Reclaiming King’s legacy of economic justice, empowerment
Martin Luther King Jr. emphasized economic justice as a civil rights issue.
By Benjamin F. Chavis, Jr. NNPA Columnist
T
he 2015 Martin Luther King, Jr. National Holiday should have a definite impact on the collective consciousness of Black America. Why? Because once again there are millions of Black Americans who are more determined than ever to achieve full freedom, justice, equality and empowerment. The historic methodology, style and substance of Rev. King’s leadership needs to be reclaimed by those with the heavy responsibility to lead. By re-embracing Rev. King’s prophetic activism and mobilization genius, I believe Black American leaders of national organizations will be effective in countering the backward drift of voter suppression, racism, violence and hopelessness. The tone set in the King Holiday ceremonies this year should focus on achieving equality and economic empowerment for all. Martin Luther King, Jr. was a strong visionary and mesmerizing leader. He used non-violent civil disobedience as an effective strategy. He challenged injustice everywhere while generating enough political capital that led to the enactment of the 1964 Civil Rights Act and the 1965 Voting Rights Act. Shortly before King’s assassination in April 1968, he was clear about the need to secure economic justice en route to becoming what he called the “Beloved Community.”
Over the past year, there have been numerous demonstrations across the nation demanding racial justice in the wake of the police killings of Michael Brown, Eric Garner, Tamir Rice, and Rumain Brisbon. It was a positive sign of progress to witness street protests that, in the spirit of Rev. King, transcended race and class. It was Rev. King who reminded us that “an injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.” As was the case in the past, young people today are only less prejudiced than their parents and preceding generations. Even so, emerging young leaders are unrelenting – they are pushing forward with renewed energy, conviction and vigor. In fact, we should not forget that Martin Luther King was only 26 years old in 1955 when he became the primary spokesman for the nascent Montgomery bus boycott movement. Many campaigning for public office are looking beyond MLK Day to the 2016 U.S. presidential race. Our challenge is to make sure the quest for equality and justice does not get placated by the politics of expediency. In other words, the momentum in 2014 to transform America should not be allowed to dissipate over the next year. Now that the U.S. economy continues to rebound, efforts to end poverty in our communities should be significantly increased. Interestingly, those who opposed President Barack Obama blamed him for things that were already
bad when he assumed office. And now that the economy has improved, they refuse to give him credit for the recovery. As we prepare to celebrate the birthday of the Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr., we should remember that he concluded that economic justice was also a key civil rights issue. Two weeks before Rev. King was murdered, he addressed a rally in Memphis of American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME). King stated, “Now our struggle is for genuine equality, which means economic equality … For we know now that it isn’t enough to integrate lunch counters. What does it profit a man to be able to eat at an integrated lunch counter if he doesn’t have enough money to buy a hamburger?” Rev. King was on point. Today, the struggle is not just about having more money to buy something. It is about knowing how to more effectively invest and spend the $1.1 trillion that Black Americans are expected to spend annually by 2015. It is about owning more businesses in our communities. In the tradition of Rev. King, we have to wisely leverage our huge consumer power. We are grateful that the legacy of Rev. King’s leadership continues to be vibrant and relevant to the advancement of the cause of freedom and justice. We, therefore, face the future with a stronger confidence that we still shall overcome, largely by reclaiming Rev. King’s legacy.

