Chavis, a civil rights icon himself, makes the case for a movement that is needed today more than five decades ago.

By Nathan Hardin Special to the NNPA from The Fayetteville Observer PEMBROKE – Civil rights leader Benjamin Chavis kicked off a week-long Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. celebration last month in Pembroke by saying a civil rights movement is of greater need in the state now than it was nearly five decades ago. “One of the last things that Dr. King said before his assassination was that we must strive toward economic justice as well as racial justice,” said Chavis. “That’s certainly true. There’s too much poverty. Too many people are still near foreclosure. So we’ve got some work to do. I would say in 2015 we need a civil rights movement today more than we needed it years ago.” Chavis, a native of Oxford, was an assistant to King, who inspired him to work in the civil rights movement in the 1960s. Chavis was one of the Wilmington 10, nine black men and a white woman, who were convicted of fire-bombing a grocery store in Wilmington during racial unrest in 1971. The convictions were overturned based on evidence of perjury and prosecutorial misconduct. The group was later granted gubernatorial pardons. During a VIP reception at the

University of North Carolina at Pembroke, the 66-year-old told students and faculty the state was divided into two North Carolinas. “One progressive and one reactionary,” he said. “One going forward and one going backward.” He commended the Rev. William Barber, who has led Moral Monday protests since spring 2013 in response to legislation passed by the Republican-led General Assembly. “I think that we’re now celebrating the legacy and dream of Dr. Martin Luther King and certainly Dr. King’s legacy falls on the progressive side,” he said as he mingled with the crowd. “I’m hoping people use the 2015 King ceremonies to reaffirm the importance of inclusiveness.” As a young teacher in Lumberton City Schools, Frances Cummings remembered following Chavis after the Wilmington 10. “He empowered me with his ideas, his thoughts and his action,” she said. “As a result of listening and following him, it gave me strength to be a change agent, a shaper and mover – to make things better for the total population.” Cummings, 73, saw firsthand school integration and discrimination in the late ’60s, she said, and used Chavis’ experience for motivation. She moved on from teaching school to a successful political

career, serving in the N.C. House of Representatives. “Fortunately or unfortunately, I helped to integrate the Lumberton City Schools, and it was my experiences there that caused me to be more determined for change,” she said. “To work with all people, to bring all people together for the good of the cause, which was what he was doing.” Chavis also spoke directly to a group of students who were among the roughly 30 people during the week’s events. “To all of the young students here, your college educations are probably the most important years of your life,” he said. “You’re not only laying an academic foundation, but you’re laying the foundation with how you’re going to interact with the larger world.” Jamar Smith, a 21-year-old senior, said Chavis is a Phi Beta Sigma fraternity brother and said he came out to hear Chavis’ remarks on community service and the civil rights movement. “Being able to listen to him as a fraternity brother who worked with Dr. Martin Luther King and to see where he’s come from and all the work he’s done kind of gives us a second wind to push forward and to use what he’s done and to try to implement it today in our work and our service,” said Smith.

A boost for the American dream

Finance

By Charlene Crowell NNPA Columnist About 800,000 homeowners whose mortgages were backed by the Federal Housing Administration (FHA) could save $900 annually on mortgage costs, due to a small reduction in mortgage insurance (MI) premiums. President Barack Obama made the announcement in a recent speech in Phoenix, one of the cities hardest hit by the nation’s housing crisis. By reducing the MI rate by only a half-percent, the move is also expected to enable 250,000 new homebuyers to afford an FHA mortgage. Administration officials predict that in coming years, the fee reduction will save borrowers with similarly-financed mortgages billions of dollars and also boost the housing market’s long-term recovery. In his address, the president connected the financial concerns of everyday people to his new initiative designed to spur broader housing recovery. “It’s not just the economy turning around,” said President Obama. “It’s turning around the lives of hardworking people. … Buying a home has always been about more than owning a roof and four walls. It’s about investing savings, and building a family.” The move is also likely to benefit consumers of color who tend to secure FHA-backed mortgages far more than private, conventional ones. In 2013, the most recent mortgage data available from the Home Mortgage Disclosure Act, although conventional mortgage originations rose slightly from the previous year, 2012, Black consumers nationwide received only 2.3 percent or 36,903 loans. In 2012, the same data point was even smaller, with only 26,500 such loans. To add some context to this low number of private, conventional mortgages, the Chicago suburb of Calumet City with a population of 37,240 is larger than the number of loans made to the nation’s Black homebuyers last year. Typically, 30-year conventional mortgages are free from mortgage insurance premiums when home down payments are 20 percent or

