Sony enhances video security line-up with new high sensitivity network cameras with Exmor R™ CMOS sensors

Sony announces its latest lineup, the sixth generation (G6) network cameras, comprising eight new Full-HD video security cameras that deliver on the ever increasing demand for greater image clarity the video security market requires.

The new G6 cameras include: • V-series1: SNC-VB640, SNCVB642D, SNC-VM641, SNCVM642R • E-series2: SNC-EB640, SNCEB642R, SNC-EM641, SNCEM642R Using advanced imaging technology, Sony’s G6 cameras offer security professionals clear detail and higher visibility with excellent low-light sensitivity, ideal for a wide range of demanding applications, including city, transport and commercial surveillance. Further displaying Sony´s heritage in core technologies, the latest G6 cameras are equipped with high performance image sensors, lenses and image processors. They can capture

22

DECEMBER 2016 | www.ind-safety.com

images beyond the reach of conventional security cameras, providing security professionals with better visibility and greater accuracy. This improved sensitivity is made possible with Sony’s Exmor R™ CMOS sensor and eXcellent Dynamic Noise Reduction (XDNR™). The technologies offer optimum clarity with noise and ghost free images, allowing the new cameras to achieve the minimum illumination figure of 0.006 lux (30IRE), 0.01(50IRE)3. With the high sensitivity, colour integrity of images is maintained even in poorly-lit conditions allowing operators ease of identification. This low light capability is especially invaluable in applications such as city surveillance at night, which is increasingly common and a fast-growing area of demand in the security industry. Security professionals can now capture objects in the dark from a distance of up to 100m with the V-series and up to 60m with the E-series network cameras. This extended range is possible thanks to the Exmor

R™ sensor. Together with the powerful integrated IR illuminator, the cameras are able to capture high-quality IR images without overexposure. This industry-leading feature equips security personnel with more accurate and insightful imagery, encouraging swift and intelligent decisions. Reacting to the increasing customer requirement for SD card recording and 2-way audio, Sony ensures that the new E-series is equipped with a stronger feature set. The SD card is a back-up option in the event of network outage where the camera loses connection. It can continue recording while the connection is being restored, providing security personnel peace of mind. Further, the new E-series now supports 2-way audio features, providing users with remote intercom and audio recording functionality in a cost effective package, wherever it is needed. “High-quality imagery is at the heart of our business, which is why we continue to invest in new technologies to bring our customers the best possible images they’re

trying to capture,” said Riki Nishimura, General Manager, Business & Industrial Solutions Marketing Division, Professional Solutions Company (PSAP), Sony Electronics Asia Pacific. “Investing in these technologies is all about meeting the changing needs of our customers, which is why these new solutions have been designed with features that help users improve accuracy and make quicker decisions, from improved visibility in low light to increased range.” These new features of Sony’s V and E-series range not only provide enhanced imaging technology, but also incorporate the same User Interface, usability and Network Video Management Software connectivity that is present in Sony’s existing solutions.

DigitalOcean and Hasura to host Hackathon at IIT Madras DigitalOcean, a cloud platform focused on simplifying the complexities of infrastructure for software developers and businesses and Hasura, a technology platform that helps developers build apps faster are collaborating with IITM Shaastra 2017 to find and foster the next generation of great Indian start-ups. At the Shaastra Launchfest Hackathon, 20 student teams will get 48 hours to hack out the MVP of their dream startup and demo it to VCs, tech CEOs and CTOs. Hasura and DigitalOcean will offer the participating teams a giant leap into launching their startup through cash prizes, free credits, technical mentorship, and help in gaining the network and exposure that can aid these projects. Chosen teams will also be

Speaking about the Hackathon, Prabhakar Jayakumar, Country Manager, DigitalOcean said, “India will soon have the largest number of software developers in the world and student entrepreneurs are likely to play a key role in building next generation technology businesses. We are glad to support initiatives like these that help identify budding student entrepreneurs.” College life represents an enormous opportunity. It is a time when potential entrepreneurs have time, access to resources (labs, equipment, books) and exposure to students pursuing a diverse variety of

degrees. However, this potential is frequently left untapped. While the ecosystem around student startups is starting to develop in India, with most of the premier institutes boasting of entrepreneurship cells and incubators, there is still much to be done. “The need to address this gap is what motivated Hasura and DigitalOcean to lend a helping hand by setting up a platform that can support enterprising students”, points out Rajoshi Ghosh, co-founder of Hasura - a technology platform that helps developers build apps faster. Registrations for the event are now open at shaastra.org, and teams have until the 24th of December to submit their ideas. The event is scheduled for the 1st and 2nd of January at the IIT Madras campus.

