Industry Oscar for VdS-Cyber-Security The Security Innovation Award, granted by the world´s leading security trade fair, the “Security” in Essen, is known as the “Industry Oscar”. Every two years outstanding performances for optimum loss prevention are rewarded. The golden and thus highest award in the category “Services” went to the emergent CyberSecurity services of VdS: the VdS-guidelines 3473, the first Cyber-security standard specifically for medium-sized companies, and the institutes´ further associated services such as the free Quick-Check, the fast Quick-Audit including attestation or the VdS-Certification of information security for companies. Dr. Harald Olschok, Managing Director of the German Association of Security Industry (BDSW) and Chairman of the jury for the services sector, stated at the ceremony in the Essen exhibition halls: “For the Industry Oscar `Security Innovation Award´ it is not only technical finesse and innovative impulses that count. The positive consequences for people and society which result from these services are also decisive. Congratulations to the Cyber-Security Standards of VdS for our most vulnerable SMEs, they have prevailed among many high-quality entries from the USA, France
Handover of the Golden Security Innovation Award for the VdS standard for optimal Cyber-Security in the SME sector by Jury Chairman Dr. Harald Olschok, Managing Director of the German Association of the Security Industry (right): with the trophy VdS CEO Dr. Robert Reinermann, with the certificate VdS Manager for CyberSecurity, Markus Edel. and Great Britain. The VdS-guidelines 3473 make this sensitive issue for SMEs con-crete and manageable.” Dr. Robert Reinermann, CEO of VdS, explained at the ceremony: “Germany is the country most affected by cybercrime worldwide. Economic damage caused by digital attacks in Germany
alone is estimated at 45 billion Euros per year, 1.6 percent of the gross do-mestic product – and the number of attacks is growing rapidly all over the world! Particularly endangered are the often highly innova-tive, but unfortunately mostly poorly secured SMEs. Again and again cybercriminals gain access to patents, processes, plannings, prices, often to all sensitive corporate data. Digital knowledge theft threatens the survival of many small and medium enterprises. That’s why we offer to SMEs the guidelines VdS 3473 about digital secur-ing with well-known practicality and easy tips for implementation for free. “ The guidelines VdS 3473 contain all relevant information about the organisational and technical implementation of information security and provide the usual practical assistance, at a cost which is opti-mally manageable for SMEs. According to a study of the Alliance for Cyber-Security the guidelines VdS 3473 are already among the top 3-standards in the implementation of management systems for in-formation security. a significant growth phase, and with the support of the Egyptian Fire Protection Association this year, I believe that our platform has never been in a stronger position to support the exponential growth the Egyptian security sector is currently witnessing” said Anita Mathews, Group Director, Informa Industrial Group organisers of MEFSEC. Based on data compiled from Securitas & Freedonia, when benchmarked against ratios from global regions, Egypt’s addressable security market is estimated at around USD 1.6 billion, representing around 0.5 per cent of total GDP. This is equivalent to around 10 per cent of the MENA regions addressable security market, and in terms of growth rates Egypt’s security market is anticipated to grow at high single-digit rates nearing 10 per cent per annum. “Egypt is one of the main high potential markets in the Arab region. We choose to participate in MEFSEC to successfully reach the Egyptian and North African markets.

