When it comes to choices, Boston has a plethora of activities to choose from. The underwater attractions around Boston have many similarities to the land attractions. You have tons of choices and unless you live in the Boston area, I recommend you call in sick for a few months to try and explore all the dive sites. By Mike Hughes
MIDWEST DIVES
20 Chicago-Dive Into Adventure in the Windy City
The windy city, land of the skyscraper and home of Chicago style pizza, playground of the famous Cubs and diving mecca…wait… diving mecca? Really? Well…yes, yes it is. While being famous for all of those other things, divers know this is also the place to come if you want to have a great all-around diving experience, which means, lake, quarry, wreck…you name it, Chicago has a place to dive it.
TROPICAL DESTINATIONS
24 Cozumel – The Diving Capital of the World Cozumel is Mexico’s answer for the adventure diver and as far as writer/publisher Rick Stratton is concerned it is the diving capital of the world. Cozumel literally has more divers per square inch than any other dive destination in the world. Join Rick as he takes you on a very personal tour in the waters off the lands of the Mayan Kings. PUBLISHER’S NOTE

content is the most important thing
T
his week I attended a Content Marketing Conference in Langley, Washington. Organized by Russell Sparkman and the Center for New Media, the two day event focused on creating awareness on how important content is in marketing web sites. The conference showed us different focuses of content strategy and how to think like a publisher in order to create valuable content that brings respect and readers. Content marketing is a marketing technique. It involves creating and distributing relevant and valuable content to attract, acquire, and engage a clearly defined and understood target audience - with the objective of driving profitable customer action. It goes by many names; custom publishing, custom media, customer media, customer publishing and branded media. Wow, that sounds bad – driving customer action…maybe you don’t want to keep reading. Maybe you are wondering ‘what exactly is Rick trying to do here, sell me something’? I am trying to sell you something – the sport of diving. My entire mission is to convince you (our readers) to go diving and have an active diving lifestyle. We do that by creating a local diving magazine and website that help you become more active in the sport, locally; where it really matters. Our sport/industry is really struggling. In fact, I have never seen it worse. Many businesses are just holding on, hoping for better times ahead. It is like heading out to sea in a storm. You may think there is safety in just trying to avoid the rocks, but I recommend a safe harbor or heading in a safe direction at the very least. This recession has forced many to close their business or drastically cut back their marketing plans. Cutting your marketing is like taking off your watch to save time. It does little to save it and gives you a false sense of security, all the while – eroding your real security. As a small business owner, I am acutely aware of the needs and responsibilities of today’s business environment. In order to compete

against other businesses and activities, we need to offer more VALUE to our customers – that is where content marketing comes back in. Content marketing allows me, the publisher, to custom design content in our website and magazine that provides value to our readers. Last month we re-launched our website, www.divenewsnetwork. com. The new site will utilize the content of our magazine, user contributions and custom publishing to increase your experience online. You can see all the content from each month’s magazine in easy to read (easily searched) web page formats or in the cool new PDF magazine reader that we installed. It looks and acts like an online magazine because – it is… Even better, all the stories and ads are linked. You can suggest or contribute articles, photos and video directly to us, at the click of a button. If you did not see your favorite dive site listed in our last article, submit what you know and help us update all of the great places folks can dive. We proudly work hard to provide the best content, but if we get it wrong – let’s fix it. Simply by sending your suggestions to editor@divenewsmag.com you can be an active part in our magazine…how cool is that? By doing this we are living up to our claim, “your regions only local dive magazine, by local divers – for local divers”.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR
Dear Rick,
Love the magazine and your new web site! You guys keep getting better and better each month. I especially love the videos online but they are just your videos. I am a video buff and would like to upload my own. Can I? They are YouTube and it would be really cool to show others how great northeast diving is. Thanks for putting out such a great local magazine/website. Hopefully the rest of us divers can help you offer even more. HaroldTravis Bethlehem, PA

Dear Harold,
Thanks for your note and “atta boy” on the magazine and web site. We have been working really hard over the last year improving both our magazine and website. To us, it is like watching your kids grow; you don’t really notice day to day how big they are getting or how much they are growing up. It is only when you pause and look back a few months, or years, that you see the transformation. It has been awesome launching the new web site. All our content from the magazine is now online and our readers can check it out 24-7-365. The newest edition, our E-reader, makes reading the magazine better online with a cool new PDF flipper. It absolutely ROCKS! Come try it out. I have even more good news; you can already upload your videos to our site. Just register and fill out the form, put in the YouTube or hosting link, and we will take it from there. From a few minutes to a few hours, we will watch your video, and if it meets our guidelines (no porn, no mistreatment of animals etc) your video will be on the site. By sharing information, we all get more. Send the stories, pictures and the videos, we love it all!

Pegasus Improves O-ring
Mike Stratton, Dive News Network’s National Sales Manager, recently won a photo contest sponsored by Princeton Tec. The contest, Princeton Tec Beyondbottom Time, showcases photographers from around the nation. Stratton won with his photo entitled “Free Dive” was showcased in PT’s blog “Living on the Dash”. PT challenged all SCUBA fanatics to take non- typical photos; they wanted to take a different look at diving. If it was quirky, intense, imaginative or odd, PT wanted divers to send it in. Stratton took first out of 217 photo entries. For those interested in seeing Stratton’s photo, visit PT’s blog at www.livingonthedash.com.
After a recent experimental dive to 235 ft., Pegasus noticed that the O-ring between the charge port plug and the charge port opening experienced a “squeeze” that could possibly lead to unit failure. The discovery that has led the Pegasus design team to develop a pressurized chamber in which to test every thruster brought to market. Now, even at pressures equivalent to 250 ft., the Pegasus Thruster operates flawlessly. If you have not received the improved O-ring, please contact them and one will be sent to you at no charge. For more info visit www.pegasusthruster.com.

