INTRO Overview
Vietnam’s tourism had flourished in 2017 with 13 million international visitors to Vietnam, bringing about $25 billion to the national budget. Since 2017, the government has highlighted tourism as a key economic sector, setting a target of 16 million foreign tourists for 2018, which for some seems very challenging. Leisure & Travel (LT) has had an interview with Chairman of Vietnam Association of Tourism, Mr. Nguyen Huu Tho about the issue. What do you think about the achievements of tourism in 2017?
The number of international visitors in 2017 had increased by 30% compared to 2016, thanks to many years of development, especially in the construction of new hotel and resort facilities including Asia’s leading hotel, InterContinental Danang Sun Peninsula Resort. Additionally, many large-scale investment resorts from Vingroup, Sungroup, CEO Group, FLC, etc. have excited the beach tourism sector. The growth in tourism has been beneficial to the industry’s participants from taxi drivers and souvenir owners to investors and developers of tourism facilities.
What are the reasons behind this impressive growth?

The 08-NQ/TW Resolution has played a crucial role in inspiring the leaders of every province and city to focus more on tourism as a key economic sector.
What needs to be done to develop tourism in the future?
There are 4 problems we need to solve: Firstly, the competitiveness in the tourism sector is not equal to other countries in the region and in the world. We lack professionalism compared to other nations like Thailand or Singapore. Secondly, we need to improve
the lack of connection between different tourism sectors. Vietnam is endowed with diversity in nature, landscape and climate. How to bring tourists from big cities to explore the unique provinces nearby, such as Mekong Delta, North West area, etc.? Beach tourism is seasonal, while eco-tourism is promising for the Highland, North West and the Mekong Delta areas. Thirdly, the lack of necessary tools has limited us to promote ourselves effectively as a tourism destination. We should provide useful and practical information such as climate, temperature, currency exchange rates, banking service, medical care, food, culture, etc. Finally, we lack proper human resources for the tourism industry. According to the General Department of Vocational Training, trained workers currently accounts for only 38% to 40% of the tourism industry. To improve the quality, this number must be at least 60% to 70%. Staff that speak a foreign language are concentrated in only the 4-5 star hotels. Most of them speak only English while we are receiving more Chinese, Korean and Japanese visitors.
How to increase the rate of return tourists?
The rate of return has increased, but not as highly as expected. However, there are many things we can do such as centering on seabased recreation and golf tourism. Hospitality developers should focus on differentiating identities and unique values to bring tourists more excitement. Most returning guests are still for sea travel. In addition, we need to promote eco-tourism, cultural tourism and culinary tourism in the Central Highlands and Northwest regions. We also need to focus more on shopping seasons since that’s when people tend to go travelling. To attract business travelers, MICE (Meeting, Incentive, Conference, and Event) tourism must be expanded. We must have large capacity hubs in key business destinations that can accommodate from 1,000 to 3,000 people ● July.2018 Leisure & Travel 11

베트남 관광산업의 성장 비결 2017년 베트남의 관광산업은 1300 만의 해외 관광객, 그리고 250억 달러 상당의 수입을 가져오면서 가장 번성했던 한 해였다. 2017년 이후로 정부는 관광산업을 경제분야의 핵심으로 강조해오고 있지만, 2018년의 1600만 해외관광객 유치라는 목적은 달성하기 어려워 보인다. Leisure&Travel은 베트남 관광협회 회장인 Mr. Nguyen Hutu Tho 와 이 문제에 대하여 인터뷰를 진행했다.

