CEO CORNER Technology Adoption - The key to success Over the last decade, India has witnessed noteworthy improvement in the awareness towards fire safety and security. The rapidly expanding IT and retail markets across the country have substantially contributed towards the growth of the fire safety equipments sector, and this trend is likely to continue over the coming years. Since, areas such as large refineries, petrochemical complexes, biotechnology ventures, pharmaceutical, automobile, steel, oil & gas exploration projects and other manufacturing projects require mandatory specialized installations in terms of fire protection equipments; the market for fire safety equipments in India is set to grow at much faster pace than anticipated. In terms of security , we are seeing large enterprises increase their security budgets to enhance their security programme, and several midmarket and enterprise organisations are creating new space for security spending as part of their technology budget. India has made significant progress in various spheres of science and technology over the years and can now take pride in having a strong network of S&T institutions, trained manpower and an innovative knowledge base. Given the rapid pace of globalisation, fast-depleting material resources, increasing competition among nations and the growing need to protect intellectual property, strengthening the knowledge base is an important issue. As India has potential & inherent excellence, there is great scope for Indian fire safety & security industry to rise with recent technology transformation, we sure that soon Indian fire safety & security industry becomes the superpower on the horizon.

Ziehl-Abegg showcased ZAbluefin for central air-conditioning control units at ISH in Frankfurt “The trade fair stand was repeatedly inundated with visitors” to the delight of Peter Fenkl, Chairman of the Board of Ziehl-Abegg. The main focus of interest was on the innovative fan ZAbluefin which increases efficiency by up to 15 percent. “That’s why our engineers have clearly underlined their position at the forefront of bionics and as leaders in fan technology” emphasises Fenkl.” The development engineers studied the physical structure and characteristics of the humpback whale in order to transfer elements to the new radial impeller ZAvblue. It’s also the reason why the marine biologist Dr. Karsten Brensing spoke at the opening of Ziehl-Abegg’s presence at the trade fair. The acknowledged expert on whales explained to visitors how the 30-ton marine mammals live and hunt - and in this context are dependent on being extremely agile. Evolution has optimised the animal’s body for movement through the water so they are also capable of undertaking journeys covering several thousand kilometres with a minimal expenditure of energy. CEO Fenkl explained which elements of the humpback whale are replicated in the radial impeller ZAvblue: for example, the leading edge of the fan blade has an undulating profile – this is modelled on the golf-ball sized bumps (technical term: tubercle) on the whale’s fins. This avoids

excessive turbulence, reducing both flow losses and noise. The flow engineers have also taken a close look at the whale’s rear fin, the “fluke”. The v-shaped contour of the rear section of the wing delays potential flow breaks – enabling the fan to be used for numerous different pressure ranges. The latest generation of radial fans at Ziehl-Abegg in sizes from 710 mm, is now benefitting from this knowledge which has been gained in the field of bionics. The product name ZAbluefin comes from the English. The experts at Ziehl-Abegg spent about two years on the new radial impeller for central air conditioning control units and industrial ventilation. A bionic profile has proven very effective in terms of efficiency and low-noise. Unlike hollow blades which are currently commercially available, the bionic profile blades have no gaps that allow dirt or condensation to penetrate and which would not only lead to corrosion but also create an imbalance. The steel is therefore compressed into a corrugated shape using
example, the trailing edges of the ventilator blades recreate the flight of an owl. “As the quietest bird of prey, we have already used the owl as a model for a number of designs” says Fenkl. Serrated trailing edges on fans have since become one of Ziehl-Abegg’s trademarks. On the new fan however the edges have been modified and softened. So, the innovative fan combines knowledge gained from aerodynamics (ornithology) as well as hydrodynamics (marine biology).
a 600-ton press, creating the bionic profile, giving additional strength and reducing weight. “And a more lightweight design protects the bearings in the motor” adds Fenkl. The new radial impeller not only possesses bionic features of the whale. It also incorporates bionic elements of the owl. For