It is well established that green buildings enjoy an edge in terms of incentives. They are cost-effective, and developers enjoy government subsidies while consumers pay less for electricity and water. Buildings scoring low on green can choose the most relevant options for their needs from among a range of solutions available in the market to help become energy efficient, environment friendly, and costeffective. The industry needs inspirational leaders Chief Executive of the British Safety Council explores the nature of health and safety leadership at the 8th International Forum on Work Safety in Beijing.
The 8th International Forum on Work and Safety, which will take place in Beijing, China, on the 27-29 September 2016, will bring together health and safety professionals, business leaders and government officials to share their achievements, as well as the latest trends and developments in health and safety worldwide. Speaking on 28 September 2016, Mike Robinson, Chief Executive of the British Safety Council, will present the business case for the proportionate management of health and safety, as well as exploring the nature of leadership in the industry. The forum, hosted by China’s State Administration of Work Safety and the International Labour Organisation (ILO), demonstrates the country’s continuous efforts to reduce the toll of workplace injury and ill health and its improving record in occupational safety and health. Mike Robinson said: “The global cost of
health and safety failures in the workplace is still unacceptably high. Every day, 6,300 people die as a result of occupational accidents or work-related diseases, which is over 2.3 million deaths per year. This amounts to approximately 4% of global GDP each year, and provides an overwhelming economic reason to protect workers. “International health and safety conferences, such as the Forum in Beijing, are proof that although health and safety records vary throughout the world, there is a lot of good will and resources to share experience and best practice for the benefit of employees and employers worldwide.” At the Forum in Beijing, Mike Robinson will describe how a company can create an environment where employees are encouraged and supported to identify potentially dangerous situations and recommend solutions for improvement that would prevent future accidents. Mr Robinson will argue that to encourage such positive employee engagement in health and safety, the
management needs to inspire them with passion and dedication, which are the qualities of true leaders. “Really good leaders are truly inspirational. Their passion and dedication drives people to follow them and to adopt similar beliefs and ideas. They inspire others, not just because of what they say but because of what they do. “It makes business sense too. The British Safety Council’s report into the business benefits of health and safety shows that with investment comes higher productivity, less sickness absence and more social harmony. It really is money well spent,” concluded Mr Robinson. Mike Robinson’s professional profile and his views on the key issues for the health and safety industry are featured in his recent interview with SHP, as well as the interview he gave to the Safety Management magazine. A key message of the SHP interview can be summarised in his quote “Good safety leaders understand organisations and people, and have all the other qualities of a good leader. Leadership is about people; you need to listen to (your) people and engage with them.”

T
he 350 year old Palace of Versailles near Paris has an auditorium located on the top floor. In order to protect the surrounding rooms from vibrations and noise and to improve the acoustics in the auditorium itself, Getzner installed a vibration protection solution made from Sylomer® and Sylodyn®. The pillars supporting the galleries were mounted on approximately 270 point bearings. Getzner not only supplied the materials, but also supervised their installation on-site. “We had a very short time frame for delivery and installation of the elastic bearings - from placing the order with Getzner until completing the installation took just two weeks. The precise calculations carried out by Getzner in advance allowed for optimum planning of the project and installation on time,” explains Manuel De Faria, Site Manager for the client Paris Charpente. Comprehensive range of materials enables homogeneous vibration protection
used to enable flexible adaptation of the sound control to the different on-site conditions. This allowed homogeneous noise insulation values to be achieved across the entire installation area. “The wide range of different material types that can be used flexibly depending on the requirements sets us apart from the competition. The effectiveness and long service life of our products has been proven time and time again,” reports Cédric Le Chevillier, Construction Account Manager at Getzner France.

Shriram Transport Finance Company Trusted Matrix Time-Attendance & Access Control Solutions
S
hriram Transport Finance Company (STFC) was incorporated in the year 1979. With its head-office in Mumbai, STFC has 700+ branches across India. It is a part of the ‘SHRIRAM’ conglomerate, which has significant presence in financial services viz., commercial vehicle financing business, consumer finance, life and general insurance, stock broking, chit funds and distribution of financial products such as life and general insurance products and units of mutual funds. Apart from these financial services, the group also has presence in the non-financial sector business such as property development, engineering projects & information technology.
The 700+ branches of the company include the head-office, regional offices and branch offices under each of the regional offices. Previously, the company was using biometric devices of a different brand at some of its locations, while managed attendance data manually at the remaining locations. As a result, accurate attendance management of all employees at each location and processing their salaries on time became a tedious, time consuming and error prone task for the HR team. STFC was looking for a biometric based centralized Time-Attendance solution. They wanted centralized Time-Attendance management of all employees from its Mumbai based head-office. Along with attendance management, the company was also looking for a solution that would help them monitor and control any unauthorized entry at the branches. Additionally, they wanted to integrate the Time-Attendance software with their existing HRMS software for speedy and timely salary processing.
based COSEC Time-Attendance solution with centralized attendance and leave management features. Biometric fingerprint based devices were installed at all locations to mark a user’s attendance. For fast and error-free salary processing, Matrix integrated COSEC Time-Attendance with their existing HRMS payroll software. At branches where the company required access control, Matrix has installed biometric fingerprint based access control devices to control people movement. This comprehensive solution automated all Time-Attendance processes right from recording entries and exits up to processing salaries. • Biometric Time-Attendance Terminal at 700+ Locations • Biometric Door Controllers for Access Control • Connected all Locations using Ethernet • Centralized Attendance Management Software • Integration with Third Party HRM Software

