CEO CORNER The Changing Landscape of Workplace Safety The last few years have been instrumental for workplace safety, with organizations now viewing it as an investment rather than cost. While large organizations are at the forefront for driving this change, mid-size organizations are gradually catching up. Being complaint to international standards is one of the prime reasons for this change in approach towards safety. Another key reason is that fire and safety preparedness of a company is now being related to its brand image. Major companies that are focused on ensuring workplace safety have adopted it as a part of their company culture. Employee training and education is high on the agenda for these companies with many organizing fire and safety workshops for employees, including contractual workers. Some proactive ones are moving towards the idea of inherent safety, where they focus on minimizing any incident at the source itself. They are closely analyzing potential risks and taking preventive steps in advance. Our focus story in this issue is centered around the current state of workplace safety in Indian organizations. For the story we spoke to safety heads across different industry verticals. They give us an insight into fire and safety preparedness at their respective firms and the way ahead. We hope that you will enjoy reading our special coverage.

Apollo Fire Detectors - Protecting the India Habitat Centre The India Habitat Centre (IHC), a new national business centre located in India’s capital city of New Delhi, has chosen an Apollo fire detection system to safeguard the staff, visitors, buildings and property at its innovative site. The IHC is a multipurpose building combining work, commercial and social spaces. The idea for the Centre first emerged when India’s public agency, the Housing and Urban Development Corporation Ltd (HUDCO), wanted an office building for its workers and made the unprecedented decision to invite chosen non-profit organisations that shared their concern about habi-
tat to share that work space. An urban design project rather than a traditional office building, the IHC provides spaces for a number of uses across its vast nine-acre site. The Centre encompasses multiple courtyards, communal meeting rooms, a performing arts and cultural venue, a library, a restaurant, a museum and
hotels. This presented additional challenges for the design of the fire detection system. To provide effective fire detection in this significant space, installers Fire Hut Commercial Equipment Pvt Ltd specified a range of devices from the Apollo Fire Detectors XP95 and Discovery ranges. In total, over 6,000 devices are linked
to fire control panels which communicate via a central monitoring system in the control room of the complex. Commenting on the installation, Anil Vadera, owner and CEO of Fire Hut Commercial Equipment Pvt Ltd who executed this project, explains: “We have been associated with Apollo for the last 18 years. The India Habitat Centre is one of the most prestigious Government building centres to be protected with Apollo Fire Detection and Alarm Systems. This is truly a partnership of pioneers and we look forward to collaborating with Apollo on future projects.”

DigitalOcean releases free monitoring service for developers DigitalOcean, the cloud for developers, launched a Monitoring service that provides insight into the resource utilization and operational health of every Droplet (cloud server). Developers can collect and visualize metrics in graphs, monitor Droplet performance and receive alerts in one intuitive interface, with no configuration required. “Our goal is to simplify the complexities of infrastructure by offering a simple and robust platform for developers to easily launch and scale their applications,” said Julia Austin, CTO of DigitalOcean. ”A Monitoring service is an important feature for developers, and we’re thrilled to be able to offer it for free regardless of the number of Droplets. In the coming year, we’ll continue to move our Monitoring service forward and introduce new capabilities for high availability, data storage, security and networking to manage larger production workloads.” The Monitoring service measures each Droplet’s CPU, memory, disk utilization, disk reads and writes, network traffic and top
processes. Metrics are collected at one-minute intervals and the data is retained to enable users to view both up-to-the-minute and historical data. Developers can create alert policies and receive notifications by email or Slack when usage crosses a specified threshold.
Supporting Quotes • Super Humane Co-founder Josh West, a DigitalOcean customer, said: “DigitalOcean’s Monitoring service is easy to use, which was our biggest requirement. Having the ability to monitor my infrastructure and create alerts right in my dashboard saves me a lot of time so I can focus on building better applications that improve the lives of people–which ties directly into our company mission. We’ve built and run every app for our clients on DigitalOcean and we get stellar service for an amazing price.” • Enterprise Strategy Group Analyst Daniel
Conde said: “Many people start monitoring too late in the game, and it’s important to start the process in preproduction and continue it as workloads scale. Identifying potential trouble spots early on will help sift out performance problems before they become critical, and it’s a good move for DigitalOcean to include a monitoring service at no extra cost within its developer-oriented cloud.” • Ovum Principal Analyst Roy Illsley said: “As developers move to the cloud and DevOps becomes the normal way of working, the tools that enable the monitoring and management of cloud resources and application performance become a significant requirement. If cloud-based (whether cloud native or just migrated to cloud) applications are going to deliver the correct balance of performance, service quality and efficiency then the monitoring service must be integrated into the architecture.”