Deaf Divers Sign in the Soundless Depths
Oliver Perry’s USS Revenge went down off the coast of Rhode Island in 1811 and now a team of divers say they’ve discovered the remains of the ship. Commanded by U.S. Navy hero Oliver Hazard Perry known for defeating the British in the 1813 Battle of Lake Erie, the ship has been laying silently just waiting for divers, Charles Buffum, a brewery owner from Stonington, Conn., and Craig Harger, a carbon dioxide salesman from Colchester, Conn., to discover it. Buffum and Harger along with diver Mike Fournier used a metal detector to search for the ship. A cannon led them to the rest of the ship. They first discovered the ship in August 2005 but kept it secret. Now four more 42-inch-long cannons, an anchor, canister shot, and other metal objects later they are making their discovery known. They say that they are 99 percent sure they have the Revenge. For more info on the find visit www.msnbc.msn. com/id/40973416/ns/technology_and_science-science

Wendy Dannels marks an accomplishment off her “bucket list”. Dannels, 42, is deaf and recently she was able to dive with the help of Worldwide Dive and Sail. The company runs the Siren, a ship for deaf dive trips. They have been organizing regular trips for deaf and hard of hearing divers since 2004; it’s one of a handful of dive companies that offer specialty trips catering to divers with disabilities. The company typically runs one such trip a year, to diving destinations in places like Thailand, Indonesia and the Philippines. The company’s founder, Frank van der Linde, got the idea for the trips after working on the Thai island of Koh Tao with Naomi Hayim, a British dive instructor who is deaf. For more info about these types of dive trips visit www.worldwidediveandsail.com.
Race to the Bottom: Organizers hope underwater scooter racing is the next sky surfing
Diver Michael Vivona, a 56-year-old engineering supervisor for an Orlando television station earned a championship in the emerging extreme sport of underwater scooter racing. Vivona piloted his $7,000 Dive-X Cuda 1150 to victory in a fleet of 15 in the Wes Skiles Memorial Shootout in Key Largo, the third event of the newly formed Wreck Racing League’s Formula H2O circuit. Racing underwater scooters, or diver propulsion vehicles (DPVs), is the brainchild of Joe Weatherby, who spearheaded the 2009 sinking of the Vandenberg as an artificial reef off Key West, and Dave Sirak, who works with Vivona at WFTV-Channel 9 in Orlando. Now Wreck Racing has taken off and is becoming the newest in action sports. Weatherby invites all divers to get involved in DPV racing. For more info visit www. wreckracingleague.com.

DEC conserves, improves and protects New York’s natural resources.
One of the coolest things about being the president of the Long Island Divers Association, besides all of the free cheeseburgers, is the opportunity to work with all kinds of people on the marine community. And if you play your cards right, you just may get a chance to participate in a truly unique adventure. As president of LIDA, I am in frequent contact with lots of folks in the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation. We talk about conditions on artificial reef systems around Long Island,
NORTHEAST SPONSOR
new regulations, and the condition of the many freshwater bodies on Long Island. In fact, one of my frequent contacts is Chart Guthrie, Regional Fisheries Manager for the NYS DEC. During one of our conversations about the current conditions in Lake Ronkonkoma, Chart happened to mention that the DEC was going to be “ElectroFishing” in the lake. Electro-fishing is the use of a powerboat fitted with a 500 volt fish shocking system. Kind of like a fish stungun. It doesn’t hurt the fish, just temporarily incapacitates them so that they can be scooped up when they float to the surface. Ever the opportunist, I quickly secured an invitation to come along on the project. Electro-fishing is usually done at night, when the fish move into the shallows. We arrived at the DEC boat ramp in the early evening to set up and test all of the equipment. On hand was Chart, who was overseeing the operation, Heidi O’Riordan, NYS DEC Aquatic Biologist, Kaitlin Friedman, NYS DEC Fish and Wildlife Technician and “Wild Bill” Holzapfel, a DEC volunteer. After the equipment was ready we selected the areas to be fished. Each fishing session lasted 20 minutes, during which all of the
stunned fish were netted and transferred to a live well on the boat. The boat then returned to the ramp, where the specimens were weighed and measured. In addition, most of the fish had a couple of scales removed for microscopic examination at a later date. After the fish were cataloged, they were returned to the lake unharmed. During the 3 sessions that we held the night that I was there, we collected over 400 individual fish, including Largemouth Bass, Walleye, White Perch, Yellow Perch, Bluegills, Pumpkinseeds and Carp. The following evening saw similar results and added Pickerel and an invasive species, the Chinese Weatherfish, to the list. All of the information gathered will be used to assess the DEC’s efforts to regulate fish populations, which is vital to the continued health of the eco-system. Thanks to the DEC for letting me tag along, and many thanks for all of the work that they do protecting our local environment. boston scuba show-showing off the best
The 60th edition of the Boston Scuba Show to be held Feb. 26 will feature Cathy Church, Dallas Edmiston, Dave Clancy, and John (Blackie) Blackadar – all honored individuals who have been “spiked” by The Underwater Club of Boston. The presentation spikes are wrested from the sunken wreck U.S. Frigate New Hampshire lying off shore from Manchester, Massachusetts. The ship sank over 85 years ago and the shipwreck site was the first underwater national historic site. Had the wreckage not been listed it would eventually have disintegrated and disappeared. The site will now last forever allowing future divers to see a piece of history. Part of having the site listed involved training a member of the national historic sites committee to make the dive to view the remains. The Underwater Club of Boston
took several national committee members into the protected waters of Cape Ann, and after introducing them all to beginner scuba skills, they then chose the one who seemed best suited for the dive. The training and dive took place in 1976 and the effort was part of the club’s 200th anniversary of 1776. Arnie Pettiglio of the North Shore Frogmen Dive Club (The Frogs) will make the 2011 presentation to John Blackadar. All New England area dive clubs are encouraged to attend and to join with the Underwater Club of Boston in recognizing and applauding the 2011 recipient. The list of past recipients of the Paul Revere Spike Award is long and includes Jacques Piccard, Stan Waterman, and Cmdr. George Bond. This year many scuba clubs will be taking part in the show. Clubs included this year are The North Shore Frogmen, The Metro-West Dive Club, the South Shore Neptunes, and the New England Aquarium Dive Club. Dive clubs are a great way to stay connected to local dive events and other divers, especially during the winter months. Everyone is invited to attend this year’s edition of the Boston Scuba Show. Mark those dates on your calendar now…especially the Saturday Night International Film Festival David Doubilet will host this year’s Film Festival. David is a National Geographic Explorer, photographer, environmental pictorial essayist, and many credit David with being the guy that got all of us started taking cameras underwater. David comes equipped with an incisive wit and depth of understanding about life beneath the sea and underwater photography. On stage, based on long friendships with his fellow professionals, David always adds a dash of insightfulness to his introductions, David Doubilet much as one carefully adds
spice to a meal … just enough to enhance the flavor, not so much to overwhelm the dish itself. After a long absence at Beneath the Sea, Howard and Michelle Hall are coming back to the Saturday Night International Film Festival. Stepping-out from behind their IMAX camera, they will tell what it is like to haul such a beast around the world and underwater to create “Under the Sea 3D.” In “Under the Sea 3D” Howard and Michele Hall introduce audiences to some of the most exotic marine life in the world, offering a view into an underwater world few people have ever seen. . “Shooting with IMAX cameras can be enormously challenging,” said Howard, “because of the size and bulk of the gear and its complexity. But when you see those images projected in an IMAX theatre it’s a stunning experience.” Howard and his crew each spent more than 350 hours underwater and 110 days at sea to capture almost ten hours of raw footage. Here is your chance to see it done. You might want to note that back on the bill of the Saturday Night International Film Festival for the second time was Feodor Pitcarin. You might remember that exquisite

