Honeywell Releases New FAAST Aspiration Smoke Detection Applications guide
C
hoosing the right fire detection method for a specific environment can have wide-reaching benefits not only in terms of the level of protection provided but also economic advantages such as reduced downtime and improved maintenance. Aspiration Smoke Detection (ASD) – where air is drawn through sampling holes in a pipe network for smoke particulate analysis – has become one of the premier detection methods in challenging applications, due to its adaptability for diverse applications. A new in-depth FAAST Aspiration Smoke Detection Applications Guide has been released by Honeywell this
month, in order to aid system integrators, consultants, specifiers and installers during the specification, design, installation and commissioning process. The guide details aspiration device benefits and application considerations, along with best practices for installation, commissioning and maintenance. It draws on industry codes of practice and guidance from key associations and focuses on the FAAST Fire Alarm Aspiration Sensing Technology range. Key applications covered include: Telecoms, Large Open Spaces, Extreme Temperature Locations, Dirty Environments, Transportation Facilities, Historic and Cultural Sites, Ducts & Lift
Shafts and many more. Gintare Budriunaite, Marketing Manager, Speciality Products, Honeywell Fire Safety, said: “We developed the guide to provide a detailed, informative resource for anyone interested in learning more about the implementation of Aspiration Smoke Detection in specific environments. It provides particular value to those working in areas where earliest detection is required, interior design aesthetics cannot be compromised, standard detection methods fail, and areas with restricted or limited access. We are seeing significant growth in the use of aspiration technology in these applications and many more for its ability to meet specific challenges. “Ever-evolving safety standards and insurance prerequisites are driving fire protection to new levels, which is in turn increasing the demand for advanced detection technologies. Next generation ASDs such as FAAST from Honeywell, go one stage further, incorporating state-of-the art technologies designed to deliver the earliest and most accurate fire detection in the most challenging applications, while removing the false alarm issues that plague so many sites and industries.” For more information Website: www.honeywellnow.com

Fike Launches Cloud-based Fire Alarm Management Solution
F
ike Safety Technology (FST) has released Nimbus, a new solution for the monitoring and management of remote fire alarm systems over the internet. At the heart of the system is a cloud-based database, which receives data from fire alarm systems via the GPRS mobile network. In addition to FST’s own TWINFLEXpro and Duonet fire alarm systems, Nimbus also works with the majority of analogue addressable control panels from all of the major manufacturers. The primary application of Nimbus is to log, manage and administrate the commissioning, servicing, maintenance, testing, performance and day to day use of the connected fire alarm systems. Data is stored in a secure database and accessed via a standard web browser on any internet enabled device. Event notifications are sent via email and/or SMS
Nimbus cloud-based fire alarm management.
messaging. Nimbus is the ideal management tool for Service, Building and Estate Managers who need to maintain a lifetime electronic log of their fire alarm systems. Fire alarm installers and service companies can also benefit from Nimbus, by offering it as a value-added service to their customers and using it help streamline their own service operation. Nimbus centralises all fire alarm system activity through a single cross-platform management tool and provides a detailed electronic history of the system throughout its use and life. The Nimbus database can provide an infinite log of all data, thereby overcoming the memory limits of fire alarm control panels. Fire alarm control panels are connected to Nimbus using a GRPS Gateway. This is a non-intrusive interface that connects to the panel’s serial or printer port and does not affect the function of the fire alarm system. Requiring no physical connection to telephone lines or clients IP network the GPRS Gateway provides the ideal communications path between the fire alarm system and Nimbus. Reports can be generated based on weekly testing, servicing and live activity. Users may also generate specific reports based on their own search criteria; e.g. date/time, mode, event, panel, loop, device and any protocol parameter. The common web interface simplifies the generation of reports and allows data to be exported to industry standard tools, such as an Excel spreadsheet, or simply printed. Energy-saving lights for hazardous areas: Compact, innovative LED design
R
. STAHL now offers compact LED-based tubular light fittings for use in Ex zones 1/21 and 2/22 that provide users with an alternative to typical linear luminaires. With a diameter of merely 55 mm, the new lights take up less than half the space required by conventional linear luminaires, and reach less than half their weight. What is most striking, however, is the design that makes the new 6036 series extraordinarily light-efficient: 30 four-foot long LED-based tubular light fittings, for instance, ensure an illuminance of approximately 500 lx, which would usually require 35 linear luminaires with two 36 W fluorescent tubes each – or alternatively 48 conventional box-type units retrofitted with LEDs. However, R. STAHL’s new lights consume only about half as much power and the specific power consumption per 100 lx is merely 1.5 W/m². This ensures enormous savings regarding operating costs – depending on the comparative solution and the time frame, just under 20% to more than 50% savings are realistic in practice.
Even at an ambient temperature of +60 °C, they reach a lifetime of 80,000 hours. The vibration-proof units are IP66/ IP67-protected by default, resulting in excellent suitability for maritime applications. In addition to ATEX and IECEx certificates, they also feature certificates for many major markets (GOST, Gazpromnadzor, UL do Brasil, GL).
About R. STAHL : For more than 80 years, R. STAHL has been a trendsetting manufacturer of safety technology for hazardous areas. Based in Waldenburg, Germany, the company is one of the world’s leading suppliers of explosion-protected automation, control and distribution, installation, operating and monitoring, lighting, signaling and alarm components and systems. Key products include customer-specific systems solutions for hazardous areas. R. STAHL’s individual packages containing tailored product combinations and a wide range of services such as consulting, project planning, engineering and training courses for customers are designed to fully meet application requirements and customer needs. International certifications, approvals and patents demonstrate the company’s expertise and allow for R. STAHL’s products to be used throughout the world. For more information, Web: www.stahl.de
The tubular light fittings can be operated in a very wide temperature range from -40 to +60 °C. The maintenance-free units are suitable for general lighting purposes or for use as machine lamps. Due to their slim design, they can be installed in hard-to-access locations.

CP PLUS ensures Security and Smooth manufacturing process at BWI Plant
F
actories and other manufacturing facilities can benefit from the security provided by video surveillance. Theft of raw materials like lumber, copper and steel is at an all-time high, and thieves are targeting factories and other storage facilities with higher frequencies. Many factories also rely on highly guarded trade secrets to remain competitive. A comprehensivesystem of security cameras can help protect building, employees, and materials, as well as help management remain competitive in a growing market.
Mission BWI Automotive Technologies Pvt. Ltd, a manufacturing arm of China based BWI Group, has set up a new Auto Components project at Dharuhera in Rewari, Haryana. The plant manufactures Motor Vehicle Parts likefront suspensions, trusts and shock absorbers. As one of the world’s most technically advanced producers of high quality automobile products for small and premium segment, BWI management wanted to introduce CCTV surveillance to monitor production processes and to ensure Health and Safety policies were being followed. After analyzing analogue, hybrid and IP based CCTV systems, the managementzeroed in on IP based system. They selected IP because it allowed them to easily integrate CCTV with their existing network while benefiting from cost-saving technologies such as PoE (Power over Ethernet), UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supplies), break-free recording with 100% fail proof redundancy and support for the latest megapixel camera resolution that is only available with IP cameras.
Challenges CP PLUS team faced the following challenges and requirements at the workplace, which observes all day human, material & machine movement and activities: Privacy – Protect the privacy of employees