Quantum extends StorNext data management benefits to customers with public cloud accounts & Third-Party object storage Quantum Corp. (NYSE: QTM) announced significant new enhancements to its award-winning StorNext® scale-out file system that take unstructured data management to higher levels of efficiency and flexibility. These enhancements in StorNext release 5.4 include the ability to integrate existing public cloud storage accounts and third-party object storage — starting with Amazon Web Services (AWS), Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud, NetApp StorageGRID, IBM Cleversafe and Scality RING — as tiers in a StorNext-unified namespace. Another new feature provides embedded application deployment in StorNext appliances, leveraging industry-standard virtualization technology to simplify integration with asset manager, data management and data sharing applications. StorNext 5.4 is the latest example of the significant enhancements in Quantum’s scale-out storage portfolio over the past two years, as the company continues to focus on delivering high-performance, cost-effective, multi-tier solutions for managing unstructured data in highly demanding environments. During this time, Quantum has also built on its long-standing leadership in media and entertainment and expanded its market reach in areas such as video surveillance, genomics, academic research and government security. As a result, the company’s scale-out storage revenue has grown rapidly — 56 percent year-over-year in the most recently completed quarter, which represented the 21st consecutive quarter of year-over-year growth.

The Challenge of Unstructured Data Growth The massive growth in unstructured data continues unabated, driven by advances such as 4K video cameras and the proliferation of IoT sensor technology, and the ability to analyze and leverage this data is an

26

DECEMBER 2016 | www.ind-safety.com

increasingly critical component of an organization’s business or mission. IT professionals face an ongoing challenge of how to manage and retain this data — and make it readily accessible when needed — in the most efficient and cost-effective way possible.

Channel, Ethernet, InfiniBand, iSCSI, NFS, SMB/CIFS and S3. StorNext has been deployed in more than 120,000 clients, and its customers include the five largest media companies in the world, all the top U.S. broadcast networks, Airbus Defence and Space, AOL Huffington Post, Baylor College of Medicine, BBC Sport, Calgary Police Service, CERN, Max Planck Institute for Chemistry, MLB Network, NASA, NIH, Swiss Institute of Bioinformatics, University of North Carolina, University of Notre Dame and UFC (to read StorNext customer success stories, visit www.quantum.com/customerstories).

StorNext 5.4 Enhancements StorNext: Powerful File System and Multi-Tier Data Management Long used for bandwidth-intensive video capture, production and distribution workflows, StorNext is increasingly being deployed by data-intensive enterprises around the globe for a broad range of use cases, including: • Technical computing and big data analytics in imaging environments such as genomics, academic research and video surveillance. • Real-time editing and manipulation of massive media datasets for entertainment. • High-performance archive. • Large-scale content repositories.

StorNext provides a unique combination of: • The fastest streaming file system performance in the industry. • Automated, policy-based data management through StorNext Storage Manager™ for cost-effective tiering across primary disk, object storage, tape and the cloud. • Heterogeneous OS support (Windows, Linux, UNIX, MacOS). • Multi-protocol support, including Fibre

StorNext 5.4 provides a number of new features and benefits, including: • Seamless Cloud Integration — A new feature in StorNext Storage Manager enables users to move data into and out of their public cloud accounts and/or existing third-party object storage (private cloud), thereby extending their StorNext-managed, tiered storage environment, protecting prior investments and reducing the cost and complexity of cloud storage administration. StorNext 5.4 currently provides support for AWS (S3, Glacier, GovCloud, C2S) and Microsoft Azure and also offers a connection to the Google Cloud through standard S3 protocol. Augmenting Quantum’s own Lattus® object storage, StorNext 5.4 includes support for NetApp StorageGRID, IBM Cleversafe and Scality RING, and Quantum plans to add integration for other object storage offerings. • Embedded Applications — Dynamic Application Environment (DAE) is a virtual computing space on StorNext-powered Xcellis™ workflow storage appliances that enables applications to run within the high-performance, shared storage environment. By eliminating the need for

