Addressing Burnout Head-on

Repeated exposure to certain situations can lead to desensitisation; what once shocked us can become commonplace, and what used to cause alarm can fade into indifference. With the pressures of the modern workplace, we can become numb to the severity of workplace burnout. The prevalence of burnout is rising, particularly among younger workers, and its impact is increasingly severe. Recent surveys indicate that 67% of adults aged 18 to 34 find stress hampers their focus, 58% describe their stress as overwhelming, and nearly half say they often feel unable to function due to stress.

Burnout, characterised by exhaustion, negativity towards work and diminished performance, poses significant health risks, including sleep issues, cardiovascular disease, gastrointestinal problems, depression, absenteeism and job dissatisfaction. Burned-out employees are prone to mistakes and less likely to be innovative. Some estimates suggest low employee engagement— a key sign of burnout — costs the global economy around $8.8 trillion; equivalent to 9% of the world’s GDP.

Many Gen Z workers view burnout as an unavoidable part of success, while some executives believe high-pressure assignments are essential experiences. Toxic hustle culture often glorifies busyness, leading us to accept overwhelming stress as a standard part of work life.

“What happened to holistic wellbeing and a focus on mental health in the Australian office?”

7. Seek Professional Help: If burnout has become your norm, consider consulting a therapist or coach for guidance. Professional support can enhance your resilience and emotional intelligence, helping you navigate stress.

While addressing systemic issues related to burnout requires collective effort, individuals can implement strategies to prevent stress from escalating and foster healthier workplaces where burnout is less prevalent.

Understanding and Addressing Burnout

Heavy workloads and tight deadlines are common challenges in management, leaving many feeling overwhelmed. However, when chronic work stress leads to burnout, it becomes a serious issue that affects not only individual wellbeing and job performance, but also impacts teams and business as a whole.

The true extent of burnout is hard to quantify since it is not classified as a standalone clinical condition. Some researchers suggest that only 7% of professionals are significantly affected, while others report rates as high as 50% among medical professionals and 85% among finance professionals. A study of 5,400 UK workers found that 64% experienced high stress levels, loss of control and extreme fatigue. It’s not too much of a stretch to assume similar statistics could apply to the Australian workplace.

Burnout is linked to various negative health outcomes, including heart disease, hypertension, sleep disorders, depression, anxiety and increased substance use. It can also lead to feelings of futility, harm relationships and reduce long-term career prospects.

I’ve faced burnout myself, and I've worked with many clients facing similar challenges in managing work-related stress and achieving sustainable success. BUT to prevent burnout, we must recognise symptoms and their root causes, while developing strategies.

Three Components of Burnout

The body of research indicates burnout consists of three main components: exhaustion, cynicism and inefficacy.

1. Exhaustion is the primary symptom of burnout, manifesting as deep physical, cognitive, and emotional fatigue. This state can arise from an alwayson work culture, intense deadlines or overwhelming tasks, especially when individuals lack control, dislike their work or feel unskilled. Exhaustion leads to difficulty concentrating, loss of enjoyment in tasks, and challenges in maintaining work-life boundaries.

2. Cynicism involves a disconnection from one's work. Instead of feeling engaged, individuals may develop a negative, detached attitude towards colleagues and tasks. This detachment often stems from overload, conflicts or feelings of being excluded from decision-making

Learnings From the Journey of 3 to 100

In 2016, from my living room, we started building this business; at that time the livelihoods of three people were dependent upon it. Now the livelihoods of 100 + people are in our hands. This is a trust and responsibility we take very seriously.

At each stage of this incredible journey, we have had some great lessons and learnt more about ourselves than we initially imagined. For my part, I am a very different person today to the one who began this business. If I didn't grow on this journey, I don't believe I would have been able to manage where we are today or have the confidence to continue to push towards where we are going.

My hope is that you can take the following lessons and implement them into your business.

Lesson 1. Sacrifice.

When I speak of sacrifice, I do not mean in hard work or long hours, even though they both are required.

If I wanted the business to be different to what I had previously built, I needed to approach it differently. This involved me stepping away from income producing and as a result accepting the resultant sacrifice in personal income to develop a team of people to replace me. Today, the revenue isn't the result of any personal exertion and is significantly greater than I could ever raise with my own efforts, and as such, this allows me to leverage our cashflow for sustainable and scalable growth.

