PUBLISHER’S NOTE We Need To Risk Hanging Together Or Assuredly We Shall All Hang Separately

here is a generally accepted story from the signing of the Declaration of Independence where John Hancock said Congress, having signed the Declaration, must now “all hang together”, and Benjamin Franklin replied: “Yes, we must indeed all hang together, or most assuredly we shall all hang separately.” The risks of speaking out against the King were dangerous. However, these men made a choice and the history books reflect the results. In the current economy, industry participants and leaders have a choice, and history will reveal which one was successful. As business owners, we must choose differently than the status quo. We need to speak out against our own oppressor of apathy and separatism, and we need to seek an agreement. We need to work together as an industry, or we shall all hang separately. Our times are forcing a change in business. As a business and industry we are all struggling with the changes. The economy itself, the internet and the changing customer buying habits, are forcing ‘the pie’ to feel smaller. The Northeast and Midwest is one of the hardest hit sections of the country. The high unemployment in the

manufacturing segments, diving itself in the Midwest and Northeast requires a sacrifice. The pie feels smaller, and as a result the dive retailers are fighting each other for a share of the shrinking pie. The problem with fighting a shrinking pie means there is less for all. This month we celebrate our thanks for all our blessings. I believe one of our greatest blessings comes from our greatest challenges. Our challenging business climate can result in a rebirth of our spirit. When we realize the need to work cooperatively for the benefit of all, we will find the pie begins to grow. This year I have attended nearly all of the DUI Dog Rally events. At these events, DUI dealers are encouraged to work collectively and cooperatively to promote drysuit diving and snorkeling. They all benefit from the Rally. I was impressed by the retailers themselves. They were amazing, warm, personable and passionate advocates for the sport. But I noticed while the events were successful they were a lot smaller than they could have been. Most events are geographically spaced by hundreds of miles so there are usually 20 retailers in each event region. Sadly, only about half the retailers in each area showed up for the event. Each event hosted 150-200 attendees, which is less than 10 divers per shop. Some shops exceed the average, so I am NOT talking about the high performers, just the average (or even those not attending). If each shop increased the number of divers, or potential divers, to 50 then these events could be 2 to 3 times more successful. Talking with DUI test divers after the event the most common thought was how much fun they had at the event overall, not necessarily the dive itself. Imagine the level of excitement brought with more attendees. I have subscribed to your magazine for a couple years now and like most of the content. Previous to getting the subscription, I picked up the magazine in dive shops or quarries I visited. My concern is this: I just received the September issue Sept. 27. Your dive “Club Meetings & Events” is always out of date by the time I receive the latest issue! I was diving at Pearl Lake Sept.10. They had a supply of not only the September issue of Midwest Dive News, but also the September issue of Northeast Dive News! If I were publishing your magazines, I would make sure the paying subscribers received the issue before the dive shops and other venues. For me to pay for something that is dated, I need to see the value. Presently, the value is diminished. I am the leader of a dive club and have considered submitting an event to the calendar section, but realize the event would probably have happened before anyone would read about it. Please take this as constructive criticism and strive to publish on time in the future. Thank you, David

Thank you for the constructive criticism, I appreciate it! Most people will not take the time. We appreciate your feedback and concern. You are correct, it does show poorly of us to get you the magazine after the first and we CAN get it there by the first. AND we should. I am changing our process this month, so you and the other subscribers who are paying for the magazines get the mag as quickly as possible. We work extremely hard to gather relevant news and events. And, mostly, get the magazine out on time, so the problem is really with the mailing process. Please read the full version of my letter online to understand our mailing process. However, to give you the short version: the Dive

