Shri. Prithviraj Chavan Chief Minister of Maharashtra
I
1 April 2013
am glad to know that ‘Engineering Review’ Magazine is bringing
out a special issue on the occasion of Indian Steel Exhibition 2013
organized by Ministry of Steel and FICCI in Mumbai from 11 April.
Today though the demand for steel is growing worldwide, in
our country it remains well below the world levels. There is a lot of potential for increasing the steel consumption in India. All the sectors
of Indian Construction Industry, including infrastructure and civil engineering, have witnessed a steady growth rate in the past years.
Foreign investors are also coming here with their projects. There is
also an increased demand of specialized steel in hi-tech engineering industries.
I am sure that this international exhibition will play an important
role in identifying future avenues of business & co-operation and explore new business opportunities for the beneit of Indian steel industry. This platform will deinitely help steel companies to develop their brand value.
My best wishes to this exhibition and also to this special issue.

on value added applications like Line Pipes, Boilers, Pressure vessels, reactor vessels, tanks for cryogenic applications and heavy construction etc. The company is also eyeing the high end steel segment by exploring the possibilities of producing Alloy steels rounds for API grade seamless pipes for oil and gas industry & Alloy steel for auto industry as per market demand. On the power generation front, MIEL is generating power for captive consumption and has set up a 60 MW power plant at Raipur & a 230 MW power plant in Raigarh. Monnet Group has gained extensive experience in setting up and operating power plants over the past several years. Therefore, from producing power for captive consumption, Monnet has transformed to be an Independent Power Producer through its subsidiary Monnet Power Company Limited. Endorsing its strength in this segment, the Blackstone Group has taken 12.5% stake in Monnet Power Company Limited. Monnet Power Company Limited (MPCL), the 87.5% subsidiary of the MIEL, is setting up thermal power plant of IPP of 1050 MW (2 units of 525 MW) backed with pit head captive coal mine in Angul, Orissa. The capacity is further being enhanced to 1710 MW by adding additional 660 MW at the same site. Leveraging the availability of the pit head coal mine, the Group has ensured availability of coal and has enhanced logistic eficiency of transporting coal from coal mine via conveyer belts. This has been of vital importance as it negates dependency of coal from domestic market and considerably reduces logistic costs. All these factors collectively have enabled this project to be amongst lowest cost generation units in the world. MIEL also has a strong presence in the Mining segment and

owns and operates the single largest underground coal mine in India. With the aim to reduce dependence on market vagaries and to cut down the cost of the vital raw materials for its sponge iron and power plants, Monnet has acquired many coal, iron ore and limestone blocks to emerge as a highly backward integrated player. Expanding its horizons beyond the country’s frontiers, MIEL through its 100 % owned subsidiary Monnet Global Limited (MGL), has acquired Indonesian Coal Company - PT SarwaSembadaKaryaBumi, in the Jambi province of Sumatra, Indonesia. Monnet Group also carries out extensive coal washing and beneiciation for its internal consumption as well as for other users, both in the public and private sectors. The Company’s services in this ield extend from concept to commissioning under a single roof, and operation of washery both in coking and noncoking sectors. “ At Monnet, we believe that a company’s path to success lies as much in its business and operational strengths as in its ability to think beyond business. Thus, at MIEL, Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is not just another initiative; rather it is the fulcrum on which its growth strategy is based. In keeping with this CSR spirit, Monnet Foundation, a Trust set up by MIEL, is continually engaged in taking forward the Company’s CSR policy. The Group is committed to bringing about a radical transformation in the quality of communities in and around its facilities in Chhattisgarh and Orissa through positive social upliftment programs covering Health, Education, Women Empowerment, Sustainable Livelihood and Infrastructure Development.” www.engrreview.com

