(TriceEdneyWire.com) – Several times in recent weeks I’ve written about domestic violence. I wanted to get off the subject, but these athletes just won’t help. The problem isn’t just Ray Rice, Ray McDonald or other abusive players in the NFL. Paul George in the NBA proved that with his silly tweets. Several times in recent weeks I’ve written about domestic violence— but I can’t let this subject go. I’m alarmed by the increase of violence by law enforcement, “gangsta” rappers, athletes and others against women. Each time it happens I feel sick, and the fear and sickness I felt for years after being abused in a similar manner comes back as if it happened just yesterday. Any woman who’s ever been abused never forgets. No matter what she might say about wanting to work through the problem with the one who abused her, deep down she knows it will never be the same. If he raises his voice when he talks to her, she feels the same fear she felt when he actually hit her. She panics if she finds herself backed into a corner, alone on a long hallway or when she can’t

see what’s ahead of her around a bend. I’ve been there, so I know what it feels like and it happens whether you stay or whether you walk away. Some abusers threaten that if you leave them, they will find you, sometimes adding that they’ll kill you when they do. That’s always in the back of your mind as you try to move on with your life. One day, he dies and that’s the first time you feel relief since the first time he battered you. You wish you could erase the memory, but the violence continues and it feels like it happened to you again. Though you don’t know the woman involved, you feel like you know her because you feel what she feels. Black women are especially vulnerable because of the extra stress race carries for many Black men. Black women have many of the same stresses, but we have learned to cope with them and carry on. Abusers never seem to learn that it’s not okay to knock a woman out because they disagree with them or because they’re angry about something that has nothing to do with them. She just happens to be conveniently there. It’s espe-

cially egregious when the person beaten is someone you profess to love or who is pregnant, as in the case of Ray McDonald in San Francisco. Michael Vick received greater punishment for abusing a dog than many abusers get for what they do to women. My heart is heavy for Janay Rice as she tries to relieve Ray of responsibility for his brutality. She’s the one who was knocked unconscious! As a Black woman who’s been abused at the hand of a spouse, I know how hard it is to see a Black man punished. Yet, I would say to one who decides not to have abusers prosecuted, this isn’t the way to stop the barbaric treatment. We must speak out no matter who the abuser is. Many of us have loved men through thick and thin and have swept this problem under the rug. We must rise up against anyone who abuses us – physically, verbally or mentally. We risk our own lives when we protect abusers. If they abused you once, chances are high they’ll do it again. We must be there for each other and help each other overcome the fear of leaving abusers. I love men, but I hate abusers. We can’t continue to just let it go.

Caught in a data breach? Reclaim your identity (BPT) -- By the end of the first quarter of 2014, more than 200 data breaches compromised millions of consumer records, according to the Identity Theft Resource Center, which keeps track of reported data breaches. Stunned? Data breach stats are even more staggering if you’re among the millions of Americans caught up in one every year. In addition to the potential monetary loss and identity theft risks, data breaches can also rob you of your sense of security and confidence. When you learn you’ve been involved in a data breach, it’s important to take steps to help protect your identity and financial accounts, and to rebuild your sense of security. Often, breached organizations will offer affected customers some form of credit monitoring for a set period of time, usually one year after the breach. While such services may go a long way toward making you feel more secure, be sure you understand exactly what the offered product can - and can’t - do to

help you recover from the potential impact of a data breach. Consumers whose personal or financial information is compromised in a data breach may be at greater risk of experiencing identity theft. In 2013, more than 13 million Americans experienced identity fraud, according to a study by Javelin Strategy. Credit monitoring products aim to help minimize identity theft risks by keeping an eye on your credit accounts, where evidence of potential fraud and identity theft may first appear. Identifying such signs early may help mitigate some of the damages associated with identity theft. While it’s true that consumers can do on their own virtually everything a credit monitoring product does, going it alone can sometimes be time-consuming and burdensome. Convenience is a significant benefit of a credit monitoring product. Not all credit monitoring products are alike, however, and if a company offers you this product in the wake of a data breach, don’t hesitate to carefully review the

product and ask questions, including: Does the product provide daily monitoring of credit files? Will you receive timely alerts of key changes in your credit files? Does the product monitor your credit file at all three of the major credit reporting agencies, or only one? For example, Equifax Complete monitors information from all three bureaus. Are financial alerts included, and is it possible to link your bank and credit card accounts to the monitoring product? This allows you to be alerted when withdrawals from your bank account and/ or charges to your credit card are processed, based on threshold amounts that you define. Is Internet scanning for your Social Security Number and credit card numbers included? This may help detect unauthorized posting

Data breaches in reputable companies are frequent today and can compromise your identity.

of your Social Security number and credit card numbers on certain suspicious trading sites.