✒ 관광산업의 2017년도 성과에 대하여 어떻게 생각하는가.?
랫동안 공들였던 개발 프로젝트들이 하나 둘씩 완성되면서 그 성과가 눈에 보이기 시작한 것 같다. 특히 아시아의 선두 호텔 그룹인 인터콘티넨탈의 다낭 썬 페니슐라 리조트를 포함한 새로운 호텔들의 완공 그리고 새로운 여가 시설들 덕분에 2017 년 해외 관광객의 수가 전년에 비해 30% 가 증가할 수 있었다. 게다가, vingroup, sungroup, ceo group, FLC 등의 대규모 투자가 이루어진 리조트들이 해변 관광 분야를 활성화 시켰다. 택시 운전사, 기념품가게 주인, 관광시설 투자자와 개발자 등에 이르기까지 다양한 사람들이 그 이득을 나누고 있다.
✒ 이 엄청난 성장의 이면에 있는 이유는 무엇인가?
08-NQ/TW 결의안은 모든 주와 시 지도자들이 베트남의 주요 경제 분야인 관광 산업에 좀 더 집중하도록 고무시키는 데 중요한 역할을 했다.
✒ 관광 산업의 미래를 더 멀리 본다면, 지금 무엇을 해야 할까?
우리가 풀어야할 4가지 문제가 있다. 첫째로, 관광이라는 분야 안에서의 우리의 경쟁력은 동일 권역의 나라들, 그리고 세계의 각국들과 견줄 수가 없는 수준이다. 베트남은 태국이나 싱가폴과 같은 국가들에 비해 전문성이 너무 부족하다. 12 Leisure & Travel July.2018
둘째로, 각 여행 지역을 연결하는 수단이 부족하다. 베트남은 축복받은 자연과 풍경 그리고 기후의 다양성이 여행자로 하여금 매력 요소로 부각된다. 하지만 어떻게 해야 대도시의 관광객들을 메콩델타, 고원지대, 북서부 지역과 같은 특별한 장소로 유도할 수 있을까. 해변 물놀이는 계절의 영향을 받지만, 이런 지역의 관광은 계절의 영향을 받지 않기 때문에 우리는 이 점에 대해 더욱 깊이 생각해 봐야 한다. 세번째로, 여행객에게 필수인 것들의 부족이다. 기후, 온도, 환율, 은행서비스, 의료, 음식, 문화 등과 같은 실용적인 것들이 뒷밤침 되어 있어야 관광객 유치를 위한 홍보도 가능하다. 마지막으로, 인적자원이 부족하다. 직업훈련부의 발표에 의하면, 현재 관광업 종사자의 38~40%만이 관련 훈련을 받은 사람이라고 한다. 관광 산업의 발전을 위해서는 이 수치를 60~70%까지 끌어올려야 한다. 외국어를 구사할 줄 아는 인력은 4-5 성급 호텔에만 집중되고 있다. 그마저도 영어만 가능한데, 실제로 베트남 관광객의 대부분은 중국인, 한국인, 일본인이다.
✒ 어떻게 하면 재방문율을 높일 수 있을까?
재방문율도 높아지고는 있는 추세이나, 예상했던 만큼은 아니다. 해양스포츠나 골프 관광 같은 상품을 더 개발해야 한다. 휴양이 목적인 관광객에게는 더 많은 흥미거리를 줘야하기 때문에 고유의 가치와 정체성을 확립하는데 초점을 맞춰야 한다. 재방문 손님의 대부분은 아직도 바다 여행을 하고 있다. 고산지대, 북서부 지역의 생태관광, 문화관광, 음식관광을 활성화 시켜야 한다. 쇼핑 여행객, 비즈니스 여행객 특화도 필요한데, 특히 비즈니스 여행객 증가를 위해서는 MICE (Meeting, Incentive, Conference, and Event, 회의, 전시, 회담, 행사) 사업을 집중 성장시켜야 한다. 1,000~3,000명 수용 가능한 큰 규모의 비즈니스 센터가 필요하다. 즉, 우리는 재방문하는 관광객도, 새로 방문하는 관광객도 모두 필요하다 ●

Chìa khóa cho sự phát triển du lịch Việt Nam Du lịch Việt Nam đã có một sự bùng nổ vào năm 2017 với 13 triệu lượt khách quốc tế. đóng góp 25 tỉ USD vào ngân sách quốc gia. Năm 20178, du lịch đã được chọn là ngành mũi nhọn kinh tế với mục tiêu đón 16 triệu khách quốc tế. Đây là một con số khá thử thách. Cùng Leisure & Travel trò chuyện với ông Nguyễn Hữu Thọ, Chủ tịch Hiệp hội Du lịch Việt Nam về những thử thách trong ngành du lịch hiện nay.
Ông nghĩ sao về những thành nhiên như Đồng bằng sông Cửu Long, Tây Bắc…? Du lịch biển chỉ trọng tâm trong các tựu du lịch trong năm 2017? Lượng khách quốc tế 2017 tăng 30% so với năm 2016, chủ yếu dựa vào sự phát triển của các hệ thống khách sạn, nghỉ dưỡng quốc tế, trong đó phải kể đến khách sạn tốt nhất Châu Á, InterContinental Danang Sun Peninsula Resort, cùng các dự án đến từ các tập đoàn lớn như Vingroup, Sungroup, CEO Group, FLC… tăng lượng du lịch biển. Sự tăng trưởng này mang đến những lợi ích trực tiếp đến các cá nhân tham gia từ tài xế, chủ hàng lưu niện nay các nhà đầu tư.
Lý do dẫn đến sự tăng trưởng này là gì? Nghị định 08-NQ/TW đã làm thay đổi quan điểm của các nhà lãnh đạo tỉnh và thành phố trong việc tập trung vào du lịch như một ngành mũi nhọn.
Những việc phải làm để tiếp tục phát triển du lịch trong tương lai? Có 4 khó khăn chúng ta cần giải quyết: Sự thiếu chuyên nghiệp trong ngành du lịch khiến Việt Nam luôn đi sau trong cuộc đua với các quốc gia du lịch nổi tiếng như Singapore hoặc Thái Lan. Thiếu sự liên kết, nhất quán trong các lĩnh vực du lịch. Việt Nam được ban cho một hệ sinh thái, tự nhiên trù phú, Làm cách nào để “kéo” khách du lịch từ các thành phố lớn đến khám phá những làng văn hóa, khu tự
tháng hè, trong khi du lịch sinh thái là một thị trường tiềm năng với vùng cao, khu vực Tây Bắc, Đồng bằng sông Cửu Long,… Chúng ta thiếu các phương tiện để quảng bá những thông tin hữu ích đến khách du lịch quốc tế như thời tiết, nhiệt độ hệ thống ngân hàng, tỉ giá, đô ăn, văn hóa… Ngành du lịch Việt Nam đang thiếu lao động có trình độ, chỉ chiếm 40% trên tổng số nhân lực. Con số này nên được tăng lên 70% trong tương lai. Phân lớn lao động biết tiếng Anh tập trung ở các khách sạn, nghỉ dưỡng 4-5 sao trong khi chúng ta đang đón một lượng lớn khách du lịch đến từ Hàn Quốc, Trung Quốc và Nhật Bản.
Làm thế nào để khiến khách du lịch quay lại với Việt Nam? Số lượng khách du lịch quay lại Việt Nam đã có chuyển biến nhưng không rõ rệt. Để làm được điều này, chúng ta cần cải tạo du lịch golf và du lịch biển. Các khách sạn, resort nên tập trung vào điểm mạnh của mình và luôn luôn tự cải tạo để luôn mang đến những trải nghiệm mới mẻ. Phần lớn lượng khách quay lại thuộc nhóm du lịch biển. Chúng ta cần tập trung những dịch vụ du lịch sinh thái và văn hóa tại vùng núi Tây Bắc và Trung Nguyên. Bên cạnh đó, cũng cần tập trung vào mùa mua sắm khi nhu cầu du lịch tăng cao. Để trở thành điểm tổ chức các hội nghị, sự kiện lớn, các mô hình MICE cần được thực hiện với các điểm có sức chứa từ 1,000 đến 3,000 người ● July.2018 Leisure & Travel 13