support to India clients though Indian subsidiary. This decision is made to react much faster to clients, supporting in spare-parts and after sales and service activity.
CRANEFRIGOR™- Crane air conditioning units
The heavy duty crane air-conditioning units are unlike domestic mass produced air-conditioners. CRANEFRIGOR™ custom-made and serial produced. The reason is due to the risk involved for crane operator (Man) and crane (Machine) especially in steel mill conditions. To explain in detail, the temperature in steel melting shop is up to 90°C, extreme dust produced due to debris and material handling, high-heat radiation when the cranes are operated over the furnace, fresh air is not possible in cabin, crane operation dissipate heat in e-room or girders (frequency converters), strong vibrations and inally aggressive environment. Therefore, every unit tailor made to it the customer demand. That means the air-conditioning and air purifying are customised to the guidelines of the relevant authorities who ensure that the crane operator enjoys optimal work conditions. Additionally, the sensitive power and control systems are cooled which ensures the crane function reliably.
CRANEFRIGOR™ family :
There are various ranges of products for different applications. CRANEFRIGOR™ focuses on temperature range between 45°C to 90°C. The unit comes with different models Split type (V model) and Compact type (T model). Split type (V-Model), Machine parts (liqueier) and air conditioning part (evaporator) are set up separately. The air conditioning part is connected to the machine parts with refrigerant lines. The air conditioning part is situated directly next to the heat source and works most effectively here. A wide range of individual component combinations allow for an exact output adjustment. The heat absorbed into the air conditioning unit is dissipated with ambient air. Compact type (T-Model), the arrangements are much more simple and compact. Whereas the compact air-conditioners the machine part and the air-conditioning part (both modules) can be conigured in various ways. This construction unit system allows for simple layout and accommodation to their needs. The cooled air is guided through channels to the Crane Bridge or cabin and then supplemented with fresh air, drawn

back by the air circulation. The heat absorbed into the air conditioning unit is drawn off with the surrounding air in the machine part. usiness today is getting on a high track in the inancial market, where to get it explore global-wise, is an very important and essential ingredient in the market. Well, on the domestic front there has been an comprehensive competition between all the market players and market watchers in the race of business. To add will be an further advantage, that the trundle deals are becoming a part of our routine business and to give it a systematic and absolute publicity is an essential ingredient for every business freak, who is on its steeping stones today in the world of market watch. Well some of the major personalities in the business industry are icons and idols. These are the versatile personalities who are looked up, admired and adored. People who inspire others to push themselves to the limits, to perform better than they would normally.

Here the issue has been stretched to Mr. Ramesh Bhansali and Mr. Ganpat Bhansali, two brothers in arms, the debut launcher and the foundation stone, of their business which is well known by the name, of Sapna Steels. Moreover information about consumer awareness and preference can translate into business opportunity. Well, market trends today gives a clear picture of market positions and respects of various forces on the market. Here the light has been focused on Sapna Steels of which Bhansali Brothers are the helm of the company. Further a number of different reasons have been circulating for this sharp rise in the value of their persona. Launched in 1991, it is one of the hot spotted industries of the market today where the mystery of importing stainless steel items are carried on in an ininite number are revealed. The positive aspect of this industry stands with an outstanding feature, to feed the customers with the quality conscious materials, comprising with an era of various components as per varying to their needs. Further, they stand ahead due to many other reasons, which shows that they are really thrilled with the response they have got. the run of competitors. Highlighting their department of proile which is one of the major outstanding feature of Sapna Steels. Their proiles an compilation of various aspects that they are the stockiest and importers of stainless steel items, copper, brass, aluminum, which follows its link with alloy steel in pipes, rods, sheets carrying to plates, wires and so on. But, Bhansali Brothers are well aware that to make any signiicant dent in the market when pitted against many competitors, his team has to work on many fronts before making any tall claims and unrealistic projections. Well, at last they are immediately in a position to offer a more complete offering to the consumer and that’s all depend on several internalities and externalities at that particular point of time. Thus the industry not only balanced their initial on going trend on a good sense of positive spirit but followed it up with all the comprehensive authentic pursuit. But, at last, with an industry still in its infancy, one can only hope for the best.

