Innovative developments for safety at work SECUMAR presents new lifejackets and survival suits at the A+A 2015 exhibition in Düsseldorf, the world’s largest and most important specialist trade fair for all aspects of safety and security.
T
he theme of personal protective equipment and its compatibility is complex. SECUMAR can help and advise you by selecting the appropriate PPE for all maritime work at the A+A 2015 show from 27th to 30th October 2015 in hall 070, booth C14. On show will be the SECUMAR Professional product range including the recently newly developed GOLF 275 FR AC life jacket. This antistatic and flame retardant lifejacket (EN 1149-3 / EN ISO 14116 Index 1) is ideal for working in hazardous areas, for example on tankers, refineries, tank farms or chemical plants. With its GOLF 275 AS, SECUMAR presents a lifejacket, in whose development the special requirements for work at height have been included. The most hard-wearing life jacket can now be perfectly combined with fall-arrest harnesses. CONTRA 110 and CONTRA 140 - these are the names of new dry suits built to EN ISO 15027-1 by Bernhardt Apparatebau. The most important characteristic: excellent functionality coupled with high wearing comfort.
10 | OCTOBER 2015 | INDUSTRIAL SAFETY REVIEW
Gore-Tex® membranes are used for all suits. They have the unique property of preventing water ingress from the outside, whilst water vapor may diffuse through the material to the outside, making them much more comfortable to wear over longer periods. The various models differ significantly in how they work. The CONTRA 110-models are low weight undersuits which can be worn under any working clothes - so they are protected from mechanical damage and contamination. The CONTRA 140-models are work and survival suits. The variant CONTRA 140 AS can be equipped with internal fall-arrest harnesses according to EN 361 / EN 858 for working at height. Bernhardt Apparatebau GmbH u. Co. in Holm, near Hamburg, Germany, manufactures innovative products for the saving of life at sea for both the leisure and professional markets. Constant innovation and unrelenting quality control have both served to position the company as a world-wide leader in its field. For more information, Website: www.secumar.com www.ind-safety.com

The A+A 2015 trade fair and congress cover all aspects of health and safety at work – New record in exhibitors’ numbers Federal minister Andrea Nahles will be at the opening event
A
+A – the number 1 international event for health and safety at work – has now reached its 30th edition in Düsseldorf, featuring a powerful exhibitor base and continuing to head for growth. This year, from 27 to 30 October, A+A 2015 will have more than 1,800 exhibitors. For the first time it will occupy nine exhibition halls (one more than previously), representing 10% growth in booked space. Occupational health and safety and any measures to maintain people’s working capacity are also productivity boosters, ensuring that a company remains competitive. As the world of labour is changing, these are important issues. Demographic change is leading to an ageing workforce, and we can already see labour shortages in a number of sectors “Because of these challenges, companies have a vested interest in working conditions that not only satisfy existing regulations but are also safe and help the workforce to stay healthy. It is the companies that benefit directly from such investments,” says Messe Düsseldorf MD Joachim Schäfer. He believes that the issues and topics at A+A are becoming more and more relevant. The main focus of the event will be on the following areas: Personal Protection (e.g. personal protection 14 | OCTOBER 2015 | INDUSTRIAL SAFETY REVIEW
equipment, corporate fashion and image wear, safe facilities and machinery for the workplace), Occupational Safety (including products, machinery and services for corporate fire and disaster protection) and Corporate Health (including healthy workplace design, ergonomics as well as prevention and therapy models). “A company is only ever as healthy and efficient as its workforce. Modern managers pay attention to this insight and are increasingly showing an interest in concrete measures regarding corporate health promotion and preventative care. Regardless of whether the strain at work is mental or physical, A+A has a wide-ranging diversity of suitable information – at the trade fair, at the convention and through live presentations,” says Birgit Horn, Director of A+A 2015. In the special segment Corporate Health in Hall 10, for instance, visitors will find all the products and services with relevance to corporate health management, including nutrition, exercise and drug prevention. Also in Hall 10 and along similar thematic lines, there will be a special area entitled Workplace Design with best-practice solutions in the design of ergonomic working environments. This also covers aspects such as acoustics, air conditioning, workplace ergonomics and product economics. On each day of the trade fair
a live programme will be presented on a shared action stage in the two areas of Corporate Health and Workplace Design, featuring brief practical talks, presentations, debates and panel discussions. In addition, the special show Workplace Design will focus on products and ergonomic solutions in the office. One immediate neighbour will be the Health and Safety Meeting Point as a central port of call for non-commercial exhibitors, such as professional and trade associations, German statutory accident insurers and the International Labour Organisation. Action-packed live presentations and best-practice cases Exhibitors in Personal Protection Equipment (including Corporate Fashion) can be found in Halls 3, 4, 5, 7.0, 9, 10 and 11. Topics and issues of Occupational Safety (including special equipment for fire and disaster protection) will be presented to trade visitors in concentrated form in Halls 6 and 7a. Live presentations will be given not only in Health at Work / Corporate Health (Hall 10), but there will also be special action platforms in the areas of Personal Protection and Occupational Safety. The presentations will be varied and full of ideas and information with a focus on www.ind-safety.com