Important fire protection advice for businesses on 4 films Film 4: Electrical devices
A mass of fire hazards endangers industrial and trade companies – the good news is that most of these threats are well-known to insur-ers. Four films, produced by the German Insurance Association (GDV) and VdS, Europe´s No.1 institute for fire protection, now offer important knowledge on
these matters. They visualize typical fire hazards in industrial and business enterprises and explain complex technical circumstances. Therefore the films can be used as an aid in advising policyholders in fire protection. They are also suitable for the training of staff and as a teaching tool in fire
protection training. The clips cover the following subject areas: Film 1: Storage of combustible materials close to buildings Film 2: Fire loads in production and storage areas Film 3: Machinery fire hazards
“Those films visualize the mostly complex issues of fire protection and make them lightly understandable, thus strongly easing optimal fire protection”, explains Alexander Küsel, Head of Loss Prevention Property Insurance at the GDV. “They answer, among other things, typical questions usually arising at risk inspections of fire insurance providers and explain the impact of fire as well as appropriate steps for optimal loss prevention.” The DVD in both German and English with a running time of more than 30 minutes is available for 29, 90 € (excl. shipping and VAT). CP PLUS Secures Transit for Zydus School Kids in Ahmedabad Zydus School of Excellence (ZSE) has been one of the most prominent schools in Godhavi, Ahmadabad. Spread over 9 acres of, ZSE Godhavi comprises of the pre-primary, primary, secondary, and higher secondary sections, housing over 1000 children. The school runs its own fleet of busses that transits students to and fro the school, and of late the management has been looking for a way to secure and manage its bus services more efficiently.
Mission The Zydus school busses run long haul to pick up and drop children from different corners of the town. Delays in pickups and drops often become a matter of concern for both parents and school authority. Confronted by the safety of its students while on their way to and fro the school, ZSE realized its busses needed surveillance for a more secure and reliable
transit. Moreover, having its busses monitored would help them keep track of the behavior of the vehicle/ driver and keep a check on any discrepancies therein.
Solution A total of 33 busses ply every day to transport ZSE students from their homes to the school and back. Having surveyed the busses, and the kind of routes that they take each day, a comprehensive solution was designed. Each bus was fitted with 2 high resolution analog cameras, installed at its entry and exit points, and a CP PLUS stateof-the-art MDVR with HDD for recording. Ideal for mobile surveillance, CP PLUS MDVRs offer tamper proof, shock proof, and anti-vibration features, courtesy their unique rugged design, for worry free recording. These MDVRs are further GPS enabled to tag video evidence with the
current location. Also included in the solution is enterprise-level data management software to monitor and manage end-to-end evidence. The challenge however was the short time within which the project needed to be delivered, also subject to the availability of the vehicles. Limited access to electricity also posed a significant challenge, requiring the use of special battery operated tools.
Impact The solution offered by CP PLUS completely satisfied the surveillance demands of the school management:
the management was able to track the movement of all their busses at all times easily. Implementing these solutions not just ensured that the busses were punctual, but also kept a track of the students, driver behavior and anyone other than the designated people within the vehicles. “The project was challenging with a very short TAT, and the dependence on the availability of the vehicles. However, the project was delivered within the stipulated time frame, and the results thereafter satisfied the customer, thereby making the project a success.” Mehul Goswami, Addon Technology.

to date, offering operators a stunning visual experience. Designed for use in control rooms, the HVD features some unique innovations that boost reliability, lower Total Cost of Ownership (TCO), and minimize maintenance needs. Barco’s family of narrow-bezel
LCD video walls couple the traditional advantages of tiled LCD video walls – excellent image quality, minimum space requirement, and an advantageous price setting – with innovations to ensure availability and optimize TCO. The new OverView
HVD5521 now joins this portfolio, with a screen diagonal of 55” and a brightness of 700 cd/m². Its extremely narrow total bezel width of only 1.8 mm (measured between screens) enhances the visual consistency of the video wall, making it better suited

for content that spans multiple displays. Because control rooms are highly critical environments, uptime of all components needs to be assured. This means that not only must component failure be avoided, but also that maintenance time must be kept to a minimum. To counter the classic problem with color and brightness level shifts in LCD video walls, Barco developed the unique Sense X automatic color and brightness calibration system based on integrated color sensors. This technology automatically balances the video wall at all times, eliminating the
need for expensive and time-consuming manual calibration. This not only optimizes uptime, but also contributes to the wall’s low TCO. Furthermore, the optional redundant external power supply automatically switches to a new unit if one should fail, eliminating downtime due to power supply
failure. And because the power supply is located remotely, its maintenance can be performed without disturbing operations. Plus, any staff member (not only certified technicians) can replace a defective power supply unit − so this system also reduces labor cost. Near-seamless, great colors,
high brightness and reliability “The trend in the LCD video wall market is toward the narrowest bezel possible,” says Pietro Capretta, Product Manager at Barco. “And the OverView HVD accelerates this trend. We are very proud of this product, which demonstrates our continued commitment and investment in the tiled LCD video wall market. In addition to the near-seamless canvas, the great colors and high brightness and reliability make this display stand out. It’s the perfect addition to our LCD video wall portfolio – and will further expand our footprint in this market.”