video Feodor presented a few years back of the mother whale and her calf – warm and moving it was a unique and beautiful presentation of the harsh realities of life that touches these giants of the sea. In 2008, The Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History in Washington, D.C. opened the largest exhibit in its history, the Sant Ocean Hall. A keynote feature of the hall is the Ocean Odyssey presentation – eight high-definition projections that wrap 200 feet of the hall’s upper bay. The Smithsonian commissioned Feodor Pitcairn, filmmaker, and ocean conservationist, to create this one-of-akind installation. A pioneer in underwater

hen it comes to choices, Boston has plenty of activities to choose from. You can visit the USS Constitution, the oldest commissioned warship afloat, and then dine at the historical Union Oyster House: America’s oldest restaurant. You can visit Bunker Hill, then grab a bite and brew at the original Cheers on Beacon Street. You can mix and match by visiting Kings Chapel, the oldest continuously operating church in America across the street from the Parker Omni House Hotel, then devour a foot long Subway sandwich nearby. Or, you can travel out to Fenway Park and watch the baseballs fly by as you enjoy an all American hot dog. If you think the fun stops on land in Boston, think again. The underwater attractions are as plentiful as the land attractions. You have tons of choices but unless you live in the Boston area, I recommend you call in sick for a few months; it’s gonna take you that long to try and explore all the dive sites. In interest of

NORTHEAST DIVE SITE PROFILE
The Wreck of the City of Salisbury. Photo by shipwreckexpo.com helping out, however, I have made a few lists to help those of you divers who are not familiar with the area. My short list of dive sites around the Boston area includes over 20 dive sites. My expanded list, which includes the dives around Cape Ann, has over 40 dives. Neither of these two lists includes all the possible dive sites around the islands out in the Boston Harbor so we’ll leave that for another time. The topographical substrate at each site varies from pinnacles to boulders
to rocks and gravel to sand and walls as well as wrecks and kelp. Needless to say Boston has a lot to offer in diversity when it comes to diving. With so much to choose from I asked local experts at a few dive shops about their three favorite dive sites and here are the results. Captain James Sullivan of The Boston Harbor Diving Company says The Graves, Martins Ledge and the wreck of the City of Salisbury were his favorite three dives. He likes The Graves because, as he puts
BOSTON it, “the color of rocks, the swim through areas, the striped bass and lobsters,” are plentiful. Martins Ledge offers “walls in some spots, a pinnacle that starts at 25 ft. and drops down to 60 ft. as well as Pollock, flounder, and lobster”. The Wreck of the City of Salisbury is interesting for its debris field. “The Salisbury has scattered debris,” says Sullivan. “The wreckage dropped off into two sections; one section is against a 25 ft. deep pinnacle that goes down to 55 ft. at the base. The bow section rests at 90 ft. and there are still gadgets and bronze items down there.” It is interesting to note The City of Salisbury went down in 1938 and was a 415 ft. long freighter. Nick Fazah from East Coast Divers likes Magnolia Rocks, Cathedral Rocks, and Pickett’s Ledge. He likes the Magnolia Rocks shore dive because of the environment. “The Magnolia Rocks has boulder formations and lots of sea life,” says Fazah. “I enjoy Cathedral Rocks because it’s a nice easy deep shore dive at 70 to 80 ft. with big boulders and lobsters,” Fazah says. “At high tide you can do a giant stride entry.” Fazah says that a good boat dive is Pickett’s Ledge. “There is a lot of lobsters and soft corals such as anemones,” Fazah says. “From 20 ft. to 60-70 ft. there is a wall of rocks, tons of crevices and lots of marine life because it’s offshore.”
Ocean Wreck Divers of New Jersey was originally organized as the New Jersey Wreck Divers in 1978 by a small group of divers who wanted to dive together. The group was brought together by Joan Follmer who was then teaching in the area.

