Hello New York District, My name is Daniel Ivan Lin, your District Secretary for the 2011-2012 service year. I'd first like to welcome you back from your summer vacation and hope that all of you enjoyed yourselves over the past two months. For those of you whose clubs were inactive during the summer, welcome back to another year of action packed Key Club fun! Though it has only been a month, it is important that you transition back into Key Club as soon as you can. As simple as it may seem, there are many things to keep in mind. First, it is important that your club submits paperwork. For those clubs that were inactive during the summer, it is important that you submit a Monthly Report Form (due on the seventh of each month). For those inactive months, because a club is still required to submit a blank Monthly Report Form, you still need to submit one. Second, for those clubs that have not held elections or have not been able to obtain the contact information of their club officers, please make sure to submit the Election Report Form as soon as possible. A deadline has been set for all Election Report Forms and that date is Friday, October 7th, 2011. Please remember to save the date! I hope that the amount of paperwork I receive will increase as the school year continues and that we will continue to grow stronger as a district with respect to paperwork! Remember not to forget these basic duties and that you do more than what is necessary! Remember that dedication, a heart of service, and a smile are key to Key Club success! Hello, I hope the school year is going very well for everyone! My name is Emily Gicewicz and I am your District Treasurer for the 2011-2012 service year. If you are irresolute about what a Fundraising Report Form or a proof is, you have stumbled upon the perfect article to inform you! A Fundraising Report Form, commonly abbreviated as FRF, is a form that Treasurers must fill out after every fundraiser used to sum up your fundraising. This form can be located under report forms on nydkc.org. The form takes two minutes to fill out and all you need to do is send me proof afterwards. What is proof???? I am glad you asked; proof is verification you did the fundraising you said you did. It is basically to have two sources say the fundraising you did. Proof can be a copy of the check from the money raised, letter from the benefiting organization, or an expense report. Email or mail the proofs to the information below. If you have any questions on what could be a proof or if you have trouble getting one, contact me. What is so important about FRFs are the fact that is gives your club credit for the fundraising and your club deserves that credit. You worked hard raising the money and now all you need to do is say you fundraised! A frequently asked question is if you have to fill out FRFs for due submission and the answer is no, it is only for fundraising. If you club fundraises to garner money for dues, then you would complete a FRF for that. Speaking of dues, you can start submitting them today! Keep in mind December 1st is closer then it may seem. There is a Google spreadsheet for FRFs and it has information on who submitted what and what clubs still need to send stuff in. Please check it out at http://bit.ly/ouqddP! GOVERNOR’S PROJECT Every new service year, we, the members of the New York District, are challenged to fulfill new goals and initiatives. Along with this year's District and International Projects, District Governor Domenick Pesce has specifically selected another initiative that Key Clubbers can contribute to on a local and District level. Last year's project, appointed by Immediate Past District Governor Nadyli Nuñez, focused on education. The project aimed to help spread knowledge to a diverse array of people from children to adults. This year, to put a fun and unique twist on the annually-appointed project, District Governor Domenick Pesce has created the initiative "Music and Art, within our Hearts" for the 2011-2012 service year. How exactly can you contribute to this cause? Any service project or fundraiser can count as long as it focuses on promoting the music and arts, two much neglected subjects during troubling economic times. You can create cards or artworks to donate to a local hospital, give a musical performance at a local senior center, or even donate to an art-based nonprofit organization. Almost anything you do can help achieve the Governor's Project! As chair of the Governor's Project Committee, I will be working with the rest of the committee to regularly release helpful suggestions and service project ideas via publicity materials and nydkc.org. All these resources will be easily accessible online, so please take advantage of them as you delve into the project this service year. DISTRICT PROJECTS As you start the school year and start planning the events for your Key Club calendar, I urge all of you to try and incorporate a District Project into one or more of your fundraisers that you plan to hold throughout the year. As of August, the District as a whole has raised a total of $31,671.79. With our goal set at $200,000, we still have $168,328.21 to raise before the end of March. We will never reach our goal unless every club makes an effort to fundraise and inform your peers both in Key Club and out about everything that you can do with these 10 charities. There are 9 amazing charities that you can choose from, that provide service, not including Local Causes. If you would like a list of these charities or would like to learn anything about it including contact information, please visit the district website, www.nydkc.org. Almost any question you have about any of these charities can be found on the website, including information about what is a Local Cause. However, if you have any questions about anything, please contact either myself, Nicholas Viviano, or the three other committee members including Kelseyliz Habla, Josh Hill and Stephanie Pena. Even though we still have $168,328.21 to raise, I am confident that we will be able to meet our goal. I know I have said it before, but whether it is a bake sale or a multi-club fundraiser, you are still making a difference and bringing the District closer to reaching our goal.