Corporate Fashion: More contemporary, greener & more feminine @ A+A The German rail operator Deutsche Bahn has decided to fit out its 42,000 employees with new workwear by Guido Maria Kretschmer, who has had plenty of experience in this area. He is a fashion designer and the presenter of “Shopping Queen”, a show on the German TV channel Vox. Corporate fashion workwear from Kretschmer is worn by staff at the tour operator TUI, the telecom company Deutsche Telekom, the airline Emirates and the hotel chains Kempinski and Maritim. Quite recently Deutsche Telekom completed a four-month wearing test, during which 40 staff members tested darkblue blazers, narrow trousers and smart box dresses. “It’s important to us,” said Deutsche Bahn, “to develop the workwear together with our workforce, as they’re the ones who need to feel happy in it.” This idea sums up the entire corporate fashion sector. Purchasing decisions are less and less taken by procurement divisions. Demographic developments and the spirit of our time have created an employers’ market.
It all starts with a wearing test Clothing plays an important part in this. “It’s an emotive product,” says Harald Goost who represents the A+A exhibitor Bierbaum-Proenen. So surveys and large-scale wearing tests are conducted to ensure that wearing comfort and colours meet not only workplace requirements, but also the preferences of the wearers. “Acceptance is very
18
INDUSTRIAL SAFETY REVIEW | APRIL 2017
important, and this is why it’s no longer just the procurement division that decides. Instead we want to come to a joint decision with health & safety, occupational medicine and the wearers,” says Joachim Geyer from Kübler, another company presenting its innovative products at A+A 2017. “It happens more and more frequently that we set up a plan together with procurement. And so we obtain relevant outcomes that are based on many years of experience,” says Goost. “Wearing tests usually also give new insights to employers.” To obtain findings that are directly relevant to a given company, it’s important to start by gaining a precise idea of its premises and routines. “We always look at the situation as a whole,” says Geyer. In the
case of public utilities in Munich this includes the sewage systems where staff need to lean against walls and work on their knees. “The products that sell best are the ones where we’ve succeeded in fully implementing the views of the test persons, based on wearing tests and surveys.”
Fabrics: wearers’ ideas vs. product life And in fact quite a lot is being done – particularly also in regions with full employment, such as Greater Munich, where employers are making a major effort to retain their workforce. After all, people are already used to a good level of functionality and comfort from sports. Goost speaks from experience when he says, “It’s often a balancing act
between the wearers’ ideas and the product life.” Four-way stretch fabrics and softshell jackets are not as resistant to wear and tear from frequent use and washing as traditional blended fabrics, which have proved their worth. Nevertheless, today’s customers are happy to accept the higher costs and possibly shorter product lives associated with new materials. Decision-makers are getting younger and also increasingly keen to ensure that their experience with sportswear is reflected in their companies’ workwear. Kübler, for instance, fits out Porsche in Stuttgart with high-quality workwear that is based on a layering principle. Employees wear the softshell jackets throughout a working day – and sometimes even at weekends, as they’re so practical, comfortable and smart.
Ergonomic cuts and combined functions A+A 2017 will show that features from outdoor clothing and sportswear are now very much part of corporate fashion and workwear. Ergonomically optimised cuts can be seen in offset side seams and darts. The fabrics are getting lighter and lighter. Mixed fabrics, in particular, are now typical of modern workwear. “Where functions are concerned, we divide each garment into zones” says Birgit Krauss from Uvex, which has been at A+A in Düsseldorf for many years now. This means having different levels of thermal management and involves the use of mesh materials in places which are especially vulnerable

to perspiration. It also applies to combinations of material functions, for example the use of flexible materials at the sides of a garment where it needs to stretch more. A product therefore combines a variety of different properties. “In logistics,” says Krauss, “we use twill for the front of the jacket, but softshell for the back and the arms. This makes the jacket both more durable and less expensive.” Joachim Geyer has another example: “In waste disposal the workforce are often subject to extreme perspiration during the summer, and so we add special ventilation materials to the crotch. On the inside a pleasant feeling is created through the use of cotton. Thanks to layering and the option of combining individual sections, it is possible to create a wide range that caters for different people’s varying perception of hot and cold.” New trends can also be observed in colours – another area where a balancing act is required. On the one hand, companies expect to keep seeing surprises in the form of new colours. These are currently somewhat more subdued and earthy, and colour blocking is getting more discreet. Genuinely colourful highlights mostly take the form of shirts, including polo shirts, with a large amount of creative leeway. On the other hand, if possible, workwear colours need to be both durable and remain acceptable for eight years. But even industries such as horticulture – where gardeners still wear green – are beginning to prefer more contemporary shades and combinations of colours. Even clothes that are more uniform in character are beginning to look more like leisure or sportswear.

INDUSTRIAL SAFETY REVIEW | APRIL 2017
Ladies’ choice In a job market where good staff are hard to find and not always easy to keep, one increasingly important element is the working atmosphere. This is an aspect where women are currently making a major contribution – by entering into new disciplines, such as automotive mechatronics and wood mechanics, and also by moving into previously male-dominated jobs such as bricklayers, decorators and varnishers, where they can now been seen more frequently than before. There are certainly more female staff on intercity express trains and at railway stations than in the trade sector, the car industry or the postal service; but even those industries are now attracting more women. “Female garments sold to those industries are still not very numerous,” says Goost, “and, from an economic perspective, it’s certainly not easy to equip women with suitable clothing. But if you want to get a contract, you can’t really get round it anymore.” To design women’s workwear, it’s usually not sufficient just to modify the cut. Quite often the pockets and collars require a different approach. “For instance,” says Geyer, “women don’t like thigh pockets. And if the collar is wrong, you won’t get anywhere at all.”
Sustainability is the new trend We can gradually see an increasing call for sustainability.
Thomas Lange, CEO of German Fashion, says: “By 2020, 50% of all textiles purchased by German government institutions will need to be sustainable. Fair trade aspects feature in all public procurement tenders. But these things are also seen as important by smaller companies which mostly know their suppliers extremely well. Some suppliers in the industry have already joined the Textile Alliance set up by Germany’s Development Secretary Gerd Müller.” Kübler has had the same experience: “Fair trade and fair wear are becoming firmly established now. Issues such as ethical conduct and sustainability are particularly important to big customers such as the Stuttgart City Council with its Green Mayor. Their procurement staff sometimes want to form their own views, and so they sometimes get our engineers to show them round our manufacturing facilities.” Sustainability principles and codes of conduct are often a vital part of their procurement policies.
More finishing, faster deliveries What else can you offer to the customer? The competition for customers is increasingly decided by the amount of added value. This opens up options for complementary areas such as finishing, consultancy, repairs and laundry services. Another key concept is customisation, which plays a role both for the product itself (names, special
sizes, etc.) and the shipping. There is now a tendency to move from standardised to customised logistics, with a demand for personalised packages, whether it’s complete or partial deliveries. Companies are turning more and more into system suppliers. Their product ranges no longer just cover trousers or jackets, but the full range of clothing, from hats to footwear. Consultancy, too, is an important element and starts with the initial contact. Suppliers support customers by evaluating their requirements, conducting wearing tests and surveys and then evaluating the outcomes. They have had experience in equipping entire companies and can provide a procurement division with valuable support.
Future with added value Added value also takes the form of QR codes and RFID chips. The wearer is, as it were, directly in touch with their clothing and can find out at any time how they can best look after a garment or when, for instance, a jacket was last impregnated. But this can be taken one step further – in the form of safety systems which check at the hall entrance or at the beginning of the shift whether staff are wearing their clothes correctly or not. And it means that the government can measure certain parameters, issue warnings via sensors, support wearers and improve their health. Today’s decision-makers want to see more than the latest fashion, state-of-the-art technology or a customised approach. They also value collaboration, trust and insights – right from the very first moment. The latest trends and relevant suppliers can be found at A+A 2017 in Düsseldorf from 17 to 20 October.