Cylinder Less Automatic Fire Detection & Suppression System Technology
Universal use: high flexibility of BlazeCut Tube and A, B, C and electrical fires class rating can protect almost any space High cost-effectivity: zero maintenance, long working life, automatic activation beats the competition in cost-effectivity
Stainless steel fittings
No cylinder for storage of extinguishing agent needed: the whole system can be placed inside the protected enclosure Option to connect the pressure switch and other additional components like signaling unit to perform further functions
Pressure gauge Heat sensitive BlazeCut Tube with the extinguishing agent
The system consists of a heat sensitive BlazeCut Tube made of special plastic which is closed by a stainless steel fitting on each end. The BlazeCut Tube has both storage and detection function which means that the extinguishing agent is stored directly in the BlazeCut Tube and no additional storage device such as cylinder is needed. BlazeCut system operates automatically independent of any power supply by detecting higher temperatures. When the temperature in the protected enclosure rises to a critical threshold, the detection tube melts down at the point where the affecting temperature is the highest. Melting the tube creates a hole releasing the entire extinguishing agent stored in the tube onto the source of the fire. BlazeCut “T” Series systems are supplied in various lengths of the tube and volumes of agent. The standard volume of agent ranges from 0,25 kg to 1,0 kg, which is sufficient to protect enclosures with volume between 0,25 m³ and 1,00 m³ respectively.
Clean and effective extinguishing agent: world-wide known and accepted HFC gases (HFC-227ea and HFC-236fa) No pressurization needed: the system works by increasing pressure of the extinguishing agent when heated Automatic operation based on increased temperature: ideal for non-occupied spaces or spaces out of sight Fully independent: system is operational 24/7 without any power supply No maintenance during entire working life = zero maintenance costs Long working life: 5 ~ 6 years depending on the type of application No harm to protected enclosure and people when discharged Very simple installation: no training required for installation Pressure gauge to monitor the pressure at any time

Beating the heat with
Scott Safety T he issue of heat stress is a real concern for employers and their workforce across the world and it is easy to understand why. According to The US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), June 2016 was the hottest June ever recorded worldwide, and marked 14 consecutive months of record heat for the globe. High temperatures are a cause for concern for outdoor workers and increase the risk of heat-related illness such as heat exhaustion, heat stress and heat stroke. Exacerbating this issue is the increasing trend between rapid development in hot countries and the number of labour intensive industries such as construction, mining and oil and gas operations in these countries. According to the UK’s Health & Safety Executive (HSE), heat stress occurs when the body’s means of controlling its internal temperature, such as sweating, starts to fail. Symptoms of the condition can include: fainting, heat stroke, heat exhaustion, muscle cramps, heat rash and severe thirst. In addition to climatic changes, heat stress can be induced by other factors such as work rate, worker’s clothing and PPE compatibility. Therefore it is imperative that manufacturers develop equipment that uses lightweight, breathable fabrics and materials where possible. There is a responsibility too on employers to choose the most appropriate equipment for the work and to ensure the correct training is given so that the worker wears the equipment properly. “Scott Safety invests a considerable amount of time in the development of our personal protective equipment (PPE) to ensure we design lightweight products.