| BUSINESS NEWS

dedicated servers and additional networking, the DAE reduces the time, cost and complexity of deploying and maintaining applications. • Expanded SSD Options — A new Xcellis configuration includes SSD-based metadata storage at a lower price for smaller deployments with highperformance requirements. StorNext 5.4 is currently shipping with all newly purchased Xcellis, StorNext M-Series and StorNext Pro™ Solutions offerings, as well as Artico™ archive appliances. It is available at no additional cost for StorNext 5 users under current support contracts.

Quantum’s Scale-out Storage Momentum Today’s StorNext 5.4 announcement reflects Quantum’s continuing expansion and enhancement of its scale-out storage portfolio. Over the past two years, the company has added a range of new offerings that reinforce its end-to-end approach to managing data, from high-performance ingest to long-term archiving. These offerings include Xcellis, Artico, QXS™ hybrid storage, a new StorNext AEL tape library and StorNext Connect™ management tools, which have been well-received by customers and partners, won numerous product awards and been

recognized by independent analysts. Most recently, after evaluating Quantum’s QXS hybrid storage, Gartner named the company as a Challenger in its October 2016 Magic Quadrant for General-Purpose Disk Arrays. Quantum has leveraged its enhanced portfolio and long-standing expertise in scale-out storage to extend the benefits of StorNext-powered solutions to a broader base of customers. The company’s success is evident in the rapid growth it has experienced across different scale-out storage markets and use cases — for example, in its most recently completed quarter, Quantum generated double-to-triple-digit revenue growth on a year-over-year basis in media and entertainment, video surveillance, genomics, geospatial applications and unstructured data archive.

Supporting Quotes John Wastcoat, Vice President, Business Development, Aspera, an IBM Company “We’re excited at the prospect of delivering Aspera Enterprise and Connect Server as part of the new Dynamic Application Environment. Being able to deploy secure, high-speed data movement over the WAN as an integrated part of the StorNext storage environment is a perfect fit for our mutual customers.”

Scott Sinclair, Senior Analyst, Enterprise Strategy Group “In the general IT market, Quantum is best known for its strong data protection portfolio. However, its StorNext file system and data management solutions have long addressed key challenges that an increasingly broad range of enterprises are facing due to the tremendous growth in large-scale unstructured data. StorNext 5.4 is an excellent example of how Quantum is extending the power and benefits of StorNext to these customers through innovations that leverage their prior investments and provide greater efficiency and flexibility moving forward.” Molly Rector, Vice President, Global Marketing, Quantum “More and more enterprises are finding that traditional NAS and general-purpose, scale-out storage solutions can’t meet today’s demands for managing their growing unstructured data volumes, so they’re turning to Quantum for their storage needs. We provide a unique combination of the fastest streaming performance, low-cost capacity and efficient data access — all in a unified namespace that enables users to store, share, preserve and utilize their digital assets to drive business and organizational success.”

is going to be the USP for integrators trend is that they enquire whether the product is from India or China.

Q. Which market are you targeting?

Mr. Sanjay Rao Bantwal, Director Bhuvaneshwari Business Combines P Ltd

Q. In your opinion, what is the state of security industry in India and what is the trend you see in the space? The security industry, with respect to CCTV Surveillance, in India has split into 2 segments with clear distinction over the last six months. These include the B2C (an end customer who is not a business enterprise) and the small establishments of B2B as one segment and the SME, Corporate and Institutions as the other segment. The first segment has overwhelmingly welcomed the semi skilled to upgrade their skills and provide service at a low cost. Hence one set of suppliers of security products have also spread their wings and entered the retail segment making these products available at a shop in the neighbourhood, most probably in an electrical or consumer electronics shop. The SME and Corporate have also become price conscious and tend to keep an eye on the online pricing and yet rely on experienced system integrators service. They do not want to try semi skilled installers or unbranded products unless the price gap is too much. A very interesting

40

DECEMBER 2016 | www.ind-safety.com

With more than 30 years of technology experience, we know to target only those customers who value service and experience. We are clear not to focus on the B2C consumer who is very price conscious. Housing Societies, Property Developers, Business Establishments, Educational Institutions, Industrial Establishments are our focus. However, we bend backwards to accommodate high network individuals amongst B2C to gain entry and acquire more clients.