by keeping cameras in public areas likemanufacturing and administrative areas, and out of break rooms and restrooms. Damage – Cameras that monitor manufacturing processes or heavy machinery can bedamaged by falling parts or malfunctioning machinery. Outages – Disruptions in power or electrical surges can damage system or interrupt recording, and may leave manufacturing plant vulnerable to theft or other damages. While this type of damage is rare, it’s important to have a backup form of security to protect employees and building should this type of disruption occur. “The risk generally varies throughout a manufacturing plant, with areas where high-value raw materials, mostly processed one, are being handled posing the highest risk. Therefore, the level of security in various areas varies depending on the risk profile. Companies might also rely on surveillance equipment to provide them with feedback on safe work practice” Yogesh Dutta, COO, AdityaInfotech Ltd., added.
Solution CP PLUS team was equipped with a long experience to cater to any surveillance needs for any business vertical analyzed the client requirement and suggested a solution. The team decided to place cameras in entryways and exits of manufacturing areas and different workshops. HD cameras wereinstalledinshipping/receiving areas to capture a good shot of each visitor who enteredthe plant.CP PLUS team made sure cameras in open areas like work floors and storage areas are covered comprehensively by cameras in each corner, or by dome cameras mounted on the ceiling. The team coveredmore sensitive areas (e.g. dangerous machinery, valuable raw materials, etc)with vandal and weatherproof HD cameras. Solution details: Camera CP-EAC-DY65ML2H1: 650 TVL High
Resolution Camera, High Resolution IR Dome Camera with OSD - 20 mtr, 1/3” Sony Super HAD II CCD with AGC, AWB and BLC features. CP-QAC-TC72L2-D: High Quality Image Sensor, 720 TVL High Resolution Camera, 3.6 mm Fixed Lens, IR Range of 20 mtr with 24 LEDs, IP66, AGC, AWB and BLC.
Results For the BWI, IP CCTV solution has more than proved its worth by saving costs, improving time and ensuring machinery is performing safely. The system is also highly flexible to deal with the fluctuating and often challenging environmental conditions across the site. Other benefits offered are: Theft Prevention Security cameras have discouraged theft as such incidents have reduced significantly. The modern surveillance camera helpsadministrative authorities to identify the thief and prosecute them. Quality control Video surveillance cameras helpedthe authorities to monitor and achieve quality control faster and more efficiently. Remote monitoring NVR (Network Video Recorder) broadcaststhe security footage at the plant over the internet to the authorized staff; making it easy to check up on any of your cameras at any time. Workplace safety Surveillance cameras placed near dangerous machinery are monitoring automated processes safely and are protecting employees from harm. Easy to install A surveillance system with IP (Internet Protocol) cameras is easy to install and maintain. Unlike their analog counterparts, which require power tools and technicians, all you need to do is mount the cameras and connect them to your video recorder or a computer. key parameters like emissions -a regulatory issue and grave concern for environment, temperatures, discharge of waste, etc. Besides this, protection of the perimeter of the plant against any illegal intrusion is key to the safety. In large and environment critical installations as large as thermal plants, strict adherence to the process and regulations is a mandatory requirement to ensure smooth operations. All critical monitoring was carried out largely with physical and conventional security. This left security vulnerable to manipulations and potential sabotages. So, a complete and fool-proof security, independent of complete human intervention was required.

without any black hole or security compromise. The team identified locations where installation of analog cameras can leverage to monitor not only emissions but also surveillance of the chimneys, DM water plant, perimeters and the EDP area. Since cameras were located at relatively longer relative distances, various parameters and factors were considered while laying the cables and selecting other peripherals to ensure optimum working of the system. The safety and longer life of cableswas ensured by passing them through PVC conduits. This offered the long-term benefits. This made system maintenance free for a long period. To enhance protection from exposed to the harsh arid weather, high quality switches and RJ 45 connectors were installed. All the connections were properly sealed and secured to avoid dust and moisture going into the connections. After analyzing the locations and system requirement, and discussing with power plant management, the team decided to deploy HDCVI solutions. HDCVI range of solutions is ideal choice where analog solution needs to be upgraded for HD video quality. The other big advantageof HDCVI technology is loss free signal transmission over long distances as far as 500 feet. The cables can carry audio and video signals on the sane cable, which saves infrastructure cost substantially. With HDCVI, operation and maintenance costs are quite favorable. The CP PLUS team selected following cameras: CP-UVC-T1100R5: Image Sensor: 1/2.9

FUTURE SECURITY INDUSTRY TREND According to Mr. Vikas Saxena, Sr. Vice President - Operations at G4S Security Systems (I) Pvt. Ltd - “ The trend that will drive the Security Industry in near future would be its increasing contribution towards the productivity management apart from the core security element only and would be built over the theme of ‘Convergence’ including a) convergence of technologies e.g. Security & IP; b)convergence of systems e.g. Security, Fire, BMS; c)convergence of control e.g. Central Command Centre; d)convergence of response e.g. Security Monitoring & QRT. Mr. Yogesh B. Dutta, COO, Aditya
Mr. Sanjeev Sehgal, Managing Director, Sparsh www.ind-safety.com
Infotech Ltd. said “ In the last few years, technological advancement in video surveillance has helped in shaping the industry. Consistent with the on-going demand from heightened security needs, the video security market continues to experience a technology transition from relatively passive analogue CCTV video systems to more sophisticated network-based IP video solutions that include integrated analytics. In sync with global market trends, we foresee that IP technology, integrated solutions, and cloud storage may drive the future markets driven by continuous technological enhancements, such as Storage Area Network (IP SAN) for storage, scalability, video analytics, face recognition and so on.” Mr. Sagar Gosalia, Sr. Vice President – Marketing & Sales, Matrix Comsec added that The future is going to be towards higher end analytics and “PUT TO USE” rather than cosmetic security. Gone are the days when recording an event or set of events was good enough for security. In today’s time, consumers are asking “I have terabytes of records. What do I do with it?” This is exactly going to be the future of security. The new age solutions are going to address this need of the consumers. Also in terms of “PHYSICAL ACCESS CONTROL”, we as India are just scratching the surface. The
future is in terms of complex algorithms for “PHYSICAL ACCESS CONTROL”, basically defining – “WHO should be in WHICH place at WHAT time”. Mr. Sanjeev Sehgal, MD Sparsh also said that - “With technological advancement and changing customer needs the analogue video surveillance have been shifting to network video surveillance. Apart from technology there have been shift on the product side too from box to fixed-dome cameras & PTZ (pan-tiltzoom) dome cameras. In continuous pursuance of clarity standard (medium) resolution have replaced high resolution cameras & from standard dynamic range to wide dynamic range (WDR) cameras. In the recording space DVRs are being replaced by network video recorders and external storage. HD CCTV video surveillance equipment is the fastest growing segment in Analog space and the next big promising segment.”
BUDGET EXPECTATIONS : Mr. Yogesh B. Dutta, COO, Aditya Infotech Ltd. said that , “We expect the Government to continue the momentum and thrust on infrastructure and manufacturing sincewe believe that CCTV growth and infrastructure development go hand in hand. We, therefore, are confident ofa significant boost from INDUSTRIAL SAFETY REVIEW | FEBRUARY 2015 | 49

security Industry perspective. However, we expect to rationalize the tariff structure across security sector. CCTV is no more a luxury item, yet manufacturers and distributors are paying hefty taxes on it. Lack of government support in this area has been encouraging unorganized players to evade taxes and dump inferior security products in India. Moreover, we expect the government to pull down import tariffs to a more feasible level, which will enable easy access to security products at an affordable cost. Since surveillance is not a luxury item, we expect the government authorities to treat the Surveillance industry as per with IT. These initiatives will also encourage the local manufacture of security product. According to Mr.Vikas Saxena, G4S - The Electronic Security industry is important in view of fact that there has been increase in crime rates, low conviction rate, income levels, terrorism & insurgency, police modernization, investment in modern Infrastructure. The phenomenon gains higher magnitude with evolving demographic changes with more & more nuclear family structures with working couples across the ever-growing Tier II & Tier III cities and thus making security as an

essential necessity with the direct consumers. At present Custom Duties for most of the Safety & Security Products are quite high with a peak of around 27% so as to compare these products with luxury goods, whereas these have become necessity today. This has led to the cost of ownership of these products being high and not becoming affordable across a majority of consumer base. It is proposed that basic custom duty on such products should be lowered significantly in order to make these products more widely affordable and to make available standardized security equipment which are available to other countries so that effective measures may be undertaken to prevent security threat to the public. To give an example with the custom duty reduction on GPS and GPRS enabled mobile phones from 34% to 4%, there has been a high growth of applications like security related to location finding, emergency response, etc. Mr. Sagar Gosalia, Matrix Comsec added that Indian manufacturers are capable of developing high end solutions. What takes more time is easy availability of material especially controllers/ processors/components. The expectation from budget is on two fronts:
(1) Ease availability of these components and also encourage local manufacturing and (2) Lucrative options for manufacturers to participate in the world forums to show case “MAKE IN INDIA products. Mr.Sehgal, Sparsh pointed out thatThe Indian Budget is going to be a more important event this time than it usually has been as it will be the first full year budget under the new government We expect government to take major initiative for creating an investor friendly environment in the country, so that more fund flows into the anufacturing sector. Special initiatives like Infrastructure development, upgradation and incentives could act as a catalyst for Make in India vision success. In order to make India a manufacturing hub and take forward Make in India vision, Government of India needs special interventions like promoting Indian companies, incentives in terms of tax benefits and schemes like Preferential market access. Financial assistance to Small and Medium enterprises would be required to compete with multinational companies. With government planning for Smart cities, impetus is required specifically for security industry to make this vision possible. www.ind-safety.com

In future, people will come to know the difference between quality products with advanced technology and cheaper products with only cost advantage. That will push the growth in upward direction and overall quality of the projects that we execute.