Closing the wealth gap starts with personal goals (TriceEdneyWire.com) – Sakina Spruell Cole should have an “S” on her chest with a cape to match. Cole is a financial journalist, web series host, entrepreneur, mother and wife. After two decades of promoting financial literacy and economic empowerment, she is not tired yet. This Rutgers University alumna is armed with a purpose. “I want to help close the wealth gap between people of color and mainstream communities,” said Cole, the CEO of Cole Media, Inc., a full-service communications company based in Newark, New Jersey. Not one to merely talk about it, Cole acquired Minuteman Press of Flemington and created the Keeping It Rich brand of products to increase financial literacy within the general market. Those products include a blog, seminars, financial booklets and a web show that airs on BET.com. “These financial products deliver much needed personal finance information to an audience
in a lively, upbeat format so everyone can relate to it,” said Cole. “I try to share every bit of my own life when it concerns finances because people feel so uncomfortable talking about their own financial situation.” Cole’s five keys to Keeping It Rich include defining your good life, investing in your financial goals, building your credit, owning something and hiring your staff. Define People really need to define what the rich life is for themselves. For some people, the rich life is having $1.7 million. For others, it may be having a four-bedroom house with a white picket fence and enough grass for the dog to run around. (NNPA) – Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed fired highly-decorated and respected Fire Chief Kelvin Cochran for writing, publishing and distributing a book condemning homosexuality. Cochran had published the book, “Who Told You That You Were Naked,” and spoke about it in the church where he serves as the deacon and Sunday school teacher. “I want to make my position and the city of Atlanta’s position crystal clear,” said Reed strongly and resolutely in a press conference at Atlanta City Hall. “The city’s nondiscrimination policy … really unequivocally states that we will not discriminate.” Any individual who violates that policy or “creates an environment where that is a concern” will not continue his or her employment with the city government. Conservatives have flocked to Cochran’s defense, saying he has been subjected to unjust ridicule and persecution for espousing his religious beliefs. J. Edgar White, executive director of the Georgia Baptist Convention, accused the mayor of subjecting Cochran as part of those “who are punished or marginalized for their faith.” White is imploring Christians to purchase Cochran’s book and support him. Reed vehemently and repeatedly denied Cochran was terminated for his religious beliefs, instead saying the book, “Who Told You That You Were Naked?” was published in violation of Atlanta’s Standards of Conduct, which requires approval from the Ethics Officer and the Board of Ethics. According to Reed, Cochran’s “actions and decision-making undermine his ability to manage our fire department” because people under Cochran’s charge need to feel that they are “a valued member of the team and that fairness

and respect guide employment decisions.” “Let’s stop trying to make this about religious freedom when it’s about making sure we have an environment in government where everyone, no matter who they love … can do their job and go home
insisting that Cochran’s book is “clearly inflammatory.” The mayor also has his supporters in firing Cochran. An Atlanta columnist, Jay Bookman, blasted the ex-fire chief for his judgment. “When you have been suspended without pay from your job, as Cochran was,” penned Bookman, “you can’t make it clear during the susthat Atlanta, Georgia pension you intend to continue such statements, and then expect that you’ll be reinstated.” Cochran’s book includes very strong language about multiple acts of sexual impropriety and iniquity: “uncleanness – whatever is opposite of purity; including sodomy, homosexuality, lesbianism, pederasty, bestiality, all other forms of sexual perversion.” Cochran included homosexuality among behaviors that are “vile, vulgar, and inappropriate” and “defile [the] body-temple and dishonor God.”

without fear of being discriminated against. That’s what this is about,” said Reed. “To those folks who were calling me and telling me that I should retain him, I just want you to know one thing … his religious decisions are not the basis of the problem; his judgment is the basis of the problem.” The mayor was referring to the inflammatory and defamatory emails he received over the holidays calling him the “anti-Christ,”

Police chief: We can’t do this without churches By Adelle M. Banks Religion News Service
B
ishop Talbert W. Swan II has worked with police departments in western Massachusetts for two decades, speaking to new cadets and riding in patrol cars with officers as their chaplain. Sometimes he coordinates meetings at his church with witnesses to crimes who didn’t want to visit a police station, but says only “pockets of the religious community” have fostered that kind of regular communication with law enforcement. “The unfortunate reality is that many predominantly Black churches have thrown up their hands and decided that the police departments just are not willing to respect communities of color and so they’ve given up,” said Swan, pastor of Spring of Hope Church of God in Christ in Springfield and an adviser for social justice policy in the predominantly Black denomination. As racial tensions continue to simmer in the wake of the deaths of unarmed Black men at the hands of White officers, churches have
offered themselves up as trusted go-betweens for the police and angry residents, particularly in Black communities. Yet as the new movie “Selma” focuses on the harsh treatment that police meted out on civil rights activists 50 years ago, clergy and police say there is still much work to be done. “There’s tremendous similarity between what was happening in Selma and what’s happening in Ferguson,” said the Rev. Traci Blackmon, pastor of Christ the King United Church of Christ in nearby Florissant, Missouri, who joined protests against police brutality in the wake of a grand jury decision not to charge former police officer Darren Wilson who was not indicted for murdering Michael Brown. Blackmon has seen both sides of the church-cop relationship in suburban St. Louis. Two years ago, a police officer friend helped her track down a missing 14 year old when others told her there was nothing they could do. In December, her church joined two other predominantly Black congregations to distribute toys to poor children alongside police officers and