NORTHEAST DIVE REPORT

Mark Potter’s, owner of MASS Diving, favorite dive site is Saturday Night Ledge. “The best part of the dive is between 80’ to 100’. This dive site is loaded with sea anemones, northern red anemones, spider crabs, small schooling fish, and lots of different star fish like blood stars, bat stars, and sunburst stars.” Mark’s second favorite is Halfway Rock because it’s a big rock sticking out of the water and it looks like
an upside down ice cream cone. “This is a great multilevel dive from 0’ to 110’. This site is loaded with marine life and beautiful orange soft corals on the back side around 80’ to 110’. You just spiral around the rock. It’s a very pretty dive,” says Mark. Mark’s third favorite site is the Dry Salvages off Rockport . “There are grooves, swim through areas and crevices. It’s only 45 ft. deep and it’s fun to play with the seals,” Mark says.
“And of course there are the lobsters”. Massachusetts offers a wide variety of dive sites waiting to be explored by you! These are just some of the local favorites but there are other wreck dives worth mentioning. The Romance, which sank in 1936 in 70-80 ft. is an interesting dive and The Kiowa, which sank in 1903 at 30-40 ft. draws a lot of divers. The Charles Haight liberty ship sank in 1946 in 45 ft. of water and the wreck of the Chester Poling, an oil tanker that sank 90 ft. of water in 1977 are both big dive destinations in the area. For drift diving there is Broad Sound where you can drift from Nahant to Deer Island with kelp and gravel at 30 to 70 ft. Shore diving is a favorite in the Cape Ann area. When doing the shore dives one has to take parking into consideration. Marblehead Light, aka (Chadley Hovey State Park) allows no diving on the weekends so parking in the area is difficult. Norman’s Woe allows residents only to park nearby so you have a long walk to get to the kelp beds in 10-35 ft. of water. At Stage Fort Park there is a fee in-season but no fee off-season. Whale Cove has no parking either but you can plan to have someone drop you off. As with all shore dives, keeping pets on leash, reducing levels of noise and leaving the area litter free will build respect and friendship with the locals keeping these areas open to divers for years to come.

NORTHEAST DIVE SITE PROFILE Boston divers are known to go over to Deer Island, dive the coast of Maine and explore the St. Lawrence River in Canada too. Some Boston divers also frequent Dutch Springs in Pennsylvania so there are many choices when it comes to diving in the area. I met Boston divers out in the Grand Cayman, so apparently they aren’t afraid to get a bit away from home either. If you do find yourself in the Boston area and are unsure of where or with whom to dive there is one good place to go and dive with other locals. The Lobster Hunter Specialty Course is offered at local dive shops and appears to be a popular way to break into Boston area diving. You just might meet a Boston area dive buddy and have a

chance to dive and dine with/on lobsters. Of course if you catch a lobster over 22 lbs., 3.5 ft. long and over 140 years old, don’t eat it…you may have just won a world record. But whether or not you are into lobsters you can still join a local dive club such as the Boston Sea Rovers, Decapod Divers, or join the MIT Scuba Club to meet and buddy up with Only residents fellow divers; Boston is from the state of a great place to dive and Massachusettes, the lobster is optional. DIVING LIFESTYLE
BOSTON CLUBS
Boston and beyondSolid Clubs and Happy Divers By Erin Boyajian Guest Writer, Dive News Network
Boston is a city filled with people who love to dive. In fact, all around Massachusetts you can find passionate, devoted divers who love to share their dive adventures and experiences. Dive clubs certainly provide an outlet for this, along with many other benefits including meeting like-minded people, and socializing. Highlighted here are just some of the great clubs that can be found in this area. Boston Sea Rovers The Boston Sea Rovers started as a club in the 1950’s, attracting diving enthusiasts and others who shared love of marine life. Today they have a large show in the Boston area filled with speakers, clinics, films, and plenty of information and attractions for divers. This year’s show is from March 4-6 at the Boston North Shore Crown Plaza Hotel. The New England Aquarium Dive Club The New England Aquarium Dive Club or the NEADC hold meetings on the first and third Wednesday of the month at 6:30 p.m. The club has more than 600 members and organizes all different types of diving activities including environmental cleanup
and survey dives. At the meeting on the third Wednesday, two dives in the Giant Ocean Tank are raffled off. Old Colony Amphibians Dive Club “The Amphibians” is another local dive club with a reputation for staying active. They meet every week (every other week in the winter) in Attleboro, Mass. This club has been around for over 52 years. They have two annual weekends diving in P-town, a weekend diving in Salem for scallops, a family day, a well-attended New Year’s Day dive and raffle. They also go out and dive every Friday night and most weekends, weather dependent. Though not a huge club, it is well attended. Many of the members have boats from which they dive and it is a very loyal group. They march to a different drum in that they focus on dive and family related business meetings; not speakers so much. Metro-West Dive Club The Metro-West Dive Club meets monthly on the second Tuesday of every month at the Courtyard Marriot in Natick, and usually has presentations with speakers on a variety of subjects. A special treat is the meeting raffle. Donated prizes are given away, such as gear, antiques, and
more. Members socialize for an hour or so before the meeting starts at 7:30 p.m. Past speakers have included Jerry Shine, speaking on New England nudibranchs and just recently, Jay Ganson on diving in Antarctica. Other speaking topics have been scientific diving, destination diving, rebreather discussions, technology, caves, and invasive marine species. North Shore Frogmen’s Club In Beverly, the North Shore Frogmen’s Club was founded in 1957. It has 100 plus members and a rich history. Hailed as the “oldest sport diving club in the world”, LIFE magazine included a double page photo feature of the club in 1958. Meetings are every Thursday evening at 8 p.m. at The Palmer Cove Yacht Club in Salem, Mass. The club hosts a variety of dives weekly, including ice dives, night dives, deep, wreck, and standard boat dives. Various social activities include weekend family trips, picnics, and banquets. Members help each other in many ways by offering advice and expertise in all areas of diving. There is also a buddy list that members can use to always find someone to dive with. Deep Six Divers Smaller in size but not in enthusiasm Deep Six Divers is located in Central Massachusetts. They meet in Leicester on the first Friday of the month. Founded in 1990, they keep their members active by hosting local dives and also trips around the world. Social events are a key focus, and they recognize that not all people in their member’s lives are divers so in keeping with their needs and interests, Deep Six finds dive destinations that can also appeal to non-divers.