LETTER TO THE EDITOR Shops who support the magazine by paying for a “Dive Directory” listing on page 30-31 get 15 magazines mailed in a flat rate envelop - 3 day service. They have them by the first week of the month. It costs them $12.50 per month to be listed, which covers the magazines and the postage but not much else. However, it is a great Win-Win and we are happy to have their support and support them in turn. Other shops not listed in the Dive Directory and our subscribers were getting magazines mailed bulk rate which can take 10 days to 3 weeks depending on the season. We are changing to first class service for our subscribers (who really do deserve it). Next month you will get your magazine as close to the first as possible – thanks for the suggestion and “call to action.” With regards to listing your activity for your club, we encourage participation in the calendar, especially since it is FREE! We only ask that your club meetings and events are submitted at least 6-8 weeks in advance. The challenge is how difficult it is to print the magazine just a few weeks ahead. We can’t do what other magazines do and print the “December” edition in October if we are going to include your events in the activities section at no cost to you. As a leader in a dive club, I’m sure you understand not planning June dives in January. Lastly, we are a hybrid magazine with a PRINT and ONLINE edition. You can get our magazines and its contents FREE 24-7 by visiting our website www.divenewsnetwork.com. You can easily share events on our web calendar. You can also subscribe FREE to our new “e-dition” of our magazine. It is a quick reminder that the magazine has just been posted to the website and to come read the updated version. If you prefer the look and feel of the paper version, we will continue to print that one too. You will have to pay for it, and the cost is still $20 per year. We will mail it to your house. The Women Divers Hall of Fame Tropical Dreams & Paradise Sunsets is this year’s DEMA auction in support of the Women Divers Hall of Fame Scholarship fund at DEMA 2011. Explorers Club Hosts Annual Sea Stories Day

or 24 years now the Long Island Divers Association’s Annual Film Festival has been a much anticipated highlight of the diving year, attended by hundreds of divers from across the Northeast. It is therefore with great regret that we announce the cancellation of this year’s event. Traditionally, the Film Festival has been a fund raiser for LIDA, with the proceeds being used to allow us to continue to promote local diving, our primary mission. These funds were raised through several avenues, including ticket sales, raffle and 50/50 proceeds, merchandise sales, and Film Festival Journal advertising. Tickets to the general public are priced extremely low, with an individual ticket costing $35.00. This ticket gets you admission to the show, an incredible bargain in itself, but it also gets you admission to the after-party, with an all-you-can-eat buffet AND unlimited beer wine and soda. As you can see, there is no way that we can cover the expenses on this event through ticket sales alone, or even after we add in the additional proceeds from raffles and merchandise sales.

This is where our advertisers come in... For many years now, dive industry professionals from across the Northeast, and indeed around the world, have stepped up and purchased advertising space in our Film Festival Journal, graciously making the entire event possible, because without their support, it simply could not be done. Unfortunately, the current economic climate which has caused so much hardship across this great country and around the world has deeply impacted the dive industry as well. We are confident that had we put the call out, the dive industry would have responded in the same exemplary fashion that it has in the past, but frankly, it was not a call that we wished to make. Instead, we would like to simply thank everyone for another wonderful dive season, and ask for your continued support as we carry on with our mission, promoting the world’s best scuba diving. eneath the Sea, the largest dive show in America, will present their 36th Annual event on March 23-25 at the Meadowlands Exposition Center in Secaucus, New Jersey. This event delivers almost 400 exhibitors and over 70 workshops and seminars reflecting all aspects of diving from travel and diving safety to underwater digital photography. Beneath the Sea celebrates local diving with Friday night’s Tec/ Wreck party after a daylong set of seminars introducing new technical diving equipment and a public safety diver program. Beneath the Sea also honors 2012’s Northeast Diving Pioneer. Additionally, all day Friday, high school and college students from schools across the New York Metro Area are invited to

spend the entire day at Beneath the Sea meeting with men and women who enjoy successful marine careers in the arts and sciences and with representatives from schools that offer curriculum of interest to them. Beneath the Sea’s Marine Career day is not just about talk; it includes hands-on workshops, seminars, and a scholarship application clinic. Beneath the Sea also gives back at the community level each year staging a fund-raising gala and silent auction in support of the Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital at Westchester Medical Center. The artist Wyland spends a day with the children at the hospital teaching them to paint. Each year Ocean Pals, holds a theme based poster contest for children throughout the world. This year’s theme is: Penguins in Peril; the winners of this poster contest will be on display at Beneath the Sea 2012, and their creators invited to be at Ocean Pals Sunday. ot every diver can travel to and dive the Galapagos Islands. However, just north of Boston, MA lies a little known diving paradise that comes close. The Isles of Shoals are a group of small islands located about 6 miles off the coasts of New Hampshire and Maine. The island chain was named by English explorer Captain John Smith when he happened upon them in 1614. There are 9 main islands surrounded by

