Firefighting leaps into the future with launch of Scott Sight in-mask thermal imaging technology intelligence system The innovative thermal imaging technology enables integration of a lightweight thermal-imaging camera within the mask’s display, providing firefighters with a clear, unobstructed view of their surroundings by keeping a thermal image in view at all times. The hands-free thermal imaging technology improves firefighters’ situational intelligence and eradicates the need to stop searching or put the hose down to deploy a hand-held camera, while also improving firefighter hot zone accountability. Although exceptionally lightweight at 240 grams, Scott Sight is very powerful producing a 160x120 resolution at 9 frames per second through an infinity lens which ensures a clear picture with no eyestrain. Longin Kloc, Global Product Manager, Growth Initiatives from Scott Safety,
said: “We are extremely proud to launch such an innovative product for the firefighting industry. Scott Sight really is a sophisticated imaging tool - it supplements existing hand-held technology by offering configurable hands-free visibility to the wearer in often inhospitable situations. “To create Scott Sight, we worked very closely with firefighters to develop a thermal imaging solution that is more accessible and easier to use. This means that the wearer’s attention can stay focused
on the fire, enhancing the ability to spot hazards and locate casualties, while also providing the means to identify a secondary egress in the event of a sudden change in circumstances.” An additional benefit of Scott Sight is that it can be configured to suit the individual wearer’s needs. The display can be set to the wearer’s line of sight and various user interfaces are available to suit different tastes. Hot spot and ambient temperature settings can also be selected. Scott Sight is currently compatible with the new AV-3000 EN firefighting mask from Scott Safety. As world leaders in the design, manufacture and sale of high performance products for the fire services, Scott Safety remains committed to improving firefighter safety by developing market-leading products.

British Safety Council announces International Safety Award 2017 sector winners and health and safety champions Lynda Armstrong OBE, Chair of Trustees, and Mike Robinson, Chief Executive of the British Safety Council, announced the names of the organisations which have been judged best in sector at the 2017 International Safety Awards Gala Dinner, held at London’s Grosvenor House Hotel on 5 May 2017. The names of the individual winners of the Health and Safety Champion and Young Health and Safety Champion were also revealed. Congratulating all the winners of the 2017 International Safety Awards, Lynda Armstrong said: “We are here tonight to celebrate the achievements of 535 winning organisations from across the globe, who have demonstrated to our panel of judges their commitment to keeping their employees healthy and safe. Our warmest congratulations to the award winning organisations and those shortlisted for the Sector and Champions Awards. “Throughout its 60-year history, the British Safety Council has played a significant role in changing attitudes about the importance of managing risks, both at work and outside. Whether through our campaigns on seat belts, lobbying for a comprehensive legal framework for health and safety or the training of thousands of managers and workers, I don’t think it’s an exaggeration to say we have helped save thousands of lives. “However, we would not

have seen these improvements if over the years the businesses hadn’t stepped up to make a difference. Our awards have always been our chance to say thank you for their hard work and to recognise their commitment to keeping people healthy and safe.” Now in their fifth year, the Health and Safety Champion and Young Health and Safety Champion Awards recognise exceptional individual performance of people who have played a significant role in keeping their work colleagues safe and healthy. For the Health and Safety Champion of the Year Award, organisations nominate employees aged 25 or over. The Young Health and Safety Champion of the Year Award is given to workers aged 16-24. The Health and Safety Champion award went to Kieren McCafferty, Walker Construction, Kent, while the highly commended award in this category was presented to Stephen Wilkinson, Addison Lee, London. The winner of the Young Health and Safety Champion award was Sophie Harwood, Waldeck Consulting, whilst the highly commended award was presented to Tom Arkley, Willmott Dixon Interiors Ltd Those International Safety Award winning organisations that were considered by the panel of judges as outstanding in their respective sectors were honoured with the Sector Awards. This year, the Sector Awards
went to the following companies: Construction and Property Services – L&T Construction TI IC/Kannur International Airport Limited Site Financial, IT, legal, scientific, technical services & media – Honeywell Technology Solutions Lab Pvt. Ltd. Hospitality and catering – Arsenal Football Club Local Government, Defence and Public Services – Dubai Municipality – Health and Safety Department Manufacturing – Kuwait National Petroleum Company – Shuaiba Refinery Oil, gas, mining & quarrying – Bahrain National Gas Company Power and utilities – Dounreay Site Restoration Ltd Transportation, distribution and storage – Unipart Rail Wholesale & retail services – Majid Al Futtaim. In his closing remarks, Mike Robinson described the key new initiatives which the British Safety Council has launched in its 60th anniversary year. “We’re widening our sphere of influence, taking on the risks associated with today’s changing world. The British Safety Council has always been an international organisation and for over thirty years we‘ve been working in the Indian market. This year we’re taking our commitment to the next level by opening an office in Mumbai. India has its own space programme but it’s also a country where very high numbers of
workers are killed or injured every year. We will be helping to address this disparity. “I am also very proud that the British Safety Council, together with the Health in Construction Leadership Group, have launched Mates in Mind, a new charity that aims to improve the mental health of the 2.1 million construction workers in the UK. Addressing the link between work, mental health and wellbeing is the challenge for risk management in the 21st century. That is why the British Safety Council is clear that the construction sector is only the starting-point for this initiative not the end-point. “The third area in which we have been embracing change is the digital world. The world in which we live today is very different to that of sixty years ago. We’ve been embracing these changes and I’m delighted to be able to showcase for the first time tonight our new website. We intend this to be the go-to digital home for everything you’ll ever need to know about health and safety. We’ll be using this new site as one of our main vehicles to educate, inform and drive public awareness. It has been developed in collaboration with our members and it will incorporate the digital tools and data which they told us they need. Therefore, we are confident that it will enable us to increase our profile as a leading health, safety and environmental organisation, both in the UK and globally.”