P PLUS, a world leaderin high performance security surveillance products and solutions introduces accessories forvideo surveillance devices. These accessories are indispensable andfacilitate much required flexibility and extensibilityto the video surveillance system without loss of signal and video quality. These accessories include range of Video baluns- active and passive video transceivers. A Video Balun is a good choice for long cable runs. Coaxial (RG59) cable is usually the best medium for transmitting video, however, video traveling on RG59 is limited to about 600 feet before video quality degrades. Video Baluns allow signal to travel over Cat5E for several thousand feet. Additionally, Cat5E cable is less expensive and easier to pull. Passive video Baluns work in 800 - 1000 feet range. Active Video Balun transceivers can extend the range to 6,000 feet, but they require power (12 V DC) with UTP port RJ45. A passive video balun can receive and transmit video signals over UTP(CAT 5) wire without using the power supply. Another advantage of transmitting video over Cat5e cable is that you have multiple pairs of wires. Typically you have 4 pairs of 22 gauge wire in a Cat5E cable, so you can use one Cat5e cable for
4 security cameras. CP PLUS video baluns support most of the video device, such as camera, monitor, DVR card and recorder etc. These baluns are available for 1,4 and 16 channels. The CCTV Balun finds applications in the following areas: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8.

VIVOTEK Outperforms Competitors in Trial: Wins Privilege of Providing Mongolia’s Largest Commercial Bank, Khan Bank, with the Latest Surveillance System
Kahn Bank: Helping Mongolia Grow Since 1991 Khan Bank is Mongolia’s largest commercial bank. It provides banking services to an estimated 70 per cent of Mongolian households. Established in 1991, Khan Bank has continued to grow and expand its service since its inception. Khan Bank has 530 branches throughout Mongolia and provides comprehensive banking services to individuals and companies. Never settling for the status-quo, Khan Bank has also continuously invested in technology to enhance the quality of service it provides its customers, such as an extensive ATM network covering Ulaanbaatar, aimag capital and major district centers and nationwide access to internet and mobile banking. Moreover, the rapid growth and development of Khan Bank is expected to continue as Mongolia continues to perform economically. This young bank is preparing to gallop, like
Mongolia’s world famous horses, into the future.
The Challenge: Khan Bank’s Previous Security System Unable to Keep Pace. A Trial is Held to Determine the Ideal Solution. In this climate of rapid growth and expansion, Khan Bank required a thoroughbred surveillance system which could keep pace with its changing demands and keep Khan Bank ahead of the field. At the heart of any bank is its ability to secure its customers’ property, and as such the safes at each of Khan Bank’s branches required the utmost level of security. Unfortunately, the bank’s previous security system was not able to keep up with Khan Bank’s security needs, leading to a need to revolutionize its entire security system. The bank needed high quality and high megapixel surveillance cameras not only for its central headquarters, but for every branch across urban and rural areas, and all ATMs in the Ulaanbaatar area. In order to determine which surveillance system could provide them with the absolute best performance for this vast network, Khan Bank decided to run a trial between the leading providers of security systems, including VIVOTEK.
The Solution: VIVOTEK – Ahead of the Field and Ready to Help. No stranger to a challenge, VIVOTEK, along with local distributor ITZONE LLC’s highly qualified and experienced engineers and sales team, were able to

Continued from page no.70 provide the strongest solution and exceed Khan Bank’s demanding expectations. A total of 675 VIVOTEK cameras were installed across Khan Bank’s Mongolian network. The broad coverage, high resolution, variable focus and specialized design of VIVOTEK cameras ensured that Khan Bank’s offices, branches, safes, ATMs and entrances could all be monitored on a secure and stable high-performance IP network system. Khan Bank, thoroughbred among Mongolian banks, had finally found a surveillance system that could keep pace.
High-Quality IP Cameras Secure a Vast Network of Banking Facilities. The largest demand for coverage was found in the halls of Khan Bank branches. These wide spaces required cameras with extremely wide-angle coverage and high image quality, while also blending in with the interior design of the bank’s branches. For this task, ITZONE LLC chose VIVOTEK’s FE8174 for its combination of high coverage, high quality and low profile. The FE8174 is capable of 180 degree panoramic views while mounted on the wall, or 360 degree surround views if mounted on the ceiling. The FE8174 also offers a variety of display options including original surround view, panoramic view, and regional view for various mounting applications. In addition, in both the panoramic as well as regional viewing modes, users can utilize the ultra-smooth ePTZ function to easily
zoom in and focus on a region of interest (ROI). All of these features mean that the FE8174 was able to provide superb coverage of all of Khan Bank’s branch halls. The VIVOTEK FD8136 ultra-mini fixed dome network camera was chosen for this central task. Its tiny profile hides an incredibly high-tech camera, capable of producing high quality imagery in a variety of formats. For public and outdoor spaces, VIVOTEK’s FD8355EHV and the FD8371EV were adopted. For ATM coverage, the FD8355EHV 1.3 MP fixed dome network camera, featuring WDR Pro II, 30 Meter IR, 3D Noise Reduction and Smart Focus system, offered unbeatable coverage in any lighting conditions, day and night. For outdoor spaces, particularly the entrances of Khan Bank’s branches, more than fifty FD8371EVs were installed across its network, allowing high-megapixel coverage in difficult operating environments. The FD8371EV is ideal for such solutions, able to withstand Mongolia’s extreme weather conditions and safe from any attempts at
vandalism or tampering. To add to the functionality of their system, Khan Bank uses Milestone XProtect® Enterprise, which is an easy-to-use video management software platform designed especially for large-scale and multi-site surveillance applications. It supports intuitive control of an unlimited number of cameras for monitoring live video, recording, and sharing evidence. All the video captured across multiple branches can be transmitted back to the main XProtect management and displays in the central control room. The security staff can instantaneously view events at different sites via the unified, intuitive interface, increasing bank operational efficiency and speeding the reaction time whenever events occur.
The Latest Surveillance Solution, the Simplest Installation Finally, this rejuvenation of Khan Bank’s surveillance systems, providing the bank with a total best-of-breed security solution, was able to be achieved remarkably easily. Thanks to VIVOTEK’s efforts to provide high-tech surveillance systems which are able to be installed easily and are also simple to maintain, Khan Bank’s new surveillance system not only provides remarkable advances in coverage and reliability, it also simplifies the entire process of surveillance and footage retrieval. As a result of this upgrade, Khan Bank can now feel free to expand and grow with Mongolia, safe in the knowledge that VIVOTEK is running alongside and keeping pace. Zebion launches intrusion alert systems designed to intercept burglars in the act Pune Mayor and Famous Jeweller Ranka inaugurates
P
une based Electronics Company, Zebion, have launched a contemporary range of intrusion alert devices named Argoz, suitable for Homes, Offices and Warehouses. These devices have an instant notification facility as soon as unauthorized trespass occurs, either by dialling out to the owner’s mobile number or through a smart APP. The dial out can be followed by an SMS and the owner can nominate secondary, tertiary or more numbers in case the primary contact number is unavailable. The Argoz intrusion detection system can have an attached hooter or siren. However many would prefer not to startle the burglar, but rather engage
law enforcements authorities instantly to nab the culprit while still in the act. At a media launch event in Le Méridien Pune, Zebion’s Director and CEO, Yogesh Dagaleexplained “With the incidence of break-inand thievery on the rise in virtually every setting (residential and commercial) Argoz opens a new chapter in society’s fight against crime”. Another Zebion Director, Abhishek Lodha, added “Argoz instantly relays information about a break-in at the very moment the crime occurs. This empowers the property owner to exercise the best option available. While the most obvious reaction could be to inform the police, one could also inform friends, neighbours or the society office”. For years, citizens and law enforcers have felt that CCTV systems alonewere insufficient when trying to ensure holistic securityof a premises or prevent crime. While CCTV remainsessential,

