Editorial Race shaped the 2014 midterm elections By Benjamin F. Chavis, Jr. NNPA Columnist

s there any doubt about the prominence of the race factor that helped determine the outcome of the 2014 Midterm elections? I have no doubt. Why did Democrats seeking election and re-election to office run from the nation’s first Black president, the titular head of the Democratic Party? Why were millions of dollars in campaign contributions spent by Democrats in a manner that disproportionately avoided mobilizing the Black grassroots activists and the Black press? Ironically, the Republican Party paid more attention this year than in the past to attract BlackAmerican voters. Consequently, Blacks casting ballots for Republicans increased from 8 percent in 2012 to 10 percent in 2014, according to exit polls. The GOP results were historic: In South Carolina, Tim Scott became the first Black American to be elected to the U.S. Senate from the South since Reconstruction. Mia Love became the first BlackAmerican Republican woman to be elected to the House of Representatives and in Texas, Will Hurd became the first Black-American Republican to be elected to Congress in that state since Reconstruction. Even with those breakthroughs, Blacks remain loyal to President Obama. His favorability among Blacks is down 9 percentage points to 85 percent, still an impressive accomplishment.
Meanwhile, his favorability among Whites remains at 34 percent. Congress’ favorability is less than half of that. Black Americans are not monolithic when it comes to politics. There are Black Americans who are Democrats, Republicans and Independents. Unfortunately, there are still too many Black Americans who do not vote. The fact that more than 1 million eligible Black Americans did not care to vote in the last election is both a historical and sad contemporary contradiction. Voting for Black Americans is more than a right. It is a moral responsibility and cultural obligation given our long years of struggle and sacrifice to demand and achieve voting rights, freedom, justice and equality. With the American economy continuing to recover and unemployment slowly declining, President Obama led the United States out of one of its most difficult economic recessions in history. Obama’s global leadership is also holding steady in comparison to other world super powers. So why were the 2014 elections such a negative reaction against him? I believe that there is an antiBlack American sentiment that has infected our politics and our daily lives. To put it in a single terminology: racism was a determinative factor that caused the election results across the nation. Remember racism can be both conscious and unconscious power actions that result in a systematic negative impact on the quality of life of those who face institutionalized and

societal racial discrimination and oppression. The good news is 2016 is coming faster than most realize. It will be another crossroads for American politics and the stakes will be even higher. We all should be using the next two years to engage in and increase public awareness of the importance of political and economic empowerment. 2015 will mark the 20th anniversary of the Selma-to-Montgomery March and the passage of the 1965 Voting Rights Act. The U.S. Supreme Court has
already eroded some of the critically important enforcement sections of the Voting Rights Act. Thus, our collective vigilance will be required once again. We should work with the members of the Congressional Black Caucus and other progressives on Capitol Hill to ensure that the Voting Rights Act is fully restored by the new “right wing” Congress. In the wake of the disastrous elections, President Obama did not blink. He stepped right up and proceeded to nominate another “freedom fighter” to be the first
Black American woman to be the next Attorney General of the United States: the gifted, talented and courageous U.S. Attorney Loretta Lynch from New York City. Let’s see how the U.S. Senate will respond to Lynch’s nomination. She was confirmed twice before by the Senate and should be again. Voting rights, racial justice, equal education, environmental justice, healthcare and economic justice are just a few of the many issues that the new Attorney General will have to face. That’s further proof that voting matters.