several smaller islands. Five are located in Maine, and four in New Hampshire. Coordinates for the chain are 42 degrees 58’53”N, 70 degrees 36’41”W. Major islands include Appledore, Star and Smuttynose. All diving in this location is accomplished by boat. There are several charter operators who frequent this area departing from Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Maine. I really enjoy diving this area for several reasons. You are right in the middle of The

Gulf of Maine with all of the incredible marine bio-diversity she offers divers. On a single dive you can see colorful tiny Nudibranchs, all the way up the food chain to sharks and seals. You can pick your level of diving (depth, current, etc.) in typically very good visibility. experiences is diving with the many harbor seals who spend these months feeding and sunning themselves on the rock ledges on this island chain. It is illegal to approach, or disturb resting seals on rocks (this behavior is called “hauled out”), but you can dive in waters where seals frequent as long as you do not approach them. If you stay still and allow them to approach you, it is not considered harassment under the Marine Mammal Protection Act. Several years ago, my dive buddy and I were lying still in about 20 feet of water off of Duck Island in Maine when a baby seal no larger than about 2 feet long swam right into my video camera housing. He stopped, checked himself out in the reflection of the Ikelite dome port, then took off into the clear green colored water. It is 90 seconds of some of the coolest underwater video I have ever shot in my 33 year career as an underwater TV producer. Another favorite dive of mine will take you to Mingo Rock in Maine. This features and underwater pinnacle reaching up from depths of about 90 feet and hosts many classic species of Gulf of Maine critters such as Northern Red Anemone and Sea Peaches. This should be reserved for the more experienced diver due to the depths involved and potential tidal and wind driven currents around Mingo Rock. Large schools of juvenile Cod and Pollack have been observed feeding in the rich waters around all of these islands. You just never know what you are going to see next around the corner diving off any of this archipelago known as the Isles of Shoals. ■

Getting there isn’t nearly half the fun

On Monday, July 11, 2011, three MetroWest Dive Club members (Andrea Dec, Jim Guertin and Roy Mennell) joined four other divers on the Daybreaker with Captains Fran and Matt Marcoux. The day was hot and humid, but the seas were calm during the entire 45 minute trip from Rye Harbor, New Hampshire. Remember that the travel time and remote destination make for a pricier dive charter than usual, so expect to pony up a bit more money for the trip. “The trip cost $120, which included personalized service, lunch, cold drinks and water,” said Andrea Dec. “Plus a good dive briefing at each dive site.”

Getting up close and personal

The long travel time left ample opportunity for diver chatter and gearing up for the dives. Once the Daybreaker reached the Isles of Shoals, it was easy to see several seals in the water and many seals resting on the nearby land – a simple giant stride was all that was needed to get into the water. “We were in a range of 10 to 47 feet, and the water temp was about 53 degrees Fahrenheit,” Andrea said. “There was a bit of surge at shallow depths, so the best depth for that day was 20 to 25 feet.” The seals did not disappoint. Club divers all reported that the seals started off a bit cautious and kept a comfortable distance, but started to approach the divers more closely as they realized that the divers were not a danger. It didn’t take long for the seals to respond, and the interaction could not have been better. “A couple of the medium sized ones were coming up behind us and tugging on our fins gently,” she said. Andrea recalls the encounter vividly. “Then there was one large seal that took a liking to me and wanted to get face to face. At first he came nose to nose with my camera and then he went in an upright position and started to wink at me and twirl around. At one point it looked like he was smiling looking up at the surface. This went on for a little while and then off into the blue.” With such personal interaction, it’s a perfect opportunity for photographers to try their skills with the ambient light at shallow depths. “I shoot using ambient light with an upward angle on the camera,” said Jim Guertin, who also took many of the photos that

DIVE DESTINATIONS NE you see in this article. “If they playfully bite your hood, use your arm - not your fingers to brush them away.”