Co To island in the northern province of Quang Ninh has attracted many visitors due to its untouched beauty and perfect conditions for sea and island tourism, offering many stunning and large beaches, white sands and wavy water. Recently, the district approved a master plan for the socio-economic development of Co To by 2020, aiming to make the island district a national-level eco-tourism and resort area together with the high-end sea and island eco-tourism area of Van Don. This will add Co To to a key destination regional tour: Cat Ba - Ha Long - Van Don - Co To - Mong Cai - Tra Co with diverse tourism products, including sports and entertainment centers ●
A workshop to enhance a tourist exchange between Vietnam and Japan has been co-organized by the Vietnam National Administration of Tourism (VNAT) and the Embassy of Japan in Vietnam, marking the 45th anniversary of bilateral diplomatic ties. SBHPQ belongs to Melia Hotels International, which is new in Asia and the only one in Vietnam. With 20 years of knowledge in the Hospitality Industry and over 8-year experience in Asia, I strongly believe it will be to my advantage to expand the Melia group’s business growing further.

ntroduced this month, are a selection of new three- and five-day packages designed to provide a restorative holiday on Vietnam’s Southern coastline. Resident yogi Umesh hosts private 60-minute yoga sessions daily for the packages at several locations around the property - including a vast oceanfront lawn, a yoga room, and an ocean view deck. The calming three-day program includes their 60-minute ‘Sri Mara Arising’ signature massage, 30-minute green tea body scrub, 30-minute Balinese Boreh body wrap and 60-minute facial. The Balinese Boreh body wrap is based on a centuries-old healing concoction comprising handcrushed ingredients such as ginger, cloves, turmeric root and cardamom to boost blood circulation and ease muscle pain and arthritis. The five-day slimming and detoxifying program includes a 60-minute coffee, orange body scrub and mud body wrap, three 60-minute detox and slimming massages using classic lymphatic massage
techniques to stimulate blood flow and reduce water retention and inflammation in areas such as the stomach, buttocks and arms, as well as a 60-minute facial. “We seek opportunities not to just relax on the beach but to heal and re-energize physically and mentally as our lives grow all the more hectic and stressful,” said the resort’s Owner and Chairman Pham Van Hien. The 500 year history n the beginning of the 16th century, a stream of people moving from Thanh Hoa had brought their potterymaking expertise to the lower-central region of Vietnam. They first settled in Thanh Chiem village and then relocated to the village of Thanh Ha. After 500 years, the tradition of making pottery has remained and became the embodiment of local culture. The most flourishing era of the porcelain industry was in the 17th and 18th centuries, when Hoi An became the major trading port of South East Asia. During that time, Thanh Ha potteries were considered “national treasures” under the Nguyen dynasty. A piece of clay, in the hands of porcelain artisans, could transform into 48 Leisure & Travel July.2018
practical household equipment such as cooking pots, vases, etc., which were carried all around world. Thanh Ha also supplied roof tiles and construction bricks to surrounding areas and even foreign nations like China and Japan. Surviving through many ups and downs, Thanh Ha porcelainmaking has been recognized as a “World Cultural Heritage”, turning this particular village into an interesting travel destination for locals and international visitors. Today there are 8 potter’s kilns, providing jobs to about 35 people. There are 74 households manufacturing bricks and tiles, employing 455 individuals, concentrated mostly within the village districts 3, 4, 5, and 6.
The fascinating facts about Thanh Ha pottery Until today, Thanh Ha artisans still apply the traditional techniques and procedures: handcrafting on a manual wheel, without any molds, coatings or chemicals. Even a thermometer is not necessary. By listening to the sounds of the flame, feeling the heat and counting time, the experienced craftsmen know when the baking is finished. This interesting fact has distinguished Thanh Ha from other pottery villages, as this is not solely a tourism destination but also a living museum where original customs are still practiced. How do you compare this to your first event in the Middle Eastern desert in 1993?
Yeah, there are many similarities. My first event in the Middle East - Dubai was in 1993. If you told me in 1993 what I would be looking at now in 2018, I would say you’re crazy. I have seen what people can do here in the Middle East. There have been many developments in infrastructure, roads and power systems. I expect there will be a lot of changes in this region in the future.
How did you enjoy your first time in Saudi Arabia?
This is my first time to Saudi Arabia and was really excited to get the call to come here. I’ve heard of King Abdullah Economic City through the years, and was keen to come and see what they have done. This is obviously the inaugural opening of the golf course here at Royal Greens. The golf course is really nice, they have a great facility here. I am glad I came.