Q. What are the various security related products that you offer? CCTV, Human Access and Vehicle Access Control, Security Intercoms, Video Door Phones, Gate Automation Products, Boom Barriers and Turnstile Gates are a part of the solutions we provide.

Q. What is the advantage of Matrix products vis-Ă -vis the competition? If there is one company in India in the Security Segment that is organised and offers quality products, which perform as per the claims along with a support that is dependable, it is only Matrix. For the Made-in-India wave that is passing through the purchasers, Matrix is the most ideal product to suggest. Hence, it is easy to clinch an order when the customer has a patriotic mindset. It is also easy to get an order if the client wants quality, immediate delivery, reliability and after sales support.

Q. What is your marketing and channel strategy? Customer does not give you time to react so give the best as the first quote. Hence, the presence of a sales person is not much warranted. We are reducing the field selling force and increasing the service support force. All the orders that we acquire with low pricing will still need support. We have to do more volume to handle the drop in profit margins. We would increase the share of business of high value and technically demanding products such as Gate Automation to balance the loss of profit margin.

Q. What is your support strategy? Support is going to be the USP for integrators like us and hence we need to strengthen it further and more. Leaning more on Matrix will ensure low failure rate, dependable service support, information support and hence enhance our USP. Exhibiting our technical knowledge by implementing rarely used features would add respect and credibility in the market.

Q. What are the challenges that you are currently facing in India? Depletion of profits has affected us severely. We are quickly recovering from the situation and will be back to normalcy in a few months. There is a boom in CCTV market and we cannot miss it. How to handle the odds and move ahead is the current challenge.

Q. What kind of plans and expectations do you have for this segment this year? Once the market situation improves and the Real Estate segment picks up we will be able to get back to our positions. It would happen very soon, is our hope.

Cylinder Less Automatic Fire Detection & Suppression System Technology

Universal use: high flexibility of BlazeCut Tube and A, B, C and electrical fires class rating can protect almost any space High cost-effectivity: zero maintenance, long working life, automatic activation beats the competition in cost-effectivity

Stainless steel fittings

No cylinder for storage of extinguishing agent needed: the whole system can be placed inside the protected enclosure Option to connect the pressure switch and other additional components like signaling unit to perform further functions

Pressure gauge Heat sensitive BlazeCut Tube with the extinguishing agent

The system consists of a heat sensitive BlazeCut Tube made of special plastic which is closed by a stainless steel fitting on each end. The BlazeCut Tube has both storage and detection function which means that the extinguishing agent is stored directly in the BlazeCut Tube and no additional storage device such as cylinder is needed. BlazeCut system operates automatically independent of any power supply by detecting higher temperatures. When the temperature in the protected enclosure rises to a critical threshold, the detection tube melts down at the point where the affecting temperature is the highest. Melting the tube creates a hole releasing the entire extinguishing agent stored in the tube onto the source of the fire. BlazeCut “T” Series systems are supplied in various lengths of the tube and volumes of agent. The standard volume of agent ranges from 0,25 kg to 1,0 kg, which is sufficient to protect enclosures with volume between 0,25 m³ and 1,00 m³ respectively.

Clean and effective extinguishing agent: world-wide known and accepted HFC gases (HFC-227ea and HFC-236fa) No pressurization needed: the system works by increasing pressure of the extinguishing agent when heated Automatic operation based on increased temperature: ideal for non-occupied spaces or spaces out of sight Fully independent: system is operational 24/7 without any power supply No maintenance during entire working life = zero maintenance costs Long working life: 5 ~ 6 years depending on the type of application No harm to protected enclosure and people when discharged Very simple installation: no training required for installation Pressure gauge to monitor the pressure at any time