Successful Debut for INOS+H Expo in New Delhi Both trade visitors and exhibitors voiced satisfaction with the outcome of the trade fair – valuable synergies due to concurrent INTERNATIONAL VISION ZERO Conference. On 17 March 2017 the first edition of the Indian Occupational Safety + Health Exhibition – an event by Messe Düsseldorf and Messe Düsseldorf India – closed with positive results in New Delhi. The trade fair took place in parallel with the INTERNATIONAL VISION ZERO Conference organised by the Indian Directorate General, Factory Advice Service & Labour Institutes (DGFASLI) and the German Social Accident Insurance (Deutsche Gesetzliche Unfallversicherung (DGUV). The Conference was supported by the International Social Security Association with the Sections for Prevention in the Construction Industry, Mining and Electricity. For three days to the tune of 50 exhibitors from Austria, China, Germany, Great Britain, India, Sweden as well as Taiwan presented their product innovations from the areas of safety at work, personal protective equipment, health promotion and security at work. The trade fair and Conference attracted 1,400 trade visitors from all over India. Summing up Joachim Schäfer, Managing Director at Messe Düsseldorf, said: “We are very pleased that we can establish the success formula of A+A in Düsseldorf as the world’s leading trade fair with congress for safety and health at the workplace on the Indian market. Thanks to the valuable support by DGFASLI as well as by ISSA, the International Association for Social Security, and the concurrent staging with the first INOS+H EXPO aroused trade visitors’ interest from the outset. INDUSTRIAL SAFETY REVIEW | APRIL 2017
“The first Vision Zero Conference was organized by DG FASLI & DGUV in cooperation with ISSA in response to the increasing importance of safe workplaces in India. The INOS+H trade fair held in parallel perfectly complemented the Conference and presented the relevant products on a high quality level. We definitely want to continue and expand this cooperation,” stresses Professor Karl-Heinz Noetel, Vice-President of ISSA’s Construction Industry Section and Head of the PPE division. Trade visitors and exhibitors benefited from numerous opportunities for concluding business deals, expert exchange and praised the professionalism of the event. Commenting on this Klaus Bornack, CEO of Bornack GmbH & Co. KG, said: “Thank you very much to Messe Düsseldorf India and the team of A+A. This was our first show in India. The venue and organisation were very professional. Due to the highlevel conference, we met competent decision makers from all over India and from different industries like mining, construction and energy”. Ainge Wu, Sales Manager at Wenzhou Donghi Optical Co. Ltd. from China, also voiced his satisfaction with the new trade fair: “The company has just planned to enter the Indian market when we received the launch information of INOS+H, a member show of A+A, so we decided to participate in the show very quickly. We received a lot of enquiries about our products and met with a couple of highquality buyers during the show. Thanks to
Messe Düsseldorf launching INOS+H at the right time. For sure we will participate in the next show in 2019”. At the debut event the organiser welcomed such high-calibre exhibitors as Bornack GmbH & Co.KG, Globus Group, Loxy Sweden AB, Paulson International Ltd., 3M India Ltd., Accent Industries Ltd., Lakeland Gloves and Safety Apparels Private Limited and New Pig India Pvt. Ltd. Minister of Labour Bandaru Dattatreya and Secretary of State M. Sathiyavathy emphasised the increasing importance of safety and health at the workplace in India’s current economic environment. “With above-average economic growth and a rising income of US$ 5,410 GNP per capita there is increasing focus on the aspects of safe and healthy workplaces among relevant stakeholders. With its growth potential India is an interesting market for international suppliers of protective equipment. At the same time, many international companies run production sites in India and expect the customary safety standards and regulations for technical safety at work to be expanded further. This dynamic environment is the point of departure for the Occupational Safety + Health Exhibition INOS+H Expo which offers a unique industry platform for experts. INOS+H Expo especially addresses safety engineers, safety experts and officers as well as plant managers and entrepreneurs. It also targets works doctors, industrial physicians but also supervisory bodies, government and mutual indemnity organisations. In sync with the INTERNATIONAL VISION ZERO CONFERENCE on OSH, which disseminates expert knowledge in the Sections Construction, Mining and Electricity by way of lectures and seminars, the next INOS+H EXPO will be held in spring 2019 at the Vigyan Bhavan exhibition centre in New Delhi.