What do you think of the 16th and other signature holes?
The holes are designed with great balance throughout the course - right to left and left to right - but the real treat is the wonderful 16th hole on the Red Sea. It gives the feeling of being on a Caribbean island due to the water colors and contrast. Though it is a par-3, the 16th is a pretty difficult hole. You don’t see too many holes where you contend with a prevailing breeze off the sea requiring the golfer to start their ball over the water. I thought the hole was a great addition to the course. The back nine is really picturesque, as is the whole golf course.
Experiencing a lot of excellent championship golf courses around the world, how do you feel this will stack up against other European Tour venues next year?
I think this will be one of the best in the Middle East. Having played throughout the Middle East from Dubai to Qatar to Abu Dhabi (except for Oman), I pretty much like this course. The greens can be quite tricky as the wind picks up in the afternoon. It is a fun golf course, I think golfers will be able to make some birdies. Wonderful golf course!
How do you think the weather will impact play, given that the wind often picks up here in the afternoon?
All of the Middle East is like this. I think Qatar is the only one where you really get different conditions. But the weather in Dubai and Abu Dhabi is similar to the weather in Saudi Arabia. The wind picks up in the afternoon with
a nice sea breeze. The mornings offer your best scoring opportunity while in the afternoon you have to hang on.
How important is it for Saudi Arabia to embrace the sport and help it to grow? This event will not only be great for the European Tour but also for the global golf industry. We need places where we can grow the game, where we
can start at the grass roots level and introduce the game to new golfers. Saudi Arabia is absolutely an untouched destination. By bringing world class players here, to Royal Greens in Saudi Arabia, we expect it to be a game-changer. By developing schools, housing facilities, and hotels here, it’s going to be an unbelievable city to have golf as the main sport. By introducing golf to a new
The national team will have access to these facilities as part of the agreement between Royal Greens and the Saudi Arabian Golf Federation. How important is it for young talents to access a facility like this?
I’ve always said that we’re a small country in South Africa but we’ve had good golfers for many years. With good facilities and weather, we were ahead of the game, unlike Europe where golf courses are open for only 4-6 months a year. As a three-time winner of the Dubai Desert Classic and holding the course record there, can you share the specialties of playing golf in the Middle East? July.2018 Leisure & Travel 61
GOLF interview talent. Do you think the game is in good hands with this young generation?
Absolutely, I think that the situation has just flipped over. It seems like our generation has been around for about 20 years. There was a transition generation of Sergio Garcia and Adam Scott, etc.; but they were still in the Tiger era. Tiger was such a dominating player, and during that 20-year period there wasn’t much significant changeover. Now I can see about 10 young guys who are about to dominate the game. It seems like they are having a lot of fun. However, it seems like they’re good friends, which I don’t quite agree with as it reduces the competitive nature of their game. Nonetheless, they are a talented group of players who are taking over and winning major championships. That group is going to bring the game forward and I love watching them play. It’s just a great place. Normally we play in January, February, or March. Where else in the world are you going to find the weather like this? Remember that the Middle East has golf courses in great condition and wonderful weather. I loved playing here and I would love to come back - I’m getting a little older now, I’ll be 49 years old this year. (Smile).
What are your strategies to “conquer” the Carnoustie and Shinnecock Hills courses?
The Shinnecock Hills course in June can be as blustery as here, with weather conditions that can change rapidly. Long Island is 80 miles from New York City, so you’re basically in middle of the ocean, which is suitable for a link-style of course. With the USGA, they set the course at the hardest difficulty for any Major. Therefore, you have to prepare mentally and physically along with a bit of luck. How about the Carnoustie course?
Carnoustie is the toughest course on the Open rota. If the weather gets tough, as in 1999, winning with a score above par could easily happen. The Carnoustie course has everything you need in a Major Championship venue - length, strategic bunkering, weather, a great history, and a list of great champions.
Growing up as a kid in South Africa, were you on the practice green imagining you’re at The Open thinking ‘this putt is for the Claret Jug’?
The Open has always been my favourite, mainly because there is virtually no time change change between Great Britain and South Africa, so you could actually sit on your couch and watch it live
during the day. I remember the times when Tom Watson was dominating, Seve’s win in ’88, and that wonderful win of Lytham and so many other wonderful champions. I grew up in Johannesburg, which is very parklandish and the links were different. Because of this, I was very comfortable and always loved playing on links courses. In 2012, at the 4-day Open event, my good friend Adam Scott had a terrible finish, giving me an opening to win the tournament and Claret Jug. As the golf fairy exists, Adam was redeemed and won the Masters in the very next year. I actually celebrated more for Adam’s Masters win than he did himself. Hard work is rewarded with a bit of luck and good fortune.