A lump of Bauxite Aluminium : Global Scenario: Various analytical studies have shown that near-term prospects look decent for aluminium. There’s reasonable demand from the aerospace sector, and from the auto sector in North America and higher energy prices are also supporting the market. Analysts have also indicated that global aluminium demand is expected to reach 48.2 Million Tonnes (MT) in 2012, up 7% compared to last year. The increase will be driven by 11% growth in Chinese demand, as well as higher consumption in India (+10%), Japan (+5%), North America (+5%) and Latin America (+5%), though the growth in Europe will be lat. As a result, the global market is expected to be balanced. Currently, Accuride Corporation a

Indian Scenario : The three major producers of aluminium in India are Hindalco, Vedanta Group and the state owned Nalco, who mine/procure bauxite and convert it into aluminium ingots. These three together account for the majority of share of total domestic aluminium production.
Bauxite:
India is endowed with large deposits of high quality bauxite ore, amounting to almost 5% of the world’s reserves, totaling to about 3 billion tonnes. At 5.3 million tonnes of aluminium production, (expected capacities by 2015) these reserves are likely to last for 100 years. At 10 million tonnes per annum production, which India should reach between 2020 & 2025 our bauxite Indian postage stamp showing Bauxite, Chalcopyrite, Psilomelane reserves will last for (respectively aluminium ore, copper ore, and manganese ore) from India 45-50 years.
Power (Coal):
All Indian primary metal producers have captive power plants. Greenield smelters are also being planned, based on captive power generation, using coal. India’s 250 bn tonnes non-coking coal reserves (proven and indicated), are the fourth largest in the world. The stamp commemorates the 150th anniversary of the Geological Survey of India. Presently, Hindalco is producing different value-added products and services, namely, Fresh wrap aluminium foil, Everlasting aluminium rooing sheets, Permashield aluminium waterprooing membrane

sheeting, and Al Planet, an exhibition showcasing aluminium products for the construction industry. Hindalco’s foil business and packaging division (like Superwrap, Freshwrap and Freshpakk semirigid containers) delivers versatile solution to meet the multi-pronged needs of customers. It also offer packaging solutions to well-known brands in the pharmaceuticals, healthcare, dairy, confectionery, processed foods, personal products, tobacco industries and also serve the HVAC (heat, ventilation and air conditioning) segments with radiator and AC in stock. In future downstream projects, National Aluminium Company Limited (NALCO) and the Orissa government formally set up the joint venture (JV) company Angul Aluminium Park at an estimated cost of ` 75 crore. Nalco has 49.5 percent stake and the Orissa governmentowned Industrial Infrastructure Development Corporation (IDCO) has 50.5 percent stake. The park would host ancillary and downstream industries like coal tar pitch, aluminium luoride, aluminium conductors, aluminium castings, extrusion, slugs and circles. Nalco will supply hot metal from its smelter to the aluminium processing units in the park to ensure considerable savings in consumption of power. Similarly Hindalco would set up a ` 1000 crore aluminium downstream project near its existing smelter at Hirakud. The project envisages setting up of rolling mill to manufacture high quality aluminium lat rolled products (FRP) and cans Nalco and Orissa Industrial Infrastructure Development Continue on page no.90

World Aluminium Production Corporation formed a joint venture irm, Angul Aluminium Park Private Ltd for setting up an Aluminium Park adjacent to Nalco’s smelter plant in Angul district In which both ancillaries and downstream units shall be encouraged to set up their respective units within the proposed Aluminium Park. Nalco has loated “an Expression of Interest (EoI) on July 27, 2011, for inviting potential entrepreneurs / manufactures in both ancillaries and downstream category to participate in the proposed Aluminium Park.
Planned growth in Indian aluminium production :
The Indian aluminium industry’s enthusiasm to grow smelting capacity on an ambitious scale here and abroad - the wanderlust is that of Nalco - was not dimmed in any way by the adverse performance of the metal during the recession. According to sources, Nalco is working to give shape to three mega projects simultaneously, including a $4-billion