F
ederal regulators have approved the sale of a FOX TV affiliate in Quad Cities, Iowa to longtime media executive Pluria Marshall, Jr., president and CEO of Houston-based Marshall Broadcasting Group (MBG), officials have announced. Marshall, also publisher of Wave Publications Group in Los Angeles, will acquire Fox affiliate KLJB in Quad Cities/Davenport, Iowa, officials said. Two other proposed acquisitions in Shreveport, La., and Odessa-Midland, Texas remaining pending, officials said. The license transfer from Nexstar Broadcasting to minorityowned Marshall Broadcasting is an important step in fulfilling Nexstar’s commitment to incubate broadcast station ownership by minority-owned companies, which is also a key FCC initiative, officials said. “The MBG transaction serves as a model to increase media ownership diversity while extending Nexstar’s long-term, well-documented initiatives to serve the public interests and needs of local viewers, hometown businesses, and organizations in the markets where we operate,” said Perry A. Sook, chairman, president and
Chief Executive Officer of Nexstar Broadcasting Group. As a result of this approval, Nexstar will lead the industry in incubating a new, minority-controlled entrant to broadcasting and bringing additional news, information and specialized programming to markets where MBG will operate. Sook said Marshall’s acquisition of the station complements Nexstar’s strategic focus on localism, including expanded local news, sports and other programming. “As an established and longtime media executive with extensive broadcast operating experience, Pluria Marshall has the background and skills necessary to serve local interests while maintaining independent operations and programming decisions for the stations,” Sook said. Marshall, president and CEO of MBG, said he is “delighted to secure the approval from the FCC and the support of Nexstar” as the two companies move forward in diversifying the ownership of media assets among minority operators. “This is a great day for Americans, minorities, MBG and Nexstar as equality of media asset ownership is as important as equality is in all facets of the country,” Marshall said. “We applaud the FCC for its
forward-thinking approach to providing appropriate guidelines and structure that enable new entrants to own, operate and program television stations.” Marshall said he looks forward to playing an active role in the new communities his station serves while “developing minority-oriented public affairs programming that will air on MBG stations and be syndicated to other television stations nationwide.” Earlier this year Nexstar and MBG entered into definitive agreements whereby MBG would, subject to FCC approvals, purchase three FOX affiliates, including KLJB, for $58.5 million. The other stations are KMSS in Shreveport, La. and KPEJ Odessa-Midland, Texas. The Louisiana and Texas acquisitions are pending. The three acquisitions have been endorsed by several media monitors and by members of the Congressional Black Caucus because they would significantly boost the number of black-owned TV stations in America, provide broader career options for blacks in television and create an opportunity for more diverse and increased local programming in broadcasting. Before today¹s approval, only three of the nation’s 1,300-plus fullpower commercial stations were Black-owned.

Norton’s bill is the House companion bill to Senator Maria Cantwell’s (D-WA) bill, S. 2884. Federal Communications Commission chair and one other commissioner have also indicated that they personally opposed the team name. Norton has urged the FCC to begin its own process to prevent on-air use of the team name, particularly considering the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office has also concluded that the name is derogatory. Last year, Norton was one of the nine original cosponsors of H.R. 1278, the NonDisparagement of Native American Persons or Peoples in Trademark Registration Act, which calls for the cancelation of existing trademark registrations containing the Washington football team’s name. Norton also joined several of her colleagues in sending a letter to NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, Red Skins sponsor FedEx, Red Skin owner Dan Snyder and the 31 other NFL franchises, urging them to support a changing the team’s name. Introducing the bill, Norton told the legislators the National Football League is a not-for-profit
business league with tax-exempt status. But the NFL is the nation’s largest sports franchise, generating almost $10 billion a year. “Unlike some of its counterparts – the National Basketball Association and Major League Baseball, for example – it operates as a nonprofit, which allows for its profits to trickle down to its 32 teams, including the Washington football team,” she said. Norton noted that more than 300 Native American tribes, two million Native Americans, and religious and human rights organizations have called on NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell and Red Skin owner Daniel Snyder to change the name of the Washington football team because the name and mascot insult native people.
year’s conference is “Human Rights in Health.” The conference will be webcast live atwww.whocanyoutell. org. “Stigma robs individuals of their basic human rights and is the major reason the HIV epidemic continues,” said Dr. Sohail Rana, conference director and professor of pediatrics at Howard University College of Medicine. “We are all responsible for this stigma, and we must work together to eliminate it. When we play the game of fear, blame and shame we all lose.” In addition to researchers, the conference will showcase the work of human rights activists and artists who are fighting against stigma. These community leaders include Maria Meja, Latino HIV positive writer and activist; Gee Session Smalls, co-founder of www.JuanandGee.com; Mary Bowman, Wash-
ington HIV/AIDS activist, musician and poet who has been HIV+ since birth; Justin Terry Smith, HIV+ activist and blogger of justinbsmith. com. For healthcare clinicians, the conference offers a maximum of 6.33 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits. The award-winning Howard artists of “Afro Blue” will entertain participants. “This conference has been very successful in bringing together diverse speakers that use various methods in educating attendees about stigma, its impact and ways to address it, said Lisa Fager, a conference organizer and project director with the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation, Inc. “This is our fifth year and we look forward to the continued growth and partnerships as we strive to make a difference.”