If a breached company cannot answer these questions, or you’re not satisfied that the credit monitoring product being offered is comprehensive enough for your needs, you may need to take additional steps. First, you should ask the breached company for a different product. Such companies are in-

creasingly aware of the impact data breaches can have on their reputation, and may be more willing to engage with those customers who feel they’re not receiving an appropriate response in the wake of a data breach. If a company refuses to respond to your request, consider also subscribing to a more suitable product of your choice on your own -- it can be a key step toward regaining some confidence and peace of mind when you’re a data breach victim.

T

he weather had shifted and the wind blew brisker than the previous month of August. Fall was approaching and the sense of change buzzed in the air. It’s what around 30 marchers felt as they gathered in front of the Supreme Court of the United States building in Washington, D.C. The routinely heavily guarded building swarmed with even more police officers who watched the scene unfold. More than two dozen people responded to #Knitabrick tweets calling to march from the Supreme Court to Congress, demanding Congress to fix Hobby Lobby. Although the group was small in numbers, their yelps of “Boss’ religion? Not my job description!” filled First St. They brought with them 1,500 knitted bricks and laid them down in three 15-foot-long rectangles. Their goal was to carry these bricks from the Supreme Court building to the Congress and that they did. “The wall is a visual demonstration of people’s anger about the Hobby Lobby decision and it’s also a way to show Congress a visual reminder that they have the ability to change it,” said Lauren Anderson Youngblood, director of communications at Secular Coalition for America. Each yarn brick was hand knitted and donated by people outraged by the Supreme Court’s ruling in the case of Burwell v. Hobby Lobby, which gave closely held companies the right to opt out of covering contraceptive they objected to on religious grounds. The walls of knitted bricks represented the separation of church and state. The Supreme Court’s 5-4 ruling in Burwell v. Hobby Lobby stated closely held, defined as a small number of shareholders, for-profit corporations could be exempt from providing certain coverage under the Affordable Healthcare Act mandate, like emergency contraceptive, if it violets sincere religious beliefs. The majority’s ruling was supported by the Religious Freedom Restoration Act, or RFRA, of 1993. Hobby Lobby is an arts and crafts store with over 600 locations

Marchers held signs in front of the Supreme Court early September.

nationwide and employs more than 23,000 people. It’s listed as number 135 out of 224 on Forbes’ America’s Largest Private Companies. As of Dec. 2013, the company earned $3.3 billion in revenue. On their website it states, “Honoring the Lord in all we do by operating the company in a manner consistent with Biblical principles.” The Supreme Court ruled that Hobby Lobby has sincere religious beliefs that emergency contraceptive, like Plan B One-Step, is abortion. But an academic review by Princeton University states emergency contraceptives are not the same as abortion pills, like Mifepristone. Emergency contraceptives prevent pregnancy by delaying or inhibiting ovulation. It can take up to six days for an egg to become fertilized and that’s the reason emergency contraceptives work. “Contraceptive is medically necessary for some women,” Anderson Youngblood said. “A women’s health shouldn’t be put in jeopardy. Her health care decisions shouldn’t be infringed upon. Her access to certain medicines and procedures shouldn’t be interfered with due to an employer’s personal religious beliefs.” Women were not the only ones who showed up. Two men drove from Michigan, a nine hour trip, to participate in the march. “It’s a matter of human rights,” said Austin Edwards, a junior Mechanical Engineer Major at Kettering University. More than a dozen men joined the cause on Tuesday. Joy Wilson, a Howard sopho-