Seal-ing the deal

Seal diving can put a smile on the face of even the most hardened diver, but there are just a few precautions to keep in mind. Remember that seals are all wild animals in spite of their placid reputation, so it’s best keep your fingers close to the body and move slowly. “You really don’t want to spook the seals, so the best thing to do is get to the bottom or find a comfortable rock and sit still; let the seals approach you,” Andrea said. Also remember that patience and good judgment will pay off. “I have had

ISLE OF SHOALS some interaction happening, only to have a newbie rush in to see the seal and chase it a way,” Jim said. “I found that the goofier you act trying to imitate them, the better the interaction is. Also once you have their attention and ignore them, they may try to get your attention.” Where there are seals, there can also be sharks – especially in the height of summer when waters are warmer. Still, the probability of an actual encounter is extremely remote, and divers have little real cause to worry. The Daybreaker’s passengers enjoyed a pair of hour-long dives, and Andrea sums up the experience best. “If you ever get the opportunity to dive with the seals, it will be a worthwhile trip.” ■

Effects of Scuba Diving on Breast Cancer Survivors

The Professional Association of Diving Instructors (PADI) announced its support of a new study commissioned by Duke University Medical Center to improve the understanding of the health benefits of scuba diving among people who have survived breast cancer. DAN Diving Fatalities Workshop Available for Free

Divers interested in exploring the causes of diving fatalities can now download the proceedings from the 2010 DAN® Diving Fatalities Workshop. Hosted in April, 2010 by Divers Alert Network® in Durham, N.C., the two-and-a-half day program featured an international panel of authorities on diving medicine, training, and accident prevention and investigation, including cardiologists, epidemiologists and legal experts. More than 100 people attended the event. The volume of information produced by the workshop was significant, but curious divers can now reap the benefits of the gathering. By John Touscany n 2007, Boy Scout, Chris LaMarche had to find a project that would satisfy his community service requirement if he was to make Eagle Scout. At the time, Chris, a sophomore at Gladstone Area High School and a member of Boy Scout Troop 473 had recently become certified to scuba dive. His father and Scoutmaster, Gary LaMarche had been certified two years prior and was a member of the local rescue dive team. It was brought to their attention that the shipwreck E..R. Williams was in desperate need of a permanent buoy anchor for the dive boats that frequent the shipwreck during dive season. “Up until recently, the buoy line had been attached directly to the wreck.” said Chris in a recent interview. “that was damaging the structure of the shipwreck.” And the idea for his community service project presented itself. Chris decided he would develop a plan to construct and place an anchor and sub-buoy at the site of the E.R. Williams shipwreck. Great Lakes Shipwreck historian, Cris Kohl writes in his article “Top Five Michigan Dives” in Sport Diver magazine. “The three-

masted schooner E. R. Williams lies upright and very intact in 105 feet of water in the Michigan part of northern Green Bay, an arm of Lake Michigan. This ship sank near St. Martin’s Island during a severe storm on September 22, 1895, the crew escaping in the lifeboat. With anchors in place and a long portion of the bowsprit pointing the way, this wreck appears like it could sail away on its own hull very easily.” Chris’s first job was to get permits in place and the permits he needed had to come from two federal agencies: The Corps of Engineers and the Dept. of Environmental Quality, (DEQ). That took a year. “I learned the Corps of Engineers owns the lake bottom, the DEQ owns the water, and the Coast Guard owns the surface.” said Chris. While waiting for the permits, Chris and his dad, Gary began developing designs for the anchor and the sub-buoy. “Bob Berg of M&M Diving in Menominee, MI was a big help with ideas for the anchor.” said Chris. Eventually they decided on a rebar reinforced one ton cement anchor. The sub-buoy would be fabricated of