British Safety Council – The past, present and future The British Safety Council held a gala film night, hosted by eminent film critic Mark Kermode, to demonstrate the contribution it has made to improving health and safety over the last 60 years. In the grand setting of the Regent Street cinema, the charity and membership organisation showcased on 23 March, in a film festival style, its 60 years history, recent achievements and plans for the future.
The past The film British Safety Council at 60 launched the evening of celebrations. It tells the story of the creation of the British Safety Council in 1957 and its growth as a significant campaigning organisation that transformed health and safety. Using long lost archival footage, the film focuses on the life and work of James Tye, the organisation’s charismatic, and sometimes controversial, founder as he tried to improve health and safety at a time when hundreds of people were being killed at work each year and when laws to protect workers were inadequate and piecemeal. The film includes footage of James at work and his campaigning and training activities, as well as photographs with celebrities, such as Barbara Windsor. Guests at the event were also presented with a book, Beware! Watchdog with fearsome bark, which features historic posters and other documents commissioned by the British

Safety Council in all their colourful and vibrant glory. The tile of the book refers to an article written for The Financial Times by James Tye in 1978. Authored by Mike Esbester, senior lecturer in History at the University of Portsmouth, the book shows how this material both reflected the values of British society and tried to change them.
The present Since 1957, the British Safety Council has been advising on risk, helping both employers and the general public to understand and manage its consequences in pursuit of the charity’s vision that no-one should be injured or made ill at work. To mark its 60th anniversary, the British Safety Council launched a competition challenging young filmmakers to share their understanding of risk in a short film format. The competition attracted nearly 50 entries from young people in Britain and around the world. The films were judged by a panel of filmmakers and critics, including Richard Bracewell, a film director best known for the feature film Bill,
and the deputy editor of Sight & Sound, Kieron Corless. The winning film Me, Miphone & I, by Juan CruzHernández, a student and camera operator from London, is a powerful warning against a very modern phenomenon – the alienating effects of mobile technology. Equipped with boxes of popcorn, the guests also watched the four other competition finalists: Inertia, by Nikhil Sudersanan, a filmediting student from Kerala, India; Flight Risk, by Scottish independent filmmaker Sean Hall; Let’s Plan a Holiday, by English independent filmmaker Shanil Kawol and Risk, by Kate Haley, a student of English Literature at Trinity College, Dublin.
The future “It’s difficult to predict how we will live and work in the future,” said Mark Kermode, introducing the next film: Future risk: the next 60 years. “However, it’s important that we try, as the way we work have a profound impact on our health and wellbeing. If we understand these changes, we will be
better prepared to deal with them.” Reflecting a wide-ranging debate between thought leaders and academics, including Professor Cary Cooper, PwC’s Michael Rendell and the International Labour Organisation’s Deputy Director General, Deborah Greenfield, the film explores the impact of automation, the rise of the gig economy and an ageing workforce. It concludes with the ultimate question: does work itself have a future? The 60th anniversary celebration night was also an opportunity to raise funds for Labour Behind the Label, a charity campaigning to improve the working conditions of garment workers worldwide. Talking at a press conference before the event, Caroline Lewis, Director of Fundraising at Labour Behind the Label, reminded how poor conditions can lead to a tragedy, such as the Rana Plaza factory collapse in Bangladesh in 2013, in which 1,100 workers died. She also spoke about the responsibilities of organisations to guarantee health and safety standards through their supply chain. Reflecting on the evening, Mike Robinson, Chief Executive of the British Safety Council, said: “The British Safety Council has a great spirit. Today’s celebrations clearly demonstrate that we have a lot to feel proud of, as well as many challenges and opportunities to address as we look forward to the next 60 years.”