The partners agreed to develop the interschutz.de website into a forum for the latest news and product updates from the corresponding industries. The next edition of the world’s flagship fair for fire prevention, disaster relief and safety & security takes place from 15 to 20 June in Hannover. “This is a unique and dynamic constellation in terms of attendance and the content of the event – not just for the exhibiting industries and the German Engineering Federation VDMA, but also for our dynamic partners at DFV and vfdb. Western Digital Corporation participates at Secutech India 2017 Western Digital Corporation (WDC), a leading global storage solution provider, recently participated in the Secutech India 2017 event held in Mumbai from 6th April to 8th April 2017. Secutech India is one of the largest security shows organized in India and this year Western Digital Corporation participated as a Gold partner to witness 690+ brands and more than 28000 visitors which included attendees from different sectors and across the globe. This year the focus of the event was on areas such as Integrated Building Management Systems (IBMS), Smart Cities, Smart Homes, Internet of things, Secutech India Connect & safety pavilions. Western Digital Corporation has seen growth in the security sector in India and that has been one of the key reasons behind the organization’s decision to consider India as a standalone core region. The implementation of the Smart Cities project by the Government of India, the demand for
better quality video surveillance systems and the need to adapt with the emerging technologies acted as one of the main triggers for WDC to participate in this event this year. Western Digital is an industry-leading developer and manufacturer of storage solutions that enable people to create, manage, experience and preserve digital content. It is a long-time innovator in the storage industry. The marketing network of the company is spread throughout India
and several overseas countries with its headquarters in USA. At the Western Digital booth during the three day event the visitors had an opportunity to explore and experience various WDC products, including the recently launched WD Purple 10TB HDD which is the latest addition of the brand in their hard drive line of products for surveillance applications. During this exhibition Western Digital Corporation also shared the “Role of Surveillance in Securing Cities” report which was worked in collaboration with the Smart Cities Council of India. This report is a detailed analysis of the role of surveillance in securing cities, the need for Smart City projects to be implemented, opportunities that organizations, individuals and authorities would gain through these projects and challenges the Smart Cities project would have to go through in order to be implemented successfully.

A+A 2017: It’s the individual that counts Our working environment has changed in many different ways. The needs of the workforce have increased in complexity, requiring great flexibility and mobility. In particular, the focus is currently on the digitisation of the working environment and the impact of those processes on working conditions. A representative study was recently conducted by the German Confederation of Trade Unions (DGB). Called “DGB Index Gute Arbeit” (DGB Good Work Index), it showed
32
INDUSTRIAL SAFETY REVIEW | MAY 2017
that 82 per cent of employees felt that their work was impacted by digitisation processes, and 60 per cent even described this impact as high or very high. The respondents predominantly reported a greater strain, growing workloads and an increasing need for multitasking. A majority also said they were experiencing more monitoring and checking. But while nearly all workplaces are now digitised and customised, demographic change has also created new challenges and opportunities.
Measures to maintain a person’s working capacity are therefore just as important as industrial safety and corporate security. They improve people’s lives by protecting them from health and safety hazards. At the same time, they increase a company’s productivity and thus also its competitiveness. From 17 to 20 October everything in Düsseldorf will revolve around a safe, secure and healthy workplace. Trade visitors from all over the world will be meeting at the Düssel-
dorf Exhibition Centre for A+A, comprising both an international trade fair and a convention. A+A 2017 can already warrant at this stage that it will offer the full range of the latest global trends and products in industrial safety, health promotion in the workplace and safety management at work. Around 1,900 exhibitors will be at this leading trade fair, and registrations have been received from all continents. ment, HR managers, works councils, buyers in industry, specialist retailers, company doctors, firefighters, the German Federal Agency for Technical Relief (THW), the police, staff at employers’ liability insurance associations, accident insurance companies and owners of small businesses. It is held at two-year intervals. As well as being the world’s biggest leading trade fair in its segment, A+A has always – ever since it started in 1954 – helped to raise worldwide awareness of industrial safety and health promotion in the workplace. New developments have always featured in the range of topics at the trade fair and convention as soon as they arise. A lot has happened since the very first A+A, then called Trade Fair for Industrial Safety and Occupational Healthcare: 25 years ago the European Union introduced its first framework directive on industrial safety. Since then the EU has continually played a pioneering role with its high standards in protecting employees from health and safety hazards. Since 2008 the number of fatal occupational accidents has dropped by nearly one quarter. At the same time, there has been a 10-percent reduction in the number of employees in the EU with at least one work-related health problem or with a problem that has been aggravated by their work situation. Nevertheless, there are still major challenges. It has been estimated that around 160,000 people die of work-related diseases in Europe every year. It is one of the highest priorities to maintain and update high standards in Europe. The European Commission has recently committed itself to implementing further key measures. Their

and health-promoting working conditions do not just cost money, but also save considerable amounts of cash which might be spent on accidents and illness-related absences. Also, in the long term, it means securing economic benefits: • Staff feel happy at work if their environment is healthy, safe and pleasant. It increases their creativity, productivity and therefore also the quality of their output. • Checking workplaces for potential hazards and revealing and removing deficits means improving people’s working routines. This makes a company both safer and more efficient. A+A 2017 will feature the entire bandwidth of products and services in personal protection and in the realisation of safe and healthy working routines. Manufacturers will give convincing demonstrations of their innovative strength, including, among other things, corporate fashion, ergonomic office furniture, protective equipment, fire protection and emergency management
the German Federal Association for Occupational Safety and Health (Basi), whose thematic planning is moving ahead at full speed, after receiving numerous ideas and suggestions from the industry. All this input is now being evaluated, fleshed out and translated into a presentation programme. Again, the convention will feature over 50 series of talks, and more than 300 speakers will address current issues and outline potential solutions. As in previous years, the A+A Congress will include the conference of the International Labour Organisation (ILO) as a major programme item. It will consist of three sessions in which the following topics will be discussed by experts on employment, health and safety: • Occupational health and safety in the global supply chain • How can companies and employers collect and analyse occupational health and safety data in order to improve safety and personal protection at work? • Violence and psycho-social risks in the workplace
In addition to the trade fair and convention, other well established A+A programme items will be a range of forums, theme parks and special shows. They will illustrate specific solutions for specific areas and industries, providing visitors with hands-on experience of the relevant products. The Health & Safety Meeting Point in Hall 10 is a special show created by the German Federal Association for Occupational Safety and Health (Basi) and its national and international partners. A wide range of promotional support organisations in health and safety will be represented here, i.e. employers’ liability insurance associations, trade unions, employers’ organisations, ministries, government institutions, professional and trade associations, universities and other institutions. For visitors the Meeting Point is the competence centre on all issues of occupational health and safety. Experts are available here on anything that might interest visitors in matters of regulations, protective equipment, hazardous substances, occupational diseases, workplace health promotion, etc. Such wideranging consultation is unique and can only be found with this bandwidth at A+A. In addition, a wide spectrum of information material and media will be available, supplemented by informative and entertaining activities at the exhibitions stands. The Safety & Security Trend Forum in Hall 11 will feature simple, readily comprehensible talks on six focal areas, giving insights into recent developments. The following key areas are currently planned:

