A LETTER TO DIVISION 65 EAST To my dearest Division 65 East, I had spent my first minutes as a lieutenant governor blessed beyond

measure. As I stood on the makeshift stage of the Rock Creek Church, I was moments away from tears as words that I can’t even remember flowed from my mouth. There weren’t enough words to describe how honored and grateful I was to the people in that room for entrusting me with the family that we had built. It was after those first few moments that something else found its way into my mind. A question that rang silently amidst the words of congratulations and good wishes: What if I could not be a good lieutenant governor? It is for that reason that since that first moment, I became determined to give everything to this division, from hours of what probably should have been sleep to nearly every weekend filled with either Key Club work or events, and everything in between. But this letter isn’t meant to be a call for appreciation. Not for me, at least. I would like to instead focus our appreciation on all of us, on Division 65 East. Serving as the Lieutenant Governor for the 2017-2018 year has taught me several helpful lessons: 1) There is no feeling both as exhilarating and fear inciting as turning in your reports at 11.59PM after telling yourself that you “have enough time.” 2) It is, in fact, possible for a fully grown legal adult to reverse cycle like a three month old baby, and, perhaps the most important, 3) Family is not determined by who you are born to, but by who is there to support you through thicc and thin. It is not uncommon for an Lt. G. to refer to their division as their family, but please know that I mean this as more than just a series of words that are strung into what appears to be a run on sentence that would probably murder your comp grade in cold blood. And even now, as I listen to loud music to the point at which I’ll probably be deaf by 19 due to the volume, I cannot ignore the other things on my mind. I seemingly cannot forget how, even at my lowest points, Key Club was there to not only catch me, but to pull me right back to when I was at my best. How, walking through the halls of an unnamed school, I was overwhelmed with the

amount of people welcoming me by name, greeting me as if I were an old friend. How walking into any and all Key Club meetings felt like less of a requirement to be followed with a report, and more like returning to a group of long lost friends. Giving me a home was not something required of you. It was never asked, never talked about, and yet, since that very first day, I have felt supported and loved beyond measure by a group who could have easily despised me. I will always be thankful for the love and support that you have shown me, and, if you will allow me, I would like to ask you all for a favor: Please remain the same loving, supportive, and passionate group that I know you all to be. Uphold one another instead of creating useless competition, or indulging in unnecessary gossip. You have given me the greatest gift that anyone could ever receive: That of blinding and overwhelming support. Be kind, and give that gift to others that come after us. Thank you all for everything. In Love and Service,

Julia Dayton Lieutenant Governor of Division 65 East, 2017-2018 Pacific Northwest District Key Club International