Cylinder Less Automatic Fire Detection & Suppression System Technology
Universal use: high flexibility of BlazeCut Tube and A, B, C and electrical fires class rating can protect almost any space High cost-effectivity: zero maintenance, long working life, automatic activation beats the competition in cost-effectivity
Stainless steel fittings
No cylinder for storage of extinguishing agent needed: the whole system can be placed inside the protected enclosure Option to connect the pressure switch and other additional components like signaling unit to perform further functions
Pressure gauge Heat sensitive BlazeCut Tube with the extinguishing agent
The system consists of a heat sensitive BlazeCut Tube made of special plastic which is closed by a stainless steel fitting on each end. The BlazeCut Tube has both storage and detection function which means that the extinguishing agent is stored directly in the BlazeCut Tube and no additional storage device such as cylinder is needed. BlazeCut system operates automatically independent of any power supply by detecting higher temperatures. When the temperature in the protected enclosure rises to a critical threshold, the detection tube melts down at the point where the affecting temperature is the highest. Melting the tube creates a hole releasing the entire extinguishing agent stored in the tube onto the source of the fire. BlazeCut “T” Series systems are supplied in various lengths of the tube and volumes of agent. The standard volume of agent ranges from 0,25 kg to 1,0 kg, which is sufficient to protect enclosures with volume between 0,25 m³ and 1,00 m³ respectively.
Clean and effective extinguishing agent: world-wide known and accepted HFC gases (HFC-227ea and HFC-236fa) No pressurization needed: the system works by increasing pressure of the extinguishing agent when heated Automatic operation based on increased temperature: ideal for non-occupied spaces or spaces out of sight Fully independent: system is operational 24/7 without any power supply No maintenance during entire working life = zero maintenance costs Long working life: 5 ~ 6 years depending on the type of application No harm to protected enclosure and people when discharged Very simple installation: no training required for installation Pressure gauge to monitor the pressure at any time

NEC’s Video Face Recognition Technology ranks First in NIST Testing NEC Corporation (NEC; TSE: 6701) announced that NEC’s face recognition technology achieved the highest performance evaluation in the recent Face in Video Evaluation (FIVE, *1) testing performed by the U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) (*2). Results were released in NIST’s Interagency Report 8173: Face In Video Evaluation (FIVE) Face Recognition of Non-Cooperative Subjects. NEC’s face recognition technology took first place for the fourth consecutive time following the 2009 Multiple Biometric Grand Challenge (MBGC 2009), 2010-2011 Multiple Biometrics Evaluation (MBE 2010-2011), and 2013 Face Recognition Vendor Test (FRVT 2013). Video face recognition technology identifies the faces of moving subjects in realtime as they walk naturally without stopping in front of a camera. The benefits of highspeed video analysis enabled by this technology include the prevention of potential incidents through detection of suspicious individuals and recognition of individuals at the gateways of critical facilities. Using video images from standard cameras for face recognition requires highlyadvanced techniques when compared to still images. This is because images are greatly influenced by environmental conditions, such as camera location, image quality, lighting and subject size, in addition
42
MARCH 2017 | www.ind-safety.com
to the behavior of a subject, including walking speed, face direction and sight line. To achieve reliable face recognition of a video image, NEC developed feature point extraction technology that enables enhanced face recognition to a level where an individual can be identified with high precision from within a group, even if their face is partially hidden, or the image is taken from different angles. NEC’s face recognition technology also uses deep learning technologies for face matching to increase accuracy to a level where an individual can be identified by a low resolution face image captured by a distant camera. “It is a great honor that our face recognition technology received a first place evaluation for the fourth consecutive time from the NIST,” said Masakazu Yamashina, Senior Vice President, NEC Corporation.
“We will further expand global business by offering innovative biometric solutions, such as the video face recognition system, throughout a wide range of fields, including security, transportation, finance and retail.”
Evaluation examples from the NIST FIVE testing • Entry-exit management at an airport passenger gate Tests were conducted to recognize one individual at a time as they walk through an area without stopping or acknowledging the camera. NEC’s face recognition technology won first place with a matching accuracy of 99.2%. The error rate of 0.8% is less than one-fourth of the second place error rate. • Detection of suspicious individuals at an indoor stadium Tests were conducted with
an individual situated far from the camera with their face direction changing frequently. NEC’s face recognition technology won first place with an error rate half that of the second place error rate. For nearly 30 years, NEC has been developing face recognition technology by defining it as one of the key technologies to help achieve a safer and more secure society. The technology has now been implemented in more than 100 systems in 40 countries worldwide. NEC will continue to develop solutions that leverage face recognition technology as part of its portfolio of AI technologies “NEC the Wise” (*3), and to deliver the solutions for a wide range of fields, including social infrastructure and private sector facilities. United Manufacturing Company :
The legacy of perfection Every year new machineries are added so that quality product can be delivered. We are in the phase of developing new vehicles with more technical superiority but its too early to comment on it.
Q. What impact do you see of digital India on your business?
Mr. Inderpreet Singh, Director United Manufacturing Company
Q. Fire industry in India is on rise despite of some hackles of demonetisation etc. What prospects do you see as young entrepreneur? Fire Industry has shown enormous growth in the past 10 years. Demonetisation in my opinion hasn’t affected this industry much, reason being all the purchases are majorly done by public sector and moreover these purchases are not ‘’unaccounted’’. Hence the impact of cash squeeze is minimal. In fact, according to me the demand is likely to increase for the fire vehicles in the coming future as there has been increase in the awareness and continuous development in this segment.
Digital India has contributed a lot uptill now and will continue to contribute in the future as well. Company like ours is using this channel to showcase our product line and get some good potential orders out of it, which is helping us to grow and expand further.
Q. How fire fraternity of India will be benefited from “Make in India” program? Fire fraternity will be benefited in a huge way. This step should have been taken a long back only, but its good to be late than never. Company like us will be able to showcase our talent and compete with the foreign goods. We Indians believe in chances and i guess it is a brilliant opportunity for fire industry to deliver quality products of same standards as those of their foreign competitors.
Q. What innovative technologies or product you are adding to the portfolio of UMC?
Q. Do you see any useful link with start up India program with your business?
Our plant is always upgraded time to time so as to deliver goods to our prestigious customers right on schedule, infact prior to our commitment also if i may add.
Truthfully speaking, ‘’No’’ as the amount of capital required is quiet huge for maintaining the quality standards as our products are life saving products but the
44