practical solutions. They will include, for instance, the well established theme park Occupational Fire and Disaster Protection (in Hall 6, in partnership with the German Association of Plant Fire Services, WFV), the new special show “Safe Rescue Operations from Heights and Depths” (also in Hall 6, in partnership with the German Federal Agency for Technical Relief, THW, and the German Life Saving Organisation, DLRG) and the A+A Fashion Show in Hall 11. On each day of the trade fair leading suppliers will present their latest collections here, particularly in workwear which has a major emphasis on fashion and has come to be known as Corporate Fashion. However, noteworthy areas will include not only Corporate Fashion, but also the entire area of Personal Protection Equipment (PPE), represented by just over 900 exhibitors. Even standard PPE is being designed increasingly with an eye to attractiveness. There is a clear trend towards closer convergence between fashion and functionality in this area. Even protective footwear in the highest protection category is now difficult to distinguish from fashionable trainers in leisurewear – thanks to fashionable colours (from bright blue to neon green), low weight and perfect fit with an emphasis on
16 | OCTOBER 2015 | INDUSTRIAL SAFETY REVIEW
wearer comfort. The same, incidentally, applies to all other protective clothing. Although protection is a priority, the various fashionable cuts are persuasive and their visual impact no longer distinguishes such clothes from trendy outdoor items. The partner country: South Korea The partner country of A+A 2015 will be South Korea – “Not only does the country pursue an ambitious sociopolitical agenda in seeking to implement safe and productive workplaces within its own borders. It is also seen by experts as a pioneer in preventative health and safety precautions and is committed to numerous projects supported by the International Labour Organisation (ILO) in other countries within the region, e.g. in Myanmar.” With an overall workforce of 24 million and thus potential users of PPE and other occupational health and safety solutions, the South Korean market is also considered to be highly attractive for suppliers. Extensive and international – the convention programme Another integral part of A+A, in addition to the trade fair and its theme parks, will be the international A+A Congress. There will be just over 60 series of events, covering health,
safety and ergonomics. The international programme (with German/ English interpreting) will feature, for instance, occupational diseases, personal protection equipment, green jobs and preventative healthcare, training and qualifications as well as testing and certification. The main target group of A+A includes experts in occupational health and safety and in safety management, specialist retailers, HR managers, buyers from industry, company doctors, owners of small businesses, staff councils, works councils, firefighters, relief workers and the police force. A+A started in 1954 as an event for “Occupational Health and Safety + Occupational Healthcare” and is held at two-year intervals. In 2013 it recorded over 63,000 visitors. This year’s A+A will also feature a major celebrity from Berlin: Ms. Andrea Nahles, the Federal German Employment and Social Affairs Minister, who will be coming to the opening event on 27 October, thus underlining the significance of A+A topics and issues at the highest political level.

HID Global enables thinner, more flexible & secure e-Passports News Highlights: • Extends offering with one of industry’s thinnest polycarbonate datapages at 600µm, enabling slimmer, more flexible e-passport booklets or additional security layers on both sides of the datapage to prevent duplication. • Leverages technology used in the award-winning Irish e-passport program, where HID Global received international recognition for its datapage durability, reliability and flexibility. • HID Global will showcase its new thin datapage offering at the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Machine Readable Travel Documents (MRTD) Conference later this month.
H
ID Global®, a worldwide leader in secure identity solutions, has extended itsfamily of secure polycarbonate (PC) electronic datapages that are the heart of high-security e-passports. Available in both standard (800µm) and thin (600µm) versions, the datapages are among the industry’s thinnest and enable governments to issue slimmer e-passports or add security layers on each datapage side to make them virtually impossible to forge. The company’s thin datapages include its patented crack-prevention feature that extends datapage life when incorporating RFID chips. Security is enhanced through HID Global’s proven counterfeit-resistant hinge technology plus a choice of additional security features, such as laser engraving to reduce incidents of tampering and fraud. Easily customized with unique antenna designs, the datapages are available with a choice of contactless e-passport integrated circuits (ICs) from leading chip suppliers. They also support all passport manufacturing equipment and other formats, upon request. Datapage artwork can be customized for local, regional and national design requirements. “As the leading independent provider of complete secure contactless polycarbonate datapages, HID Global is committed to giving governments the most secure datapage options possible for their e-passport programs,”
38 | OCTOBER 2015 | INDUSTRIAL SAFETY REVIEW
said Rob Haslam, vice president of Government ID Solutions with HID Global. “E-passport demand continues to grow and we are now one of the few suppliers in the world to now offer a thin datapage along with everything else required for a complete solution that ensures the best possible experience for travelers carrying identification documents.” According to market research firm Technavio, the global e-passport and e-visa market is expected to grow at a compounded annual growth rate (CAGR) of 30.17 percent from 2014 to 2019. Unlike traditional passports, e-passports include an IC housed in the back cover or in the datapage. Data stored on this IC is also visually displayed on the passport’s datapage, and the two are compared with each other and the traveler for secure identification. Secure contactless smart card technology protects citizens’ personal information and provides increased security for the passport document, with multiple security layers on each side of the datapage for optimum protection against duplication. HID Global datapages fully comply with ICAO standards and have recently been recognized for their valuable benefits in the award-winning Irish e-passport program. The only supplier to create a complete solution in-house including inlays, HID Global also offers the industry’s highest levels of datapage configuration flexibility,