CASE STUDY We use the best performing materials that offer the correct level of protection,” explains Chris Ellerby, Senior Global Product Manager. The importance of wearing PPE
Ensuring workers wear PPE is an ongoing challenge, especially if the pieces are not designed to work together. PPE incompatibility makes the equipment uncomfortable and can lead to the worker getting unnecessarily hot; “Our range of PPE has been specifically developed so that it complements each other and can be worn comfortably, regardless of the heat. There is much research to show that good product compatibility will improve the overall comfort for the wearer, regardless of their working environment and therefore ensure that the products will
continue to be worn without detriment to the wearer.” Scott Safety’s range of PPE includes the multiple application bump cap FirstBase 3. This innovative bump cap is designed to provide protection to the wearer against the effects of head striking against hard, stationary objects. It is made from a breathable fabric that allows high levels of ventilation that will reduce heat stress and improve wearer comfort. Additional features of the FirstBase 3 which works to reduce the effects of heat stress include the wide moisture wicking sweatband. Chris Ellerby who has worked on the designs of this product since its inception explained: “Reducing heat and humidity on the head is a key customer need when it comes to bump or head protection in general. Scott Safety has done a huge
amount of work in terms of analysing relative humidity on the head and implemented several improvements to improve airflow and permit moisture to be expelled; making the FirstBase bump cap collectively one of, if not the lowest, relative humidity bump caps on the marketplace. ” However compatibility does not just centre on weight and comfort. There is no governing body that dictates that all equipment must meet certain compatibility standards making it harder for manufacturers to develop product compatibility. Ultimately what this means is that unless equipment is purchased from the same manufacturer and therefore designed to work together, good fit and optimum comfort cannot necessarily be guaranteed. And equipment designed and supplied from one manufacturer will most likely have been approved to work together too. Working in environments where more substantial personal protection is required such as confined spaces or contaminated air environments is a growing trend in many countries. In these situations increased respiratory protection may well be required and this will involve wearing more complex equipment that could, if not designed well, add to heat stress levels. However, Scott Safety, renowned worldwide for its respiratory protection range, recently launched a new powered respirator specifically designed to reduce weight burden. Wearing a respirator over a period of hours can create a great physiological burden on the wearer because the sheer weight of the kit could increase the effort required to breathe. However, this new design incorporates a curved backplate and lightweight battery ensuring user comfort for long periods of use. Scott Safety has developed a range of solutions that allow users to work comfortably in intense climates, safe in the knowledge that they are properly protected at all times. Axis celebrates launched the IoT revolution in the security industry Axis Communications is celebrating the 20th anniversary of the world’s first network video camera, a true Internet of Things (IoT) device introduced in 1996 that laid the foundation for an industry shift from analog to IP-based video surveillance and has spawned the Internet of Security Things. AXIS 200 was the world’s first network video camera to connect directly to the Internet or an intranet, an extension of Axis’ original focus of connecting printers, and then optical storage devices, to networks. At the time, Axis had pioneered what it called ‘ThinServer’ technology, which drove a shift away from mainframe computers by utilizing more flexible, lightweight servers and was to become the enabling concept behind IoT. Axis’ history in developing network solutions for security has expanded beyond cameras and now includes other IP-based products for physical access control, a network horn speaker and an IP-based video door station. The underlying concept of connecting everything to the network ties back to Axis’ original roots and has established it as a leader in the emerging IoT segment known as the Internet of

Security Things. The first network video camera delivered 1 frame /17 seconds in normal resolution, or 1 fps in CIF resolution. It went on to win several industry awards and laid the foundation for a long litany of innovative network video cameras, encoders and physical access control devices pioneered by Axis. AXIS 200 served as the first step toward the company’s current industry-leading position as the world’s top supplier of IP-based security solutions, which included milestone introductions such as the security industry’s first HDTV network camera and first thermal network camera that helped accelerate the move from analog to digital video in the security market. Within ten years of the introduction
of the first network video camera, Axis had reached the one million milestone in network cameras installed worldwide. Today, Axis offers more than 200 network camera models for every need. It has added innovative features for a full scope of high-resolution performance, analytics, mobile monitoring and cloud-based implementations, adding powerful and smart features that have fueled global growth and adoption. “Looking back over twenty years, we are proud that our original vision of connected devices and smarter networks for a wide range of applications, using what we called ThinServer technology, has taken hold in such a broad-based way,” said Martin Gren, who along with Mikael Karlsson and Keith Bloodworth, founded Axis in 1984. “Little did we know in 1996 that the IoT would take off like it has, but are gratified of the role we played as one of the pioneers in this area, especially for security purposes where we have accelerated the shift from analog to digital solutions. It gives us great confidence in how Axis will continue to add value and innovation for the future of connected devices and for making the world a safer place.”

