COMPANY. profile Would Ludovico Mares ever have imagined that over the course of 60 years his small factory in Rapallo would become the worldwide leader in the production and distribution of diving equipment?

Mares was founded in 1949 by former Istrian diver Ludovico Mares, who served in the Austrian Navy during World War I. Mares quickly became a small industrial company with a continuous increase in sales and never an absence of ideas for new and improved products. As the passion for diving grew around the world in the late ‘60s, the company expanded into the European diving and snorkeling market. Between 1978 and 1982, Mares earned an undisputed place as the global market leader in fins: today nearly all diving and snorkeling fins are produced using plastic materials, according to the manufacturing process invented by Mares. The company also rose quickly to the top of the regulator market, becoming an uncontested leader as well. Today, Mares has a presence in over 80 countries around the world and is internationally recognized as the leading company in the manufacturing of diving products

Over the past 60 years Mares has developed a total of four different brands to meet the needs for every person with a passion for watersports. Our well known line for enthusiastic scuba divers, the Pure Instinct line for demanding freedivers and spearfishermen, the Mares rental line for Dive Centers, and our Aquazone line for those who enjoy swimming and snorkeling. REGULATORS Advanced technology, innovation, reliability and safety are the right words to describe Mares regulators.

Years of experience in the design and manufacturing of diving equipment bring the most innovative and advanced technology to Mares regulators.

Examples of exclusive and patented technologies are for instance the DFC system in the first stages, which guarantees a stable flow of air at all depths even under extreme conditions. Another exclusive is the Tri- material high pressure valve which offers superior reliability.

All Mares second stages offer the unique patented VAD system which reduces the effort needed to inhale for natural and easy breathing, while the Mesh Grid system prevents free-flow in the presence of strong currents, without requiring additional adjustments.

When you choose a regulator, there are a number of different issues you need to consider.

For instance the type of dive: if you travel frequently to exotic locations, you

need a small, lightweight regulator, so using a technopolymer regulator is the ideal solution.

On the other hand, if you dive in cold water, it’s crucial to use a regulator made of a material with high thermal conductivity, like metal.

INSTRUMENTS In these past few years, Mares has turned the dive computer from an exclusive instrument for few to an easy-to-use companion for every dive.

Since the early 90’s, our computers have evolved and remained true to our fundamental philosophy: reliable, safe and user friendly, both in operation and in reading of the information.

The apex of this development is Icon HD net ready. With the new and exclusive Mares bidirectional technology, variable sampling rate and the proven Mares gas consumption algorithm, Icon HD now provides real time information on your breathing gas status and range.

The clarity and immediacy of the information are but few of the cardinal points around which Icon HD has been developed. Only by means of a TFT (Thin Film Transistor) LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) is such result achievable.

The color display shows dive information both numerically and graphically.

Colors are used to identify key situations and to differentiate fields such as depth, no stop time, dive time, ascent speed and more. The graphic mode depicts the actual dive profile in real time.

Icon HD net ready comes with a reprogrammable processor, which allows for any new advances in firmware updates and latest developments. For existing Icon HD owners, the new version 2.0 with its new layout is available as a free download at www.mares.com.

As all other Mares dive computers, Icon HD net ready utilizes the RGBM Mares-Wienke algorithm with deep stops, but it doesn’t end here. A digital compass with bearing function, map function for viewing an image of the dive site during the dive, logbook with graphical dive profile representation are just few of the many unique features of Icon HD. The 2012 catalogue introduces another incredible new item: the Matrix computer. Like its predecessors, Nemo and Nemo Excel, it boasts an elegant and unmistakably Mares design. All the rest is completely new. Matrix represents Mares’ biggest effort ever in the watch computer segment. BCD’s Our challenge remains that to maintain a position of leadership in technology and innovation. All models are the result of this inspiration, and are constructed with the utmost attention to detail both in design choices and in materials, comfortable and durable.

The big news for 2012 is the back buoyancy version of the Hybrid BCD. With its sibling, it shares the foldable backpack, the ultra-flat valves and the harness completely uncoupled from the aircell. In line with our company philosophy, this jacket is aimed at the recreational diver, but you’ll see some technical divers taking a closer look as well!

The first aspect you will notice is the comfort. A feeling of being one with the jacket; a direct result of the extralong, preformed and reinforced shoulder pads, which work in perfect unison with the exclusive Suspension System type cummerbund.

Modularity is another key aspect. In addition to aircell and harness, the rear and side panels are independent and can be removed. This includes the cargo pockets, the MRS plus weight system and the upper back trim weight system.

Once removed, what you are left with is a lean and mean diving machine!

Assemble it with the optional lumbar trim weight kit and you have a terrific travel BCD. The Mares BCD line has weight-integrated as well as non-weight- integrated BCD’s. It is exactly in this last segment that we introduce another novelty for 2012. Did you want to buy a standard BCD, but were wondering if maybe later on you would rather have weight integration? Wonder no more: the Spirit Pro and Rover Pro (Dive Center line) start off as standard non-weight-integrated BCD’s but can be upgraded in the blink of an eye to the full-featured MRS plus system. Once you feel ready for weight integration, purchase the dedicated kit, assemble it with a few clicks and off you go with your new MRS plus jacket.