Honeywell launches new industrial cyber security solution to enable secure use of USB devices Honeywell (NYSE: HON) Process Solutions (HPS) announced a new solution for industrial sites as they balance productivity and cyber security demands. Honeywell’s new Secure Media Exchange (SMX) protects facilities against current and emerging USB-borne threats, without the need for complex procedures or restrictions that impact operations or industrial personnel. Malware spread through USB devices – used by employees and contractors to patch, update and exchange data with onsite control and computer systems – is a key risk for industrial control systems. It was the second leading threat to these systems in 2016, according to BSI publications, and uncontrolled USBs have taken power plants offline, downed turbine control workstations, and caused raw sewage floods, among other industrial accidents. “Industrial operators often have hundreds or thousands of employees and dozens of contractors on site every day,” said Eric Knapp, Cyber Security chief engineer, HPS. “Many, if not most, of those rely on USBremovable media to get their jobs done. Plants need solutions that let people work efficiently, but also don’t compromise cyber security and, with it, industrial safety.” Currently, many plants either ban USBs, which is difficult to enforce and significantly reduces productivity, or rely on traditional IT malware scanning solutions, which are difficult to maintain in an industrial control facility and provide limited protection. These solutions fail to protect process control networks against the latest threats, and offer no means to address targeted or zero-day attacks. “SMX is a great example of Honeywell’s major investments in new industrial cyber security technologies, products, services, and research which further strengthen our ability to secure and protect industrial assets, operations and people,” said Jeff

Zindel, vice president and general manager, Honeywell Industrial Cyber Security. “With the continued increase in cyber threats around the world, Honeywell’s industrial cyber security expertise and innovation are needed more than ever for smart industry, IIoT and critical infrastructure protection.” Honeywell’s SMX was developed by the company’s cyber security experts based on field experience across global industrial sites and feedback from Honeywell User Group customers. Honeywell has one of the largest industrial cyber security research capabilities in the process industry, including an advanced cyber security lab near Atlanta. Honeywell also partners with cyber security leaders, including Microsoft, Intel Security and Palo Alto Networks, among others, to develop new, highly-effective industrial threat detection techniques. Honeywell’s SMX provides hassle-free, multi-layered protection for managing USB security, letting users simply plug in and check devices for approved use in the facility. Contractors “check-in” their USB drive by plugging it into an SMX Intelligence Gateway. The ruggedized industrial device analyzes files using a variety of techniques included with Honeywell’s Advanced Threat Intelligence Exchange (ATIX), a secure, hybrid-cloud threat analysis service.
SMX Client Software installed on plant Windows devices provides another layer of protection, controlling which USB devices are allowed to connect, preventing unverified USB removable media drives from being mounted, and stopping unverified files from being accessed. SMX also logs USB device connectivity and file access, providing a valuable audit capability. “For most plants, the proliferation of removable media and USB devices is unavoidable, but the security risks they bring don’t have to be,” said Knapp. “We know our customers have limited resources to maintain another system, so Honeywell manages SMX for them. SMX never connects to our customers’ process control networks. From a system administration perspective, it’s like it’s not even there.” Managed and maintained directly by Honeywell, SMX provides the easy and secure solution to USB security in industrial plants. It helps prevent the spread of malware through removable media; stops unverified files being read by Windows hosts; and, through the private ATIX connection, provides continually updated threat information and advanced analytics to help detect advanced, targeted, and zeroday malware. Honeywell is the leading provider of industrial cyber security solutions that protect the availability, safety and reliability of industrial facilities and help securely deploy Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) technologies. Honeywell’s complete portfolio includes cyber security technology solutions such as Honeywell Cyber Security Risk Manager, the first solution to proactively monitor, measure and manage industrial cyber security risks; managed industrial cyber security services; and professional cyber security field services. The portfolio leverages the company’s industry-leading expertise and experience in process control.

Quantum releases Purpose-Built 4K video reference architectures Quantum Corp. (NYSE: QTM) announced purpose-built 4K video reference architectures that leverage the company’s StorNext®powered, disk- and flash-based workflow storage systems to maximize 4K stream counts and optimize performance levels in accordance with users’ specific needs. Based on exhaustive testing with real-world metrics, the new reference architectures reinforce Quantum’s long-standing position as the performance leader in media workflows and empower media facilities to make better-informed investments in 4K storage infrastructure.
The Need for Purpose-Built 4K Video Solutions 4K has become the primary driver of storage-purchasing decisions for many media companies, but identifying the best storage medium and system configuration is challenging. Given the wide variety of stream counts and media formats used across different facilities, it’s not necessarily obvious or intuitive what type of storage will deliver the best mix of performance, capacity and cost for a specific workflow or use case. To answer this question, Quantum conducted testing that not only provided a thorough performance characterization but also identified the optimal drive form factors for various media types.
The Role of Flash in Media Workflows Flash can provide a tremendous amount of performance, and Quantum’s testing showed that flash storage provides excellent value in media workflows where there is a high number of compressed streams — which can leverage the random I/O performance of flash — and where high capacity is not as important. On the other hand, because of the nature of uncompressed formats, flash does not significantly improve performance when there is a high number of uncompressed streams and may be capacity-limiting. StorNext performance optimization applies
36
INDUSTRIAL SAFETY REVIEW | APRIL 2017
equally well to flash and disk, thereby giving users the freedom to choose the infrastructure that best fits their performance, capacity and cost requirements.
Maximizing 4K Storage Performance and Value Quantum’s testing involved 14 different storage configurations using six media formats, all under rigorous, real-world conditions — e.g., arrays filled to 85 percent of capacity and using high-quality RGB data, not the 30-percent-less-demanding YUV data often used by others for evaluation. From this testing, Quantum determined stream counts and performance levels for its StorNextpowered disk drives and arrays, when and where flash is the most cost-effective solution for high performance, higher-resolution workflows, and when a spinning disk configuration can provide better performance for less money — ultimately resulting in the creation of four 4K reference architectures. Based on StorNext-powered Xcellis™ storage systems, these reference architectures are sized for specific stream counts and can scale up as needed to provide additional capacity and performance. • StorNext Base 4K — Ideal for small workgroups working in compressed
formats, supports up to 15 streams of compressed and two streams of fullaperture 10-bit uncompressed 4K. • StorNext High Capacity 4K — Designed for groups that need additional capacity for primary storage, supports up to 24 streams of compressed and up to six streams of fullaperture 10-bit uncompressed 4K. • StorNext Performance Disk 4K — The right starting point when higher stream counts and capacity are required, supports up to 28 streams of compressed and up to five streams of full-aperture 10-bit uncompressed 4K. • StorNext All Flash 4K — Providing maximum compressed stream counts and uncompressed support for highvalue content production, supports up to 66 streams of compressed and up to six streams of full-aperture 10bit uncompressed 4K. This all flash configuration will be on display in Quantum’s booth (#SL5810) at the 2017 NAB Show.