Digitalization is an unstoppable force, penetrating all sectors and revolutionizing business environments across the board. It drives social development just like the industrial revolution did. As new business opportunities manifest themselves, so do the information security risks involved. Digitalization has especially affected the media industry, where shrinking revenues from print media are forcing even the most traditional operators to rethink their strategy. There are

two options: to fight at the forefront or be left behind. New industry operators and rapidly developing technological opportunities, such as virtual reality, will completely reshape the playing field. To be able to survive and stay in the winning team, media companies must constantly, and at an increasing rate, introduce new digital services in the marketplace. “As a major media industry operator, Sanoma has stood at the forefront and capitalized on the opportunities provided by digitalization, while seeing how critical information security and cyber threats are for reputation management, smooth business operations as well as for enabling growth. Nixu’s agility and expertise in different areas of information security are a perfect answer to the requirements of Sanoma’s fast-paced development”, says
Kai Taka-Aho, Chief Technology Officer at Sanoma. Nixu’s Chief Commercial Officer Valtteri Peltomäki: “As the society as a whole is becoming increasingly digital, the traditional information security, which relies on antivirus software and firewalls, is no longer sufficient for controlling the ever-increasing cyber risks. When it comes to digitalization, Sanoma group’s uncompromising efforts in information security are a testament to its pioneering spirit. We are very happy to be able to provide Sanoma with a comprehensive selection of cybersecurity services for protecting their business. We want to be a true cybersecurity partner for Sanoma, allowing them to implement new digital services and ensure their availability safely despite the cyber threats.”

at a time when budget allocation for security is growing but there is a skills shortage on the ground.” According to IT research and advisory company Gartner, security spending is expected to reach $1.23 billion in 2016 in India. In 2014 security services accounted for 57% of total security revenue, which is likely to increase to 60% by 2019. Gartner puts this strong growth down to customers requiring external services to transform their security. Larger, more mature organizations in India are starting to take a risk-based approach to security spending and even smaller organizations are looking to improve their security. There is also an understanding that continuous monitoring and response needs to be at the core of an organizations’ security strategy. Gartner points out that key security initiatives for most organizations in India include: security monitoring, identity governance and administration, mobile and cloud security governance, advanced threat defense, application security, security policy and program
development. “This change in attitude to organizations’ security requirements represent a maturing market that realizes its security provisions have to move forward in order to meet the challenges faced in today’s world” comments Giri. “Installing modern security equipment is an integral part of this process, but those systems must be fully monitored if they are to be effective. PACOM is ideally placed to offer customers an easy to implement, easy to use solution, with systems that have been tried and tested the world over.” PACOM GMS and Unison are open protocol integrated security management platforms, integrating a wide range of PACOM and third party security and building management solutions on a single unified platform. PACOM GMS has been designed for remote management of multiple sites, whereas PACOM Unison is a campus style solution where local management is required. In addition to the open platform approach adopted by PACOM, one of the other key differentiators in the Indian market is the level of service and support offered by the company. PACOM has a network of authorized Value Added Resellers (VARs) across India who have an in-depth knowledge of the company’s solutions and products. Through PACOM Value Added Resellers (VARs), customers can get local technical support, schedule a product demonstration, or attend training courses.

protecting against ransomware with an offline copy. In addition, tape continues to be significantly more cost-effective than any other storage medium, as reflected in the following chart:
The Most Efficient Tape Storage Today The new Scalar storage platform takes the benefits of tape to the next level. It offers best-in-class storage density — twice that of earlier-generation rack-mounted libraries — enabling organizations of all sizes to reduce their data center footprint and further reduce their storage costs. As an example, Scalar customers can vault tapes within a system to provide on-premise, monitored cold storage for less than $0.001 per GB, or $0.0014 per GB per month — a fraction of the cost of public cloud storage.
• Embedded compute capabilities eliminate the need for external application servers. • Policy-based data integrity checking — with the ability to move data off suspect tapes — and in-library active vaulting enable the storage of petabytes of data reliably and costeffectively for years.
Enhanced User Experience Consumer IT has raised expectations for the user experience in the data center. As a result, the new Scalar platform significantly modernizes and enhances the user experience with features such as an all-new HTTP-based interface; automated setup, configuration and management tasks via web services; an intuitive, swipebased local user interface design; and interaction via mobile devices.
Other innovations contributing to the Scalar’s efficiency include:
Three New Offerings Based on the Scalar Platform
• 80 PLUS® certified power supplies, a unique feature of the Scalar platform, minimize power and cooling costs and reduce the impact of data centers on the environment. • Quantum’s iLayer™ proactive diagnostics resolve issues before they affect operations, to maximize library uptime and minimize operational expenses.