in the presence of over 100 electronics dealers from the city. At the ceremonial ribbon cutting, Zebion’s Director Abhishek Lodha said, “Even today, specialized security stores are rare. Most security product vendors retail through generic IT stores, or through systems integrators who seldom have a permanent base. We decided to launch this dedicated Security Shoppe because we wanted to provide the public a central hub, a one-stop shop, where they could have all their security concerns addressed and find specialist advice on all matters related to security”. Zebion purports that whether it is a villa, apartment, apartment complex, Mall, hospital, government building, public place or college campus, it is essential for all property owners and residents to do a professional audit

to bolster security. Dey further added“not all solutions are complicated nor are they expensive - sometimes it can be as simple as having better lighting outside your villa or a better locking device which permits access based on biometric profile. Our SampoornaSuraksha concept has solutions for different types of building, budget and requirement”. According to franchise partner, Mahavir Jain, “Zebion has a whole gamut of security products and devices. No one has a range that is quite as wide and deep as ours. We are equipped to address all possible needs in the sphere of IP surveillance, cost effective video surveillance, biometric access control, intrusion defense, security accessories and much more.” Zebion sees the unveiling of the Security Shoppe as a landmark step and plans to launch several security stores nationally. According to Abhinandan “These stores are not simply retail points for security hardware; rather they are solution and demonstration centers where consultants can offer proficient and integrated solutions for properties and premises irrespective of size or complexity. After all when it comes to safety, there can be no loose ends”. Meanwhile in Chennai, scores of consumers and traders have thronged the Security Shoppe from the word go and franchisees have declared a record rise in enquiries and footfall. In times of growing security concerns among citizens, Zebion has highlighted the need for specialist security centers. In fact, they have already earmarked more Dedicated Security Stores in Tamil Nadu, as well as nearby Kerala, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh.

56 | OCTOBER 2015 | INDUSTRIAL SAFETY REVIEW
1.0 INTRODUCTION Tank loading is a common activity in petroleum and chemical industry. Most of the tanker loading and unloading activities in the country are done manually. However, it was observed that by and large loading and unloading activities are being carried out in the country by ignoring many safety norms, especially in the northern regions of the country. Though the Manufacture, Storage and Import of Hazardous Chemical Rules, 1989, framed under the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986, and the Motor Vehicles Act,1988, and the Central Motor Vehicles Rules 1989, have laid down many safety provisions relating to the handling and transport of liquid chemicals, many of the transporters, drivers and supervisors, does not bother to fulfill the basic statutory requirements to be complied with while undertaking the loading and unloading operations. It was also observed that many drivers of the tankers are not even aware of the safety provisions to be complied with during the loading and unloading operations or on transport. These ignorance have caused many accidents and some of them are even resulted in fatal injuries. This article will focus on the safe operation of loading and unloading of hazardous chemicals in tankers / trucks. 2.0 STATUTORY PROVISIONS The minimum statutory provisions to be met while loading and unloading operations can be listed below: 1. The tank car validity certificate issued by the RTO shall be kept in the driver’s cabin.
2.
3.
4.
5.
6.
7. 8.
The driver of the tanker should possess a Hazardous Cargo Certificate, which should be placed in the driver’s cabin for verification. Hazardous Chemical Code Label, popularly known as HAZCHEM Code should be affixed on all the three sides of tanker (2 sides and back) A label depicting the Chemical Class should be affixed on the front side of the tanker. A copy of the Transport Emergency Card, popularly known as TREMcard, for the chemical to be carried, should be kept in the driver’s cabin. A copy of the Material Safety Data Sheet, popularly known as MSDS for the chemical to be transported should be kept in the driver’s cabin. A First Aid Box shall be placed in the driver’s cabin. A fire extinguisher should be kept in the driver’s cabin.
3.0 SAFE PROCEDURES TO BE FOLLOWED While loading and unloading of liquid chemicals, the following safe procedures are to be followed: 1. Tankers used for the transportation of liquid chemicals and petroleum products should be steel tanks mounted on a truck chassis. All tankers that are to be located with petrochemicals should confirm strictly, to the constructional features laid down or appropriate statutory norms and certifications from concerned authority. www.ind-safety.com

Move the tankers to the weigh bridge and record the weight of empty tanker. Tankers can be filled either from the bottom or from top. In most of the cases filling is done from the top. When the tanker is stationed at the filling bay, it must be ensured that all the four wheels are on the horizontal portion of the bay and that the tyre pressures of the tankers are in order. Ensure that the tanker is equipped with spark arrestors. Before starting loading operations, the tanker should be stopped on a level ground and hand breaks must be set securely and all other reasonable precautions to be taken, such as, installing tyre chokes at the front/rear wheels of the tankerto prevent motion of the tanker during the loading process (See Fig 1). This will positively ensure that the tanker will not move. During the loading operations, the driver should not be inside the tanker, but he should be available in the vicinity, so that in case of emergency, he can move the vehicle out. During the loading operation, the engine of the tanker should be

stopped and ignition key should be removed and kept with the driver. However, it should be ensured that no one should be inside the cabin of the tanker. Connect the bonding and earth connector points on top and bottom of tanker at the gantry. Always use a suitable crocodile clip for such earth connection and ensure that the paint coating on the tanker body does not disturb earth connections (See Fig 2).