Homeowners especially minorities welcome the reduction in mortgage insurance.

larger. Over the course of the loan, these are the mortgages that wind up costing borrowers less money. By contrast, borrowers who can afford a monthly mortgage payment but only have a low down payment have frequently turned to FHA. One term on these government-backed loans is to charge a mortgage insurance premium. Housing and consumer advocates were swift to praise the president’s announcement. Mike Calhoun, Center for Responsible Lending (CRL) president said, “This decision is financially sound, socially responsible, and good policy all at once. Homebuyers, homeowners and taxpayers will all benefit.” Similarly, Julia Gordon, Director of Housing Finance and Policy at the Center for American Progress, noted, “The president correctly observes that owning a house is about far more than putting a roof over your head. It’s also about stability and community for you and your kids – creating a place to call home. What’s more, for many families, home ownership builds wealth that can be passed down for generations.” Yet, not all housing stakeholders were in agreement. In a prepared statement issued on the heels of the president’s address, the U.S. Mortgage Insurers issued a statement that, in part, said, “Mortgage insurers putting their own capital at risk should be preferred to government risk taking, consistent with the principles put forward by the Administration for housing reform.

The MI industry has the capacity and capability to further reduce taxpayer risk and lower costs for many home buyers while expanding access to mortgage credit.” While this segment of the housing industry may have the capacity to lower costs for many prospective homebuyers, the post-recession consumer experience did not translate into more mortgage access. The combination of higher pricing for lower-wealth borrowers, along with historically-tight credit standards dramatically limited access to home ownership for low to moderateincome borrowers and continued to pose a serious challenge to the mortgage market as a whole. Limiting home purchase opportunities also has larger economic consequences. New homeowners fuel consumer spending, especially on big-ticket appliances. These major purchases then enhance local governments’ ability to deliver services as a result of higher sales tax revenues. Most importantly, lost opportunities for home ownership means fewer families will have the opportunity to have that investment build wealth to pass down across generations. As President Obama observed, it is time to help “more families afford having their own piece of the American Dream.” Charlene Crowell is a communications manager with the Center for Responsible Lending. Bishop Jackson of Beltsville, Maryland, is among leaders that are trying to address the issue of race in America today.

By Adelle M. Banks Religion News Service As protests against police brutality and the killing of unarmed black men continue from coast to coast, religious leaders are spearheading church-based gatherings to find ways to bridge America’s racial divide. On the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday, Baptists from different traditions convened by former President Jimmy Carter met in Atlanta, as Christians from a range of perspectives gathered in Dallas in a meeting hosted by Bishop T.D. Jakes. This March, a racially diverse group of Southern Baptists will meet in Nashville, Tennessee. Religion News Service asked leaders from each of the gatherings to talk about the root causes of the nation’s racial divide and possible next steps. Here are their responses: President Jimmy Carter: “It is good for all of us to remember that the glorious achievements of King, Andy Young and other civil rights heroes have not been permanent and always need to be in the forefront of our national priorities. Equal rights must be a continuing concern and commitment. Religious groups and communities can be an avenue for better communication and understanding. “The recent dramatic reminders in Ferguson, New York City, and other places of biased treatment of African Americans by some police forces should be treated as positive opportunities for improvement,