current scenario is changing rapidly. So can’t speak of the future as of now.
Q. How you plan to accelerate growth of your business? Its quiet simple, try to be the best in what you do and produce quality product. Fullfilling your commitment, and constantly introducing new technology in the productline and last but not the least, let the work speak on your behalf rather than you.
Q. What manpower planning mean to you & how do you invest for maximum output? Manpower planning is very crucial in my opinion as for us to grow as a company, we need a dedicated and committed team for fulfilling our goals and promises made to our clients. We do invest a huge amount on manpower personnel. We have a dedicated team of Engineers that are constantly introducing new technologies in our vehicles and a dedicated team for R&D Department. We also have a specialised department for marketing wherein the team is putting in efforts to market our product ethically.
Q. What is your management style? My management style is pretty simple, I am open to any kind of discussions, suggestions or criticising as i believe this makes the workplace a more comfortable place to work at and the management gets the feeling of belongingness.
Q. Any message for the readers? Be you. Dont be a part of any race. You’ll automatically start getting success once you will start being the real you. My mantra has always been to ‘’Do what you want to do’’.

Impact of GST on Indian Security Market Report Q. What are implications of GST on security products, solutions and services It is too early to say how it will impact the security products, solutions and services. We are waiting for the new tax structure in products and services to be introduced. Security Promotion Group of India has made multiple representations and recently filed a petition to our Hon’ble Prime Minister Sh. Narendra Modi to include Security Products and Services under “Merit” list so that they can be included in 5% GST category. At present, in most of the states most of the Security Products are under 12.5% to 15.5% VAT, 4% Differential Excise on CCTV without Input credit and 12.5% excise with input credit for remaining products and 15 percent for services. Tax on Software always has been a debateable issue. In most cases, we need to pay VAT as well as Service Tax on it so after implementation of GST, it would be a single tax, whatever it maybe. Similar would be the case for Services, whether installation, repairs or AMC, we are liable to pay VAT, Service Tax and in most states Work Contract Tax (WCT), only GST will be paid. Moreover, there will be less complexities when we sell products from one state to the other as we don’t have to pay multiple taxes like CST, Entry Tax, Octroi, etc. which would be helpful in expanding market nationally. Things will become less complicated. There will be less compliant and regulatory issues. Overall, it will help the entire economy.
Q. How GST will turn in to boon for the Industry? If our industry demand of inclusion of Security Products and Services in “Merit”
50
MARCH 2017 | www.ind-safety.com
list is accepted, it would be a major boon for the industry. If it is not included in Merit List, it may go to 18% Category with most of the Consumer products. If it comes in Merit list, the cost of products and service would go down by almost 15%, which will make them affordable and more people going for it.
Q. What are the hidden challenges GST will offer? The biggest challenge GST is going to offer is payment of GST at the time of removal of stocks from the factory even in the case of Branch Transfers. It is going to add pressure on working capital requirements, which is always a major issue for manufacturers.
Q. How GST will help to bolster growth of security Industry? GST will turn India into one common market, leading to greater ease of doing business and big savings in logistics costs. Brands are also likely to pass on to consumers cost benefits they will get from consolidating their warehouses and efficiently managing inventory. GST will bring in ease of doing business as they may no longer need to set up state specific entities and transfer stocks to them and invest heavily into logistics of creating warehouses in each state across the country.
Q. How Tax reforms and sops can help security industry? For increasing demand, attraction in the form of tax sops is important. If companies are given higher rate of depreciation or rebate in Income Tax on installation of Security Products, definitely more and more companies and individuals
Mr. Sanjeev Sehgal, Managing Director, Sparsh