Is there anyone in particular that you want to pick out?
Obviously, Justin Thomas! Last year was a huge turning point in his career by winning the FedEx Cup, shooting 59 at the Sony Open, winning a Major, and about other 4-5 tournaments. Also, Jordan Spieth, by winning his 3rd and 4th Major became the world’s Number 1 player at the age of 24. Then, we have Rickie Fowler, Jon Rahm, Rory McIlroy and Patrick Reed. A wonderful, wonderful group of players!
You mentioned Tiger earlier, how impressed have you got watching him playing?
I’m happy to see joy in Tiger’s eyes again after the back injuries that he suffered with for such a long time. He can now swing like he has always wanted to. I believe he will win more Majors. He is talented and he just needs to find the right venue to achieve it. Tiger is 42 which is a
magic age to start winning Majors again. Ben Hogan, Mark O’Meara, Phil Mickelson, Darren Clarke, Ray Floyd, and I won a Majors when we were 42, Payne Stewart was 41. If we can do it, Tiger can do it too. I’m looking forward to some good golf!
We’re looking forward to a marquee, a landmark, President’s Cup with you and Tiger as captains. Given both of your profiles, do you think that will bring an added element to the Presidents Cup? I don’t know. I have always enjoyed the President’s Cup, and competed in it. I need to make some changes in the run up to the Cup. I already have four picks going into the week. After the adjustments, I want to generate a blueprint for the next generation of captains. It’s a very important task for me and the team to be competitive and win this President’s Cup in Australia, which is a great venue for us. But Tiger’s got an unbelievable team and he’s been an exceptional player. The two of us have a bit of history in past President’s Cup competitions, and I think we will bring an extra element to the matches and hopefully make it really exciting.
Going back to you wanting to switch things up, do you think you have a formula for success or a strategy?
I think it’ll be very similar. I know how match play works and I won the world match play 7 times -- my record in the President’s Cup is not terrible. However, aside from my experience, I want to bring some other things. We have a very diverse team with nationalities all over the world. I want to make sure all my guys feel comfortable, the way they want to be and not the way I force them to be. I want to let them chill during the week; then we implement the new strategy, hopefully winning the tournament. Though I’ve got a lot of experience at this competition venue, there are still a lot of inputs I want to give the guys, and hopefully we can take it in.
Besides the Presidents Cup and the business there, what else have you got coming up on and off the course?
I have been travelling quite a bit. I was in Japan a couple of weeks ago, I’m in Saudi Arabia now but I still want to play. I feel physically a lot better than I have in the last 18 months or so. Obviously, the Open Championship will be a focus and we will see where it goes from there. I want to try being more competitive and take my game onto the Champions tour! ●
Yeah, I have something in my mind, and I want the guys to buy into it. Luckily, we have a lot of time before the event at the end of next year in Melbourne. So, I’m working with the guys, focusing on the switches I want to implement, and we will see how it goes. But I feel like there will be some big changes and hopefully they will work to help us win the President’s Cup.

"The Mannequin’s Life” collection of artist Nguyen Khac Chinh has impressed art-lovers through its unique presentation and social perspective. According to Chinh, the role of the artist is to reflect social reality. In this collection he depicts an indifferent and insensitive society, where humans associate with each other solely for personal benefit. This is nothing more than a “mannequin world”. Through the lens of Nguyen Khac Chinh, the mannequins become lively and delicate, rich and expressive, as if the artist wishes to touch the inner beauty of each individual and bring people together. Thế giới Mannequin Bộ sưu tập “Cuộc sống Mannequin” của họa sĩ Nguyễn Khắc Chinh đã gây ấn tượng mạnh cho người xem và đã mang lại dấu ấn quan trọng trong chính cuộc đời sáng tác của anh. Theo họa sĩ, vai trò của người nghệ sĩ là phản ánh hiện thực xã hội. Một xã hội loài người lạnh lùng vô cảm, đến với nhau hời hợt, chỉ vì lợi ích cá nhân thì xã hội đó không khác gì thế giới Mannequin. Tuy nhiên, dưới lăng kính của người nghệ sĩ, thế giới manequin trở nên sống động và vô cùng tinh tế, phong phú và biểu cảm, như ước mong của người họa sĩ nhìn thấy vẻ đẹp bên trong của mỗi con người. Những thiếu nữ trong trang phục áo dài trong tranh của anh, tuy khuôn mặt lạnh lùng không biểu cảm nhưng ẩn chứa đằng sau là những tâm hồn tinh tế, đời sống nội tâm hướng về cái đẹp. At four or five years old, I had always painted things around me and copied the illustrations from textbooks. With a dream of becoming an architect/artist, I decided to attend Hanoi Fine Art University, where they equipped me with knowledge, aesthetic permeability and technical training. After graduation, it took me awhile to figure the individuality for my paintings.
Is it difficult for a young artist to find his own path?
I’m still on the way to finding myself in this extremely severe arts environment. I’ve exerted all my strength to strive, learn and listen to myself in order to follow a correct path. Fine arts is a special job, though it has been an arduous but interesting journey. Artists create beautiful and meaningful pieces based on their philosophy and feelings.
How do you find your inspiration?
My inspirations come from everything in society, from natural beauty to daily life in the contemporary era. Above all, the human’s day-to-day interaction and communications have become a recurrent topic in my paintings. My paintings are not just a portrait of reality, but also a manifestation of personal narratives. Philosophical thoughts, movies, books, etc. also nurture creativity.
Who has an influence on you?
I was influenced by the famous artists like Leonardo Da Vinci, Rembrandt, Klimt, Schiele, Lucian Freud, Vermeer, etc. They are the Masters of setting trends and creating masterpieces using superior techniques to express a
sense of individuality. Their works have given me the aspiration to building my own style.
How would you define yourself as an artist?
I paint everything in my own way through my own perspective, not for anything or anyone else. I prioritize the sense of originality. My paintings are an amalgamation of symbolism, minimalism and surrealism. They reflect reality but do not copy reality. In other words, I symbolize reality by filtering out and picking up its essence. It’s art. Painting plays an integral part of my life through which I can freely express myself.
What did bring you to the idea of painting mannequin?
I paint everything in my own way through my own perspective, not for anything or anyone else. I prioritize the sense of originality. My paintings are an amalgamation of symbolism, minimalism and surrealism.
Through my paintings, I want to express my feelings, my thoughts and pieces of my soul onto the canvas with a variety of topics from natural landscapes to portraits, from people and their daily activities to refined ideas and vague feelings, etc.
Which part of society does an artist take place?
I think the role of the artist in society is to discover beauty and blend it with personal feelings and emotions to guide the audience in perceiving life from a different perspective.
How do the collectors find you?
People know me through my exhibitions in Vietnam and overseas. Some people know me via the internet and some people even travel to meet and buy my paintings here in Vietnam. I have had a great time with many of them; and they become my friends after the first meet.
What painting do you like most?
I love all my paintings because they are different parts of my whole self.

