RENEWAL 2010 ECOLOGICAL DIVER PRODUCTS & EVENTS
Editorial In my last Editorial, I mentioned that we should stay positive. Again just think of diving as the “affordable adventure.” People want to escape reality. Other hard economic periods have already shown that diving is quite “recession proof” and the SSI figures for 2009 prove that fact. Scuba Schools International (SSI), the premiere education and business support company, continues to increase success! Within the first nine months, more than 10,000 people have registered for the FREE Online Training. More than 4,000 people have successfully passed the program and now hold their Open Water Diver certification. In 2010, all signs point to further growth and improvement of the services for divers. In the year of SSI´s 40th anniversary, 2010, several new programs for Dive Professionals will be launched. Divers of all agencies will be invited to join a FREE service portal with various useful functions, making a diver´s life easier. So we all have plenty of reasons to stay positive as the overall European figures of the diving industry are positive. Let‘s all stay focused and work on our general success! TRAINING 3. The importance of recording what has been collected.
ECOLogical Diver is an environmentally friendly rating created by SSI to support environmental thinking for Dive Centers, Dive Leaders and Divers. Divers should take care of our environment, especially the oceans. The SSI Ecological Diver program was created to motivate divers to play a more active role in marine conservation by participating in targeted training programs and environmental events. How to become a ECOLogical Diver? In addition to SSI’s General Training Standards, to qualify for the ECOLogical Diver rating divers should: A. Be certified in SSI’s Perfect Buoyancy Specialty or Perfect Buoyancy Specialty Dive 1 as outlined in the SSI Advanced Adventurer Instructor Outline. 1. Student displays proficiency in hovering and understands the importance of streamlining dive equipment.
2. Emphasis was placed on the finning technique and the importance of not disturbing bottom compositions such as sand and silt.
B. Certification in one of the following SSI Specialties (minimum 2 dives): Reef, Fish ID, Naturalist, Shark Diver, Reef Ecology Minimum of one clean-up dive: Student must be fully briefed before assisting on a clean-up dive by an SSI Dive Professional. During the clean-up dive emphasis was placed on:

Revised Total DiveLog System • The LEVEL 1-3 INSERT will come as a bound, 4-color booklet without tabs. The advantage of this updated version is that the customer receives more information which is useful at the dive spot for repetition. In addition to that, we have implemented pool log pages so customers can begin using their log even earlier during the pool portion. All pages are drilled to fit log binders and can be easily separated when upgrading to the Total DiveLog System. Besides the development of the new Dive Professional Materials, which will be complete from Dive Guide through Instructor Certifier, there are many other essential items in the works. Updating key components of our educational system are about to be released including revised student manuals, instructor manuals and Presentation Enhancement Guides (PEGs) for all specialties. There will also be launches and improvements released for different services on our website. All of these efforts will make you more competitive and more flexible, ensuring your future success. What this means is that we are working ourselves through thousands of pages of paper while inventing new concepts and ideas to commit and bond the customer to our wonderful sport.
We hope that you like the first visible output of these efforts—the revised Total DiveLog System. The changes are described in the following paragraphs:
• The GOLD INSERT is new and contains 50 pages with 100 dives. This insert will also contain three refill pages for the Equipment Service Program.
• The PLATINUM INSERT will be revised and modernized, but stays 25 pages with 100 dives – two dives per page. This insert will also contain 3 refill pages for the Equipment Service Program.
• The PROFESSIONAL INSERT will be modernized, staying generally the same but with more information.
• ALL OTHER INSERTS stay as they are currently. Please feel free to suggest any ideas for improving the Total DiveLog System.
• The TAB SETS will be delivered together along with the Deluxe Zipper Binders in future. The students will then have the full system once they purchase their Codura binders.
• The LEVEL 4 & 5 INSERT will be revised to 38 pages with 76 dives – one dive per page. The pages have become more user friendly with less for the Divers to fill out, more space for stamps and more areas for the Divers to log the information they want. This insert will also contain three refill pages for the Equipment Service Program.

