some people invest in properties for positive cash flow and others for capital gain. Positive cash flow property means you earn money, capital gains means the value of the investment goes up.
However the first step is to know what outcome you should obtain from the investment. This is exactly the same when you invest in people, “what outcome can I expect from the hire of this person, and will it be better than just putting my money into property and shares?”
It’s all about the return on investment
Positive cash flow properties are akin to your marketers and sales people, they generate money. Capital gain properties are those employees who increase the value of your business primarily with their knowledge and skills.
Property asset managers are the people who ensure an increased return on investment from all the resources that have been allocated to the property.
A good manager (asset manager) should easily provide you with a 3:1 return on investment.
The money business owners make is often re-invested into assets like property and shares. Sometimes a sole trader wishes to invest in people and to grow their business by leveraging the time and talents of their staff.
If you invest in (employ) anyone you must know how to measure the return on investment. Additionally the talented employees in the market place will know exactly what they can achieve, and because they truly understand the concept of return on investment, their achievements are often achieved in a much faster time than originally budgeted for.
It’s all about the results
Good marketers and sales people should provide you with a 10:1 return when investing in them.
Summary
The end game or key driver for many of our investment decisions is motivated by wealth creation.
If you invest in employees they are just like any other investment, you should know how they will increase your businesses profitability. Don’t hire staff for their activity, hire staff for their ability to achieve tangible results that assist you to create wealth, not just for you, for the employee as well.

the five steps to the ‘good-life’
by wayne cookIs the GOOD-LIFE a myth? Where do find the good-life? Is it down aisle 32 as a red-light special in your local supermarket? Is there a golden checklist that you can tick off and therefore achieve the good-life? The good-life is defined and measured by each of us because we all have different versions of what goes into the making of the good-life.
Now, a lot of people don’t know what they want for tomorrow let alone the future so the ever tempting short-term feel good of television, internet, computer games, Facebook and the like - is all too common. Now let’s be clear, I’m not claiming that these are the pathway to being eternally miserable - no, no, no everything in balance - but it is the over use of these time-filling activities that can get in the way of thinking and doing what it takes to create your version of the good-life.
The 5 guide-posts for YOUR version of the good-life:
1. Let go of other people’s expectations of who you are and
what you do. You have inner genius about who you are -- step closer to being the real-you.
2. Does the time you spend with the five people you spend the most of your time with reflect the real-you? If not, spend more time with people who help you climb the authenticity ladder.
3. When have you felt truly happy or jumping-out-of your-skin alive? If you know it is good for you, good for others and good for your environment -- then design your life to rock out with doing more of that.
4. Take a moment, slow your thoughts ..... down and answer this question.............. If you removed all time, money and reasons as to why you can’t achieve the life of your dreams then what would you do in your uniquely amazing life?
5. Take your answer to question 4 as a starting point to connecting inwards to start living and moving towards your good life. (psst: I’ll let you in on a little secret.... You know the answers to your awesome life -- you just haven’t unveiled it yet.
Connect deep enough with your inner-genius and it will all become clear :) )
Soon, Wayne will be running small group workshops so that you can tap into your inner-genius and start creating your ‘good-life’. It won’t happen overnight but you’ll have amazing insights that will create new actions taking you closer and closer to the ‘good-life’.
District32 Exclusive Providers can enjoy a better ticket price on workshops offered by Wayne Cook.
To find out more about the workshops available in the new year, email or call Wayne Cook today.

The Benefits Of Shopping Local For Food
When we speak about shopping local, one of the major focuses is on the local economy, and that is true when it comes to buying things such as local produce. There are, however, many other benefits to purchasing food from local growers. There are a number of benefits of eating locally produced food.
Local Produce
You really don’t know how long it has been since produce you buy at a grocery store was picked. It could have spent time in a warehouse. It may have been shipped long distances. On the other hand, local produce is fresh. For that reason, it often tastes better and may even be healthier for you, since the vitamins have not had time to deteriorate.
Since you are buying directly from the farmer, the grower has the incentive to provide high quality as opposed to a corporate grower who will never meet the eater face to face. You can also ask what has been done to treat what you are consuming. Thus, you can confirm if
something is truly organic.
Local Honey
Locally grown honey may also have health benefits. Some use local honey as a dietary supplement to fight against seasonal and other environmental allergies. The understanding is that the bees pick up tiny amounts of pollen from many different types of vegetation. Those tiny amounts of potential allergens may serve to “inoculate” the eater against such local allergies. Of course, this theory would only apply to local honey where the bees would come in contact with local allergens. Whether or not the local honey actually helps allergies, it will still be fresh and delicious.
Local Meat
Buying local meat also allows you to get a glimpse into what has been done with the animals that you are about to eat. Knowing that the animals have not been treated with antibiotics is important to many.
Also, local livestock may be grass fed. There are many practices that improve the quality of meat, both for taste and health that may be adopted by a local seller.
Those are just the health benefits. Fewer food miles often translates to cheaper prices at the checkout. A shorter distance between orchard or farm to supermarket also means fruit and vegetables can be picked later allowing it to ripen for longer in the field.
District32 also believes that supporting local farms is a way of investing in the future of our crops, and it promotes genetic diversity rather than the genetically modified food that comes from large growers.
Locally-owned grocers such as Supa Value, Farmer Jack’s as well as the farmers and suburban markets support locally-grown produce.

perth ranks eighth most livable city
Perth has risen from number nine last year to number eight as one of the world’s best places to live in the Global Livability Ranking.
Perth was one of four Australian cities to rank in the top 10 most livable cities in the world with Melbourne taking top position for the fifth consecutive year. Adelaide was tied 5th with Calgary Canada while Sydney ranked 7th. Sydney’s siege in December last year placed Australia on high terror alert and may impact rankings of Australian cities in the future.
Australian and Canadian cities claimed the top eight spots while the worst positions were held by cities in Syria, Bangladesh and PNG.
Around 20% of cities surveyed experienced declines in livability outcomes in the last 12 months. Perth scores well in the categories of education, health care, infrastructure as well as the economy. The biggest factor to hurt Perth’s chances of moving up the ranking is the climate. Its hot summer puts off a few people from calling Perth home.
The warm weather certainly hasn’t put everyone off. Plenty of immigrants have braved the sun and set up home in Perth. More than one third of Perth’s population was born overseas while the national average is 25%.
Perth may well have shrugged off its ‘Dullesville’ tag from a decade ago.

Give your business image a facelift
Most businesses require some element of design over a period of time. The majority of this is required when a business is starting out, but further refinements are required throughout the life of that business in one form or another.
This can range from rolling out a brand, to catalogues promoting products, or campaigns and advertising.
To ensure brand consistency, all design work for businesses should ideally be created by the same designer. A business deserves quality design and value for money and that’s where Pink Piranha comes into the equation.