I have nurtured the idea and finished this collection over a long period time. In the paintings, the colors and layouts resolutely show my ambition, desire and thoughts while the figures do not represent any specific characters. However, if you look thoroughly enough, you will see those figures and shapes are very familiar in real life. The female characters in my paintings are traditionally portrayed in Ao dai - the signature dress of Vietnam, but placed in a contemporary art space. The loneliness and insensitivity of human beings nowadays has become more vivid in the modern age. People feel lonely even in their own home. I had to find the appropriate moods and tones to express this state of feelings. Faintness and isolation are emotions I want to convey in this collection.

What does painting mean to you?
Painting has brought me the senses of happiness, freedom and life understanding, which are depicted in my paintings. As a professional artist, I am very happy of what I am doing. When painting, I drown myself in my own imagination and inspiration. Sometimes the process of art making is really smooth, while at other times it is nothing but a total mess. Some paintings take me 30 days to finish but in the end I realized I had followed a wrong direction. At that very frustrating moment, my creativity kicks in to create a magnificent artwork. In order to pursue long-lasting painting, I first have to generate an emotional bond with the topic, experience the beauty and embrace it.
How would your life change if you were no longer allowed to create art? About artist Nguyen Khac Chinh:

How to help young artists to develop?
Art is hard work. There are some forms of art that are almost non-commercial and require a lot of investment. Often young artists need funding to develop and discover their talent.

-5살때쯤에 항상 주변에 보이는 것들을 그림으로 그렸고 교과서의 삽화들을 베끼는 것이 재밌었다. 건축가의 꿈을 가지고 하노이 미술대학교에 진학해 통찰력을 키우고 미술적 기술을 키워낼 수 있었던 것 같다. 졸업 후 내 그림의 개성을 알아내는 데 꽤 오랜 시간이 걸렸다.
✒ 젊은 예술가가 자신만의 길을 걷는다는 것은 역시 어렵던가?
이 혹독한 환경에서 나는 여전히 나를 찾는 중이라면 답이 될는지. 나는 올바른 나의 길을 가기 위해 끊임없이 배우고 노력하면서 나를 단련시켰다. 참 고되었던 시간들이지만 재미있었다. 예술가들은 자신만의 철학과 감정선을 바탕으로 아름답고 의미 있는 작품들을 만들어 내는 중이다.