Hey All! I am the Lieutenant Governor Sean O'Connor for Division 19. I hope all of you are back in swing with your schools, clubs, and all the fun activities! As you all should know, Project ELIMINATE has been selected as one of our District Projects this year. Governor Domenick Pesce and I are looking forward to fundraise and raise awareness, in New York District Key Club, for Project ELMININATE as soon as possible. For those of you who don’t know, ELMINATE is helping to cure Maternal/Neonatal Tetanus (MNT). This deadly disease steals the lives of nearly 60,000 innocent babies and a significant number of women each year. The effects of the disease are excruciating — tiny newborns suffer repeated, painful convulsions and extreme sensitivity to light and touch. This project is a joint project with the worldwide Kiwanians. With the joint efforts of Key Club and Kiwanis, it is extremely possible to ELIMINATE Maternal/Neonatal Tetanus! What did Division 9 do during the summer? Besides feeling an earthquake and surviving Hurricane Irene over the summer of 2011, Division 9 got nothing to lose, and continue to serve for the community. We started off with a Key Club summer hangout on the last week of June. Along with members and officers from Division 9, there were many food that were ―grilled‖ and brought from various Key Clubbers. In addition, we also held our first eating contest on the Manhattan Beach! In the month of July, Brooklyn Technical High School Key Club held their second annual Coney Island beach clean-up and invited all Division 9 Key Clubs to help out. Due to the terrible weather in late-August, the Division 9 Bowl-AThon was rescheduled to October. In addition, Division 9 & 10 held an officer inter-divisional meeting in Mr. Gioia’s house! (Mr. Gioia is Division 9 & 10’s Kiwanis Committee Representative). Officers had a great time bonding with each other, throwing each other to the pool, and getting wet. The perfect sunny weather had even gave me a nice farmer’s tan! With a great summer of service and fun activities, we were ready for the upcoming school year!

METROPOLITAN FALL RALLY 2011 When: October 29th (Saturday) Where: Edward R. Murrow High School Time: 8:30AM - 3:00PM Admission Fee: $10 (Lunch is provided) What is a Fall Rally? A Fall Rally is a annual formal training sessions, held by Lt. Governors, to train their officers and members in their division. This year, Division 8, 8A, 9, 10, and 11, are joining together to hold a Fall Rally on October 29th in Edward R. Murrow H.S. If you went to LTC (Leadership Training Conference) back in April, the Fall Rally is like the mini-version of LTC. Not only we will be holding workshops to improve current officers, but as well as for members who are interested in running for higher positions. Not interested in running for any positions? That’s fine! There will be many fun and entertaining workshops for members as well! So attend this year’s Fall Rally on October 29th and explore the fun & meeting new friends / Key Clubbers from all over New York City!

According to JDRF.org: As many as 3 million Americans may have type 1 diabetes, a disease most often diagnosed in childhood that strikes suddenly, lasts a lifetime, and carries the constant threat of deadly complications, including heart disease, stroke, blindness, kidney failure, and amputation. JDRF's mission is constant: to find a cure for diabetes and its complications through the support of research.

Not only Kiwanians and Key Clubbers will be there, 250 builders club members will be at the parade as well! Take this parade as a way to advertise Key Club and show others your Key Club spirit!

Abraham Lincoln H.S. Key Club Train, bus, ferry, car were all means of transportion that brought 30 eager and enthusiastic key club officer to our summer divisional. This summer divisonal was very different from any in the past. It was for division 9 & 10 officers only, it was held at our fearless leader Mr. Leonard Gioia's lovely home in Staten Island, and most exciting it was also a pool party. It was a joyous and playful yet informative and productive afternoon. We had our meeting with Lt. Governors Helen Chen and Gresa Shala after eating a very nutrious lunch sponsored by Mr Gioia. After the meeting we started the music and fun, some put there feet in the water while others insisted doing laps. We then got water guns and everyone after that seemed to get wet. This divisonal was alot of fun and showed that divisional meeting can be fun and interactive if you just make an effort to come and switch things up. We discuss our plans for the upcoming school year on and how we want the keyclubs in our schools to reach new heights and show that divison 9 & 10 mean business. We want to hear our schools' names called at LTC and be recognized for our service contributions to the mighty New York district. - Submitted by: Ashani Hamilton