aluminum pipe and sheeting into a foursided box with large handles. And waterproof graphics would be placed on all four sides with information about the E.R. Williams, Chris’s Eagle Scout Project, and mention of everyone who provided support and help. That same year, Chris also presented his project at Ghost Ship Festival in Milwaukee and was awarded $500 towards the cost of the project. Chris also raised money locally to help cover his costs. Chris says, “I was able to get contributions to cover 90% of our costs.” To get the anchor and subbuoy to the site of the E.R. Williams out by St. Martin Island, Chris enlisted the help of the Coast Guard and the Mackinac cutter. “The Mackinac’s crane was easily able to lift the anchor onto the deck and later, lower it down to the 100+ ft. depth next to the Williams.” said Chris. “They have this incredible technology on the board that allows the ship to remain in one fixed place, in seas as high as 12 feet.” This also provided the Mackinac’s crew with the valuable experience of placing large objects on the lake bottom. Once the anchor was placed, Chris and his Dad, Gary attached a line from the weight up to where the sub-buoy would stay, 15 ft. below the surface. Then a surface buoy with a boat line was attached to the sub-buoy. This allows a dive boat to easily moor itself to the wreck’s location without having to drop and drag an anchor, which could cause additional damage to a shipwreck’s structure. When his project was complete, Chris received the Eagle Scout award and won Best Eagle Scout Project of 2010 for his region. Today, Chris is in his sophomore year at Michigan State and is studying microbiology. Great Job, Chris! Smart, ambitious young men like your will go far in this world. ■

The people who visit Alpena enjoy miles of sandy beaches and exciting water sports, as well as the Thunder Bay’s historic shipwrecks. For hundreds of years the Great Lakes provided a natural transportation system as our nation expanded west and because of this they hold many shipwrecks. The waters around the Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary and Underwater Preserve are commonly known as “Shipwreck Alley” due to sudden storms, thick fog, rocky shoals and steamship companies that demanded captains stay on schedule no matter the weather. These conditions led to the sinking of many ships, many of which have been well preserved, the deeper wrecks look as if they could be floated off the bottom, and continue their voyage. Shipwrecks in and around Alpena can range in depth from at or above the surface to many hundreds of feet deep. The Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary and Underwater Preserve afford divers of all abilities a place to explore history at his or her skill level. Called the “Sunrise Side” of Michigan, because it is located on the east shoreline, the area is well known for commercial fishing and scuba diving. Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary and Underwater Preserve is one of the country’s largest national marine sanctuaries in the nation and due to its status as a marine sanctuary, the waters around Alpena are teeming with a huge variety of shipwrecks and untouched artefacts; the Thunder Bay area is a diver’s dream. One shallow water shipwreck worth a look is the steel ocean-going freighter, Nordmeer. Classified

as a novice site with much to explore, it can be entertaining and challenging enough to keep the advanced diver alert. Carrying steel wire as cargo, on November 19, 1966 the ship ran aground on a reef. The crew decided to stay aboard until a storm came a few days later, making salvaging the Nordmeer too expensive. No lives were lost; the crew and her cargo were rescued. For many years the Nordmeer has been a frequent stop for boaters, snorkelers, scuba divers and cormorant. Many compartments and the engine room were underwater, but much of the superstructure was above the water, making it an adventure for shallower dives and birds alike. Years of weather finally took its toll, and the superstructure recently collapsed. The site is huge, over 400 feet long, and the depth can currently range from four feet to forty. Beware of entanglement and penetration, as the site has many twists and turns, that can be dangerous and deceiving. Another shallow wreck site is called the B.W. Blanchard, found in only 9 feet of water, was a lumber carrier, built by Quayle and Martine in 1870 in Cleveland, Ohio. The B.W. Blanchard, along with schooner barges John T. Johnson and John Kilderhouse ran aground together on North Point Reef during a blinding snowstorm. The Kilderhouse was later pulled off the rocks but Blanchard and Johnson stuck fast and soon went to pieces. Their remains are now intermixed in very shallow water easily accessible to kayakers, snorkelers and scuba divers. The site itself is more like puzzle pieces then shipwreck, which makes for an interesting dive. A novice or experienced diver can identify parts and construction of historical ships, while enjoying this shallow, easy dive. An interesting geological site is called the Misery Sinkholes, on the southeast side of Thunder Bay Island and the north side of South Point. This interesting shallow site includes deep fissures and cracks in limestone. Many thousands of years ago,