500,000 tonnes smelter along with a captive 1,250 power complex at East Kalimantan in Indonesia. Nalco is also pursuing a project of similar coniguration at Jharsuguda in Orissa. The promised access to 80 million tonnes of bauxite deposits at Gudem and KR Konda in Andhra Pradesh will also lead Nalco to build a 1.4-million tonne alumina reinery in the state. Hindalco has also got big things on its plate. If all its projects get commissioned on revised schedule, then Hindalco will see its smelting capacity rising to 1.7 million tonnes from 500,000 tonnes and alumina reining capacity to 6.5 million tonnes from 1.7 million tonnes by 2013. Meanwhile, Novelis acquisition has given Hindalco global leadership in that value added segment where path breaking technologies are in application. Vedanta has arrived on the Indian aluminium scene much later than Hindalco and Nalco. While it has made up for the lost time by gaining control of Balco and Madras Aluminium, Vedanta is aggressively building new capacity through greenield and brownield routes.
India to face major aluminium surplus by 2013.
Aluminium industry in India is moving towards overcapacity, since supply is likely to grow in excess of demand going forward. Considering that all aluminium projects would begin commercial production with expanded capacity as planned, there could be at least 2 million tonnes of additional capacity for exports by 2013. Fitch Ratings report recently said that India’s aluminium Continue on page no.92

PGE (Platinum Group Elements) :
generate huge employment.
The platinum group metals (abbreviated as the PGMs sometimes collectively refers to six metallic elements clustered together in the periodic table). The six platinum group metals are ruthenium, rhodium, palladium, osmium, iridium, and platinum. They have similar physical and chemical properties, and tend to occur together in the same mineral deposit. Signiicant quantities of platinum group metals – Ruthenium, Rhodium and Palladium are formed as ission products in nuclear reactors. With escalating prices and increasing global demand, reactor produced noble metals are emerging as an alternative source.
Gold
Global Scenario :The estimated reserve base for gold was about 90,000 tonnes metal. Out of the total world resources of gold, 15 to 20 % was obtained as a by-product during extraction of other metals. In addition, ground stocks of 34,000 tonnes of previously mined gold were held by Central Banks and 74,000 tonnes was available in the form of coin, bullion, jewellery and scrapThe world’s top ive producing gold mining companies include: Barrick Gold, Goldcorp, AngloGold Ashanti, Newmont Mining Corporation and Kinross Gold Corporation.
Indian Scenario for Gold :-
The only gold producing mine in India is Hutti Gold Mines Limited (HGML). It has reserves of approximately 600 tons and produces on an average 3 tons of gold a year. India may import 500-550 tonnes of gold in 2010. Deccan Gold Mines Ltd expects to start gold production by end-2010. The company is targeting 4 tonnes of gold production annually. Gold is also produced as a by-product in copper smelting.
98
Global Scenario:-
The largest reserves of PGMs are located in Bushveld Complex in South Africa. The world reserve base of PGMs is estimated at 66, 000 tonnes concentrated mostly in South Africa (87.5%), followed by Russia (8%) and USA (2.5%)
Indian Scenario :-
In India, appreciable values of platinum group of elements (PGE) were traced in the Precambrian maic/ ultramaic complexes in Sukinda and Nuasahi sectors of Orissa and Sitampudi in Tamil Nadu. Sampling of chromite ore bodies and their associated rocks revealed occurrence of PGE in these areas. There is

a need for application of state of the art technology and integrated multidisciplinary approach for exploration in the country. The demand for palladium is expected to rise as it is increasingly substituted for platinum as catalyst for petrol engines and to certain extent even in diesel engines.
Other Metals (Molybdenum, Cobalt, etc) Global:Molybdenum
Molybdenum occurs in nature only in chemical combination with other elements. A number of molybdenumbearing minerals have been identiied, but the only one of commercial signiicance is molybdenite (MoS2) - a natural molybdenum sulide. The world reserve of Molybdenum was over 19 million tones, located mainly in china,USA, Chilie,Canada, Armenia, Russia, Peru & Mexico.
Cobalt
The identiied world cobalt resources are about 13 million tons. The vast majority of these resources are in nickel-bearing laterite deposits, with most of the rest occurring in nickelcopper sulide deposits hosted in maic and ultramaic rocks in Australia, Canada, and Russia, and in the sedimentary copper deposits of Congo (Kinshasa) and Zambia.
Indian Scenario :Molybdenum
In Indian, molybdenum is associated generally with copper, lead and zinc ores. Rakha copper deposit in Jharkhand contains 45 to 48 ppm molybdenum. Malajkhand copper Continue on page no.100