Lesson 2. Trust.

I remember reading a quote I believe was attributed to Winston Churchill, which, as I recall, was something like, Find a good person to do the job and don't meddle with them whilst they are doing it. For me it was tough to let go of things, like my clients or workflows, and trust others to get it done, for fear of things going wrong.

September 2024: A Month of Adventure and Recognition

September 2024 was a whirlwind of excitement and achievement for me, starting with an unforgettable twoweek holiday in my favourite place— Kruger Park. The warm weather, breathtaking landscapes and magnificent wildlife made for an ideal getaway. Armed with my camera, I had the chance to film majestic lions, elusive leopards, and graceful giraffes. To quote Dorothy and her gang…”Oh my.”

Back in Perth after my trip, I headed to the Pro Photography WA Orloff Awards on September 19th. I'd submitted two safari photos, curious to see how they'd fare among Perth's photography talent. To my surprise, they won a silver and a silver plus (scoring 7 and 8 out of 10). I also submitted two videos that I hoped would resonate with the judges.

Though I initially thought I hadn't made the cut, I attended to be inspired by the other finalists, and the event didn't disappoint. The impressive entries, covering everything from corporate to nature, filled two floors of the State Library

Finally, the Video award was announced, and I was stunned to hear my name—WA Videographer of the Year!

An excerpt from one of my wedding films was played, and the audience's audible groan when it was cut short felt like the highest compliment. September was unforgettable, filled with recognition and a renewed pride in storytelling through video.

7 Strategies For Adapting To Change And Uncertainty In Business

Of all the uncertainties we face in business, change is not one of them! Change is inevitable, and is indeed, some would say, essential for survival. Market conditions shift, technology evolves, consumer expectations and needs change, and global events can reshape entire industries overnight. Understanding and adapting to these changes is an invaluable skill, even a requirement, for emerging leaders today. Navigating uncertainty requires flexibility and a proactive approach to both planning and execution.

As John F. Kennedy once said, “Change is the law of life and those who look only to the past or present are certain to miss the future.”

So, let's explore some strategies for successfully leading you through inevitable changes in business, focusing on becoming more adaptable and embracing uncertainty as a way to continuously learn and grow.

1. Embrace change and develop a Growth Mindset

Developing a ‘growth mindset' has become a common theme for business leaders across the world. Having a growth mindset means you view challenges as opportunities rather than threats. Your look for ways to continue to learn and develop through adversity. This perspective is essential when dealing with uncertainty because it allows you to embrace and approach change with curiosity and creativity, rather than fear and resistance. Resistance often stems from fear of the unknown, but with a growth mindset, you can develop a resilient culture within your business that can respond swiftly to new opportunities. Embracing change, rather than resisting it, is crucial for longterm success.

This positive outlook can give you a competitive edge. Understanding that change is a natural progression will ensure your company keeps moving forward and looking to the future.

Encourage your team to experiment, learn from failures, and innovate. Create a space where trying new things is rewarded, even if they don't always succeed.

Applying emotional intelligence and focus on your people, will enhance teamwork and build stronger relationships, which will often lead to higher productivity. It can support higher employee retention, lessening stress and burnout among staff, and help to improve conflict resolutions.

Practice active listening and be mindful of your team's emotional responses. Offer support where needed and encourage self-care practices. Regular checkins, whether through one-on-one meetings or team discussions, allow employees to voice concerns, share ideas, and seek guidance. A team that feels valued and supported is more likely to remain engaged and productive.

5. Invest in Continuous Learning and Development

With change being inevitable, we must ensure teams are equipped with the skills to thrive. A workforce that embraces lifelong learning will be better positioned to adapt to new technologies and market demands.

With a culture of continuous learning, employees feel supported and know they have the resources and tools they need. With training opportunities, clear job expectations and mentorship programs, teams feel valued, encouraging teamwork and collaboration, which can increase resilience when facing challenges.

Offer regular training sessions, workshops or access to online learning platforms. Encourage employees to expand their skills, not only in their current role but also in areas that could be valuable in the future. When people feel empowered to grow, they become more resilient when adapting to change.

6. Empower Decision-Making at All Levels

One, or a few, managers calling all the shots can lead to bottlenecks during times of change and add to employee anxiety. By keeping employees informed and empowering them to make decisions, within their area of expertise, you speed up processes and enhance responsiveness. Leaders who delegate effectively build a more resilient and adaptable organisation.