Catholic bishops back Obama on immigration reform battle

LASTING RELIEF from
BACK PAIN
Bishop Elizondo has openly backed White House administrative action on immigration reform.
By David Gibson Religion News Service BALTIMORE – The nation’s Catholic bishops are jumping into the increasingly contentious battle over immigration reform by backing President Obama’s pledge to act on his own to fix what one bishop called “this broken and immoral systemâ€? before Republicans assume control of Capitol Hill in January. In an unscheduled address last week at the hierarchy’s annual meeting, Seattle Auxiliary Bishop Eusebio Elizondo, chairman of the migration committee of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, said the USCCB would continue to work with both parties to pass comprehensive immigration reform. But, Elizondo said, given the urgency of the immigration crisis and the electoral gains by Republicans who have thwarted earlier reform efforts, “it would be derelict not to support administrative actions ‌ which would provide immigrants and their families legal protection.â€? “We are not guided by the latest headlines but by the human tragedies that we see every day in our parishes and programs, where families are torn apart by enforce-
ment actions especially, he said. During the summer, the president was moving toward unilateral action on immigration, despite warnings that such moves could exceed his constitutional authority or would turn voters against reform. Then, in early September, Obama said he would delay acting on his own, a move that was seen a way to protect vulnerable Democrats from any backlash in midterm elections. On Sunday, Obama told CBS’ “Face the Nation that he was now “going to do what I can do through executive action. “It’s not going to be everything that needs to get done. And it will take time to put that in place, he said. Republican leaders in Congress responded by warning they will kill any immigration reform if Obama acts unilaterally. An immigration reform measure passed the Senate with the support of the bishops and the White House, but was blocked in the Republicancontrolled House. Elizondo acknowledged that Republicans “might block any kind of initiative that the president might be taking but said something had to be done. Elizondo was not the only
bishop to speak out on the issue this week. Bishop Gerald Kicanas of Tucson, Arizona, a leader in the USCCB and a vocal champion of immigration reform, told Catholic news site Crux that “it may be necessary for the president to step up and to act on his own. Louisville Archbishop Joseph Kurtz, the president of the bishops’ conference, also made a point of telling the bishops – and the press covering the meeting – that he plans to meet with Obama and leaders of both parties in coming months in hopes of pushing immigration reform to the top of the agenda. Last week’s public lobbying by the bishops on immigration reform followed criticism by some commentators that the U.S. hierarchy was not following the new course set by Pope Francis, who has put such social justice concerns at the forefront of the church’s agenda. It also marks a rare expression of support for the president from the bishops, who have battled the White House over gay marriage and the contraception mandate that was part of Obama’s 2010 health care overhaul. Many bishops had privately urged the USCCB to take a more vocal role on issues beyond gay marriage and abortion.

Black leaders brace in Ferguson, appeal for peace By Hazel Trice Edney
Change, hopes that regardless of the jury’s decision, peace will prevail. The key, she said, is for the residents to focus on long term change rather than momentary rage and shortterm reaction – regardless of the jury’s decision. “You’ve got to have your mind set on a goal. If everybody is stuck on justice coming in the form that they want it because they’re angry and enraged, then they haven’t allowed themselves to look at a broader picture beyond this moment,” King said. “People think nonviolence is just a physical thing. It’s really a whole approach to life.” King led a team of 10 nonviolence educators from the King Center for several meetings and workshops in Ferguson over the past several months. The team included retired St. Louis Police Department captain, Charles Alphin Sr. and the Rev. Willie M. Bolden, a former staffer of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference who worked with Dr. Martin Luther King in the 1960s. She said the King Center will continue to work with the National Urban League among other groups. They aim to establish jobs and address some of the dire socio-economic needs in Ferguson, what she described as the “great economic divide.”