Undersea Divers Dive Club Undersea Divers Dive Club meets seasonally to go diving, but they also focus on underwater photography. This club meets the last Wednesday of every month. The owner, Bob Boyle, arranges speakers to come and talk, but a member emphasized it’s a casual affair. “You learn a lot of photo tips, but it’s laid back and not a formal class,” says Boyle. “We’re all in it to get a little better together.” Northeast Scuba Dive Club Northeast Scuba Dive Club in Chelmsford focuses on having a good dive related meeting that focuses on diving. They have a coordinator who books speakers. Recently, they had Andrew Martinez discussing his book, “Marine Life of the North Atlantic”. Meetings are the first Tuesday of every month at 7 p.m. at the shop. People usually arrive around 6:15 - 6:30 p.m. to socialize before things get started. All of these meetings and social events help keep the dive community vibrant, especially in the winter months when most people choose not to dive. Through their winter dive club experiences, they can meet new friends and make plans for the next dive season which is always just around the corner. So check out your local dive club and see what’s happening…you never know what you might dive into. ■

Milwaukee Dive Apparel introduces the new “Wreck of the Northerner” T-shirt
Since the Northerner has been added to the National Register of Historic Places, it truly is one of Wisconsin’s finest dives. A wooden two masted schooner, 81 feet in length, she sits upright and intact, in 130 feet of water just off the shores of Port Washington, WI. Now artist Cal Kothrade has captured her majestic bow complete with figurehead and bow sprit being inspected by two divers, in a hand drawn, ‘line art’ style rendering on the back of the shirt. The front left chest sports a side-on view of the entire hull as she sits on the bottom today with the words “I dove the Northerner” and “Listed on the National Register of Historic Places”. YOUTH OUTREACH
book review
“My Underwater Photo Journey”
By Selene Peterson and Reagan Cathy Church has created an underwater photo journey extending across the Caribbean to the South Pacific. This stunning book illustrates so brilliantly not only amazing sea life but shares with the reader a deeper understanding of Cathy and her love and respect for the sea life she photographs. These images show her sense of whimsy and art, yet balanced by her education in marine biology. I had the pleasure of sitting down and reading this book with my son Reagan. Reagan loved the book because it provided interesting details about underwater life and found Cathy’s humor amusing and encouraging. Reagan was so deeply moved by the images in the book. He stated, “Underwater sea life is endangered by humans throwing waste into the oceans and not respecting the fragility of sea life.” He went on to describe his feelings, “My favorite part of the book was learning how much Cathy cared about sea life and it made me feel loving towards the creatures and plants that live in the oceans.” This is a book that can be enjoyed at any age, sparking the imagination of young children and opening a dialogue of the importance of marine conservation. We finished the book and our discussion with a greater value and understanding for our delicate underwater ecosystem. Order your copy at www.cathychurch.com/Cathy’s_Book.html
WITH BRIANNA
plastic
By: Briana Darcy
Did you know, we Americans represent 5% of the world’s population, but we produce 1/3 of the world’s garbage. WOW! Can you believe that? Most of that garbage ends up in the ocean. The Great Pacific Garbage Patch, as we know it, is the world’s LARGEST floating patch of garbage. It is twice the size of the state of Texas. Ship dumping alone accounts for 1/5 of the garbage and the rest of the trash unfortunately, comes from us humans. It is said that 90% of the trash is plastic and plastic, as we know it, is not bio-degradable. Some people say that there is 3.5 million tons of garbage in the Pacific. The GPGP is not easy to clean up what so ever because there are microscopic particles all throughout the water columns, which we can not see with the human eye. This is really unfortunate because many of the fish and animals are dying because they ingest the tiny particles of the plastic and it becomes lodged inside their digestive system. This slowly kills them. We could try to clean it up but it would take forever and the scientists are unsure on how to clean up these particles. Nobody realizes how terrible this really is, but they will, when the world’s oceans population decreases. So please always remember to pick up trash in the water and on the beaches. Always try to attend beach clean ups. You can also try to organize a beach clean up through your local dive shop. Every little effort you make will help the environment. Please recycle and use reusable water bottles. Oh, did I mention the word RECYCLE??? Find out more about Brianna at www.divenewsnetwork.com