The operator shall be not load any tanker, which is leaking or is in an unsafe condition. If there is any doubt about the condition of the tanker, it should be reported to the supervisor immediately. 10. Ensure that the bottom valves are closed, before the commencement of filling operations. Open the master valve of the tanker. 11. Place the drop pipe of the loading arm or hose properly into the fill pipe of the tanker or till it reaches near the bottom of the tanker. It may be kept in mind that it is preferable to use loading arm instead of hose. 12. Start the filling at slow rate for a short while, so that the fill pipe in the tank compartment get immersed in the product.
18.
Thereafter the filling rate can be increased. Ensure that appropriate personnel protection equipment, such as respirators, gloves, chemical safety goggles, etc. should be used, depending upon the nature of product. Keep the dip pipe in contact with loading hatch, so as to protect against static electricity. Ensure that the no mechanical repairs or adjustments shall be made to the tanker, while loading operation is in progress. Ensure that the leakage and spillage does not take place while disconnecting loading arms or hose pipes and also while changing them from one compartment to another. Keep a close watch and never overfill and allow the tanker to overflow, which will create a dangerous situation. The quantity to be loaded in the tanker can be determined by dip rod manually or by a positive displacement meter. Make sure filling of each compartment is done to correct dip. Standing on top of the tankers without harness may pose potential fall & injury (See Fig 3).

19. After completing filling operation, remove the loading assembly and return it to its original place, close the fill pipe, dip point and master valve. Care should be taken to avoid spillage. 20. Remove the bonding and earth connection at top and bottom of the tanker and the tyre chokes placed in front/back of the vehicles. 21. The tanker can now be started and the tanker be moved from the filling bay. However, it should be ensured that the immediate area is free of flammable liquids / vapors. 22. As Acids and Caustics are highly corrosive chemicals, contact with any parts of the body should be avoided. 23. Wear acid suits by technicians unloading the tankers containing acids and caustics. 24. Provide safety showers and eye wash fountains near unloading area of acids and caustics. 25. Open the blind flange on the tanker / truck carrying acids and