The King Center
(TriceEdneyWire.com) – Bernice King, the youngest daughter of Civil Rights icon Martin Luther King Jr., said this week that despite efforts of nonviolence trainers, she has deep concerns about what could happen once a grand jury decision in the police killing of Michael Brown is announced. Ms. King has led several nonviolence workshops in Ferguson, Mo., “We have done our best to say to especially the young people that it’s very important that you remember the commitment that you made here today to nonviolence,” said King who has led sveral nonviolene workshops in Ferguson, Mo. “And that you not get pulled into anything because once the feds get involved, it goes to a whole other level. It’s probably going to be less ‘destroying of another Black man’s life’ through a bullet, but it’s going to be the ruining of his life. Because once you get federal charges on you, they’re hard to shake.” Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon has declared a state of emergency and activated the National Guard as America awaits the decision of the grand jury on whether White police officer Darren Wilson will be charged in the Aug. 9 shooting death of the
unarmed Black teenager. Nixon said he is not expecting violence, but the National Guard would assist state and local police if there is civil unrest. Violent behavior by citizens and police that resulted in arrests and fires initially after the shooting is the reason citizens and police in Ferguson are tense. Citizens say the overly aggressive, militarized response by police could cause clashes with peaceful protestors, especially since there has been no protest violence in the streets of Ferguson over the past 90 days – only peaceful protests. This is the reason NAACP President Cornell William Brooks opposes Nixon’s decision to declare a state of emergency. “A state of emergency without evidence of violence or danger only threatens to stir up tensions and denigrate the peaceful efforts of countless non-violent activists,” Brooks said in a statement this week. “We at the NAACP will work tirelessly to ensure that the civil rights of the demonstrators are upheld. And finally, we commend and stand with those practitioners of democracy who have stood strong for over 100 days.” King, in her role as chief executive officer of The Martin Luther King Jr. Center for Nonviolent Social
Dr. Bernice King comforts a young woman during nonviolence training in Ferguson, Mo.
The Rev. Jesse Jackson Sr. agrees. “There’s a military plan for violence, but not an economic plan for fairness, jobs and contracts,” he said this week. “There’s a military plan but not an education plan or justice plan. And they’re planning to crack down with federal government subsidized equipment.” Jackson says the people must realize that the violence against them does not come with a bullet alone. “The segregation is violence; the unequal access to police and fire jobs is violence,” Jackson said. “The disproportionate arrest of Blacks is violence. One of the practical reasons that people should not engage in violence is because violence be-
comes the subject. And the subject is really injustice, inequality and racial injustice.” Police forces around the country are bracing for the jury’s decision which could be announced any day now. That’s because similar violence against unarmed Black men has become epidemic nationwide. “Ferguson is just a metaphor for neglect in urban America,” Jackson said. “There’s a Ferguson in every town. We shouldn’t be waiting on the grand jury decision. We should be dealing with issues of fundamental injustice. If he’s indicted, we’ve gotten the mailman, but missed the post office. The protests must lead to national legislation and plans.”
Democrats midterm strategy didn’t match Republicans By Wellington E. Webb 8NNPA Guest Columnist Now that the dust has settled after our nation’s 2014 elections, here is my two cents worth on what has happened during the last couple of years, and what it means now. First and foremost, congratulations to the National Republican Committee. They had a 50-state plan, and they implemented their plan with dogmatic discipline and with little or no deviation by candidates, or state strategists’ preferences. During the election, I was in four different states and heard the same theme uttered from Republican candidate to Republican candidate in all four of them: “This Democratic candidate ‘X’ voted 99 percent of the time with Obama. This Democratic candidate ‘Y’ voted with Obama 92 percent of the time.” This theme resonated in every state that I visited. It was clear that
this strategy was initiated at the highest levels of the Republican Party and was expected to be carried out in every race in the country where there was a Republican candidate who had served in an elected position and there was an opportunity to line up on the “Republican side” of issues or on the “Obama side” of issues in the forefront of the American people. In my home state of Colorado, I was afraid that we Democrats were going to lose the U.S. Senate race, the governor’s race, and the majority hold to both chambers of the Colorado legislature. My having served on the most recent Colorado Reapportionment Commission in 2010, where we crafted the districts based upon access to a fair process for candidates from each predominant party, I thought that the House and the Senate of Colorado were competitive but with a positive edge of advantage to Democrats in that Democrats had been at a disadvan-