VIVOTEK redefines security standards for hospitality giant

JW Marriott Mussoorie Transforms Analogue video surveillance to IP surveillance in association with Sysware Infotech

R

eformulating security standards for hospitality behemoth, JW Marriott, Mussoorie, Walnut Grove Resort and Spa, VIVOTEK brings the property at par with security standards prevailing across the globe. Counteracting to high security prerequisites, VIVOTEK a leading brand in IP surveillance security, in association with Sysware Infotech, its system integration partner, pivoted the Analogue video surveillance consumer, into an IP surveillance consumer. Edifying its first hospitality client on the downsides of Analogue video surveillance and predicting inadequacies the brand could suffer, VIVOTEK eventually convinced the brand to also transform their security guidelines across the country. Commenting on the successful commissioning of the IP surveillance security system, Sanjeev Gulati, Country

Manager – India & SAARC,VIVOTEK commented, “This project was a significant milestone for VIVOTEK, as it was our pilot hospitality project. Sysware Infotech, our system integration partners, did a thorough survey of the entire terrain and the construction and accordingly we planted solutions. Post the deployment process, the entire commissioning was verified and then a user level training was also conducted. Only after the training, the entire facility was handed over to the in-house team.” Yogesh Mehta, Director, Sysware Infotech Pvt. Ltd. commented, “We had to operate within a given set of guidelines – specifications and budget. Furthermore adding to our strains, were the rough terrain and the climatic conditions. We planted a total of 125 IP network cameras in the resort spread over 25 acres, on a hilly terrain that experiences extreme low temperature and snowfall.” The products deployed in the project include vary-focal indoor dome- FD8131, ultra-mini indoor dome- FD8136, outdoor bullet camera- IP8335H, outdoor speed dome camera - SD8322, and indoor speed dome -SD8121. Each model installed, has different functionality. Post installations; the client applauded the crystal clear picture quality and ease of management with features like remote viewing etc. and also appreciated the reduced number of cables from the cameras to the control room.

Video Surveillance – Beyond Security Part III

HEAT & FLOW MAPS Analytics is revolutionizing retail

T

oday’s Stores are not merely interested in what the Customer buys. They also want to know how the Customer shops, where the customers walk and what items they stop to touch and pick up. Knowing where customers move is extremely useful for retailers. It allows them to optimize their store layout and strategize about where to place popular vs. unpopular and expensive vs. cheap merchandise. A Heat Map is the graphical representation of any individual value. The matrix of this representation is represented by colours. The different colours that are seen in this graphical representation have different meaning or depict different values for different data. Heat Maps show the ‘customer hotspots’ on the shop floor which

56

DECEMBER 2016 | www.ind-safety.com

can be a proxy for areas generating the maximum revenue. It allows store managers to have, at a glance, a view of its customers’ behaviour. A Flow Map in a retail environment gives an indication of the movement of customers within a business from the time they enter to the time they leave.

Flow Maps provide information on the ‘movement of customers’ as well as the ‘trends for different directions’ on the shop floor.

Benefits to Retailers These video analysis tools help the store promote product most effectively. They help Identify the following: • Hot spots - busiest areas of the store • Dead areas • Bottlenecks • Store traffic • Category and product traffic performance • Shopper flow - the way they move in the store • Store zone activity • Dwell time - how long clients stay in different areas

Water Mist System (Hydrant & Sprinkler)

They also assist the following functions: • Queue management • Service optimization • Analyze existing marketing & promotions • Optimize store layout • Adjust staffing to accommodate shopper flow • Adjust pricing to manage existing as well as incoming inventory • Identify marketing and promotion opportunities • Maximize customer loyalty

Application Examples Groceries They tend to place their highest margin items at the very front of the store and by the checkout aisle. Research has also shown that people are more likely to purchase items on the right-hand side of an aisle. Analysis makes it possible to measure the effectiveness of such product positioning. Clothing retailers Knowing where customers move is extremely useful for retailers. It allows them to optimize their store layout and strategize about where to place popular vs. unpopular and expensive vs. cheap merchandise. The data can also help identify pricing problems. For example, if lots of people are touching an item but few are

58

DECEMBER 2016 | www.ind-safety.com

actually buying it, then it suggests that the merchandise is too expensive. A Heat Map would make it possible for the retailer to realize that an item really isn’t selling and should therefore be relegated to a less prominent location.