caustics, standing aside with caution and then connect the hose. Before starting unloading operations of acids and caustics wear appropriate personnel protective equipment such as, PVC pant, rubber gumboots, hat with face shields, etc. Be alert during unloading for any leaks that may spring from hose (See Fig 4). After unloading of acids or caustics is complete, shut the valves on both the tanker / truck and unloading pump / line tight. Fix the blind flange on tanker / truck / hose. If any acids or caustics drops have been fallen, the area should be flushed away with plenty of water. In case of any acid/caustic splash on any part of the body of the technician or supervisor, immediately get under safety shower and eye wash fountain, remove contaminated clothing and thoroughly wash with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes, then report to physician immediately.
4.0 CONCLUSION Although there are many rules and regulations relating to the safe operation of loading and unloading of hazardous chemicals, these rules have not been followed rather ignored by those who are involved in these operations. Lack of awareness amongst the drivers and the transporters were also observed, which resulted in many accidents in the country. Gas Leak Detection & Fire Suppression for High Rise Buildings - Household & Commercial Applications By - Nitin Joshi, (Managing Director, Realty Automation & Security Systems Pvt. Ltd.) 1. Introduction In India high rise buildings are becoming very common in Mumbai and other developed cities. It is not easy to access various residences hotels or offices inside the buildings in case of accidents. So Safety, Security, Surveillance & Automation are basic requirements of such buildings. Use of LPG (Liquefied Petroleum Gas) or PNG (Piped Natural Gas) has been widespread in India. Even rural houses use LPG as a fuel for daily cooking. The recent discovery of gas in the Godavari basin has made the natural gas available in abundant in India. Gas pipelines are being led across our country to take this to homes and factories. Gas works out to be much cheaper fuel than electricity for cooking & heating applications. Gas Geysers are much cheaper than electrical geysers. At the same time fuel gas poses a risk of fire and explosion if it is not handled properly. High number of incidences of gas leaks and subsequent accidents have caused great amount of loss to the property and life. Insufficient burning of the fuel gas is a cause of Carbon Monoxide generation. Carbon Monoxide (CO) is one of the most hazardous gas for human being. It is odourless and affects directly the nervous system. In case of the Gas Geysers, for some reason if fuel gas does not burn properly due to lack of Oxygen, it will contaminate air inside bathrooms with CO causing unconsciousness and subsequent deaths. To avoid such accidents it is important to warn the user of possible accidents. “Vighnaharta Security” is an indigenous manufacturer of various types of 64 | OCTOBER 2015 | INDUSTRIAL SAFETY REVIEW
gas leak detectors for domestic use. Improving the quality of air is also requirement of modern home. Advanced building management systems monitor level of CO2 and VOC (Volatile Organic Compounds) in the air. Sensors play a major role in improving quality of air. There are also other causes of fires. One of them is electrical fires due to short circuits in electrical distribution panels. Effective fire suppression system needs to be installed to sense and curb such fires. There is another very interesting product which is used by high rise buildings to save electricity. “Vighnaharta A3S” manufactures ecoLuz. It is sensor light switch. It switches ON the lights when needed and puts off when not required. 2. Recent incidences of accidents caused due to Gas Leak in homes. Several accidents have been reported in western part of India in last few years. Since the author resides in this part references are mostly from the Mumbai and Pune region. However since use of LPG & PNG is pan India, they are generic in nature. On 5th June 2010, in the wee hours of the morning, rocked the neighborhood of Tarade Colony of Pune with a loud explosion. Walls of two flats came down crashing. In this mishap three people died. In one of these flats gas leak filled the gas throughout the night. When the electrical switch was made ON early morning, it caused sparking and subsequent explosion. This was so powerful that wall between two flats and outer walls were destroyed. Similar incidence took place in Mumbai at Dadar on 26th Aug 2009.
Senior Lady who returned home early morning from her daughter’s place tried to lit the gas stove. She had a piped gas connection which had turned faulty. It leaked the gas over the night and filled the gas. Piped gas uses methane which is odourless. Explosion had the same effect as the case in Pune. Lady died and lot of damage to neighbouring property happened. There are several such incidences reported all over India. Sometimes back another story hit the newspapers. A newly married NRI who was visiting Punjab fail unconscious & subsequently died in the bathroom when Carbon Monoxide (CO) was generated by insufficient burning of LPG in the LPG Geyser. Many cases have been reported of falling unconscious due to excess exposure to CO. 3. Problem Analysis & Solutions LPG can leak due to various reasons. Faulty coupling, faulty gas stove or rubber tube can cause the same. Sometimes people (especially senior citizens) can turn ON the gas stove knob and forget to light it. Since LPG is heavier than air it settles down and fills the surrounding like a liquid. In case of PNG, it goes up in the air as it is lighter. It is also odourless. When the gas concentration
www.ind-safety.com
FIRE INDUSTRY » Tech Update
rises above approx. 2% in the air, it becomes explosive. This level is called as Lower Explosive Limit (LEL). It is important to sense and issue warning well in advance. It is highly recommended that such warning level should be about 10% of LEL. The warning can be issued in form of loud sound or visual indication. Modern devices like GSM auto dialer can also send warning on mobile phones in form of voice message or SMS. Gas detectors can send signal to video door phones, home automation systems etc. They can also turn off the gas valve to cut off the gas supply. Commercial grade or Industrial grade detectors are installed near LPG Cylinder Banks which are used to supply piped gas inside high rise buildings. Usually cylinder banks or large LPG bullets are installed at the basement or terrace of the high rise building. If gas leak happens it could be extremely dangerous. The explosion can cause serious damage to the building and also become source for fire. Due to life safety hazards. Industrial Grade Gas Leak Detectors are housed in Explosion proof housing. They are typically used where large amount of LPG is stored. They are interfaced with Gas Detection Panels. Whenever leak is detected Gas Detection Panel sounds an alarm which can enable safety officers to take necessary action. There are two types of Gas Detection Panels, Conventional type and
66 | OCTOBER 2015 | INDUSTRIAL SAFETY REVIEW
addressable type. Conventional type panels divide detectors in separate zones. E.g. 2, 4, 8 etc. Whereas Addressable type of panels have usually single loop. Each loop can be connected with about 240 addressable detectors. In high-rise buildings it is necessary to identify which flat has got a gas leak from a central monitoring station (CMS). Such application requires each flat to be fitted with addressable household grade gas leak detectors with the addressable panel fitted in CMS. In case of CO, since it is odourless
human being keeps on inhaling until he fails unconscious. Advance dosage i.e. about 150ppm for couple of hours can affect nervous system. CO detectors issue warning well in advance before this can happen. In India hazards of CO are experienced in parking and bathrooms fitted with Gas Geysers. It is also required in homes using firewood or oil for heating, usually in North India, Himalayan Regions. Again carbon monoxide detectors are of three types, Household, Commercial & Industrial Grade. Usually parking of high rise building is fitted with Commercial Grade Detectors with Gas Detection Panel. Advanced panel have facility to display PPM level. Modern homes are air-conditioned. It is possible that CO2 level rises above prescribed healthy level and cause discomfort to inmates. Foul smells caused by VOCs (due to rotting of vegetables,
dead animals like rats etc) also affect the quality of air. CO2 and VOC detectors send the level of contamination to Building Management System which then takes action to correct the same. All above sensors and panels could be connected to the BMS which can alert the facility management staff. 4. Case Study Vighnaharta Security has installed their detectors in several high rise buildings constructed by reputed builders like Shapoorji Pallonji, Raheja, Lodha, Kalpataru, Paranjape Schemes and several others. We installed household gas leak detectors in every home in India’s two tallest buildings on this date, Imperial Towers at Tardeo. We have also won orders from the new project in Lower Parel where 80 storey High Rise is being constructed. Paranjape Schemes’ Blue Ridge & Avinash Bhosale Construction’s tower in Koregaon Park also use our detectors. Several five star hotels like Hayat, Marriot, Rodas etc. use such detectors. Conclusion Various technologies could be used to detect various gases in order to provide safety and save energy. Modern techniques of fire suppression could be used to put out fires near the possible cause. Energy could be save by using simple lighting automation device. Realty Automation & Security Systems Pvt. Ltd. Manufacturers various types of gas leak detectors for household, commercial and industrial use. Exploring opportunities on Asahi India Glass | Fire protection system glass case of fire. In this regard, let us understand some related aspects and issues. Anatomy and physiology of a building Firstly, there are numerous factors that determine a building’s susceptibility to fire. These include: the type and size of the building, its construction method, the flammability of construction materials, the interior design, type of occupancy, the building’s age and the fire prevention and safety arrangements.
Mr. Somasundaram Senthil Kumar, Business Head – Projects, Asahi India Glass Limited (AIS)
G
lass is an integral part of modern architecture and interior design. A versatile and sustainable material, glass – used for façades, windows or in interiors – gives buildings and homes structural stability, aesthetic appeal and a contemporary look, while helping save energy and costs. There has been some debate about safety in the use of glass in general, and in the case of fire in particular. Glass façades have been held responsible for aggravating fire accidents and their consequences in buildings. However, nothing could be further from the truth. When proper norms and guidelines are followed for designing and constructing glass buildings, and the right types of glasses are used for façades, the destructive effects of fire are greatly reduced. Fire safety – An all-round affair The right knowledge and a broader perspective can help us make the correct judgement of the role of glass in