Let’s make time for conversations about mental health British Safety Council contributes to the ‘Stop. Make a Change’ campaign by supporting the mental health charity Mates in Mind . In partnership with the Health in Construction Leadership Group and its members in the construction and civil engineering industries, the British Safety Council, a founding partner of the mental health programme Mates in Mind, is supporting the safety campaign organised by the Civil Engineering Contractors Association (CECA), ‘Stop. Make a Change’. The half-day stand down, scheduled for the morning of 18 April, involving thousands of construction and civil engineering workers throughout the UK, will be an expression of the industry’s commitment to health and safety and, in particular, to four issues: fatigue, mental health, respiratory illness and plant safety. The stand down, which is at the heart of the new campaign, is spearheaded by CECA and supported by the HSE, as well as leading construction companies, such as Balfour Beatty and Skanska and clients, such as Thames Tideway and Heathrow Airport. They will use this opportunity to discuss their commitment in relation to each issue. Many of the companies involved in the ‘Stop. Make a Change’ campaign are among 260 organisations which have expressed interest in the Mates

in Mind programme. Mates in Mind was launched in January 2017 to raise awareness and understanding of poor mental health in the construction sector. The programme has been designed in response to the expectations and requirements of the industry’s 2.1 million-strong workforce and it is being developed in close partnership with leading British mental health charities. The purpose of Mates in Mind is also to bring the industry together to openly talk and address the stigma associated with mental health. The British Safety Council is currently conducting the first stage roll-out of the 45-minute awareness training, testing and refining its content to the needs of the participating companies and the construction industry. Michael Whitmore, Programme Lead for Mates in Mind, said: The ‘Stop. Make a Change’ campaign is an excellent opportunity to review the progress that has been made in relation to key concerns for the construction industry, such as fatigue, mental health, respiratory
illness and plant safety. These efforts have made Britain one of the safest places in the world to work, yet there is much more to be done. “During the national halfday stand down, employers will be able to discuss their commitment to positive mental health, which is so crucial in an industry where workers are ten times more likely to die as a result of suicide than from on-site accidents (source: Samaritans and the Centre for Mental Health). For some, this will be the first opportunity to start a conversation about mental health, share their concerns and request help if necessary. “Starting these conversations is what Mates in Mind awareness training is designed to do. This is the first, and often the most difficult, step towards breaking down the stigma around mental health and we are delighted that the industry is showing such enthusiastic support for the programme.”
with the British Safety Council to raise awareness and understanding of poor mental health in the construction sector. It aims to bring the industry together to openly talk and address the stigma associated with mental health by supporting employers and providing information on the best tools and techniques. It is an awareness and educational programme that is tailored to the needs of the industry. The training will be delivered by qualified trainers and can be integrated into organisations’ training programmes, tailored to the needs of their workforce.
About the British Safety Council For more than half a century we’ve been a trusted guide to excellent health, safety and environmental management. We have educated millions of workers and made hundreds of thousands of workplaces safer for everyone. We do this by sharing information, supporting, advising, educating and campaigning. We are a membership organisation and a charity. In 2017, the British Safety Council is celebrating its 60th anniversary. A programme of special events and projects planned for our diamond jubilee.

INDUSTRY FOCUS
The Changing Landscape of
WORKPLACE SAFETY From being on the back burner to taking center stage, safety has come a long way in the past few years. To get an insight into changing approach and focus towards safety, Shweta Nanda- Assistant Editor of ISR spoke to experts from leading Indian organizations. They take us through safety practices and initiatives at their firms and talk about the importance of employee training and their plans for FY18. Excerpts: industrial safety has undertaken a quantum shift in the last few years, with organizations adopting a risk-based approach towards safety. The focus is on analysing risks and taking predictive measures to manage them thereby preventing potential disruptions.