Summary • Images captured by the network cameras are analysed by the Video Analytics system to create in-store Heat and Flow maps. • Heat and Flow maps make in-Store Retail operations smooth and fast. These also help in making in-store retailing more efficient and productive. • Heat and Flow maps are helping retailers track what the customers touch, what they ignore, and where they walk. This is achieved in ‘real-time’ and therefore helps the Store to optimize layouts, thereby improving profitability.

SAFETY

KYT – Hazard Prediction Technique for Zero Accident Through Zero Accident Campaign KYT – Hazard Prediction Technique for Zero Accident is comes under the zero-accident campaign which is an ideological campaign that focuses on the concept of respect for human beings. It is also a practical campaign that considers in detail what methods are to be used to release and promote the concept and how these methods are to be practiced in the field. Safety cannot be attained by a mere theory or just doing what you are told. You need to understand the concept (idea) and learn practical methods (techniques) to practice and achieve zero accidents. The zero-accident campaign consists of three elements; an idea, method, and practice, and it cannot function if any one of these elements is absent. KEYWORDS: KYT, Zero-accident

Mr. R.R. Deoghare Dy. Director at National Safety Council, Navi Mumba

1. INTRODUCTION Predicting hazards and preemptive safety and health • The first line work operation is to have small groups of people work together as a team. These small groups are assigned a leader who is called a foreman or team leader. • Short-term meetings, centering on the small group leader and covering work operation, are held when work begins, upon arrival at the job site, before operations begin, during work operations, and at the close of operations. • To prevent accidents due to human error

70

DECEMBER 2016 | www.ind-safety.com

and ensure safety and health on a constant basis at front lines, it is necessary to sufficiently provide “team actions for preempting hazards” for voluntary discovering, understanding, and resolving hazards lurking at job sites or in work procedures by holding these short-term leader-oriented meetings and by enhancing each worker’s sensitivity to hazards, concentration, problem-solving capability, and motivation to practice such actions. • Hazard prediction training (KYT), as practiced under the zero-accident campaign, is a form of short-term (hazard), solving training. It is carried out by everyone at job sites or by individuals on a short-term basis as training in predicting hazards; in other words, a means of preemptive safety and health. • Because it is individual workers who actually perform tasks at job sites, it is necessary to confirm hazard points and safety at critical points in accordance with job site situation and conditions, by a process of “point and call” during operational procedures, so as to prevent accidents due to human error. Consequently, KYT involves “point and call” “point and repeat,” and these procedures are practiced as a single, unified endeavor.

2. OUTLINE OF KYT KYT involves the following operations: • Model sheets describing the job site situation and operations are used, or work is performed using actual work pieces at job sites or shown how to operate. • Hazard factors (unsafe actions or situations that could cause accidents or injuries to workers) lurking at job sites or in operational procedures, and the phenomena (accident patterns) which such hazard factors bring about. • Are discussed, considered and comprehended by small groups at job sites (or through soliloquy by individuals). • Hazard points and action goals are determined and confirmed through “point and repeat” or items for “point and call” are confirmed. • Preemptive actions are taken prior to conducting activities to ensure safety and health. KYT is a method whereby information on hazards is gathered, discussed, and shared. Its aim is to enhance sensitivity and problem-solving capabilities in response to hazards, to determine hazard points and action goals, and to impress them in the subconscious mind in the course of intensively discussing and resolving such hazards.

| TECH UPDATE

KYT is also a method whereby alertness is enhanced through a process of “point and call” at critical points during work. Workers are more alert in the conscious mind so that they act in a way that ensures safety. From the time of birth, a person goes through a certain pattern of learning, and as a result, human activities are almost all patterns of habit; they are determined unconsciously and the body is left to move about naturally without conscious control. It is said that the individual is regulated, deep within, by his or her own subconscious mind. For this reason, it is important that one be fully alert when information on hazards is presented so that it will take root in the subconscious mind and result in new habits; so that at each critical point arises naturally in the conscious mind as a new habit. Once an awareness or habit has taken root, it is very difficult to change it. And when something is taken to be true, but based on erroneous knowledge, the body responds accordingly without the individual even being aware of it. In KYT, hazard points and action goals are identified and created by professional colleagues familiar with the work at job sites, and nothing is more proper than to do this. Therefore, it is important to firmly impress hazards points and action goals upon the individual’s subconscious mind with KYT, through the process of “point and repeat,” so that the body reacts without the individual even being aware of it. It is also important to provoke these impressions on the conscious level through “point and call” at each critical point in the course of work operations.