as an incentive for more equitable hiring policies and careful training in law enforcement. Proposals for cameras to be worn by police officers and for a more reasonable approach to tanks, personnel carriers, and other wartime armaments being channeled into local police forces are worthy corrective steps to be considered. “We must also appreciate the very difficult challenges being faced every day by police, firefighters, and other people who protect our lives and safety.” Russell Moore, president of the Southern Baptist Convention’s Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission “We have seen with renewed clarity over the last few months that a “post-racial” America is a myth. That idea is especially contradicted by a criminal justice system in which young AfricanAmerican men are, by almost any measure, disproportionately more likely to be arrested, sentenced, or even killed when compared to White peers. “So what should we do? “We cannot shrug reality off with apathy. Working toward justice in this arena will mean consciences that are sensitive to the problem. But how can we get there when White people do not face the same experiences as us? “The answer for the Body of Christ starts with a robust doctrine of the church lived out in local congregations under the lordship of Christ. In the church, we belong to one another, we are a part of one body. We ought to be reminded

that in a racially divided world, the church of Jesus Christ ought not simply to advocate for racial reconciliation; we ought to embody it. We ought to speak to the structures of society about principles of morality and righteousness, but we also ought to model those principles in our congregations. The quest for racial reconciliation comes not just through proclamation, but through demonstration.” Bishop Harry Jackson, pastor of Hope Christian Church in Beltsville, Maryland The race problem in America is complicated by the fact that America envisions herself as a meritocracy. This means that gifting, skill and personal ability will allow any American to climb out of poverty into the promised land of opportunity. Unfortunately, class, poverty, and race obscure minority Americans’ vision of the American dream. In our divided society, only the church can model unity. We must lead the way in erasing the disparities in U.S. education, our criminal justice system, and in urban economic development. We plan to showcase their best practices on our website, while believing God to multiply the number and impact of churches and ministries. In addition, we also want to increase the diversity seen by the unbelieving world. In conclusion, we believe that the Lord has entrusted the church in this generation with an opportunity to preach the gospel to the world against the backdrop of the darkness of this present age.

AME Church leaders push economic empowerment

the support of two Black-owned businesses. They chose Thomas Morehead, president of a BMW dealership in Sterling, Virginia and Donnell Thompson, co-founder/ co-owner of RWDT Foods, Inc., a chain of restaurants based in Snellville, Georgia. Weaver’s hope is that the AME church members buying from those two businesses will cause the churches to benefit from those sales, then identify other businesses in and around the states and replicate the process. The objective is that after tracking the sales initiated by the churches, other church districts will get involved and the movement will spread to other businesses and churches. “And we certainly hope and pray that this will become a much larger Black faith effort and we will reach out to the Baptist community, the Church of God and Christ and the list goes on,” said Weaver. So far, the congregations have been receptive to the idea. According to a recent Pew Report, in terms of relative wealth, White America is 20 times richer

Robert Eubanks/District Chronicles

(TriceEdneyWire.com) – When the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated, he and other protestors had won passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965. His agenda then turned toward the next major issue: the economic empowerment of Black people. On April 3, 1968, while planning a march on behalf of oppressed sanitation workers, Dr. King told preachers at the Mason Temple in Memphis, Tennessee, “It’s all right to talk about the New Jerusalem, but one day, God’s preacher must talk about the new New York, the new Atlanta, the new Philadelphia, the new Los Angeles, the new Memphis, Tennessee. This is what we have to do.” The next day, he was assassinated. As America celebrated King’s birthday nearly 47 years later, a group of church leaders appears to be carrying out this Black economic empowerment goal in earnest. Invited to speak to a recent gathering of pastors and leaders of the

African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church, National Bankers Association President Michael Grant cited the words of human rights champion Paul Robeson: ‘“We realize that our future lies chiefly in our own hands. We know that neither institution nor friends can make a race stand unless it has strength in its own foundation.’” He continued in his own words: “We played a major role in growing America from a small colonial outpost to the greatest industrial giant the world has ever known. We don’t have to argue about our ability to grow wealth. We have made everyone else rich, some filthy rich. Isn’t it time that we finally make our efforts productive for ourselves?” Rev. Jonathon Weaver, senior pastor of Greater Mt. Nebo A.M.E. Church in Bowie, Maryland, says AME pastors are now poised to carry out a specific plan that they hope will spread and ultimately catch fire in other denominations and the Black community throughout 2015. The starting plan is for churches located in the AME Second District – North Carolina, Virginia, Maryland and D.C. – to commit to