New safety standards require full size exhaust port energy isolation devices
A
s a pneumatic products user, you are probably already familiar with the omnipresent ROSS L-O-X® lockout valve. Introduced by ROSS 52 years ago, the L-O-X® valve was developed to fulfill our customer’s requirements for safety-related lockout devices. Always striving to lead the industry in innovations, ROSS’ L-O-X® valve actually predated OSHA requirements for energy isolation devices by an impressive 33 years. As time has passed, ROSS has continually improved upon the LO-X® with TEFLON seals for ease of shifting, an ergonomically designed handle, and an indicator port for verification. The L-O-X® with EEZ-ON® operation model even provides a built in soft start capability for when rapid pressurization could cause hazardous movement of cylinders. Are the L-O-X® products able to meet the newest standards for energy isolation? Absolutely! Risk assessment industry standards are evolving and require more from your energy isolation devices and systems. For instance, the Canadian CSA Z142, the PMMI B155 and B11 GSR standards are all starting to require the same new four criteria: • The device shall be capable of being locked in the OFF position. • The shut-off device shall be easy to operate (e.g., a simple pull/push action) • The device must have an exhaust port equal to or greater than its supply line • The device must have a pressure indicator (i.e., a gauge), that is visible to the operator indicate whether or not the pressure in the line has been released Why Not Ball Valves? When performing a risk assessment, system designers must now take these items into account. The valves have to expedite energy
70
INDUSTRIAL SAFETY REVIEW
OCTOBER 2016
isolation in event of emergency. Some designers choose ball valves, but these may not allow for quick exhausting. In fact, fill to dump time rations for some bleed port ball valves can be anywhere from 58 to 200 times that of a full diameter exhaust isolation valve like the L-O-X®. This greatly extended blow down time is generally beyond what would be expected from the user and could lead to a false sense of security and possible injury. Additionally the small orifices can put added strain on inlet seals which then could potentially fail and allow reapplication of energy. Ball valves often use rotary handles which could, in an emergency, be left partially open by accident. The handle could also be locked in a position other than fully off which could inhibit performance of a LOTO (Lockout/ Tagout). It is, unfortunately, possible for the valves to be tampered with so that it is actually activated when it should be locked. These valves don’t allow for a muffler to help prevent potential eye injury from the high pressure escaping air. Additionally, because ball valves are also used commonly for other functions in machinery, the one being utilized as the energy isolation device is often not readily identifiable when needed. The L-O-X® Solution : In order to effectively and efficiently meet the design criteria for these newer risk assessment standards, you can’t beat the ROSS L-O-X® and L-O-X® with EEZ-ON® operation products. They meet all the demands of these standards as outlined above. The ROSS L-O-X® valve: • Block and exhaust function with one operation • Is capable of being locked in the off position only • Has an exhaust port larger than the supply port • Is easily identifiable
as the isolation valve • Has a positive handle position for ease of use (simple push/pull operation) • Has a pressure sensing port for pop-up pressure indicator • Is tamper resistant • Allows for integration of a muffler (like the MUFFL-AIR® silencer) to avoid noiseinduced hearing loss Pop-up pressure indicator. A way to verify that all the energy has been released after initiating lockout is by having the valve equipped with a pop-up pressure indicator (see Figure 2-1 and Figure 2-2 for examples of valves with verification devices built in). Since some systems can contain large volumes of air, the employee can mistakenly think that, once the valve is locked out, all of the energy has been dissipated. To assist in lockout compliance, the pop-up indicator verifies when energy has been completely exhausted and your machine is now safe to inspect. With ROSS’ lockout and exhaust L-O-X® valve with the pop-up indicator, you get that feedback. When used as part of a Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) system, the L-O-X® valve with the pop-up indicator alerts the machine operator as to when the system has been de-energized. Because some systems contain a large volume of air, it is possible for employees to mistakenly assume the system has been de-energized completely when it hasn’t been. This can cause the danger of bodily harm. Steps should be taken to ensure that there is a reliable method of verifying de-energization in order to avoid this danger. When updating your system’s LOTO devices, consider adding a ROSS L-O-X® with a built-in pop-up indicator to the line up. ROSS lockout L-O-X® valve with full size exhaust port can simplify your safety compliance needs. Dan Henman Vice President – Marketing & Sales – NAO dan.henman@rosscontrols.com