and in some cases indispensable, their primary function is to facilitatepost-incident analysis, not crime prevention. As Saurabh Dey, Zebion’s CMO, explained “Argoz and CCTV are complementary products, & they work synergistically”. In view of the increasingly daring crimes in our cities and the fact that burglars are using smarter methods to bypass conventional security arrangements, Abhinandan Dagale, COO avers that “we areempowering citizens to stay one-step-aheadwith Argoz, and feel secure at all times”.
No false alarms Zebion’s extensive consumer research has revealed that the single biggest hurdle to widespread adoption of intrusion alert systems in the past has been a bothersome rate of false alarms. Consequently, the company spent 24 months in the development of an innovative new design that involves twin half-cupped sensors and a combination of both infrared and microwaves to provide a dependable, error-free intrusion detection system. “Our Dual Detection Twin Field (DDTF) technology is a paradigm shift over earlier systems because it is immune to disturbing false alarms caused by innocuous objects such as birds, lizards, or warm swayingdrapes which may accidentally come within range”, explains Dey. To this Lodha added “Our DDTF devices are only triggered by humans with a body weight over 30Kgs and a height of over 3.5 feet. So you never have to suffer the anguish of receiving an alert www.ind-safety.com

only to find later it was caused by a pet”.
Four variants Named after the mythical Greek God Argos, who had a hundred eyes and could see everything, Argoz comes in four variants for different environments and needs. While ArgozRegular has a coverage range of 18 feet, suitable for one large room, Argoz Plusand Argoz Via can have a series of extenderunits bringing a large area under watch, such as a villa, large apartment, multi-level store or multi-story office. The most advanced model Argoz Grandis based on IP technology and comes with a built-in camera. It grabs a photograph of the coverage area as soon as intrusion occurs and sends it to the owner’s cell phone through a mobile app. Argoz Grand enables the owners to remotely surveil their premises when the intrusion occurs.
Easy installation and maintenance Yogesh Dagale pointed out that all Argoz products are incredibly easy to setup and works on the DIY principal. He said “Argoz is effortless to setup and needs no technical knowledge. It requires very low maintenance”.

the citizens of the city feel safer and the law enforcement agencies better equipped to apprehend criminals supported by instant and actionable input from residents. Jeweller FatehchandRanka, was the second Chief Guest at the event and spoke about the utility of Argoz in the luxury retail sector space. Mr. Ranka said “security is obviously paramount for susceptible industries like Jewellery, Gems Stones, Silversmiths, Designer Labels, Watches and others. Argoz seems to be apt not just for large stores like ours, but even more so for small jewellery stores”. Another panellist, Dr.Basu, a bungalow owner inAundh suffered a burglary in 2011 and underscored the need for all homes to have intrusion alert systems.
He said “In 2011, while the whole family was on vacation, my bungalow was burglarized. We did not know until much later that burglary has occurred. I feel every home would be better off with one; why take a chance”. The launch event was well attended by businessmen, traders, realtors and property owners of Pune. This included Rajinder Singh, Chief Engineer of Mantri Constructions. Another panellist, Jaswantraj Sirohiya, proprietor of a popular novelty store, vouched for Argoz as an essential security device for various retail outlets. He said, “Argoz is not a nice to have, it’s a must have. Argoz gives me peace of mind and self-assurance when I lower the shutter at night. In the unlikely occasion that one of my own staff needs to reopen the shop at a late hour I can disarm the device via SMS through my cell phone”. Zebion envisages Argoz as more than a one-off product. It is a building block within a much larger security framework, aptly named the Z-Level. This framework is designed to offer all-embracingsecurity to any property, and includes both electronic and mechanical devices in a seamlessly integrated structure. The Z-Level framework is under rigorous testing currently and Zebion expects to formally launchit in May. For more information, Website: www.zebion.in INDUSTRIAL SAFETY REVIEW | FEBRUARY 2015 | 75

Retro-Fit: The Trend of Up-Scaling Security Systems Hope for the Best, Prepare for the Worst Whether a system is secure or not crucially depends on the complex interplay of its components and the assumptions about its environment. A single weakness can compromise the security of the entire system can cause high damage in terms of financial and legal implications.
Why Retro-fit? Many systems are developed without keeping scalability and future requirements in mind. Changing the systems which get obsolete with time not only invites huge expenses in terms of time & money but creates a lot of disorderliness in daily operations. Says Drs. Hans van Griethuysen, CEO of Sellox Group, “In the last 40 years I have spent in the industry I came across many installations where customers opted for security system which go obsolete in few years, inevitably

creating a niche market for scalable retro-fit systems”.
Benefits All Along! Old legacy systems are much more prone to incidents involving poor detection, false alarms and excessive maintenance alerts. Operating a legacy system may be advantageous initially if we aim to control the life-cycle costs; however, investing in newer technology offers tremendous financial benefits by saving on high maintenance cost; and better security of course. A retrofit security solution provides the customer with a cost-effective upgrade path while allowing it to retain some of its previous investments and positively impacting his bottom line.

the Access Rights of an individual. The system also provides a detailed Audit Trail/Track Record as to “Who accessed Which lock and When. This gives the security manager full and state of the artcontrol over access points with very low maintenance in the field”.

much more number of access points within the same budget as compared to few years back. With virtual networks taking over, all the communication now happens wirelessly with the system. Investing in retrofitting and upgrading existing mechanical locks to a web based management system not only offers greater control over the system & more functionality but also is more affordable as it comes at a fraction of cost of wired security system. Continues Drs. Hans, “Customers today want a minimally-disruptive replacement program and an opportunity to save money by reducing their maintenance cost.We at Sellox Group offer a non-wired Retro-fit Access Control Solution called Cylock where in the mechanical cylinder of a lock is replaced with smart electronic cylinders. With all communication happening wirelessly, Cylock does not need any wiring or a power source (not even batteries) as the cylinder is energized by the battery in the Cykey. One Cykey can be used to access close to 15,000 different locks; depending on
A correct retrofit solutionshould allow customer to re-use as much of his existing infrastructure such as current readers, cards, power supplies, cabinets and his wiring. When a customer is able to reuse these components, it not only saves his time but also the overall replacement cost. It’s in the best interest of the system integrator also to work towards a retrofit solution as less or no time is wasted in pulling wires and rewiring the new system. Thus the integrator increases his bottom line by quickly installing the system and moving on to his next job. It also offers an excellent opportunity to the integrator to earn customer’s trust by smoothly upgrading his security system with minimal disruption.
No need for “Cleansing the System” A serious problem in old infrastructure is that as systems become obsolete they are migrated to new technologies but without “cleansing” the existing system – The old wires and cables are not reused but neither are they removed while relaying the new cables. Says Drs. Hans, “In my various trips to Indian Government blocks I came across several offices with loose unused wires making desperate calls to be cleared out. These wires not only give the offices an unsightly look but also present a potential fire hazard.” To sum it all, we are witnessing a new era of integrated security solutions facilitated by ‘intelligent’ devices connected to internet and low cost of installations. The developments in IT and internet have thrown open countless possibilities to the customer enabling him to create a secure system comprising a maze of security layers. very electrical equipment’s, appliance, system must be Earthed or grounded to obtain a low resistance path for dissipation of current into the earth. Earthing plays an important role in Generation, Transmission & Distribution for safe and proper operation of any electrical installation. Ground fault current directly has an impact on human safety. Major accidents happen due to improper Earthing. Leakage current passes through human body and fatality occurs. Even every Overhead line / Sub station / Generator station which is exposed are liable to injury from lightning. In electricity supply systems, an earthing or grounding system is circuitry which connects parts of the electric circuit with the ground, thus defining the electric potential of the conductors relative to the Earth’s conductive surface. In particular, it affects the magnitude and distribution of short circuit currents through the system, and the effects it creates on equipment and people in the proximity of the circuit. If a fault within an electrical device connects a live supply conductor to an exposed conductive surface, anyone touching it while electrically connected to the earth will complete a circuit back to the earthed supply conductor and receive an electric shock. Electricity most often hurts a man not causing extreme physical injuries