It's important to clearly define decision-making authority, while still allowing all employees to have an input in the process. Provide your team with the tools and information they need to make informed choices. Trust in their ability to make decisions, especially in areas where they are knowledgeable, while also being available to provide guidance when necessary.

A Holistic Approach to Living Life on Your Terms WEALTH CREATION:

Case Study: Mark's Journey to Financial Independence

Mark*, a 45-year-old, high-income-earning professional, found himself at a pivotal moment in life. With a young family to support, and a newly launched business, he was juggling multiple responsibilities. Despite his substantial income, Mark felt the pressure of financial instability and the demands of his growing business. Determined to create a secure and fulfilling future, Mark began a journey with the team at Think Capital, to build true wealth through a holistic, values-based approach.

Setting Clear Goals

Mark's first step was to define what wealth meant to him. For Mark, wealth meant financial security for his family, the freedom to grow his business, and the ability to enjoy life's experiences. By setting clear, specific goals, Mark created a roadmap to guide his financial decisions. He aimed to build a robust contingency fund, save for his children's education, and invest in his business' growth.

Aligning with Values

Mark's core values included family, integrity and personal growth. He wanted his financial strategies to reflect these values. Mark prioritised saving for his children's future and ensuring his family's financial security. This alignment with his values gave Mark a sense of purpose and fulfillment, motivating him to stay committed to his financial plan.

Holistic Approach

Understanding that true wealth means more than just financial assets, Mark adopted a holistic approach to wealth creation. He focused on improving his physical health, mental well-being and spiritual fulfillment. Mark began a regular exercise routine, practiced mindfulness and made time for activities that brought him joy and relaxation, such as spending quality time with his family.

SURVIVING AND THRIVING THROUGH CRISIS:

A Journey of Leadership, Resilience and Mental Wellness

Leadership isn't just about making decisions, it's about embracing challenges head-on, navigating change with resilience and fostering an environment where people can thrive. Over the last 21 years, I've had the privilege of leading in the club industry, and since 2017, I've been the General Manager of the Coolangatta Surf Club. I've seen my fair share of highs and lows -from the near-financial collapse during the 2018 Commonwealth Games to leading the club through the COVID-19 pandemic. But it was during the pandemic that I truly discovered the power of vulnerability, resilience and mental wellness in leadership.

Adapting to Unforeseen Challenges

In leadership, you're not just reacting to the present - you're shaping the future. But when the pandemic hit, Coolangatta found itself at a standstill, cut off by hard border closures and facing unprecedented challenges. Our community, reliant on tourism, was devastated. Businesses shuttered, livelihoods were at stake, and our club, too, was on the brink of collapse.

However, in times of crisis, leaders have a choice; retreat into survival mode or rise to the occasion. For me, survival wasn't enough - I wanted our club to thrive. We launched the Essentially Cooly campaign; a bold initiative that brought media attention to our plight and forced the state government to sit up and take notice. The campaign helped secure a $14 million rescue package for Coolangatta businesses. It wasn't just about financial survival - it was about restoring hope and resilience in our community.

Through it all, I was navigating my own personal battle with mental health. The pressure to keep the club afloat, while supporting my family and my team, became overwhelming. It was during this time that I penned a LinkedIn post titled Pandemic Fatigue, where I opened up about my struggles. To my surprise, the post resonated widely, garnering media attention and sparking meaningful conversations about mental health, both within the industry and beyond.

The Power of Unlocking Your Talents

Identifying and aligning with these strengths allows you to focus on activities that feel effortless and meaningful, creating a sense of enjoyment and purpose. When you're working in alignment with your talents, decision-making becomes clearer, and your actions yield better results. You naturally engage in activities that inspire you, which creates more capacity to thrive. Flow in work and life isn't just about doing more—it's about doing the right things that make you feel empowered.

Harnessing Social Media to Drive Connection and Change NAVIGATING THE DIGITAL OCEAN BY

Social media has evolved into a powerful tool for connecting and communicating with people across the globe. Social media is vast and filled with endless possibilities for exploration and discovery, offering countless opportunities to stay informed, connect with loved ones and promote businesses. But just like navigating the ocean, using social media requires intention and responsibility to avoid the whirlpool of negativity and misinformation. When harnessed thoughtfully, it becomes a tool for building relationships, amplifying voices and driving positive change.