usiness leadership and continuity is at the centre-stage of every manufacturing organization with cost, quality, servicing and EHS as the cornerstones. 58
INDUSTRIAL SAFETY REVIEW | APRIL 2017
At Cipla, EHS is integral to our management systems. We maintain focus on inherent safety, i.e. machinery used in our plants have in-built safety features to prevent safety incidents. Besides other aspects, our plants are designed for safety and environment. We believe in the principle of first time right and thus a large part of project time goes in having the plant design right. Ensuring and safeguarding employees is a priority. For us, PPE is the last resort, as we aim at taking measures to eliminate, or at the very least minimize risks, at source. To share an example, our attempt is to maximize use of green chemistry in designing manufacturing processes. This helps in greatly reducing risks. We, at Cipla, lay a lot of emphasis on training employees
and contractors. We have EHS review committees at the plant and department level to execute and monitor EHS improvement plans.
Assessing IT-based applications In line with our commitment to safety, we constantly look out for and evaluate new and innovative technologies and products. For FY18, we shall be looking at IT-based applications for efficient analysis, tracking, management of systems and training. Going forward, we see EHS e-learning as a part of learning management, as we feel online learning is more effective and flexible than classroom training. Looking ahead, continuous manufacturing will be the next step in improving workplace safety in pharmaceutical manufacturing. Currently at a nascent stage, continuous manufacturing approach will become a reality with pharma industry in the coming years, thereby making workplace safer.
INDUSTRY FOCUS
Sanjeev Nair, Head Logistics Safety, Ambuja Cements
O
ver the years, India Inc. has been evolving its work practices and culture, however safety has not kept pace with the changing time. I would not say that it has not changed but the pace is slow. While multinational companies are accelerating their safety initiatives and are focusing their efforts on being compliant with international standards, smaller companies still look at safety as a ‘cost’ and not an investment.
Empowering Employees Through Training At Ambuja, safety is a part of our culture
and we constantly review our safety policies and practices. We lay a lot of stress on training and empowering people. We have a program called “We Care,” wherein each of the plants are divided into zones and each zone is led by the Zone Owner who has the line responsibility for his core function. Further, each zone has safety ambassadors and zone members. All Zone Owners are trained and formally empowered for assessing annual performance of the zone ambassadors and zone members. All these personnel are trained in safety aspects and put through behavioural safety training to ensure that safety is implemented at the grass-roots level. There is also a reward and recognition for those performing exceptionally well. This keeps the teams motivated and also helps maintaining a safe work environment.
Logistics and Warehouse Safety Talking specifically about logistics safety, which includes primary and secondary transportation and warehouse safety, the area has just started seeing some focus in terms of security. Traditionally, the transportation industry is not a wellregulated one and has been at the receiving end of several fire and safety related incidents. However, the scenario is changing
gradually as some proactive companies have gone beyond the four wall of their factories and made it mandatory for all those driving for them to have undergone training in defensive driving. Also, as a basic requirement trucks used for transportation need to have a fire extinguisher. The safety condition of warehouses is again a cultural issue. We have been working like this for years and nobody has ever bothered to look at improving it. Again, bigger companies are driving the change in warehouse safety. For example, at Ambuja, we have put up minimum safety standards for every warehouse, which include electrical safety, fire safety, use of personal protective equipment (PPEs), training workers regularly, to name a few. As an industry insider, I see a huge requirement for good quality and very basic firefighting equipment for the transportation and warehousing sector. Here the key word is training in the use of these equipment. The manufacturers need to educate people and make them realize the importance of such equipment, then only can the market for these products grow and safety become a part of the culture.
culture has been improving. That said, it’s challenging to raise safety awareness amongst workers in the construction business due to low literacy levels. Thus, visual training is the best suited for us.
Raising Awareness

However, since the past few years, safety
We are generating HSE awareness mostly through Toolbox Talk. Displaying safety slogans at the site is another step that we have taken in this regards. We take appropriate safety precautions for scaffolding work, erection of scaffold and working at height. We focus on the inspection of PPE and safety devices before use. Looking ahead, I strongly feel the need for more products specifically targeted for working at height as there are considerable safety hazards and risk factors.

it’s a must-have rather than a choice. The change in attitude is primarily driven by two key factors. Firstly, as global compliance and safety standards continue to evolve, Indian organizations need to keep pace. Secondly, it has become a mandate for companies to comply with fire and safety standards to maintain their reputation and gain an edge in this fiercely competitive marketplace. At Deepak Fertilizers, fire and safety has always been a top priority. Being a leading fertilisers and petrochemical company, we have a full-fledged EHS function that actively monitors, audits and inspects all fire and security systems. We are committed to the safety of our staff including contract employees and have robust fire policy and safety procedures in place. Every year, we conduct a 4-day mandatory training program to raise awareness about safety procedures. We also involve all employees including contract
project business. It has helped in enabling safe business, enhanced customer satisfaction, avoidance of non-conformance costs and execution delays, etc. Our journey towards a Zero Harm culture, has helped us in fostering the employee’s mind-set that incidents are preventable by not compromising on safety and making it a habit to care for each other’s safety. While good safety performance is recognized and rewarded, safety violations due to negligent behaviour also see consequent actions. Collaboration has accelerated by active contribution of employees in practicing good safety behaviour, identifying and reporting hazards and unsafe behaviour. We are further extending this to our channel partners in creating a safe environment, building robust systems and managing risks effectively through appropriate controls at all levels. This will ultimately go a long way in contributing to our company-wide programme of “Customer First.”
employees in EHS through various EHS campaigns and safety committee meetings.
Focusing on Continuous Improvement We believe that safety is a continuous process and keep investing in innovative systems. In FY18, we plan to deploy an EHS software, which complies with our needs and requirements. We shall also evaluate new, advanced products that confirm to international standards. To facilitate stronger fire and safety practices, we expect manufacturers to launch innovative, user-friendly solutions that require minimum training and maintenance like fire extinguishing ball. We are emphasising more on UL approved products in the field of fire and safety for active and passive fire protection.
FACE TO FACE
“We always strive to focus on customer satisfaction” Q. What are the various security related products that you offer? We offer wide variety of security products viz. Video Surveillance, Biometric Access Control, Analog, Digital, PRI, Hybrid and IP based Voice Logging solutions, CDR Analysis Tool and Two factor authentication solutions.
Q. What is the advantage of Matrix products vis-à-vis the competition?
Pagalavan Murugan, PMP Assistant General Manager – Projects & Solutions, Vox Spectrum Pvt Ltd.
Q. In your opinion, what is the state of security industry in India and what is the trend you see in the space? The security industry is growing rapidly in India. Given the growing directives of governmental agencies in ensuring the safety and security within institutions and companies, the opportunities have increased in multitudes for all stakeholders involved in the security business. This demand also invites addition of innovative product line to the bouquet of products that OEMs already have.
Q. Which market are you targeting? Our focus for the next couple of years is on the manufacturing and institutional sector. Though small and medium business has a very lucrative business share, we would like to focus on the larger picture, where there is not much of price war or competition.
Matrix is SUBSTANCE brand. Substance is in the DNA of Matrix solutions. Substance in the form of technology, depth, genuineness and going beyond the mere outer façade and offer more values in all the areas. This is what differentiates Matrix from the lot. Matrix solutions are packed with ‘More’. More productivity, more applications, more flexibility, more functions, more features, more cost saving, more reliability and more support. Matrix positioning is based on offering more of these true inherent values, which customers expect from infrastructure solutions.
Q. What is your marketing and channel strategy? Having been in the market for more than a decade, we own a huge base in terms of both end customers as well as channel partners. Our motto is ‘Relationship first, Business next’. We focus on nourishing and harnessing healthy business relationship with end customers, channel partners, OEM’s and within our team, which eventually leverages our business year after year.
Q. What is your support strategy? Retaining customers purely depends
on the kind of after sales support, the business offers. It is six times more expensive to acquire a new customer than to keep a current one. Hence, we always strive to focus on customer satisfaction. We understand that customers are lost primarily due to indifference rather than dissatisfaction and firmly believe customer service is not a department, but everyone’s job.
Q. What are the challenges that you are currently facing in India? India as a whole is a conservative market in terms of adapting new technologies in first hand and very price sensitive. Customers many a times benchmark the end to end solutions with equally specified low quality products, which is the biggest challenge partners like us encounter. It quite often becomes a nightmare when the decision makers at the buying end are not comparing apple to apple. With the ever increasing market share, competition increases as well.
Q. What kind of plans and expectations do you have for this segment this year? Our go to market strategy for this year has been planned in consideration with lessons we learned in the previous years - on the plans proposed and our understanding on the evolving security industry ecosystem. The Central Governments’ initiative on developing nationwide multiple smart cities will increase the security industry business’ share drastically. We are poised to grow with the ripple effect of new developmental activities being instigated throughout the country. APRIL 2017 | INDUSTRIAL SAFETY REVIEW