How are rescue operations conducted in extreme situations? This will be demonstrated in Hall 6 by our cooperation partners, the Federal Agency for Technical Relief (THW) and the German Life Saving Organisation (DLRG) at a special show entitled Safe Rescue Operations from Heights and Depths. Using a diving pool and a roofed-over climbing wall, the demonstrations will feature rescue operations of accident victims in extreme situations, both above and under water. The focus will be on methods and procedures in rescue operations as well as on the occupational safety of helpers and appropriate personal protection equipment (e.g. fall protection).
activities run by this year’s partner country, the UK, with the aim of encouraging GermanBritish dialogue on industrial safety. The various events will be attended by representatives of important industry associations, institutions and politics. The trade fair, the special shows, the presentations at the convention and the ILO Conference will all involve participation of the UK Health and Safety Executive (HSE), an independent expert committee which advises the UK government. The HSE acts in the public interest, aiming to minimise fatal accidents and serious work-related diseases in the UK workplace. The partner country was chosen by the Advisory Board at A+A 2015 and therefore clearly before the Brexit referendum. Since then circumstances have of course changed, making an international exchange of experience more important than ever before. The current political situation throws up numerous questions for everyone, including suppliers of safety devices and personal protection equipment. Being a major industry platform, A+A 2017 will give space to intensive discussions on institutional and business relations, with opportunities to learn more about the UK market with nearly 32 million in gainful employment. Traditionally, the number of exhibitors from the UK has always been the biggest at A+A: 85 UK exhibitors came in 2015, presenting their innovative products and services within a space of over 3,700 square metres.

Düsseldorf this October will experience an industry that is clearly growing. The worldwide PPE market currently has a volume of around EUR 18 billion. 38 per cent of this figure (i.e. EUR 5.8 billion) accounts for the markets of the European Union, including EUR 1.8 billion in Germany alone. Experts are expecting the market to grow even further. These positive prospects will be of great benefit to exhibitors at A+A 2017. Thanks to a high level of endorsement among international experts, the trade fair and convention have become established as leading global platforms for occupational health and safety. A+A 2015 attracted 65,000 trade visitors from over 80 countries, with an international share of around 30 per cent. Nearly two thirds of all visitors were senior or middle management with major decision-making powers in procurement. After the trade fair exhibitors said they were impressed by the high level of technical expertise among visitors and were mostly very happy with the outcome for their businesses. Visitors, in turn, praised the comprehensive international offers in all the different sections, the large number of innovative products and the supplementary information they received at the convention and through the support programme. After the trade fair more than half of all visitors said they had found suppliers and business partners, and 97 per cent said they would recommend a visit to A+A. These figures show that A+A 2017 should be worth the journey for anyone with a professional interest in occupational health and safety.

FACE TO FACE
Support plays a major role to our business Q. In your opinion, what is the state of security industry in India and what is the trend you see in the space? Today, the security industry is growing and we are moving from security in closed spaces to security and surveillance of public places. We foresee that both government and private sectors would spend on this industry. IP based surveillance cameras are the current trend and hence, we have shifted from Analog video surveillance to IP video surveillance. Another trend is that now there is more traction for an integrated solution as opposed to standalone security products. Areas like sensor based detection biometrics and in-line baggage scanners are expected to gain popularity. Furthermore, spending is likely to increase in these areas over the years. Mr. S. Susindran, Chennai Vsmart Technologies Private Limited
Q. Which market are you targeting? We focus mainly on corporate and government, where the percentage of competition is less compared to other areas.
Q. What are the various security related products that you offer?
48
INDUSTRIAL SAFETY REVIEW | MAY 2017
More productivity, more applications, more flexibility, more functions, more features, more cost saving, more reliability and more support. Matrix positioning is based on offering more of these true inherent values, which customers expect from infrastructure solutions.
Q. What is your marketing and channel strategy? Our marketing strategy towards end customers is pursuing a referral business. Most of our new businesses are through referrals from our existing customers. Other than this we have a marketing team who work on the field to generate new business and also through online marketing.
Q. What is your support strategy? Support plays a major role to our business. All our products, which we offer to customers, are rugged products that require minimal support from our team. This helps us reduce the support calls. To reduce the onsite support, we try to close the support calls online, which reduces time & money spent.
Q. What are the challenges that you are currently facing in India?
We offer complete range of security products like Biometric, IP based Surveillance, under vehicle scanners, DFMD, Automatic gating solutions, Turnstile products, etc.
Pricing of our products is one of the major challenges that we face. Our products being high-end have their prices on the higher scale. Hence, we work with only those customers who understand the technology and quality of the product.
Q. What is the advantage of Matrix products vis-à-vis the competition?
Q. What kind of plans and expectations do you have for this segment this year?
Matrix is a SUBSTANCE brand. Substance is in the DNA of Matrix solutions. Substance in the form of technology, depth, genuineness and going beyond the mere outer façade and offer more values in all the areas. This is what differentiates Matrix from the lot. Matrix solutions are packed with ‘More’.
We plan to focus specifically on government departments this financial year. We have a dedicated team to work with the government departments for preparing tender specifications. We are expecting to receive majority of our business from the government this year in the security segment.