members of the St. Louis Cardinals baseball team. From coast to coast, clergy and cops say personal relationships are the key to improving police-community interactions. As the Ferguson protests rippled across the country last fall, the Rev. Tony Lee gathered police officers and former inmates at his Community of Hope AME Church in Hillcrest Heights, Maryland, just outside Washington. “They literally have sat down with young brothers and sisters who have records or who have had major issues with the department,” said Lee. In nearby Baltimore, the Rev. Jamal-Harrison Bryant gathered hundreds of youth and police at a town hall meeting about what to do during a police stop. “I had lawyers, public defenders, parents to try to bridge that gap of communication,” said Bryant, pastor of Baltimore’s Empowerment Temple, who was recently appointed to a city task force to consider use of body cameras by police officers. On the Sunday before the upcoming Martin Luther King Day

holiday, some Black churches are calling for a “walk out” to make their presence visible in local communities. The Rev. David Isom of Fairfield, California, has decided to take a different approach. His St. Stephen Christian Methodist Episcopal Church will delay its morning service to meet members of a mostly White church in a unity walk that will end at the local Police Activities League center. Isom, joining with other ministers and the former police chief, cofounded the group Faith Partners Against Crime that mentors local youth and gives them PAL scholarships.
“I am concerned about what has happened to African-American lives – period,” said Isom. “But I don’t think that all police are bad, and I don’t think that all kids are angels.” Kenton Rainey, the police chief of the Bay Area Rapid Transit system, who helped found the Faith PAC in Fairfield, said Black ministers were among the first groups he approached when he started his new job in 2010. He said it was important to gain their trust before a crisis. His message to them was simple: “We can’t do this without you guys.”

New CBC Chair: Black America is in a state of emergency
Rep. Butterfield takes CBC helm, vowing continued fight against police abuses and for criminal justice reforms.
By Joyce Jones (TriceEdneyWire.com) – U. S. Rep. G.K. Butterfield (D-N.C.), the 24th chairman of the Congressional Black Caucus, is taking the reins of the CBC at a pivotal moment in Black history. Despite all of the progress that African Americans have made since the group was founded in 1971, arguably the most significant of which has been the election of the nation’s first Black president. But Butterfield says there is still far to go. “Black America is in a state of emergency today as it was at the turn of the century,” Butterfield declared in remarks delivered at the CBC’s Jan. 9, ceremonial swearing in, where the theme was “Learn from our past, but boldly confront an uncertain future.” As the North Carolina Democrat noted, 25 percent of Black households today live below the poverty line and one in three Black children are living in poverty. The AfricanAmerican unemployment rate has for a half century been twice as high as White unemployment, which only exacerbates persistent income and wealth gaps. “America is not working for many African Americans and the Congressional Black Caucus has an obligation to fight harder and smarter in the next Congress to help repair the damage,” said Butterfield. With both chambers now entirely controlled by a Republican Party that has repeatedly turned a cold shoulder on increasing minimum wage, extending long-term unem-
ployment insurance and other proposals to keep the social safety net intact, it won’t be easy. In addition, said Assistant Democratic Leader James Clyburn, who also spoke at the event, African-Americans must deal with the repercussions of the U.S. Supreme Court decision that overturned a key section of the Voting Rights Act and state and local governments around the country that are “stacking and bleaching legislative and congressional districts, diluting the effectiveness of Black representation and participation.” But Butterfield, who has a storied civil rights past, is no stranger to such challenges. “He has lived much of America’s history,” Clyburn said, and “has learned its lessons.” The new chairman says his leadership of the caucus will be influenced by his experiences growing up in the segregated South of Wilson, N.C., where “colored people” as Blacks were called back then, were treated like second-class citizens. When Butterfield, was a boy, his parents, a teacher and a dentist, were considered middle class. But truth be told, they were just two weeks away from poverty instead of one day like others, and if either parent were to become seriously ill, their family of three would have been financially devastated just like everyone else’s. His father, an avid voting rights activist and founder of the local NAACP chapter, also served for a time on the city council – until efforts to disenfranchise Black voters
made it impossible for Blacks to be elected. As a teenager, Butterfield founded a junior NAACP chapter and helped lead hundreds of other youths in weekly demonstrations to protest segregated public facilities. During his freshman year of college, he took on voting rights, an issue he continues to fight for today. “Those experiences have helped mold my perspective and make me determined to fight every day to expose and defeat racism and discrimination wherever it may exist,” Butterfield said. “So if anyone has doubts that this chairman and this Congressional Black Caucus will have any reluctance to fight for our communities – you are mistaken.” Butterfield hopes that poverty is an issue on which Democrats and Republicans can find common ground because GOP lawmakers represent the majority of constituents who’ve lived below the poverty line for the past 30 years. The centerpiece of the group’s agenda, however, will be criminal justice reform and reversing a “terrible trend” that has resulted in unarmed Black men dying at the hand of law enforcement, Butterfield said. “We are ready for these fights. The fight for the future is not a Black fight, a Democratic or Republican fight; it is a fight that all fair-minded Americans should promote,” the CBC chairman said. “We need to use political means, policy and legal means to reduce racial disparities and move closer to the day when all African Americans will benefit from fairness and justice and realize the American dream.”