A prominent feature in the Mares BCD line is the Airtrim system, which replaces both the standard exhaust valves and the inflator, combining them into one pneumatically-controlled device. SUITS Last year, with the introduction of the new She Dives line for female divers, we completed the renewal of the wetsuit line. This process culminated in January 2011 when, for the second time in a row, Mares won the prestigious Tauchen Award at the Boot Show in Düsseldorf.

Trilastic continues to be the guiding philosophy in the way we design wetsuits.

Intelligent placement of different materials of different thicknesses, combined with a smart choices of inner and outer linings, with the primary objective of maximizing thermal comfort on your dives.

Mares wetsuits are split into three main families: Extreme, Elite and Prime.

The Extreme line applies innovative solutions for maximum protection in cold waters (2ndSkin, Antarctica, Isotherm). Wetsuits in the Elite line are made of 100% ultrastretch neoprene and no detail is left unattended (Flexa).

The wetsuits in the Prime line are more traditional, although you will still find panels of ultrastretch neoprene strategically placed where they contribute the most.

Riding this wave of innovation, in 2012 we will introduce two new dry suits and the corresponding undergarments, in addition to several accessories for wetsuits.

Mobby’s, the well-known manufacturer from Japan, has long been a valuable partner of Mares and the results of this collaboration can be observed in

the two dry suits, Tech Fit and Pro Fit. Tech Fit, which is a diagonal front zip dry suit, and is manufactured in CORDURA®500D paired with two sheets of Tarpaulin type PVC. One of the PVC sheets is combined with fine Aluminium powder to minimize the heat loss. Another sheet is hot melt type of PVC to make the glued seal tape watertight. The end result is a three-layer suit with excellent durability and thermal protection characteristics.

The Pro Fit is made in High-Density Neoprene. As density of neoprene increases, so does its ruggedness but usually this decreases flexibility. It is no secret, recreational divers want comfort. So in order to meet this requirement, Mares by Mobby’s HD neoprene, increases the density to the maximum extent possible, achieving maximum flexibility, as well as extreme durability.

Both the Tec Fit and the Pro Fit are equipped with latex neck and wrist seals, Mobby’s ultra flat valves (Palm Fit design) and integrated vulcanized rubber boots. The suit comes in a convenient dry bag, within which you will also find the hood (with valve) and the low pressure hose. Ideal for both suits are the new Comfort 300 and Comfort 150 undergarments, thought through to the last detail.

The Mares offering is completed with the Thermo & Rash Guard lines. Ideal for swimming pool training, snorkelling and as first layer under a wetsuit.

FINS Fins are among the most representative, not to mention indispensable, products in diving. Mares has spent over 60 years improving them with passion and innovation.

The X-stream represents the culmination of these 60 years of research and development. Channel thrust, OPB, Tri-material construction, ABS buckles, and the new riddled foot pocket which eliminates the parachute effect.

When kicking, water flows between the sides of the foot pocket and the boot, then stopping because it has nowhere else to go. This causes drag which reduces the efficiency of the forward propulsion. The many perforations in the X-stream’s foot pocket allow this water to escape, practically eliminating this source of energy loss. Furthermore, the material is very soft thus comfortable, with an X-shaped area of reinforced material on the top to guarantee that the power of your leg is transferred to the fin and from there to the water.

As a result, the foot pocket is lighter, more comfortable yet highly efficient.

X-stream is a superior fin which combines performance with weightlessness.

MASKS AND SNORKELS At Mares, the synonym for masks is “LiquidSkin”.

The most important innovation since the introduction of silicone masks is Bi- Silicone technology. In all of the current masks on the market, the skirt is made of rubber, silicone, or another medium-hard elastomer. All of today’s masks are a compromise between the need of a hard material to provide support to the frame and lenses and that of a soft material to adapt to the contours of the face and provide a good fit. Until today, manufacturers have been forced to look for compromise solutions, since the skirt was made of a single material.

Mares Bi-Silicone technology LiquidSkin® greatly surpasses the current single material skirt technology. LiquidSkin® incorporates two different types of silicone into one molded skirt: a firmer portion for support and a softer portion for contact with your face. The support structure and the area of the seal around the lenses are molded with a silicone that is 30% harder than in any traditional mask. The section that rests on your face is made with silicone that is 45% softer and 270% more elastic. As a result, the mask is stronger and more stable than any traditional mask, yet unbelievably

comfortable and with a superior fit. In addition, the marks that are typically left on your face after a dive are mostly eliminated. OPB ∤ Optimized Pivoting Blade: Allows the blade to maintain an optimal angle throughout the kicking cycle, whereas traditional fins achieve this only during a small portion of the cycle. OPB produces a constant thrust, which minimizes fatigue and produces fluid movement through the water.

CHANNEL THRUST: Soft longitudinal inserts allow a controlled deformation of the fin blade while kicking. This channel shape moves a greater amount of water resulting in more thrust for the same effort.