tage up to 2010. However, given the lack of passion for the principles for which many Democratic elected officials coupled with victories on other issues over the past six years, two days before the 2014 Midterm Election, I was fearful that we were going to lose it all in Colorado. Our Democratic base did not vote its winning capacity, and the Republican ground game was also better than ours. Of the political consultants the Democratic Party had hired very few, if any, minority consultants were contracted to fill in their blind spots on data mining for voters. This same unsuccessful strategy model was applied on Amendment 66 in Colorado as well. Unfortunately, we Democrats had little to no respect for, and therefore almost invisible identification with, the accomplishments of President Obama, who had accumulated a litany of successes. We, as Democrats, should have been proud
of and owned up to our record of sterling accomplishments from 2008 to 2014: Gasoline prices are down, unemployment is down, health care accessibility is available to all, and, we even justifiably assassinated Osama Bin Laden. Not once, did we mention one Democratic success. This omission was the most shameful outcome of this 2014 election. We ran away from our successes – and Republicans fought against them, even though our efforts improved the lives of Americans. We should have been talking about everything from increasing the minimum wage across the nation, to fighting to protect Medicare and Social Security and providing a national security plan to protect America. But we didn’t. Shame on us Democrats for not amplifying our improvements to the country. Elections are cyclical, and if we don’t have a message that resonates at the national level, the state level, and to the legislative level, we
Democrats, will be a minority party and our nation’s minorities will be shoved back into the shadows of not mattering once again. The Democratic Party’s national leaders are going to have to broaden their consultant base to include younger pundits and more minorities into their think tanks for successful elections in the future. Lastly, mail ballots work better for higher-income level voters than for middle and lower level income voters. As columnist George Will once asked, “In our democracy, is it too much to ask for voters to go to the polls to vote in person?” I think not. Wellington Webb served as mayor of Denver from 1991-2003. He is the only mayor in U.S. who has served as president of the U.S. Conference of Mayors, president of the National Conference of Black Mayors, and president of the National Conference of Democratic Mayors.
Politics Feds creating wrongful convictions unit By Jazelle Hunt Washington Correspondent
“Of the approximately 250 people exonerated for adult sexual assault, a majority are African American, over 60 percent. That’s way higher than their rate of imprisonment [for sexual assault],” said Gross. “Among those exonerated, the African Americans are primarily Black men convicted of raping White victims. And their exonerations are based on misidentifications … because cross-racial identification is notoriously more difficult. This is especially true of White people.” For 80 percent of Black men wrongfully convicted of sexual assault, mistaken witness identification was one the factors that led to exoneration. And these cases take longer to review and overturn. In the last decade, several conviction integrity units have sprung up in state and district attorneys’ offices across the country, beginning with Dallas County in 2007. There are also several universities and organizations dedicated to assisting the wrongly convicted through DNA testing, such as the National Innocence Project or The Exoneration Initiative in New York. But this unit in Washington is unique. “The U.S. Attorney’s Office for D.C. handles local crime in D.C. as well as federal crimes. In other places, all sorts of things can be in
ovc.ncjrs.gov
WASHINGTON (NNPA) – U.S. Attorneys across the nation are professional prosecutors, making sure criminals are locked up for their crimes. Beginning this fall, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia will take on a new and very different role as it turns its attention to those convicted of crimes they did not commit. It will be the first time any of the nation’s 93 presidentially-appointed federal prosecutors has taken up this cause. The Convictions Integrity Unit will re-evaluate violent felony cases in which defendants can supply sufficient, new evidence that warrants a reconsideration of the conviction, especially DNA or biological evidence that can prove innocence. “Although wrongful convictions remain a rare phenomenon, their consequences are tragic – for the defendants involved, for the victims of the crimes that remain unsolved, and for the community we work every day to protect,” said U.S. Attorney Ronald C. Machen Jr. in a statement. “As prosecutors, our goal is not to win convictions, but to do justice.” The National Registry of Exonerations, a joint project between
the University of Michigan Law School and the Center on Wrongful Convictions at Northwestern University School of Law, compiles information on all known exonerations since 1989, with convictions beginning in the late 1950s. Florida, California, Illinois, New York, and Texas have the highest rates of wrongful convictions, and according to the registry, 1,467 people – 46 percent of them Black – have been exonerated since 1989. This year alone, 81 people have been cleared; (49 of them are African American). On average, these men and women are imprisoned for at least a decade before their convictions are overturned and their records expunged. “There’s nothing to suggest that the rate of false convictions is slowing down, at all,” said Samuel Gross, law professor at the University of Michigan, and editor and cofounder of the National Registry of Exonerations. Together, murder and sexual assault convictions account for 60 percent of the registry’s exonerations. The high rate of homicide in Black communities is reflected in both conviction and exoneration rates; but in the case of the Black men who have been wrongfully convicted of sexual assault, a discrepancy emerges.