but by merely shocking the life out of the body suddenly. This is due to life and electricity in minute form being closely inter-related so that a small current can prove fatal. When body is alive it is found to maintain a potential difference between its inside and outside. Galvany in 1780 proved that all live muscles contract when electricity applied. When contraction due to electricity is more that will power contract and relaxes which brings to death due to electric shocks. The current affect heart muscles and when contract become too powerful, muscles bewildered and fall in state of flutter, called ventricular fibrillation, the heart stops functioning. It will be proper to know what current and potentials are safe to handle.
Importance of Proper Grounding Systems.
Earthing
/
• The main reason for proper earthing in electrical network is for the safety. When all metallic parts in electrical equipments are grounded then if the insulation inside the equipments fails there are no dangerous voltages present in the equipment case. • If the live wire touches the grounded case then the circuit is effectively shorted and fuse will immediately blow. When the fuse is blown then the dangerous voltages are away. • Purpose of Earthing in an electric INDUSTRIAL SAFETY REVIEW | FEBRUARY 2015 | 103

power system is to limit, with respect to the general mass of earth, the potential of current carrying conductors, which are part of the equipment, non-current carrying metal works, associated with the equipment, apparatus and appliances connected to the system. • It is also important to take precautions against leakage of current. Insulation Resistance values should be checked periodically. It is also necessary to maintained Earthing properly of all electrical Installation. As the same time it is also very important at regular interval to check and if required unproper Earthing should be repaired. The records should be maintained if results are poor, action should be taken to be improved.
Measurement Of Earthing / Grounding - The Most Neglected Subject Today ! Old Measurement Methods with Four Spikes, hand generating are: Old Measurement Methods is called fall of potential method./ In this method earth grid is to be isolated from the earth electrode. Two auxiliary electrodes – one current electrode and another potential electrode are placed besides the electrode to be tested at equal distance in a straight line. A measured current is passed through the auxiliary current electrode. The potential difference developed between the auxiliary potential electrode and the electrode to be tested is measured. Resistance is calculated from the above current and voltage values. Normally in the site we use three lead digital earth testers for the measurement. In the field the condition of earthing is so poor and normally earth resistance or leakage current is not measured either because of prevailing tedious & time consuming methods or handy instruments

were not available. Many a times the important aspect of proper earthing is neglected resulting in complex problems associated with poor earthing. The Distribution Transformers fail because of earthing not being proper and lightening arrestors do not carry out their work. In case of HT consumers the meter behaves erratic as unbalance voltages are recorded due to poor earthing. To ensure proper monitoring of earthing it is necessary to give a handy and easy to use equipment to the field staff. Now Latest Handy Instruments are available to measure Ground / Earth Resistance and Leakage Current on Live Load By just clamping to the grounding lines without disconnecting the circuit or Driving auxiliary electrodes. MECO Introduce Clamp-On Earth / Ground Resistance Tester Model 4680BL & 4680BLC, which can measure ground resistance from 0.099 Ohms ~ 1000 Ohms & Leakage Current from 80mA ~ 30A AC by just clamping to the grounding lines without disconnecting the circuit or driving Auxiliary Electrodes. Suitable for Flat Strip (Jaw Size 65 mm), Data hold, Data Storing Memory, Auto power off & Continuity Loop Test are Key features of 4680BL / 4680BLC. It Is based on an unique principal in which a pre-defined current is injected in the ground circuit under test and then the induced magnetic current there by generated in the circuit is measured at a high frequency by use of special clamp -on current transformer in the instrument. This is an extremely handy instrument especially at place where it is next to impossible to measure Earth /Ground Resistance by conventional methods. Substantial time saving and easy operating justify the investment in these instruments Regulations for earthing system vary considerably among countries and among different parts of electric systems. The objectives of Maintaining Proper Earthing is very good but the road ahead is very long, rough and tardy but with the cooperation and strong will, nothing is impossible. www.ind-safety.com

What Industry Expects from a Safety Manager Col A.K. Sehgal (Retd), Retd. Vice President (Safety, Health, Environment), ITD Cementation India Ltd., Mumbai Email: aksehgal45@gmail.com 1. Introduction I feel extremely privileged to have been given an opportunity to speak about and pen down a few lines on a subject “What industry Expects from a Safety manager” - the subject close to my heart and about which I am extremely passionate. Speaking on the eve of Independence Day on 14 Aug 2003 our erstwhile President Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam emphasized importance of being Safety Conscious in embarking on the national mission of transforming the nation and he said “When we are consolidating our strengths, we should develop increased safety consciousness to prevent loss of valuable human and material resources”- this would be possible with communication of the facts at the right time, to the right people and at the right place. I also remember one of the actors asking a question, “Picture kin teen chizon se chaltihai” to which the undisputed answer was “entertainment, entertainment and entertainment”. The question to be asked about safety is “Safety kin teen Chizon se chaltihai” and to that the prompt answer would be “communication, communication and communication”. Communication is the very fabric of safety. Effective Communication has a great part to play in implementing safety and who would be best suited for that role – I think none other than a safety manager himself. Before we discuss as to what industry expects from a safety manager, let us review the status of safety in various industries. Safety standards in general all across are on an upward trend; there is general concern for safety of personnel, property and environment but we are still far from being passionate about “Zero Tolerance”. In fact in certain sectors, it is still as good as paying a lip service. We