사회, 자연, 일상생활 등 주변 모든 것에서부터 영감을 얻는다. 무엇보다도 사람들 사이에서 매일 매일 일어나는 대화, 행동들은 최근 내 그림의 주요 주제가 되기도 했다. 내 그림들은 단순한 현실의 초상화가 아니라 그저 지극히 개인적인 이야기의 표현이다. 철학적 사고, 영화, 책 등도 창의력에 도움을 주는 것 같다.
✒ 주로 영향을 받은 예술가는?
레오나르도 다 빈치, 렘브란트, 클림트, 에곤 실레, 루시앙 프로이트, 베르메르 등 유명한 예술가들의 영향을 받았다. 그들의 작품은 나만의 스타일을 나도 가져보고 싶은 열망을 주었다.
✒ 스스로 어떤 예술가라고 정의 내리고 싶은가?
나는 다른 누군가 또는 어떤
무언가를 위해서가 아닌, 내 나름대로의 관점으로 그림을 그린다. 나는 보통 독창성을 우선시 하는데, 내 그림은 상징주의, 초현실주의 그리고 미니멀리즘의 혼합이다. 그들은 현실을 반영하지만 현실을 모방하지는 않는다. 바꿔 말하면, 나는 그 본질 외의 것을 걸러내고, 핵심만 선택함으로써 현실을 상징화 한다. 그림으로 내 삶의 전체를 표현하고 그것을 통해 나는 나 자신을 자유롭게 표현한다.
베트남과 각국에서 열리는 전시회가 주로 통로가 된다. 내 그림을 구입하기 위해 베트남을 방문하는 사람도 있었다. 팬들과 만나 좋은 시간을 보내며 친구가 되기도 한다.
✒ 마네킹 작품은 어디서 아이디어를 얻게 됐는지?
독서, 쿵푸, 여행.
정말 오랫동안 이 작품을 실현시키기 위해 생각에 생각을 거듭했다. 그림에서 색과 배치가 나의 야망, 소망 등을 확실하게 보여주는 반면 인물들은 특징이 없다. 하지만 자세히 들여다 본다면 조금 다르게 느끼게 될 지도 모른다. 그림 속 여성들은 전통옷인 아오자이를 입고 있지만 현대 공간에 놓여져 있다. 현대사회의 인간은 집에서도 외로움을 느낄 정도로, 인간의 고독과 무감각이라는 특징은 현대에서 두드러지고 있다. 나는 이러한 인간의 고독한 감정들을 표현하고 싶었다.
✒ 당신의 작품을 통해 사람들이 느꼈으면 하는 부분은?
자연 풍광부터 초상화에 이르기까지 나는 그림을 통해 사람들의 일상 생활과 막연한 감정들을 담고 싶다. 그것이 바로 내 생각과 감정들을 표현하는 것이라고 생각한다.
✒ 예술가의 사회 내에서의 역할은 무엇일까?
예술가는 이 세상의 아름다움을 발견해내는 통찰력이 중요하다. 그 아름다움을 개인적인 감정과 잘 섞어 사람들이 본인이 지니고 있던 관점과 다른 측면에서 세상을 바라볼 수 있도록 인도하는 안내자의 역할이라고 생각한다.
✒ 관객들은 어떻게 당신의 작품을 알고 찾아오는가?
✒ 본인의 작품 중 어떤 그림을 가장 좋아하는지?
각자 다른 특징을 가지고 있기 때문에 나는 내 모든 그림을 사랑한다.
✒ 그림 이외의 또다른 관심사가 있다면? ✒ 당신에게 그림이 주는 의미는?
그림은 나에게 행복, 자유, 그리고 삶에 대한 이해를 가져다 주었다. 전문 예술인으로서 나는 내가 하고 있는 일에 굉장히 만족하고 행복하다. 작품을 만드는 것은 정말 순조로울 때가 있는가 하면 완전 엉망일 때도 있다. 30일이나 공을 들여 그린 그림을 완성할 때쯤에 내가 잘못된 방향으로 가고 있다는 것을 깨달았다. 그 좌절스러운 순간을 창의력으로 극복했던 경험이 있다. 오래 지속되는 그림을 그리기 위해서 주제와 경험의 유대감이 가장 중요한 것이란 걸 깨달았다.
✒ 만약 당신이 더 이상 작품 활동을 하지 못한다면 당신의 인생은 어떻게 될 것 같은가?
솔직히 모르겠다. 다른 사람이 될 것 같다.
✒ 젊은 예술가들을 성장시키기 위해 어떤 도움을 주고 있는가?
예술은 고되다. 몇몇 종류의 예술은 거의 비영리적이면서 많은 투자를 필요로 한다. 젊은 예술가들을 발굴하기 위해 아마 자금이 가장 필요한 부분이지 않을까 생각한다.
✒ 다음 프로젝트는 무엇인가?
내 작품을 모으는 수집가로부터 몇 가지 작품 수주를 받았다. 또 2019년 단독 전시회를 준비중이다 ●