the limestone was exposed due to low lake levels. The sinkholes were created when chemical reactions between limestone and acidic water dissolved passages and holes in the rock. These sinkholes were covered with water, and are currently seeping groundwater to the bottom of the lake. These sinkholes provide for a unique fish habitat and an interesting dive site. Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary and Underwater Preserve is well known for some of its many deeper dive sites. One site, recently discovered by high school students doing computer research with the NOAA facility M.F. MERRICK look like it is an awesome dive, in 300 feet of water. The Merrick, sank quickly after a collison in dense fog in 1889. This site was discovered just this past summer when the NOAA and five high school students Sagnaw Michigan used sidescan technology as a learning tool and as a search tool, to find new sites. This was an amazing expierence for the studnets but also discovered a new, very intack, and very deep site. Even if it is too deep for the average diver, all you have to do is look on You Tube, and you can find the video from the ROV, the students and the divers, and see how amazing this shipwreck is. The site has an anchor on the bow deck, and the wheel is intack, as well as many other artifiacts on the deck. It looks like an amazing dive. Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary conducts, supports, promotes, and coordinates scientific research and monitoring of its maritime heritage resources to ensure their long-term protection. Archaeological and historical research conducted by the sanctuary and its

partners is fundamental to better understanding the region’s historic shipwrecks. With over 65 wreck sites already located and many more potential sites that need to be investigated. It currently encompasses 448 square miles of Lake Huron surrounding Alpena, Michigan. With wrecks in depths from 6 feet to over 200, numerous sinkhole and geological formations, makes Alpena a divers paradise. Publisher, Dive News Network ou know how you see a movie a second time and are amazed by all of the things you missed the first time around… my trip to Bonaire in September this year was exactly like that! Bonaire, an island located in the southern Caribbean has quickly become one of my favorite dive destinations. Bonaire, Aruba and Curacao all make up a group referred to as the “ABC islands of the Leeward Antilles” and are located approximately 50 miles north of Venezuela. Calm weather and waters full of marine life makes the Bonaire area a playground for divers. A yearly average temperature is 82 degrees while the water temp sits at a bath water warm 80 degrees makes the island an any-time-of-the-year dive destination. The reefs are well preserved and offer an amazingly diverse marine community and it is said that Bonaire’s fish population is the most diverse in the Caribbean and ranks among the best anywhere. Bonaire with its pristine reefs and diverse marine life gives the diver an opportunity to see the environment untouched and unspoiled. I couldn’t wait to get back after my first trip last November so when my daughter, Amanda, and I were invited back I jumped at the chance. I stayed at the Caribbean Club Bonaire this time around and I was not disappointed by the accommodations. Located north of Kralendijk at the foot of Bonaire’s hills and just steps away from some incredible dive sites this was a friendly and affordable place with full resort facilities. They recently added some new condos on site and they were great. On this second trip to Bonaire I was able to spend some time diving and once again exploring Bonaire. In September the coral spawn so it was incredible that we happen to be there while it was taking place. We dove with Buddy Dive Resorts and their contribution to the trip made it that much better. The staff is friendly and family focused making it a great place to take your family for a dive experience. The facilities were great and Agusto, the dive manager, and Paul, the facilities manager, did an amazing job keeping up. There entire staff was incredible. One of the really cool experiences I had this go round was the chance to meet the famous Captain Don. Captain Don’s Habitat is a world famous Dive Resort that was founded in 1976 by renowned underwater environmentalist and author Captain Don Stewart. His vision for the perfect dive resort is reflected in the design of the resort. It is water front with a world class restaurant on the grounds and right across from where I was staying at the Caribbean Club. I went over to get Captain Don to sign a copy of his book, Reef

