Contents
This is a place for Buddhist mediation, thinking and contemplation. The building is located on the reservoirs. The design started from the connection between the building and nature. A place with power of perception where water, Buddha and human coexist is thus created.
The value First, visitors and pilgrims can meet and gather information about Buddhism and its history here. And second, Through the Buddhism and meditation, help the criminal who imprisoned in Shek Pik Prison to relax and the redemption of their soul. Also, the good inmates can face the normal people in the common area, even be a staff that they will not feel uncomfortable after their prison term. And third, the high-level master of a hermit and spiritual cultivator can live in a floating house on the reservoir. When the Cultivators annals services and talks coming soon, they can floating back to the main building to hold the event with visitors and pilgrims.

This site analysis covers Ngong Ping, Luk Wu & Shek Pik which have a couple of distinctive qualities: the great virtue and the great guilty. The analysis looks at the two very contrasting perspectives and the relationship between the two. The propose site/project building will stand at the boundary between Ngong Ping, Luk Wu & Shek Pik, physically and conceptually.

Lantau Island, in the southwest of Hong Kong, is an important center of Buddhism, renowned for the Big Buddha statue. The new Shrine was created to serve three separate groups of people.

Luk Wu - The great virtue
In contrast, Luk Wu still maintains its natural landscape, the special religious and tranquil character which complements the overall naturalness and the landscape beauty of the surroundings. As shown on the map, Luk Wu located on the east of Tai O and to the southwest of Ngong Ping, Ngong Ping and Luk Wu are where the major Buddhist sites located Lantau Island. The individual cultivator is the main inhabitants, they will hold the discipline daily such as meditation and chanting within the full daily activity because it is a practice pattern of lifestyle. From the long time ago. Luk Wu old trail was the spiritual cultivator's circulation. And it is the local people practice from a place to another place to attend the formation of some of the path, it is people traveling, transport and life of the transport network. The route from Tai O to Luk Wu, to Ngong Ping, Tung Tong, and finally to Tung Chung. The old trail built in 1940, by the cultivator, monks and hermit. The stone way along the path from the paved, and now part of the trail has been paved by concrete road. It can observed benefits of chanting at a medical, psychological, and spiritual level. Although it is not so prosperous before, but still exist. Since the developer try to intrusion, there are monasteries were converted into columbarium acquisition, massive construction of the destruction original natural environment and the tranquil atmosphere.
Ngong Ping - The great freedom Ngong Ping is a highland in the western part of Lantau Island, located on the Muk Yue Sha. There are numerous temples and gardens for spiritual retreats and meditation. Looking at the history, by the end of the 19th century, many Buddhist monks and nuns from China moved to Hong Kong due to political instability in the mainland. Since then the peaceful and tranquil Lantau Island has emerged as an important site for spirituality. During its development, Ngong Ping has transformed itself into a tourist spot. The Big Buddha statue, Wisdom Path and Po Lin Monastery are the major landmarks, attracting numerous local and overseas Buddhists and visitors. People who have no religious believes or backgrounds will also go visit because it is a famous attraction.
Actually, temples and quiet rooms are used to practice Buddhism to teach people to face and solve the problems of life, old age, illness, and death, not to place the ashes of the deceased.
On the Big Buddha statue’s back, following the slope of the hill and river estuary to the Shek Pik reservoir, is a catchment area. The reservoir intercepts and gathers the gully water flowing from the neighboring mountain ridges on its three sides, with a storage capacity of 24.461 million cubic meters. It has a total 1,034,494 m2 site area. In the 1950s, there is the water shortage in Hong Kong. To relieve the problem the Hong Kong Government decided to build a reservoir in Shek Pik Heung valley and to further develop Shek Pik be a peripheral site. Put the Offensive facilities such as prison, correctional, special need school. Prior to construction of the reservoir, there were four villages, Shek Pik Tai Tseun, Fan Pui Tsuen ( 墳 背村 ), Kong Pui Tsuen ( 崗貝村 ) and Hang Tsai Tseun ( 坑 仔村 ), in the valley. The residents were all relocated as part of the reservoir construction. Shek Pik situated at the valley bottom, it faces the sea and front of the reservoir with hills at the back. The main programs are the prison and correctional institution in the area. Shek Pik Prison is a highsecurity prison. Those prisoners are 12 years term or above and there can accept 426 prisoners. In addition, Sha Tsui Correctional Institution is the low-security prison. Those prisoners are 5 years term or below and there can accept 121 prisoners.

The visitor take the Cable car from the Ngong Ping to the Visitor point. That can look the whole reservoir. Then walk along the water edge and watch the quiet lake and the green grass so that all those who are looking at the place of mind are all caught in the philosophy of life meditation. Zen is hidden in the ordinary life of everyone can meditate in life.

For the cultivator, the darkness tunnel is a chance to face the death, and think about it. It is about the Buddha philosophy 'Life and death cycle'. Thought the lighting of the exit to rebirth. The Dense tree covers the cultivator to be slow-moving. The season change will be discovered on the leaf color. They get the driving force of the journey of life.

For the inmates, space and light have a great impact on their minds. They walk the tunnel around 5 mins, this kind of small and dark space showing a sense of silence. In the progress, having a lighting tower to take a break with a warm lighting the filter of water shadow to entry the main building.