The Zhi-Xing China – Perfect World U.S.-China Young Leaders Fellowship program will offer students and mid-career professionals the opportunity to travel across China, strengthening business and personal networks, and sharing inspirational cross-cultural experiences with their Chinese peers. Perfect World, an online gaming company, will assist in funding the fellowship initiative, which is open to all educational disciplines and industries, through 2025. Johnny Taylor, president and CEO of the Thurgood Marshall College Fund, a group that advocates for nearly 300,000 students through a network that includes publicly-supported Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), said that after meeting with world leaders in the public and private sector, he found Perfect World to be the perfect partner, because not only were they interested in entry-level opportunities for HBCU students, but they were also looking for mid-tier professionals, as well. Taylor said that the exchange isn’t just about number-crunchers and programmers, but it also about graphic designers and artists. Taylor noted that people limit science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) professions very much, but in reality everyone interacts with STEM every day. “Everything that we do is about STEM,” said Taylor. Robert Xiao, the CEO of Perfect World, said through conversations with Taylor, he discovered that they shared a similar vision and a grand goal of changing people in the United States and in China. “We know a lot of young pro-

fessionals need to not only grasp the technology part and the art part, but also the culture part,” said Xiao. “You gotta go abroad, you gotta be able talk to different people, you have to understand other nations and other cultures deeper.” Xiao added that not only will Perfect World benefit from these types of exchanges, but the industry will benefit as well. The Perfect World CEO said that he wants to expose Black college students to the “the beautiful business from China” while giving Chinese students a modern piece of America and a deeper understanding of the community. Xiao continued: “That’s what we call an “’exchange.’” According to the International Monetary Fund, China recently surpassed the United States as the world’s largest economy. Taylor said that it would be senseless not to have relationships with the Chinese, especially with what he called a ‘Chinese American company.’ Perfect World is publicly traded on the NASDAQ stock exchange. During a ceremony on Capitol Hill to announce the fellowship program, Hao Ping, the vice minister of education in the Ministry of Education in China, noted that Chinese President Xi Jinping explained that in 1978, during early student exchange efforts, 52 Chinese students were sent to study in the U.S. and eight American students traveled to China. Hao called the exchange “a landmark event in the establishment of China-U.S. diplomatic relations.” By 2013, more than 400,000 Chinese students were studying in the U.S. and thanks to the 100,000 Strong Initiative, a group that pro-
motes Mandarin language learning and study abroad, Hao said that more that 100,000 American students have the chance to study in China. The announcement about the Zhi-Xing China – Perfect World U.S.-China Young Leaders Fellowship program follows the launch of a collaboration between HBCUs and the CEAIE, that will provide 1,000 scholarship awards to HBCU students. David Wilson, the president of Morgan State University in Baltimore, led a delegation of HBCU officials on the trip to Beijing where the memorandum of understanding was signed between the schools and the Chinese government last July. The Beijing delegation included school administrators from the following HBCUs: Tougaloo College, Hampton University, Bowie State University, Spelman College, Howard University, Morehouse College, Xavier University, and Morgan State University. Even though the eligibility requirements and selection process for the Zhi-Xing China—Perfect World U.S.-China Young Leaders Fellowships still needs to be finalized, officials with the Thurgood Marshall College Fund said that students will begin traveling to China for the exchange program in July 2015. Taylor said that the world is huge and that the most important thing that HBCU students need to know about the program is that opportunities exist not only in the U.S., but also around the world. “Our students can’t be limited by the job market in the U.S.,” added Taylor. “They have to think globally. Our community has to get on board.”