more sports management major said that many girls at Howard get their birth control for free. “If Howard was to take away access to free contraceptives, students would be very upset because they lack insurance or the funds to pay for it on their own,” she said. But she was unaware of the case prior to this interview. “If my employer were to deny me that right and that option, I would be personally offended,” said Lindsay Black, a Howard junior elementary education major. ³I think that a lot of people have their opinions on if they are pro-life or prochoice, but their opinions should not impinge on somebody else’s life.” Black, too, was unfamiliar of the case prior to this interview. “Congress has the ability to change this disastrous decision by either appealing RFRA or by passing another piece of legislation that limits employers’ ability to impose their religious beliefs on employees,” said Anderson Youngblood. There’s also fear other companies will use the exemption to opt out of paying for other medical medicines and procedures. “It’s a slippery slope,” said Anderson Youngblood. “For example, Jehovah’s Witnesses refuse could refuse covering blood transfusions due to a moral code. According to the US National Library of Medicine, blood transfusions on average costs $343 per session. What if an individual has severe anemia and their company refuses to allow coverage because the owners are Jehovah’s Witnesses?”

Student in Georgetown University registers to vote on national voter registration day.

By Tom Ehrich Religion News Service

M

uch is at stake in this year’s midterm elections.

A low voter turnout would be disheartening. If people get the government they vote for, then not voting at all distorts the outcome. The stay-at-home party can’t be read, can’t be responded to or taken seriously. African Americans in Ferguson, Mo., haven’t been voting there, and the result has been a White government employing a white police force. A do-nothing Congress must be called to account. Trying to undermine a president and selling out the nation to get re-elected aren’t acts of governance. They are a mockery of legislative duty. The world has grown more dangerous. We need wisdom in office, not ideological fervor. We need statesmen, not partisan hacks. We need people who know how to work together and to compromise. The U.S. economy is struggling. People are suffering from unemployment, subpar wages, lack of opportunities and anger

over perceived unfairness. If we slide further into oligarchy, the entire nation will pay a stiff penalty in further inequities and further inefficiencies in the marketplace. Some legislators are itching to undo the social safety net. Among the targeted programs: Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, the Affordable Care Act and certain basic regulatory practices that rein in irresponsible banks, polluters and monopolists. If this is what the voters want, then fine. Majority rules. But in the absence of voters’ voices being raised at the polls, those serving the rich can claim their actions are helpful to all, not just to their patrons. I know religious communities get squeamish about venturing at all into political matters -- even though Jesus himself devoted twothirds of his teaching to wealth and power, the very essence of politics. The threat of losing tax-exempt status seems to paralyze many religious leaders. So does the threat of offending their own constituents. Imagine preaching radical generosity to the wealthy, as Jesus did. Imagine preaching justice to the intolerant, as Jesus did. That squeamishness isn’t go-

ing to vanish soon. But religious communities still can contribute by working in voter registration drives and get-out-the-vote campaigns on Election Day. That isn’t a partisan exercise, though some ideologues always want to paint it that way. It’s basic patriotism. The more Americans who vote, the more we have a stake in the system. Voter support is especially important in areas where one party is working to discourage voters, in some cases enacting regulations that make voting more difficult by, say, African Americans and immigrants. Imagine churches that do more than open their doors as polling stations, but also send registration teams out in advance to get voters on the rolls, and then Election Day teams to help voters get to the polls and, in some cases, endure hassling by partisans. This is a variant on a larger theme for churches: Get outside and help people; don’t just open building doors and wait for people to come in. Cover Will Ferguson spur Black youth to the polls? By Khalil Abdullah Special to the Trice Edney News Wire from New America Media