U.S. attorney Machen Jr. backs the move saying it’s the prosecutor’s goal to do justice.
local court but almost none of these are federal crimes, except in D.C.,” said Gross. “Also, because it’s a federal office, there are more resources they have command of…so they’re capable of doing a more thorough job. [This Office] has more influence than U.S. Attorney’s Offices anywhere else.” The U.S. Attorney’s Office for Washington first turned its attention to possible wrongful convictions following the discovery of
faulty testing and mismanagement within an FBI forensic lab that occurred during the 1980s and 1990s. Over four years, the Office sifted through thousands of FBI case files, reviewing Washington cases involving hair or fiber evidence processed by the FBI between 1980 and 2000. Five men were exonerated as a result of this initial investigation. Each had already served approximately 30 years in prison.
Time for Blacks to switch from politics to economics By George E. Curry NNPA Columnist
T
he Midterm Elections are over, the final numbers are in and they don’t look pretty if you’re a progressive. So, I am going to propose something our national African-American leaders should have suggested a long time ago: It’s time for us to switch. No, not to the Republican Party; that would be tantamount to drinking Jim Jones Kool-Aid (young people, Google “Guyana Massacre”). It’s time to switch our emphasis from politics to economics. I remember Al Sharpton, speaking at the 2004 Democratic convention, saying Blacks had decided to ride the (Democratic) donkey as far as it would take us. Well, Al, that donkey has taken us
as far as we can go in politics, even into 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. Now, it’s time topark that old, tired pack animal on a farm and try a new mode of transportation. Even when we have given it our best, politics have never delivered the expected results. I am old enough to remember how exuberant we were with the election of the first wave of Black big city mayors: Carl Stokes in Cleveland, Richard Hatcher in Gary, Indiana, Ken Gibson in Newark and later, Tom Bradley in Los Angeles, Andrew Young in Atlanta and David Dinkins in New York. We saw Doug Wilder elected governor of Virginia, the cradle of the confederacy. The outgoing governor of Massachusetts is another African American, Deval Patrick. In January, we will have not one, but two Blacks in the U.S. Senate (Cory
Booker and Tim Scott), the largest African-American contingent ever in the upper chamber. And the Congressional Black Caucus (CBC), which bills itself as the conscience of Congress, has behaved as though it was unconscious the last six years, too afraid to even critique President Obama for fear of facing a backlash back in their home districts. Rep. Emanuel Cleaver of Missouri, stated: “Well, I’m supposed to say he [Obama] doesn’t get a pass, but I’m not going to say that. Look, as the chair of the Black Caucus I’ve got to tell you, we are always hesitant to criticize the president. With 14 percent [Black] unemployment, if we had a White president we’d be marching around the White House.” The undisputable truth is that Obama needed pressure from

Blacks and progressives to make him a better president. When he offered his version of Ronald Reagan’s trickle down economic theory – if you take care of America as a whole, it will trickle down to what Jesse Jackson calls boats stuck at the bottom. How has that worked out for Black America? And instead of being grateful for the silence of the lambs, Obama has an inexplicable need to criticize his supporters even more than his opponents. Rep. Joe Wilson (RS.C.) can shout “you lie” during a State of the Union speech, and icecool Obama could essentially ignore the public slight. But appearing at a 2011 CBC dinner, the president urged his audience to “take off your bedroom slippers, put on your marching shoes. Shake it off. Stop complaining, stop grumbling, stop crying. We are going to press
on. We’ve got work to do.” While there have been some meager improvements since the economic meltdown Obama inherited, Blacks still face staggering unemployment and severe income and wealth inequality. Blacks are on the verge of spending $1.3 trillion a year, according to a Nielsen’s study. It’s time to shift our attention to economic development and empowerment. I am not saying we should abandon politics – we shouldn’t – but it should no longer be our primary focus. Let’s get off of that donkey. George E. I
t’s been said that you should never talk religion or politics with someone you have met. So what about electioneers? Have you ever wondered what motivates those people to hand out flyers at the voting polls in a lastminute effort to convince voters to vote for their candidate? If you are me, you walked out of your dorm, with no classes, and hopped in a car with three strange women who agreed to give you $50 in exchange for you handing out their “literature” outside the polls. They take you around the corner, to a neighborhood you have never seen, hand you a pile of papers, arrange a few signs outside the poll, exchange numbers, place you as close as possible to the legal electioneering boundary and promise to be back soon. Nearly 10 minutes into my shift, another electioneer approached me and said, “I hate, hate, hate your candidate. She always hires college students who aren’t from here and can’t even vote here to work for her,” he replied.