Fire Safety Engineering In international building design, fire safety engineering plays a very important role. It uses scientific principles to understand fire and human behaviour in fire incidents, thereby helping in safeguarding people, property and the environment from destruction. It involves the following aspects: • Assessment of fire hazards and their impact areas • Effective building design and construction • Determining optimum fire prevention and safety measures • Design, installation and maintenance of fire-detection systems • Appropriate equipment and manpower for fire-fighting and rescue operations Fire protection systems Fire and Smoke Protection Systems should be adopted while designing buildings. Passive Fire Protection is an important part of the fire safety strategy of any building. These work by creating a barrier, limiting spreading of fire, smoke and heat, protecting escape routes and the building’s critical structural components. Examples of PFP
include fire doors, fire-resistant glass walls/ floors/façades, fire-resistant sprayed coatings on structural steel, smoke control extract ductwork, fire-stopping penetration seals, etc. These do not provide a complete solution but are intended to work in conjunction with Active Fire Preventive Systems like fire alarms, smoke detection, sprinkler systems, extinguishers and Exiting Systems like fire exits, fire lifts, refuge balconies, etc. There should be openings for doors, windows, structural and HVAC penetrations. A window-like opening should be provided on each floor of the building. Glass – See what’s safe Internationally today, there are excellent alternatives available for clear vision safety glass. These include high-performance products like transparent glasses with intumescent layers, special coatings and laminates. They have also opened up new avenues for architectural creativity, as they are transparent products, look aesthetically appealing and integrate well with the other glass products used in the interiors. These solutions are safe, impact resistant and provide clear vision fireproof glazing that has test evidences of satisfying functional and time requirements for fire proofing. Tempered/toughened glass, laminated glass, insulated glass units and wire mesh glass are also good fire retardants. In fact, today, there are products that can actually substitute a brick wall in terms of fire-rating property, yet give transparency. While some of the fire safety glasses function as a physical barrier preventing spread of fire and smoke, certain advanced www.ind-safety.com

solutions can actually drastically reduce the radiant heat from a fire. The European classification standards (EN 13501) for glass use the following system:
E – Integrity W – Low Radiation I – Insulation Accordingly, the following types of glasses are available in the FRG range E Class – They provide for only integrity. These are special tempered glasses and they prevent the spread of flames to the non-fire side. There will be no protection from radiation in this type of glasses. They are normally used for internal applications. EW Class – These are tempered and laminated glasses. They prevent the flames and also control the radiation on the non-fire side to a maximum of 15KW per sqm. They offer integrity and provide for low heat radiation.
They are used for internal and external applications. EI Class – These type of FRG glasses offer integrity and insulation. The maximum temperature on the nonfire side does not exceed an average of 140 degree Celsius. Specialised glass is one of the ways to protect from fire and fire hazards. A range of high quality, fire-resistant glasses are available today to mitigate the adverse effects of fire accidents and offer enhanced protection. Wired Glass – It is more stable at higher temperatures and is also resistant to the pressure of fire hoses as the embedded wire mesh helps the glass keep its structural integrity even after thermal stress causes cracks. This property makes wired glass ideal for preventing fire ingress Borosilicate Glass – Famous for its application in the manufacture of cooking vessels, Borosilicate, because of its extremely low thermal expansion coefficient, is ideal for any application that requires heat resistance Toughened Glass – The special tempering process used in this glass makes it highly resistant to stresses. Additionally, even when it gets to the point of breaking, it crumbles into small granules that are very less likely to cause any injuries Toughened Glass with flame retardant coating – This flame retardant coating is typically metal that further enhances the flame and
72 | OCTOBER 2015 | INDUSTRIAL SAFETY REVIEW
heat resistance of the glass Toughened Glass with Intumescent gel – As is the property of any intumescent, the gel increases greatly in size when exposed to fire, and its high hydration content keeps the surrounding areas significantly cooler than any other material. This kind of glass is highly efficient in locations within buildings with higher concentration of people Laminated Glass with Intumescent layers – Highly desirable for façades, the lamination makes it hardy enough for the façade and windows, and the intumescent layers restrict temperature rise during fires although the glass is 100% transparent and lacks wiring within These performance parameters of glass make buildings more efficient and ecologically viable ‘Green’ glass is a double winner • Visual Light Transmission • Solar Factor • U-Value • Internal Reflection Conclusion It would be unfair to blame glass for the destruction caused by fire in buildings. In most cases, it is negligence and/ or illegal/ poor-quality design and construction that result in loss of life and property. If proper norms and building safety codes are followed, and guidelines adhered to, glass façades only help in fire rescue and not make it worse. All over the world, glass is a widely-accepted building material utilised on a massive scale for architecture and design. In Mumbai, we conducted the energy performance analysis of a building equipped with a high-performance glass. The cost-benefit analysis and the end results clearly showed that this glass enabled a high level of both energy and cost savings. www.ind-safety.com