A

week before National Voter Registration Day Tuesday, September 23, civil rights leaders hoped to increase AfricanAmerican youth voter turnout by citing the police shooting death of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Mo., a city where only 12 percent of registered voters turned out to vote in the last city council elections. Community organizers in New Orleans and Houston -- two cities with a long history of confrontations between African Americans and the police -- have mixed views on whether outrage over Ferguson will translate into voter participation. Ferguson may be a rallying call in New Orleans, but it won’t be the dominant theme for staff and volunteers as they worked voter registration tables around the city, said Erica Buher of VAYLA-New Orleans, a multi-ethnic community organization focused on youth em-

powerment. Big Easy youth are attuned and empathetic to Brown’s killing on August 9, but, according to Buher, “what happened in Ferguson happens frequently in New Orleans.” Young people have their own Michael Browns to focus on. Their names, Buher said, are virtually unknown outside the city. Buher remembers when the police officer -- convicted of shooting Ronald Madison on Danziger Bridge in Hurricane Katrina’s wake -- was freed after a court upheld his appeal in September of 2013. James Brissette, 17 years old, also died on the bridge from police gunfire. Henry Glover was killed in a separate Katrina incident. The police officer charged in his death was also acquitted on appeal last year in December. “The court’s reversal hit the

community hard,” Buher said of the Glover case. Just weeks ago, Armand Bennett, a 26-year-old African-American man, was shot twice in the head during a NOPD traffic stop by an officer who allegedly turned off her camera before the confrontation. The incident initially went unreported to the public by the police superintendent’s office. Buher said it reminds people all over again of the NOPD’s

like Covenant House and Liberty’s Kitchen, which offer services to the homeless and formerly incarcerated juveniles, respectively. “We work hard to reach that 18 to 24-year-old transitional age group because they’re such a critical age and they’re the hardest to reach,” explained Buher, adding that in Louisiana, “you can actually register to vote when you’re 16. A lot of that under-18 age group is pushing back on the concept that voting is the only way you can be civically engaged.” Y e t , in Houston, of Young Voters Christina Sanders, the director of the Texas League of Young Voters Education Fund, is convinced that Ferguson has been an “aha moment” for some of her city’s youth and a catalyst that may yield an increase in voter registration rolls. “This is a time when I’ve seen

You can build these small fires into a firestorm – Christina Sanders, Texas League lack of transparency. “We will work to register voters through National Voter Registration Day up until October 6 which is the last day for us,” said Buher. Some 23 sites include college and university campuses as well as organizations

more young people connect to the power of the ballot,” said Sanders. She attributes increased interest to social media. “Social media, like Facebook, and the ability to connect with people around the country who are saying the same thing, feeling the same way, that changes the conservation.” Sanders concurs with Buher that voter registration is not a panacea or silver bullet to foster change, but the Houston native sees voter registration as the gateway for young people to become more involved in determining how to define and address critical concerns within their communities. “Youth should not expect everything to happen overnight, because things didn’t get the way they are overnight,” Sanders said. “Voter registration isn’t sexy, but if you connect with young people about Ferguson and how it affects people’s lives on so many different levels, you have the capacity to build on the fire in people’s bellies. You can build these small fires into a firestorm.”

By Jazelle Hunt NNPA Washington Correspondent WASHINGTON – In July, bystander footage of an unidentified California highway patrol officer pummeling a Black woman on the side of the road hit the media. Last week, federal judge Mark Fuller was arrested for beating his wife, and subsequently accepted a plea deal for professional leave, six months of counseling, no charges, and an expunged record. And controversy continues after video surfaced of NFL Baltimore Ravens running back, Ray Rice, knocking his wife unconscious in an elevator last Valentine’s Day. The 2014 Miss America pageant stirred that pot last week when a judge asked a contestant about Janay Rice’s decision to remain in her marriage. On the 20th anniversary of the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA), it seems there is still work to be done. For this reason, Vice President Joe Biden, who co-sponsored the law in 1990 as a senator from Delaware, will convene legal scholars and professionals, and Department of Justice officials for a Summit on Civil Rights and Equal Protections

for Women. No date has been set. President Bill Clinton signed the bill into law on September 13, 1994. Summit participants will brainstorm solutions to end the gender bias in the justice system that affects the way cases are handled. They will also examine ways to allow survivors to sue their assailants in federal court – a VAWA provision the Supreme Court struck down in 2000. In addition to the summit, the Vice President’s Office released a state-of-affairs report on the issue of violence against women. “When VAWA was first passed, almost every state crime involving interstate elements (from gun crimes to cattle rustling) was covered by the federal criminal code – but not sexual assault and domestic violence,” the report reads. “Although there is still much to do, this anniversary gives us a moment to reflect on the vital, often life-saving work the Violence Against Women Act has inspired and supports. Since its passage 20 years ago, help has come on all fronts.” According to the report, there has been significant traction, both culturally and legally, on the issue.