he windy city, land of the skyscraper and home of Chicago style pizza, playground of the famous Bears, Cubs and diving mecca…wait…diving mecca? Really? Well…yes, it is. While being famous for all of those other things, divers know this is also the place to come if you want to have some great all-around diving experiences. By all around we mean lake, quarry, wreck…you name it, Chicago has a place to dive it. No matter where you choose to dive in the Chicago area, each of the top dive sites has different advantages. Most of us are divers of habit revisiting the same sites over and over again but in the upper part of the state of Illinois you can get adventurous and actually dive some different venues without having to worry about a lot of travel. So where do you start? On our diving tour of the Chicago area we are merely making suggestions because there are so many places to dive. No matter where you decide to dive, however, we would be remiss if we didn’t start with Lake Michigan. Lake Michigan is a diver’s playground.

Dive map for the Sebastopol wreck. Photo by scubachicago.com Fraught with historical wrecks, this area draws people from all over the world, not just the United States. Diving from the shores of Lake Michigan is like a treasure hunt without the need of a map. This part of Lake Michigan is renowned for its shipwrecks. History is buried here in the old shipping lanes that claimed the ships and lives of many a seaman. Old competitive shipping merchants vied for who could deliver faster and in worse weather only to discover that the Great Lake had a mind of its own. Famous for its storms and white squalls, Lake Michigan has a nautical disaster history that has created the ultimate in wreck diving experiences. With vis that can top 60 feet, the wrecks around Chicago can be experienced by the newest of divers. Just off Oak Street Beach right in downtown Chicago, divers can hit the waters for many shipwrecks. You can reach the Sebastopol, a steamer that sank in about 15 feet of water. It went down in a bad storm in 1956, just a year after it was built. This

interesting wreck offers a look back into history via some still waiting-to-be-found artifacts. The ship was carrying over 600 tons of cargo when it went down and all of that is now spread over the bottom. This is a one tank dive and is great for divers of all levels.

Another fascinating wreck is The Tacoma, a wooden hulled tug. The Tacoma had been a hard working vessel with 35 years of duty in her wake before she went down in 1929. She is approximately 60 percent intact but has a lot of damage to her starboard and bow. The Tacoma draws divers because she is an easy dive. The David Dows was a cargo five-masted schooner that sank in 1892. Historians refer to it as the “grandest cargo schooner to have ever sailed the Great Lakes”. The schooner is one of the most popular attractions for divers in the area. The David Dows was 365 feet long, had a 37 foot beam, 18 foot draft and over 1,400 net tons. Today divers can be taken back to 1889 when the David Dows sank. Seven miles from the Chicago Lake front the Dows was rediscovered in the late 50’s to land on every diver’s bucket list. Shipwrecks are not the only claim to fame for divers in the Chicago area. Quarries are a huge draw in this part of the country as well. Haigh Quarry in Kankakee, Illinois a former limestone mining site is a 12-acre quarry approximately 60 miles south of Chicago. This diver favorite sports seven training platforms at 25 feet and an eighth one at 65 feet. It offers divers a chance to explore a large stone crusher, a 33-foot cabin cruiser, which is penetrable, as well as a Marine dump truck. The depths hit 90 feet

and vis ranges from 35 feet in the spring and late fall to 15 feet in the summer. Talking about Chicago diving wouldn’t be complete unless we mentioned the Buccaneer. Chicago-area divers were treated to a new dive adventure in 2010 after a lot of heavy planning and work. Two years and $20,000 later Capt. Jim Gentile, a scuba diving instructor, who also owns Windy City Diving, led the operation in June to sink the 98-foot Buccaneer. The effort was paid for by donations from local divers and dive shops. The Buccaneer now sits upright in 70 feet of water about 10 miles off Burnham Harbor creating a new
artificial reef. The Buccaneer had served as a World War II vessel as well as a converted cruise ship before finding its way to the bottom of Lake Michigan. The newly sunk vessel is already becoming a big draw for divers. In other lake diving, the Chicago area offers up for your approval Pearl Lake in South Beloit, Illinois. An average depth of 85 ft. offers divers a chance to explore diving in-land style. Vis on Pearl Lake averages between 10-40 feet depending on the season. There is a lot to see in the lake. From the east beach divers can get to an old step van, several boats and a 33 ft.

yellow submarine. The north shore offers a school bus, a 30 ft. cabin cruiser, a statue of the Lady of the Lake and old railroad tracks that can be followed for quite a distance. The west shore is home to a statute of a rather large alligator, a Beechcraft twin-engine airplane and more boats. Twelve training platforms allow local dive shops to conduct certifications and the surrounding community has a lot of amenities. So are you convinced yet? Do you see why the Chicago area holds so much to offer the modern day diver? Whether it is history you seek, the warm waters of a controlled quarry dive or the wreck diving offered in a natural lake, the Chicago area has something for everyone. It doesn’t matter if you are a new diver or a veteran, there are shipwrecks and submerged airplanes calling your name so… grab your tank and fins…Chicago diving is just waiting to show you a little diversity. ■