will go for it. And to attract more manufacturing of Security products, incentives are important. Removal of Basic customs duty on components for CCTV Cameras and recorders in last year Union budget and biometric sensors and readers in this year Union budget have been welcomed by the industry and we are going to see lot much manufacturing happening in India in coming years.

India’s SECURITY SURVEILLANCE market has a lot of space & potential Operational since 17 years, VIVOTEK has established itself as a leading brand in the global security surveillance arena. The company is eyeing huge opportunities in the Indian market driven by increased IT and security spending, as well as the government’s increased focus on combating terrorism and curbing crime. In an exclusive interview, Sanjeev Gulati, Country Manager-India & SAARC, VIVOTEK talks in detail about the key technology trends in the security surveillance space, the company’s India-specific products and its three-point strategy to stay ahead of the competition. Excerpts: is expected to grow bigger in security surveillance as well.
Q. Last year, you entered a strategic partnership with Videonetics for greater capabilities in integrated License Plate Recognition (LPR). How has this partnership helped you strengthen your position in India.
Mr. Sanjeev Gulati Country Manager-India & SAARC, VIVOTEK
Q. In your view, which is the most significant technology trend influencing the security surveillance market. Security surveillance market in India has grown by leaps and bounds and innovation and integration of technology has a major role to play in it. While IP surveillance is projected to supersede Analog CCTV technology in the coming years, there are other technology trends which will aid this growth further. One such technology that will influence the security surveillance market is video intelligence, with intelligent audio systems, access control and intercom. Likewise, IoT will also play an important role in security surveillance with IT hacks transforming themselves in to IoT hacks. As a solution to this problem, cyber security will also play a major role in security surveillance. Last but not the least, high-definition technology
54
MARCH 2017 | www.ind-safety.com
As I mentioned earlier, technology is going to be a major influence in the growth of security surveillance market and our association with Videonetics is in coordination to this trend. Providing solutions has been a long-term plan for VIVOTEK since six years. By leveraging our ecosystem partners’ domain know-how in certain verticals and applications we have gained the ability to quickly develop the right solutions for our customers. The partners in our ecosystem are mostly third-party software and hardware companies like VMS and systems integrators. Videonetics aids us with video intelligence, which is the way forward in the security surveillance segment. As partners we have had the opportunity to exhibit our products at several globally renowned exhibitions. The most recent of them all was Secutech India, a flagship show of Intersec Dubai catering to leading Security & Safety companies around the world.
Q. How do you perceive India as a market, what are the opportunities and challenges? India’s security surveillance market has a lot of space and potential. These opportunities are led by atrocities like rise
in terrorism, growing crime rates, data theft etc. Apart from that, increasing necessities of remote monitoring, growth of public infrastructure, increasing IT spending, increasing security spending have opened newer avenues for security surveillance like never before. However, with opportunities come challenges and security segment is no exception. In India we are still countering issues with network connectivity and bandwidth and cumbersome procedures. Additionally, we still don’t have a regulatory authority that could certify products. Poor infrastructure, especially in rural India, natural disasters, and terrorism are some of the major challenges faced by India, especially in projects commissioned by the government. Furthermore, difficult geographical terrains present unique transportation and storage requirements and lack of adequate amenities like better roads and power problems etc., add to issues.
Q. Please tell us about your Indiaspecific products. We have launched H.265/HEVC series solutions including 2-megapixel to 5-megapixel network cameras, network video recorders, and video management software. By employing H.265 compression technology and utilizing VIVOTEK’s Smart Stream II technology, these cameras can reduce both bandwidth and storage consumption by up to 80% while retaining the highest standards in image quality. We expect to see more and more India projects implement H.265/HEVC solution in the near feature.