ver since the government announced its ambitious vision of developing 100 smart cities for India, the project has garnered constant limelight. Given the country’s overpopulated cities and their strained infrastructure, the concept of smart cities that utilize technology in every aspect to massively improve the quality of life for citizens can truly prove path-breaking. One industry that is watching every development in the smart cities mission closely is video surveillance and security. This is because surveillance is central to the success of the initiative. “Smart cities models will operate on information gathering, storing and its distribution through ICT for communication. One such tool that can aid in achieving all of the above is surveillance systems,” explains Sanjeev Gulati, Country Manager-India & SAARC at VIVOTEK. While smart cities will enhance ease of living for citizens at various levels, ensuring robust security and safety for the citizens is at the heart of the initiative. The security arrangements of these cities will definitely differ from the existing security set up. Here again advanced video surveillance solutions will have a critical role to play. “Latest IP-enabled intelligent high definition cameras with seamless integration with universal surveillance software platform are definitely going to have a role to play in the future of urbanized living. Video surveillance shall help and increase criminal investigation efficiency and traffic management and response time with intelligent integrated video surveillance platform,” says Sharad Yadav, General Manager, Buildings, Honeywell Home and

“Smart cities models will operate on information gathering, storing and its distribution through ICT for communication. One such tool that can aid in achieving all of the above is surveillance systems” Sanjeev Gulati Country Manager-India & SAARC at VIVOTEK Building Technologies, India Elaborating on how integrated surveillance solutions have the capability to improve security and law and order situation in smart cities, Balasubramaniam Jayam, Head of Marketing - India & SAARC Countries, Dahua Technology says, “In a smart city, surveillance solutions at different areas within the city from railway stations, road to cab are interconnected. All the data from various surveillance systems is collected at a single control room which can be monitored to take timely action against any safety threats. Through popups, authorities are alerted of any suspicious activities or behaviour, say for example, unidentified baggage, rash driving,
etc. This real-time information empowers authorities to prevent crime or catch the culprit before they flee.” While safety is an obvious advantage of video surveillance systems, they can also play a vital role in providing more advanced public services in smart cities. “Today, surveillance is not just about security, but it also has great potential in providing more advanced public services,” asserts Mehernosh Pithawalla, Associate Vice President and Head - Marketing, Sales & Innovation, Godrej Security Solutions Division, Godrej & Boyce. For instance, in order to control traffic, a video surveillance system could automatically transmit information about a traffic hazard to another system, which can then instantaneously advise drivers in the area to take an alternate route. “Other connected transportation systems (rail, subway, air) within a city or region, even nationally, can also adjust and improve their efficiency accordingly, and benefit from an orderly system of instantaneously

“Today, surveillance is not just about security, but it also has great potential in providing more advanced public services” Mehernosh Pithawalla Associate VP and Head Marketing, Sales & Innovation, Godrej Security Solutions Division transmitted machine-to-machine transactions that help the public to move around smoothly,” Pithawalla adds. Echoing similar sentiments, Kanwaljeet Kukreja, Business Development, Energy & Smart Cities, Schneider Electric, India says, “With the growing population, public services need to become smarter: more efficient, innovative and available to all and this is the key agenda of Smart Cities. This also includes the safety aspect and makes security management of utmost importance to public. Video surveillance systems help improve community safety and a sustainable traffic management system. Up to 30% reduction
Considering that surveillance systems are to be installed at every junction in a smart city and given the enormity of the country, the demand for video surveillance-related technology will grow significantly in the coming years. According to a research and consulting firm 6Wresearch, the India video surveillance market is projected to grow at a compounded annual growth of over 13% between 2016 and 2022. The market size is expected to top $2.4 billion by 2020. Major video surveillance players are gearing up to tap this enormous business opportunity with their innovative offerings. Take the case of Honeywell, which continues to invest in advanced technologies such as Honeywell Universal Surveillance (HUS) which integrates closedcircuit televisions, access control, intrusion alarm and video analytics, unified command and control center and emergency response. “HUS is a distributed system designed for large scale multi-level management and cross functional networks with high definition video surveillance that has been developed through rigorous testing and validation to deliver exceptional benefits and is uniquely positioned to support India’s 100 smart cities mission,” informs Yadav. Honeywell is engaged with 14 cities in India to make them smart and secure including Bhubaneshwar and 11 cities in Madhya Pradesh. It is helping Odisha Police with a city-wide surveillance system that helps boost security, prevent crimes, maintain law
and order, and control traffic in the state’s capital city. 114 CCTV cameras have been installed at 28 strategic locations in the city, including high-traffic junctions. Cameras and digital video recorders have also been installed on police vehicles. Similarly, Dahua Technology, a prominent name in the global video surveillance segment, is also planning to cash in on the smart cities opportunity. Through its robust network of distribution partners, Dahua already has a vast reach and presence in the country. Now, considering the number of opportunities that will be generated in the wake of Smart Cities initiative, it is foraying in India directly. Sharing details about the key features of Dahua products Jayam updates, “Our solution for smart city integrates CCTV, face recognition, access control, intrusion alarm, video analytics, intelligent transportation

and control center under one roof. As an integrated platform tasked with unified command and centralized data storage, the solution allows rapid emergency response and cross-system or cross-department information sharing.” Godrej Security Solutions is also strategizing to make the most of immense opportunity. “We have always positioned ourselves as a comprehensive security provider and Smart Cities offer huge opportunity for us as security is one of the important pillars of a smart city. Infrastructure projects which involve the usage of CCTV cameras, alarm systems, access control systems would be some major opportunities that we would like to work on,” Shares Pithawalla. He further informs that Godrej Security Solutions is focusing on raising awareness regarding the relevance of security solutions in the daily lives of common people. “There are various products available in the security solutions space, and a lot has been spoken about them as well. However, adoption of security solutions for personal use is still an under-penetrated space. We

are doing a lot of things in this field and these products are exclusively made for the Indian market. Security is an important aspect that influences and improves the livability quotient of a city. However, it is important to educate consumers that security should be all-encompassing and should not be restricted to just installing quick-fix solutions,” Pithawalla adds. For Smart City, VIVOTEK has introduced the new vandal dome, MS8392-EV to upgrade its multiple-sensor product line. “Building on the achievements of the MS8391-EV outdoor camera, the new MS8392-EV provides an all-in- one solution, featuring four 3-megapixel CMOS sensors with 180-degree panoramic views, revitalized within a brand new aesthetic design. For wide open areas requiring detailed coverage, such as parking lots, shopping malls, schools, parks and plazas, it can maximize the field of view and reduces the total number of cameras required, thereby saving on both installation time and maintenance costs,” updates Gulati.
Smarter Security for Smart Cities With the video surveillance market slated to grow significantly in the coming years, the space is buzzing with new technological advances. “Devices surrounding us are getting smarter each day,” agrees Kukreja. “Innovative features such as Wide Dynamic Range (WDR), P-iris, and image stabilization, accompanied with high megapixel count, are just some of the inventions that have been made in video imaging,” he adds. Manufacturers today are offering cameras with built-in algorithms that are capable of detecting and concluding various scenarios independently and without a need for a back-end server to drive conclusions. “Existing offerings include cameras that are capable of reading a vehicle’s license plate, detecting crowds or simply identifying a vehicle within traffic. The cameras are serving as multipurpose sensors, providing visual as well as scene related data to a central hub,” Kukreja shares. Updating about the areas that are seeing maximum innovation, Yadav says,