Metro Briefs: Notable news in and around Washington District of Columbia Campaign against media stereotypes and gender-based violence launches on Jan. 20
A
campaign to combat the impact of stereotypical representations of women of color in the media and help curtail gender-based violence will open at Howard University on Tuesday, Jan. 20, when the Redefining HERstory program kicks off. The initiative will be launched at the College of Medicine Auditorium, Room B5, from 5 p.m.-6:30 p.m. It is sponsored by Truth in Reality, a media advocacy organization whose goal is to combat the negative effects of stereotypical representations of women of color in media, especially on violent reality shows. The Redefining HERstory Campus Social Action Program is part of a larger Redefining HERstory Public Awareness Movement that will continue to run after the Campus Program concludes at Howard in March, during Women’s
District of Columbia Howard University appoints Shelley Davis as interim athletic director Howard University today named Shelley Davis as interim director of intercollegiate athletics while launching a search for a permanent successor. Davis joined Howard University in July 2011 as the senior associate athletic director and senior woman administrator. She served as a member of the senior leadership team and was responsible for the administration of the internal operations of the 19 intercollegiate sports and the 40 staff members and coaches and 375 student athletes who make up the department. Davis succeeds Louis “Skip” Perkins as director. Perkins is leaving to pursue other professional
History Month. Sil Lai Abrams, National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) award-winning writer and a domestic violence activist for women of color, created Redefining HERstory to provide students with tools to help reshape the violent and over sexualized stereotypes of women of color in the media, especially on reality television. The program also attempts to educate them about the links between media violence and domestic and sexual violence and increase male accountability for preventing gender-based violence. Howard is the fourth university to embrace the campaign. Redefining HERstory is being brought to Howard through the School of Communications’ Media Messaging Fellowship. Established in 2012 by Tom Burrell, a member of the American Advertising Hall of Fame and founder of Burrell Communications in Chicago, the fellowship creates opportunities for students and faculty researchers to investigate the impact of media messages on African Americans and explores ways to improve African-American images in the media.
Recent studies have revealed that violent reality shows have an adverse effect on the emotional development of young women and girls and can predispose men towards violent behavior towards women. Roughly half of all reality shows feature cast members primarily comprised of women of color whose behaviors reinforce damaging stereotypes that normalize relational aggression against women of color, including university-aged women who are at greater risk than their White counterparts to be victims of sexual and domestic violence. Redefining HERstory will challenge students on their existing belief systems around gender-based violence and redefine society’s existing negative narrative of Black women by using the media messaging on reality television as the basis for this much needed conversation,” said Sil Lai Abrams. For additional information on Truth in Reality, Redefining HERstory and existing partnerships, or to join the cause and download the Media Advocacy Toolkit, please visit TruthInReality.org.
endeavors. “Since arriving at Howard, Mrs. Davis has played a critical role in the academic progress of the Howard Athletics program and the overall operations of the department,” said President Wayne A.I. Frederick. “We are grateful to Mrs. Davis for taking helm of the Department of Athletics.” The University has made a commitment to invest in student athletics so that participants develop fully. “Howard University has an athletic program that is ready to flourish nationally and compete for championships on a regular basis,” said President Frederick. “It is my expectation that we can compete both academically and athletically, graduating well-rounded students ready to serve their community and represent Howard University with pride.” “I am honored to lead the Department of Athletics during this transitional period,” said Davis.
“The focus of the department will continue to be on the success of our students, both on and off the field.” Prior to joining the Bison family, Davis was assistant commissioner for championships and senior woman administrator at the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC), director of education and professional development at the National Association of Collegiate Women Athletic Administrators (NACWAA), and assistant athletic director at North Carolina A&T State University (A&T). Davis graduated with honors from North Carolina Central University and was recently honored by her alma mater as one of their 40 Under 40 Distinguished Alumni. She is a graduate of the 2011 NCAA Leadership Institute and attended the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics Senior Administrator Mentoring Institute.