CP PLUS solutions secures highly sensitive Sheela Foam plants S
heela Group is a leading name in the Polyurethane (PU) foam industry running successful brands like Sleepwell, Feather Foam, and Lamiflex. A multi-billion entity, this Indian based foam manufacturing company has its wings spread across 25 countries across the world. Cognizant of the numerous projects that it has successfully delivered with its wide portfolio of products and solutions, the SG management approached CP PLUS for a tailored solution that will help address their pain points.
Mission The manufacture of polyurethane foam entails a complex hazardous process; the chemicals used to in its development are high on the risk quotient, and require being handled with extreme caution. Such is the susceptibility to fire hazards that the plants are devoid of electrical connections, and work in natural light and air. Despite stringent procedural norms that the employees had to adhere to, the management felt a pressing need for remote monitoring of the manufacturing lines and processes within the plants so as to ensure that the equipment, chemicals, and other inventory are being handled properly. Keeping a close watch on the facilities such that incidents (largely fire threats) could be instantly detected and responded to was also high on their agenda.
Challenges The plants were expansive located in

enclosures outside the sheds to prevent loss of recordings in the event of any mishap. Additionally, a secondary backup was designed via IP network in the NAS unit, which was installed outside the premises inside the guard room.
Impact
remote areas. The challenge was to place cameras such that minimum cabling was required without compromising on the visibility aspect. Additionally, there were constraints on the kind of cables used since the working environment was highly susceptible to fire: only FRLS cables that confirmed to their safety standards were used. Furthermore, all cabling was to be done externally, except for where the cameras were installed.
Solution A total of 9 plants were secured with CP PLUS solutions. Each plant is divided in sheds based on the processes, and solutions designed were in accordance. Each shed was stipulated one network address, and the cluster of these networks (sheds) was then interconnected through a combination of wired and wireless solutions. The underlying idea was to minimize cabling. While of the cabling was done externally (except for where the cameras were installed), the DVRs were neatly tucked away in weather-proof
Having achieved the goals it has set out with, the management was satisfied. 9 different plants are now being monitored from a central control center that has been setup at their corporate head office with a dedicated monitoring team. Remote maintenance and troubleshooting have now become easier, as the management can provide immediate response to incidents without having to be physically present on-site. This contributes greatly to reducing maintenance and managements costs. The management is considering an augmentation of the existing network to meet their plant expansions needs. Also underway are plans to build a central Control Room at their head office from where all 9 plants can be viewed and monitored. “The project was challenging owing to the hazardous environment within the manufacturing plants. A number of considerations needed to be made when planning the design and layout of its security network. However, when the client expressed satisfaction on successful implementation, our efforts were all worthwhile. Rajan Verma, Sai Communications

Video Surveillance for
SAFE AND SMART CITIES A city isn’t smart if people don’t feel safe
I
t is believed that by 2030, the world’s population would be 8.5 billion and would increase to 9.7 billion by 2050 and 11.2 billion by 2100. Half of humanity today lives in cities. Many cities are experiencing exponential growth as people move from rural areas in search of better jobs and education. The services and infrastructure of Cities is being stretched in terms of scalability, environment, and security as they adapt to support this growth in population. Demographic, economic, social and environmental conditions are the major reasons for the dramatic increase in pollution, congestion, noise, crime, terrorist attacks, energy production, traffic accidents, and climate change in the Cities. Cities are the major contributors to the climate problem - they cover less than 2% of the Earth’s surface yet consume 78% of the world’s energy, producing more than 60% of all CO2 emissions.