RENEWAL RENEWAL 2010 Like every year at this time, the Renewal Period is rapidly approaching. Along with this renewal, we will also have an update of the Training Standards. We will be sending out information on the Training Standards update at a later date. Please use the easy SSI Online Renewal to complete this process. Your fees can easily and safely be paid with PAYPAL. Please note, all Dive Professionals should try to actively renew their status every year. Not responding to the Renewal at the given timelines may lead to the termination of the SSI membership which should be avoided.
Due to quality assurance regulations, each SSI Dive Professional must fulfill the following criteria in order to obtain “Active Status”: • Keep all personal contact information up to date. Optinally upload current medical and CPR & First Aid certificate. • Annual acknowledgement of the SSI Dive Professional Agreement. • Affiliation with an active SSI Dive Center or SSI Dive Resort. • Proof of Liability Insurance (in countries where applicable).
By adhering to these procedures, the SSI Dive Professional will receive the following benefits:
Renewal Fees for 2010: Dive Guide € 50.– net without VAT
• Renewal of the personal Log-In Code for the Dive Leader Service Portal with continued access to the SSI Online Services.
Dive Control Specialist € 75.– net without VAT Open Water/Advanced/Dive Control Specialist Instructor € 130.– net without VAT
• Permanent access to Outlines, Exams, PowerPoint Presentations and all Forms in different languages.
Instructor Trainer/Instructor Certifier € 185.– net without VAT
ATTENTION: Please note, the payments will be done via bank withdrawal on the 30th of November, 2009. This will ensure all members who have paid, will receive their Active Stickers by the end of 2009. You will then have proof of your Active Status on the 1st of January, 2010.

Renewal Prerequisits
• Each Dive Leader who renews before 31.12.2009 for 2010 will receive the new 2010 SSI Instructor Manual (English/ German/French/Hungarian) on CD. The CD will include all new Presentation Enhancement Guides (PEGs) for Open Water Diver and all Specialty Course Programs!

you that the Renewal for 2010 is due no later that the 31st of December, 2009. For any payments after this date, a Surcharge of € 20.– net without VAT will be added for the additional work occured by the accounting department. Please note that all Dive Professionals can still renew for 2010 with the surcharge added until the 31st of March, 2010. All Dive Professionals who have not renewed by that date, will be automatically set to Retired Status on the 1st of April, 2010. If placed on Retired Status, individuals may return to Active Teaching Status by paying additional fees and completing additional training dependant on the amount of time spent at Retired Status. We would like to thank you in advance for your assitance with the renewal process. The best thing you can do to is to complete your renewal by the deadline, helping us perform a quick and fluent renewal for everyone. We will notify you in December with a separate newsletter on the annual Training Standard Update. With this update, you will be able to easily and quickly trace the changes made to the standards. Along with this newsletter, you will also receive your 2010 Instructor CD.

NEWS SCUBA UNIVERSITY Scuba Schools International (SSI), the premiere education and business support company, continues to increase success for SSI Dive Centers! After the launch of FREE Online Training, all signs are set for further growth and improvement of the divers‘ services in 2010. The premier business training program, “Scuba University” has become known in the USA and Australia as the training solution for dive retailers looking to grow their business. Scuba University is designed to help Dive Centers keep divers active and satisfied. This unique program has now been conducted for the first time in Europe by Doug McNeese himself. Due to the overwhelming
success of a recent Scuba University held in Benelux, one of the leading manufacturers, SCUBAPRO and SUB GEAR by SEEMANN sponsored a SCUBA U Seminar for their dealers during the “Innovation Days” in Wendelstein, Germany. The attendees received many practical and easy to implement ideas to reach new levels of retail success in their businesses.
“Scuba U was a great motivator! We have already made many changes to our areas of customer service, product display and inventory management. There is much more to do and we are excited about getting it done,” stated Wolfgang Kirsch,
Tauchcenter Diving World Kirsch in Erlangen, Germany.
“The program was incredible! People were absolutely fascinated by the information, even with the language barrier. Dive Centers have already started implementing changes and having success with the things they learned at SCUBA UNIVERSITY. We will support the dealers with more and more seminars like this in the future to assist them to make their business more successful,” stated Guido Waetzig, General Manager, SSI Service Center – Europe, Middle East & Africa.
NEW CERTIFICATION CARD DESIGNS Beginning the 1st of January, 2010, SSI will release new designs of certification cards in nearly all levels. Most of the cards were designed to match the new Specialty Course materials. Along with the Specialty Course cards, SSI also coordinated the design of the Recognition Levels, Advanced Adventurer, Specialty Diver, Advanced Open Water Diver and Master Diver.

For all Dive Professionals there is also something new. All Specialty Courses in which SSI has materials, a matching Specialty Instructor certification card has been produced. Your specific qualification is not only visible on the backside, but has been added to the front side as well. Displaying your achievemnet like all other qualifications in the SSI Educational System.