3. OBJECTIVE OF KYT • Not carried out despite having the knowledge and ability You have the necessary knowledge and skills. Of course you understand the countermeasures and should be able to carry them out. Yet those countermeasures were not carried out, and as a result, an accident occurred. Even with the knowledge and skills, the proper tasks were not completed. Why? There are three cases relevant to this question. 1. Lack of sensitivity made the worker not recognize the hazard, so nothing was done- Sharpen your sensitivity 2. Workers were careless and absent-mind-

72

DECEMBER 2016 | www.ind-safety.com

ed, so nothing was done.–Enhance your alertness. 3. Nothing was done because there was no motivation to do anything from the outset.-Boost your motivation to act. • Sharpening sensitivity KYT involves cultivating intuitive awareness of hazards as such and sharpening your sensitivity towards it. When a situation is hazardous, intuition should tell workers that something is wrong, that there is some hazard, and that caution should be heeded. That there is something strange is clearly sensed. This type of intuition is referred to as sensitivity. Originally, human sensitivity to hazards used to be very keen. Amid the rapid advancement of our material (machine) culture, however, this sensitivity has often been inadequate, dull, weak or even faulty. To cultivate and heighten such sensitivity is the main objective of KYT. However, if KYT is held only once or twice a month, it is impossible to maintain such sensitivity at a high level for a long time. Short-term KY activities must be carried out repeatedly, day by day, at each critical point in order to ensure that sensitivity to hazards remain sharp. • Enhancing alertness In the course of hazard prediction training, alertness is cultivated because the training takes place over a short time period, during which model sheets, for example, are used to identify hazards at job sites and in work operations, and countermeasures must be determined. KYT also enhances alertness by practicing a determined “point and call” at each critical point in the course of work operations, and thus prevents absent-mindedness or carelessness on the job. What is meant by the critical points in work operations are the hazard points. The aim of KYT is to have hazard points isolated and alertness enhanced by “point and call” that is directly aimed to such hazard points so that accidents due to human error (that is, human imperfections such as false recognition, carelessness, shortcut reactions, or skipping procedures) caused by human characteristics can be prevented. “Point and call” helps workers shift gears,

so to speak, so that the worker’s awareness level becomes clear and normal. Reciting action goals or “touch and call” procedures also helps to enhance team member’s concentration and strengthen solidarity or unity among team members. • Improvement of problem-solving abilities While detailed, executable countermeasures are devised in response to noticed hazards, and as key points are identified, KYT helps to build resourcefulness in solving problems associated with hazards. • Boosting motivation to act Through hazard prediction training, the motivation to act decisive is boosted in the course of open talks on any hazard. KY activities and “point and call” only become effective when they are carried out, not as passive measures, but as active efforts pursued eagerly by each individual. This eagerness or motivation is brought out in the course of open talks on what the hazard is, where it lies hidden, and how it can be dealt with. It is in the process of determining the current status of a hazard, searching out its essential characteristics, and devising ways to remove it through open dialog that one’s motivation to act is strengthened. Through open discussions over short time periods (3 minutes or 5 minutes), KYT based on the four-round method fosters a strong spirit of agreement in taking action. • Creating an ideal work environment KYT not only aims to solve hazards at workplaces. Through repeating discussions to discover, understand and resolve hazards lurking at workplaces with the participation of everyone at the workplace, KYT is ultimately aimed at creating a bright and lively working environment with zero accidents, in which everyone participates with the idea of preempting problems or hazards. Viewed from a long-term perspective, it is not likely that only safety has been improved and other problems associated with production or quality remained unsolved. The sensitivity and teamwork for predicting hazards and anticipating safety will work on all voluntary efforts to resolve problems.