Protect your investment with Elfab’s Rupture Disc & Safety Valve Combination Elfab’s introduction of “PRV-GARD”, designed to extend valve life
R
upture discs and holders are commonly used in combination with pressure relief valves (PRVs). Even though rupture discs can be used on their own, the benefits of using both are making this solution a popular choice in the process industries. Not only can this combination extend valve life, it can also improve maintenance schedules and support with emission control, while helping to reduce long-terms costs. Due to increasing safety pressures on businesses, Elfab recognised the demand for a robust design to improve overall safety performance and sought to develop a technically superior rupture disc assembly (PRV-GARD), combining Elfab’s leading rupture disc ranges with an improved
holder solution that allows safe opening of a rupture disc when installed before a pressure relief valve. With its increased face to face holder design, it ensures that full opening after burst is achieved, eliminating the risk of the disc protruding the holder; a significantly important factor when using a rupture disc and PRV in series. In addition, the valve life is extended with the use of a rupture disc and holder in situ as using both helps to extend and isolate the contained media from the safety valve, allowing customers to benefit from cost savings in purchasing less exotic materials for the valve. Using our rupture discs in combination, it will assure a high quality operation and support with SIL ratings. Using Elfab’s new and improved combi-
nation design will not only improve maintenance schedules and support with emission control, it will increase overall safety performance and prolong valve expectancy. For those applications that require additional valve protection, Elfab will work with you to achieve a practical solution.

he primary goal of any department store’s security system is loss prevention. Video surveillance goes a long way in preventing theft and protecting a store’s assets, while also providing safety for its customers and employees. Retailing today is a tough business and store owners face many challenges. The most obvious of these are theft and inventory shrinkage which cut into the stores’ profits. Retail surveillance using network video solutions offers an excellent means to prevent shrinkage/pilferage. By deterring crime, it reduces losses and creates a safer environment for staff and customers. Retail analytics already available in surveillance technologies include a variety of functions, such as hotspot detection and facial recognition. Retailers can use this to gain insight into areas like customer age and in-store behaviour. Video surveillance systems are now essential in a retail environment. A digital surveillance system doesn’t just protect the business, it provides a host of beneficial side effects that more than offset the cost of the initial investment.
Video Surveillance – Beyond Security Part I
Provides Business Insights
Benefits – beyond security. Employees feel safer The surveillance system is reassuring. Employees know that they shouldn’t confront someone dangerous because the suspicious and/or illegal activity will be recorded by the surveillance system. It is a fact that when employees feel safer they are more productive and are able to focus on providing excellent customer service. Further the surveillance system acts as a deterrent to potential criminals. They are less likely to take the risk of doing something illegal in the first place. Continuous surveillance With cameras providing continuous surveillance coverage, department stores can be monitored and protected from break-ins and theft even after working hours.

Crime investigation Recorded footage provided by the surveillance cameras is extremely useful for investigation of crimes and for suspect identification. It also reduces the time taken to investigate an incident. Prevent employee theft Employee theft is an unfortunate fact in retail stores. It is an enormous problem. The presence of video surveillance cameras deters such activity and captures visual evidence of workers in the act of stealing from their employers. Provide customer service information Customer service is a big deal for department stores which need to provide a welcoming atmosphere that will bring shoppers back again and again. A video surveillance system allows store managers

to monitor employee behaviour and to make sure that customers are being treated properly. Monitor customer activity Surveillance cameras provide information that is helpful for store planning. They help store owners • manage queues • count people
Remote monitoring IP surveillance systems enable remote viewing. It is possible to monitor the workplace from a remote location; not only for security, but for enhanced employee productivity too. Typically, when the boss is around, employees are more productive. With remote monitoring the Boss is able to keep an eye on activity even when far away from the store. It also enables the Boss to identify issues that need to be addressed.