Apollo Fire Detectors - protecting the
INDIA HABITAT CENTRE
T
he India Habitat Centre (IHC), a new national business centre located in India’s capital city of New Delhi, has chosen an Apollo fire detection system to safeguard the staff, visitors, buildings and property at its innovative site. The IHC is a multipurpose building combining work, commercial and social spaces. The idea for the Centre first emerged when India’s public agency, the Housing and Urban Development Corporation Ltd (HUDCO), wanted an office building for its workers and made the unprecedented decision to invite chosen non-profit organisations that shared their concern about habitat to share that work space. An urban design project rather than a traditional office building, the IHC provides spaces for a number of uses across its vast nine-acre site. The Centre encompasses multiple courtyards, communal meeting rooms, a performing arts and cultural venue, a library, a restaurant, a museum and hotels. This presented additional challenges for the design of the fire detection system. To provide effective fire detection in this significant space, installers Fire Hut Commercial Equipment Pvt Ltd specified a range of devices from the Apollo Fire Detectors XP95

Rajshree Sugar implements Matrix video surveillance solution to automate material management system
E
vidence Management System Using Video Surveillance to Improve Productivity and Prevent Losses
PROJECT HIGHLIGHTS: Integration: Matrix VMS with Weighbridge and SAP • Why Matrix: Customized Solution without Changing Existing Processes • IP Cameras: Capture Snapshot from Various Angles at Weighbridge and General Surveillance • Video Recorders: Connect Camera and Switch (Manual Call Button) for LPR Trigger
Company Profile: Rajshree Sugars and Chemicals Limited (RSCL) is a public limited company listed on National Stock Exchange (NSE) and Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE). The company has interests across integrated fields such as Sugar, Distillery, Power and Biotechnology. RSCL, with its Head Office in Coimbatore, has three, modern sugarcane based integrated biorefinery complexes located at Varadaraj Nagar in Theni district, Mundiampakkam in Villupuram district, Gingee in Thiruvannamalai district of Tamil Nadu and one unit at Zaheerabad in Medak district of Andhra Pradesh with easy access to Tuticorin, Chennai and Visakhapatnam ports.
Business Challenge: With the increase in demand of processed sugar and distillery products in India and International market, it was difficult for RSCL to manage inflow/outflow of raw material with speed and accuracy using manual processes. Moreover, RSCL was coming up with two

more units at different locations to increase their operational capability to match the growing demand. With its dependency on seasonal agricultural products such as sugarcane, whose short life span made it necessary to automate their material inflow/ outflow process for higher processing capacity and improved accuracy. Despite having most of the system in place, there were some obstacles such as manual verification of vehicle, manual entry of critical data directly in ERP, etc., which had scope for manipulation of data. This led to disputes in payment and difficulty in auditing process. Due to these complex requirements, RSCL was not only looking for just a video surveillance system, but for a solution that could support implementation of evidence management system to streamline and automate the entire material inflow/outflow process.
solution started with a joint site survey by Matrix, RSCL IT Head and System Integrator. After addressing some common concerns such as standardized number plates, integration of Matrix VMS with SAP database and customized reports, timeline for implementation was decided. There are three important stations in the entire process, starting from the entry station, to the weighbridge, and finally the exit area. Entry Reception Area: 2MP Cameras are installed to capture every vehicle entering the premises. It is connected to the VMS Server via SATATYA HVR0408P at reception area. Weighbridge Area: Three 1.3MP Cameras are connected to cover the weighbridge area when vehicle comes on the platform. It captures face of the driver, material loaded and number plate of vehicle. All these Cameras are directly connected to the main VMS Server. Exit Area: Same process is repeated at the exit point to fetch the data of the empty vehicle. 1.3MP Cameras take snapshot of the vehicle from same direction. It is connected via SATATYA HVR1624P to the main VMS Server.

SAFETY IN WELDING By S.K. Palit, Head-CCC & Strategic Support - Equipment, SGP & WAPS, Ador Welding Ltd.
S
afety is a critical consideration for any welding project. Arc welding is a safe occupation when proper precautions are taken. But, if safety measures are ignored, welders face an array of hazards which can be potentially dangerous, including electric shock, fumes and gases, fire and explosions and more. Welders are members of an occupational group which is exposed to a number of different environmental problems • Electricity • Electromagnetic fields • UV, IR and visible light radiation • Air pollution • Fire and Spatter • Noise • Ergonomics To help keep welders safe, organizations such as the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists (ACGIH) and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) offer safety guidelines to help control, minimize or to help employers and workers avoid welding hazards. Employers should ensure all workers have an opportunity to comply with the following important guidelines in the workplace: • Read and understand manufacturer instructions for equipment • Carefully review material safety data sheets • Follow the company’s internal safety practices • Awareness of the most common welding hazards and knowing how to avoid them ensures a safe, productive work environment for all.
Electric shock Electric shock is one of the most serious and immediate risks facing a welder. Electric shock can lead to severe injury or
66