ozumel is Mexico’s answer for the adventure diver and as far as I am concerned it is the diving capital of the world. Cozumel literally has more divers per square inch than any other dive destination I have ever had the pleasure to visit. Recently I got my turn to cross it off my bucket list and I’ll tell you - I was amazed. Cozumel rests 12 miles off the coast of the Yucatan Peninsula. It is renowned the world over for its white sandy beaches and the waters surrounding this peaceful community. I was met with remarkable clarity in the water and an array of blues and greens that make your head spin. Jacques Cousteau once declared Cozumel one of the most beautiful scuba diving areas of the world and I would agree. The area has a rich history and an abundance of ancient wonders everywhere you look. I spent a lot of time diving and exploring the many facets of this little slice of diving heaven and I now tell everyone who will listen, (as well as a few who’d rather I just be quiet) that they need to get on the ball and get their tanks down there. From the moment we arrived, we felt the warmth of the people. Everywhere we went the hospitality was evident. I originally went down to visit with the folks who were developing the “Ultimate Diver Challenge” a television show that pits divers against one another in a test of skill. I spent some time with them, interviewing all the contestants and taking some great photos as well as video, all of which I will be sharing with you in the future. After our visit to the set of the Ultimate Diver Challenge we got a chance to do what I was dying to do…dive. Divers come

to Cozumel from all over the world to explore the Mesoamerica Reef, the largest reef in the Western hemisphere. There are over 250 species of tropical fish as well as turtles, stingray and more inhabiting the waters around the reef and, trust me, you are in no short supply of things to see. You literally jump into the water and just drift. You don’t have to go chasing anything down; the underwater world in Cozumel simply comes to you. My friend and fellow journalist Nancy Boucha and I discovered this first hand with a Whale shark adventure of our own. Nancy who co-owns Scuba Systems in Skokie, Ill. had a stroke seven months earlier and this was her first trip back into the water. I was honored to have been the dive buddy she wanted to have me along as she tried out the water for the first time after her stroke. We took the ferry from Cozumel to Playa Del Carmen and a bus north Chiquita (port where the where the whale shark snorkel tours are based.) You are not allowed to dive, it is snorkeling only. But let me tell you that this type of dive is less like diving and more like the excitement you feel when white water rafting. It all goes very quickly and is not for the faint of heart. Nancy jumped in with both fins and did amazingly well. When we got to Holbox where the whale sharks were, our guides hurried us into the

water and telling us go, go, go…I didn’t get good photos the first time around but on our second trip into the water I was amazed to see these huge creatures swimming nearby. It was incredible. Come to the website and see the video. After my adventure with Nancy I wanted to dive as often as I could so I spent the next
three days in and out of the water on every dive I could. I was in awe of how easy it was to dive Cozumel. During the times out of the water we were treated to the incredible hospitality of the locals. I felt at home everywhere I went. I really want to thank Anna Bravo form Cozumel Tourism who gave me a great land

tour and a chance to explore the city above the water. She spent a day with us taking me around and introducing me to local business owners while pointing out the many sites in the Cozumel area. Bravo was a terrific guide as I was treated to stories of local history, explanations of local festivals and a chance to visit many of the local hotels. When I travel to a new area I like to explore the accommodations so that I can suggest some to our readers. I have to say that I literally enjoyed every place we visited. There is nothing like coming in from a day of diving and being able to relax. I stayed at Scuba Club Cozumel and when I say it was comfortable, I mean it was, feels like home but more relaxing comfortable. There was a great pool with an outdoor patio so you could relax and have that after dive cocktail. There were even hammocks on a private beach where guests could really relax. It was so private that it was hard to tell that you were mere minutes from downtown. A good friend and Dive News Video Editor at large, Gary Knapp of Dive Travel Videos, has taken some breathtaking video footage of Cozumel and he thinks it is one of those places that everyone just has to make time for. A television personality, Midwest diver and videographer who shoots film in over 30 locations around the world, Knapp says that Cozumel is on the top of his list of
places to recommend. “Cozumel is known for its rich Mayan heritage but also it’s incredible diving,” Knapp says. “Divers come to Cozumel from all over the globe. I hear people call it the ‘drift diving capital of the world’ all the time and they are right.” Knapp adds that the island’s dive shops can accommodate as many as 1100 divers a day for an excursion. “There are truly magical reefs in some of the warmest and clearest tropical water in the world in Cozumel,” Knapp says. There are a lot of dive sites to explore in Cozumel. You will find amazing scenery in Santa Rosa, Palancar, Paraiso, Punta Sur and Maracaibo. Around Swallows’ Island you will find yourself in a natural aquarium full of life. It’s like swimming in a dream loaded with turtles, sharks, rays and dolphins. It is important to note that diving Cozumel needs to be a guided activity. There are a number of areas that should be for experienced divers only however there are places for beginning as well including a newly minted Cancun Underwater Museum sculpture park that sports over 400 artistic sculptures created by renowned British artist Jason Decaires Taylor. (See story on page……) This incredible new attraction caters to both scuba divers and snorkelers. During one day of diving I dove with Alan Martin of Sea Robin Charters. years. He has a small 6 pax operation. It was great and felt like having a private tour. (check out the video). By now you are getting the message loud and clear that I truly enjoyed my time in Cozumel. I do a lot of traveling and I have a great time everywhere I go but this trip was a no-effort-needed-sit-back-and-relax dive trip with amazing sights and incredible diving. I have now moved this breath-taking dive destination off my bucket list and put it into a permanent place on my Do Over and Over list. ■

very now and then I think I have made it, a beautiful house, a good looking lady and a view of the ocean. I paint and carry on about how good life is, all the great things I think I might be able to do. Like the rest of you I am trying to pay the bills, as an artist and diver, it can get tough, but I have made it through so far.
This morning while sipping on my 3rd large coffee with enough synthetic cream in it to give me a heart attack, I am reflecting. I reckon that coffee is considered one of nature’s greatest gifts but all it does is make me very edgy. This is great for sales call and speed painting and it does give me mental and emotional clarity without harmful side effects and all at the speed of light. In fact some days it affects me so fast that I often
forget what I was thinking about in the first place. Today I am thinking of Palau…a place that has become a sanctuary for me. To be honest, the coffee in Palau is not that great, but that’s ok because the rest of Palau will knock your dive booties off. Oh yes Palau… would trade in my fancy Starbucks right now for one more dip in that warm sweet substance called the ocean in and around Palau.