When I explained to him that I was from Connecticut, and was not voting, it was understood that I was precisely one of the students he was talking about. Before then, I figured that the others must have had similar motivations to mine for being there. I thought maybe they, too, had been offered small incentives for their time and support, but the longer I stood among the crowd of people passing out flyers and badgering seemingly uninterested voters with their campaign rhetoric, and the more I began to speak with them, I learned many of them had very personal and long-time connections to the campaigns they worked for. Alongside positive comments about their own candidates, many of the representatives recited electoral history, discontent with certain candidates and hope for change in their communities. Two of the women that I stood alongside were mothers of candidates running for the same Advisory Neighborhood Council position, one coming from New York and the other Virginia. They had both stood and enthusiastically promoted their sons, and planned to do so until polls closed. Other
supporters stood as friends of candidates on the ballot and others are concerned civilians. So, how could my civic participation become so superficial? According to a study by the Pew Center, non-voters are more likely to be non-White, younger than 30, and to have a family income of less than $30,000. This would be the first election in which I was legally old enough to vote, yet I had not participated at any meaningful level. Those people at the polls, handing out flyers, voting, working the polls, were making an investment in their community. Down to the most local position on the ballot, campaign representatives reached out to the limited number of voters walking into Garrison Elementary School out of genuine concern for the future of their community. I realized that no matter how mobile the world has gotten, how busy I felt, or how poorly I felt candidates had reached me, I had a responsibility to educate myself because on this night, whether I agree with the policies of the elected officials or not, I did nothing to support them or prevent them from entering into office.

County will run it’s annual Thanksgiving parade a week before the holiday.
Montgomery County County Thanksgiving Parade set for Saturday, November 22
O
n Saturday, the holiday season will be heralded in by a new 12-foot inflatable turkey leading the Montgomery County Thanksgiving Parade. Beginning at 10am, the 17th Annual Thanksgiving Parade will step off from Ellsworth Drive and Fenton Street in Silver Spring and proceed south on Georgia Avenue, ending at Silver Spring Avenue. The line-up of over 100 parade units will feature the inflatable turkey, which is the Montgomery County parade logo, a 12-foot inflatable Silver Spring penguin, a teddy bear toy float, and more drum lines and colorful dancing groups than revelers have ever seen before.
ABC 7 Meteorologist Brian Van de Graaff and NewsChannel 9 anchor Kellye Lynn, will serve as the emcees, introducing glittering floats; a wide variety of high school, college, and professional marching bands, beauty queens, clowns, fire engines, performing dogs and rescue animal groups. As always, the parade will end with Santa’s float playing holiday music and featuring the bearded and rosy-cheeked man in the red suit. Parade organizers are looking for volunteers to be elves and pilgrims on floats, reindeer and penguins in the parade, or to lead balloons. Those interested, ages 13 and older, will suit up in costume and ride on the floats. Organizers are also looking for volunteers to act as unit leaders, and to be inflatable and balloon handlers. The hours for volunteers will be from 7:30am to 1:30pm on Saturday. Volunteers are to meet at the
Silver Spring Civic Building at One Veterans Place at Ellsworth Drive and Fenton Street. For those driving to the parade, the northbound lanes of Georgia Avenue, from East-West Highway to Colesville Road will close at 7 a.m. and re-open after the conclusion of the parade around 1 p.m. Free parking will be available in the public garages, including the Sligo Avenue Garage and the Bonifant Street Garage next to the Metro. The Ellsworth Town Center garage will be closed that day. Parade goers are encouraged to take Metro’s red line to the Silver Spring station, just west of Georgia Avenue, across from the Discovery building. The Town Center public parking garage at Ellsworth Drive will close at 2 a.m. Saturday morning to accommodate the parade. Broadcasting live on News Channel 8, the parade will re-air several times on Thanksgiving Day.