4K resolution 4K ultra high-definition technology is poised to revolutionize video surveillance. 4K resolution is defined as 4096 x 2160 pixels with an approximate aspect ratio of 1.9:1. On the other hand, Ultra-high-definition television (UHDTV) has a resolution of 3840 x 2160 with an approximate aspect ratio of 1.78:1 aspect. The use of width to characterize the overall resolution marks a switch from the previous generation, which categorized media according to the vertical dimension such as 720p or 1080p. 4K cameras provide end users with a higher level of detail than ever before possible. 4K resolution
provides four times the detail of 1080p observational-class cameras, resulting in the clearest picture possible on the market today. 4K technology has incredible potential for the entire video surveillance industry. 4K technology combines new sensors and digital signal processors (DSPs) to achieve next-generation image detail. The innovative sensors enable the cameras to operate at up to 30 frames per second (fps), which significantly improves the quality of the image coming into the camera. With improved DSPs, the camera is able to handle larger image formats than previously possible. The resolution provided by the

prevailing range of 10-megapixel cameras is almost the same as that of 4K cameras. However, 10 MP cameras provide low frame rates and light sensitivity, while requiring expensive storage capabilities to handle the resulting high-resolution video. On the other hand, 4K provides higher frame rates and greater light sensitivity without the need for cost-prohibitive storage arrays. Benefits of 4K 4K technology offers four times the amount of evidentiary detail with minimal impact to storage cost. The technologically innovative sensors and DSPs make it possible for end users, who may have previously only been able to afford cameras in the 720p to 1080p range, to now benefit from the superior image quality of 4K without going over budget. In addition, 4K gives end users better forensic zoom capabilities and greater image detail than 10 MP cameras. 4K avoids the problem of many HD and megapixel cameras that display “choppy” or “blocky” video www.ind-safety.com
when using the digital zoom feature. With 4K, users can zoom in further on an image before it degrades. The finer pixel geometry of 4K resolution also provides improved video analytic capabilities as a result of higher image quality and could, in some cases, even double detection ranges. 4K technology increases situational awareness and offers considerable value in control room environments. Delivering approximately 8.3 million pixels, 4K displays significantly enhance the ability of operators to monitor finely detailed imagery in a range of applications. 4K security systems are perfect for high-traffic areas where you need to be able to zoom in to see whether someone is dancing or fighting. Hotels, tourist areas, Athletic fields, Schools, universities, big box retail, train/bus stations and government facilities are just a few of the industries that could benefit from these 4K systems. 4K has the ability to support high quality live view, even if users choose INDUSTRIAL SAFETY REVIEW | OCTOBER 2015 | 95