PALAU commonly known as the Mandarin Goby or the Mandarin Fish, they’re true name is the Mandarin Dragonet. The painting I presented to the people of Palau is a unique style of dot painting that took me almost two months to create using acrylic paint and incorporating seawater and sand from Palau making the painting truly part of the island and ocean. Each dot is placed dot by dot one atop another to build up the dot texture. It is my connecting of the dots, diving and painting, that translate my dives to canvas, my feelings to fish and the sense of the ocean to color and texture. Even the most recent of cameras cannot capture what is taken from the mind and heart and placed on canvas. The imagination is intensified by the oceans emotion and the beauty of nature. It is this that I wanted to share with the people of Palau so that they would forever be reminded, each time they looked at my painting, that they are doing good work for the ocean’s creatures. The safety stop was on the swallow part of the same reef formation with a guaranteed encounter with Moray Eels, Nudibranchs Sea Anemones, large Gorgonian fans and a mass of healthy soft corals. This is truly an amazing place. Recently while hosting A Kids Sea Camp event over Thanksgiving, I had the pleasure of meeting President Toribiong. My original painting of the Mandarin Fish was presented to President Toribiong and
the people of Palau as a token of thanks for their ongoing environmental efforts and good stewardship of the oceans. I had selected the Mandarin fish since my first sighting of this critter was in Palau some 20 years ago and the Mandarin fish is one of the most beautiful members of the genus Synchiropus; the most breath-taking marine fish ever to be found in the oceans around Palau. The Mandarin itself looks more like an intricate painting than it does a fish. Its entire body is made up of wavy alternating lines of orange, blue and green. While they are

Keldan Lights
This year at DEMA I had an opportunity to speak with Daniel Keller the Inventor of the Keldan dive light. His light is smaller than a Jedi light saber from star wars, but it puts out a futuristic 1600 to 4500 lumens depending on the model. Both models burn at 5000kelvin to match sunlight and they have adjustable output so you can have the world lit up like the sun for 55 minutes, or more mildly brightened up for up to 240minutes. Add a handle to either model, or replace the lens with a diffuser lens for maximum even distribution of light and you are ready to tape HD videos. The lights are rated down to 656ft and have a charge display on the rear see through cap, as well as a built in safety light. It’s aluminum housing should make it last for some time in the future too. www.keldanlights.com
Scubapro A700 Regulator
Introducing the A700 Regulator. “The crown jewel of regulators. Brilliant. Durable. Unique. Its beauty will seduce you. Its performance will amaze you.” Sounds more like an ad for a Lexus car or a Rolex watch than a dive regulator, but Scuba Pro has always been known for it’s quality and performance. Scubapro has worldwide brand recognition and the new A700 regulator is no exception. “Handcrafted to the highest standards in the industry, its precision delivers exceptional ease of breathing at any depth, any temperature, anywhere.” What’s not to like about a high quality product that is so versatile and so functional at so many levels? Whites Undergarments
Whites now have three main undergarments. The MK1 micro fleece provides warmth for tropical to temperate zones. The MK3 is a thick to the touch one-piece suit constructed for ice divers. You’ll be warmer than a polar bear in this outfit. Did I mention that it has fleeced lined hand warming pockets too? The MK2 is versatile for layering to match the surrounding water temperature. It is a one piece John not quite as thick as the MK3, but you can wear the MK1 or the MK0 underwear under the MK2. You can also wear the MK2 jacket over the John, which comes with a storm hood and zip lock sleeves. You can even add glacier socks and a fleece cap. The MK2 and the MK3 are so warm and comfy that you may want to wear them all day while diving on the wall, and afterwards while walking around the mall. www.whitesdiving.com
McNett Dive Care Essentials
McNett has a new Mini maintenance Kit for dive gear. It’s a little zip pouch that you can take anywhere. The kit includes Sea Drops Anti-fog for Dive masks, Sea Buff mask pre cleaner which also works as a slate cleaner, MiraZyme Odor eliminator that cleans algae, bacteria, and mold, wetsuit/drysuit shampoo to remove Organic residue, chlorine, and salt deposits, a marine whistle with clip, and a dive gear care and repair guide. The repair guide gives you tips and tricks to help make your dive gear last for years. I’ve been using these products for years too. As any diver knows, there is nothing worse than having a mask you can’t see out of, and dive buddies that don’t want to be down wind of or seen with you. www.mcnett.com

are also a lot of new regulators available for purchase on-line for which we have yet to be able to secure parts and training because the manufacturer has no established footprint in America, so we can’t service those, either. Taking the time to get a little education from your local dive retailer can help you make a much wiser equipment investment.” Divers often ask how often they should have their equipment serviced. Here’s Terry’s answer: “Obviously, we are BIG fans of regular service intervals. But this is not a one-size-fits-all deal. Variables include the number of dives, field care, reg make/ model, etc. Most manufacturers recommend a year. Some use the number of dives. We suggest the following rule of thumb: Never dive your equipment if you don’t trust it to perform flawlessly, even in an unanticipated out-of-air emergency where a much greater demand is placed on it. If you don’t believe it is in this condition, have it serviced.” Learn more about AirTech at www. airtechscubaservices.com. ■