Continued from page no.98 deposit in Madhya Pradesh contains 0.04% recoverable molybdenum. The total resources of molybdenum ore in the country as on 1.4.2005 are estimated at about 19.29 million tones containing about 12,640 tonnes MoS2. Of these, 1.5 million tonnes are in reserves category and 17.79 million tonnes in resources category. Molybdenum resources are mainly located in Tamil Nadu (9.97 million tonnes), Madhya Pradesh (8 million tonnes) and Karnataka (1.32 million tonnes).
Cobalt
The total resources of cobalt ore in the country as on 1.4.2005 are estimated at about 44.91 million tones out of which 30.91 million tones (about 69%) located in Orissa while remaining are available in Jharkhand & Nagaland. Cobalt associated with lateritic nickel deposit in Sukinda area, Orissa and copper slags are two possible secondary resources of cobalt along with sea-bed multimetal nodules.
Rare earth element :Global scenario:-
As per reports in Nature Geosciences by Mr. Yasuhiro Kato, Associate Professor of Earth Science, University of Tokyo, vast deposits of rare earth minerals have been found on the loor of the Paciic Ocean. Rare earths are relatively abundant in the Earth’s crust, but discovered minable concentrations are less common than most other ores. U.S. and world resources are contained primarily in bastnäsite and monazite.
100
Bastnäsite deposits in China and the United States constitute the largest percentage of the world’s rare earth economic resources, while monazite deposits in Australia, Brazil, China, India, Malaysia, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Thailand, and the United States constitute the second largest segment. Apatite, cheralite, eudialyte, loparite, phosphorites, secondary monazite, spent uranium solutions, and xenotime make up most of the remaining resources. Undiscovered resources are thought to be very large. China holds the leading position among producers of rare earths followed by Brazil, Malaysia and India. Rare earths are also produced in Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Thailand.
Indian scenario :-
In India, monazite is the principal source of rare earths and thorium. The mineral monazite is a prescribed substance as per the notiication under the Atomic Energy Act, 1962. AMD has been carrying out its resource evaluation for over ive decades. It occurs in association with other heavy minerals, such as ilmenite, rutile, zircon, etc. in concentrations of 0.4 - 4.3% of total heavies in the beach and inland placer deposits of the country. The resource estimates of monazite in the beach and inland placer deposits have been enhanced from 7.90 million tonnes in 2002 to 10.21 million tones. IREL, a Government of India Undertaking and KMML, a Kerala State Government Undertaking, are actively engaged in mining and processing of beach sand minerals from placer deposits. IREL produced 35 tonnes rare earths viz, RE luoride,

cerium oxide, cerium hydrate from conversion of rare earths chloride, in 2007-08 against 1,800 tpy installed capacity.
Future outlook :-
Though China is having only 37% reserves of rare earths, it produces around 97% of world’s supply of rare earth. Concerns have mounted about the supply of rare earths as its predominant supplier China has announced its regulation on export and it will crack down on smuggling. On September 1, 2009, China announced plans to reduce its export quota to 35,000 tons per year in 2010-2015, ostensibly to conserve scarce resources andprotect the environment. It was reported that China will “further reduce quotas for rare earth exports by 30 percent from next year to protect the precious metals from overexploitation”. As a result of the increased demand and tightening restrictions on exports of the metals from China, searches for alternative sources in Australia, Brazil, Canada, South Africa, and the United States are ongoing. Another recently developed source of rare earths is electronic waste and other wastes that have signiicant rare earth components. New advances in recycling technology have made extraction of rare earths from these materials more feasible, and recycling plants are currently operating in Japan. It is an estimated that 300,000 tons of rare earths is stored in unused electronics waste. As new technologies are developed, perhaps recycling may become the only source for such exotic materials. www.engrreview.com