MARCH 2017 | www.ind-safety.com
A “smart city” means different things to different people. However everyone agrees that smart cities use digital technologies to: • make the city safe - the first step towards making it a smart city • improve the quality of life of the people who live in them • reduce environmental impact • make everyday services run smoothly It is impossible to have a smart city if the citizens of that city don’t feel safe. Video surveillance helps Cities ensure the safety of their traffic and the security of the people on their streets. Video solutions incorporate applications such as license plate recognition, people counting and vehicle tracking. This coupled with video analytics not only provides security for citizens but, among other things, also enables smoother traffic flow, optimization of energy consumption and reduced pollution.
Safe and Smart City Solution Safe Smart City Solutions combine the advanced technologies of Traffic Surveillance with Video Surveillance Systems. Traffic surveillance systems help in providing security in everyday traffic by accurately detecting and recording several types of traffic violations. This also provides irrefutable evidence for local authorities.
TECH UPDATE |
As drivers become aware that all violations could be captured on camera, they are more likely to comply with traffic rules. This considerably reduces the number of collisions and traffic jams. City Surveillance systems make it possible to monitor large-scale areas 24 x 7 and assist the security personnel to maintain security on the streets. The cameras record any suspicious, violent and criminal activity in high-resolution. These recordings are capable of recognizing faces, even at a distance.
Features and functions Traffic surveillance systems • Speeding detection • Wide dynamic range – high megapixel cameras to monitor intersections • Integrated IR flash for night operation mode • Fully automatic operation, only the evaluation process is performed by

Video Analytics - traffic applications • • • • • • •
Stop line violation detection Red light violation detection Bus lane violation detection Wrong-way (No Entry) violation detection Parking violation detection Speeding detection Traffic counting
Typical Solution - Traffic The Traffic Video Surveillance system monitors traffic situations 24/7 and records all the cases of traffic violations
at the intersections. The intersections are monitored by high-end 20 MP cameras. A single camera is able to cover three busy lanes at the same time. An integrated IR flash provides efficient lighting at night. These systems do not simply detect and record the violations. Video content analytics enables automatic license plate recognition to identify the violators. Such systems also integrate with data from external vehicle databases and special customer-managed lists to facilitate the identification process. During the whole process operators are only needed for the confirmation of violations. The system automatically creates detailed violation packages for operators and violation reports for the authorities. Traffic violation detection is performed automatically by Video Content Analysis (VCA) applications. Integrated multilane radar supports the VCA based measurement process to detect speeding violations. The system also ensures imagebased traffic counting that works without physically installed inductive loops.
Citywide video surveillance systems These systems typically deploy the following: • Very high mega pixel panoramic images to monitor vast areas • Leading edge full HD and MP PTZ cameras • Real time monitoring of all cameras • Interface with third-party face recognition systems • PiP camera feature • ePTZ camera feature • Safe policeman feature Video Analytics - Security applications • Abandoned object detection • Graffiti detection

Typical Solution – Security & Safety Video Surveillance of the city gives the Security services a 24x7 window onto everything going on in the city. Using the correct choice of cameras it is possible to view, in real-time, crisp and clear images. It would be possible to view in bright light as well as in the dark. These cameras can scan large areas and zoom in on small details. All this is monitored from a central location. Security personnel can then be quickly dispatched to the right place, at the right time and in adequate strength. This helps citizens feel safer and also help protect facilities and critical infrastructure from threats of all kinds. VCA applications make it possible to automatically identify abandoned objects on streets. VCA applications can help authorities prevent terrorist attacks. VCA-based graffiti detection is also useful, as it helps to preserve the aesthetics of the city. Most Smart City Solutions are able to interface with a third-party automatic face recognition system. This enhances security, as suspicious and blacklisted individuals can be identified in the crowd. Should an ‘incident’ occur, the first objective is to ensure that relevant video footage is taken immediately after the incident, and the second is to allow a quick and efficient response in real time. This can be achieved by coupling

detection sensors, motorized Pan-TiltZoom (PTZ) cameras and a centralized VMS.
Conclusion • Smarter cameras provide greater capabilities beyond mere generation and transmission of video. • They communicate with the central management system over the network. • They deliver video analytics output - alarms, metadata along with the associated video stream. • These cameras serve as multipurpose sensors, providing visual as well as scene related data to a central hub, where it can be further interfaced with other types of information arriving from other sensors. • Video solutions incorporate applications such as license plate recognition, people counting and vehicle tracking. • When integrated with video analytics this provides: o Better security for citizen. o Smoother flow of traffic. o Optimizes energy consumption o Reduces pollution.