Giving back to the less fortunate is what Key Clubbers are passionate about. We strive for the good will of people who are in need of a helping hand. The Key Clubbers at Abraham Lincoln High School were giving back to the under-privileged people in our sister school in Africa. We did this Project at Floyd Bennett Field on a sunny Saturday morning with Mr. Mark Grashow. Mr.Grashow who is no strange face to our club has helped us do several truck loadings to Africa. We helped repack and fix broken boxes that were supposed to be sent to Africa. We enjoyed engaging in the week we had and had alot of fun. Its very important to give back and you don't have to do anything too big for that to happen. All small acts of volunteer work count in making the world a better place to live. - Submitted by: Ashani Hamilton

Brooklyn Technical H.S. Key Club

CONEY ISLAND BEACH CLEAN-UP On the blazing hot morning of Sunday, August 7, 2011, Brooklyn Tech Key Club hosted their second annual Coney Island Beach Cleanup. All summer long, New York City residents enjoyed the summer days on the beach. However, they left a big mess of glass bottles, BBQ chicken bones, and many other unwanted trash on the sand which is dangerous for other beach goers. While we were planning the event, we were afraid that it might rain and less members would come. But Key Clubbers proved us wrong! No matter rain or shine, about 100 members came out to help! Using stabbers and garbage bags, Division 9 members managed to clean most of Coney Island beach and the surrounding garden area. Even though it was summer, many executive officers from Division 9 including past LTG Tiffany Kwong came through to this event and got sunburned together while cleaning the beach. This shows that Key Club is all year round and it's always a good time to help out in the community! - Submitted by: Sandy Liang

Edward R. Murrow H.S. Brooklyn Technical H.S. Key Key Club Club TRICK-OR-TREAT FOR UNICEF Most people join Key Club in the beginning of the school year and that’s exactly when we starting giving out these cute little orange boxes to our new members. This year Edward R. Murrow’s Key Club’s wonderful advisor, Ms. Ortiz, is high strung on us collecting the most donations of all the Key Clubs in New York State. As one of Key Club’s most important events ERM Key Club stresses to our new members that it is imperative to participate in this and learn how Key Club’s service directly effects the livelihood of others around us. In our school and you’ll see that 40 % of the students are carrying around a little orange box and asking for generous donations. The reason this specific event deserves a Service Spotlight is because this is the first event most new Key Clubbers get to experience. Collecting for UNICEF sets a precedent for all the other community service projects ERM Key Club would like to delve into. - Submitted by: Anna Fong

Midwood H.S. Key Club

BUDDY WALK On September 24th, 2011 Midwood High School Key Club joined 3,000 other people in the Buddy walk, a walk celebrating Down Syndrome awareness month. 51 members of the club met at Great Hills in Central Park to spend time with people diagnosed with Down Syndrome. We raised and donated $150 to the National Down Syndrome society, an organization helping individuals with Down Syndrome. Before the walk started we had some free time to participate in a fun Zumba exercise, grab some snacks and enjoy time with our fellow walkers. We also heard some inspirational stories of people with Down Syndrome that fought against everyone and everything that put them down in order to succeed and make their condition, their greatest strength. Afterwards everyone gathered at the colorful blue and yellow balloons and walked for a mile, while being cheered on by cheerleaders and other volunteers. It was an uplifting experience and we can't wait to do it again in the future. - Submitted by: Rebecca Khaimova

CONEY ISLAND KIWANIS CLUB FLEA MARKET On September 18, 2011 key clubbers from Division 9 helped out the Kiwanis Club at the Flea Market between Coney Island Ave & Brighton Beach Ave. We helped the Kiwanis Club to sell clothes, shoes, and accessories just for a dollar in this flea market. It is amazing to see the elderly to be up in the morning to come to our stall to buy various items at a ridiculous low-price sale at 9am. Seeing the elderly rushing to buy the items at our table, spiked up some key club spirit to key clubbers by dressing themselves into skirts and dresses to encourage more customers to stop by our stall and a few ladies brought the clothing they were wearing.