Choosing the Right Platforms:

Rather than trying to be everywhere, focusing on 2 or 3 platforms that align with your goals and that you can sustain with meaningful engagement, is more effective. Here's a breakdown of key platforms and how each serves different purposes:

1. Instagram: Visual Storytelling and Brand Aesthetics

Purpose - Instagram is highly visual and ideal for sharing compelling images, short videos (Reels), and Stories that convey your brand's aesthetics, lifestyle and products.

Best for - Creative industries, lifestyle brands, personal branding, or anyone looking to showcase visual content like photos, artwork or behindthe-scenes moments.

Engagement - Instagram thrives on eye-catching visuals and curated feeds. Story features also allow for quick, personal connections and direct interaction with followers.

2. Facebook: Community Engagement and Personal Connections

Purpose - Facebook is great for creating community, fostering conversations and sharing a mix of content from blog posts to events, videos and updates. It works for both personal and business interactions.

LinkedIn allows you to position yourself as a leader in your field, whether you're looking to build your career, share business insights or connect with industry peers.

LinkedIn is the platform where your knowledge and professionalism can shine through, offering opportunities to collaborate, exchange ideas and open doors to new professional relationships. Being active on LinkedIn is no longer optional, it's a must for anyone seeking to elevate their professional presence and make meaningful business connections.

Social media also plays a crucial role in complementing your social footprint. If you're actively investing in networking and building relationships, it's essential to remind people that you exist and stay top of mind. Social media enables just that by creating a consistent digital presence. In today's fast-paced world, people get busy and it's easy to be forgotten. Regularly showing up in their feeds strengthens your online credibility, reminding your connections of your expertise, services or products. This consistent presence allows people to become more familiar with your brand, making them more likely to engage with you when they need what you offer. Social media becomes an extension of your personal and professional efforts, allowing your networking activities to flourish in the digital space.

Social media holds the power to connect people and drive impactful change. By selecting the platforms that align with your goals, whether building communities on Facebook, showcasing your visual brand on Instagram, or establishing thought leadership on LinkedIn, you can navigate the digital landscape with purpose. Focusing on the right channels ensures your voice is heard, fostering meaningful connections and driving success. If you're ready to anchor your brand and show up consistently, contact Social Tides, where we help you sail ahead of the competition with strategic and consistent brand awareness.

WHAT PEOPLE SEE

WHAT REALLY HAPPENS

Why? Because we are not like everyone else. We are resilient, dreamers and believers in our abilities. We work hard, think smart and have a drive that pushes us to seek more than just a pay slip. We want to do business our way; to innovate and to lead.

We thrive on controlling our own destiny. We take pride in being leaders of people and creating something that's our own. It's no secret that business can be tough. Some days you'll ask yourself, “Why am I doing this?” But those days are balanced by the ones where everything goes right, the years profitability is higher than ever, and you are reminded why you started in the first place.

The truth is - the highs outweigh the lows. We take responsibility for our performance, learn from our mistakes and continue to build a business we can be proud of. Yes, business can be tough, but we love the challenge.

That is why we're in it. It's that passion for overcoming the hurdles that keeps us going, no matter how hard it gets. After all, if it were easy, it wouldn't be nearly as rewarding.

You are, we are, entrepreneurs. And loving it!

Understand Human Behaviour, Influence Decisions and Master the Art of Selling .... Anything!

In today's fast-paced business landscape, success isn't just about having a great product or service, it's about understanding people; how they think, communicate and make decisions. This is particularly important in small businesses, where the dynamic between team members and customers can make or break growth. MAC TEAM Consulting specialises in helping companies bridge this gap, using tools like DiSC assessment to understand and influence human behaviour.

The Power of DiSC in Small Businesses

The DiSC assessment is a behavioural tool that helps individuals and teams identify their dominant personality traits in four categories: Dominance, Influence, Steadiness, and Conscientiousness. By understanding these traits, businesses can better manage team dynamics, improve communication and create a culture that fosters collaboration and productivity.

In small businesses, where teams are more intimate and often wear multiple hats, understanding each employee's behavioural style is vital for ensuring the right fit in roles, improving morale and increasing overall productivity. A study by Gallup reveals that highly engaged teams show a 21% increase in profitability. DiSC helps create this engagement by aligning individual strengths with organisational goals.

