Sumitomo Drive: The legacy of technology perfection

Mr. Chandrashekhar Paradkar, Country Manager Sumitomo Drive Technologies, Pune, India

Q. Please brief its journey from the inception & share some its milestones? The Sumitomo Group began more than 400 years ago when Masatomo Sumitomo opened a book and medicine store in the city of Kyoto, Japan. Over the next 100 years, the Sumitomo family developed a leading presence in copper refining, which led to the family opening the Besshi copper mine. From these beginnings, the Sumitomo Group continued to grow and diversify to become one of the largest corporate groups in the world. Even after 400 years, the Sumitomo family “business spirit” is alive in each of the Sumitomo Group companies. The core of the Sumitomo Group, listed below, consists of 20 companies who share the Sumitomo Emblem as well as many common values and ideals. Q. Please brief us about company’s global reach & what are the global alliances that has been made in order to out-front the competition? Sumitomo Heavy Industries, Ltd. FACE TO FACE

Time saving electrical CAD software

Mr. Ove Larsen International Sales Director, PC|SCHEMATIC A/s, Denmark AUTOMATION - electrical CAD software PC|SCHEMATIC has been a leading Electrical CAD software developer on the global market for 35 years, specialising in intelligent design and documentation of electrical control systems and PLC diagrams, pneumatics and hydraulic systems. The electrical CAD software PC|SCHEMATIC Automation is designed from the basic concept of setting you free to focus on the electrical aspects, while the program handles the practical side. Beyond the basic drawing functions, Automation offers you a comprehensive series of functions specially designed for electrical projects with IEC/EN standards. Documentation When you click on a component in the component vendor database, you automatically get a menu containing the electrical symbols for the component. By placing these symbols in the diagrams you also transfer information to the electrical diagram which enables the program to fill out order lists or files automatically. Integration PC|SCHEMATIC Automation can interface with PLC I/O tools, wire numbering tools, label systems, send files for component ordering systems, edit PLC data via Excel, import and export the standard CAD formats DWG and DXF, and update all types of lists automatically. Furthermore the program supports practically any database format, so that it can work with the database format used in your company. Our solution saves 80% time To make it possible for existing and new users to get started quickly, PC|SCHEMATIC - and its distributors - offers a consulting service, consisting of an analysis of the already existing electrical documentation. Based on this analysis, the optimal set of subdrawings, models and project templates can be effectively created.

6

| August 2015 | ENGINEERING REVIEW

This also has the consequence that new users can get started creating complete electrical documentation projects really quickly. In larger companies, this way of working might result in that just one single person needs to be pointed out as the main responsible for creating the company subdrawings, while the others in future almost only will need to create documentation by dragging templates and subdrawings into projects. Experiences from the industry suggest that the documentation time can be reduced by up to 80 percent. Why should I buy PC|SCHEMATIC Automation? People buying PC|SCHEMATIC Automation usually tell us they did it because: ● It is easy to work with, and is very flexible in the everyday work routines. ● The Module and Model Based drag’n draw functions, makes it possible to create electrical schematic pages extremely fast. ● We have an excellent support team, and you can get support via NetViewer. insight in electrical documentation standards, and we are active members of standardisation committees. We also publish the book “Electrical documentation according to standards”. This insight in the IEC/EN electrical standards is an integrated part of PC|SCHEMATIC Automation. However, the program is designed so flexible, that you can also use it for other standards than the IEC/EN standards. - Even for your own set of standards!

Intelligence on six legs The robot looks like a giant stick insect: Inspired by the insect, Hector (HExapod Cognitive auTonomously Operating Robot) has elastic joints and an extremely lightweight exoskeleton. In the six legs, maxon DC motors provide the robot with a flexible gait.

W

hen Hector carefully negotiates an obstacle course, it has an elegance that hardly any other robot can rival. The Biomechatronics research group of Bielefeld University, led by Prof. Dr. Axel Schneider, developed this six-legged walking robot using a stick insect as a model. For the design, the insect’s measurements were increased by a factor of about 20. The total length of the robot is roughly 90 cm – a giant stick insect. The project’s goal is to better understand the gait of these insects and make the underlying coordination principles usable for technical systems. The research team also wants to investigate fundamental concepts for controlling elastically actuated robotic systems.

The extremely light exoskeleton consists of carbon-fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP). All drive parts and the connections between the leg segments were designed and fabricated

maxon EC 45 flat (50 W) The brushless EC 45 flat motor drive delivers 50 W of power, at a diameter of 45 mm. The drive delivers high torque and needs very little installation space.

in-house in Bielefeld. They are made of aluminum alloy. The unique features of this robot, which weighs 12 kg, are the multitude of sensors with which it is equipped and its biologically inspired, decentralized control principle. With its specially designed drives and sensors, it can adapt to the ground conditions while walking. Hector is currently capable of negotiating slightly uneven terrain and overcomes smaller obstacles, such as steps, without difficulty. One leg – three maxon motors Each leg of the walking robot has three joints, so that the movements of 18 joints have to be controlled simultaneously. Each joint is

equipped with a brushless maxon EC 45 flat motor. These 50 W drives are custom units without a lateral connection board. The 18 leg joints are controlled using biologically inspired algorithms. For this purpose, the drive electronics and their controls are embedded in the drives. To make the drives elastic, special elastomer couplings, custom-designed for this purpose, were integrated directly into the drives. The research team needed a motor to deliver high torque while being small and lightweight. “The motors also had to be as short as possible, because the resulting length of the overall drive limits the leg’s range of motion, among other things. This is why we chose the EC 45 flat 50 W,” explains research team member Jan

Paskarbeit, who designed and built Hector. Basic intelligence Hector’s intelligence is still vastly inferior to that of insects. However, it already has to process complex sensor data for the leg coordination. Hector is able to walk independently and responds to obstacles. “You can’t deny that even an insect is intelligent, in a very basic way. Similarly, Hector also displays simple intelligent behavior. One of many important properties of intelligent behavior is, for example, the ability to plan ahead. Initial versions of a more advanced robot control are currently being tested on the system, with the purpose of giving the robot simple planning capabilities – making it more intelligent, so to speak,” says Paskarbeit. Until 2017, the walking robot will be equipped with additional abilities over the course of a collaborative project hosted by the Bielefeld-based Center of Excellence for Cognitive Interaction Technology.