6 | Sep. 25 - Oct. 1, 2014 | District Chronicles

The national rate of intimate partner violence against women has fallen 64 percent between 1993 and 2012, or 61 percent for Black Americans alone, according to the Bureau of Justice Statistics. VAWA-funded organizations have made gains in prosecution, and more services have become available for more survivors. Today, VAWA has been expanded to serve LGBT survivors, those living in Indian country, undocumented immigrants, and college students. In 2000, the definition of dating violence was added to the law. In 2005, health care organizations received VAWA funding to offer long-term mental and physical care for survivors. But there are still lingering issues. As Biden highlighted at a commemoration ceremony last week: “We have so much more to do, because there’s still sex bias that remains in the American criminal justice system in dealing with rape – stereotypes like ‘she deserved it,’ ‘she wore a short skirt’ still taint prosecutions for rape and domestic violence.” Additionally, against women and dating violence are problems

Violence Against Women law needs strengthening

Vice President Biden, who co-sponsored the Violence Against Women Act as a Senator in the 90s, takes center stage in a push to strengthen the law.

among youth; researchers have found that 1 in 10 teens will be harmed by someone they are dating, and 1 in 5 young women will be sexually assaulted during college. Until 2009, women age 18 to 24 have had the highest rates of being victimized by intimate partners -- currently, women age 25 to 34 have the highest rates. Biden and proponents believe that in light of uneven law enforcement and judicial response at the state and local level, VAWA should be allowed to grant the federal government jurisdiction to enforce the equal protection clause of the Fourteenth Amendment. Additionally,

other crimes involving interstate elements can be tried in federal court -- this is not true for sexual assault and intimate partner violence. “On the anniversary of this landmark legislation, we rededicate ourselves to strengthening the protections it first codified, and we reaffirm the basic human right to be free from violence and abuse,” President Obama wrote in a commemorative proclamation. “Too many women continue to live in fear in their own homes, too many victims still know the pain of abuse, and too many families have had to mourn the loss of their loved ones. It has to end -because even one is too many.”

Lawsuit seeks millions for victims of police abuse By Dr. J.A. Salaam Special to the NNPA from The Final Call ST. LOUIS – Sweltering heat didn’t keep more than 50 people from gathering at the Eisenhower Federal Building for a press conference where Atty. Malik Shabazz of Black Lawyers for Justice announced a class action lawsuit on behalf of the “Ferguson Five,” city residents and others who the attorney said were abused by police during protests and a law enforcement crackdown in Ferguson, Mo., after the shooting death of teenager Michael Brown by a White police officer. “We are here to deliver what we have promised. There have been many victims of rogue forces. There are people who have come forth and we call them the Ferguson Five. These are the first of many more that this case will represent,” said Shabazz late last month. Tracey White , Dwayne Matthews, Damon Coleman, Theophilus Green and Kerry White are like

others who were handled with brute force by Ferguson and St. Louis police during heated protests, said the lawyer. “We are here because the police are out of control and have used excessive force. We just want to say to Chief Thomas Jackson, justice will not sleep,” said Shabazz. The civil case is seeking $40 million in damages from Ferguson Police Chief Thomas Jackson, St. Louis Chief of Police Jon Belmar and a host of officers from Ferguson and the St. Louis police departments. “People of the jury, if you feel that the police of Ferguson and St. Louis County are unjust and have treated the people wrong, please raise your hands,” he said. With no hesitation all present raised their hands in agreement. “The $40 million in damages sought could go “higher; we intend on teaching them a painful economic lesson,” he said. “My son and I attended a peace and love rally sponsored by the AME church of Ferguson. After-