than Black America. Grant said African Americans lost significant ground in business ownership after integration, largely because African Americans were no longer forced to support each other. “As long as we were forced to trade with each other and barter with each other, our businesses – small as they were – thrived,” said Grant. “When the doors of integration gave us the long-awaited pass to wine and dine with our former oppressors, we enthusiastically abandoned our own in search of an elusive White acceptance. We believed then – and many of us still

do – that association would bring on assimilation.” King concluded on April 3, 1968, the eve of his assassination: “We’ve got to stay together and maintain unity. You know, whenever Pharaoh wanted to prolong the period of slavery in Egypt, he had a favorite, favorite formula for doing it. What was that? He kept the slaves fighting among themselves. But whenever the slaves get together, something happens in Pharaoh’s court, and he cannot hold the slaves in slavery. When the slaves get together, that’s the beginning of getting out of slavery. Now let us maintain unity.”

Black educators divided on Obama free community college plan By Freddie Allen NNPA Senior Washington Correspondent (NNPA) – Black college educators and supporters are sharply split over whether President Obama’s proposal offering free two-year community college education would hurt or harm HBCUs. Lezli Baskerville, president and CEO of the National Association for Equal Opportunity in Higher Education (NAFEO), a nonprofit network of HBCUs and Predominantly Black Institutions (PBIs), said that America’s College Promise would create another opportunity for students who have a gap in funding or that choose to go to a two-year institution and don’t have adequate funding, She says that the jury is still out on whether a student would opt to go to a two-year college for free instead of going to an HBCU. “If they’re going to a two-year institution, they’re going to get a certificate or a two-year degree, something to get them market-

ready or entrepreneurship-ready,” explained Baskerville. “If they’re going to a four-year HBCU, they’re going because they appreciate the ethos of historic Black colleges that are built on the traditions of the African-American community of family, faith, fellowship, service and social justice.” “My fear is a real one and [it’s] that this is going to significantly, negatively impact private HBCUs, and I think it’s going to have some negative impact on public HBCUs,” said Johnny Taylor, president and CEO of the Thurgood Marshall College Fund, an education advocacy group that represents about 300,000 students and 47 member colleges and universities. “Mama and Daddy are going to say, ‘If you can go to community college for free, that’s where you are going the first two years.’ So, what you have essentially done is cut in half the revenue for private HBCUs. Private HBCUs are going to feel this in a way you can’t even imagine.” Ivory Toldson, the deputy director of the White House Initiative

Jarvis Christian College President Lester C. Newman is concerned that free community college could hurt HBCUs.

on Historically Black Colleges and Universities, argues that enrollment at HBCUs has already taken a hit, because of state-level policy choices. Using Southern University in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, as an example, he said that when he taught at the school in 2005, there were 10,000 students enrolled, and over the last decade that number has dwindled to 6,000. Over the same period, community college attendance increased to about 9,000 students.

Toldson suspects the fall in enrollment at Southern University had more to do with admission requirements changes that affected all state universities in Louisiana than direct competition from community colleges in the region. The new guidelines bar Southern University from admitting students that scored less than 20 on their ACT exams. According to data collected by the ACT program, Black graduating high school seniors scored an average of 17 on the exam in 2014, compared to White students who scored 22.3 on average. “By 2020, an estimated 35 percent of job openings will require at least a bachelor’s degree and 30 percent will require some college or an associate’s degree,” said White House officials. “Forty percent of college students are enrolled at one of America’s more than 1,100 community colleges, which offer students affordable tuition, open admission policies, and convenient locations.” Seventy-five percent of the funding for the proposal will come

from the federal government with participating states contributing the rest of the money needed to cover tuition costs. White House officials estimate that the program will cost the federal government $60 billion over 10 years, if all states participate. Baskerville said NAFEO is already working with The Links Inc., an international professional women’s group, to pair HBCUs with two-year community colleges in their service area in an effort to provide students with the experience of attending a four-year institution as they earn college credits at the local community college. White House officials hope that taking the costs of tuition off the table for two-years will help to ease some of those burdens, possibly improving graduation rates in the process.. Referring to the Obama community college proposal, Newman said, “It’s going to change how we operate in higher education. Whether that’s good or bad, we don’t know yet.”