Building a Positive Culture Through Understanding

Culture is the cornerstone of any successful business, but creating a culture where employees feel motivated and valued can be challenging. Using DiSC, MAC TEAM Consulting helps companies to foster a positive and inclusive culture by teaching leaders and employees how to communicate effectively with one another. Employees who feel understood and appreciated for their unique behavioural styles are likelier to engage fully and contribute to a thriving team environment.

CUSTOMER

SERVICE:

The Silent Engine Driving Success for Small & Medium Businesses

In today's hyper-competitive market, where small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) strive to carve out their niche, one element often overlooked, is customer service.

While many SMEs focus on product development, marketing and pricing, they frequently underestimate the profound impact that excellent customer service has on business growth.

For businesses of any size, particularly those with limited resources, customer service is not just a department - it's the backbone that supports long-term success.

Customer Service as a Differentiator

Want to know how your business can stand out among all those other businesses with similar products and services?

The answer is customer service.

Price and product are no longer the only factors customers consider.

Customers see experience as crucial in their purchasing decisions, and most are willing to pay more for a friendly, welcoming experience.

For those businesses who lack large marketing budgets, customer service can be a key differentiator, turning a small business into a trusted brand.

Now, if your local café remembers their customers names and orders, they will be fostering loyalty and encouraging repeat visits – not through discounts, but by making customers feel appreciated.

Investing in Training and Empowerment

Customer service success depends on employees.

Frontline staff, whether answering phones, working in retail or whatever else they do, are the face of the business. To deliver great service, they need proper training and decision-making authority.

Businesses may assume fewer employees means no need for formal training, but even a small investment pays off. Well-trained employees who understand company values and handle enquiries effectively, create better customer experiences.

Empower them to resolve issues without constant approval and this leads to faster, more satisfying resolutions.

Conclusion - Customer Service as a Strategic Asset

For every business, customer service is a strategic asset that drives loyalty and retention, turning failures into growth opportunities.

Investing in exceptional service helps differentiate in competitive markets, building emotional connections and boosting the bottom line. The real question is - can you afford not to invest in it?

Knowing This Number Will Transform Your Business Growth

As a business owner, it's easy to get bogged down in the day-to-day - handling everything yourself to save costs. But this mindset can limit your business growth. Wealthy people spend money to save time, while others spend time to save money.

A key to breaking this cycle is understanding the value of your timeyour hourly rate:

Hourly Rate = Financial Return ($) ÷ Hours Worked

For example, if you earn $100,000 annually (from salary and profits) and work 50 hours per week for 50 weeks, your hourly rate is $40. Your goal is to increase this number.

You've probably heard about how agile can make your business faster and more adaptable. It's often seen as the secret weapon for tech companies, but if you're not using agile the right way, you'll feel like you're spinning your wheels without seeing any results.

If you're struggling to make agile work for your business, you might be falling into some common traps. Let's explore the misconceptions about agile that many leaders and business owners encounter - and how you can get back on track.

1. We're Agile because we have weekly meetings

Just because your team is having regular standup meetings or sprint planning sessions doesn't mean you're agile. Agile is a mindset, not just a set of meetings. If your meetings feel like routine checkboxes instead of useful conversations about your goals and priorities, you're missing the point.

Revamping Lead Generation: Are Lead Magnets Still Effective in 2024?

Back in 2007, when I started in online marketing, lead magnets - those free reports that provide valuable insights - were just beginning to gain traction. In the corporate world, they were known as white papers, often used as capability statements.

Back then, I introduced the concept of an 'online brochure' style website compared to a 'high performing' website. I could show you a vintage video from those days, but let's be honest, no one wants to share old, cringeworthy clips - even if I was a bit slimmer!

More about the difference between the two website styles; let's focus on why you're here - Are lead magnets still effective today?

I understand that selling a home is a significant decision, and I'm here to make that journey as smooth as possible. For me, it's about more than just getting a property sold—it's about providing the guidance, support, and expertise that help my clients achieve the best results.

I build relationships based on trust, respect, and integrity, ensuring that every step of the process is clear and stress-free. The highest compliment is when clients recommend my service or return for their next property venture. If you're thinking of selling or need advice, I'm here to help.