iscovery Gardens is a state-of-theart freehold residential community inspired by garden living set right in the hear6t of New Dubai. Spread across 26 million sq. ft., this community houses 291 buildings divides into six themed clusters, namely Zen, Mediterranean, Contemporary, Mogul, Meso-American, and Cactus. Discovery Gardens is home to more than 60,000 residents. A Nakheel Group Real Estate Developers build - developers of the 8th wonder of the world: The Palm Jumeira Islands and The World Islands, the Discovery Gardens communities are located amid lush greenery and carefully manicured themed gardens. The community comprises of more than 26,000 apartments in 1bedroom, 2 bedroom and studio styles, and 200 retail shops, making it one of the most expansive residential incorporations in Dubai.
Mission It was a greenfield project; the estate management’s prime lookout was display clarity and maximum coverage so as to ensure foolproof surveillance, especially in key locations such as the entry, exit, lobbies, and lifts. Also, the management wanted to be able to record footage in high definition for 45 days.
Challenge(s) Beginning from need analysis to solution designing to solution execution, the expanse of the location posed to be a challenge. Identifying the key locations that would offer clear footage and maximum coverage with the optimum use of cameras was by far, a daunting task.
Solution The vast premises required careful

screening so as to determine the best locations and angles where cameras could be installed to monitor the maximum area without compromising on the footage quality. The choice of cameras, cabling, and related equipment/ peripherals, also required careful evaluation. After analyzing the locations and system requirements, and subsequent discussions with the mall’s management, the CP PLUS Solutions Team designed and developed IP solutions suitable to meet the client’s requirement. IP solutions are an ideal choice when detailed clarity is required; it offers a compression of H.264. Installation is easier since the cabling requirements are significantly lesser as compared to analog solutions, which was best suited considering the expanse of the location. Further, the combination of cameras and NVRs chosen offered live monitoring in HD (@720P) and efficient remote monitoring (@ D1/6FPS), which ensured distinct, hiccup free footage. More than 1500 cameras were installed, in phases, covering one community at a time.
Also, third party VMS and analytics were also incorporated into the design to make surveillance effective and foolproof.
Impact The HD video surveillance solution delivered great results, meeting client expectations successfully. Active monitoring round-the-clock and in-built analytics enhanced overall safety and operational efficiency; the community’s management was able to monitor the vast expanse effectively. “The solutions chosen to monitor the vast expanse were, by far, the best that one could possibly offer. It was undoubtedly a challenging project considering the vastness of the premise, but our efforts paid off when the client expressed content at the end of it all”, mentioned the spokesperson of Al Reyami Technologies Co LLC, Dubai, the project’s system integrator.

VIVOTEK IP Cameras Secure Cosmos Bank’s Greatest Asset: The People of Pune
L
ocated in the West of India, Pune has long been a cultural and financial heart of Maharashtra. Though the Maratha empire was conquered by the British in 1819, many upper class Puneites seized the chance to adopt British culture during the colonial era, which brought many local elites into leadership roles and set the foundation for Pune to again become the cultural center of Maharashtra. Today, thanks to its proximity to Bombay, Pune has sustained its long tradition of economic prosperity. To add to this, Pune’s reputation as an educational center has attracted students from all over the world and earned Pune the title “the Oxford of India.” Of course, to keep this great city working, a financial heart is needed. Pune’s Cosmos Co-operative Bank is that