Huckabee: gay marriage doesn’t end at Supreme Court By Susan Page USA Today

Gage Skidmore/Creative Commons

NEW YORK (RNS) – Former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee, a likely contender for the 2016 GOP presidential nomination and a leading voice for Christian conservatives, said last week, that governors and state legislatures should consider ways to resist a Supreme Court decision that recognized same-sex marriage as a constitutional right. Huckabee likened such a ruling to the notorious Dred Scott case before the Civil War in which the Supreme Court said African Americans couldn’t be citizens. Pushing back against such an opinion “is not without historical and judicial precedence,” he said in an interview promoting his new book, “God, Guns, Grits, and Gravy,” published Wednesday last week by St. Martin’s Press. ‘We have a constitutional amendment in our constitution,” he said on USA Today’s Capital Download. “Do we want to hold to

that? Do we want to put it before a referendum of the people? I mean, there are a lot of different angles to pursue it. (Or) you could just surrender and say, ‘OK, we just agree that the court is right.’” Whatever the legal basis for Huckabee’s stance – and constitutional scholars question whether there is one – as a political matter his fervent opposition all but guarantees that the issue of gay marriage will be prominent in the GOP presidential marriage, some of them, including New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, have said court decisions recognizing the right make it a settled question. Huckabee disagrees. “Rather than just immediately capitulate to nine people in robes, and what it will probably be is five people in robes against four people who disagree ... then you have a very, very divided court,” he told the weekly newsmaker series. “Do we really surrender the entire American system of government to five people, unelected, appointed for life, with no consequences

Mike Huckabee

for the decisions they make? The founders never intended for there to be such incredible, almost unlimited power, put in the hands of so few people.” But Erwin Chemerinsky, dean of the University of California Law School, Irvine, said states would have no options if the Supreme Court decided that laws prohibiting same-sex marriage violated the Constitution. “There have been efforts by states to circumvent or ignore Supreme Court decisions, most notably the intense Southern resistance to Brown v. Board of Education and

desegregation,” said Chemerinsky. “The Supreme Court made it clear that its ruling was the law of the land. This will be no different.” The issue has been joined, he noted. “Already, marriage equality exists in 36 states, mostly because of court decisions, and there has not been the type of resistance Huckabee suggests.” Still, it is a sign of Huckabee’s appeal to the evangelical Christians who are among the GOP’s most loyal voters that his new book immediately shot to No. 1 in sales among political books on Amazon and into the top 100 among books of all sorts. In his folksy, conversational style, he unfavorably contrasts New York, Los Angeles and Washington, D.C. – places he dubs “Bubble-ville” – with those from the heartland, which he dubs “Bubba-ville.” At one point in the book, he discussed how “goooood” it is to eat game. “I’m sorry if that sounds cruel to any vegan readers,” he added. “(And are there any? Raise your

hands, if you have the strength.)” In the interview, Huckabee also: Acknowledged he was likely to make his second bid for the White House. He also ran in 2008. “If everything continues to work well and I sense that there is, say, the proper financial and political support, then I think it’s a given that that’s where the destination is.” Predicted former president Bill Clinton would be an asset to his wife, Hillary Rodham Clinton, if she runs for the Democratic nomination. “I mean, he had a good presidency. I’m a Republican but I admire good governing.” Dismissed as overblown a furor over comments in his new book criticizing Beyonce and Jay-Z for using sexually explicit lyrics, and the president and First Lady for allowing their daughters to listen to them. “I do think they’re good parents,” he said of the Obamas, adding he has some of Beyonce’s songs on his iPhone.