there would be negligible improvement.
2. Challenges Faced by a Safety Manager
have fat well documented procedures but very few being implemented. Many safety managers are not so serious and perform their duties as a matter of routine; accidents do not matter to them and they try to hide facts. I am told that the Chief Labour Commissioner reported a total of eight fatalities and one major injury during a two years period – a figure far from truth. It may be well worth talking about an advertisement, we so often see on TV where a girl is shown informing her father “papa maine aapko bola thaki main Neha ke ghar padne ja rahi hun; maine aapko juth bola tha; main apne doston ke sath Lonawala aayihun. The worried father asked her as to why she was informing him then. The girl replied “Neend nahi aa rahi thi”. Evidently the girl was unable to sleep – the lie weighing heavily on her mind. Many of our executives and safety managers are no different. There is a general tendency to put a blanket over safety incidents and hide those. I wonder as to how we can improve without accepting our mistakes. Our first and foremost expectation, therefore, from a safety manager should be that of being truthful in reporting while displaying sincerity, loyalty and hard work. Unless there is truthful reporting,
Ensuring safety of workers being one of his prime responsibilities, a safety manager faces enormous challenges. He is required to not only have good knowledge of the rules and regulations but also has to be technically competent. A safety manager has to be an all-rounder having capability of executing projects / works in an efficient manner. He has to be as good in executing works, if not better than an execution manager. Many execution managers consider a safety manager as a hindrance to production. On many occasion, a safety manager gets ridiculed for making necessary corrections with allegations of finding faults and being a cause for delay in production. He is also subjected to wrath of the Government inspector who may be keen on earning his pound of flesh rather than being worried about health, safety and welfare of workers. Convincing workers to follow correct procedures and doing things the right way requires a safety manager to adopt innovative methods. A safety manager has to be Omni -present round the clock to observe and correct unsafe conditions so as to be effective on ground. Some of the outdated British era rules and regulations in vogue that a safety manager is required to implement keep everyone busy leading to fatigue and loss of interest. Lack of peer support and a silo approach makes the task of safety manager even more difficult and challenging.
3. Passion for Safety To achieve “Zero Tolerance”, towards www.ind-safety.com
SAFETY INDUSTRY » Tech Update
safety, a safety manager shoud have a desire and a passion for safety. This could be explained by four specific steps. Firstly, need to develop the desire and ability to create something no one has ever done or been able to do before. Secondly, need to acquire quality of persistence – the urge to keep convincing till the staff and workers follow safe procedures. Thirdly, to be dissatisfied – a successful mantra for successful men. Regardless of how outstanding their work appears to the world, safety officers themselves are never satisfied and are sure – if they had to do it over again, they could have done a better job. Fourthly; successful safety officers are never foiled by the limitations of the past, they know new opportunities lie ahead. A safety manager has to put himself in the shoes of an operational man, study the cycle of operations and come out with safety solutions. He has to be an innovator- introduces novel ideas at site to seek indulgence of each person at site in making operations safe and environment friendly. His involvement may vary from activating workers in carrying out critical study of each cycle of operations to nominating safety captains among workers’ groups, develop team building through esprit de corps, impart training and enforce discipline, morally empower and motivate managers, engineers, subcontractors and workers. A safety manager’s passion for safety is akin to passion of a mother towards her child. A child in mother’s arms is not likely to slip off and fall down. Similarly, a safety manager should act with a well-coordinated mind and heart and using his communication skills and passion should make contractors and workers feel that they are an indispensable part of the organization. He must ensure that the staff and workers do not slip off in safety matters. There is a dire need for a safety manger to face the realities at site and not start complaining that the execution staff does not listen; most managers have only profits in mind and could not care less about accidents and injuries. It is a safety manager who by his communication skills can make executives realize that safety would www.ind-safety.com
always add to the bottom line. For this, systems alone are not enough; they have to be backed by creative edge, educated and passionate mind of a safety manager who should be able to determine the right from not quite right and convince all concerned. Problems of observing safety are well known. India with large unskilled population – inherited characteristics, indifferent attitude has problems which are not very easy to overcome. A safety manager is expected to passionately motivate people to not only do different things but has to ensure that they do it differently. Some of the proactive actions of a safety manager could be • Establish link between all stake holders – customers, suppliers, raise awareness and promote best practices for “Zero tolerance”. • Earn respect of one and all by enhancing knowledge and communication skills. It is well said that “Knowledge is power”. • Be able to anticipate and visualize as to why people behave the way they do. Some examples to be studied in this regard are:» Why do people not use a safety harness while climbing up and down? » Why electricians tend to work at homes barefooted. No doubt, they are expected to remove shoes outside but surely they can use a rubber mat below their feet? » Why do people cross a road with fast moving traffic and not use foot over bridge? » Why do people drive fast? » Why do people sleep under parked vehicles? » Why operators are found drinking tea / coffee while operating machines?
4. Safety Officer as a Good Observer A safety officer should be able to observe good and bad behavior, motivate managers, supervisors and workers to correct anomalies at work place that would lead to good behavior. Indicators of good behavior would be pleasing and smart turnout of supervisors and workers, neat
and clean work place, up to date notice displays, good facilities and immediate clearing of litter. There is free & frank discussion about safety between the execution managers, workers and safety staff. Most work is preplanned in a methodical manner. On the other hand, non-reporting of incidents, high percentage of wastage, litter at site, dirty dangris, out of date and torn notice displays, poor turnout, unkempt hair and poor housekeeping are indicators of bad behavior. Many a managers walk around the work place not noticing unsafe acts / conditions and even if they do notice, no actions are initiated to correct bad behavior on the pretext of not being responsible for that particular work area. There is little inner concern to make the work place safe. On many an occasion, managers tend to take special cleanliness drives thus wasting precious production time. Managers often, very rightly, talk about costs but believe in adhocism and unplanned work. A safety officer should always make unbiased observations of safe behavior and that of unsafe acts / conditions, record them, give a feed-back and provide practical solutions to safety problems. For this, the safety manager has to change people’s beliefs, thinking and attitude by imparting skills, enhance their knowledge, empowering them and motivating them. A safety manager needs to set up a simple workable safety system; it does not matter whether it is OHSAS 18001 or IS 15001. The system should be based on realistic work methods which are actually being followed and are safe. He must set up high standards of work methods, fix small problems, carry out spot checks and audits, enforce operating procedures, impart effective training and conduct tests and inspections. A safety manager has to act in an unbiased manner and build trust among the execution staff, supervisors, subcontractors & workers by • Focusing on people – it is they who get injured • Listing critical behavior and arranging conduct of audit of employees by employees; when we talk of workers’ safety captains – this is preciously INDUSTRIAL SAFETY REVIEW | FEBRUARY 2015 | 107
SAFETY INDUSTRY » Tech Update
what they would be doing. • Ensuring two way communications with managers, supervisors and workers for achieving “Zero tolerance” behavior. • Influencing attitude of the staff and workers by: » Observing what they are doing – safe acts as well as unsafe acts » Motivating through discussion of safe / unsafe acts and analyzing possible consequences » Encouraging them to change behavior » Involving staff and workers in safety activities that go a long way in enhanced safety performance • Enhancing safety knowledge by: » Visualizing activities that can cause accidents and injuries » Analysing safety emergency situations and how to successfully deal with them » Imparting skills to overcome emergencies • Creating confidence among staff and workers by looking into welfare requirements like water, rest areas, sanitation, first aid and health care. It may be a good idea to ensure that the nails of cooks in the cook house and canteen are trimmed and clean.
5. Practical Aspects with Regard to Safety Role In lighter vein, we can state that a safety manager has to deal with two factories namely an ice factory on the head (Must remain cool all the time) and a sugar factory in the mouth (Sweetness shall always pay dividend). Some the practical aspects that must be followed by a safety manager are • Show empathy to workers. Be caring and do things for them as we do it for our own children. Give a chance to workers to raise their doubts and if they differ, give them a chance to explain their view point • Give a practical demonstration of safety devices and safe operations of equipment. It would be a good idea to give them a demonstration of reversing of vehicles or that of a lockout
108 | FEBRUARY 2015 | INDUSTRIAL SAFETY REVIEW
procedure. • While imparting training » Know the topic well, prepare and revise before each delivery » Use visual examples » Do a wrap up and reinforce important points » Choose timely topics » Review incidents / accidents with photographs and videos • Have a talk with the workers at the start of each shift. Start the meeting on a positive note; welcome and greet everyone. Raise the morale by appreciating all concerned for the job well done. There would be active participation of workers, if the meetings are informal. • Keep the meeting informal by making workers relax. The talk could be preceded by rubbing hands and an exercise to warm up and saying a prayer in own simple words. The talk should become an open ended session. • All procedures being followed should be periodically reviewed and incorporated. • Focus on emergency plans – an apt handling of emergency can save lives.
6. Leadership Characteristics For achievement of his goal of “Zero Tolerance”, a safety manager has to imbibe and display leadership qualities of the highest order. Some of the leadership qualities that would make a safety manager earn respect from his execution managers, supervisors, subcontractors, workers and peers are; oral and written skills, high moral values, courageous enough to face people, an eye for detail – high observation power, interpersonal skills, high integrity, good economic sense, humane and caring – a helping attitude, good subject knowledge, having patience and above all being truthful. It is important for a safety manager not to have a defeatist attitude but be a good crisis manager.
7. Conclusion A career in safety could be highly satisfying as one is responsible for safety of
many people. The job poses a big challenge as it involves exposure to dangerous working conditions, irregular working hours and many a times unstructured work schedule. For this, a safety manager has enormous responsibilities and their duties differ depending upon the specialty area they work in but all of them have a common objective – Safety at work place. Sustaining success is not a piece of cake in face of challenges that a safety manager faces. He has got to keep the spirit of learning alive & spirit of “Zero Tolerance” burning. A safety manager has to lead by example and display such qualities of leadership that would make him stand out, be respected and followed blindly without question. He has to be passionate about what he does and has to strongly believe in his ability to control events that would impact the individuals and companies they work in. He should have the ability to take personal responsibility and not blame it on others for whatever goes wrong. Very importantly, a safety manager should be able to gain confidence of the people he works with and establish and maintain relationship. For a safety manager, success stories are inspiring but it is equally important for him to learn from failures – one main expectation from him being that of creating an environment where there would be no accidents, whatsoever. Genuine love and caring attitude towards workers would help to create a safe working environment. Please remember that Ultimate objective of a safety manger should be to build a platform on which everything runs smoothly and that his presence or absence at the work place should have no bearing whatsoever on the safety performance of the company. With our ability to train in future, the academic institutes need to focus on creating a safety mind set. They would be required to impart safety training right from the graduate level thereby creating a pool of young people with right mind frame and incubation centres that shall help create and retain an attitude towards effective safety. This is the need of the hour. www.ind-safety.com