not to store images at full frame rate. A 4K image is crisp and the higher frame rate would make it easier for police to get a clear image of a criminal even if they were moving. Besides, the high resolution doesn’t sacrifice quality even when they have to deal with large crowds. The widespread deployment of 4K HDTV video surveillance cameras for a large user not only provides increased opportunities for improved investigations, but also business intelligence. Covering a large warehouse or busy hallways would be easier with 4K resolution. More pixels added into the image allows for the user to zoom into the picture without sacrificing image quality which makes this technology optimal for security. Challenges As with any new technology, the eco-system has to be in place for 4K video to be successfully deployed for security applications. • The security camera has to support 4K video. • The network-attached storage appliance must provide storage for nearby cameras & redundancy of storage. • The server must be capable for applications that help to decode and analyse the video footage. • A 4K monitor is required in order to view the stored footage.
96 | OCTOBER 2015 | INDUSTRIAL SAFETY REVIEW
For most Organizations, putting this eco-system in place could prove challenging. The servers and network infrastructure may be in place, but many desktop monitors do not support full 4K video. This is further compounded by the fact that a premise might deploy multiple 4K security cameras for monitoring, which increases the demand on both storage and network. An Organization switching to 4K, needs to invest in at least four times more capacity in their network while maintaining data integrity, flexibility and performance. IT management must determine if their network is capable to take on this new influx of data. If the current system has already begun to experience degradation in performance or there are new challenges such as reliability limitations, the system may not be equipped to take on increased amounts of complex storage and an IT manager should explore increased network capacity, such as adding additional 10 Gigabytes (Gbps) network connections or adding higher performance connections, such as 40 Gbps Ethernet. It must be noted that with 4K cameras, the increase in resolution will push up bandwidth and storage requirements. Conclusion • The penetration of 4K video surveillance will depend on the eco-system. The cost of the cameras, suitable optics, encoders, transmission, recorders and faster
computers and most importantly, 4K displays. In brief, other aspects of the IP surveillance ecosystem will need to evolve. Perhaps H.265 will become the next component in this ever progressing evolution. • A video source capable of supporting the identification of a person or vehicle of interest depends not only on resolution, but imager, image processing, lens, illumination and compression efficiency. With all parameters being equal, 4K provides four times the resolution of 1080p HDTV video sources. • A major advantage of 4K is the extended picture resolution and ability to reduce the number of cameras normally used in open spaces. • The major disadvantage is the bandwidth required for high resolution, although H.265 is expected to partly address this issue. Low light capabilities are also restricted by pixel sizes and the amount of light that falls onto an ‘imager’. Wide Dynamic range is also an issue. • 4K has a big future but Organizations will have to weigh the pros and cons as the technology is relatively new. • It is just a matter of time before 4K becomes a business standard.

xis Communications, the world leader in network video, adds AXIS F34 Main Unit to its flexible and modular AXIS F Series. Together with previously launched products, the company is now able to introduce AXIS F34 Surveillance System, a complete hardware and software package that allows for easy setup of a highly discreet HDTV surveillance system covering four closely situated indoor areas. “With AXIS F34 Surveillance System, we’ve focused on putting together a smart and efficient solution that’s easy to buy, install and use,” says Erik Frännlid, Axis’ Director of Product Management. “Everything that’s required for a video www.ind-safety.com

surveillance system is in one box. Small business owners get a highly discreet four-camera surveillance system with easy and secure remote monitoring and management, even from mobile devices.” AXIS F34 Surveillance System AXIS F34 Surveillance System includes one AXIS F34 Main Unit with an external power supply and four thumb-sized AXIS F1004 Sensor Units that can be discreetly recessed- or surface-mounted on ceilings and walls using the included accessories. Also supplied are two AXIS Surveillance microSDXC Card 64 GB (with SD card adaptors) that are specifically engineered to handle continuous overwriting for lasting performance. The cards are compatible with AXIS F34 Main Unit’s built-in SD card slots for local storage of recordings and enable the system to run independently without the need for an external PC or a recording device for day-to-day operation. Another important component of the system is the use of the freely downloadable video management software, AXIS Camera Companion 3.10, for easy and secure remote monitoring and management from any device with the software application. The system operates efficiently with two Axis 64 GB cards that allow one to two week’s worth of video recording to be retained before overwriting takes place. Recording and storage are optimized, thanks to smart programs and technologies in AXIS F34 Main Unit and AXIS Camera Companion 3.10 that enable: www.ind-safety.com
• Automatic configuration of AXIS F34 Main Unit for recording based on video motion detection • Support for Video Motion Detection 3, a video analytic program that has a false alarm filter to ignore motion such as swaying trees and small animals so that it can reliably detect moving objects of interest • Axis’ Zipstream technology, a more efficient implementation of the H.264 video encoder that can lower bandwidth and storage use by an average of 50% or more for many surveillance scenarios AXIS F Series AXIS F34 is part of a series of products that is based on a divided network camera concept, where the camera is split into a sensor unit—made up of a lens and image sensor with a cable— and a main unit, which is the body of the camera. The cable connects the sensor unit with the main unit and gives installers the flexibility to mount the small sensor unit discreetly or in tight places, while the main unit can be placed elsewhere where there is space. Four-channel main units such as AXIS F34 can connect to four sensor units at a time. With AXIS F34 Surveillance System, the four AXIS F1004 Sensor Units can be installed in four different indoor locations up to 15 m (49 ft.) away from the AXIS F34 Main Unit. Since AXIS F1004 supports 720p resolution, the main unit can simultaneously stream full frame rate HDTV 720p videos from the four connected sensor units through its one Ethernet port. When AXIS F34 Main Unit is used with 1080p AXIS F Sensor Units, the
main unit can stream 1080p videos at 12.5/15 frames per second (50/60 Hz) or 720p videos at full frame rate (25/30 fps) from each channel. AXIS F34 also supports quad view streaming, which combines four separate views from the connected sensor units into one for simultaneous viewing. Besides Axis’ Zipstream technology and Video Motion Detection 3, AXIS F34 Main Unit supports active tampering alarm and thirdparty applications based on the AXIS Camera Application Platform. The main unit can be powered using Power over Ethernet or an external power supply. About Axis Communications Axis offers intelligent security solutions that enable a smarter, safer world.