ward we walked to the McDonald’s to get something to drink and eat,” said plaintiff Tracey White. The mother and son were waiting August 13 for her husband to come pick them up. They purchased food and drink. Her son went to the bathroom. “While he was in there several police came in dressed like the army,” said Ms. White. “They ordered me and other customers to get out,” she said. She didn’t want to leave without her 17-year-old son, who she saw being accosted by police. When she expressed concern, officers threw her to the floor and handcuffed her, according to White. As her son looked on, she cried out to him to come get his I-Pad. When he attempted to get it, he was arrested, she continued. They were held for 5 hours and charged with “failure to disperse.” “We did nothing wrong,” she said. They weren’t released until midnight. Dwayne Matthews was going to his mother’s home in Ferguson to check on her. He rode the bus to

make sure she was safe amid unrest in the city. Matthews said he was confronted by eight officers dressed in military gear. He raised his hands but says he was shot multiple times with rubber bullets. Mr. Matthews said he fell down in water, had his head slammed on the concrete, and was held under water until he couldn’t breathe and felt like he was about to drown. Kerry White said police took his camera, removed the memory card, then threw his camera down on the

ground. The freelance photographer said he lost “images and shots I cannot replace.” “I’ve been on the front line, controlling the crowds and now I’m in the courtroom defending the people who have been dealing with this type of treatment. I’m a fighter for justice,” said Shabazz, whose group is called Black Lawyers for Justice. “You’re asking for peace, but peace is predicated on justice,” he said.

hat can you say about tragedy? When it’s imminent, you brace yourself and hope to come out unscathed. In its aftermath, you mourn and eventually move on....but you remain changed forever.. Still, what exactly can be said about tragedy? The book “In Remembrance of Emmett Till” by Darryl Mace will show you that you can say plenty, and the strongest words come from influential places. Mamie Till-Mobley was born in Mississippi, but when she was just two years old her family joined the Great Migration and settled in Chicago. They left a state where lynching was “an all-too-common experience for blacks” and segregation was a way of life. Things were different in Illinois; there was still racism, but it wasn’t likely that it would kill anyone. In this less-tumultuous place, Emmett Louis Till was born and raised and, due to his Chicago upbringing, “could not understand what it was like to be Black in Mississippi.” Still, as was the habit of many Midwestern African American families at that time, 14-yearold Emmett was sent to spend the summer with an uncle in the South. It was a tragic mistake. In the days following August 31, 1955, once Emmett Till’s body was pulled from the Tallahatchie River, publications – both mainstream and Black – leaped on the story toreport “yet another senseless murder of a Black male,” highlighting the indifference from Mississippi officials, lack of outrage from White Mississippians, and the ensuing trial at which the defendants were observed laughing. Interestingly, Mace says that mainstream midwestern news-

papers covered the story differently than papers in the West and Northeast. African American publications, particularly from the Midwest, also had understandably different angles. They were the ones to keep the story alive long after the trial ended. “At the time, Whites in the Deep South could not see that with his death Emmett Till sowed the seeds of change that would sprout forth into the modern civil rights movement. Regardless of race, Americans... and these members of the Emmett Till generation would change the very nature of race relations in the United States,” said Mace. Part of the problem I had with “In Remembrance of Emmett Till”is that this book is more academic than I expected. There were

times when I was riveted by the information Mace uncovered, while other pages made me want to just shelve it for a while. There’s a good sense of time and context here, and that helped. Mace fully equips readers to understand why Till’s violent death wasn’t just “another senseless murder,” why the U.S. was ripe for Civil Rights progress made in the decade after his slaying and how the press, especially sixty years ago, served its public. Scholars and historians may appreciate more from this book than recreational readers, but Mace’s thoroughness will get you through. After reading “In Remembrance of Emmett Till,” see what you have to say about tragedy.

astern Senior High School students and volunteers, in partnership with the American Heart Association Teaching Gardens program, have cultivated an impressive garden and hosted a Harvest Day last week to highlight their efforts to grow fresh vegetables, herbs, and flowers for their school and community. The teaching gardens program was created by the American Heart Association as part of an established garden program at Eastern Senior High School and funded by a $25,000 grant from CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield, the region’s largest health insurer. The goal of the program is to help lower childhood obesity rates by teaching children good eating habits that they also can share with their families. The garden program at Eastern, known as Mighty Greens, teaches students the principles of entrepreneurship and urban agriculture, sells seedlings to local school gardens and organizations, and operates a seasonal CSA. About one-third of children in the U.S. are overweight or obese, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. In a