Video Door Phone System
About Author
A Mr. Kiron Kunte Kiron Kunte has over 35 years of design and solutions experience, in Security, Telephony and Networking
video door phone is a stand-alone intercom system for audio and video communications between the door to the apartment and or the entrance to a building (residential complex, independent family home, etc.) with the video phone placed inside the apartment. This enables the person indoors to identify the visitor and, if (and only if) they wish, engage in conversation and/or open the door to allow access to the person calling. Door phones allow one to communicate safely and from a distance and verify the credentials of the visitor thereby enhancing safety and security.

The outdoor panel or street panel is installed beside the entrance door or gate. It has one or several pushbuttons (usually one per home or apartment) for the visitor to call, a micro camera adapted for night vision to capture the image of the caller, a microphone to pick up the voice and a speaker to reproduce the voice of the occupant indoors. The panel installed on the outside of the door to the apartment, would be of similar design with the exception that it is generally an indoor unit with only one push button. The video monitor enables the occupant to see who has called, talk to the visitor and open the door. Installed indoors, the monitor consists of a screen showing the image of the person calling, a microphone and earpiece for conversation and a pushbutton to trigger a door lock release. The electric door release is a device installed in the door lock and is operated INDUSTRIAL SAFETY REVIEW | FEBRUARY 2015 | 111

from inside the residence to open the door to the visitor. In addition to outdoor panels with one pushbutton per apartment, it is possible to find others with a numeric keypad. This is generally designed for large residential complexes where the homes are identified by codes. Others have built-in cardholder panels or even small screens to guide the user. Some monitors have built-in storage to save the image of the visitor at the door.
the apartment. Integration with Video surveillance and PA systems
Must have features: • Both Audio and video communication. • In case of a breakdown in video communication the audio should continue to function. • The external camera and speaker box should be weather proof / water proof. • The outdoor camera should have an infrared illuminator. This feature enables identification of visitors in poor light conditions. • The external box and camera socket should be strong enough to resist vandalism. • A clear transparent plastic barrier to protect the camera lens. • An alarm that should be triggered when someone tries to interfere (i.e. vandalism) with the system. • Angle of vision. Applications that require a wider the field of view may opt for fish-eye lenses that give 180 degrees of clear vision.
Integrated Solution Video door entry systems are commonly found integrated with different access control systems. This means that features are built into the outdoor panel to allow pre-authorised users to access the premises. The most common means are proximity cards, fingerprint readers, a keypad for secret numbers or even Bluetooth triggered by mobile phone.
IP based video door phones also integrate with IP video surveillance systems thereby enabling a door phone user to view the ‘playground’ or ‘lobby’ or ‘basement’ from

Trends This is based on the reports from IHS and IMS. • Video door phone integration with home automation systems: The home automation market has grown considerably in recent years. Consumers want products to integrate into one system, with the possibility to control from either a smart mobile device, or a smart alarm/control panel. • Increased use of IP systems: IP door phone systems that have historically been focused on non-residential applications, are increasingly being used within the residential markets with the introduction of home automation applications. • Increased use of larger screen sizes with touch screen functionality: The video door phone market is following other technology markets. Like mobile phones and laptops there is increased demand for larger touch screen indoor units. Touch screen indoor units allow more functionality in the indoor unit and facilitate greater ease of integration. • Integration with other smart-home products, including intruder alarms, lighting controls, and heating systems.
S.O.P’s for using a Video Door Phone Once the door phone is installed it is important to adopt a new door answering routine. • Always use the door phone when answering the door. • Teach children to use the door phone when a caller arrives. • Inform the maid, cleaning assistant or anyone else involved in your household maintenance, that the door phone is to be used. • If a caller knocks on the door without using the video door phone, do not under any circumstance, open the door. A door phone is a familiar and large enough box to be visible to anyone. Refuse to answer the door unless the caller will make use of the door phone. If they refuse to use the door phone threaten to call the police. • If while having a conversation with a caller one realizes that the caller is hiding something from ones view, ask the visitor to politely show what they are holding. If they refuse, threaten to call the police. Instruct kids to act in the same manner. The door phone is there for the protection of the residents, use it. www.ind-safety.com

Milestone systems makes Newborn Rhino an online star Copenhagen Zoo uses Milestone XProtect® VMS to create online buzz about rare rhino birth. This is the first result of a strategic collaboration with Milestone on video-enabled experience in parks.
M
ilestone Systems, the open platform company in IP video management software (VMS), has entered a strategic collaboration with Copenhagen Zoo. One of the main aims behind this partnership is to use video as a tool to extend and enhance visitors’ experience and create new business possibilities for Copenhagen Zoo. The first successful event using the networked video technology was the online broadcast of the birth of a male rhino calf at the zoo, on January 24 this year. The broadcast attracted more than 35,000 views on YouTube and generated further media interest. Rhino births in zoos are rare and the last delivery in Copenhagen Zoo was in 1982. The
zoo has created a section on their website dedicated to the event. Holders of annual passes can now watch live video from the rhino pen and get more information on this endangered species. The video feeds from the zoo are currently only accessible to those who have an annual pass to the zoo. Copenhagen Zoo is very positive about the video technology possibilities in this strategic partnership with Milestone Systems. “Milestone has opened our eyes to new uses of video and shown us marketing opportunities that we had not discovered ourselves. The video software is not only helping us with safety and protection of the animals and staff – there are so many additional possibilities as well. It is a fascinating

new category of management tool that is expanding into our line of business,” says Steffen Straede, CEO at Copenhagen Zoo. “We see a very positive reaction from our patrons when we announce the birth of an animal. The use of video technology gives the zoo patrons the possibility to experience the animals close up and undisturbed.” The open platform technology in Milestone XProtect enables Copenhagen Zoo to pick camera brands and models that are perfectly suited to the highly challenging environment in the park. When the rhino calf was born, the national Danish broadcaster DR requested a live video feed from the rhino pen. The open architecture of the Milestone software helped facilitate this request on short notice, and the rhino calf became an instant media darling on Danish prime time television. “We are dedicated to furthering the benefits of open platform software to video-enable business. The use of video to enrich patrons’ experience of Copenhagen Zoo is a clear testimonial to the value of our technology, empowering through our technology to reach beyond monitoring and protecting the animals,” says Kenneth Hune Petersen, Chief Sales and Marketing Officer at Milestone Systems. ”We have an excellent relationship with Copenhagen Zoo, and we look forward to developing new concepts that can further enhance the experience of parks in the future.” For more information, Website: www.milestonesys.com www.ind-safety.com