It’s important to remember to never touch the electrode or metal parts of the electrode holder with skin or welding clothing and insulate yourself from the work and ground.
death, either from the shock itself or from a fall caused by the reaction to a shock. Electric shock occurs when welders touch two metal objects that have a voltage between them, thereby inserting themselves into the electrical circuit. For instance, if a worker holds a bare wire in one hand and a second bare wire with another, electric current will pass through that wire and through the welding operator, causing an electric shock. The higher the voltage, the higher the current and, thus the higher the risk for the electric shock to result in injury or death. The most common type of electric shock is secondary voltage shock from an arc welding circuit, which ranges from 20 to 100 volts. Bear in mind that even a shock of 50 volts or less can be enough to injure or kill an operator, depending on the conditions. Due to its constant change in polarity, alternating current (AC) voltage is more likely to stop the heart than direct current (DC) welders. It is also more likely to make the person holding the wire unable to let go. To avoid secondary voltage shock, welding operators should wear dry gloves in good condition, never touch the electrode or metal parts of the electrode holder with skin or wet clothing and be sure to insulate
themselves from the work and ground, keeping dry insulation between their body and the metal being welded or ground (such as a metal floor or wet surface). ADOR Welding Limited (AWL) offers a wide range of PPE (Personal Protective Equipment), like Welding Gloves, Safety Shoes and other safety products to ensure the welders’ safety. In addition, AWL offers VRD (Voltage Reducing Device) as a built-in feature as an option, and also VRD Units which can be fitted externally to any AC or DC SMAW Welding machine, which keeps the secondary voltage down to a safe level of 18-20 V when no welding is being done (machine switched on, but in idle condition). Full welding power is automatically enabled whenever the welder strikes the welding arc. An even more serious shock, primary voltage shock, may occur when a welder touches electrically “hot” or “live” parts inside the welder case or the electric distribution system to which the welder is connected. This action can lead to a shock of 230 or 415 volts. AWL offers ELCB as an option in their welding machines to completely eliminate this hazard.
Fumes and gases Overexposure to welding fumes and gases can be hazardous to the health of the welder as well as any other person who is working in the vicinity of the welding area. Welding fume contains potentially harmful complex metal oxide compounds from consumables, base metal and the basemetal coatings, so it is important to keep the head out of the fumes and use enough ventilation and/or exhaust to control the exposure to substances in the fume, depending on the type of rod and base metal being used. The specific potential health effects

which relate to the welding consumable product being used can be found in the Health Hazard Data section of the Safety Data Sheet available from the consumable manufacturer. Welding areas require adequate ventilation and local exhaust to keep fumes and gases from the breathing zone and the general area. In most situations, a ventilation system- such as a fan, and an exhaust system or fixed or removable exhaust hoods- to remove fumes and gases from the work area are provided. AWL has introduced in their range different models of Welding Fume extraction systems, both stand-alone as well as centralized systems (KING EXTRACTORS), with advanced technology, special filters and with or without built-in compressors
and may pose a significant fire and explosions hazard if safe practices are not followed. While the welding arc may reach temperatures of 10,000 degrees Fahrenheit, the real danger is not from the arc itself, but rather the intense near the arc and the heat, sparks and spatter created by the arc. This spatter can reach up to 35 feet away from the welding space. To prevent fires, before beginning to weld, inspect the work area for any flammable materials and remove them from the area. Flammable materials are comprised of three categories: liquid, such as gasoline, oil and paint; solid, such as wood, cardboard and paper; gas, including acetylene, propane and hydrogen.
Fire and explosions Welding arc creates extreme temperatures,
Special attachments and extensions to interconnection cables reduce welder fatigue for welding at long distances from the Power Source

Ergonomics When welding heavy material manually and during assembly welding the loads are very static. Positioning welding also gives high loads. Ergonomic control of Welder’s position, arrangement of rotating tables (rotators and turn tables) is important to reduce welder fatigue and chances of poor weld quality.
Other safety considerations Welders should also be aware of other safety considerations within the work environment. For example, those working in a confined space or in an elevated area make need to take extra precautions. In any welding situation, welding operators should pay close attention safety information on the products being used and the material safety data sheets provided by the manufacturer and work with their employer and co-workers to follow appropriate safe practices for their workplace. Good common sense is also key. If opening cans of electrode, keep hands away from sharp edges. Remove clutter and debris from the welding area to prevent tripping or falling. And never use broken or damaged equipment or PPE. To keep up with the most recent safety practices, welding operators should utilize resources from the American Welding Society (AWS), OSHA and welding manufacturers. By following these safe practices and using common sense, operators can stay safe and keep production moving with no lost-time accidents. Safety & Health Fact Sheets are provided in the ANSI Z49.1 Standards.

t is sometimes a small world - and the same applies to international machine construction. The services division of the Indian subsidiary of Schmersal found via a local machine manufacturer in Pune in the Indian state of Maharashtra that Thai company Trident Pack and Engineering Co. Ltd in Bangkok were in the market for a risk assessment in line with European standard EN ISO 12100. Trident Pack is a medium-sized manufacturer of packaging machines and systems for food, beverages, pharmaceuticals and medical products. Among the leading customers of the Bangkok machine manufacturer is food
multinational Mondelez International, which once went by the name of Kraft Foods and is the third largest food manufacturer in the world after Nestlé and PepsiCo. The food multinational makes famous international brands such as Milka chocolate, Toblerone, Philadelphia cheese, Cadbury’s, Halls, Clorets, BournVita, Tang… etc… In Thailand, Mondelez employs around 1400 people and has two production sites, including “Lad Krabang”, the largest sweet and chewing gum production factory in South East Asia. For this factory in a suburb of Bangkok, Trident Pack has developed and produced a new high speed products