처음 베트남을 여행하기 전부터 저는 베트남에 대한 칭찬을 참 많이 들었습니다. 숨막히는 아름다운 풍경과 정갈한 음식들, 흥미로운 전통 축제, 풍요로운 문화유산 그리고 친절한 사람들까지…
I have studied in Japan and U.K. in different majors. Art however, has always been in my blood. Admiring the beautiful hats worn by celebrities and women in formal parties had given me the passion.
그래서 정말 많은 기대를 가지고 베트남을 방문했고 그 첫인상은 아직도 잊을 수 없습니다. 베트남 북쪽은 잘 모르지만 남쪽은 평화로운 분위기가 너무 맘에 듭니다. 이런 분위기는 처음 느껴보지만, 이젠 이 곳이 고향처럼 느껴져요. 베트남에서 찾은 가장 소중한 보물은 베트남사람들이에요. 어딜가나 환하게 반겨주는 사람들의 친절함이 너무 좋아요. 그게 바로 지금까지 제가 여기서 살았던 이유입니다.
✒ 외국에서 산다는 것이 힘들지는 않나요?
Why did you choose to live in Vietnam?
Before my first trip to Vietnam, I heard many compliments about this beautiful country, from breathtaking landscapes, exquisite cuisines, traditional festivals, and its rich heritage culture to its friendly people, etc. So, I decided to make a visit, and with lot of excitement I fell in love at the first sight! I was deeply impressed by what I saw and the locals I met. I didn’t know much about the North but I really like the peacefulness in Southern Vietnam. I haven’t 88 Leisure & Travel July.2018
experienced anything like this in my entire life. I call this land home! The most precious treasure of Vietnam comes right from its people. It doesn’t matter where you go, you are always welcomed by the smiles and kindness from friendly locals and even from strangers. That is why I have been living here until now.
Is it difficult for you to live in a foreign country? I feel quite comfortable here and nothing has been difficult for me up to
now. Before I came here, I had lived in some other countries, so I adjusted quickly. I love the warm weather, though I am challenged by the insects. Insect bites are unpleasant to me! (Smile)
How can you make such a beautiful sushi shop?
I wanted to make a shop of my own Chaya unique from other Japanese restaurants by embedding our rich heritage into the atmosphere. I then decorated the restaurant with kimonos, old Japanese masks,
pictures of beautiful Geishas along with beautiful flowers. Visitors will feel like they’re entering a time machine back to the 1900s. It took me a long time to finish the interior with the help of some talented Vietnamese people introduced by friends.
What has inspired you to become a hat maker? I have studied in Japan and U.K. in different majors. Art however, has always been in my blood. Admiring the beautiful hats worn by celebrities
and women in formal parties had given me the passion. I once lived in Newmarket, nearby Cambridge. This had inspired me a lot to make this kind of hat.
Who are your customers?
I receive orders from many countries including Japan and European countries. My customers really like my hats and even introduce to their friends. My hats are for multiple occasions from formal to casual wear including wedding parties, horse races and sporting events. I often
take tailor-made orders for funerals, celebrities on TV, and red-carpet events, etc. My hats are a fit for everyone.
What is your future plan?
I hope to develop some “artsy” cafes and restaurants in Vietnam in the near future. Besides profit, I love the work of creativity.
What do you tell people who want to visit Vietnam?
Vietnam is the best place to live with a tropical climate, delicious fruits, fresh vegetables and much more ●
지금까지 여기서의 삶이 그리 썩 힘들었던 것은 없었어요. 호치민에서 살기전에 다른 나라에서 살아봤기 때문에 호치민의 장점을 빨리 알아챌 수 있었던 것 같아요. 따뜻한 날씨는 좋은데 아, 벌레때문에 좀 힘들기는 하네요. 벌레에 물릴때가 힘들었어요.
✒ 가게가 스시 식당처럼 너무 감각적입니다. 어떻게 꾸몄나요?
나만의 특별한 가게를 만들고 싶었어요. 일본 특유의 전통 소품을 이용해 일본 식당처럼 독특한 분위기를 나타내려고 애썼습니다. 기모노, 전통 가면, 아름다운 게이샤의 사진 등을 꽃과 함께 장식했어요. 손님들은 아마 가게 안으로 들어서면 1900년대 일본으로 타임머신을 타고 온 듯 느껴질거예요. 이렇게 가게 꾸미는데에 엄청 긴
시간이 걸렸지만 예술적 감각이 있는 베트남 친구들의 도움도 정말 많이 받았죠.
✒ 모자 디자이너가 될 때에는 어떤 계기가 있었나요?
사실 제가 영국에서 대학을 졸업할 때에는 관련된 전공을 했던 것은 아니었어요. 그러나 예술적 열망이 언제나 제 피 속에 흘렀죠. 공식적인 파티에서 셀럽들이나 아름다운 여성들이 모자를 쓴 모습을 넋놓고 바라보는 저를 느낄 때마다 제 안에 있는 열망도 느껴졌어요. 런던에서 살 때 근처에 새로운 시장이 하나 있었는데 그 쪽이 경마장으로 유명한 곳이라 독특한 모자를 많이 팔았었어요. 그 영향때문에 지금과 같은 모자들을 만들게 되었습니다.
✒ 그럼 주로 어떤 고객들이 이 모자를 찾나요?
일본과 유럽을 비롯한 다양한 나라에서 주문을 해 주시는데요. 제 고객들은 제 모자를 너무나 사랑해주셔서 주변에 소개도 많이 해주십니다. 제 모자는 어느 상황에서나 잘 어울린다는 것이 특징이에요. 격식있는 자리부터 캐주얼한 자리에서도, 결혼식이나 경마장 심지어 스포츠 행사 장소에서도 어울려요. 장례식이나 연예인들의 TV 쇼 또는 레드카펫 행사 등 특별한 날을 위한 주문제작도 종종 들어옵니다. 제 모자는 누구에게나 어울립니다.
✒ 앞으로의 계획은요?
예술적인 요소가 가미된 카페나 레스토랑을 운영하고 싶어요. 이익은 생각하지 않고 창의성에만 중점을 두고 싶습니다.

the foliage 2 "Foliage 2" is an exhibition marking the one-year anniversary of Vincom Center for Contemporary Art (VCCA)’s opening, held from June 8th to July 15th, 2018. It aims to continue VCCA's mission in supporting, connecting and diffusing art in general, contemporary art in particular. The exhibition honors 34 works by 10 young artists in various artistic languages including painting, sculpture, video, and installation. The excellent "Nam Nhi" Music Show has brought a new perspective to Quan Họ folk. Because of this, Ngo Hong Quang should be nominated as a "modern folk music artist". This young artist

During the show, the traditional Quan Ho melodies were creatively mixed with beat-box beats performed by artist Trung Bao. At a very young age, Trung Bao was the only Vietnamese representative of this genre and became the Champion of the World Beat-box Camp 2017 solo tournament. He was also in the Top 4 of the Grand Beat-box Battle 2017. "Nam Nhi" Music Show was a spontaneous collaboration between young artists, who represents the "strength and will of a real man" ●

Exclusively for the event, TOTEMISM and Multiply collaborated on a special version of Multiply’s multipurpose urban blanket, which can be used in 263 different ways. Visitors also enjoyed
the community assemblage art piece made by Multiply’s tree-inspired coat rack. TOTEMISM is a non-seasonal fashion label founded by Hungarian designer Rita Trömböczky and her boyfriend Johnny H. Nguyen in 2017. Living a nomadic urban life between Budapest, Hanoi, and Los Angeles, Rita designs clothing, jewelry, and accessories inspired by all of the diverse sights, sounds, textures, and feelings she experiences around the world. The distinctive heritage and landscapes of Hungary, Vietnam, and California, influence the label’s aesthetic and serve as the palette for their collections. Multiply is a Hanoi-based design firm founded by Swiss architect Nicolas Moser.