The unutilized Private Security Sector in India
A
s per claims by Private Security industry experts in India, there are more than 70 lakh Security Guards working for different security companies in the Private Security Industry across all the States and Union Territories in India. This makes the Private Security Industry as one of the largest employers in India. The growth rate is assessed to be more than 20% per annum.Given the Security Scenario in the country the Industry has only one way to go that is to expand exponentially. Going by these statistics and projections the private Security industry is likely to cross the 1 crore employment mark very soon. Add to this the 14 lakh supervisory staff (as per the Security experts) and the figure seems reachable sooner than expected. In the present day scenario the big question is that is the private security industry doing enough value addition to nation’s development? Before we answer this question let us look at this industry holistically. The Private Security industry In India has many ills to its creditthan the positives that it really deserves. Some of the ills or low points can be enumerated and are well known as given below: 8. This is one of the largest employing unorganized sectors. 9. The most low-esteemed job perceived. 10.Only leftovers, supposedly good for nothing persons join this profession (sometimes unscrupulous elements as well). 11.The cut throat competition among the security companies has made it low income, low talent and low profit business proposition. 12.Due to low wages untrained guards are employed and deployed thus reducing the market value/essence of trained guards.
www.ind-safety.com
13.Despite PSAR Act 2005 the flouting of rules is Omni present in this industry. 14.The availability and induction of untrained guards against the post of trained guards negates the need of a trained guard. 15.The exploitation of the poor guards in many ways has become a norm. 16.There is no ombudsman for the industry. 17.The indifferent attitude of central Govt. and by the state authorities has only added to the woes of the industry. 18.The trained guard has no option but to work at lower wages to compete with untrained guard, who is waiting to replace him. As per Wikipedia the strength of police in all States and Union Territorities in India adds up to 15,85,385 as on January 2015.Thus the private security guards all over the country are approximately 5 times the number of all police personnel in the country. As per Wikipedia the strength of all Central Armed Police forces (earlier known as Para Military Forces) in India stands at 12,93,300. Therefore the total strength of all police forces and CAP Forces put together comes to 28,78,685. The strength of private security therefore is for more than the regular law & order machinery available in the country. Going by the ground situation what value the private Security Industry is adding to the overall security scenario in the country. The answer is anybody’s guess and it is as good as negligible. Can this huge force be utilized in time of any exigency anywhere in the country say natural calamities like floods, earthquake, tsunamis, cyclones, drought, epidemics, landslides or even manmade disasters like fire accidents, building collapses, river breaches, dam breaches, chemical disaster etc.? Well the answer remains a big no.

SECURITY INDUSTRY » Tech Update
Is it not the right time to think on these issues and take the corrective measures? The present Government in the country seems to be moving in the right direction of taking the country on a progressive path. The private security Industry can add value to Prime Minister’s vision of employing youth of the country by opening multiple modern avenues in the fields of security guards, security supervisors, CCTV operators and other related fields of the security sector in a big way. The first step needs to be taken seems to organize this Industry and bring out certain basic minimum norms. Though the authorities seem to have already laid down the norms by way of PSAR Act 2005 but a lot is desired in their implementation and monitoring. This needs to be given a serious thought and achieved within a laid down time span. If this is not done soon the already crumbling private security industry shall only add to its woes and shall not be ableto add value to the nation. In this direction the following few steps seem logical. This shall help in: • Registering all private security companies. • The strict implementation of PSAR Act 2005 in letter & spirit. • Conduct census of the existing security guards provide UID number to each one of them, arrange for their social security benefits, health insurance, old age pension benefit as per their entitlement. • Only trained personnel to be inducted in the industry. Strict penal action against defaulters. • The salary structure should be regulated and the status of security guard elevated to the level it deserves (This shall help attracting the right talent into this profession). • Promotional avenues for security guard should be chalked out for deserving. • The role and horizon of a security guard should be enhanced and he should be trained in fire fighting, disaster management and duties of at
120 | FEBRUARY 2015 | INDUSTRIAL SAFETY REVIEW
least a home guard in an event of a national calamity. • A sense of belonging for them needs to be created in the society. • Exploitation by increased duty hours needs to be curbed. • He should be empowered to a limit so that a common man fears his very presence. • Minimum profitability for security companies ensured to make this industry progress in the right direction and avoid cut throat competition at the cost of quality or working hours etc. The Private security personnel who constitute of one person from among 120 person of the nation’s population can be well utilized as an eye and ear of the security forces with a small training or their sensitization/orientation on national security needs. The Present day security guard plays the role of a mere ’scare crow’ and has only minimum value just by showing his presence. Once it comes to his taking any initiative in any law & order, accident, incident or related issue he plays the role of a mere spectator in most cases. The government/authorities should think of giving the security some legal support to the status/role of a security guard so that he can become a part of the overall security set up. Though this may not happen immediately but sowing a seed in this direction today shall definitely bear fruit soon. Moreover, as it is, the champions of private security industry are already seeking certain changes for improvement of lot of this industry & this change shall serve dual purpose by meeting a demand of industry and help building a safe nation. The Indian private security industry as compared to its peers of advance countries definitely deserves as well as needs drastic steps for improvement and change. The authorities need to take harsh but holistic measures to implement the law of the land related to the private security industry in India. There is no denying that, this step taken shall not only be at right time but also well deserved in the right direction.
The Government is planning the concept of smart cities and the concept appears very easy on papers to implement but to create a smart city needs a lot of preparations. Practically speaking, the foremost need shall be to create educated and responsible population, aware and smart police/security personnel and other sensitive arms of administration. This in itself is a huge task. However, initially, the small steps in this direction to improve the private security industry shall play prominent role in the implementation of smart cities concept and a knowledgeable and well prepared security guard is a necessity in this endeavor. A security guard who is knowledgeable, upright and empowered can definitely add value and follow Prime Minister slogan ‘Neither shallI do anything wrong nor shall I let others do the same. Therefore the security guard and private security Industry in India can play a vital role in the making concept of smart cities a success by way of – • Helping keep environs clean. • Helping in managing general law & order situation by assisting the local law & order machinery by becoming their eyes and ears. • Help authorities in updating about senior residents, women residents & other group prone to pretty crime from anti social elements. • Helping in keeping a tag on anti social elements. • Even helpful to the intelligence services to improve their reach. • Private security industry can prove to be a game changer by becoming the first industry in the country to adopt this methodology in the new political environs. The private security industry in foreign countries not only enjoys a place of pride but also serves as a backup for law and order machinery whereas in our country it is a nonentity. Why can’t we in India make this manpower a force to reckon with? May I add that change in this industry shall prove the vision of Mahatma Gandhi who said ‘Be the change that you wish to see in the world.’ www.ind-safety.com

mobiDEOS Reduces Video Verification Costs for Alarm Dealers UNCE platform leverages existing and new analog cameras and DVRs, lowering cost of entry to $160 for four cameras
m
obiDEOS recently announced a new IP- and cloud-enabled surveillance platform, UCNE, that can leverage existing and new analog infrastructure while cost-efficiently transitioning systems to the network. mobiDEOS is now extending UCNE’s capabilities to deliver a cost- and time-efficient video verification solution for alarm dealers by working with central stations. Alarm verification has been mandated by many law enforcement agencies, and UCNE makes it affordable for all end users—while empowering systems integrators, alarm dealers and central stations to earn additional recurring monthly revenue (RMR) through value-added services.
A business or residence with an analog four-channel DVR can transition to UCNE for as low as $160, with video verification capability included. Similar IP-enabling systems typically cost up
122 | FEBRUARY 2015 | INDUSTRIAL SAFETY REVIEW
to $1500 for the same feature and take much longer to implement. The lower costs enabled through UCNE will also simplify the customer acquisition process for alarm dealers. “Adding video verification to UCNE will help central stations eliminate false alarms, and influence an immediate response from law enforcement agencies based on evidence of an intrusion, crime or other security-related event,” said Sri L. Palasamudram, chief executive officer (CEO), mobiDEOS. “As a result, remote monitoring staff is better empowered to act on behalf of their end customers across businesses, residences and public spaces.” Mr. Palasamudram added that UCNE customers can decrease longterm cost of ownership whether they leverage existing analog infrastructure or add inexpensive new analog cameras to support video verification. As UCNE seamlessly integrates with existing or new analog camera equipment from multiple remote and enterprise sites on the network, this eliminates the need to purchase and install new IP cameras to support video verification. mobiDEOS UCNE previously announced integration with Immix central station software of SureView Systems, and is working with other central station software companies. Integration with mobiDEOS UCNE is simple, requiring only a single line API. www.ind-safety.com
