Counterintuitively, the global pandemic ignited a major growth spurt Holidaymakers and real estate buyers alike identified the stunning desert-meets-sea getaway of Los Cabos, which combines natural beauty, ideal weather and ample amenities, as a safe retreat

Golf, recognized as a safe ‘social distancing’ sport, has always been a key driver of upscale tourism to Los Cabos It’s also a prized amenity for guests of Pueblo Bonito Resorts, who enjoy exclusive access to Quivira Golf Club, its epic Jack Nicklausdesigned course etched across a spectacular clifftop site high above the sea

As the destination has grown, so have Pueblo Bonito and Quivira Here’s a sampling of what’s in the pipeline at the most desirable enclave at Land’s End, where the Sea of Cortes meets the Pacific Ocean

New Golf Course

Quivira will break ground this year on a second Jack Nicklaus Signature golf course Nicklaus, the man behind Quivira’s flagship course opened in 2014, will return to build a second venue as per the development’s original 36-hole blueprint

“The first golf course at Quivira is a spectacular layout playing across a remarkable piece of property,” Nicklaus said, adding that the second course should be

“stunning and equally as spectacular ” The new layout will expand the golf inventory at Quivira Los Cabos to satisfy increased demand from three new real estate projects currently under construction: St Regis Resort & Residences; Old Lighthouse Golf & Ocean Club (to be managed by Rosewood); and the Alvar condominium development

While the routing plan for the new course has not been finalized, it will occupy a prime parcel in the northwest section of the 1,850-acre development Holes will be carved into rolling desert foothills and broad valleys thick with cactus, with winding arroyos framing or crossing the fairways. The southern portion of the course will offer panoramic ocean views Tall peaks in the Sierra de la Laguna range will serve as aiming points on the interior holes

The Golden Bear, an indefatigable workhorse with 400-plus design credits to his name worldwide, is singlehandedly responsible for placing Los Cabos on the international golf map His design commission at Quivira is another (and perhaps final) chance to burnish his legacy in Los Cabos, which he has often described as “one of my all-time favorite places ”

Antonio Reynante, Quivira’s director of golf, believes Nicklaus has a special design opportunity “At the original course, especially along the cliffs and in the dunes, Jack was able to create a truly unique golf experience unrivalled for challenge and scenic splendor,” he said “But the land set aside for the new course is more generous from a routing and strategic perspective Nicklaus and his design team will not be constrained by steep sandy hills, sheer granite cliffs and strong onshore winds He will have a blank slate on which to build whatever he feels the land can yield by way of a versatile, enjoyable test of golf.” Reynante added that Quivira’s second course will be a championship-caliber layout stretching to more than 7,000 yards

Beach Club

Created as an exclusive amenity for residents and guests, the $6 2-million dollar Beach Club at Quivira Los Cabos debuted last November. It is a valuable addition to a resort and residential complex that has grown by leaps and bounds over the past few years Serene and luxurious, the familyfriendly Beach Club features a large zeroentry pool, beach deck, hot tub, snack bar, bathrooms with showers and changing facilities, a fully equipped gym, a beachfront restaurant-bar, as well as green grass areas for special events.

Sports fans gravitate to the large rectangular bar, which features six suspended flat-screen TV’s Snacks, refreshing drinks and specialty cocktails are served along with extraordinary views of the ocean Day beds, chaise lounges and a fire pit are available for relaxation A “sailboat cinema,” with movies projected onto a canvas sail, offers unique after-dark entertainment.

The Beach Club is part of Q Life, a lifestyle club created exclusively for residents at Quivira Los Cabos, which offers a synergistic approach to individual pursuits and group activities With its comprehensive menu of programs, Q Life inspires residents to seek new ways to enjoy a healthy lifestyle while developing friendships with those who share their interests This holistic club is also designed to promote physical, cultural, social and intellectual wellness among residents while maintaining harmony between the environment and the community

Reconfigured Golf Course

The debut of the Beach Club necessitated the elimination of the beachfront golf cart path that led from the staging area to the former first tee at Quivira Golf Club It also required a reconfiguration of the golf holes

The par-4 18th hole, a classic links-style par 4 with an infinity-edge green that appears to float on the ocean, now functions as No 1 Faced into the prevailing onshore breeze, it provides a firm but fair test and a solid start to the round.

The holes thereafter follow suit The original first hole, a left-to-right dogleg with a sandy arroyo crossing the fairway 100 yards short of the green, is now No 2

One advantage of the reordering of Quivira’s holes is the fact that the par-4 ninth hole (previously the eighth), which plays uphill to a green tucked in a cleft of the dunes, leads directly to the Oasis, the club’s main comfort station It’s now a true