transfer system for reorienting, collating and transferring “Halls Hard-boiled Candy” secondary packs from four contributing primary pack lines to a common tray packer and a flow wrapper. Mondelez is the market leader in Thailand in the chewing gum and Medicated hard boiled Candies sector. However, Mondelez demanded that, prior to delivery, Trident Pack subjected the packaging system to a risk assessment in accordance with the standard EN ISO 12100 and validated the safety functions in accordance with EN ISO 13849. “Mondelez takes occupational safety very seriously,” explains Prasad Kulkarni, Associate Vice President Business Development at Schmersal India Pvt. Ltd, which supported and oversaw the tec. nicum project at Trident Pack. Therefore,
one of Mondelez’s stated aims is to continuously improve health and safety for its employees in all areas. One of Mondelez’ two Thai factories received the Silver Award in the annual “Zero Loss Time Accident” competition held by the Thai Employment Ministry. “We have also realised that many of our customers who are part of global multinationals are introducing their own machine safety standards which then need to apply across all sites worldwide,” explains Prasad Kulkarni. This explains why Mondelez is geared towards European standards in machine safety, even for machines which are not to be used in Europe. “Once again, tec.nicum has the advantage that we can offer a consistent global standard of quality when it comes to machine safety
consultancy and service and we also have the know-how in terms of standards, whether they are European directives or other national or regional standards,” stresses Prasad Kulkarni. tec.nicum’s range of services include training, consultancy services, design and technical planning, plus installation and integration of safety components into existing systems. Depending on their requirements, the customers can utilise the modular services - from the audit of a single machine to the development of complete safety technology system solutions. Once Trident Pack had forwarded the technical specifications of the “Tray Line” packaging line to tec.nicum India, the certified Functional Safety Engineer at tec. nicum India, Siddesh Dalal, carried out a

relatively short-notice safety audit on site in Bangkok in mid-September 2016. The standardised norm on machine safety EN ISO 12100 was applied, which contains general principles on risk assessment and risk reduction. As a rule, risk assessments on machines and systems are broken down into five stages: 1. Definition of the machine boundaries 2. Identification of hazards or hazard situations which could arise as a result of the machine 3. Estimation of the risk 4. Assessment of the risk to determine whether risk reduction is required 5. Removing the hazards or risk reduction If it is not possible to “design the machine to be inherently safe” to remove hazards or reduce the risks associated with the hazards, technical safety measures must be used. In the case of the Tray Line in Thailand, safety doors and flaps are used, plus safety switches with separate actuators, EMERGENCY STOP buttons and safety relay modules which, if the doors are opened, ensure that the hazardous movement is stopped by means of a controller. As the safety machine, here is dependent on a controller, Mondelez insisted that “the design of safety-related parts of controllers” must achieve a Performance Level PL in Category 3 in accordance with EN ISO 13849. This means that the safety technology needs to have fault-tolerance built in, so that a single malfunction cannot lead to a failure and must be detected to ensure switching back on is not possible. Based on ISO 13849-2:2012 tec.nicum creates all necessary documentation (validation plan, fault lists, calculations, etc.) and carries out the validation of safety functions. In this case tec.nicum checks the circuit diagrams of the electrical, pneumatic, and hydraulic systems, as well as calculates the performance level (PL) and the PFHD values for every safety function. The validation results are

documented in an understandable manner. In the technical report presented by Siddesh Dalal at the end of the three-day audit, it was confirmed that the safety functions met all the requirements. Therefore, no additional safety measures were recommended to reduce the risk. It made no difference that the safety components used were not Schmersal products. With this risk assessment, tec. nicum India was once again pursuing its policy of product and manufacturer neutrality which is part of tec.nicum’s core philosophy. When the safety engineers take on the tec.nicum risk assessment, it is purely a neutral assessment of the safety-related aspects of the machines and the safety functions used - there is no emphasize on recommendations to use Schmersal safety products. “Our safety engineer Siddesh Dalal was able to deliver substantial added value to the customer by explaining some of the “softer” aspects in the implementation of the safety equipment,” reports Samir Kanchan, Head of tec.nicum India. “For example, he recommended planning an adequate distance between the control panels and the wall of the building so that the machine operator can easily reach the control panel and the internal components. He also explained in detail the requirements that a Category 3 safety circuit needed to fulfil.” Both Trident Pack and Mondelez were very pleased with tec.nicum’s objective, neutral approach to consultancy – independently of products and manufacturers – and the quick, professional way the risk assessment was carried out. As a result, tec.nicum India received an order for two more packaging lines (complete lines consisting of primary, secondary & tertiary packing for compressed mint products) from Trident Pack in December 2016 to carry out a risk assessment & verification. Ganesh Ram Jayaraman, Trident Pack’s Director says that the need of the hour for OEMs like Trident Pack is holistic support on machine safety, i.e. assessment, guidance, verification and certification
by certified and experienced safety professionals. Trident Pack liked tec.nicum’s risk assessment approach of understanding the needs and constraints on operability, process, costs, space constraints etc. and suggesting solutions in a participative way. Need of the hour, in a nutshell!!

SMARTER SOLUTIONS for a smarter tomorrow
Why Indian smart cities require video wall solutions for energy monitoring and traffic control By Rajiv Bhalla, Managing Director, Barco Electronic Systems
W
ith recent high-profile developments such as the launch of the Smart Cities Mission, there is talk of retrofitting the urban infrastructure in more than 100 cities across the country. Technology is predicted to bring service delivery, access to amenities, operational efficiency, and quality of life in Indian cities on par with their global counterparts. But with The Global Commission on the Economy and Climate projecting the number of Indians living in urban areas to cross 600
76