Windows, a book dedicated to Bonaire’s Dive sites, and had a drink with Jack Chalk the manager of the tiki bar Deco Stop while I waited. What a great experience! Bonaire is a popular dive destination and when you ask divers where they want to go, often many will tell you Bonaire is on the list. In fact, 90 percent of the travelers who go to Bonaire are divers and over 80 percent are United States based. The island even has a seamless money transfer system in order to cater to US residents. I would task anyone traveling to Bonaire for diving to attempt to experience it all. There are some very interesting land based activities including hiking and historical tours. There is a Donkey Sanctuary where they house the generations of donkeys who were long ago brought to the island. In 1993 Dutch Nationals, Marina Melis and her husband Ed Koopman established a donkey sanctuary on Bonaire for sick, wounded and orphaned donkeys. The primary objective of Donkey Sanctuary Bonaire is to offer a sheltered, protected life to all the donkeys of Bonaire. It is a really interesting place to visit. So if you are looking for a family oriented place to dive and explore while meeting some of the most interesting people, Bonaire is where you want to head. My 12-year old daughter Amanda and I had a week we will remember forever. I now have secured myself a spot on the cool dad list. As parents most of us feel we have to give up our dream trips once we have kids. Margo Peyton completely changed that when she had a different idea 11 years ago. She decided to make scuba diving and travel, a family

affair. Margo combined the perfect ingredients for what we scuba parents, and grandparents, have been waiting for, a family dive vacation. In July Amanda and I packed our suitcases, stowed our gear and headed off to Buddy Dive Resort Bonaire with Kids Sea Camp. The week exceeded our expectations. Amanda made new friends from all around the world and I got to relax and enjoy diving with Amanda. The adventure included a full week’s schedule of events and educational programs for families with kids age 4-17. I even dubbed

it an edu-tainment trip.,education and entertainment all at the same time. One really fantastic component to the KSC week is each certified kid received a SeaLife DC1200 Digital Underwater camera. Margo says with her own kids the hardest part of diving with them is getting them to slow down and enjoy the dive. By giving the kids cameras it would help them focus on marine life and give them family memories to last. The kids get to take part in PADI courses and specialty courses offered during the week, such as; Rescue, DPV, Digital photo, Boat diver, Nitrox, and as Amanda completed her Jr. Adventure diver certification. KSC adventures don’t just cater to kids, parents have fun too. The Camp promotes an awareness of marine related issues, with a strong focus on conservation while providing a safe family friendly place to dive. I really enjoyed the ease of the jump off the dock diving with my daughter any afternoon at Buddy Dive. Calm clear water, teaming with big schools of fish, eels, box crabs and huge Tarpon. The week included, 3 meals daily, photo clinics and slide shows, night dives for kids and adults and marine art painting. It all ends with graduation and a poetry contest with great prizes like digital cameras, strobes and wide angle lenses. During my week at Buddy Dive, there were a total of 56 kids from ages 4-17. They are split into age appropriate groups; the largest group was the teen group which is exactly where my daughter fit in. The group is then divided into specialty courses. Margo told me that it is incredibly rewarding for her to watch the kids grow and become better divers each year. “I feel like these kids are a part of my family,” said Margo. “We have watched some of them since they were 4, 5 and 6

years old, now they are still diving with me at 15, 16, and 17.” The last time Amanda was at KSC was 2 years ago. I was pleasantly surprised, as was she, that she recognized many of the kids from her last trip. This made her trip that much more fun. Amanda had a great time making new friends and meeting other kids that dive. Before it was over they all exchanged Facebook information. She has developed a network of KSC friends to keep in touch with. The feel of Kids Sea Camp is amazing. There is always something fun going on, live music, tubing, slack line and sailing. Amanda got to do a drift dive, a boat dive and photo dives. I had a great time diving watching her have fun. She is now almost as committed to the sport of diving as I am. It has always been my dream that she enjoy scuba diving because my life is so much about diving. As a journalist, I am amazed at the process. I took a video of every segment of Sea Camp, as I went through and watched my footage; I began to realize the kids were great divers. They get the technology, using dive computers and cameras, one little guy even schooled me about using a digital camera. He talked about video editing and software and which were the best cameras; this kid was only 13 years old and he made me feel like an amateur. I can honestly say again, that this was, as the Kids Sea Camp tag line reads, “A memory to last a life time”. I am glad that Amanda and I went. I do think that my daughter 5-more-minuted me quite a bit conning me into allowing her more and more time to be with her dive buddies/friends each day, but it was time well spent.