DETROIT (NNPA) – During the media week leading up to the 2015 North American International Auto Show, General Motors (GM) not only revealed new models and concept cars like other automakers, they also showcased the importance of diversity in the company’s ranks. At “Design by Detroit,” an event hosted by GM that featured local artists, industry insiders and a custom-painted Stingray, three young, minority designers shared their experiences working for the embattled, century-old auto company. Ven Lai, the lead creative designer for the Chevrolet Color and Trim Studio, said that after joining GM in 2007, she learned that the company appreciated passion for design and that when artists from different cultures and backgrounds lend their input to the process, the car, the customer and the brand benefit. Crystal Windham, the first African-American female design director at GM, currently leads the Chevrolet Passenger Car & Small Crossover Interiors department. Windham’s work was featured in the 2014 Chevrolet Impala and the all-new electric hybrid Chevrolet Volt. “As designers, we’ve been empowered,” said Windham in her official press bio. “There is an exciting renaissance at GM and I am thrilled to be a part of it.” Martin Davis, the design manager for the Exterior lighting and North American exterior Design,

said that Windham has already left her mark on the interior design of Chevrolet passenger cars and that consumers will see even more of her influence on that segment very shortly as new products are rolled out. Davis, who led the team that redesigned the exterior lighting for the new Cadillac Escalade said that working on the iconic sports utility vehicle was humbling and surreal. “But you quickly get past that and embrace the challenge,” said Davis, who started his career with GM when he was 22 years old. “Working with new technologies like [light emitting diodes] enables us to do a number of things we haven’t done before.” Ed Welburn, vice president of Global Design and General Motors, said that he still loves the look on a designer’s face when their concept is selected for a new project. “I don’t care if they’re right out of school or if they’ve been with the company 40 years,” Welburn smiled. “They have that look on their face like they’re eight years old.” Welburn, who studied sculpture and design at Howard University and joined the automaker when President Richard Nixon was still in the White House, is the first executive to lead all of the company’s Global Design Centers in the United States, Germany, Korea, China, Australia, Brazil and India. The GM veteran said that he enjoyed knitting together a global team of studios, where everyone really knows and supports one another. Like cultural diversity overseas, Welburn said gender and ethnic diversity in the United States is ex-

tremely important to GM and considers his involvement in the evolving diversity mission at GM a part of his legacy. He admitted that there are not nearly as many Blacks and other minorities in the company as he would like. Recruiting Blacks for STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) careers isn’t just a GM problem, it’s an American one. A 2014 study on STEM workers by the Joint Center for Political and Economic Studies, a nonpartisan think tank focused on racial equity, reported that Blacks account for less than 4 percent of workers in science and engineering jobs. Meanwhile, industries that are more dependent on STEM-related workers are expected to grow at nearly twice the rate as sectors that are less dependent on STEM workers. That’s why the decorated auto exec is working with Detroit-area middle school and high school students, mostly African American, to identify the ones who want to attend CCS and offers them scholarships. Anita Burke, the chief engineer of the GMC Canyon, a mid-sized truck, said that when she was younger, women didn’t go into design or engineering. That was considered men’s work. Burke thought about going into nursing or teaching, because that is what people expected her to do. “Many kids these days have zero understanding of what the auto industry is and depth of the things that you can do,” she continued. “You don’t have to be a CEO of a company, if that’s really not your passion, you just gotta’ love what you do.”

umentary-style film about love, art and activism, tells the story of one of the most enduring couples of our time, Ruby Dee and Ossie Davis. Their achievements – as partners in a loving marriage of 57 years, as pioneers in Black theater, as civil rights activists and recipients of the National Medal of Arts and the Kennedy Center Honors – parallel nearly a century of change in America. As the filmmaker, their grandson Ali fights to learn from and to preserve their values and wisdom. Based on candid questions, revealing conversations and never-before-seen family footage, “Life’s Essentials with Ruby Dee” shares the knowledge of these two icons with the present generation and cements the legacy of the couple. “This life-affirming program celebrates the legacies of Ruby Dee

and Ossie Davis in a very personal way,” said Edmund C. Fleet, Chair of the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities. “The Commission consistently strives to bring arts and humanities to the District of Columbia through special events that raise our collective awareness to highlight the transformational power of the arts.” “’Life’s Essentials with Ruby Dee’ honors two important leaders of the African-American cultural community,” said Lionell Thomas, Executive Director of the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities. “Their commitment to love, art and activism, during the civil rights era and beyond, is revered through their creativity and courage as artists and activists.” Doors open at 6 p.m. and the film begins at 7 p.m.