financial heart. Established in 1906, the Cosmos Cooperative Bank is the second oldest & second largest bank in India. The Bank has recently completed a glorious 109 years of service and attained multi state status in 1997. Cosmos Bank operates a huge network of 140 branches in India spread across 7 States and in 39 Major Cities. In Pune, Cosmos Bank is located on the University Road, which is at the heart of the city. Considering the scale of the city of Pune, and the location of the Cosmos Bank, any security system needed to be both up to date, and ahead of the field.
The Challenge: Protecting the Heart of Pune is no easy task. Cosmos Co-operative bank is
headquartered in a building with an inbuilt datacenter and high security safe in the center of Pune. Given that Pune is a dense and complex city with a population of five million people, there are many exterior factors that have to be considered when setting up a security system for the bank. Thus, a high level of risk and threat assessment was required before designing the risk mitigation strategy for the Cosmos bank. Three key risk areas were identified: threats to people; to property; and to the image of the Bank. In order to come up with a complete security system to minimize the risk impact, Cosmos bank engaged professional Bajaj Electricals for the design, engineering and solution implementation. The Bajaj Electricals first went through the study of the plans, in order to distinguish

the key threat areas. The flow of vehicles and pedestrians was studied and reviewed, thus a surveillance system that not only ensures the easy flow of pedestrians and vehicles but also guarantees the comfort of employees and customers could be proposed. A detailed project plan was developed which was tracked and updated on weekly basis to ensure compliances to the scope statement defined in the risk mitigation plan. A 3rd party audit team was also brought on to ensure that the requirements were met and gaps if any in the security were mitigated by appropriate measures. At the end of this extensive research, one security solution provider was found to be able to meet all the challenges facing Cosmos Bank – VIVOTEK.
The Solution: VIVOTEK – Inside and Out, Dark or Light. Bringing Total Security to Cosmos Bank A total of 132 VIVOTEK network cameras

were installed across the headquarters of the bank. For interior spaces, including the main floor area, the lifts and the lobby, 103 FD8136 Ultra-Mini Fixed-Dome Network Cameras were employed. The FD8136 features a megapixel sensor enabling viewing resolution of 1280x800 at 30 fps, while its tiny size of only 90 mm in diameter and an inbuilt microphone and speaker further enhances this tiny but might camera. The small profile but wide view of the camera means that Cosmos bank can now secure its employees, customers and property, without the need to install unsightly large cameras. For the basement parking area, 29 IP8335H Bullet-Network Cameras were deployed. This camera features an HD WDR CMOS sensor for use in challenging lighting conditions. The day and night functionality and the IP67-rated weatherproof housing of the IP8335H allowed Cosmos bank to build a cost-effective IP surveillance system without additional accessories.
Incorporating an IR-cut filter that can be removed automatically at night and built-in IR illuminators with coverage for up to 20 meters, the IP8335H secured Cosmos Bank’s parking area all day, every day. Finally, 4 SD8326 Speed-Dome network cameras secured the periphery of Cosmos Bank’s headquarters in central Pune. This camera’s Veri-focal lens, IR and 36x zoom, empowered Cosmos Bank’s security team to identify and recognize objects and number plates, even in the dark of night, while its rugged housing ensured that bad weather would never mean a lapse safety Cosmos Bank’s real treasure, the people of the city of Pune, “the Oxford of India.” A letter of appreciation from Cosmos Bank is attached. This letter highlights the vital part played by Bajaj Electricals Ltd in this project. Bajaj Electricals Ltd provided solutions covering security, safety and energy efficiency and made the headquarters of Cosmos Bank both smarter and more secure.

SAFETY TOOL BOX
W
hen designing a pneumatic safety system it is critical to know the specific details of the application. While many applications can be addressed with various solutions, there tends to be one best solution based on the risk assessment of the tasks and function and complexity of the machinery. In looking at a typical small bore cylinder application we would have four main considerations or questions to answer. • What is the desired outcome? o Should the cylinder stop or return to a safe state? o Should we exhaust of air in system or machine? • What is the flow rate required? • Is troubleshooting feedback from the valve required or helpful? • Is auto-reset acceptable? All of these questions help select the most applicable valve for the most appropriate and cost effective solution. Unfortunately many people tend to revert to a solution they have used before and can end up with an overdesigned system for the application. If returning to a cylinder to a safe state makes the most sense for the particular task and function then the Crossmirror, either the CM2 or 7776 series, would be the most appropriate solution. If stopping the cylinder or exhausting the machine air is required then either the CM2 Crossmirror, DM1E or DM2E series could be considered in conjunction with a pilot operated check valve. The flow rate requirement, as opposed to the port size being used may allow for a smaller valve to be selected. The Ross CM2 CrossMirror valve has a flow rate of .5 Cv. This is a 5/2 Cylinder return type of valve

INDUSTRIAL SAFETY REVIEW | APRIL 2017

CrossMirror® Series
but can be used for 3/2 normally open or normally closed applications by installing a plug in the unused port. The DM1E and DM2E 3/2 exhaust valves have a Cv of 1.9. For a low flow rate the Crossmirror valve may provide a smaller more cost effective solution for a 3/2 normally closed (exhaust) function than the DM1E or DM2E. If larger flow rates are required then the 7776 Crossmirror or DM2C series valves could be selected accordingly. All valves mentioned include an optional feedback switch for troubleshooting. This is ideal for a complex machine where providing this information to an operator or maintenance person can allow them to quickly identify and rectify the issue. For a non-complex machine the need for
feedback may be muted. If the valve is faulted and the machine is not operating there are very few things that could cause this. In this case de-energizing the valve and providing a reset signal could be simple and natural procedure in order to re-start production. Everyone has heard the phrase “When the only tool you have is a hammer, everything looks like a nail.” With various function and size options in dual valves Ross can provide the most appropriate tool for the application. This can result in less components required, the correct size of components, and the simplest integration into the control system. All of this can greatly reduce the costs to implement a safety system to address the risks.