million by 2031, the challenges associated with translating this vision into a tangible reality become quite apparent. Energy and mobility, in particular, have emerged as two of the most vital concerns that potential smart cities in the country need to address on a rather urgent basis.
Where the problem lies: Why urban mobility and energy demand immediate attention Home to approximately 17% of the global
population, India is also the 4th largest consumer of energy in the world. However, it is heavily dependent on imports to meet its requirement for conventional energy resources such as crude oil, natural gas, and coal. This might prove to be a major hurdle in the vision of building over one hundred interconnected cities, which will need uninterrupted energy supply to power their smart technology-driven infrastructure, especially since the energy demand is expected to cross 1500 mtoe
TECH UPDATE
(million tonnes of oil equivalent) by 2030. Urban mobility, on the other hand, poses a different challenge. Vehicle congestion, heavy air/noise pollution, poor road conditions, and improper traffic management – those living in urban geographies are well aware of the hassles they will have to face on their daily commute. These issues not only have a significant negative impact on quality of life, but also decrease workforce productivity and have a detrimental effect on the Indian economy; reports suggest that inadequate urban mobility infrastructure currently incurs annual expenses to the tune of $80 billion to the nation’s GDP in the form of environment degradation costs.
Video walls: increasing operational efficiencies, facilitating better resource utilisation While steps are being taken to increase capacity, another viable way of meeting the growing demand on energy and urban mobility infrastructures in Indian cities is unlocking better efficiencies in the extant utilisation capabilities. Market data underlines the kind of difference efficient utilisation of existing infrastructure can make. It is estimated that inefficient traffic management leads to parking woes in urban areas, contributing anywhere between 30 to 40% of the overall traffic congestion. Similarly, India wasted more than 3 billion units of electricity in 201415. This amount is equal to an entire day’s national energy consumption. This is the kind of wastage of resources that Indian smart cities will need to address and minimise. This is where state-of-theart video walls come into the picture. By facilitating visual communication over an Internet Protocol (IP) based network,
78
INDUSTRIAL SAFETY REVIEW | MAY 2017
these advanced visualisation solutions can help smart cities in achieving synergies between various systems and facilitate much better utilisation of resources than otherwise possible. For example, operators in a centralised traffic control room can access all kinds of data from various surveillance/ enforcement cameras as well as intelligent transportation systems on the video wall. This data can then be analysed to generate actionable insights in real-time, which can then be implemented by on-ground teams to facilitate junction improvement and smoother traffic flow. A similar solution can be implemented to enhance energy generation, management, and distribution in smart cities. Video walls can be used by operators in control rooms to simultaneously display data from various elements of the city’s energy infrastructure as a real-time operating dashboard. Through localised energy monitors and live camera feeds, insights can be drawn into energy consumption trends and demand forecasting, while by-the-minute updates about current capacity, energy utilisation, and system downtimes are also made easily accessible. Availability of such data-driven insights makes it possible for smart cities to accurately identify their average sector-wise energy demand as well as any real-time developments, which in turn enable better energy utilisation and minimise wastage. If projections made by the Ministry of Urban Development hold true, then nearly 75 percent of the country’s GDP can be expected to be generated from Indian cities by 2031. Equipped with state-of-the-art tech infrastructure, smart cities will be at the forefront of this socioeconomic revolution. No wonder, then, that all eyes – digital and human – are firmly on them.

Security Upgrade in India’s
HOSPITALITY SECTOR Q. What are the new opportunities in India’s growing Hospitality Security solutions market? As of March 2017 India has moved up 13 positions to 52nd rank from 65th in Tourism & Travel competitive index. It is one of the major contributors to the GDP from the services sector. India is expected to move up five spots to be ranked among the top five business travel market globally by 2030, as business travel spending in the country is expected to treble until 2030 from US$ 30 billion in 2015. International hotel chains will likely increase their expansion and investment plans in India, and are expected to account for 50 per cent share in the Indian hospitality industry by 2022, from the current 44 per cent. Considering these statistics, the future for hospitality security solutions is very positive and strong.
Q. What are the emerging threats for India’s hospitality sector? In India the threat of theft is not very high. But there is a larger threat from terrorist activities and as we have seen in the past, hotels prove to be soft targets. It is therefore essential that hotels have a fool-proof security in place to deal with internal as well as external threats. As per law all hotels are mandated to check all incoming people as well as their baggage, which is a good thing. Electronic security, access control, video surveillance –all these measures are a response to the threats that

the hospitality sector is facing today
Q. What are the key challenges for installing Security Systems? In the hospitality industry, the main challenge that people face is how they can get various systems to actually talk to each other and work in a coordinated manner. Most of the times, systems are not compatible leading to duplication of work and loss of data.
Q. How strategies, guidelines and Policy framework can help us to enhance security in the hospitality sector? Today security is being given a huge amount of importance only in 5-star hotels and not so much in the smaller hotels and resorts. It is high time that some basic security framework is made mandatory in all hotels. This is an action that can only come from the government with new policies in place. The reason to do this is to also make travelers feel safe.
Q. How hospitality industry can sensitize their clients and customers for any emergency? That’s a tricky one to look into. Placing manuals or instructions in rooms and other common areas can be done but we cannot guarantee how much people will pay attention to them. Maybe if they can find a way to programme a safety video into the hotel TV such that the guest has to view
the video before he/she can actually surf the channels can be one solution but it will also lead to their dissatisfaction. However, over time they would be ok with it if it becomes mandated by law.
Q. What are the suggestions for implementing hotel security projects? Hotel security projects should be planned not just to meet compliance criteria but also to ensure that the hotel and the guests actually receive some benefit from the same. Integrated systems, easy reporting, timely alerts and actionable messages are all equally important. It can also help hotels become more efficient by providing automatic data.

Q. What are the latest innovations happening in these segments?
Q. What are the latest product and solution offerings?
Q. What are the challenges and opportunities for ACCESS CONTROL solutions?
High-definition, three-dimensional CT scans of luggage may soon replace static X-ray images at airports as part of a wave of new technology designed to speed up security lanes while improving detection of weapons and explosives. Today bombs are getting thinner and smaller and therefore more lethal, which is why easy detection and quick action is critical.
Newer products are available with self diagnostic abilities with better, clear imaging. Integration with access control systems and alarm systems is also enhancing the value delivered by the systems.
Access control systems need to keep pace with changing needs. They need to evolve and get smarter as crime gets more and more sophisticated. This is true for every industry. For example, one step authentication is still very common, which needs to move up to two or three step authentication. Integration with mobile is a huge opportunity as everything has moved into the hands of the user.

Smart Cards. It has also been established that, companies can save a further 5% reduction in costs using its in-built Card Design Management. iSolus Visitor Management System: Managing scheduled and unscheduled visitors in vast numbers can quickly transform into a full-scale job that adds very little value. Manual systems do not help create records or ensure safety against imposters. iSolus’s Visitor Management System automates this process, reducing manpower and time required. Apart, with photo identification and online records tracking past visitors is easy. Visitors who have not left the premises post certain hours can also be identified and their hosts alerted.
just allows you to automatically identify and provide entry to regular vehicles, but also helps allot the right parking space to company officials. Visitor parking can be arranged in an orderly manner and vehicles that have overstayed on campus can be identified and flagged. iSolus- Video Management Integration With iSolus Video Management Integration, companies can follow the Management by Exception system where security managers only need to look into alerts and not monitors videos on a continuous basis. It plugs into your Access Control system helping necessary action on a real time basis.
